Hour 3 – NBA’s Small Market Revolution, Big Ben Triggering Players in Pittsburgh
42 min
•Feb 12, 20262 months agoSummary
The Dan Patrick Show's final hour discusses the NBA's small market revolution with Oklahoma City, Detroit, and San Antonio leading without major free agent acquisitions, debates the All-Star Weekend format improvements, and covers controversy around Ben Roethlisberger's podcast comments triggering former Steelers teammates.
Insights
- Small market NBA teams are outperforming big market franchises by building through the draft rather than free agency, challenging conventional wisdom about market size determining success
- Star power matters more than market size in the NBA—LeBron in Cleveland and Steph Curry in Oakland proved individual talent transcends geography
- Load management and rest practices originated with the Spurs' David Robinson in 1997, not recent trends, suggesting the strategy has deep historical roots
- The All-Star Game format struggles because fans want to see competitive basketball, not exhibition layup lines, but also don't want to risk injuries with legends
- Veteran athletes are reluctant to participate in comeback competitions if they can't perform at their former level, making nostalgia-based All-Star formats difficult to execute

I've just been made to fit. The moment you look at the whole picture, the case collapsed. What if the truth was disguised by a story we chose to believe? Oh my God, I think she might be innocent. Listen to Doubt, The Case of Lucy Letby on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This is Special Agent Regal, Special Agent Bradley Hall. It's the final hour on this Thursday. Minister of Humor, Fritzie is here. Seton, Marv, Paulie, yours truly. And the back room, guys, your phone calls coming up. Good morning if you're watching on Peacock or the NBC Sports Network or listening on our radio affiliates around the country. Have a new poll question coming up. And 877-3DP-SHOW, Operator Tyler sitting by. We have the All-Star Weekend coming up, and we've gone back and forth of, can this liven up the All-Star Weekend? I'm at least curious about it. I'm far more curious than I've ever been with an All-Star Game in the last 10 years, maybe 15 years. Now, the expectation level is not very high. It's, all right, is it going to look like basketball? Kind of back and forth that maybe they're competing, not trying to kill each other, but not making it seem like it's a layup line. And that's what it's been before. And maybe that's good enough for you. Maybe you say, hey, we just want to see our guys out there, my favorite player out there, running up and down and shooting some threes or dunking or some fun passes, whatever those moments might be. I'd like to see a little more. I don't blame them if they don't give a little more. You have the three-point shooting contest, which being a shooter, I love watching it. I still think that you could do somebody from the past with somebody with the present. If I say I'm going to put Steve Kerr, and he has one rack, that's it. And then he's going to be with, say, Clay Thompson or Steph Curry. And then I get somebody out. Larry Bird's going to be out there. Reggie Miller. And they get one rack. They only have to shoot one rack. And it will be a tandem. I think that would be fun. Now, if you wanted to incorporate WNBA players in that, and you would have a legend of the game, I think that would be awesome. Now, we do like the, I won the three-point shooting contest. That still holds some value there. But I got Dame Lillard in the three-point shooting contest. He's not even playing. And we made a big deal about Mac McClung. He's not even on an NBA team. But I think Mac is going to show the dunks that he would have, Maybe he's already put out the video. These are the dunks that he would have used if he was in the slam dunk contest. If I would go. Yes. These are the dunks that I would perform. And then Paulie goes, do you know who was in the dunk contest? And I said, I don't know. And he goes, there's only four. We only have four competitors in the dunk contest? Yes. No. It's been four the past couple years. Oh, okay. It wasn't like back in the day with Terrence Stansbury, eight dudes. Terrence Stansbury. I feel good about that one. Yeah. Terrence Stansbury. Was he out of St. Joe's? Oh, checking. Terrence Stansbury. He did win the Slam Dunk Contest. Terrence Stansbury. All right, so there's four competitors in the Slam Dunk Contest. Yes, I'm going to name the competitor. You guys must name the team. Marvin, unfortunately, you're going to have to go last. You have to wait for other answers. Yeah, this is right in your wheelhouse here. Okay, this one is somewhat easy. Jackson Hayes. Who does he currently play for? Big man. He plays for the Lakers. That's correct. Seventh season. Seven-footers rarely do well in dunk contests. That is true. Too close to the rim. Yeah. He should get shorter before the weekend. Okay. Here's somewhat. There's a good hook here. Jace Richardson. So his dad played in the NBA. Yes, Jason Richardson. He was a two-time slam dunk contest winner in 2002. Played at Michigan State. That's correct. J-A-C-E. Yes. All right. J-A-S-E. Oh, S-E. Okay. Close enough. Okay. Jace Richardson plays for? It's actually Jaws. Jaws. It's like a buzz, but Jaws. Jaws Richardson. I'll say Memphis. No, I'll give you a hint. It's a team that you've liked for a couple years now. Doesn't narrow it down a lot. Decent squad. A lot of young talent. Orlando. Orlando's right. Orlando always has a guy in the slam dunk contest. They always have a guy. All right. So Jase. J-A-S-E. Okay. Carter Bryant. Real name. Carter Bryant. He was drafted, I think, in the first round this year. Brooklyn. No, but similar color uniforms. I don't know Brooklyn's colors. Oh. Blue? San Antonio. Carter Bryant is a spur. Whoa! Sort of a gray, black, and white situation there. Okay. He drafted 14th overall. Coming off the bench. Last up, Kashad Johnson. Kashad Johnson. Marvin, do you know Kashad Johnson? Never heard of him. Memphis Grizzlies. Well, close enough. It's an NBA team, you guessed. He's a Miami Heat. He's a Heat. He had a heater. The Miami Heat. Okay. He was with the Sioux Falls Sky Force last year. Okay. So, I hear you, Sioux Falls. Shout out. It's close. You guessed an actual NBA team, so it's close. 6-6 forward. Hey, none of us are in the NBA. No. He split last season between Miami and Sioux Falls, that great surfing tournament. Man. I'd actually rather live in Sioux Falls. Back to you. Than Miami? Yes. I've been to Sioux Falls. It's lovely. I've been to Sioux Falls. I've been in North Dakota and South Dakota. Both Dakotas. Yes. And wanted to date Dakota Johnson. So that's our guy, Kashad Johnson of the Heat and the Sky Force. Your favorite quarterback. Dak Prescott, Dakota. That old poll question, Sioux Falls or Miami, where are you going to live? Well, there's a lot of expanse out of North Dakota and South Dakota. When you drive, there's nobody and there's nothing but fields. That's lovely, though. It can be. Now, we had a beautiful drive with the family because my wife said, we got to go see, as my kids say, the rock structure. I said, yeah, we'll go see the rock structure, Mount Rushmore. The rock structure. The rock structure. And then we got there, and you pull up, and then my kids go, okay. and I go, no, no, no. Your mom is here. We're going in. We're going to go through the gift shop. We're going to do the video. We're here for a while. So unpack. And they sat outside while we went inside. I mean, it was fascinating. And if you get the opportunity, please go see Mount Rushmore. Yes, Todd? If you're driving miles and miles of so-called nothingness, how much are you enjoying the prairies and the views and the cows versus what if my car breaks down and I'm like here for days? Of course you would think that. I didn't think if I break down. There's just no humans anywhere to be seen. Well, there's a lot of farmland. I mean, there is civilization. Call AAA. We'll be there Wednesday. Hang in there. I don't have enough water for the next four days. What are you talking about? Only you. Only you. That's all I would think about. How many in the next rest area? 73 miles? What's going on here? Yeah. Yes, Paul. If Mount Rushmore could ever consider adding an extra head, let's say there's a really great president and they wanted to add a head, and then you show you have a fifth person on Mount Rushmore, that would really help sports radio going forward. If there was a fifth spot on Mount Rushmore. Oh, so when we did the Mount Rushmore of the San Antonio Spurs. Yes, now we have a fifth option. I'm putting that request in on behalf of sports radio producers. Well, this current president may end up trying to find a way to get him up there on the Mount Rushmore. Why not? I mean. Sculpt it out. Yeah. Although it'd be kind of difficult, though, looking at the structure. It does look a little tight in there. There's a wedge in there that you can probably put a 40 by 80 slot. Greatest face the world's ever seen. Yes, Todd. Never been a better face. Starts with the Kennedy Center, and once you can get your name in there, that's the stepping stone. Who knows what you can get to there? Mount Rushmore. For us in sports, a fifth head would help. Yes, I'm fine with that. I'm fine with that. Anywho, 877-3DP-SHOW. So we know our slam dunk contestants, kind of. Kind of. Yeah. Well, we know the names, but we still don't know them. Jordan in Utah. Hi, Jordan. What's on your mind? Hey, good morning, Don Donette. Thanks for taking my call. 62170. um so the conversation on the tanking and the load management earlier the question was asked uh what came first um so i wanted to point out i heard this on a local show that i listened to after you guys in the afternoons spence check it's uh so david robinson his rookie season he He plays 82 games. The next year, 82 games, 68 games, 82, 80, 81, so on and so forth. In 1967, he played six games. That year, there was a senior for Wake Forest by the name of Tim Duncan. The 97 draft, the Spurs get the number one pick and draft Tim Duncan. Yeah, I know. They had David sit out. This is common knowledge. He wasn't tanking. He actually had an injury. He did, but they didn't want him to come back. They encouraged him to make sure that he really took care of his body. The Spurs are like the original load managers. They are. David Stern fined them hundreds of thousands of dollars. And it didn't bother Greg Popovich. He was like, I don't care. Finals. We're winning championships here. Yes, Marvin. And I also learned that David Robinson played in 1967. How about that? If you look at the three teams right now with the best records, you have Oklahoma City, you have the Detroit Pistons, and the San Antonio Spurs. None of them built their teams by landing big free agents. Nobody benefited from an elite player forcing his way into town. It's not a glamorous zip code. Usually when you think of the NBA, we think of big market teams, and they spend deep into the luxury tax, the apron and all of that. Small markets are not supposed to dominate this way. Oklahoma City and Detroit and San Antonio, they're in the bottom 10 in spending in the NBA. They've done it the right way so far. And OKC, Detroit and San Antonio, proof that anyone can compete when built the right way. And congratulations to them. But we tend to look at the NBA. You go, oh, you need L.A., you need Philly, you need New York, you need Boston. And yeah, it helps. The league is better when you have representatives from those cities, certainly with New York. But these are teams on the periphery in these big cities who have built really good teams. And Detroit did that quietly when they drafted Cade Cunningham, and he was going to be the number one pick because somebody had to be And I remember watching him in college and I go okay He could take over some games Seemed like he was pretty good at everything Maybe not great. And I thought, okay, that's a nice complimentary player. And then you realize the makeup of the person. That's what you can't really gauge. He wants to be great. And that's the kind of player. it's when you get to the NBA, now the job begins. And it feels like that way with Cade Cunningham. He got to the NBA. Now I want to be great. Yes, Marvin. But don't you think the NBA is more about stars more so than the markets? Because LeBron James was the biggest star on earth doing it in Cleveland. Same thing with Steph Curry. I know Oakland's not a small market per se, but he was doing it with the Warriors also. So isn't it more so the stars than the market that they're in? Well, the Suns had stars. they didn't have any success. What do you mean? Well, you're talking about big markets, or you're talking about the actual stars? I was only talking about what I was saying was the stars are more important than the market that they're in. Correct? Because LeBron James is the biggest star on earth doing it in Cleveland. Well, Detroit doesn't have stars. But they have good players. Yeah, but they don't have big names. I mean, San Antonio has Wemby. I'm not sure what we're discussing or arguing here. But I think you were saying the NBA is better when it has big markets. Yeah. But I think the star power is more important than the market. Yeah, but those teams, Jalen Brunson's an elite player. Jason Tatum, Jalen Brown, elite players. L.A. has Luka and LeBron. So you do have big names in big cities. Joe Ellenby was an MVP in Philadelphia. Now, do we maybe enhance somebody's credentials or notoriety because they were in a bigger city? Yes. I mean, Jalen Brunson played in Detroit, or Dallas, and people don't even remember. They're like, he was with Luka? And you're like, yes. So that'd be the same thing with Cade Cunningham. Cade Cunningham would be a bigger star if he was somewhere else. he's a top five player in the NBA this season. Yeah, okay. He doesn't have star power. He's a really good player. Well, neither does Jalen Brunson, but he only plays in New York. Yeah. You see what I'm saying? Are we arguing? No, we shouldn't argue. Okay. Are we beefing? No. Rich had enough beef for both of us. Oh, Rich in Chicago? Yes. Okay. All righty. Let me take a break here. More phone calls coming up. Back after this. Be sure to catch the live edition of the Dan Patrick Show weekdays at 9 a.m. Eastern, 6 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app. Stugatz here. I have a podcast empire. The nurse who should have been in charge of caring for tiny babies is now the most prolific child killer in modern British history. Everyone thought they knew how it ended. A verdict, a villain, a nurse named Lucy Letby. Lucy Letby has been found guilty. But what if we didn't get the whole story? The moment you look at the whole picture, the case collapses. I'm Amanda Knox and in the new podcast Doubt the case of Lucy Letby we follow the evidence and hear from the people that lived it to ask what really happened when the world decided who Lucy Letby was. No voicing of any skepticism or doubt It'll cause so much harm at every single level of the British establishment of this is wrong Listen to Doubt the case of Lucy Letby on the iHeartRadio app Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Nancy Glass, host of the Burden of Guilt Season 2 podcast. This is a story about a horrendous lie that destroyed two families. Late one night, Bobby Gumpright became the victim of a random crime. He pulls the gun, tells me to lie down on the ground. He identified Jermaine Hudson as the perpetrator. Jermaine was sentenced to 99 years. I'm like, Lord, this can't be real. I thought it was a mistaken identity. The best lie is partial truth. For 22 years, only two people knew the truth. Until a confession changed everything. I was a monster. Listen to Burden of Guilt Season 2 on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What if mind control is real? If you could control the behavior of anybody around you, what kind of life would you have? Can you hypnotically persuade someone to buy a car? When you look at your car, you're going to become overwhelmed with such good feelings. Can you hypnotize someone into sleeping with you? I gave her some suggestions to be sexually aroused. Can you get someone to join your cult? NLP was used on me to access my subconscious. NLP, aka Neuro Linguistic Programming, is a blend of hypnosis, linguistics, and psychology. Fans say it's like finally getting a user manual for your brain. It's about engineering consciousness. Mind Games is the story of NLP. It's crazy cast of disciples and the fake doctor who invented it at a New Age commune and sold it to guys in suits. He stood trial for murder and got acquitted. The biggest mind game of all? NLP might actually work. This is wild. Listen to Mind Games on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. China's Ministry of State Security is one of the most mysterious and powerful spy agencies in the world. But in 2017, the FBI got inside. This is Special Agent Regal, Special Agent Bradley Hall. This MSS officer has no idea the U.S. government is on to him. But the FBI has his chats, texts, emails, even his personal diary. Hear how they got it on the Sixth Bureau podcast. I now have several terabytes of an MSS officer, no doubt, no question, of his life. And that's a unicorn. No one had ever seen anything like that. It was unbelievable. This is a story of the inner workings of the MSS and how one man's ambition and mistakes opened its vault of secrets. Listen to The Sixth Bureau on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On June 11th, 1998, a deputy from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department went missing. It's an all-out manhunt for John Oje. Every search and rescue team in L.A. County has been called in to help. Within days, tips started flooding into the sheriff's department. The rumor around the drug scene was that a deputy was taken care of. Is this the story of a man who just got lost in the desert? Or of a cover-up inside the nation's largest sheriff's department? A homicide captain saying, Detective, do not find out if this guy's guilty or innocent. Who does that? Valley of Shadows, a new series from Pushkin Industries about crime and corruption in California's high desert. Do you have any advice for us while looking into this disappearance? I wouldn't do it alone. Listen to Valley of Shadows on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Well, it looks like the Utah Jazz will be without the reigning defensive player of the year, Jaron Jackson Jr. III. Looks like he's going to be out the rest of the season. He is going to need surgery. That'll help Utah with ping pong balls. Not that that was the goal, but that certainly helped out with their tanking abilities here. Let me see. What else do I have here? Oh, by the way, the D-Addle t-shirt is up on the website. I forget who came up with D-Addle. It's a Paul Peps situation. Was that you, Paul? We put the D in Seattle. Okay, D-addle. So that T-shirt is up there. Because their defense was really good. It's a reference to their defense in the Super Bowl. Yeah. Complex bit. D-addle. Workshopping it. Joey Porter Sr., former Steeler linebacker, he was on the Not Just Football podcast, and he said this about his former quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger. seven definitely broke the brotherhood because like that's the one i don't understand seven do that did that we don't talk about i know is crazy like like out of anybody should talk he should never grab a microphone and really talk still a business yeah because if we talk and still a business his ass is foul of all foul like that he's did is foul of all foul he's not a good teammate won the Super Bowl with him, but the person, he's just not a good teammate. Like, he knows that. Anybody in the Steeler building knows that. But we protected him because I've only won one Super Bowl, and that was my quarterback. So do I love my quarterback? Yeah, but is he a good person? No? I don't know where this came from. Foul of all fouls. Yeah. I mean, I'm not surprised at this, but I'm just surprised at the timing of this. I don't know, did Ben have something negative to say about Aaron Rodgers or Mike McCarthy? Yeah, Paulie. Ben has been on a podcast that I think he runs with some people over the course of this year and he said some things analyzing from outside that I guess some Steelers are upset with. Not one specific incident. Yeah, but I don't have any problem with him from his perch, his perspective, his career, if he has something to say. like he hasn't earned the right to be able to say that just because he wasn't a good teammate? I mean, he was there for 18 years. I got the sense that what Joey Porter was saying, and maybe I'm just reading too much into it, is for years we protected you, and now you're supposed to do the same thing for the Steelers. For years you were a bad teammate, but we all protected you. Nobody talked about our dirty laundry outside of that locker room, but you're more than welcome or you're more than willing to discuss things on your podcast. And nobody did that to you when you were in the building. But is this about him as a teammate or him as a person? Because as a former player, I want his perspective on the Steelers, whether I agree with it or not. I welcome it. And he's earned the right to have a podcast where he can, you know, share that content. but this feels like it's more about the person that Joey Porter Sr. doesn't like. Well, it might be the teammate. Maybe they blur the lines there together. Maybe the teammate wouldn't be saying it, but the person is, I guess. I don't know. Yes, Todd. And what are you trying to accomplish this many years later anyway? And I don't know, why is that an important thing to make sure the world knows how you feel about how bad a guy Big Ben was? Well, if I'm interviewing Joey Porter Sr., I would say, well, give me specifics here. I mean, if you're already going to call him out being a bad person, now there might be things that he doesn't want to say publicly, but I was just kind of surprised where, you know, it was like, oh, did you hear what Joey Porter Sr. said about Ben? Like, no. And then I heard it, and I go, wow, okay. It's a long time after the fact. Yes, Marv. And this type of dirty laundry is for other franchises, not the Steelers. Oh, that's all I have. All right, fair point, fair point. The NBA's biggest stars, the All-Star Weekend on NBC and Peacock, USA versus the world. Chris in L.A. Hi, Chris. Good morning, Dan. You know, you were talking about LeBron's feature in L.A., and I just wanted to give you a vibe as to what people here in L.A. feel. You know, with the Guggenheim group that owns the Dodgers now owning the Lakers, the feeling here is that they're going to make some major shakeups, including maybe Rob Palenka being gone and that would include LeBron being gone as well and that they not as beholden to clutch sports and LeBron as the Buss family was And it kind of makes you wonder. And Andrew Friedman, the president of the Dodgers, has already started meetings with Laker personnel. So we think there's going to be some shakeups, and most Laker fans are okay with that. And it also makes you wonder if they're picking Magic's brain, who, you know, you have a co-owner who is one of the best players of all time. They're probably getting his opinion on this as well. So we'll see. But I think there's going to be some differences here with the Lakers roster next season. Yeah, I saw with Rob Polinka is his job in question here. LeBron's future there. and you know now it's Luka's team so what do you want to surround him with and LeBron can still play at a pretty high level you still want him around this isn't one of those where you say like Kobe hey we're not going to be very good come out and watch Kobe play the last couple of years that's not this scenario like we have Austin Reeves and we have Luka we should be better and they're not going to be. I mean, they might be a dangerous first-round opponent, but they just don't play any defense. They have no interest in playing defense. And they have a couple of big guys that are supposed to be those rim protectors here. All I know is Luka might play a little bit of defense. LeBron can look like he's playing defense, but, man, you watch sometimes and you're like, This isn't a good team. Yeah, Marv. LeBron plays defense like you do. Like when you make a basket, come on, who's got it? Oh, come on, come on. Slap the floor. It's the illusion of I'm about to get down in a chair and play some defense. Nobody is more excited about playing defense than the guy who just scored. You never see the guy who misses the shot, who is like slapping the floor and can't, you know, he's ready to play defense. I played some of my best defense, well, my only defense, after I made a shot. So, therefore, I probably played some decent defense. A little clapping. Yeah. Come on now. Pick him up. You got him. You got him. I got him. Watch the switch. Pick, pick. You know, if I miss the shot, I wouldn't say a word. I'd be like, damn, how did I miss that shot? Who's getting that rebound? Come on, guys. Get a rebound and get it back out. Who's getting that rebound? Rebound, rebound, get it, get it. I remember some of the cheers were so silly when you're in high school. but you're watching those cheerleaders. It didn't matter what's in it. Stick or swim. Do or die. Come on, Eagles. Break that tie. R-E-B-O-U-N-D. Rebound. Rebound. Okay. U-G-L-Y. You ain't got no alibi. You ugly. Yeah, you ugly. We got spirit. Yes, we do. We got spirit. How about you? We could be male cheerleaders. We would be yell leaders. What do you mean could be, Paul? Yeah. A lot of experience. What was the cheer that I told you about? Bleep. Bleep, bleep. Oh, yeah. It was bleep. Boom. Get off your ass and jam. I remember we came and we were playing this all-black school, and we came out of the locker room, and they started with that cheer, and I'm like, we're in trouble. We're in trouble. I don't know how good they are. They turned out to be really good, but we're in trouble. when the cheerleaders are kind of like, bloop, bloop, bloop. The principal's leading the charge. Yeah, get off your ass and jam, boom, boom. I'm like, whew. Good cheer, though. Don in Oregon. Hi, Don. What's on your mind today? Hey, good morning, Dan. Danette, first time, long time. I have an idea for salvaging the All-Star Weekend, and that is to make it a generational tournament where you set it up like the old school at the park, half-court games. You've got teams that can play four-on-four, have six guys so you've got a couple subs that'll accommodate the older fellas playing for bragging rights. Add a little to that goat debate. Don, it's a torn Achilles waiting to happen and we can't have that. I don't want to see old men out there but I would have them out there for the three-point shooting contest. You get one rack of balls, you have to shoot five of them and that would be enough for the older guys that they wouldn't get winded. It's stationary. If you can put some of these great shooters from the past out there, I think it would be fun. Yes, Heaton? I think you guys are all underestimating the reluctance of a formerly great athlete's willingness to go out on a field or a court and show what he can't do anymore. I know. I want to protect him from him. Right, but even shooting, I don't even know. You could get a great shooter out there. If they're not able to do it the way that we remember them doing it, they don't want to do that to themselves. Reggie Miller would go out there. I don't know if he would. You could put Reggie out there. You could put Ray Allen out there. Steve Kerr out there. Craig Hodges out there. Ray Allen a little closer to his former glory than those other guys. I don't know that any of those dudes want to go out there and be like, I guess I can't really shoot anymore. That stinks. Anyway. Reggie Miller would go out there. Absolutely. Absolutely. I don't know. Absolutely. Reg would go out there, and Reg would probably make all five of them. And not shooting against another retired guy, shooting against an active guy. Well, no, you're part of a team. Okay, so you're all part of a team. Yeah, so you pick wherever you want to be on the court, whatever rack you want. Some guys are really good top of the key. Some guys are good from the side. Reggie wouldn't be top of the key. He'd be to the side. Now, I'm not saying Larry Bird's going to want to go out there, but I think you could get some of these guys who were great shooters. and it never leaves you. Shooting does not leave you. It doesn't. Yes, Paulie? I agree with Seton. They don't want to be embarrassed, but older athletes also like to remind people once in a while, hey, I still have it. Like Reggie when we were in San Antonio, I think it was, he's like, let's go. I'll bet you Tim Legler's in. Oh, yeah, Legs would do it. He's in. Yes, yes. How about Jeff Hornacek? In. Now, he wasn't a three-point shooter. He won it twice. I got him winning it in 98 and 2000. But he wasn't a three-point shooter, though. I think his numbers don't bear that out that he was a three-point shooter. He saved it for All-Star. Mid-range jumper contest? Yes. Oh, man, mid-range jumper. Mid-range jumper contest? Horny. What a great nickname. Horny. Yes. Yes, Marvin. DP, I'm sorry, but we can't do this because I was at this All-Star game in 2019 in Charlotte. They had legends do the three-point shootout, and it did not go well in Charlotte. No, no, you only get one rack. They all got it. So the four guys made six of 25 shots. Del Curry went two of 10. Mark Price, one of five. Glenn Rice, three of five. How about we edit around it? Like we'll edit that. We won't do it live. But we'll... Oh, come on. Produce it up a little bit. Yeah, okay. Man, those guys didn't miss. He went two for two, but there's five balls there. Eric in Tucson. Good morning, Eric. What's on your mind? Good morning, Dan. Hey, thank you for taking my call again. Just a couple thoughts. One, on the All-Star game, All-Star games in general. I'm an old guy, I'm 61, but I think we just got to give up the dose on these. The purpose they had back in the day was we as fans got to see players we wouldn't have a chance to see any other time. and those days are gone and now we're just trying to find filler and it's just not working the only option i have for the nba is that possibly the mid-season tournament championship game takes place over this window um outside of that uh let it go and then the other comment is on um the uh load management and i'm going to honestly admit that it's a little bit off memory so i'm not quite sure of my timeline here, but one guy I think gets a bit of a pass on this is LeBron, because I distinctly remember, I think it was his first run through Cleveland, he took a week mid-season and went to Miami and worked out with Dwayne Wade. I don't know if it was the same period as the banana boat incident, but that was the first time I remember an all-star player taking a break for a longer period of time, more so than just San Antonio saying one players out for one game. Yeah, but LeBron has played more games than anybody and took care of himself better than anybody. And the fact that he's been doing it for 21 years, if he did... Now, I don't remember him taking time out during the season where he's going to go work out with Dwayne Wade. It feels like a conflict of interest there. But, I mean, maybe he did. But that guy played games. It was a couple of years ago, he wanted to play an all-80 games. I mean, he took it personally. He wanted to show the younger players that he could play all of these games. Yes, Paulie? In LeBron's first seven seasons, all in Cleveland, he never played fewer than 75 games. And I can't find anything that says he left his team midseason to go play pickup with Dwayne Wade, a competitor. I mean, this isn't like Rodman going to Vegas. Yeah. I mean, it's a little bit different. But, you know, LeBron played. Now, this year, once he missed like 16 or 17 games already, and he can't qualify for the All-NBA. I don't think he's a first, second, I mean, he's not a second or third team guy anyway. And maybe realizing that, maybe, you know, trying to rest himself a little bit to get ready for the second half. Yeah, Paulie? The past two years, LeBron has played 71 games in 70 games, 35 minutes per game. He's on pace this year to play 70 games. So he is not a 62-game guy. 70 is pretty respectable when you're 40. Well, he won't be able to play 70. He's already missed 16. Yeah, so his pace is lower. Yeah. Now, he won't even come close to that. The past two years, 71 and 70. Tony in California. Hi, Tony. What's on your mind? Hey, guys. Good morning. So, wait. Did Mannix just say the Clippers are no good? That guy needs to stop running his mouth and stay in his lane, man. Kawhi just went up to Minnesota and made Ant look like a rookie. Dropped 41 on him in three quarters and sat out the fourth quarter. I mean, they are two games under .500. But Haas team, 20-7 since going 6-21. And we got better at the trade deadline, too, I believe. Yeah, but so much so, James Harden wanted out of Los Angeles because he didn't think you were a contender. It's not fair, Dan. We got Matherin. Matherin's a good player, and he's from Haiti. So we got that going for us. Well, congratulations. Thank you, Tony. Yeah, I mean, the Clippers story is kind of crazy. And then I wonder if Kawhi's there next year. By the way, where do we stand with the fake job and the money that he got and Pablo Torre and is the NBA investigating? Yes, Marvin. This is a perfect weekend to bring that up, too. It would be. Commissioner, commissioner, commissioner. Can we talk about the Clippers situation here with the jobs? Can we go back to tanking questions, please? No, Commissioner, we want to ask you about this. Yeah, I wonder if Kawhi's there next year. Yes, Marvin. Ask him about traveling, carrying. There should be no good questions for the Commissioner. Fritzie just found something. Windhorse wrote a column in the beginning of March of 2016 about the LeBron spending time in Miami, and he did work out with Dwayne Wade. But Cavaliers' plays were given Tuesday and Wednesday off by Coach Lou after they'd played three games in the previous four days. James flew to Miami on Tuesday with his family, spent some time in the warm weather. The Cavs were aware of the trip, had no issue with him going. But he didn't miss games, right? Yeah, they were given Tuesday and Wednesday off, so I'm assuming that there's no games that were missed. Yeah, so these are off days. Yeah, they had a few days break since they played a number of games. Yeah, boy. What do you mean? Come on. But he didn't miss any games. And he did take his family with him. I like how they add that to the art. He had his family. That officially makes it a vacation. Yes, it is. If your family goes, oh, this is real. We've somehow gotten to the end of the show. We're going to come back. Last call for phone calls. What we learned. What's in store tomorrow. I think the Giants' new head coach, John Harbaugh, is joining us tomorrow. Sure is. Okay. Who has it better than we do? No. Okay. Are the Giants going to be one of those teams that makes the leap that they go up? I wonder what Vegas has, the best odds for the teams that didn't make the playoffs to make the playoffs next year. I'll bet the Giants pretty high up on that list. All right. We'll come back. What we learn, what's in store tomorrow, right after this. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of our shows at foxsportsradio.com. This is a story about a horrendous lie that destroyed two families. Late one night, Bobby Gumpwright became the victim of a random crime. The Giants' new head coach, John Harbaugh, will join us. Paul in Boise joins us now. Good morning, Paul. What's on your mind? Hey, DP. First time, long time. Thanks for taking my call this morning. I had an idea for All-Star Weekend that I've had for a long time, and I think it would be great, for the dunk contest. I think they should do a game of horse or call it dunk, D-U-N-K, or something like that. And you could kind of see then who could come up with a creative dunk and if the other guys could replicate it. because then you wouldn't have to sit through missed dunks and a time frame and, you know, subjective scoring, whatever that might be. Well, they have a certain amount of time they have to fill. They don't mind if there's missed dunks. I think that if you miss a dunk, then that score should count against you. But, you know, you get a couple of tries here. I don't tune in to the dunk contest. Mack McClung, I remember seeing him in high school and realized just how great a leaper he was. I don't think he displayed that in college when he was at Georgetown and I think Texas Tech. But watching him in the G League, then you had an idea of, wow, something a little different. Got a white guy, he's small, and he's the best dunker in the house. But then it was, well, he's not on an NBA team. And then I think Orlando picked him up or something for a couple of games. Hey, he's on an NBA team. Put him in the slam dunk contest. Okay, we're done with the contest. Send him back to the G League. He dominates the G League. And he puts up 30 a night in the G League. But there is such a – it's incredible when you watch even G League or you're watching these AAU or you're watching, you know, pick up all-star games, the incredible talent that you see. Yes, Marvin. And it's incredible because you see his game. He's putting up 40 at night. Why can't he do that? Because they already have a guy that can do that on the NBA. They need you to stand in the corner and hit open threes. And if you can't do that, you can't stay in the lead. Thanks for the phone call, Paul. Mark in Albany. Hi, Mark. What's on your mind? Hey, Dan. First time, long time. 511, 185 on my wedding day. Just wanted to follow up. You guys are talking about the Pablo Torre and Kawhi thing. I know we don't have the best relationship with Metaluck Media and the Lubbock Tartt Show after the last year's Super Bowl. Thanks a lot, Todd. But he had dropped the bomb yesterday at 5 a.m. as a voicemail from Jerry West calling the Lakers a bleep show and saying that Kawhi would pretty much be in LeBron's coattail and more or less even though he'd be the best player on the team, he wouldn't even be from. So just curious to see if anything does come up this weekend at the All-Star Game, if anything comes up. We know Kawhi won't answer any questions, and who knows if we can play. Yeah, I haven't followed that. I'm still looking for answers with Kawhi and his summer job that he got paid for. And is the NBA going to do anything? Are they going to take away draft picks or find the Clippers or both? but the Clippers are hosting the All-Star game. The other part of Pablo and a Jerry West comment recording, I don't know anything about that. And what was the problem with Meadowlark, the Dan Levitard show last year at the Super Bowl? I wasn't sure what he was referring to. Yeah. We have a great relationship with Dan Levitard. I don't know if we had a falling out and I'm unaware of. Yes, Paul? Someone just sent a note. did Todd get the name of Metal Lark wrong or something wrong with Dan Levitard, they said? I just got a note from someone. I don't recall it exactly. But it was a big deal. Apparently. Did you have the wrong title for somebody? That I vaguely remember. We called it something, or I put it on the sheet wrong, but I don't think it became some kind of class action lawsuit. I don't remember it being like everybody was all of a sudden upset with each other. Well, no, I had to put out the fire. And I had to make sure that it didn't become a class action lawsuit. Yes, Paul. Yeah, the I-team just tracked this down. Thank you, I-team. And back, Fritzie, on the one sheet for Dan Levitard, put Meadowlard Media. Oh, that's a little hard. Instead of Meadowlard. Meadowlard Media. Which could have turned into a class action lawsuit, got to admit. And if you've seen Levitard, I mean, you could say... Hey-ho! That would be nice! Not necessary. Why would you do that? That is not necessary. Man. Sometimes I don't know if this thing is on. He's a healthy guy. What was love like? Oh, my God. I was talking to Levitar yesterday. Plus, you've got to gear up when he calls. You're in for the long haul. Because my wife saw my phone ring, and she goes, okay, 30 minutes, then we're going to have dinner. She kept you? No, she knew that it was going to be at least 30 minutes. Yes, Todd? That was not intentional, but looking at my keyboard, There are four letters between the D and the K, so I don't know why I put that. It's not like I hit the letter one to the left or one to the right. There's F, G, H, and J between the D and the K. Dan Levitard, Meadowlard. It seems like I was trying to be cute because the letters are nowhere near each other on the keyboard, but I can assure you I wouldn't put Meadowlard. That's unprofessional. And it would embarrass you to say that by accident. Meadowlard, you know, I was looking. Yeah, but I did say it. You did. So I kind of screwed you over and the whole media company. And Dan Levitard. Yeah. I'm embarrassed everybody. Yeah, you trashed Dan Levitard. All I can do is apologize. Final results of the poll question. Satan? Meadow lard. Meadow lard. I forgot all about that. That's so good. Let's see. We have a couple of poll questions up there right now. Which would you rather from your player? Would you rather 60 games for 15 years or 82 games for 11 years? That's 82 for 11, currently winning with about 71% of that vote. And if you were the Texans, would you extend C.J. Stroud right now? 75% of the audience say no. No, they wouldn't. They would not extend him right now. Trying to stay in my lane. Certain things. I just have to stay in my lane. How dare you criticize, critique C.J. Stroud and the Texans. Let's go around the room, see if we learned anything on the program. Todd, did you learn anything? I did. Kevin Durant says, don't worry about USA players playing hard in the All-Star game. Ask Luca and Joker who don't give a full effort. Seton, what did you learn today? Based on callers, the state of Illinois wants you to stay in your lane. Chicago and Illinois, those have been the main stay-in-your-lane callers. Coming after me in the Midwest. What the heck, Chicago? Marvin, what did you learn today? That the Bears will be in Super Bowl 61. If I look at the last 20 years, you lose, and then you come back, and then you play in the Super Bowl. Just saying, Paul. What did you learn today? This Stroud story on this show has legs. Have a great day, everybody. We'll talk to you on our Meat Friday. I'm Nancy Glass, host of the Burden of Guilt Season 2 podcast.
