Miller and Moulton discuss Olympic hockey's positive reception, the White House's upcoming college sports roundtable with Tebow and Saban, and major developments across NFL, NBA, college basketball, and golf. The hosts emphasize the disconnect between media outrage and public sentiment on various issues.

Insights
  • Hockey fans are embracing Olympic athletes with respect while broader media coverage focuses on political controversy, suggesting a gap between media narratives and actual fan sentiment
  • The White House college sports roundtable excludes current head coaches, which hosts view as a strategic mistake given their direct knowledge of pay-for-play issues
  • Anthony Richardson's trade availability signals teams view him as a cheap backup option rather than a franchise quarterback solution
  • Miami Dolphins rank first in player satisfaction for third consecutive year, indicating strong organizational culture under current leadership
  • Olympic athletes returning to regular season play are performing well immediately, raising questions about load management in hockey unlike basketball

you're listening to Miller and Moulton coming at you from the floor Meister studios floor Meisters keeping it real and now here's Mark Miller and David Moulton top of the morning to you on this final Friday of February got a nice show lined up for you hope your week has gone well how the heck are you miller and molten miller and molten.com miller underscore molten on x so you settling in mark your new digs oh yeah oh yeah you know what i feel like this is david without the kitchen i feel like i'm in a new york apartment i've got about 500 square feet i mean this would be, you know, $3,000 a month in Manhattan, but you know what I'm saying? There's, there's not a lot of room, but it's got everything you need. Got a bedroom, got a bathroom, got a little living room TVs of decent size. So I can watch what I need to watch. I'm good. All right. I'm good. Community kitchen. I can't cook. So my wife has me watching over her shoulder while she cooks, which she's really going to enjoy for the next couple of months. big showdown on the show last night. Mark, proud alum of Michigan State. Raj, a Purdue Boilermaker, went down to the end at Mackey. And Sparty, big road win in Purdue, losing another home game to a ranked team. All right, but a good game. Nonetheless, College Hoops has delivered this year. Yep, very good game. Went down to the end. I watched two minutes and 40 seconds of it, David, because I've got the hockey bug. I was watching hockey last night. With only one television, I had to make a choice. I was watching Wings and Senators last night. Ooh, look at you. Look at you. That Larkin guy picked up right where he left off after the Olympic break with a couple of goals last night. that Kachuk guy for Ottawa picking up right where he left off. He had the goal. So good hockey last night. Eastern Conference final preview between Tampa and Carolina, and Carolina wins on the road. Up 3-0. Lightning come back, tie it. 4-3, 4-4. Carolina wins 5-4. And regulation, which was big for Carolina. Sure, because now they're just two points back of the Lightning for the overall top seed in the East. And it sure is looking. I mean, teams have over a quarter of the season left, but it sure is looking right now. Like, those are clearly the two best teams in the East. Yep. No doubt. Get ready for mid to late May, six or seven games from those two. No doubt. Florida with a nice win last night. They did. You know, now they've caught Toronto. So they're eight back, but now they're equal with one more team. You talk about it all the time, whatever the sport is. It's not just trying to get into the playoffs when you're back. It's how many teams you have to pass to do so. And last night, Florida equaled Toronto. They have far more regulation wins. So that was a good win for the Panthers. As Toronto goes 0-4 in Florida, which a lot of teams do, losing to both Tampa and the Panthers. and I think we're pretty close to sticking a fork in the Maple Leafs. Even though they're right there with the Panthers, they don't seem to be as good. Got outscored 9-3 in the Florida swing and picking up two L's. Well, Olympic fever is still very prevalent throughout the NHL. Mark, something happened last night in Pittsburgh that those who are from Pittsburgh and have watched Pittsburgh sports for a long time said, yeah, this hasn't happened very often. Somebody on the visiting team getting a standing ovation. Because it was Devils at Penguins, and the Devils made sure to put Mr. Hughes out there to start. And the Penguins announced the starters and saved Hughes for last. and when they announced Jack Hughes, that place rose as one with chants of USA, USA. Well, at least the hockey fan gets it. The rest of America I'm not so sure of right now, and quite frankly, I'm disappointed in. I think this whole outrage towards the Olympic team is one of the biggest jokes that I've seen since I've been doing this for a living. I guess, and I probably shouldn't go here, but I can't help it, David, because it's pissing me off. Since when does your love of country be determined by who the president is? If you don't like the president, you can still love the United States of America. You can still not like what's going on in certain aspects of our country, but still love the place you live. And for whatever reason, that's lost now. And it disgusts me. I get it. There are a lot of reasons not to like the guy in the White House if you don't like him. I understand it. My head is not in the sand. However, how you're taking that out on a bunch of 22 to 25-year-old men who played great hockey and went and had some cheeseburgers with them is ridiculous to me. I don't get it, and it really bothers me, but I love the fact that the hockey fan is treating these guys with the utmost respect, whether it's Hughes, whether it's Getzel, whether it's Kachuk, whether it's Larkin, whether it's Hellebrook, they're all being treated like kings, and they should be. The hockey fan gets it. They respect them. Not going to go political because, you know, I don't want to on this show. But, Mark, there are times in which the Beltway has always gotten enamored with a subject, and the rest of America looks at the Beltway like, you guys are completely out of touch. We don't give a damn about that. why are you guys spending so much time on this? Why are you getting all worked up on this? I actually don't think that there's the outrage that there seems to be because I think the media is stoking it. And sometimes, as we know, the media stokes something because they're lazy and they got nothing else to talk about because that would take real work. And this is very easy, low-hanging fruit, okay? And if they're already biased against the guy in the White House, then great. It's even more reason to do it. So it's been heartwarming. It really has a beautiful scene, I thought, last night in Fort Lauderdale. All right. Absolutely beautiful scene. It's Toronto and it's Florida. And Austin Matthews is the captain of the Leafs. He also was the captain of Team USA. And so they did a ceremonial face-off, and they brought Austin Matthews out, and they brought Matthew Kachuk out, okay, who obviously was also on Team USA. In fact, I think he was an alternate captain. He was. He wore a letter. You're darn right he did. So two of the three guys wearing letters were out for the ceremonial face-off. Kachuk put his arm around Matthews. They skated out to center ice together, okay, little bro hug after the ceremonial dropping of the puck. Kuchuk takes the American flag, starts skating around with it, but had the ceremonial puck in his hand and skates all the way to the corner. And I don't know if every hockey team does this, but they do it in both Tampa and Florida. Right. Where they bring out a member of the military, usually somebody who is old. and it turns out last night that the gentleman who was standing on the ice in the lower left corner, if you were watching on TV, was 101 years old. So guess what he served in? And Matthew Kachuk skated over to him and handed him the puck and stood next to him with the flag and just stood there. Like, I'm proud to be next to this guy. And as you can tell by my voice cracking, I thought it was beautiful. Absolutely. No doubt. Absolutely. Well said. And, you know, the hockey fans are getting it. There are a lot in the media that are not. And you may be right that it's low-hanging fruit, but I'm seeing so much of it. And maybe it's my fault for spending a little bit too much time on social media. But it is is gotten me angry at the point that we, you know, David, you and I have talked about it. You and I have had political discussions for years off air. It's actually one of the things that I probably miss most since we've gone to Twitch and YouTube. And you all able to see our commercial breaks because for years David and I for six minutes would have some incredibly heated political discussions Yes And then the light would come on and we go back to talking about the dolphins I was going to say, well, let's get back to the buck salary cap. They're really in a bind, Mark. So, you know, it's just it's it's funny. It's one of the little little things. While I love the fact that you guys are all able to now see and communicate with us during the commercial breaks. It's the one thing I miss during our commercial breaks that David and I, over the years, had a lot of very deep conversations. And I always thought it was fun because every once in a while it would be heated and we'd go right back to the air and go, so tonight the Dolphins take it. I mean, whatever it was. And we moved right on because we've always had the ability that when we agree to disagree, it doesn't change the way we feel about one another. But the hockey world has been great. And, you know, you bring up Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh watched. Buffalo watched. Fort Myers, Florida watched. Detroit, Minneapolis. But I think Minneapolis was third. Pittsburgh won. Buffalo two. Minneapolis third. I'm missing one in Detroit. And Fort Myers tied for fifth. In terms of Olympic ratings. Yep. For the hockey game on Sunday. So it was, the numbers were tremendous throughout most of the, you know, the eastern part, the northeastern part of the country, or the hockey to be expected, the same markets you would always expect. But there was a few in Ohio that I was surprised. Like Cincinnati was a really strong market. Both Fort Myers and West Palm in Florida made the top ten. But now I am interested, David, because, you know, like last night, Larkin scored twice for the Red Wings. You know, Kachuk had a goal. How will the Olympic players, coming off the hot, you figure they're going to be good for a week, how are their legs going to be for a lot of these teams going through the remainder of the season? Matt Goldie, who scored the first goal, the regulation goal, and the U.S.'s gold medal win. Two goals, two helpers last night, and a win at Colorado. Brad Marchant, right? Brad Marchant with two goals last night. Yes, he played for Team Canada, but still, Mark, bringing up the point, Hey, how are the guys faring who just spent two weeks across the pond and had a pretty quick turnaround? Believe it or not, so far, so good. Back at it. Can they keep at it? Not only through the rest of the regular season, but then when the real season begins and the physicality gets there, it's probably the thing I'm most interested in the NHL. Well, that trade deadline that comes up next week because, well, my team needs a defenseman. But hockey, we'll see if the ratings, you know, I don't think it will do much to help the ratings, the Olympic thing. But the hockey fan, the guy that was already in, is all in right now. What's funny is a topic that is associated with basketball has actually been brought up in hockey circles. For those that played in the Olympics, are you going to have to do some kind of load management for them between now and the end of the regular season because they've been playing every other day for four months, and now they're going to continue to play every other day for two more. And are you going to have to rest these guys for the playoffs? That's not hockey. You're listening to Miller & Moulton. And now, here's Mark Miller and David Moulton. 21 minutes past the hour. Thanks for joining us. Miller & Moulton, millermoulton.com, Miller underscore Molten on X. Bill Bender is going to join us in a little over two hours to talk some college football. And first off, there's never a bad time to talk college football, but there's some big topics that are out there. Big picture, big topic stuff that we want to get to. One of them is right now. We got to the other one yesterday. And we'll get to it again in a little bit. But did you see the news, Mark, that came out late yesterday from the White House? that Tebow and Saban are coming to be on some committee with the president? Yes, I did. A week from today in D.C., 35 men and women have been invited to be part of a roundtable, I think is what they're calling it. Probably because at the White House, they have rooms big enough to have a 35-person roundtable. I mean, for most of us, we'd have to come up with a different name, move it to an auditorium or something. But anyway, it's an interesting group. I mean, high profile. First off, Tiger Woods is on it. Well, when I think college football, I certainly think Tiger Woods. Bryson DeChambeau is going to be there. So I'm curious as to why. I mean, you know, besides the fact that the president's friendly with both. And as we've talked about, if the president of the United States calls you up and says, Hey, would you like to? You go, yeah. As a matter of fact, yes. So, by the way, you asked the question earlier in the week, Tiger is Ryder Cup captain. He's not only reshaping the PGA Tour, apparently he's going to help reshape college sports. Right, but Governor DeSantis is on the committee. The president of the Yankees is on the committee. Adam Silver is on the committee. Charlie Ward's on the committee. Well, okay, my understanding is there's a group of three. It's the president, it's DeSantis, and it's the Yankees president, Randy Levine. They're kind of like the captain in the two A's. But, yes, everybody you mentioned is going to be there. Saban, Mack Brown, Urban Meyer are the former coaches. No current head coaches have been invited. Do you think that's a mistake? Or do you think it would be a conflict for any current head coach to go? I think it's a huge mistake, David. They understand exactly what's going on. What the president, look at whether he's going to do anything about this or not, we'll see. But what he is trying to eliminate is exactly what's going on. Pay for play. That's what's happening right now. What they're trying to make it is to be a true NIL, like they said, where guys can earn money for their name, image and likeness. But we all know that's not at all what it's not close to what's happening. No, no, it's not. I mean, I think this is a bunch of hooey. OK, there's a part of it that I'm actually impressed with that. I think it shows, OK, this is well-rounded. I'm glad you're going to get their opinions. First off, to get Adam Silver's opinion, to me to get a major commissioner of a major sport. Well, not a major commissioner, a commissioner of a major sport. This is a sport without a commissioner. What have a lot of people said? It needs one. So I think actually putting a commissioner of a major sport in the room, okay, you know, even if it's one answer for a minute and a half, it might provide something very noteworthy to the roundtable discussion. both the president of fox sports eric shanks and the espn chairman essentially their president jimmy pataro are going to be in the room well think about it can i just stop you there because first off invitations have been sent out no one has yet said that they're going to attend there is there are still questions of whether or not this meeting ever happens okay so what's the date has anybody said yes we don't have a date no one said yes we do have a date it's a week from today it's it's going to be friday afternoon march 6th okay we do have a date trump basically you know is at lunch friday is done working on the other pressing issues of the country and supposedly this is what they're talking about in the afternoon college sports So several current ADs are going to be invited, including the Notre Dame athletic director. You mentioned Tebow. Charlie Ward is also going to be there from the former players, both Heisman Trophy winners. And also in Ward's case, he played both football and basketball. So anyway, that's Condoleezza Rice also going to be there. She's a sitting member of the college football playoff committee. I will say I've had a couple of lovely football conversations. She gets right to it. Right to it. I think there's some people that should have been invited that I didn't see on the list. I think Eric Dickerson should be there to show what it was like when guys got paid. Maybe the tight end there from Oklahoma, Fiers. Keith Jackson. Keith Jackson, sorry. I think Keith Jackson should have been invited. Do they just show clips of the U 30 for 30 and the death penalty SMU 30 for 30 when we're talking about paying players? Hey, guys, if you haven't gotten a full picture of how it's done, here's how it's done. Hit the button. Right. I mean, did Uncle Luke get invited or is it that Shapiro, that was the guy that was the next bag man for Miami? Are either of those guys going to be there? I think that's important to show how it was done. Okay. You mentioned bag men Right now who the most prolific bag man in the sport It texas tech guy right right he spending he playing both sides yes he is all kinds of money on texas tech and then running ads he's the one responsible for running ads that money's ruining college sports it's it's it's brilliant i think okay he's on both sides of the coin right cody cody campbell is his name And yes, if you saw the ads during the season about all the money in college sports, and by the way, for a year, he's been calling for a conference like this, that we need to get a bunch of people who cover as many bases as possible, pardon the baseball analogy, in the room to discuss the future of college athletics. And he's one of the 35 that's invited. Here's my thing. I don't know. I mean, unless you've got something family related that is a really BFD, and it might even have to be a wedding or a funeral, I don't know how you don't attend this unless your health's bad. Or if you don't think it's going to do anything. I just don't. David, I get it. I guess he could sign an executive order declaring pay for play illegal. What is it that there, what else is he going to be able to do to change things? And I'm being serious when I, that's it, right? That's his, he can't get Congress to pass a bill. You know, that's, that's not his job. So the only thing he can do, which he's done a lot of, is pass an executive order. Right? True. But I will say he's never put his full weight behind something involving college athletics. Yes, Congress has not passed the legislation that a lot of people in college sports want them to. But Trump's never put all his political capital behind it either. He's just said we need to do something. So, you know, a lot of Republicans have a problem saying no to him. And they got the numbers right now. Close, but they got the numbers. So, you know, I don't think it's a bad thing. I don't think talking is ever a bad thing. Okay, my guess is I'm not going to like their conclusions. I'm happy that there are several ADs in the room. I do think that's important. I think Tebow is an interesting get because we all know if there's a college athlete in the last 20 years that deserved to get paid money that didn't, he's the guy. Man, what would he have gotten coming back for that senior year? It's got to be eight figures, right? Well, I mean, at Miami when they paid him? I think Urban would have had to chip in to the pot to bring him back in 2009. Oh, my goodness. So I got, you know, call me a bit of a cynic here. I just, I wonder what it's going to accomplish. You're right. Talking's never a bad thing. It really isn't. And I'd be a hypocrite to say that it is. But I'm, I'm hoping, I'm hopeful something good happens. I'm hoping that it's not grandstanding. Miller and Bolt, the starting five. That's next. You're listening to Miller and Moulton. And now, here's Mark Miller and David Moulton. 22 minutes until the top of the hour. Pat Kerwin will join us one hour from now, live from Indianapolis. He's been at the Combine for the last three days. I hope he has had tremendous meals on SiriusXM's account. I really do. I hope he has just hit them up, you know, sitting at tables with coaches and GMs and say it. Hey, guys, I got this. Okay, that's what I hope. Pat, one hour from now. Steve Carney, talk a little raise, a little lightning, since he covers them both. And Bill Bender, two hours from now, to talk a couple major college football issues. Right now, it's time for... The Starting Five. Five big stories you need to know. Here is the Starting Five. Brought to you by Lee County, Florida. Building a better community through BST. Business, sports, and tourism. We go to the NFL. The Combine and Indy and the Colts made some news yesterday. They've given quarterback Anthony Richardson permission to seek a trade. Did you find it interesting, David? and maybe it's not true, but the quick article that I read on it said that there would be plenty of teams interested in Richardson. And I was like, really? Because I don't think he can play. So this person who wrote the article seems to think that this trade could happen really quickly. Well, I do think it will happen quickly because it's not just 32 starting quarterbacks. I don't think anybody is acquiring him thinking, well, now we have our starting quarterback. I mean, they may lie to him and say, you know, you can compete for the job. But, Mark, I think they're looking at it as they view him as one of the 64 best quarterbacks in the league. And secondly, this year coming up is the final year of his rookie deal. I don't think the Colts are going to pick up his fifth-year option, and I'd be surprised if the team that acquires him picks up his fifth-year option. So to me, I think it's a very cheap way to potentially upgrade a backup quarterback, but also to get a look at him for a year behind closed doors and see whether or not, you know, how much of it was injuries as to why he can't play or how much of it is, you know, Indianapolis, quite frankly, why he can't play or how much of it is now he just can't play. so uh i guess because i'm in the camp that i don't think he's close to one of the 64 bets and i don't think he can play it just struck me a little odd right i got it i got it the dolphins have been mentioned as yeah you know yeah two for richardson and obviously financially it doesn't work but the dolphins would pick up the difference so that it was you know a wash or thereabouts but that this way the Dolphins would have a young project quarterback in-house and take a look at him for a while. Remember, the guys running the Dolphins now came from Green Bay. Two years ago, what did the Packers do? They gave up a seventh round pick for Malik Willis. Did anybody in the league think Malik Willis could play when the Packers acquired him? so it's another reason why i wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in miami to me also this only gives more leverage to daniel jones i mean heck if they're not even going to keep him on the roster my goodness jets and titans made a good old-fashioned deal yesterday player for player need for need titans needed a pass rusher jets said hey take jermaine johnson off our hands when Sala was the coach of the Jets they drafted Johnson late first round he had a couple of good years with Sala running the defense there meanwhile the Jets needed a big old defensive tackle in the middle to stuff the run remember they traded away Quinton Williams so they got 360 pound Tavondre Sweat who's got two years left on a contract it also shows that the Jets are going to go and take the best edge rusher with the second overall pick of the draft. So I like this trade for both teams. Good player for player trade. Jets and Titans. Washington releases their starting center. Tyler, I don't know how to pronounce his last name. I'll be honest with you. B-I-A-D-A-S-Z. You know. And I have a feeling if I tried, it would come off as, pardon my quote, badass. And I really know that's not it. So anyways, 28 years old. He was okay the last two years, was under contract for one more years. Commanders have a choice. They can cut him immediately and save a little less than $3 million under the cap that they can start spending on March 11th. Or they can designate him a June 1st cut. They don't get any salary cap relief until after June 1st. But after June 1st, they get $8.3 million of cap relief. So they've got a decision to make. The Falcons have told Pro Bowl special teamer Kudaro Hodge, yeah, we're going to release you. Oi, Matt Ryan and the new GM, they got strong opinions on that roster. Cutting Cousins franchise tagging pits is apparently the way they going to go All right Cutting their best special teamer It not costing them that much money That interesting The NFLPA Remember last week, the NFL won. They got the injunction that, you know, the NFLPA can't make public their survey amongst 1,700 players as to organizations. Right. Right. I thought we might spend a little time on this later, but yes. And we will. And we will. And what did we say when the NFL won? This is hysterical. Like, this isn't going to get leaked out? Well, I will say, David, you and I had a long discussion on it. You were wondering if someone would leak it out because of all of their ties to the league. You know, which group, ESPN, Pro Football Talk, which is owned by NBC. And, you know, you thought, and I actually agreed with you, that it would be the Athletic because they don't have ties to the NFL. Nope. ESPN couldn't get that out fast enough. Right. So, by the way, third year in a row, do you know what organization graded out as the best organization in the league according to over 1,750 players? Because we're the Miami Dolphins. That's right. Miami Dolphins. Miami Dolphins number one in the player rankings. Miami Dolphins number one. Vikings number two. Commanders number three, and I think that folks would be surprised, is who came in with an F minus the worst organization in the league is the Pittsburgh Steelers. Yep. They're cheap, is basically what the players said. Right, like the coaches, like the trainers. don't like the travel, don't like the food, don't like the locker room. I mean, they couldn't bash the Steelers enough. For the record, the Bucs were 29th. Right. Right. What I found interesting is the players graded everyone's field. Well, I expected the bottom 10, 15 fields to all have artificial turf. Tampa Bay's field is near the bottom. Pittsburgh's field is considered, it was voted, I think, the worst field in the league yeah very interesting 1759 players responded to this survey do the math that's like just about everybody we mentioned it college football president trump convening a roundtable discussion of college about college athletics a week from today at the white house 35 people received invitations. No active head coaches invited, but several current ADs and university presidents. College Hoops. Michigan State went to Mackey Arena and beat Purdue. Came from behind in the second half. 13th ranked Spartans, 76th. 8th ranked Boilermakers, 74th. Fourth home loss for Purdue this year against a ranked team. Michigan, Illinois, Michigan State, Iowa State. Those are good teams. I mean, they could all end up in the top 10 at the end of the year, but still, you know, people go to Mackey and get beat for a long time. Not this Purdue team. In the A sun, a terrible loss for FGCU and a terrific win for North Florida. FGCU with a four-game winning streak and a nine-point lead at the half. They're the fifth-place team in the conference, and North Florida was tied for last. And they got whooped in the second half. And the Ospreys, 76-70. Jacksonville, last home game. They beat Stetson 89-85. FAU, a winner at home over Temple by four. FIU, a loser on the road at Sam Houston by 33. FAMU is in the middle of the pack of the SWAC. They beat Southern Bethune with a three-game lead in the SWAC. And they went on the road and beat Grambling last night, 76. 71. Ten games in the NBA. We won't give you all of them, but Heat and Magic both lose fairly close competitive games. Philly 124-117. Philly is the six. Miami is the eight.
