Summary

The Confused Breakfast hosts conduct a 32-franchise tournament bracket to determine the greatest movie franchise of all time, debating matchups across action, horror, comedy, and sci-fi franchises. After multiple rounds of elimination, Batman emerges as the winner, beating Lord of the Rings in the final due to its diverse iterations and continued expansion potential.

Insights
  • Franchise longevity and expansion capacity matter more than trilogy perfection—Batman's multiple interpretations across directors and eras outweighed Lord of the Rings' perfect but finite trilogy
  • Rewatch value and personal emotional connection are primary decision factors for franchise ranking, often overriding critical acclaim or cultural impact
  • Sequel quality significantly impacts franchise perception—franchises with weak later entries (Jurassic World, Hobbit trilogy) lose ground despite strong originals
  • Practical effects and directorial consistency create franchise durability—Mission Impossible's Tom Cruise stunts and Peter Jackson's LOTR direction were cited as franchise strengths
Trends
Franchise fatigue from over-expansion—audiences prefer franchises that know when to stop (Back to the Future trilogy) versus endless sequelsDirector-driven franchises outperform studio-driven ones—single vision (Nolan, Jackson, Soderbergh) creates more cohesive franchises than multi-director approachesIP expansion beyond films matters—Star Wars' peripheral stories and expanded universe content influences franchise ranking despite mixed qualityCharacter iconography drives franchise loyalty—Michael Myers, Batman, James Bond remain franchise anchors regardless of sequel qualityNostalgia and childhood media consumption heavily weight franchise preferences over objective quality metricsPractical effects and tangible filmmaking techniques valued over CGI-heavy modern approaches in franchise comparisons

2026 is shaping up to be a pretty great year. Project Hail Mary was awesome, Spielberg has another Alien movie coming out, The Prospect of Will We or Will We Not cover Shawshank this year. And Christopher Nolan has the Odyssey coming out. But you know what Odyssey is gonna take this year on a magical journey for me personally? It's trying all the amazing beers that Big Rove Brewery has to offer. Whether it's the incredibly tasty, hot forward IPAs like Color TV, a smooth, refreshing taste of an arms race, or the chill vibes of Low Wake, a perfect addition to the party on the boat while you're cruising the lake. Then there's those beers that can just do no wrong and fit the occasion no matter what. But the classic neighborhood beer, you've seen a streak on the show. Then there's Paper Sun, a Mexican logger that after your friends ask what you've brought to the get together, you'll say, a few small beers. Matter of fact, I'm gonna try one of those right now. Okay, let's go. Oh yeah, you can try some of these beers that I've just described on this ad right now. And many more. If you go to biggrove.com and order some for yourself or stop in at any location in Iowa, including Seoul and Iowa City, Des Moines, or Cedar Rapids, and Omaha, Nebraska, and soon to be Kansas City. We try to make things tough for ourselves. Pretty sure we just created the toughest tournament bracket of all time. And I don't know what's going to happen when we leave this room after about 60 minutes here. I don't know. Gee, you guys just might turn on us for this conversation. But also fucking start your own podcast, Jesus. It's not up to us to validate your opinions. It is, though. I mean, it isn't. Yeah, it's not. I mean, what do you want us to say? We'll say it. We'll say whatever you want. We'll say whatever you want us to say. Just join us at Patreon at govtspot.com. Slash, computer. Well, we decided that we're going to try to rank the greatest movie franchise of all time, franchise, including everything that had a part to do with it. And we're going to do it tournament style, because we believe that is the best way to do it. We've come up with 32 franchises. And here they are in order. Well, and these are three movies or more. A movie franchise by our definition is considered three or more movies. Spread over however much time you need. But it is a franchise. Number one seed, just the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Juggernaut did so well this year. Two, Star Wars. And Star Wars includes any product that has been made into a movie. Star Wars. Boy, Disney's just cleaning up, aren't they? Batman. And that's going to include any Batman's, not just the Dark Knight. That's the Burton. That's everything. All right. Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, James Bond, every single bond included in this franchise. You're welcome. Back to the future. Nightmare on Elm Street, Fast and the Furious, Terminator, Pirates of the Caribbean, Toy Story, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Rocky, Halloween, Saw, X-Men, Born. Is X-Men Marvel? Yeah. X-Men is technically Marvel. Whoops. Do you want to change that right now? Let's get final destination back in there. No, let's not. Let's not change it. Where's he going? We got it on our mistakes. It's OK. Oh, I thought he literally thought he was ending the recording. He was just doing maintenance. OK, so we're owning this. X-Men is just the greatest Marvel product ever, so it gets its own category. It's fine. Right, right. Fine. James McEvoy. Did we already fuck this up? OK. Anyway, Born, Oceans, John Wick, Friday the 13th, Ghostbusters, Lethal Weapon, Mission Impossible, Austin Powers, Die Hard, Home Alone, Scream, American Pie, Karate Kid, and The Hangover. That is 32 franchises. Unfortunately, three ninjas did not make it, guys. It was number 33. It was number 33. It just was. It was right there, but it just couldn't kick back. Right next to National Treasure. Yeah. So. All right, well, here's what we're going to do. We're going to start with, who wants to start? Ooh. You know what? I want to go. I'm feeling frosty. And would you like to go clockwise or counterclockwise? I want to go. I want to go. This is clockwise. This is clockwise. OK, AJ is going to start this off clockwise. Two or more votes is how you get a winner in each bracket. Number one, Seed Marvel versus the number 32 Seed Hangover. Oh, man, what a debate. You know, as much as I love Zach Galifianakis and Bradley Cooper, among others, I have a great soft spot and love for the Marvel movies because I was a comic. I loved comic books. That was like the only thing I ever read. And so I have to go Marvel, guys. Yeah. I mean, Hangover is still one of the last great comedy franchises of all time. One of the funniest, still rewatchable, but you're going against the Marvel universe here. Totally. You're going against Spider-Man. You're going against Captain America. You're going against X-Men, which is funny, too, because you mentioned Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifianakis, which are two actors that the Marvel universe has not snagged yet. Good. There you go. See? So any day. That's not true, actually. He was Rocket Raccoon Bradley Cooper was. Fucking Christ. Yeah, sorry. Should we start this over? Still got Zach Galifianakis going. Sorry. Ed Helms is still holding strong. Yeah, it's got to be Marvel. All right. Moving on is Marvel. The next battle is the number 16 seed Halloween versus the number 17 seed Saw. I hate this because the Saw franchise is one of the greatest, like just overall horror franchises for what it's known for, for what it's done. But man, I'm a Halloween Homer. I don't rarely watch Saw, but I will always watch Halloween for the rest of my life. Even some of the ones I don't like that much, I just love the Halloween franchise more than I love Saw. It's two movies. Saw was famously, they churned out a movie a year and it came out on Halloween, which is fucking impressive because there's some quality in that franchise. But I want to take it back to the roots because Saw and Halloween, the first one of those franchises, changed everything, changed the landscape of horror, changed the landscape of cinema. But you're right. It's Michael Myers. It's one titular character. I know you have Jigsaw in there as the main bad guy, but who's more iconic? And to be honest, I would rather watch Halloween 6 than probably Saw 6. Listen, I was in the mall the other day. I saw zero Saw shirts, but I saw like 17 Michael Myers Halloween shirts. So like, come on. There it goes. I mean, it doesn't really make too big of a difference. And I don't even have a dog in that fight, really. But I probably actually would have said Saw. I think it was just a more influential movie as far as my movie brain goes. I respect that. It's survival. You like the survival aspect. I'm a big survival guy. But where it definitely dropped the ball for me was when it became a thing that the people in the games couldn't win. And they had a couple of moments in there. And I was like, this is bullshit. The timeline inconsistency is like, I don't even know if it's inconsistent, but I can't follow it. So that's a negative. Also the biggest joke possible of them making Jigsaw, like just putting a backwards hat on the actor, and him being a kid again or something, or being like in high school. It was like, what the fuck? I don't know. Want to play a game? Yeah, a basketball. Yeah, hopscotch. It goes to the graveyard. Four square, brother. All right, Sean, you are up next. Number nine seed Fast and the Furious versus number 24 Lethal Weapon. We're talking bed. We're talking your favorite, right? We're talking what it's done to society. What it's done. What it means to you. Fast and the Furious is really fun. I'm a big fan of number two, like we have covered. It's just pure fun. I mean, I love the first one too, but when you pit these two against each other, I'm going character. And I'm going shame black on this, because the character of Myrton Riggs, that kind of buddy in that duo and those actors, you just can't get more iconic than that. I don't care what sequel we're even talking about. Yep. If they're in it and then you had Jet Lee, fuck. Didn't Fast and the Furious have Jet Lee cameo somewhere, probably? Probably. Doesn't matter. Lethal Weapon takes it for me. Dude, Lethal Weapon, you don't get Fast and Furious, I don't think, without Lethal Weapon to a degree. I think it's important. I mean, you don't get it. Just like in my head, I was just seeing Riggs and Myrton driving cars and racing on street racers. Yeah. Riggs was a street racer. You know he was. It might have been a Grand National he was driving, but he was doing it. OK. But no, I mean, look, you don't get Brian and you don't get number two without Lethal Weapon. I'm too old for this, Co. Yeah. I think that was a line in that movie. So it's Lethal Weapon. I'm so excited to talk Lethal Weapon. That's a big upset. Fast and Furious was number nine seed upset by Lethal Weapon. I would actually vote Fast and Furious on this. And all your pieces. Yeah, just because of what it's done for the greater good of society. Is that right? AJ, you were up first here. The number eight seed nightmare on Elm Street versus number 25 Mission Impossible. It really helped out the Rocks career. Sorry to say that again. Mission Impossible versus what? Nightmare on Elm Street versus Mission Impossible. It is Mission Impossible. And that is Ethan Hunt is amazing, is an amazing character. Tom Cruise is Ethan Hunt. And Tom Cruise doing all the things that he does in those movies that's real is pretty mind blowing when it comes to movie magic, guys. So Tom Cruise is the movie magic for a lot of his movies. So I'm going Mission Impossible. Yeah, unfortunately, Sean's just kind of has the wrong friends when it comes to this movie stuff. Because I've seen one nightmare on Elm Street. And I've seen almost all the Mission Impossible's. And so it's very hard for me to knowing what Freddy's done. You know, the house that Freddy built. I mean, big deal. I just don't know much about it. So I got to go Mission Impossible. Tell me what the difference is between number four and number five Mission Impossible. Don't look it up. What happens in either of those? Well, that's very true. What happens in either of those? What happens in Freddy's fourth? They saved the fucking world. How about that? How about I tell you what's similar? They saved our lives, Sean. OK? Right now, there is a sub-buried in the bottom of the Marianas stretch with a nuclear weapon that's going to go off. Which one's that? Yes. That's the new, the last one. Ghost protocol or whatever. I don't think that's the last one. I think, well, whatever the newest. Dead Reckoning. Dead Reckoning, thank you. By the way, you can't decide for any of these fucking movies. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Philip Seymour Hoffman wasn't in any of the fucking fucking Friday movies or whatever the fuck we're talking about. Nightmare movies. The Fridays movies. Yeah, yeah, he wasn't. It was Ice Cube in, you know, in those movies. Mike Epps. Mike Epps, thank you. Chris Tucker Rock. State your piece. It's just, I'll bias aside, I would go Nightmare just because you talk about Tom Cruise doing all the practical stunts. All this movie is famous, this franchise is famous for all the practical effects, not even makeup effects, just all the practical effects of like making these dreams sequences look like dream sequences. Yeah. And I think that's totally missing in movies nowadays. Yeah. I apologize, man. Don't disagree with you on any of that. Thank you, Seymour. I am up the number four seed Lord of the Rings versus number 29 Scream. So this is a tough one for Scream because Lord of the Rings, even with the Hobbits, which, you know, most people are like, you know, Hobbits are OK. Just looking at the, even the top three Lord of the Rings, the first three, even with two stinkers, it's still some of the greatest cinema ever. So Lord of the Rings has to move on for me on this one. And it was up against what? Scream. Had him look over it. I was like, you want to verify this? I know. This is a number two Scream is like one of my favorite horror movies of all time. I love that second movie. So we're doing that this year, right? Not even for sequel. Maybe I'll take it for Halloween. Is that the one that starts out in the movie theater or whatever? OK. Like I get that. I will tell you this, that scene alone, even just the idea of that scene has given me insane anxiety about those scenarios. People who do like the mass mob thing or whatever, and they all dress up in the same things. I'm not going to be there. There's no way. I won't be there. I will not be there. Yeah, I just and I think unfortunately, I think that's kind of where the franchise is for me. I love number two. But for talking, putting them against Lord of the Rings, it's probably got to be Lord of the Rings. I mean, you know, like I would I'd probably say a lot of the Scream sequels, even most recent ones, are better than the Hobbit movies. I'm not going to disagree, actually. But the overall body, it's tough to be. I mean, that's going Lord of the Rings, probably going to go further in this. If it does, the Hobbit really takes away from that. It's going to be tough. That reputation. I think that stuff, the those the the movies that take away from a franchise are certainly they come up in like the next stackings. But yeah, I mean, now you guys, it's it's Lord of the Rings. And I agree with that. I think it changed movies and they train that those movies transcend time. It's like they they don't age. It's like they were made last year for me. Like they just always are. Sean, number 13 seed Jurassic Park versus the number 20 seed Oceans 11 franchise. Yeah, right. This is this is actually very similar. You've got like the the ones and then you've got the fuck. Because I haven't seen two in a while and I really want to watch two. The Lost World. I really need to rewatch it. But man, I on on this bracket, I got to go rewatchable. I really do like Jurassic Park is obviously a fucking masterpiece. One of the best movies ever made. But as a franchise, I think Oceans might take it. Well played. It is tough because I was just talking with a friend of mine and we were we somebody we one of us referenced Jurassic Park and we were just thinking about it. That movie, the reveal in that movie is maybe one of the top reveals in in cinema of revealing the dinosaurs. You know what I mean? When they like he turns her head is just like you need to fucking see this. It's such a massive moment in movies. But like you're right. It's hard for me to just want to go back and watch those movies again. Like I got to be in the right mood. And I I'm a huge fan of like the Oceans movies. Number one, number two is a bit of a lull. Number three is fantastic. So we're talking about like rewatch ability and how much I want to rewatch movies out of the franchises. I think I'm on Oceans as well. And really what it is is like we were saying the the sequels affected. Yeah, I think role movies. I could give two shits. No, I'm not seeing a single one just came out. And I didn't I know I didn't do well at all. Because it's just they if tomorrow I walked up to a movie theater and they had the newest Jurassic Park and the newest Oceans Eleven franchise. I'm picking Oceans Eleven. Yeah, I mean, it's a good point of why we're talking about these franchises and everything. Eventually, you got to let the IP go and move on. That's what I mean. Like I put in my mind like this, Jurassic Park masterpiece up against Oceans 11. It's Jurassic Park. Sorry. Yeah. Jurassic Park, the Lost World and then the Oceans 12. Like it's a little tougher, but I'm still going Jurassic Park. Oceans 13 and then you get dressed like Jurassic Three. I'm like, something an edge is happening. And then like the Jurassic World movies happen here like, well, I mean, whatever. Yeah, it just takes too much away from it. All right, AJ, I believe you are up. Number 12 Toy Story versus number 21, John Wick. Toy Story versus John Wick. Pretty much the same. I mean, they are basically the same thing. Think about it. You know, don't touch my dog. Don't touch my owner, kid, guy, you know, same thing, same premise. And don't touch my Andy. That's basically what it is. Um, man, that's really frigging hard. Toy Story is fun for all ages. John Wick is fun for. Guys who have a fantasy about like, you know, getting their revenge for a minute and then they move on, um, who have like probably low testosterone. Low to low to low tea. Sorry. Tea out. I'm going to I love the John Wick movies. I revisit. I watch number one, probably like I turn it on like maybe once a month. But I will say the Toy Story movies stayed really, really good, very consistent, except for like, I think number three was the one that was a little iffy. I'm going to go Toy Story, guys. It sucks. Sucks that they came up together. But I mean, you're talking about Toy Story as a franchise. It's one of the most important animated series out there. Yeah, I got to go Toy Story. Same. It's going to be Toy Story. I mean, like I will say, John Wick, all those movies, every sequel that came out, I was like, how could they do this? How could they get better and better and better? Yep. But Toy Story just means the same thing. Yeah. I am up on the next one here. We've got the number five juggernaut of the Harry Potter series versus number 28 Home Alone. And, you know, we're talking about this in the grand scheme of things. You've got how many Harry Potter movies? I think there were seven Harry Potter movies. You've got that's a Harry potty. Seven to eight of some of the best selling IP in the world books, movies, everything. Gansler. Sorry. You've got Home Alone, which we've talked about quite a bit, is there's two of the greatest Christmas movies ever, two maybe even being better than one. Yeah. Rarity. Then you've got some of the biggest dog trash on the face of this earth in three and four and whatever the fuck happened after that. You know, we did a we did a watch with number three. And up until it got to the part with the bad guys in the house, it was a good movie. We all kind of felt that way, right? It was fun. And then it became what the heck is going on? This is awful. But so, yeah, you're right. But I famously am not a Harry Potter fan and I'm going Home Alone on this. Wow. It's just it's. This is actually really tough. She either really love Harry Potter or you're just kind of like whatever. Yeah. That's how I feel, at least. Man, I'm going to I'm going to throw a vote in for Harry Potter. Yeah, because send it back to this guy. You send it right to me. You guys you guys literally put this decision right on to me. I knew this would happen. I wanted to go counterclockwise. Mike, you knew it was going to. You're like my daughter. When I say would you rather do this or that, whatever the second one is. So pick. That's what I said to you. That's why I said you want to go counterclockwise or clockwise? Whenever I ask that to Harrison, I just say I ask the question and then I reverse the answers again and ask him immediately again. OK, so to make him make him choose. So. All right. So. All right, let's decipher here, guys. Either way, I'm going to disappoint my son in this decision. We've we've been watching the Harry Potter or sorry. We watched the Harry Potter movies a lot when he was younger, because it was like at nighttime, there are darker toned movies. Easy to watch at night. They're not overly in your face for the most part, except for obviously some magic spells. But then you have Home Alone, which I've never been more proud of my son. Wanted to watch Home Alone and Home Alone Two back to back in the midst of April. So. Right, Sean. So I am going to. We're talking about we're talking about franchises and I. I it is Harry Potter. It is unfortunately it is Harry Potter, but I am such a Home Alone fan and Home Alone Two, I believe, is my favorite Christmas movie of all time. I just want to go on record. All right, Sean, we are into the other side of the bracket here. We've got the number two ranked Star Wars franchise versus the Karate Kid franchise at number 31. Star Wars. Yeah. It doesn't hold a can't like Karate Kid. The first one's one of my favorite movies of all time, but that franchise, I'm sorry. I believe you gave that a 10. Yeah. The first because it was like fairly early in our in our careers. And but it was like the first 10 you gave out or something. Might have been, I think so. It's pretty epic. I think I did bring it down later. Yes. Like 9.9 or something like that. Yeah, yeah. Nice. Yeah, there's some angles in there. Don't quite work. Look, unpopular, unpopular opinion. I'm actually I actually really enjoyed watching. I actually always enjoyed the next Karate Kid with Hillary Swank. Thought it was a fun movie. That being said, guys, it's Star Wars. Yeah, Star Wars. Yeah. Easy, easy, easy. AJ, number 15 seed Rocky versus the number 18 seed Ghostbusters. You want a Ghostbusters in this? You are. Are they making an exit right now? No. Why didn't know they'd go up against Rocky? Look, you can't count out an underdog. OK, guys, although. Look, we're talking about Rocky as a franchise, and that means you also. I believe I believe you also get to include the Apollo movies in those. Do you guys agree or disagree? The Creed movie. Yeah, yeah, the Creed movies. Yeah, I'll allow it. Yeah. Boom. So it's it's got to be Rocky, guys. And Ghostbusters, I did make a case and say we were missing it from our list. They're still putting out movies, and I think one of them, maybe two of them have been pretty solid. I like the. Paul Rudd, they're fun movies. I like it a lot. Great callbacks. I got to stick with Rocky on this. Yeah. Yeah, that's unfortunate for Ghostbusters. You just Rocky is the equivalent of just a juggernaut franchise. So I got to go Rocky, too. Honestly, don't really care about either of these franchises, but if I had to pick, it'd be Rocky. OK. AJ, you started that last one. Yes. We got the number 10 seed Terminator franchise versus the number 23 seed nonmarvel X-Men series. Listen, I'm an X-Men complete and utter homer. I I loved all these movies when they came out, despite their flaws. I liked some of the new ones quite a bit. It's it's one of the best done individual franchises out there, I think. But I also, man, you're talking about Terminator one and two. Again, even if the rest of it was kind of dog shit, still Terminator one and two. I liked the third one. Rise of Machines. I kind of like that. I do, too. And you know, some of the newer stuff I have not seen, but I got to throw Terminator in this one, which is crazy to say, but I have to. Yeah, I Terminator is one of my like my favorite things ever as a kid. And yeah, I never really was into X-Men as much as I was Terminator. I watched the animated show more than I did, you know, any of the movies. But when the movies came out, I was so fucking hyped for them. But man, I can't go back on my boy, James Cameron. Damn, it's it's Terminator. There it is. Terminator solid, man. And I as much as I if we were just talking about like Logan and like or of course, Hugh Jackman almost and maybe some of the if I could pick and choose from that franchise, maybe it'd be a contender. But I get it. X-Men has an advantage here, though, because they're kind of still in it. See, that's kind of right. No wrongs. A little bit now we can assume that they're back in the Marvel franchise. We have we have cut off that IP from the Marvel cinematic universe. And you're at Sean, you are up number seven back to the future versus number twenty six Austin Powers. Oh, man. You got two like three almost perfect comedies. Like that's a solid. So like as much as much as the hangover. Yes. As much as the hangovers is like a solid, solid comedy franchise. You awesome powers. It's got to be in that conversation, too. Although you're going against back to the future. About as perfect of a trilogy that has ever been made. Yeah. So that's my vote back to the future. Yeah. KFC shared KFC Barstool. Kevin just shared with us like a video of a guy of what's his name? Red Haired Comedian. Carrot Top. Yes, thank you. It's not. No, that's not him. And I will look him up because he deserves the credit. He works with Pete Holmes a lot on and his like Batman stuff, Batman. But. They were talking about how like the most perfect context of McCarthy Redhead. McCarthy Redhead, thank you so much. It's the it's how airtight and sound the idea of him having that flyer and the context of him having the flyer, the reasoning of having the number written on the back of it and how well that is written and put together. We need nothing else to feed us of why he has that. And like it's not circumstantial almost by any means. It's there's a reason behind it, you know, and it's so well done. I just wanted to bring that up and make a put a stamp on back to the future for us here. AJ, you are up. Number three seed Batman versus the number 30 seed American pie. Oh, man. You know, American. You guys, you guys are so performative. Have we been called performative? We are now. All right. The kids are saying. Yeah, yeah, the kids are saying it. Dude. Yeah. American pie. If we're talking about fan franchises that piss me off, it would be American pie. It's Batman, guys. It's bad. I love I love the American. I know you guys. But if you were talking like maybe just the early Batman's, we might have a little more of a discussion. But then you throw the dark nights in there and it's like, no, the newest Batman. No, we're good. It's Batman. Yeah. I like American wedding. I'm kind of excited for I think there is another one coming and I'll watch it any day. America. There was already a reunion. And what's this one? American death funeral. I think somebody dies. Yeah. American. I like the second American pie when they go to the beach house for the summer. Dude, that like every single opening, see every scene transition of that is just like, guys, we're going to the beach. Dang it. Dang it. Dang it. Dang it. Dang it. Dang it. Dang it. Dang it. We should get jobs doing paint and then we'll have a party. Dang it. Dang it. Dang it. Dang it. Steve fingered his first girl. Dang it. Dang it. Dang it. Broker Hyman. It's all right. It's OK. All right. It's moving on. That was you started that one. Yes. OK. No, you started that one. You did. I did. I think so. I think you did. OK. OK. Yeah. Because you go. Pssss. Yep. And you faked it. Oh, that's right. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Number 14 seed, the Indiana Jones franchise versus the number 19 seed, the born identity franchise. That is to me. I love me a good born movie. I'm so glad we did the first born. I think the second one's probably on its way maybe someday. But you're talking about Indiana Jones here. It's Indiana Jones. Yeah, man. I can't wait till we do. I really wish. How have we not? I really wish we did. Not Temple of the Temple of the Doom. Temple of the Doom. Temple of the Doom. In this in this month. Because I think that's my favorite one. But yeah, those that trilogy, you can take out Crystal Skull and you can take out the most recent one like days are. They are kind of blemishes on the franchise. It's got to be Indiana Jones. Yeah. Yeah. I think it has to be. I mean, born identity movies, they're kind of instant classic movies. But Indiana Jones, one, two and three. Number three is my favorite. I mean, it's every one of those initial movies is somebody's favorite one. You know what I mean? It's it's very rare. I think it's very even across the board. So yeah. Sean, coming to you. Number 11 seed Pirates of the Caribbean versus number 22 seed Friday the 13th. Friday the 13th. I could give two shits about Pirates movies. It's Pirates of the Caribbean for me. And I don't say that just because of it. It's going against Friday the 13th. Pirates is a is a great Pirates of the Caribbean is a is a really great like big time franchise. You know what I mean? I think that they make they created their worlds really, really well in that. That's I don't like this matchup at all because there's something really good about both these pirates is pirates completely created this like wow. Like out of left field, they're like, here's a franchise. Yeah. Yeah. And it just went huge. But like Friday the 13th man is just like also essentially kind of created a franchise and like out of nothing. And and this this IP of Jason Voorhees. I don't I don't necessarily think either of these will go further than this. But I'm a Friday the 13th guy vote on this one. I have to. Yeah. Damn. And last one of this round first round, AJ number six, the entire James Bond franchise versus number 27, the diehard franchise. Wow. That's a good one right there. I think we kind of made our case with some of these diehards. You know, most the diehard movies were not even written as diehard movies. They were other people's like stuff and writing and they made it into a John McLean movie. I'm going James Bond because those are again movies. That have been going on for decades. I'm a James Bond on this. Unfortunately, we just did with the vengeance. Yeah. It's no secret. I hated diehard. Now I'm like, look at diehard. James Bond has transcended three to four to five generations of people. Yeah. And it just still keeps going that same story. And people still go, give it to me, give it to me. James Bond's I'm going James Bond. I have to break it down to who, what kind of main character I want more. I want the more scrappy John McLean type than I want the I know everything. I have all the tools James Bond, but I can't argue. I am them. Sure, there's better movies than just one in three really. Yeah. Diehard in my opinion. Yeah. All right. First round is complete. Our next battle is the number one seed Marvel versus the number 16 seed Halloween. Should we reverse order now? It's up to you, bro. Can we reverse order now? Sure. Do we do that? So that means I start, but it goes counterclockwise now. Yes. Cause you were going to be starting it, right? Yeah. Yeah. All right. Let's go. Oh my God. He just made it hard because I wanted. Oh yeah. I wanted me to say Marvel him to say Halloween and then you would say Marvel. And if you want to, hey, if you don't want to do it, you said it was up to me. I don't know why it's up to me, but it could be up to you. You have the computer in front of you. I love Halloween so goddamn much. It just the look of the, just seeing the word on paper. I go, uh, just make it orange here. But fuck dude, this is the Marvel universe, which now includes X men. Okay. I, I gotta say Marvel. I got a Sean. It's to you. Or wait, it's to Adrian. Now, twice. It is, it is Marvel. Marvel movies. By a long shot. Well, yeah. Age Voltron is a great movie. So is winter soldier. So it's Marvel. I would say Halloween four over most any Marvel movie ever fucking made. Is that a good one? I like that one. It's right here. That's what you kind of liked that one. God damn it. You know what? And Halloween three for everybody, just a reminder, fucking awesome. Yeah. Fucking awesome. Halloween two rules. Halloween two. So good. I'll check out six. Scott Paul running it. Halloween five is real bad, but real fun. I'll check. I'll check. I'll check it out. I'll take that over. Captain America. I know. Sorry, Sean. All right. So we're going the opposite way now is back to AJ for lethal weapon versus mission impossible. 24 versus 25. Talk about a mission impossible. Wow. Wow. Got him. Lethal weapon versus mission impossible. As a franchise. Again, tell me what happens in ghost protocol. Just tell me. I didn't even know that was the right one. I was talking about dead reckoning. I know. Yeah. Ghost ghost ghost protocol. There is a system that they are using to manipulate reality in computers. Yeah, duh. Fucking idiot. He free dives and rides a plane up into the air on the outside. Oh, Phillips, you more often was a number three. The seven pegs in a few. Yeah, he is John. We directed the second one. I have a ton of fun watching the mission impossible movies. I I have to sit at lethal weapon on this guys. And I can't give any mother major reason other than the fact of just deep seated personal feelings for the movies. So they're just the movies, the kind of movies that I like the best. It's it's human stories. They're flawed characters. Yeah. You know, I just love that. Not that, you know, Ethan Hunt, maybe even a flawed character. But again, like I'm telling you guys, I just don't remember. Tell me what happens in one of those movies. I dare you. Oh, action suspense. They saved the world. Hello. Leave the weapons moving on. Sean, this one goes to you. Lord of the Rings versus the Oceans franchise. Lord of the Rings. OK, that's to me, too. Lord of the Rings. Lord of the. Lord of the Oceans. Lord of the Oceans. Oceans of the Ring. Oceans. Eleven rings. You know what? There is something to be said. Those are two. Those are two franchises directed by all those movies directed by the same person, like Steven Soderbergh directed all those Peter Jackson, you know, a lot of these franchises have different directors. They go different directions. That's true. They're all pretty consistent. Yeah. I do like that about these franchises. You bet. To me, we got Toy Story, the number 12 seed versus Harry Potter, the number five seed. I voted for Home Alone over Harry Potter last round. So there's no reason why I would not think that Toy Story is going to be better franchise than Harry Potter. And that's my vote. Oh, man. I am going to go. Between these two. We could have had a Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter final, maybe. Not a final, but a next round. It depends on you guys. I don't know, man. I don't think I want that. So I'm going to have to go. No, I'm just kidding. No, I think it's I think it's Harry Potter. Harry Potter for me. I'm going to have to go Toy Story on this. Motherfuckers. I just I can't wait to revisit these movies. Yeah. I I've recently revisited. I think we watched third one. It's probably about time we do this on the show. I am excited to do we really really need to. Yeah. Who just started that one? Got me all confused of the reverse. I did. You did. So, AJ, you are up Star Wars versus Rocky. Oh, buddy. Well, I can say I can safely say this. Personal feelings and movies that I want to of all of them that I want to rewatch more often than the than not. Would be Rocky. So I am going to go Rocky. Sean. Yeah, I mean, as good as a character that is, I just you can't. It's just the juggernaut of Star Wars. The Star Wars in like I'm bringing the the blemish that the the recent movies have. I think there's a couple of good ones in there. But even the prequels, I think there's there's some merit to those movies as well. But as far as like a one, two, three hit can't can't go wrong with Rocky. One, two, three punch in. Yes. Yeah, I love me some Rocky, obviously. But geez, man, it's that's that's a tough thing for Rocky. So I got to go Star Wars. Yeah, fair. Sean is a terminator versus back to the future. Man, time travel again. Yeah, I did. This is really hard. Yeah. Here's here's my thinking one and two Terminator. Perfect movies, in my opinion. Perfect. One and two back to the future. Perfect movies, in my opinion. You get to the third of each of those franchises and it's like, what do you like? Do you like AI machines fucking fighting that shit? Vagging arms, what's the name of your action bullshit? Or do you like fun whimsical doc and Marty fucking hanging out doing shit together, figuring stuff out? Maybe the best Tom Wilson we've ever seen. Absolutely. Um, comparing those movies, if I want to have a good time, it's back to the future. If I want to, if I want to, you know, feel feelings, feel feelings and and be excited and be scared and then I'd have to go to Terminator. I'm going Terminator. Oh, yeah, that's that sucks. Because we talked about it. I love I love the majority of the Terminator stuff and back to the future. We only have three. But I but it's it's like a perfect. It's one of the best trilogies of all time and one of the best written stories of all time. It's got to be back to the future. Thank there's really something to be said about. Hanging up your hat and jacket with three movies and saying we're done. Did it. We're not doing this. That's a real good point. Marty's son is back. Yeah, finds the time machine buried in a garage. Fuck. Okay. Okay. Like the moment the moment we get a fucking trailer of some kid lifting off a car cover of a DeLorean and you hear in the. Yeah. Fuck you. So then if that happens, we'll come back and we'll revise the rest of the story. We'll revise this. We need to do everything we can to keep Zemeckis alive. Because I think he's the only one keeping this just a trilogy. Yeah, no kidding. To be honest, dude, I think you're right, actually. Man. That being said, I'm going Terminator. I'm changing. I'm going back. Are you kidding me? Yeah. So you want back to the future? I do. Oh, wow. If I can, if you'll allow it. You only changed because AJ said Terminator because now you're not the only reason. Did you think that that was what I was going to say? Or no, I thought you were going to go back to the future. So he wanted to give the props to Terminator, but now he's like, what did I do? Was it the hang in your hat and jacket moment on three? It's kind of the that there was no more movies after the third. Some would say maybe a detriment because we don't have more like media, but some would say, dude, you did it. Stop. Hey, man, I'll say it. I've said it a hundred times. I'll say it again. The office had plenty of funny moments after Michael Scott left. It should have ended when Michael Scott left. There you go. That's it. I am up the entire Batman franchise versus Indiana Jones. I love Indiana Jones guys can't wait to do Temple of the Doom, but we're talking about we're talking about Batman here. Like the Burton, the two burdens alone could maybe sort of kind of compete with Indiana Jones. But then you throw in the dark night and the newest Batman. We are so pumped for the continuation of that. That's Batman for me. I think you're right. I am. My excitement alone. I'm glad you brought that up. My excitement alone for the next one of the Batman is. Yeah, it's enough to push me over the edge on that. I'm going back. There's so much to be excited about and just this Gotham in and of itself. Oh, God, did you guys penguin penguin was awesome. It was wonderful. You get like, yeah, the Batman, the most recent ones, more of like the detective seven ish kind of inspired detective story. Tim Burton's Batman's very comical. Then you have the I mean the animated series too. And then the grounded Nolan stuff. There's so much to pick from. There's literally something for everyone in the Schumacher ridiculous. Yeah. Oh yeah. Yeah. You got Batman as well. Bat nipples. Aja, you're ending out this round here. Friday the 13th versus James Bond. James Bond. James Bond. James Bond. He's just singing the answer, I think. James Bond. It's the new theme song. Come on. This is going to win an Oscar. James Bond. Guns and roses is going to do it. Yep. What's the two movies? Friday the 13th franchise versus James Bond. I'm Friday the 13th. Come on. I love those movies. You know, just like Halloween. I don't even really like the first one as much as I do the sequels. The Friday the 13th. Yeah. Yeah, okay. I'm sorry, Sean. It's always coming to me, but it's James Bond here. It's fine. If you want just like solid. I helped you get Friday the 13th in this round. I appreciate it. If you want just solid, solid slasher movies. This is the one. You can't go wrong with the final chapter. I think number two is like maybe even like just pure, the pure slasher movie there ever is. Yeah. And then six is kind of zany and fun. Zany and fun. Everything you want out of your slasher's. Jason lives. It's a good one. It's going to get real tough here. The elite eight Marvel universe versus lethal weapon Lord of the Rings versus Toy Story Star Wars versus back to the future and Batman versus James Bond. Up next it's bread flan. This new band. I can say that right. Yeah. These people. I don't like the way you said that. Wow. Yeah like Australians. Go ahead. It's lethal weapon. I really I've just really I just think these are like negative movies. Negative movies. I like I wish there was a better battle for Marvel here that would have made it tougher. But I just think lethal weapons may be the weakest of all the eight on here unfortunately. So I got to go Marvel. AJ you're the tiebreaker. Well. Oh that's reverse directions. Do you guys want to go backwards. Let's let's do snake now. Lethal weapon baby. Whoa. Damn son. Marvel. Number one goes down. Let's go. Let's go. Sean just started that which I'm so confused now. Bring it Mike. So it's my turn to you. Okay. Lord of the Rings versus Toy Story. I enjoy a good Toy Story. I'm very pumped to do it on the show. But this is we're talking the Lord of the Rings here. Some of the finest things ever put on film. Even even what has there been four Toy Stories. I think so. Yeah. Four or five. Even if you kind of take out the hobbit and all that stuff. The three Lord of the Rings. Not only is it more watch time than Toy Story. Than four Toy Stories but they're better than the four Toy Stories. It's Lord of the Rings. It's Lord of the Rings for me as well. Yes. Yes. AJ. Star Wars versus Back to the Future. Oh easy. Shit. Star Wars versus Back to the Future. You know what. This is this is an interesting take. And here is now my rebuttal against Back to the Future. And what's that. Okay. Sean's getting a beer. He needs to drink on this one. Some of that big Grove dog. If there's a neighborhood in there I'll take one. No neighborhood. And I don't want one. Not today. Not today Satan. Not today. I am. This is this is what I'll say about Back to the Future now. They had three movies. Like I said we hung our hat on three movies. We walked away. That's great. I love everything. If it's Star Wars related I want to see more of that universe. And I really enjoy the fact that that franchise has grown into some other things and some other like peripheral stories outside of like the Skywalker storyline. Because there's so much more to explore on that. And just for that world. And I'm really glad that they have expanded on it for better or for worse in lots of different cases. So some stuff is great some stuff is not. I'm going to go Star Wars. Sean. Star Wars versus Back to the Future. Yeah of course I remember. Yeah. I remember. Yeah. Yeah. You went Star Wars. I did. Did the other movies come together? Did the other movies come together? Did the other movies come together? Did the other movies come together? Did the other movies come together? Did the other movies come together? Did the other movies come together? Did the other movies come together? Did the other movies come together? Did the other movies come together? Did the other movies come together? Did the other movies come together? Did the other movies come together? Did the other movies come together? Did the other movies come together? coming soon or I think it's already out, which we all asked for. We're like, give that to us. No comment. I'm going back to the future. So Star Wars, you said back to the future. This is, this is weird to me because the three back to the future movies to me are better than the three Star Wars movies. Like the first four, five, six, get the fuck out of here. You got it. But, and I love the sentiment of like back to the future. Just said, this is it. We're done. But then like some part of me does want more and like it kind of would be cool to have more back to the futures. Maybe they would be good. I don't know. But I don't know. I'm, I like Star Wars for the entertainment. Like people was like, yeah, like I liked all the three movies that came out. Like I thought the last ones, I thought they were great. First three, like Revenge of the Sith, like pretty dope. I like that one. Number three, Tiger Clown. I don't know. I think you got a, I think just based on the amount, the more that I can watch from Star Wars, I think I got to go Star Wars. Interesting. Which is weird. It was like the opposite of the last round. But it's like, ah, but, but it is good. Yeah. That's what I mean. Like, like, I love, I love that there's only those three, but you know what? I really want more and I want to be able to consume more and that's the greedy consumer in me of wanting to watch more stuff from that. Thank you for expanding in the Star Wars universe. Yeah. Yeah. Do we want to see crotchety Michael J. Fox return as Marty? As a dock potential, like kind of a dock replacement almost. I mean, think of the sequels with Harrison Ford and them. He's just like, can you please kill me? I want out. Kill me out. I want out. Yeah. Yep. Well, then Sean, you're starting the last battle here before the final four. We got the entire Batman franchise versus James Bond. Wow. Two quasi detectives. Quasi. Greatest detective versus the greatest destructive. It's Batman, baby. I got to go Batman. Respect. Probably would have ended up going Batman as well. You know what? I will throw James Bond out there as a, you might as well. Thanks for participating. I changed my boat. Sean did that to you. You did. All right. Sorry. I'm very sorry. I thought we were, I thought we had a moment together and but no, I don't want to be an AJ's team. Yeah, I don't want to be AJ. Yeah. You just started is my turn. This is the final four. We have a battle between lethal weapon and Lord of the Rings followed by a battle between Star Wars and Batman. I am starting the game here. Lethal weapon made it a lot farther than I thought it destroyed Halloween. It destroyed Marvel, but it cannot destroy Lord of the Rings. Lord of the Rings is my vote on this one. AJ. I don't know, man. If you had Lord of the Rings with guns, I think you have lethal weapons. So I got to go lethal. I'm just kidding. Man. No, look, lethal weapon movies. I'm going to, I want to say this. Lethal weapon movies are one of the most like ground like based, like ground zero for action movies, everyday action guy movies. You know what I mean? It is the groundwork. And I think every single one of those movies, and I believe they're coming out with another one, which I am very excited for. Why would they do that and not make nice guys too? I don't know. They should just put both those movies together. And that's it. But they should be in the same precinct. How about that? That being said, yeah, it is Lord of the Rings. I'm going to go Lord of the Rings. This is the Rings. Okay, Lord of the Rings spot in the final. AJ, you are going to start us off Star Wars franchise. Every movie ever made in that franchise versus the Batman franchise, every movie made in that franchise. Star Wars versus Batman. Two of the greatest fantasy fantasticalness things for people's children hoods. Jesus. And what's our other, this is Final Four. What's the other two movies? We already did it. Lethal Weapon versus Lord of the Rings. Lord of the Rings is in the final. Oh Lord of the Rings is in the final. Punched its ticket as you will. Shoot. Oh man, I should have gone Lethal Weapon. Wouldn't matter. I, I'm going, I'm going, I'm going to go Batman. I'm going Batman. These are two of my, the biggest childhood things in, these are two of the biggest things in my childhood that as far as media went. I watched Batman shit nonstop. I watched Star Wars shit nonstop. I have so much Batman toys. I have some of my Star Wars toys here in the studio. Some of my favorite video games are friggin Star Wars even. Yeah. This is movies. You know, you're right. Okay. Fine. I have to go Star Wars. Batman and a Star Wars to me. I don't like that at all. These are just, there's maybe some blemishes on both of their records, but the sheer amount of stuff that they've put out the man take, take the original Star Wars trilogy versus the Dark Knight trilogy. Like, yeah, fuck man. Oh man. That's just a straight up wash, if not a nod to the Batman. Batman has a few blemishes on my record. I, the Batman and Robin, I'm never going to watch probably until we do it on this show. And then what was the one after that? It was, it was the two Burton's Batman forever, Batman forever, which we did, I think. Did we? Yes. And then Batman and Robin. Yeah. We did the one with Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones. Yeah. We have not done Batman and Robin. I believe I liked better than the first Tim Burton one. Damn son. I think I did too. I think that I would like to piss off all the nerds. Oh no. I think I got to go Batman. Whoa. Let's go, baby. Let's go. We see, you see our analytics just go everything saying like listen, listening on this episode. It all just fell off right now. Everybody just stopped listening to this episode. The final battle starts with Sean, ends with AJ, Lord of the Rings versus Batman as an entire franchise. Listen, like I said, there's so much to choose from with Batman. So many iterations of it and some bad, some good. I would probably say there's some good from every iteration. And then Lord of the Rings, perfect trilogy, perfect, Hobbit and like even the spin-off shows, where I guess we're just talking movies right now, but I really don't care about the Hobbit at all. Maybe it's got us fans, but I wouldn't choose one of those over one of like even the Joel Schumacher's, one of the Hobbits over what one of the Joel Schumacher's. I'm going Batman. Yeah, I think you kind of nailed it, man. But for the sake of just pure comedy, you know, I love Lord of the Rings. God damn it. I think Lord of the Rings is one of the greatest things I've ever seen in cinema history. So Lord of the Rings for me. Everything Mike just said was bullshit. Well, then it's very easy choice for you, then, isn't it? No, I'm not saying that that's how I feel. I'm saying that's what you, that you're just lying to put this in my court. All right, listen, I went ahead and pissed off the Star Wars nerds. It's your turn now. Yeah, you're right. You're right. I gotta piss off the, now we gotta alienate the other half of Comic-Con. They call Lord of the Ringheads. Yes. Ringers. Lords of the Rings. This is the final. This is the best movie franchise of all time. Lord of the Rings, like, break it, let's break it down. Top three, like components or top four components of a movie. You know, we're throughout the franchise, if you will, talking about director, talking about editing, talking about music, talking about locations. I mean, Lord of the Rings is, again, it just transcends time. Like, Lord of the Rings just transcends time. Can I make another point? Yes. Lord of the Rings, the first three is just like, you feel like you're going on that adventure with them. And even the extended ones, I will, like another point to it, the extended ones don't feel bloated at all. They feel like they're necessary. Yeah. You know? So I have to say that towards that too, but I mean, I'm still going back. Still a Batman. And I think that, yeah, I think that's, it's a very good point. I mean, oftentimes when I'm actually like looking to turn on, like, I, I go back to two towers all the time. And when I go back to look for a Lord of the Rings movie, I usually pick an extended kind. It's coming up here in a couple of weeks, y'all. Two towers. That, and then you have Batman. And I think that if you're talking about across all those and all the iterations that we've gotten, as far as franchise goes, I think I'm going Batman because there's more, there is more to consume and enjoy throughout that franchise. Again, we're talking about franchises, not trilogies, and we're talking about having stuff to consume in this franchise. It's the same argument that we had for Back to the Future, right? They had three movies. They were perfect. They hung their hat on them. We haven't gotten anything else since. Well, that's a bummer because I want more Back to the Future for better or for worse. Sometimes, you know? That's how I feel about Batman. I've gotten a lot, a lot of options to consume and I cannot wait for the next one to come out. Batman franchise is the greatest movie franchise of all time. One more thing about Lord of the Rings. The Hobbit series may have ended Peter Jackson. Yuck. I think he wanted to end it. I'm just saying he got stuck with those movies. Like it was supposed to be Guillermo. Del Toro was supposed to go. And he got stuck and he said, I'm out. And that meant we didn't have any original Peter Jackson stories after that. Yep. Yeah. Yeah. And if you talk about Batman, the greatest part about it is it speaks to how great the idea of Batman is and the world of Batman because you have all these different ways of putting it on screen and it's always awesome in its own unique way. You can't redo Lord of the Rings. Yeah. You just can't. Yeah, it's true. It's done. And you can't do it. To that point, there's something to be said just about Gotham City. Yeah. Gotham City, to me, is as vast as the entire map of Lord of the Rings, Middle Earth. It is. It's just as vast and just as unexplored as the entirety of Middle Earth. And it's a city. It's that crazy and vast. And we go beyond that plenty of different times throughout the iterations and stuff. But that, I think there's something to be said about that. DC beats Marvel. DC beats Marvel. No, one portion of DC beat the entirety of Marvel. That's true. I would like to put up Spider-Man against Batman. And I would like to someday see how that stacks up. Going like one to one against them. Yeah, maybe that was Marvel's downfall is having everything lumped into one. True. It could have been. I mean, you got, hey, quantity over quality, quality, quantity. What do you got? It's what Conan said. Anytime there is a portal, I don't want to watch a movie. A portal? That's pretty great. I did not. Unless it's Rick and Morty because that's fucking awesome. Sure. Yeah. That's TV show. Yeah. Right. So. Well, you heard it. Send your hate mail to confusedbreakfistatgmail.com and put them in the Spotify comments. Would love to hear it. Or the YouTube comments. Just let us know you hate our guts. And I'll think about that for days. Your negative comments. It'll really affect us. It'll really affect my life. It will bring us down for a little while. Full well knowing that if we met in person, you'd be the nicest person ever because you'd be like, that's Mike. He's cool. Yeah. But you're still a piece of shit online. I'm talking to you. You know who I'm talking to. Really, really rude and not very thoughtful of you. Okay. Bye. Unless you put a lot of thought into it. Unless you justify it. Unless you use chat.gbt to write it up and perfect it. That's cool. Okay. Bye. I think Batman is a very good franchise. It's way day at Wayfair.
