Summary

Red Eye Radio hosts Gary McNamara and Eric Harley discuss their lack of interest in major sporting events like the Super Bowl and Olympics, citing changing personal preferences and concerns about political activism in sports. They also analyze recent constitutional issues regarding Second Amendment rights and election authority, plus discuss rising job layoffs in the private sector.

Insights
  • Declining sports viewership among aging audiences is driven by time investment concerns, political polarization in sports, and shifting entertainment priorities rather than lack of interest in competition itself
  • Constitutional rights like the Second Amendment require consistent federal standards across states; state-level variations create confusion and undermine the principle of uniform federal rights
  • Job market deterioration is accelerating with layoffs up 118% year-over-year and new hires at lowest levels since 2009 financial crisis, signaling potential economic headwinds
  • Political messaging clarity matters; ambiguous language from public figures creates media misinterpretation and requires constant clarification, impacting public understanding of policy
  • The professionalization of Olympic competition has eliminated the underdog narrative that historically drove American viewership and national pride in athletic achievement

Now it's Red Eye Radio, Gary McNamara and Eric Harley talk about everything from politics to social issues and news of the day whether you're up late or you're just starting your day welcome to the show from the Unident America Studios this is Red Eye Radio. All across America we are running radio he is Eric Harley and UnGerry McNamara. It's Super Bowl weekend the Olympic star. I don't care. Ghosts, sports. I mean all this stuff above bad bunny versus turning point you was saying all this. Be honest with you. I'm not a bad bunny fan. I'm not a kid rock fan. I'm not a big country fan. You know so to me I understand I understand the whole the argument we've gone over it with bad bunny but I just I haven't watched the Super Bowl since 2006. I have to work it's a work night and I just I haven't watched it so well and even when I did it it never moved the needle. You know the half time show. Yeah I don't care. It was like okay you know I mean I'm sitting here anyway right it's on whoever it is you know whatever and then it's back to the game it's the game and quite frankly for me if I had my choice it's a distraction do the half time like you normally do it analyze the first half get back to the game. I mean I know why they do it. I know you know because it's it's not about me but for me it's about the game and it's going to be I mean it's an all day thing. Yeah the one game is an all day into the night prime time thing and I just don't have that that kind of time even if I weren't working on Sunday nights I wouldn't I probably wouldn't invest that much time. Well I just find it interesting I mean they they stars you know they they start the pregame show so early but I don't watch. I think you may you may you may to point you may to point I have no interest in what any of the analysts have to say about sports anymore right I just don't care. Yeah yeah I don't care. All I care about if I care if there's a game I want to watch I just want to watch the game I watch the game. Maybe a little bit of if my home team wins some of the press conferences afterwards. Yeah our interest in other than that I just I just don't care and it's as I've gotten older it's just what pleases me to watch has changed it just has for example I have and I know people gonna I have no interest in the Olympics at all none. No no you know now the story that came out yesterday was a little bit interesting about the injection of the the investigation now of the injection of the and let me make sure I get it here now what's it called the injection of the high high luronic acid into the genitals of the ski jumpers that makes them wear larger suits which then increases their lift and therefore their distance. This is why I didn't take up ski jumping. I yes I that I mean that got my interest but again people say you're not interested in watching the Olympics. No now if there's highlights of a lose or a Bob sled or a ski jumping accident yeah that might catch my attention you know a mishap whatever is they all going to fly all over the place. Hopefully you don't think it's hurt. The agony of defeat right the exactly the agony of defeat. I'm just every time it's like I only watch I only watch NASCAR for the crashes isn't true I really don't watch NASCAR. I mean if it's on I'll watch five minutes of something but I was if I wanted to see a train wreck I'd go back and revisit the Kamala Harris campaign. Join the movement independent Americans from believe follow and listen on your favorite platform. Well no for me for the for the Olympics it's uh I was interested when the United States had growing up we had all amateurs every year we were the underdog yeah we were the massive underdogs because we had amateurs today everything's professional yeah and like hockey aren't you going to watch a hockey no hockey you just all these people they're not playing together it's not like this isn't like the US Olympic hockey team of 1980 that started practicing in August of that year and played games August November December January into February they played what 40 they played like 50 games they were a team this is an all-star game. They they did a documentary on Netflix miracle the boys of 80. Yeah I heard it's pretty good. I haven't watched it yet but it's definitely in my view I'd like to watch that. I watched the HBO with the 25th anniversary one which uh which was uh which was really good. Yeah I I still though because they've been interviewing them again they've been interviewed and it's like there was such a depression there was and I always laugh at that because it goes back to uh you know Jimmy Carter's Malay speech and everything else and hugged a press viewers a nation and I remember my mindset at that time and I was working as a machinist and a club DJ and the world was endless possibilities for me at that time. Yeah and I always find that interesting how the media looks back and was the economy down was inflation bad yes was that my mindset I knew all those things were happening was that my mindset it's like no I'm working two jobs there's a ton of things I was done with college and working two jobs now still wanted to go into radio someday but I was productive and having fun and so uh but still we were amateurs playing against professionals that's why they viewed it as the greatest sporting event of the 20th century. Yeah yeah so that got my you know that got my that caught my interest I can still remember uh the in in 70 uh 72 yeah when when the the the Russians uh uh cheated to beat the Americans in basketball or the refs cheated should I say to give them that gain and there it was cheating it actually was right and I remember how excited I was when the US played in that series against the Russians the next year and I believe it was in April of mapril or may of that year when the United States beat the Russians and Ernie D. Gregorio in the last like minute ran circles behind his back running around all over the place for like 30 seconds I mean the Russians were chasing him all I mean they look like they look like they were a high school team and then Ernie D. Gregorio goes and goes to the basket flips the ball to Marvin Barnes who dunks it and the place goes bonkers because we be it was like okay this is a revenge yeah you know at that point and I was into that I mean that was it was great but it was just it was a it was just it was a different time and there was there was this interest because of we were the amateurs and the communists were cheating they were playing professionals yeah and we all knew it right right and so even I think probably 84 was the last time where I was really excited about the Olympics and I remember and that's a different type of underdog dynamic you know what I mean yeah it's like look you know this isn't fair and you know the story of the the miracle story it's just insanely great yeah because of that it was it was underdog times a million right it's like all right they'll do their best though and then it happens I mean which you know hence the name miracle that I mean that was of course the the words set at the time but really it was a miracle yeah and and then you go back and you see it and I don't know the movie the I don't know how many documentaries the latest one on Netflix but it it just puts on display the the the underdog of underdog stories oh yeah it mean and the the movie with Kurt Russell oh my gosh I mean that's just good yeah I mean that was just yeah and he had but you look at it I mean you look at the you look at the 20th century and that was considered the greatest sporting event and you look at it and I believe that was the greatest team sporting event of the 20th century and greatest probably single one and again this is up for debate because nobody watched it on TV what was it 19 14 13 12 can't remember when Francis we may we we may won the US Open in golf against Harry Vardin I mean that was just huge because he was just basically he was a club pro right when you look at that and it was just like you know they view that as one of the greatest ones ever and that goes way way way way way way way way back but you know but I just I'm not as I've gotten older sports has really I still like watching hockey but I don't watch as much as I used to watch I'm I may watch you know once every I may watch a a game a month and NFL football last year trying to think that I watch one or two games I just can't you know and part of that is I can't watch the bills anymore because I can't go to sleep right you know so I can watch it if I'm not working but even if it's a 12 o'clock game I still get you know there's still that hometown nervousness and I just so not that I don't care about my home teams but sports in general I just have a lot less interest than I than I used to have right I don't watch you know I don't can't remember the last time I watched an NBA game I can't remember the last time I watched an NFL game outside of my home team. Can't remember think of the last time I watched a hockey game you know outside of you know my home team I just have no interest I my interest has just gone way way down really over the last 20 years or so now the whole thing in 2020 didn't help with the NFL the politicalization of it which I know the NFL Commissioner Goudelle wants he wants to politicize it yeah in you know in some way he realizes he has his limitations but that has made me lose interest but it's really interesting with the Super Bowl weekend somebody and this is why I brought it up because somebody asked me yesterday you excited about the Super Bowl and the Olympics I went no yeah I just I don't care yeah you know it's just yeah and it's just I have other interest and other things that I'll be doing and it's just it's that simple so you know I want the USA to win yeah I do yeah but am I gonna spend a lot of time watching it no if I'm flipping by and something's on I mean well and it's here's here's the thing with me however but I it's it's hard to know I have great respect for any athlete that can get to that level but um then there is the question okay who's gonna make it political and make it their time to uh to to I don't know stand up for their cause instead of making it about the games and you don't know until you go in until it happens but I think this is the case and this I don't think I'm alone on this you invest your time right you set your time aside to watch whatever portion of it you're gonna watch and then you watch it and then all of a sudden you know that person as they're I don't know getting their medal or or whatever you know makes their statement next thing you know it's like well you know I come from a time when we had great pride in this country and there's this growing sense of the opposite from the left and that activism quite unfortunately has certainly worked its way into uh professional sports even though I think a lot of that has has turned around uh at least to some degree but then those Olympic athletes you know occasionally you come across one that's you know gonna make a statement and you never know when it's gonna happen and the time investment for me if I'm going to watch something like the Olympics is about cheering on my country and I just don't want that kind of slap in the face that's great point you know and I and you don't know when it's where it's gonna come from it's nothing applies to all you know many of those athletes go out there because they poured their entire life into this and I think the other reason that what I will watch is when I know it's gonna be a guaranteed victory which is why I like watching uh the swimming in the summer Olympics yeah oh there was interesting article about how tough it is for so many of these Olympic athletes yeah they went through really some of the most famous athletes who are basically destitute now yeah yeah because they spend so much time doing this and if they they stay until their 30s or whatever yeah still competing yeah that they get out they can't find a job doing anything and the endorsement money dries up very quickly and companies won't hire them right because they have no experience in their 30s right you're gonna do for me right I went wow that's really and they talk about things like wrestling even swimming in some of the swimmers well that the endorsements dry up within a year they're gone they move on to the next superstar a friend of mine is friends with Michael Phelps father and Phelps got one of those training pools that has a current it it's just a long pool and you swim in it because the current just keeps going it flows water so he goes over there my friend goes over there to his dad's because he got his dad one the Michael got his dad one and he's sitting at the end of it and he's throwing a ball to the end of it and watching the ball come back he's not even swimming he's just sitting in the water and he's just throwing the ball to the end of the pool what are you doing he goes I just came up with a fun game we are ready radio brought to you by fppf fuel power max managing time is key successful owner operators know that simply running hard is not enough if we're that easy anyone could do the job and expect the profits to roll in it generally pays to slow down there is a trade-off in higher costs not to mention the increased risk for driving fast if driving slower takes time away from you you could find some of the ways to get it back never take time off during the last two weeks of the quarter or the last week of the month when fray typically is abundant sometimes it works to your advantage to look for loads that take you through home rather than to home the latter can interrupt your revenue stream and require additional time to get back up to full speed again owner operator business 101 is provided by overdrives partners and business program go to overdriveonline.com to the partners and business section of coming up more with Gary McNamara and Eric Harley it's Red Eye Radio we are running radio he is Eric Hony and I'm Gary McNamara welcome and good morning coming up on the bottom of the hour two things that happened last week two things that were said and I really think it was important one was a jenny perro talking about the second amendment yeah and which was it was it the the denolos you said for god for god's sakes Republicans stop talking about the second amendment stop taking off your base but but we'll get to that and what but something that was that was said concerning the the the the second amendment versus what the president said about nationalizing elections so I think there's two really big constitutional points to bring up there which I think are we're discussing and so we're doing that coming up yeah following the bottom of the hour all right there it is new new study yeah nearly 40% of cancers can be prevented with three lifestyle changes new study fines okay unfortunately it's what people like to do 40% of global cancer cases linked to tobacco and alcohol 15% of new cases linked to tobacco alcohol consumption 3% infections 10% there you go yeah it surprises me that people still smoke cigarettes you know to mace me I went back and and I don't know because probably because of a youtube video and all these people that died like all these Hollywood people that died and they were in their you know can't believe how young they died yeah in their 50s and 60s yeah and I think about I'm like wow so I started examining how many of these people smoked and you find out these people were smoking three to three to four packs of cigarettes a day yeah it's it's a large amount yeah 60 to 80 cigarettes yeah yeah that's like you're some of these people are smoking six seven cigarettes an hour yeah yeah they were not now no longer here but yeah wow wow tell your friends we're here in my tree Eric Arley and Gary McNamara on Red Eye Radio we are ready radio he's here currently and I'm Gary McNamara welcome and good morning thanks so much for being here this morning download our Red Eye Radio app and you can listen when and where you choose all right constitutional issues here this is something that I thought about it said when you know I was you know I don't know doing nothing staring sitting on the couch staring like putty on Seinfeld yeah and and I five I still love that eight ball jacket remember when you wore the eight ball jacket I was one of my favorites I don't know why but that still I find that one of the funniest things why because I don't know what it means I know but apparently he did yeah but it was the two things this week when Jeanine Perro talked about you know the second amendment don't bring a gun yeah for example into Washington DC because even if it's registered somewhere else it's not here and we'll bust you for right and you had gun rights organizations come out and you had some of a couple of members of Republicans in Congress say wait a minute I've got you have to get and apparently they did they got the permit to have an NDC you don't have reciprocity there in in NDC with any other state but they they said we have were registered outside but we also have it there I understood what her point was her point was you know it's not legal here but the problem with that was you've got a lot of people myself included that when it comes to gun rights which are in the second amendment what has not been established is which it should be because it's a federal right it's like if you if you attempt to degrade freedom of speech from what it is in the federal level from the first amendment in a state you'll be knocked down by that by the feds because there's a certain level of freedom of speech all across the United States and that's what the gun groups they don't want her promoting what they believe is unconstitutional which is every state well states can regulate however they want or to the point where for example we have constitutional in in the state of Texas we have constitutional carry yes which means anybody can carry a handgun if you pass the federal test right yeah you pass the pass the federal what is it the on the background the background check yes yeah you can you can carry in the state of Texas you can conceal carry right there's a next level which you can get which is the license to carry which gives you more special privileges there right there's actually a card for that interesting thing you and I were talking about it that and and did some research on it that if you have and this goes back to the whole you know stuff in you know the Minneapolis and that's why Jenning Peril said it off the guns right and and and and things that that if you have if you go and get the license to carry in the state of Texas which is of course you got to take like eight hours and then you actually have to have a certain level of of performance in target shooting right they want to make sure if you get that level that you can actually shoot and hit what you're you know what what's your pointing uh at if you have that level if you go and pay for that course and take the eight hours and show it it's required that you must tell police that if you get pulled over you got to bring your card out if you're carrying you need to tell them you're carrying and pull the card out but if you don't have the license to carry right you technically don't I always would I think it's good practice yeah I I always would anyway if somebody if I got pulled over yeah I don't want that officer to have any surprises whatsoever yeah irrespective of whether I have the license to carry or not I right you know I would but it's the it's the thing that if there's a right how come you can have constitutional carry in 27 states and then the other one if you're carrying a bullet casing with no bullet in you can go to jail for that right to me if it's a federal right under the bill of rights there should be a standard across the nation and I agree with that now the second point I want to bring up as when the president was talking about nationalizing elections and I know the frustration that Republicans have you're not going to nationalize elections one thing that the president said was and you and I discussed this off the air where he said that states are basically the agent of the federal government in elections it I think he misspoke I think I know what he was trying to say I can't tell you for sure I know but I think there's a great possibility what he was trying to say is states run those federal elections within their states and he called them agents of the federal government basically which isn't wholly accurate you there has to be an explainer there and and you tell people states run their own elections but that includes the federal elections and that process within their state well the the states really are not an agent of the federal government is the reverse yes the federal government is actually an agent of the states the federal government all the federal government's power comes from where states the states the states have approved everything in the constitution which is our overall umbrella law is passed by the states right I understand what he meant and I do believe the federal government does have absolute authority which again you can look at comes from the states that if states have fraud that the government knows about whether elections or in money being spent the federal law enforcement can go in and investigate that right as they're doing right which you can use you can I'm not going to get in right now because just because of time but you can look at Georgia and say the FBI going in to look at what happened there right yes and that I have no problem but it's where the authority of the federal government comes from which all conservatives should understand comes through the constitution which the constitution only came from the states yeah right the states approved it even the original constitution drafted by the continental congress the approval came from the states the states are the ones that gave that power yeah right yep and so those are the two interesting things but yeah when it came to the genuine peril I know what you saying but it got second amendment groups upset because there is this whole point that wait a minute if it's a bill over if there's a federal right you know for example um the supreme court has said for example dui roadblocks are constant our constitution you can do that but there are states that say not in our state right so you can give more of that right of what the minimum standard is but you can't give less of that right from what the federal standard is right and so that's why you know what is what is the federal standard on the second amendment we know that the federal standard allows constitutional carry yes and that's why there's that push for national reciprocity right because this is a federal right yep and so just one of the state lines don't matter if it's a federal right a federal right if it's a federal right exactly right yeah you should be able to cross state lines and there should be reciprocity it wouldn't actually be reciprocity as long as you're in the US it wouldn't you know at that point that's a great point it's not reciprocity right I'm in the US it doesn't matter where in the US I am with the exception of again private property those types of things and and we've had that discussion before on property rights versus you know being able to carry and limitations on where you can carry based on that but well I think that is this minimum standard that that if you wish somebody not to have a firearm on your property that rights who proceeds your second amendment right on my property right that that I would view as a minimum standard that already exists exactly yeah because I don't know any state I don't know anywhere where you're allowed if somebody says don't bring your gun under my private property well I can keep you off my private property so certainly I can keep your gun off my private property yeah yeah yeah yep now commercial is different yeah commercial property yeah commercial property is is different they're a person you know well you're allowed to go on as long as you're not discriminated against by what the federal statute say yeah right based on commerce right yeah right yeah and then protected classes federal right federally speaking right yeah but yeah I just thought those are two interesting things to to bring up I know with the president I think I know what the president was attempting to say yes and I think he clearly he understand you know this has been part of the frustration is that you know you kind of have to when you'll see the headlines are for me it's the notifications one my notifications go crazy it's like Trump says and I'm like well here we go sorry everybody I'm gonna have to go do some show prep but no you you or yesterday I might say it different if I met a prayer breakfast just the word just it is a prayer breakfast yes my I'm sorry but my Catholicism instinct automatically would hit yeah I'm not on the radio yeah yeah yeah it's not the first time over the years with various presidents oh I know the prayer breakfast I know we got that didn't no that doesn't work but but it's if you look you you kind of have to back away from what what he has said and then you you have to kind of tear it down because he doesn't always get into the explainer part of it right he doesn't always do he's not doing long form he's constantly communicating in the media and because of the rate of communication that's a sad point you know because of the rate of communication there are going to be a lot of things that that don't have the proper phrasing I'm guilty of it and I do it professionally or unprofessionally as the production staff would say I you know I do and I try and be as thoughtful as we can and and and people do it Trump is trying to get a message across because again his rate of communication with the media with people whether it's a post on social media or an interview or just getting on marine one in front of the media whatever it is there's you're going to see a number of times when he says something it's you got it back away and go no this is I think this is what he was actually trying to say well like yesterday for example language doesn't matter yeah I was telling you about the sheriff yesterday when he said we believe that you know Nancy Guthrie is still out there right what does that mean are you saying she's alive right and the networks took that as being alive I go he didn't say alive he said out there he said out there and I'm like you got to clarify that right and if you do mean alive then what's the basis for that is that just a hunch or right but it was it was the time that he used to which to me was ambiguous in this entire story and it's a very sad story but it's there's been so much so much so much language that just hasn't been clear and and I think they do have to clarify I think they're you know I know it's hard for law enforcement officials they have their hands full but yeah the language does matter and there's a lot of questions that come you know from naturally a case like this we are right I radio we'll be right back with more red eye radio with Eric Hurley and Gary McNamara we are running radio he's Eric Hurley and I'm Gary McNamara one more thing that got my got my attention yesterday was a challenger Gray and and Christmas the the private sector analysts of jobs out there US employers announced a hundred and eight thousand layoffs for the month up 118% from the same period a year ago and 205% from December at the same time companies announced just 5,000 new hires the lowest since January of 2009 job openings fell more than 900,000 since October they're now at the lowest level since September of 2020 yeah January 2009 would be the great recession remember wow this is red eye radio on westwood one the Dan Vonjino show damn I missed you all I've got so much content bottled up my head I got a lot of stuff this is the kind of stuff it's real may not view this anywhere else hard truths there's a lot of stuff to talk about that anything is going to open a lot of eyes and a lot of ignorant asses are going to get shut down and a bold perspective no one else can offer you are freaking out it's the comeback everyone's been waiting for lovers haters friends supporters detractors you're all welcome I want to hear it all the Dan Vonjino show follow and listen on your favorite platform you there
