Hello, Jeffrey here, and welcome back tonight, Falls. I've got a quick favor to ask. If you're enjoying our show, please do share it with friends and family. It helps us more than you know, and hopefully we can help them too. We're very lucky in Scotland. You can stomp through the woods, climb the mountains, cross the barns, and most dangerous thing you'll encounter is a crazy dog, Otto. That said, it does come with its downsides. I remembered the joy of hanging out with monkeys in India, the honour of seeing orangutans in Bukit-Lawang jungle in Indonesia, and encountering a solitary black bear in Canada. We both stopped to look at each other. I was in utter awe. He couldn't have cared less. In tonight's story, we meet a little bear who lives high in the mountains, quietly responsible for a very important job, raising the sun each day. But when bear sleeps in for the very first time, his forest friends come together to make sure the sun still rises, and to remind him that even those who care for others deserve a little rest too. Before we begin, here's the quick outbreak that keeps this free content possible. To go atri, subscribe via the link in the show notes. For a lot of us, making time to take care of our mental health isn't always straightforward. For me, therapy has been part of that. And one thing I've learned is that even after you decide to ask for help, finding care that's affordable and fits into your life can still be difficult. It can sometimes feel like choosing between getting the right support and being able to afford it, which shouldn't be how mental health care works. That's one of the reasons RULA exists. Alright, now back to night falls. A small bear lived up high in the mountains, surrounded by a vast forest. The bear was not in any way remarkable to look at. He had coppery brown fur all over, big, green eyes and soft little ears that twitched when it was cold outside or when he was thinking of someone especially nice. If you met bear and he greeted you with a bright, hello, you'd think he was an ordinary bear, but he was not ordinary at all because he had a very special job. Bear lived in a little wooden house and his days were much the same. He didn't need an alarm, he woke up at the same time every morning and looked out his window, enjoying the quiet. Each morning bear rose and quickly left his house. Just outside, along a small path, there was a tower with a special pulley. Bear had built this pulley himself many, many years ago. He'd made the pulley during one long summer using wood from the forest surrounding his house. With this pulley, he completed his daily tasks. When bear got up, it was dark outside. He had to go carefully because all you could see were the outlines of trees and the stars glinting away. Each morning he went straight away to his pulley. Then he took a deep breath. He savored the darkness because he loved that final moment just before his work began. Bear started, he pulled once, twice, three times. He pulled up the sun which rose above the mountain, giving light to the town below. He pulled and pulled. The sun snuck up very slowly until he felt the warmth come in through the tower's windows. Good morning, mouse. He sat under his breath as he reached the end of his job. Good morning, pig. Good morning, badger. Good morning, rabbit. He looked down and thought of all his animal friends who lived in the town and he smiled as he could just about make out all their houses dotted along the river in the forest. He imagined them rising slowly, sleepily because the sun was up. Every single day he let out a satisfied sigh as he finally managed to pull the sun into place. Then he tied the pulley off, yon with an immense sense of satisfaction and felt a rather pleasant fatigue run through his body. He often returned to his house to sit on his big, cozy armchair with a steaming cup of tea. He liked to enjoy the sunshine flooding into the windows of his home. One thing about bear was that he was extremely punctual. He wore a large red watch and on the dot of 9am he would leave his house and wander down into the town, picking flowers as he went. He always went to see if any other animals needed his help that day. He said a hearty hello to all of the other animals in the little forest town when he passed their doors. They all called back, Hello bear. Bear would often stop by pig's house and give her a special jar of strawberry jam, his secret recipe. He made lots of jars every year and he knew all the animals in the forest were partial to a little strawberry jam. Most days he stopped at rabbit's house because the rabbit was quite crafty and though he was often building something or other out of wood, he tended to get a bit stuck and bear always liked to give a helping hand where he could. Sometimes he would go and see mouse. There he would drop off some flowers and perhaps stay for a nice cup of tea because mouse was very good at making cups of tea. He made it with lots of milk and a dash of cinnamon. Bear would always go and see Badger last, his oldest friend and they would sit by the river and put the world to rights over a final cup of tea. Often he would take Badger's post and drop it off at the post office. Then Bear would walk all the way back up the mountain. Bear didn't have time to rest because there was much more to do. Sometimes he'd bake a batch of honey glazed pastries for the village. He'd oil his pulley every few days so it was lovely and smooth to use. On occasion he'd write letters to all of the other animals he knew around the world, sharing stories and delicious recipes. And if the weather was nice he'd go outside with his battered old easel to do some paintings off the forest. His final task of the day was always the same and just like in the morning he didn't need an alarm clock because he got a little tingling feeling just at the edge of all his paws. Then he knew it was time. Slowly he'd pull the sun down from the sky so everyone could end their day and get some sleep. As the sun came down he always felt his legs relaxed as it became easier and easier to gently lower the sun. When the job was complete and the sun was down he pulled his paws away from the pulley system and watched as the moon came up. There was another very special bear just across the valley whose job it was to pull up the moon. Thank you moon bear. He whispered with a nod as he saw the moon emerge big and pearly against the night sky. He looked out and though it was dark he could imagine the homes of his friends dotted around the forest with curtains drawn and he was thankful that he was high up so he could look out over them just to keep an eye on things and make sure they were all right. Good night mobs. He said under his breath, good night rabbit, good night badger, good night pig. Then all jobs were done and bear would be lovely and sleepy. He would climb into his comfortable bed with the big thick patchwork quilt on top and he would snuggle in pulling the quilt up so only the tops of his ears were visible. He always went to sleep knowing he'd wake up at the same time the next morning excited to get to work and raise the sun. Bear's days followed the same pattern but things were a little different one day. It was a night like any other at first but perhaps there was something in the air. It was the perfect temperature not too hot and not too cold. A very slight breeze was floating in through the open window with the salty smell of the sea even though the ocean was very far away. Bear had had a busy day as usual and that was just as he liked it but perhaps he'd done a bit too much. The heaviness in his legs was just a little more than normal and his eyelids were very heavy. That day he was just so terribly cozy with the light warm breeze running over his far. The darkness in the room soothed him and he sighed and curled up into a ball pulling the quilt up over his ears and falling into a deeper and deeper sleep. All the other animals were sleeping ever so soundly too down in the town. Pig was snoring gently, most lay on his front hardly staring and Badger was having the most enjoyable series of dreams. But then Badger woke. There she is odd. He thought it was still dark outside. He peered outside to see if there was something going on. He rose from his bed and went into his living room to look at the old grandfather clock. Badger couldn't believe the time. It was nearly 11am. What on earth was going on? He went outside and walked along the main street of the town. He decided to go wake up moose, rabbit and pig. When they were all gathered in the center of the town, Badger said, it looks like something's gone a bit wrong. We need to go and see why Bear hasn't made the sun rise. All the other animals agreed and in the darkness all the different animals plotted up the mountain to Bear's house. They didn't go up to Bear's house often because Bear always came down to see them and land a hand. Seeing Bear's little cottage with its big green door knocker was exciting. Badger's house looks so nice. Exclaimed moose with a happy squeak as they waited for him to come to the door. Oh Bear, are you in? Badger called through the letterbox. They peeked in through the window and they could see he was asleep, looking ever so peaceful in his bed. Ah Bear seemed content. He smiled slightly like he was having the lovely stream. This was true. He actually was having a brilliant dream about making the biggest scorn in the world and serving it up to the village alongside his homemade strawberry jam. He's still sleeping. My wife's smart old. He looks very tired. Said Pig. Yes, he does. A great Badger. You know what? I think it might be best if we leave Bear. He looks like he's having a lovely long sleep. On the other animals looked closely at Bear and they all agreed. Bear's ears twitched, showing he was dreaming. What about the shun though? Asked Rabbit a little nervous. He looked outside and all the other animals gazed out over the forest too. They all thought of Moon Bear who must be waiting on the other side of the valley. He'd already brought the Moon down so he would be wondering what an arthead happened. Why haven't the sun risen that day? Well, said Badger. Bear makes the sun rise for us every day. Then he comes and helps us with all sorts of things, doesn't he? Oh yes. Said Maith. He always helps me with my garden. He always brings round flowers for me to put in my kitchen. And all the other animals joined in, reeling off the many, many things Bear helped them with. They didn't even ask. Bear was always there with a helping hand and a kindly piece of advice before he plotted back up to his house to bring the sundown. Show, we should let Bear sleep, said Badger. And we will make the sun come up. It's the least we can do for our friend. The other animals looked worried because although Bear brought the sun up every day, they thought it could be a little tricky. How were they supposed to know what to do? What do you all think? Asked Badger. They were quiet. Badger shook his head and then looked at his friend sternly. Come on now, he said. We need to help out Bear. You really want to wake him up? Bear had rolled over onto his side and he let out a happy, sleepy sigh. I The other animals shook their heads. Oh, of course not. Said Pig. We need to help Bear. He's clearly very tired and he's having such a good sleep. Let's do it. Pig clapped her trotters together. She was always quite jolly. Her enthusiasm was infectious and the other animals nodded too. They all agreed that they would do Bear's job for him. After all, he put in the work every day and he certainly deserved a day off. All the animals went to the tower just by Bear's house and they climbed up the stairs right to the top where they could see Bear's police system. It looked a little complicated. The pulley was bolted to a thick oak beam and there were lots of knobs and levers. Of course Bear would know exactly how it worked but he'd always done it alone. We need to give it a go. Said Badger firmly. He loosened the brakes on the pulley system and used all his weight to pull. It was very heavy and he tried very hard but he just couldn't do it. Here said Pig and she stood to help. The pulley seemed to hum as Pig and Badger pulled together easing the weight as they tried to make the sunrise. Oh no luck! Said Pig sadly. Rabbit was behind them and he went to Pig and Badger pulling on Pig to help her. They used all their strength. Max watched and wonder but the sun did not seem to be rising. Goodness said Rabbit. Bear must be powerful to do this himself every day. He? Very strong. Agreed Badger but also very patient. Badger knew that Bear wasn't one to give up. He always got the job done. Rabbit turned to mouse and gestured for him to come over and help the rest of the animals. Mouse was unsure. He knew that he made a brilliant cup of tea but he didn't consider himself very strong at all. But he also knew that he needed to help his friends so he joined the line. Badger was first and then Pig next holding onto Badger and then Rabbit and finally mouse right at the end. Mouse used every ounce of strength in his body, summoned it from deep within. One Two, three! Counted Badger. And they all drew together for a big tug and they found the pulley beginning to work and saw the sun begin to rise up. End up, end up, higher and higher. A glow spread soft and amber over the forest below them. If they were awake the other animals would have been wondering where the sun was but now they would see that all was well. That thought pushed the group on. One, two, three! King did Badger again. Another huge tug. The pulley was working, easing the sun's weight to sit Rose higher and the light became brighter spreading out. Little Jammout said Rabbit quietly. We couldn't have done it without you. Keep on going! Sequently, Mouse was getting a little tired but he was heartened by Rabbit's encouragement. Nearly there. Mouse called to everyone and they kept going. It wasn't too long until the sun was high in the sky and Badger declared the job done. He tied off the pulley making sure the ropes were nice and secure. Oh, well done, everyone! He said. All the animals sat on the floor resting and feeling tired but very satisfied. All were thinking, few! Or a hard job bear does every day. But none of them said it out loud. Instead, they just lay there for a while and enjoyed the rays of the sun that came in through the window and warmed them. They all felt very relaxed. Rabbit wiggled little and then became still feeling like he could just about drift off. Mouse propped himself up against the wall with the warm stone against his back making all his muscles relax. His tail was curled around him. Finally, Badger rose and the rest of the animals followed him back to look in at Bear's window. Bear was having the most wonderful dream. All the animals were there. Everyone was enjoying his scones and jam and they were all done by the river, floating out on a series of boats chatting and swimming and making the most of the summer's day. In his dream he suddenly felt quite warm and he starred slightly feeling the sun on his face. Slowly he opened his eyes. He looked at all his animal friends standing at the window, peering in at him and smiling. He was shocked and then he realized that he had slapped in. How could this have happened? Bear had absolutely never slapped in before and he wasn't one to shark his responsibilities. He jumped out of bed and quickly threw his quilt to one side. But then as the sleep cleared from his mind he realized that the sun had come up. The day had started and everything was absolutely fine. All his friends came into his bedroom to see him. I'm terribly sorry. He said to the animals from his bed, not quite knowing what had happened. Don't worry Bear. Said nice. You must have been tired. He slept in but we went and used your pulley. We went and made the sun rise for you. Khorash said Bear. How on earth did you do that? Well it was quite hard work. Said Badger with a smile. You must be very strong Bear and your contraption looked slightly complicated at first but once we got the hang of it we was no problem at all. Wow. Said Bear and he felt embarrassed. You didn't need to do that. Goodness I just can't believe I slept in. We were happy to help. Piped up rabbit. You clearly needed the sleep. We having a nice dream. It was a rather nice dream. Bear admitted. Thank you. And he looked to his friends standing there at the end of his bed. He felt very happy to have them. A warm feeling of pride sat in his tummy. He gave them a huge smile. I'm very lucky to have friends like you getting me out of this pickle. No. No. We're lucky to have you Bear. Said Mouse firmly climbing up and resting his little gray hat on Bear's big brown shoulder. You're always helping us out. In fact you're always doing a million things a day. You deserve to rest. Everyone needs a rest. If you ever want us to come and help you make the sunrise we're always happy to do it. Now tell us about your dream. Bear laughed. No, I can do better than that. He said. Bear thanked his friends and sent them on their way. Then Bear got out all his ingredients and made the batter for a huge batch of scones. He cooked them until they were golden brown. And then he put them on the table to cool for a while. Coming to himself Bear got out the butter dish along with some knives. He had some clotted cream and he took that too. He packed it all up with care into his picnic basket. And then he added two big jars of his special strawberry jam and an extra small jar to give to Mouse in case he'd run out. Bear took his picnic basket and feeling very rested like he'd just had the best holiday. He wandered down into the town, taking the winding path through the trees. The birds chirped around him and the sun was high up in the sky. There wasn't a cloud to be seen and Bear was sure that it was going to be a lovely day. Bear went to Mouse's house first and picked him up. Then he went and got badger, then to rabbit and finally they all went to see Pig. Mouse brought a big thermos of his tea for everyone. Bear added his big red picnic blanket that smelled of lavender. Bear. Each animal went and gathered more animals from all over the town. All the different animals confided that they'd risen a little later that day. All of them agreed it'd be nice to have a little extra rest because there'd been something about the night before that had just made them feel like they didn't want to get up. And then they ambled down to the river, taking their time to listen to the birds sing and smell the flowers that grew by the water. They laid out the big red picnic blanket under a tree for shade and then they poured out the thermos of tea into all the different cups. Finally, Bear laid out the scones with his selection of toppings. Wow said rabbit. What a treat. All the animals dug in. Bear made a good scone and many of the animals asked if Bear would reveal the secret ingredient in his strawberry jam. But he said his lips were sealed. Then they all went into the river, splashing around just like in Bear's dream. Bear played with his friends and then he took a long leisurely swim on his back, letting himself float down the river so he could see the endless blue sky above him. And feel the warmth on his wet fur. He was almost weightless as the trees and glades passed around him to the side. And the slight waves in the river rose and fell. Rose and fell. Rose and fell. They thought what a lovely day to spend with friends. We'll leave our story there for tonight. I hope you enjoyed Sun Bear's adventure. Sleep well and sweet dreams. I hope you enjoyed the adventure.
