Insights

  • The ambiguity between supernatural interpretation and rational explanation reflects Victorian-era tensions between science and folklore
  • The younger generation's departure represents redemption and escape from the destructive cycle of the previous generation's passion
  • Brontë uses unreliable narration through Ellen to question the nature of truth and perception in storytelling

Hello, and welcome to this sleepy bookshelf, where we put down our worries from the day and pick up a good book. In our last episode we read the final pages of Wuthering Heights. In case you nodded off before we finished, this is a recap of the last episode. But be warned, if you haven't listened to the whole book and you don't want to know how it ends yet, stop this episode now. For the rest of you, I will continue. Ellen explained how after their conversation Heathcliff was changed. His appetite declined, and when he went to bed he chose Kathy's old room instead of his own. She heard him leave the house one night, and in the morning she bid Catherine and Herotin to eat their breakfast before he came down. Young Catherine wandered to the gate and returned astonished to have found Heathcliff on his way home, looking oddly euphoric after a night on the moors. He remained in this state for days, without consuming any food, and seeming to be staring at something that wasn't there. When he did speak to Ellen he told her that he was close to his heaven and felt blissful, despite looking demonic to Ellen's eyes. Finally one morning, Ellen noticed the window in his chamber open during a rainstorm, and went up to close up to find Heathcliff lying still on the bed, wet with rain, but with the same smile on his face. Dr Kenneth said that the starvation did not kill him but was a symptom of an illness he had, which was inconclusive. He was buried as per instructions to the sexton, next to Catherine, in the kirkyard, the sides of their coffins facing each other, having been removed. The local people still swear they see the couple, wandering the moors together, but Ellen was sure that wasn't true. Young Cathy and Herotin were due to be married and would remove to the Grange, leaving Joseph and a new hand to remain at the heights with most of the rooms locked up.
