One of the more powerful moments last night came when the President of the United States introduced a first grader who nearly lost her life at the hands of somebody who was driving an 18-wheeler and was not a legal citizen. Name is Delilah. Delilah got introduced last night by the President of the United States. She was sitting there with her father. And here is what the president was pushing for and what he is now dubbing Delilah's law. That's why tonight I'm calling on Congress to pass what we will call the Delilah law, barring any state from granting commercial driver's licenses to illegal aliens. so let me just ask you why someone would be against that even if you let's say are not a fan of the save america act which is about voter id and you know trying to tighten some of those restrictions about voter id around the country you might say well that's about voting and winning elections what's the case for being against a law like this with delilah's law where you have this first grader who god bless her as someone who's got kids delilah's age i'm looking at this little girl and i'm thinking to myself my goodness that could have been my kid delilah coleman a first grader who was severely injured in a car accident caused by an illegal alien driving a semi with a cdl her injuries include a traumatic brain injury cerebral palsy and she will need lifelong care and therapy the driver crossed the border in 22 was released into the country by the prior administration she and her father were at the state of the union last night who would be against the law like that why would you not want to see that law pass and that's something that came up last night after the state of the union sean duffy was on with jake tapper on cnn and they talked specifically about delilah's law jake tapper set it up by trying to make the president look highly divisive in this speech And Sean Duffy pumped the brakes on that real fast. Here he was last night on CNN, the transportation secretary, talking to Jake Tapper. Quote, these people are crazy. I'm telling you, they're crazy. I mean, but that's not something we ever heard from Obama or Biden from that stage. No, we never had a speaker rip up a speech either. But when you're saying issues like we're talking about trucking, we have, and this comes in my space, where you have states that are issuing driver's licenses to illegals. illegals who haven't been trained to drive a 80,000 pound truck on an American road. We have a little girl that has had her life impacted for the rest of her life, and she's five years old, and it was an illegal who hit her. I think the question becomes, why doesn't every Democrat stand up and go, no, we want well-qualified drivers on American roads? That's not partisan. We don't want illegals who can't speak the language, contrary to American law for decades, to not be on American roads. I think those are easy issues, Jake. and I don't think we saw Democrats stand up and support them. I mean, yeah, we got some applause for the U.S. Olympic hockey team, but that was probably one of the only bipartisan moments of the night, which I think is too bad. Again, if inflation's down, Democrats should applaud it. If real incomes are up, Democrats should applaud it. Those are good things that we should support as Americans, and just because Donald Trump's in office doesn't mean you have to sit on your hands. You should applaud that because that's good for America. That was Sean Duffy, Transportation Secretary with Jake Tapper last night after the State of the Union on CNN. And he's absolutely right. Absolutely right. Why would you be against that? Who would possibly be in favor of saying yes if you come to the country illegally? By the way, here's a CDL to drive an 80,000-pound commercial vehicle on America's highways. Don't you want those people to be the most vetted and trained and held to the highest standards in protecting our members and monitoring the public? I mean, we all do it. You're driving down 435 right now. You're driving down 35. do you want to make sure that the guy driving next to you in the big rig has the best training is held to high standards and is properly vetted and knows the country knows the language that's not too much to ask that's not racist you know the story it's fascinating because over the weekend i i mentioned the other day that we had a couple of our friends come up from oklahoma where we used to live in the northwest part of the state and the husband he owns a power line company and a few years back he dealt with this very issue his power line company was working on a highway in new mexico and they had a bunch of the interstate shut down and so you know naturally created a bit of a bottleneck and there was traffic on the interstate because they had a lane shut down to do power line work well what happened and this was a few years back an illegal was driving a big rig watching a movie on his ipad never saw the slowdown coming plowed into the vehicles and a bunch of people passed away and died and my buddy's power line company got sued they maxed out their policy they had no choice they were basically told by the attorneys and by the insurance company you just got to pay this thing out it's not worth fighting he's like wait i'm just the power line company yeah i had the road shutdown at the request of you know the state and we did nothing wrong and they said dude you got to just pay it out you're not going to win this can't fight it so he had to max out his policy because once again you had someone who should never have been behind that wheel watching a movie on an iPad never slowing down and plowing into a bunch of people on the internet or on the interstate and they end up losing their lives never got any attention that was the first I heard about it you know we had not talked in the last couple of years or really reconnected here um over the weekend and I was blown away and he's like dude it is terrible out there when you do that work for a living you see all that Kietzman's talked about it driving back and forth to Arizona on a regular basis seeing this stuff all the time on the interstate and I mean this is like as relatable to anything it's not necessarily about deep thoughtful policy it's just like hey do you want the people driving the big rigs on the roads on the interstates where all of us also drive to be vetted to be here legally and to be properly trained yes yes yes and that outside of when the president said last night please stand if you put American citizens ahead of those who are here illegally outside of that moment last night I thought that this was one of the more underrated moments from last night's speech that if Republicans are smart and they're not always the smartest either if they're smart they'll use that moment and they'll use that issue first and foremost to try to get good policy passed because it feels like a no-brainer to passed delilah's law i don't know how you could be against that and why you would want to be against that but then secondarily politically if you get pushback on this it's a very simple question why what what is there to be against on a story like this you look at that six-year-old delilah last night if you're watching that state of the union and i don't care how much you know you can't stay in the orange guy that's your prerogative but how are you going to be against her that could be our daughter that could be our grandchild that could be our niece and to look at what happened to her and not say you know what yeah it does make sense i want to make sure that anybody driving a big rig around this country is here legally and is properly vetted why you would be against that i can't understand how you cannot clap for that i i just i don't know what to make of it outside of we've now got the situation where you're either for the American citizen or you're all in with the idea of anybody who's in this country no matter what they've done no matter what their background is should have every right and the same rights as people who are here legally and boy that is a that is a far far far way down the road to go you know like if Democrats were thinking about how to actually play this and pursue this politically they would actually be on board with Trump on what he's trying to accomplish at its core when it comes to really bad people being here and trying to make sure that they are deported and then you would also say sure I'll give you a win on this CDL deal I'll do all those things but I think you're going too far for reasons a b and c they were smart that's how they play it and if they are reasonable that's how they play it but they're not playing it that way so what other conclusion can you come to outside of as jake tapper was trying to criticize sean duffy for last night you're crazy i you're you're you're nuts you're crazy quote these people are crazy i mean what what other conclusion are you supposed to come to when we can't get a round of applause across the political spectrum on making sure people who drive 80,000 pound vehicles that could injure or, God forbid, kill anybody on the roads right now in Kansas City or anywhere else in the country is vetted, is legal, can speak the language, can read the signs, and is properly trained. How? 913-408-7957. Here's more what the president had to say last night on this proposed Delilah's law. that would make sure that people who are driving big rigs have the proper vetting training and legal background I hosted a ceremony with Americans who lost their treasured loved ones to the scourge of illegal immigration People came into our country, how we allowed this to happen with our open borders. These are the angel moms and families that for decades our government betrayed and our media totally ignored. Totally. It was terrible. Hard to believe, actually. It is hard to believe. It's absolutely hard to believe that the conversation even has to be had. And at a time when it's hard to find unity outside of Team USA going out there and going rah-rah and holding up their gold medals. And by the way, I did predict that Democrats would stand up for that last night. They did. I think it was the only thing they stood for, but they did. They couldn't find a couple other things to at least politely clap for. And that is just absolutely shocking to me. 913-408-7957. Steve's in KCK. He's a truck driver. What's up, Steve? Good morning, Pete. Truck drivers aren't just a bunch of racists out here that don't want foreigners driving our trucks. There's a thing that I'd like to call, just like you speak a language you and I are talking right now, there's a driving language that we learn as children watching our parents drive, coming to a complete stop at a stoplight, burning the rules. I couldn't go to India and drive in that organized chaos that they drive in over there. I couldn't come into a roundabout and follow their rules or lack of. There's a driving language. And also these foreigners, they're not playing by the rules. They'll have one truck, two drivers, and run it under four different businesses. This allows them to play with their e-logs and stay on the road and make money and send money back home. It's not fair because we're playing by the rules, and they're not. I'm glad you're finally approaching this subject because there is no such thing as a driver shortage. There's just a shortage of drivers that don't want to work for what foreigners are making. So you're saying these companies are also hiring these guys at cheaper rates? Yes. They're charging like $1.25 a mile, Pete. And these guys live in their truck for six months. They send money back home. And then when they've made enough money, they'll go back home, take a little break. And they'll rotate that truck out. What's the going rate? A good rate of $2.50 a mile. You know, that's what truckers used to make, $2.50. If you got $3 a mile, you were doing real good. That's what an American truck driver owner-operator needs to make to cover his cost, his fuel, his insurance, his federal regulations, and play by the rules. I think you had a story just a few weeks ago about a couple of illegal aliens stealing 400 gallons of gas. Yeah. Gallons of fuel. Can you hold these companies accountable in a better way too, Steve, do you think? I think they could. I think they really could. We need just a few limit of American companies on e-logs. You shouldn't be able to control e-logs in a foreign country. You know, you've got, there's a lot of these businesses that's, it's one address, six businesses under one address, and it's some apartment building in Minnesota. Yeah. You know, and they're able to adjust their logs in a foreign country. You know, they're set up in India. They're set up in Ukraine. that's where they've they've uh incorporated their businesses so they can adjust their e-logs outside of the country and and keep their drivers on the road 24 hours a day where an american truck driver he has to take a 10-hour break yeah yeah so they're undercutting it they're driving on the roads when they shouldn't they're tired they're putting people at risk i mean that's just thank you steve i that's a great call um can i say one more thing yeah sure real real truck drivers don't wear flip-flops thank you p oh man i i can't imagine i love flip-flops you know sometimes i'll take the girls out we'll you know run an errand we'll do a drive-through we'll do a hy-vee pickup order and i say just get in the car you don't need your shoes on and they'll say but you're putting your shoes on i'm like yes because i have to drive the car i can't drive the car without shoes i mean i can't do it barefoot i mean i could but it's not safe to do and they're like oh okay but i love a good pair of flip-flops but i agree not the safest way to drive wouldn't be doing that real truck drivers don't drive in flip-flops uh geez you're gonna give me more reason to be watching every side of me now when i'm out there on the roads that's just i don't need any part of that that needs to be part of the law no flip-flops yeah i put that in delilah's law would you please 913-408-7957 we'll get to uh you calls texts and much more as we roll through a post state of the union wednesday morning here on kcmo we also have an update from alathe northwest that we need to get to right here on 95 7 fm so this uh truck driver story a lot of you chomping in on the text line on the studio line at 913-408-7957 pete thanks for bringing the truck drivers on to speak truck drivers the backbone of america bringing goods everywhere that they need to go yeah and you know what just as important as that is the rest of us are on the roads with you and we deserve to be safe by making sure those of you on the roads are being held to high standards and when a six-year-old girl is introduced yesterday at the state of the union who was severely injured in a car accident caused by an illegal driving a semi with a cdl and she's now got traumatic brain injury and she needs a lifetime of care and therapy i i don't know how that's not something that regardless of what party you identify with you look at and you say boy we got we don't want that to happen how do we make sure that doesn't happen how do we actually do the work of Congress, do the work of the people to make sure we're preventing that from happening. It seems like anyone who's got a heart would come to that conclusion. But we're not there right now. Really, it's sad to me as much as anything else. Sarah's in Independence. Hi, Sarah. You're on KCMO. Good morning. Hey, good morning. I had seen on Highway Patrol, I'm not sure which states, but they have started confiscating their trailers, towing their trucks, if they can't pass the English test or their logs aren't right, whatever. You work in the industry? Do you work in the business, Sarah? I deliver diesel parts to truck drivers. So I meet them on the road too. Okay. So are you starting to see more of a crackdown then is what you're saying? I hope so. I've seen it in some states. I'm not sure if it's in Missouri or Kansas, but I know it's been controlled by the highway patrol. And they're pulling them over like at the scale houses and stuff. And they're towing their trucks and they're making the companies come pick up the trailers. They're confiscating the trailers and everything in them. Well, you know what? I hope that the crackdown is happening, Sarah. Thanks for the good work. We appreciate it. All right. Thanks, guys. Thanks so much. Let's go to Judy on KCMO. Go ahead, Judy. Got a minute. It is yours. Yeah, I used to be a driver trainer and the manual when the when we went from chauffeur's license to driver to a CDL, the manual said you must be able to read, write, understand and speak English reasonably well. And the truck drivers that and that I worked with thought, oh, great. You know, we're going to get some standards here. It didn't take us long to figure out that the only thing that the CDL was going to do was create a way for the states to end up with the ability to charge truck drivers more for licensing. And it looked good. It was really good window dressing and everything, but it didn't really do that much for safety, as they said it was going to be. and it just cost us more time off the road to study the manual. I mean, everything in the manual we already knew. It just took us more time to take more testing and it cost us more for testing. But, you know... Thank you, Judy. I'm sorry. I'm up against it. I got to run, but your point is well taken. And, you know, that's too bad. I mean, it's really just too bad that these barriers that were maybe intended to do the right thing actually backfired and just sounds to me like it's created more of a headache, more bureaucracy, and has not made things any safer, to your point. So I appreciate that. Hi, I'm Joe Salci. I host of the Stacking Benjamins podcast. Every week we talk personal finance trends.
