The Hockey Show discusses Gavin McKenna's felony assault charges following a street fight that could derail his NHL draft prospects, analyzes major Olympic hockey tournament implications for Team USA vs. Canada, and covers significant mid-season NHL trades including Artemy Panarin's move to the LA Kings and the Panthers' injury crisis.
Insights
- Top draft prospects facing criminal charges before the draft is unprecedented in modern NHL history, creating unpredictable draft positioning and raising questions about player development infrastructure
- Panarin's trade prioritized personal/family lifestyle factors (Los Angeles location) over competitive window, suggesting elite players increasingly value quality of life over championship contention
- Team USA's Olympic roster is built for defensive/grit-based play rather than offensive dominance despite having deeper talent pool than ever, potentially limiting ceiling against experienced Canadian roster
- Edmonton's goaltending struggles appear systemic rather than individual, with defensive structure issues mirroring Florida Panthers' problems despite different personnel
- Stadium Series entertainment value (goalie fights, comebacks, penalties) raises questions about competitive integrity and whether league is optimizing for television spectacle

You can check us out on YouTube at The Hockey Show DLS on TikTok. At The Hockey Show 7 and on X Instagram and threads at Hockey Show DLS. We're going to talk about Stadium Series and the Artimie Panera Intrait with Greg Brzezinski of ESPN. He's the senior NHL writer over there. But first we're going to talk about the big news that came out of college hockey. McKenna. Thank you. You got it. You got it. Can't afford to panther Gavin McKenna. Let's be very clear. We'll get to that as well. Gavin McKenna has been charged with felony assaults as well as several other charges after getting into a fight. With a guy that he and a group of people that McKenna was a part of, got into a verbal spat. Apparently McKenna punched the guy in the face twice, broke his jaw, knocked out a tooth as well. Some blood splattered all over the sidewalk. It was a mess. It was said on the police report. Right side of his face. Twice. So that jaw is broken. First degree felony aggregated assault in Pennsylvania is a maximum of 20 years and or $25,000 in a fine. This is a career altering situation for a guy that might go number one in the draft this year. He's also in the first year at Penn State after playing three years in Junior. So this could go in any direction, David. What do you think? You said you got hit in the left, the right side of his face twice. Gavin McKenna is a lefty, so I guess that kind of makes sense. I've been thinking about it since this came out. Have we ever seen a top draft prospect? I can't even talk. A prospect? Have we ever seen a top draft prospect? Acrobate it? Will get arrested or have anything like this in the months leading up to the draft? I feel like this is very unprecedented. There was that hockey Canada 5 thing. Yeah, but they had already been drafted. They had already been drafted. Carter Hart was already in the lead. I don't know. This is like going back to draft day when Aryan Foster's character got in a fight when he was the FSU running back. Do we take him in the first round? I don't know. That was the only comparable that I could think of and that's fiction. Dolman's had a draft picked at a head up. Was he going to say let him get a council? Yeah, let him get a council. But he didn't get arrested. He took a pick in a face-bond mask thing. That was the most badass thing of all time. That's awesome. Yeah, it was badass. I wanted to hang out with him after seeing that. I wanted to draft him twice. Of course you did. There are some details that have been reported that we should add in, which is that apparently the victim in this case was verbally assaulting or verbally abusing Gavin McKenna's mom. Oh no! No, you should not. Allegedly. This is unconfirmed. Yeah, allegedly. This was a photograph of a text message that got tweeted out. Well, there was also some more reporting from other people on scene, not just the text message. But basically the point being that there's two sides to every story. But even still though, like I'm sorry, if you're a potential number one draft pick, you're going to get heckled. You're going to get razed. People are going to chirp you up. Yeah, but don't go after my mom, dude. I don't care. Don't go after my mom. Don't go after my future. Don't call my mom names. Don't call my mom a very terrible thing to call your mom. Be a bigger man, dude. It's some schmuck stranger. Like who gives a shit? It's just some rando that you're never going to see again. He's jeopardizing his whole future. Kids like 17 years old. I don't care. And somebody's verbally assaulting your mother. He was with his whole team. He was with a group of people. Okay, if he's a hothead and his people know that, get him away from this, dude. Don't let this happen. There's a lot of safeguards I feel like that were failed that let this happen that got him charged. That's fair, but I mean, look, I think that's a good thing. I mean, look, I think, I think ultimately we're probably not going to look at a situation where Gavin McKenna gets sentenced to 20 years in prison. No, he's not going to prison. Two years from now when he's scoring 30 goals again in the NHL, nobody's going to give a shit. It's a bar fight where he got a little... It's not even a bar fight. It's spilled on the street. Yeah, it was outside a bar when he, you know, things got a little testy and we'll probably look back on this. And I don't want to say we'll laugh, but it'll just be a, you know, a better... Maybe it's like the Tracy Horton... People have done worse things in the NHL. Yeah, but they've already been drafted is the point. Like this guy, his future has not been set yet. Is this guy going to go to prison or not? Because he's going to play from prison. Wow. That's going to be tough. The California Penal League. They're going to try to protect that man. Oh, so they're going to try to protect him, but he has to go to prison. Well, we don't know. Like that's the thing. Like all that's happened is he's been charged. I assume he's been arraigned at this point, but I mean, like, you know, it has to play out in the court system. Like whether there be... How old is the kid? 18. Oh, kid. Yeah, he'll be tried as an adult. Young people make stupid mistakes. Like no doubt. Like this isn't all on Gavin McKenna, but there's a lot of responsibility that is on him and that's on his people. Like this cannot happen. I don't care. Unless the guy like physically like did something and you have to like use your brute strength to separate something. If it's just words, no man, that's not a line of demarcation to jeopardize your whole future. Don't talk about my mom. Don't talk about my mom. That's it. Like don't talk about my mom. Remember that if he was out and under the influence of something, you lose control. So it's... That's why you have a support group, which is... Exactly. That's why you don't get in a situation like that unless you're surrounded by your people. That's why guys don't go out drinking alone when they're in the NHL. So that's mechanical. So let's say that Ethan is correct here. And his mom was actually there. Right then. And this is coming from a guy. Yeah, it was the weekend of the game in Piper Stadium. I think it was late after the hotel game. So I'm sure his mom was probably in town for the biggest game of the season. And this is coming from a guy who does your mama jokes on Twitter. Don't do that. Don't do that. Don't do that. Not while she's there. Don't insult another person's mom like that. That's just unbecoming of whoever that person was. I'm not saying that you deserve to get punched in the face by understand. Now on... Well, you kind of do deserve to get punched in the face, but you don't actually punch the guy in the face. Like you... There's other ways around this. Well, his future is apparently on the line and we'll see what the prosecutors do. Against Gammon McKenna as we get closer and closer to the draft on Wednesday. The flames beat the Aulers and I lost that was so bad for the Aulers that you have to think about it like this. Jonathan Hubido specifically played in this game, delayed hip surgery and scored a goal. Then after the game opted out of the season for said hip surgery. I think he scored the first goal of that game too. I'm not mistaken. Yes. The first goal of that game McKenzie Weigar had to assist Brian Lomburg also scored in that game. That was the game one and the third. So former Panthers got their licks in against the Aulers. Never fails. Yeah. So despite being second in the Pacific Division, the Aulers have lost seven of the last 12. And it's getting to the point where Leon Drysaddle is pointing fingers. And he's pointing fingers at his goal-tuner. He's not blaming the goalies. Yeah, he's also blaming the coaches. So it's looking bad right now in Edmonton and they are heading into an Olympic break, into the Olympic break. So they're going to have to stew on this one. This is a team that's four points out of first place in their division. Like have you seen in the last few years a team that's had more ebbs and flows and high highs and low lows in the Edmonton Aulers? Like holy cow. Meanwhile, Stuart Stinner is out there playing his brains out in Pittsburgh. Yeah. Edmonton could use a goalie like Stuart Stinner right now and I think that's hilarious. Yeah, it looks like he's working out for Pittsburgh right now, man. Yeah. I mean, we said at the time basically that they traded Stuart Stinner for Stuart Stinner, right? Like that's literally basically what they did. No, we didn't know what Stuart Stinner was. Except that Pan has got the better version of Stuart Stinner, the guy that the Aulers had been waiting for. Seems like that change of scenery is really benefiting him. But also, they just needed to make a better upgrade. This was never the move that they should have made. Like it always should have been either Jari and Skinner, right? Not Jari and Pickard or Jari and now Ingram. Like Jari was never the answer. I don't know what they were thinking. Maybe. And the fact that this has blown up in their face so much is, it's pretty funny to me to be honest with you. Maybe the goalies aren't the problem. Maybe it's not the goaltenders that's the problem. Edmonton. We can talk about that with another team that went to the Stanley Cup final last year as well about the goalies not necessarily being the problem. Because the defensive structure in Edmonton is looking about the same as the defensive structure in Florida right now. Florida is missing half their team. And we'll get to that later. But yeah, I mean, there's a lot of factors that go into it. But you know, I'm cutting this video right now. But as DrySidle is saying, at some point the goalies got to step up and make a save. And I think a lot of Panther fans are feeling that way. And I'm sure a lot of Edmonton fans have been feeling that way for about four or five years now. Yeah, you just don't say it out loud. Like you don't call your guy out like that. Of course. Yes, I'm not saying that he's wrong and that the goalies need to make saves. Like the goalie has not been as good as it needs to be in Edmonton. But don't call your teammates out like that. Like that never ends well. I can't believe I'm saying this. But is Chris Nautblok's... Is he on the hot seat right now? Probably not the way they run things in Edmonton. I don't know, man. He's not the goalie coach, is he? No, he's not. No, I don't know, man. Changing the coach, I feel like that's just like rinse, repeat at this point. Like how is that going to fix things? Not much. Chris Nautblok's done such a good job. I'm saying though, Toronto, they fired their power play coach and the power plays getting a little bit better. Well, they're still on the game. They're still for playoffs. Yeah, like I said, they're in second place in the Pacific Division. And there's a very good chance that they might play the Kings again in the first round. Firing Nautblok would just be another scapegoat for the bigger problem here, which is clearly they haven't had a good enough goal to get. Unless, unless, I will say this, there is one really, really, really good hockey coach that's out there unemployed right now. And if Edmonton brought in Peter DeBoer... I was about to say, Barry Trotts. You have a goalie problem and you want to bring in Peter DeBoer? That's the guy you want to bring in. That guy hates goalies more than anybody in the world. Yeah, Ottinger's not exactly a big fan of him right now. Jake Ottinger situation not withstanding. I think Edmonton and hiring Peter DeBoer would, that would make the league explode. Can you imagine? Yeah. Alright, let's go on to the Panthers then. They are heading into the Unilever... Bum, bum, bum. ...with ten players going to Italy and still a handful of players on the roster injured. And that includes Tobias Biong. A handful? I'm not going to give you a rough estimate, but yes. And that's including Tobias Biong, but who was placed on Inter-Reserve yesterday. So you can add that to everything. And now, Daniel Tarasov last night. So yeah, it's not looking good. They lost five of the last six and are dead last in the Atlantic Division. Not looking good. They have exactly two handfuls of players injured right now. After last night's game where you add to have Tarasov into the mix. They have ten players that are currently injured including their goalie, their top scorer, their best player. Three of their defensemen from last year's cup run including their number one right-handed defenseman and their number two right-handed defenseman. Who I personally think was their best defenseman before he got hurt this season in Seth Jones. And as usual, by the way, last night's game, Panthers lightning complete mess. I put all the blame on Garrett Rank and TJ Luxmore. That was a complete disaster. Those two don't know how to officiate those two teams. They should never officiate that matchup ever again. They are the worst officials in the league. I've said it, put it on record, make that a clip. Put your mic on. Actually, I was talking to E and I was like, do you know what reminded me this game off? It was game three where the Oilers, they lost all their hopes and they started fighting for nothing for no reason. Now we are the Oilers this time. I don't think we're the Oilers. I know, but this reminded me of this. Everybody just, we're fighting and fighting and fighting with no clue. And then you had like five players in the penalty box. They didn't even fit. Look, you have two guys called up from the AHL to play defense last night on your third pairing in Donovan Sobrango, who's been up and down this year and then help me out with this name, boys, because I'm blanking on it. Michalis Havorka. Michalis Havorka, who played his first NHL game last night. Not to be confused with the Havorka situation with Cosmo Kramer and Seinfeld. All right, stick with me here. All right, because the comparable here is the 2022-23 season. After 57 games, they are on pace with that season. In fact, they are a point ahead. They are a point ahead in that season. Which season? 23? 2022-23, that is the one that made the playoffs and reached the Stanley Cup final. They finished the season that year, 15-8 and 2, that is 32 points. They included finishing 6-1 and 1 with Alex Lyon as the starter. That was a 6th game winning streak, but still in game 81, the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins for the Panthers to make the playoffs. Now, this is a far more daunting season than that one. Can I tell you the difference? Yeah. Okay, 57 games this year. They have 61 points. They are 8 points back to the wild card spot. 57 games, they had 60 points in 2023. There were 2 points out of the wild card spot. See, that is why. This is a better conference this year than it was that year. This year, we got some news, by the way, that we did not expect happening. This is according to Frank Cilla. Speaking of trying to make the playoffs. Frank Cilla, really. There is one person you can trust. You can trust him on this. The Panthers apparently have a top 10 protective pick if they go into the draft lottery. Bill Zito has a decision to make. Do you tank? I should not even say tank. Do you forfeit this season and become sellers or do you continue to try for the playoffs? I think you continue to try for the playoffs. I think this Panthers team is built for that. Whether that is going to happen, whether the injuries will allow, I do not know. But everything that we have known about this team and how it has been made up under Bill Zito and Paul Maurice is that they go. They are going to give maximum effort no matter what the situation is. Especially once everybody comes back. That is the other thing. They are going to have full belief once everybody is healthy. 8 points, whatever. We can do that in two weeks. That is fine. That is a big if though. Remember they have 10 players going to the Olympics. One of those players is hurt right now. There is no guarantee. Is he on the plane to Milan? Do we know he is going to Milan? He has missed the last five games or so. He played that Boston game but he only played 11 minutes. Are we looking at a minute's restriction here? I do not know what we are looking at. That is not for me to figure out. They have got it. That is for John Cooper to figure out. Five days until the men's hockey tournament starts. That is the 11th. That is something we should think about. Because he is coming back to the team. There is no guarantee that any of these guys will come back healthy from the Olympics. We saw what happened at the four nations this year. That is not for me to worry about. It is for you to worry about. I would never want to stop these guys from going to the Olympics. I am not going to be one of these fans. That is going to be mad about the fact that we have 10 guys going to the Olympics. I think it is a great thing. The really frustrating thing about this year is like you mentioned, Dave, they were two points out of a playoff spot. In 23 with the same amount of points. One last point. They would be two points out of a playoff spot if they were just in the Western Conference right now. If they were just in the Pacific Division. Because of how the East has been playing this year. This is what I talked about last week. All of these teams in front of them are on fire. They just cannot lose right now. Boston continues to stay hot. Buffalo continues to stay hot. The crucial games before the break for the Panthers. Where that Buffalo loss where they blew a two-goal lead in the first period. And then they lost in the third period on just a complete defensive collapse. And a two-goal lead late against Boston that ends up with Boston getting a point. If you are five points back, instead of... Sorry, you would be... No, you would be six points back instead of eight points back. Like six points back you have a pulse. Eight points back with no games in hand is an incredibly tall task. Hit math. But also... Math on the fly. All you need to do is win four in a row and have the team in front of you lose four in a row. So it's like, you never know. Columbus is one nine of ten and that's gotten them four points out. That's the Eastern Conference right now. Yeah, and that's because of Rick Bonus. That's all because of Rick Bonus. Coach Bump. It's time for Park Lock. It's brought to you by Drap Kings. Drap Kings the Crown is yours. David, having won money this season? I don't remember. I don't like that you start this off as such a negative place. Like I feel like that's not good juju. Yeah, well, I'm sorry. Knock on wood then. Yeah, all right. But we've got Olympic hockey for Park Lock this week. Okay, so maybe it'll be a little bit. But okay, so tomorrow, Saturday, women's hockey tournaments going on. We've got a bunch of games. First, we're going to take Sweden on the puck line minus two and a half against the host country, Italy. I think Italy is getting some juice after a big win against France and their opener. So I think I'm going to take Sweden. I think Sweden's going to take care of business. Germany, we're also going to say this is all puck line. Germany, we're going to take plus one and a half against Japan. Japan's squeaked by France and their opener while Germany put up a good fight against Sweden, even though they lost four to one. I think Germany is at a better team overall. So I'll take Germany with the goals against Japan. And then look, we're all USA supporting here. We're going to take USA against the Finnish team. That's sick. USA's favorite to win gold Roy. They looked really good in their opening win over Chechnya. And Finland hasn't played yet because the half the team has the norovirus or norovirus or whatever it's called. So, you know, maybe there'll be a little lag. We'll take us with the spread. Parley odds on this one is plus four, 28. Nice and friendly. Let's go win some Olympic money. All right, it's time for the hockey stat of the week. Hi, Ethan. Hi guys. To it, Roy. Panther fans, close your ears for this one. This hockey stat of the week. Sergei Babrovsky currently fifth to last in the NHL with minus 14.2 goals saved above expected this season. Just shows how dire the goaltending situation has been for the Panthers this year. As great as Bob has been, he's an absolute hall of fame goaltender. Change the course of this franchise. That contract was worth every single penny. A big reason why the Panthers are in this situation right now is because Sergei Babrovsky has not played well enough. We can talk about the situation in front of him. But at the end of the day, he is fifth to last in the NHL in goals saved above expected. All right, it is time for Rosa and Un Minuto. Rosie, go ahead. Parley. Where's my son? Well, we don't have time for you to search for... Oh, there it is. Okay. What was that? Let's do this. Un Minuto de Hockey Rosa, la hija. This is Un Minuto de Hockey Rosa. This time we're going to run from all this calm until it's not. There it is. Uh-huh. The week started with Tali Bank winning 3-0 against Washington and the U.S. and they lost in overtime. It was impressive. But Corina said, calm down, we have a plan. Victory 3-2 against the Kings. And garlic saving the dignity of overtime. And Buzzi demonstrating that it was not luck. Then more against the Tm4-3, against Ottawa. And John Still saying, captain present. And said, John is noting... Jarvis, sorry. Noticing twice. And it started in a mode that didn't bother 2-0 against the Rangers Soros for Buzzi. And it started in a second. Adding points. Final result, Transmixer is a rose. First place, zero panic and a reminder that when Carolina decides to press, the conversation ends. Because Carolina doesn't always rain, but when it rains, it rains. This was Un Minuto de Hockey with Rose. Your usual Hey, this is Un Minuto de Hockey with Rose. And this time we're heading to Carolina where everything is calm until it's not. The week started badly. They were up 3-0 against Washington and still lost in overtime. Yes, impressive. But Carolina said, relax, we got a plan. A 3-2 win over the Kings. And garlic saving the day in overtime. And Buzzi proving it wasn't a fluke. Then more control. A 4-3 win over Ottawa with Jordan and Stahl showing up. Like a true captain. And started Jarvis scoring twice. And they closed things out with a not disturbed mode. A 2-1-0, a 2-0 win over the Rangers and another shout out to by Buzzi. And a streak of 10 straight games earning points. Final result, 3 wins, 1 loss. First place, zero panic. And best reminder that Carolina decides to turn it off. The conversation is over. Because in Carolina it doesn't always rain. But when it does, it pours. This was Un Minuto de Hockey with Rose. Your weekly recap of Park Passion and a little bit of chaos. And now Ethan is going to pick up my team for next week. All right, Ethan, what is Rose going to talk about next week? The rummage. He's a rummager. The Washington capitals. The Washington capitals. I don't think it's a good team. Yes. All right, well there you go. You get Ovechkin. You get Jacob Chikrin. There you go. Who is the real snub for Team Canada, by the way. Not Evan Bouchard. Jacob Chikrin should be on Team Canada. Speaking of Team Canada, Seth Jarvis is now on the team. He's a good teammate. As is Sam Bennett. As is Sam Bennett. So good for them. Congratulations. It's time for Wins and Fails of the Week. Go ahead, Dave. All right. I wish I started with my winner might fail, Roy. Well, we usually go in order with Wins. You're driving. So I just want to make sure I'm on the right lane. I'm driving us into the Wins section. All right. Well, we've been talking about... The Wins are in the Win column. Oh, nice. Nice Joe Angel. I like that. Joe Angel and Tommy Hutton. All right, we are definitely far-filed. All right, my win of the week. We've been talking about it a lot today. It's the Olympics. And my win is just the U.S. women getting a huge win in their Olympic opener. The Olympic tournament is here. The U.S. women are off to a great start. They got the big 5-1 win against Chechnya. I mentioned it earlier. Haley Stomara had two goals. Alice Carpenter had a goal and assist. Hillary Knight had a gorgeous goal. And Aaron Frankel stopped 13 shots. I like that the U.S. held Chechnya to only 14 shots against. I'm just so happy to see Olympic hockey back on my TV, Roy. I'm really excited for what I've seen so far. I can't wait for the men's tournament to start next week. I'm pumped up, dude. I'm keeping my win in that specific game because Leila Edwards is a star. And she had a coming-of-a-party in that game. U.S. 1-5-1, obviously. She had an assist in that game. She was a plus-1, had three shots on goal. She took a tripping call but also drew a tripping call. She got first deep pair of minutes with 20 minutes and 45 seconds. She did very well. She's going to be a star. Eventually, when Canada plays the United States, Leila is going to be on the ice facing off against their nurse and Sophie Jock, which means for the first time ever, there will be more than one black person, black woman, playing in the same game in the Olympics. So that is going to be very special. And with that, a shout-out to Black Gohockey Club. Renee Hess and Fatou Bah was in New Jersey representing the culture and creating space for black women in hockey as they usually do. They were in New Jersey. There was a video that was going to be played here with Fatou holding a Science Sand Black Girl Hockey Club at the Prudential Center as the Allingers played the New Jersey Devils. Fatou was also at Winter Classic and Stadium Series and helped us out tremendously as the hockey show covered both events. So that's a win for Leila, that's a win for Black Girl Hockey Club and a win for representation in the sport of hockey, Ethan. My win of the week, guys, comes from last night's Panther Game. It was about the only good thing that happened for the Panthers. Watch Gustav Forsling just beat the absolute crap out of JJ Moser here. You have to do something really, really bad to piss Gustav Forsling off and get your ass whipped like this, and he just molly-wops him. I know that things were ugly. Chuck maybe threw a little cheap shot at Kutraub. It's about time somebody finally pointed him out and how dirty he is, sometimes especially against the Panthers. So it was great to see Forsling just whooping on JJ Moser. Yeah, things get ugly when the Panthers in lightning play right now, guys. This was great though. And these are the kinds of things that happened. But if you watch this play out, everybody's focused on Matthew Kutchuk and Brandon Hagel throwing haymakers at each other. But if you watch, Moser kept throwing, not just antagonizing Forsling, but throwing punches at Forsling. And Forsling's just backing away like, nah dude. Wait, so you mean to tell me that the lightning are actually usually the antagonists and the ones that usually get the Panthers started? No, it goes both way. Relax, Panther fan. Okay, just put your flag down for a second. Did you see that last lightning game though? They go at each other. They go at each other. I'm not saying one is more physical than the other. I'm saying in this specific instance, Moser was going after Forsling during this scrum and Forsling wanted nothing to do with it. He's like the most chill guy on the team. But he's also the most cut, ripped, in shape guy on the team. So you don't want to mess with Gus Forsling. To see him just like, okay, red light, green light, I'm going. Moser had no shot. Bad ass. No shot. So badass. At least Brandon Hagel didn't get hurt this time. Rosie, what's your win? My win of the week. I hate bugs, but this bug has captured my heart. Oh, look at that bug. Didn't he almost run us over right after he did this? Oh, really? When we were walking into the stadium. Look at the presence of everything. I'm going to do that. He did. He almost ran us over in the media entrance. Yeah, we were walking in for the game. And all of a sudden we hear peep peep peep. Watch out, watch out. And freaking Thunderbug. Right five. Thunderbug didn't do his job well. I had to dive in a bush, which we've seen. We've seen that. We've definitely seen that during Gasparilla. That was a con occurrence for sure. Oh, boy. That was maybe the highlight of our trip was the 30 minutes that we sat in traffic. We moved maybe 30 feet and it was the best, most entertaining 30 minutes of my life. I wish we had more time to talk about that because that was crazy. Oh my God, dude. All right, fail of the week. Fail of the week. All right. Nikita Zedora had an interesting exchange with the referee during the stadium series game that Roy and I were at in Tampa. As you guys, I'm sure know there was an amazing goalie fight between Andre Vasilevsky and Jeremy Swamin that had us all pumped up. I'm still jacked up over it. But after the fight, Zedora had an interesting little exchange with the referee about who should be sitting in the penalty box and serving these goalie fight penalties. Play it please. Here, what's the ruling? It stays 5 on 4. But the goalies can stay in? Discrimination. No, good. Why discrimination? Why good? We were not allowed to sit in the cold box and move on, OK? I let the refs just like, let's move on, OK? Let's move on, OK? But that's such a good argument. When I fight, I have to sit in the cold box. They get to keep playing. Yeah, well, you know what? You should have been a goalie. I'm very confused about this rule because a long time ago, when the goalie tend to spot they actually got game misconducts. And when they crossed the red line, it was penalties. And I don't understand the rule here. I don't know if it was changed or not. I need more clarification. Maybe we should ask Greg that. Maybe. What was interesting about this goalie fight was that both goalies crossed the red line. Yes. Yes. Which is like, OK, well, let's keep it all even. Like, I loved it. They both took their helmets off ahead of time. They both were like giving each other pats in the back afterwards. That was such a great goalie fight from start to finish. Same 40 in the Dirkowicz-Bavarski fight. That one, I feel like, had more anger in it, though. Yes, it was a staged. The big copycat. The big copycat. Oh, no, you didn't. Bob throws hands in like a week and a half later. Vasilevsky throws hands. Yeah. The big copycat. It was staged. The league made them do it. I fell in the week and I say this with a smile on my face. Your words not mine. Tony D'Angelo. I mentioned, by the way, it was a win. My win of the week was basically representation in the sport of hockey. This guy is the complete opposite of representation in the sport of hockey. So at this point, he should be a Hall of Famer in the wins and fails column because this fool would be first ballot in the foul ring. All right. So this is what happened during Monday's Islanders game against the Capitals. Nick Dowd, who, by the way, is 500 game had his shot deflected off from the side of the crease off of Adam Pelik off of his stick and eventually off of the skate of Tony D'Angelo. And that goal made it three to one. The Capitals eventually won four to one. And then, funny enough, Craig Lachlan said on the Capitals broadcast that good things happen to good people. So what does that make Tony D'Angelo? I just love that you never miss an opportunity. Hey, man, it's always on my radar. It's like a big bogey, just a big bird flying into a plane. Yeah, he's the failed little week Hall of Famer. Let's put that right now, Ethan. Rosie. So, Ethan doesn't have one. Yeah, no, no, no, Ethan doesn't have one. You don't have one. Yeah, no. So we're going to finish with mine. Good week, the Olympics, my birthday. No fails this week. My ass. Look at Queen Hughes. That's how we all fail this week. So that's my fail of the week. One, two, three, very slippery. Ah! Did you see him fall down at warm-ups last week? I'm so sorry. In the background of Brock Faber being interviewed, did you see him just wipe out on his ass? Unbelievable. This is like that funny video of women wearing high heels and bringing their ankles just falling down. For those of you watching on DraftKings Network, please check out our YouTube video because, coming up next, we have ESPNC and NHL rider Greg Wysinski. That's coming up next on The Hockey Show. Hey, Roy Buddy. Yo. You know that energy shift when the game gets good and everybody, altogether, in unison, knows to stand up on their feet? Oh, absolutely, Mike. Yeah, you've been at many big-time sporting events. You know that moment quite well. That's what it's like when you take your first sip of quare valve. Oh, delicious. It's the signal that says, we're not checking the time anymore, pal. It's when small talk turns into stories. Quarevo, man. It's at high five, a random stranger effect. That's right. The game is popping. You're hugging people you never met before. That's the kind of energy that quarevo brings. It's so smooth, so delicious. That's the quarevo effect. Keep it, quarevo. And we're going to talk to him because he's our friend and we like talking about hockey. And hockey is what we talk about on the show because that's the name of the show. The name of the show is the hockey show. So let's start with the big news this week. There were two trades that happened before the Olympic roster freeze hit. The Blues traded Nick Bukstead to the Devils for Thomas Bordelow and a conditional fourth round pick. The Blake Blockbuster. Huge. That's the second biggest trade of the two trades. The second. The other trade was the Rangers trading Artemy Panarin to the Kings for Liam Greentree. And two conditional third round picks in 2026. The Kings then extended Panarin to a two-year contract worth $11 million per year. The Rangers immediately got shot out at home by the Hurricanes. So Greg, please explain this trade. Why the Kings? Where do the Rangers go from here? Which is probably first round pick. To the lottery. And will the top prospect in the Kings organization work out in New York? All right. Well, I mean, I had a solid 20 on Nick Bukstead, but I guess I'll just like trash that. Yeah. Yeah, we could throw that one. Um, Stead, former Panther, you know? Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's a tall guy. Nice dude too. So like the Panarin situation is interesting because here's how I think it worked out. He wanted to go to the Florida Panthers. The Florida Panthers are like, this cap space that we have, it's for this guy, Barkoff, who's going to come back and play for us at some point this season. So I'm afraid we don't have any more of it for you. And so then Panarin and his family are like, what's kind of like Miami, but not. And they're like Los Angeles. And so what happened then was the Rangers went to all of these teams that were interested in trading for Panarin. And they said, look, you guys all are willing to go like four years, 11 million per maybe even more than that, but you're going to have to convince him that your spot is better than Los Angeles, which is a tough gig if your team is in Raleigh. So at the end of the day, like other teams offered more money and they offered longer contract, longer term contracts, Washington, Carolina, among them Seattle apparently got into the mix two, according to Elliott Friedman. But Panarin's heart was set on Los Angeles. So it's a one market trade market for the Rangers and GM Chris Drury. And when that happens and the guy has no movement clause and the guy is only going to a place where he's going to get a contract extension, you're kind of going to take what you can get. And I actually gave the Rangers a B on my trade grade because I thought they did as good as they're going to do in this situation. And Liam Green Tree is a player that has a lot of potential to answer your question. I'm a little bit worried about the Rangers development team being the ones to tap it because they have a absolutely atrocious track record with prospects turning out to be good players. Shout out Cop Cop O'Coco. But for the Kings, it's a great move. I mean, like you don't get locked into a long-term deal. You only have them this year and then two more. And he solves a lot of problems for this team, which is they can't score and their power play stinks and they needed to have more offensive depth if they were going to ever have a prayer of winning a round in the playoffs, which is basically where the bar is for this franchise right now. Well, beating Edmonton in the first round, I feel like is the bar if they can ever. Finally. No, the bar is avoiding Edmonton in the first round. They've lost four straight seasons. Like do whatever you can. Even if you got to get kicked in the teeth by Colorado, at least you're not seeing Edmonton again in the first round. Do you find it a little surprising, I guess, that Panarin didn't want to go to his best chance at winning a cup? Or I mean, no disrespect to the Kings, but they're certainly not maybe a top tier team in the lead right now. But Panarin clearly valued location over victory. And I guess to me, that's a little surprising, but I'm curious what you thought. It's not to me. Like when he was a free agent, you know, gosh, it must have been like what, 2017, 2018, some of that neighborhood, you know, and was leaving Columbus. It was pretty clear that geography was extremely important for him. He in theory wanted to play in Florida, like his friend Sir Gabriel Brodsky ended up doing with the Panthers. But with New York on the table, that was an option. And he gladly went to play in New York with a big contract and trade protection. In this case, he wanted to play. I had heard that it was important for him and his family to play in a place that they wanted to live. And clearly Los Angeles is a place they wanted to live. That's a huge factor for him, maybe even more so than winning, unless you're bullish on the king's prospects post Anjay Kovatar this season. And that's just how it is for some guys. Like I said, hockey players, you just like this, man. Like you guys know my bit, his whole, like whenever they resign, whenever a guy decides to stay in Winnipeg, his stuff is there. That's how they think sometimes. And in the case of Panarin and his family, the beach is there, I guess we could say. He certainly ain't signing for tax purposes. Maybe we could put that to rest for a second in the NHL. Oh, yes. Going from playing in New York to playing in California, clearly he's not looking for the old Florida-Dallas discount like other guys were. All right, Wish, enough about this NHL bullshit. Nobody wants to talk about this league anymore. The Olympics are here. The Panthers are out of the playoffs. Nobody cares about the NHL anymore. The Olympics are here. How juiced up are you and how badly are we going to beat Canada's ass coming in a few weeks? I'm going to talk about the NHL in a second. What are you talking about? Let's not talk about the NHL. Let's just talk about all the NHL players in Italy. Correct. 110% correct. Listen, man, here's where I am as an American hockey fan. I would be shocked if Canada didn't play for gold unless their goal-tending just turned into a giant pile of poo-poo, which I don't think it will. Because if Jordan Bennington ate the solution, Logan Thompson or Darcy Kemper could be. I think they've got a better group of goalies than they had in four nations behind Bennington. But as an American who would love nothing more than to never have to think about or hear about or talk about Mike Aruzioni again, and have a new beautiful legend to hang on to as an American hockey fan of winning gold at the Olympics. I'm a little nervous, and here's why I'm nervous. I think there'll come a time in the quarterfinals or the semifinals when they're down 2-1 to Slovakia or Finland in the third period. And the pressure of, oh my god, what if we don't play for gold? And the pressure of, oh my god, what if we don't get another shot at Canada? Might have them gripping their sticks and might have them flopping before playing in a medal game. They're going to be messing up hotel rooms again? I would. I mean, the Kachucks are going to be there. You know, there's a good chance of it happening. So that's my concern. In all honesty, this is the deepest, most talented group of Americans we've ever put on a national hockey team. They should play for gold. And based on what we saw in four nations with a healthy Quinn Hughes, with more offense than they had in that game, Tage Thompson, a healthier Kachuck, like they should be Canada too. My one concern? I'm nervous. I'm nervous. I'm nervous because when I look at this U.S. roster, which is incredibly deep, no doubt, I don't really see a lot of championship experience on this roster. I don't see a lot of guys that I'm like, oh, this is, I know this guy can perform in crunch time. I mean, Austin Matthews, Jack Hughes, Eitgehl, I guess, is one of Stanley Cup. Matthew Kachuck. Yeah, Matthew Kachuck, exactly. I'm just thinking like, man, like Canada is full of gold medal winners, Stanley Cup winners. That's going to come into play too. Yeah, I'm with you. And you know, you're relying a lot, I think, on Eichel in this situation. He's been fantastic for Vegas this year and I think is going to be kind of the counterbalance to the way that Matthews sometimes can play in key situations. Like Eichel is a guy who rises to the occasion. But there's not a lot of those guys on the roster. And I agree with you. That's what makes me a little bit nervous. When you look over at Canada, if they're like shoulders or slump and they got Sydney Crosby in the room to be like, hey, boys, I've done this a few times. Like we don't have that on the United States. And so there's a lot of reliance, I think, on the coach. There's a lot of reliance on how good the goal tending is. And again, like at the end of the day, is this roster constructed correctly? Because I've been screaming it from the rooftop since they put it together. This is a team designed to beat Canada when it's a team that should be designed to be Canada. Like put Lane Hudson on the roster, put Cole Cawfield on the roster, put the best and brightest offensive stars that we have in the talent pool on this roster and just steamroll everybody. But instead, it's built more towards the grit and grind. I like to call it red, white and blue piled from 1980, you know, where they believe they need a bunch of lunch pail guys and every American hockey roster in order to win. In the Olympics, I would have preferred to have just seen them put the pedal down, flex on how deep the talent pool is amongst goal scorers and go from there. But that's not the team they built. Kevin McKenna guy himself in a bit of trouble over the past week. How is this felony assault going to affect not only his draft stock, but his career coming up? First of all, it's like NCAA hockey, just not on the level of basketball and football where they can't just make this thing disappear. They're like, they're there for every other athlete that's ever gotten in trouble. So listen, man, it's a serious deal. I mean, he's got a felony one charge for, you know, allegedly breaking someone's jaw in a fight outside of bar. And, you know, the process begins next week. And so far as the preliminary hearing and everything else, I haven't talked to anybody that believes he's going to do time for this. But you never know insofar as being charged with with some serious stuff. But how is it going to affect his draft position? He's a hockey player, friends. Yeah, it can only help. Like, can you imagine like someone like Bill Garan of the of the Minnesota Wild being like, keep me away from Gavin McKenna. He broke a guy's jaw with a punch outside of bar. No, this is the sort of thing that endears him to to NHL general managers. So far as his his raucous toughness, remember, like, we're not too far removed from Joe Thornton, a young Joe Thornton getting into a bar fight back when he was just a skinny guy that passed the puck. Then he got into a bar fight and people were like seeing him differently. And I wouldn't be surprised if there's a bunch of NHL general managers that look at what Gavin McKenna did here. And they're like, oh, oh, I did. I was unfamiliar with your game, sir. Gavin McKenna is going to fit right in on the Florida Panthers. That top protected pick ends up being number one. Gavin McKenna is going to be a perfect fit for the fun fact. Matthew Schaefer, 10th overall odds the Islanders had just just saying it's not unheard of. The lottery works in mysterious ways and there's going to be a bunch of really interesting teams in the lottery this year, including, you know, maybe two New York teams, Florida, a lot of teams that will have a shot at this kid. I'm just looking forward to seeing how the NHL is going to make it how everything uncomfortable during this this draft. Somehow it'll go to Pittsburgh. No, they're in a playoffs. Somebody who cares somehow. They'll find a way. They'll find a way. They're going to be like fourth in the east and they'll get the first overall pick somehow. That's really funny. I was saying this morning, like the Penguin story is kind of like one of the most remarkable things I've seen, you know, and so far is where we all thought they'd finish and where they are. Like we were all expecting at this point to be talking about like where they're going to trade sit at the trade deadline, but instead they look like they're going to be a playoff team. And it will all be worth it if we get one more Pittsburgh Washington playoff series. Like it'll all be worth it to get that. I would be done. Of course. But I think Washington's got to hold up there under the bargain there. Of course. Yeah, just like just like Stadium Series, everything staged. The league is just. Yeah, the whole league is K-Fabe. Yeah, the entire thing is K-. Listen, seven consecutive power plays for the Lightning during Stadium Series. What is that? It's a fun comeback. That's what that was. It's a, you know, it's an undisciplined performance by the Boston Bruins. What that is. The most penalized team in the NHL committing a lot of penalties. Two penalties in overtime! Roy, you think Swamin was like wearing an earpiece and someone screaming go, go, go when he's thinking about going out and fighting? That I believe more than they handed them the game with seven or I believe that maybe Swamin and Vassilevski before the game were kind of like wink, wink, but this is right after the intermission though Ethan. But Browski fought a couple weeks ago. Let's try and do something new. Wink, wink, wink, wink. This is after the intermission. They told, they went to both locker rooms and told, hey listen. I told you guys. Listen to yourselves. Listen to yourselves. Listen to yourselves. Like this was like Super Under the, we're talking about how this was like maybe the most entertaining stadium series game ever. It gave us a goalie fight. It gave us a five goal comeback. And we're bitching. It's not that we're bitching. Dave, it's that we're coping because the Panthers are going to miss the play. I refuse to believe that the same league that tried to keep John Scott out of the All-Star game is the league that is now setting up games to succeed on national television. Come on. You didn't do too much credit. No, they went all out of control on that one. That was just fans. It's just like, hey, they do not listen to the fans. They want to do the own thing until the fans actually say, do this. And then they finally count down. That's right. Yeah. That's the next scary Betman press conference. All the fans are going to be chanting, bring back Vince. You're right. Yeah, let's not bring back Vince. Let's not do that at all. No. I never understood that. I understand it's like an anti-triple H chant at these like shows, but like, man, folks, read the room. Yes, please, please. Tribbaceous is doing a fine job. Let's not go down that road. Let's not go down. Greg Rosinski of ESPN. He is the NHL senior writer. We appreciate him coming on the show because we love him. And that's just how things go. Greg, thank you for joining us. Anytime. Once again, thanks to Greg Rosinski of ESPN. Before we go, we do have the time to talk about what happened in Tampa and what happened while we were waiting on the street. Oh, that story. Yes, that story. Dave, why don't you tell everybody what happened and what we witnessed? Well, while sitting in traffic next to the Tampa Lightning Arena, like during gasparilla, so people are walking around, pirate outfits all around our car. We barely moved, but it was perfect because on the sidewalk, there was two things that were happening that had our attention. The first was a young couple, maybe about, you know, they looked like they were old enough to drink, but they had a fight going on that was going up and down the sidewalk. The drama, the tears, throwing the phones, pushing each other away. It was everything that you'd want to see on a street drunk fight and more. I think she actually called the cops and he hid around the corner next to a building. They disappeared for a minute. They came out. A security guard was watching them. We didn't know if they disappeared for some mid-fight fun and shenanigans, and then they came back and resumed the fight. I wasn't sure. That's where my mind went with it. But then in the middle of all this, we had an intermission show of these, was it two or three? It was two. Two women dressed very pirately, kind of stumbling down the sidewalk. One big girl, one thin girl. And then between, I don't know if it was Roy or if it was Pena, but one of the two in the car was giving us play-by-play, and it was like, oh, this one's on the left leg. Oh, wait, wait, she's teetering on the right leg. And then all of a sudden, into the bushes, they both went. Into the bushes, they both stayed. For about a minute and a half. Yeah, so in 90 seconds, they were in the bush. It was hard to see them get out, but let me tell you, sitting in traffic, waiting to get to the bar, this was the best kind of entertainment we could have gotten in Tampa. It was like a couple of trees falling into forest, and all you could do was like, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, right into the bushes. So yeah, that was a lot of fun, just like the game was a lot of fun. Yeah. So we enjoyed our time in Tampa. So that is the end of this week's show. It is all Olympics from here on out for Gino and whoever else is who's the director back there? Danny? Danny. Danny is back there as well. Thank you, Gino and Danny. Rosie and Ethan, thank you. You guys did an excellent job. That's David Dwork. My name is Roy Bellamy. We will talk about the Olympics next week. See ya.
