NO PICKS: NFL Denies Chicago Bears Comp Picks AGAIN | CHGO Bears Podcast

•Apr 3, 202615 days agoSummary
The CHGO Bears Podcast discusses the NFL's denial of compensatory picks for the Bears' hiring of Ian Cunningham as GM, analyzing the flawed ruling and its implications for future front office diversity. Hosts debate the Green Bay Packers rivalry's importance and interview NFL draft expert Fran Duffy about the Bears' draft strategy with their remaining picks.
Insights
- The NFL's comp pick denial despite the Bears fulfilling the Rooney Rule's intent creates perverse incentives for teams to obscure front office structures rather than clarify them
- Ben Johnson's willingness to embrace the Packers rivalry publicly has fundamentally shifted how the Bears organization approaches divisional competition and team culture
- The 2024 draft class offers significant depth at safety, tight end, and wide receiver, allowing the Bears to address needs on day three rather than spending premium picks
- Winning the division requires beating all three divisional opponents equally; the Packers rivalry narrative, while compelling, shouldn't overshadow the mathematical importance of Lions and Vikings matchups
- The Bears' five picks in the top 129 selections provide meaningful draft currency despite losing the compensatory pick, with flexibility to trade or develop multiple positions

Quotes
"The policy is designed to provide picks for the primary football executive position. The league determined Mr. Cunningham did not fill that role with the Falcons as it is defined in league rules."
NFL Statement•Early in episode
"He was the assistant general manager now he's the general manager to me that sounds like a promotion. He was a black man he is a black man he got promoted that's the point of the Rooney rule."
Carmen DeFalco•Mid-episode
"Ben did the opposite. Ben realized that if they're going to win the North, you can't hide from the Packers. You have to, if you are going to be dominant in this division, you have to beat your division rival."
Ryan Poles•Late episode
"For 30 years, they've had the upper hand. So to see what appears to be finally a turning of the tide has been very rewarding."
George McCaskey•Near end of episode
"I think that's what you want to play for. I think you want to play for a guy that's not scared. I got that's aggressive. Some of that wants to compete."

end for all things com pics and everything else Adam hogmark Carmen with you Steven Nicholas back from another night of domination is producing the program as for always Greg Braggs is on assignment this Friday afternoon you know I just saw he posted on Instagram a photo of his daughter swimming in a pool in question how many off days does this guy does she get and I was wondering the same thing yeah well some of us you know work through the whole vacation work through the entire spring break prioritize the you know the show that means so much to me clearly and everybody else out here it's just doing whatever they want not me and you Steven of course hog took you know a real vacation that he deserved and Greg does seven million things every single day but it was interesting to me yeah I don't really feel like working tomorrow at spring break and at ease got things to do and I want to be a dad and of course that's a great thing more important than the show so we support Greg in the best part was he didn't know why his daughter had the day off which of course it's good Friday so yeah well and happy good Friday to all happy Easter coming up on Sunday shout out to the Passover people that went crazy earlier the week it had a good hug gotta just throwing out random Jewish names that you won't understand how but alright let's let's start with it just didn't the same thing you just said like I don't happy good Friday I don't know if that's the right isn't it no what is the day that it was the day that Jesus died so I don't know if it's happy okay that I did say that wrong my bad a good Friday to everybody happy Easter he came back on Sunday he came well that's the happy day yeah he bounced right back it was you know that's I'm in a terrible land right now let's move along let's move on to the cop picks so alright Hogue did you I want to go through the mind of Hogue to start on the compix do you did you think at any point in time when you heard this week that we're still fighting that it was gonna turn the bears away did you have that thought I think I opened my mind to the idea that maybe there's a possibility the fact that the NFL was you know a lot allowed them to come all the way to New York City not that it's far but you know the fact that there was an actual appeal that went that far and the bears were able to make their case in person with the commissioner I I think the bears thought that they made some progress and thought that it was a possibility but I'm now that the ruling has come down officially I am not surprised that the NFL has not budged because the NFL did they they put the hammer down and they rarely lift the hammer up you know they're the NFL they do these things and I'm just I don't think that it clears anything up though I like I feel like the NFL thinks they're clearing this up by just being let's read what the statement is right okay so here's the statement the statement says the matter is now closed following the club's appeal the NFL informed the bears today they will not receive compensatory picks the policy is designed to provide picks for the primary football executive position the league determined Mr. Cunningham did not fill that role with the Falcons as it is defined in league rules so you have a situation where the bears fulfilled pretty much the entire point of the Rooney rule and why the comp picks exist in this situation but because the Falcons have a very unique front office structure where Ian Cunningham who by all accounts including Matt Ryan's is in a very normal general manager position with the one exception that technically Matt Ryan is the president of football and the NFL is deeming him to be the primary football executive position they're saying that sorry this is you don't get the complex and the reason why I think this still leaves us all open ended even by this statement and I'm not sure the NFL realizes this is it doesn't this incentivize more teams to create this sort of vague director of football position and create more of a gray area with what the general manager position is because here's the thing with most presidents Karm most presidents oversee football and business which is pretty much what the bears have like at the end of the day Kevin Warren or even the owner like it there's always a great gray area they all have the power at any point to be the primary football guy if they really want to and override the general manager just because Matt Ryan's position takes the business out of it and it's just just football I don't see how that really changes what these other structures are and other organizations you could make that same argument in almost every NFL front office that the general manager at the end of the day doesn't actually have the full power here so I just feel like the NFL with this ruling is actually making this more confusing yeah I'm not that smart of a guy I'm gonna prove that on the show on the daily but to me this one just seems very clear cut he was the assistant general manager now he's the general manager to me that sounds like a promotion he was a black man he is a black man he got promoted that's the point of the Rooney rule I don't understand what a hoop they created here or or why they created it because these draft picks don't come from the team they come from the league the Falcons were losing picks the Bears were just getting picks like if I was the NFL again we've been down this road a million times why wouldn't you want to make this a lovely positive story for you it's a good story it's just bizarre to me here's here's what I want to ask though and maybe you know the answer this whole maybe you don't I should have talked to you about the show before this but you know I didn't so I'm putting on the spot who did the lobbying like because I've heard some people say that well Kevin should have done more here but Kevin's not gonna do more because Kevin when he leaves the Bears wants to be the commissioner so he doesn't want to be a jerk to Roger because he wants Roger's endorsement so he didn't really press him on it and then we you know and then here's George we're hearing him we did this we did that we we gave him these duties we created it we we set him up to be the GM we did everything for him and we're really happy by the way that he got this job but we should be rewarded for that so I'm just wondering like you know who was in the room talking in New York do you have any idea you will polls Warren and McCaskey yes all three they were all there yes see but yeah okay I'm just wondering like like somebody I don't know why I'd like to hear I would like to have been in the room I wasn't invited surprisingly like what was the argument and how do you lose that argument or is it just like I don't it sounds to me like I don't care what you say everything you say makes sense but we're gonna do this because it's set some weird precedent that nobody understands I don't you know so it's just it's really a dumb thing and it is you know it I do wonder like how angry did the bears allow themselves to get here and you know or did they just kind of play nice I I do wonder that because if I were the bears and I do though I mean they are I can tell you for sure they're not happy but like what do you mean like what do they do I I mean you could be real you could just again not walk in there and be cordial and I'm not saying it would have made a difference but like was there like some level of screaming match going on and then maybe that's not the best way to go about it either but I would you know I would be interested to hear like how they how they express their disappointment and why they're taking the extensive time to come and appeal in the middle of a draft season and a middle of a stadium brawl and everything else that's going on that like you know these people are busy they don't you know they're not looking for more things to do so the fact that they took the time to do it shows that they really you know they really feel wronged here and when they are so it just and they're the other side of it too long-winded now is that like they didn't do this to get the compics they did it because it was the right thing to do Ryan was looking for an assistant GM that he liked and trusted and thought was a smart guy that would help him and that's what it's exactly what Ian Cunningham did he didn't do it because well if we do this someday we'll get compics but they also like hey are we gonna get a win-win here because we deserve it and the NFL just said no which pisses me off and I think it pisses off you know all Bears fans really so yeah I yeah I don't I don't I feel like we've talked about this endlessly I'm not surprised the NFL ruled this way because the NFL can be stubborn and they I think they could do a way better job explaining their position and they're not and I think that's part of the frustrating part too well let me just take this in a different direction too because the NFL is obviously gonna do whatever they want to do and they're the king of the sports mountain and there's no one even sniffingly close MLB is like making a nice comeback here I think at least a little with with shortening up games that's been a good move the NBA has gone in the complete tank nope even the most die-hard basketball fans me find the league unwatchable that's that's terrible the NHL is the NHL and whatever so you know now you're putting games on the NFL is gonna have games on every night of the week hug next year except for Tuesday Wednesday night we're gonna do that you know leading into Thanksgiving is now like they look at that as a really attractive night and look they're not wrong any night you put the NFL on it's a good thing but it's also at some point what you have is going to get diminished and more so than that when you put it on every single network under the Sun and ask your fans to do that I do think at some point you're being penny wise and pound foolish so I don't you know you're the king of the mountain it doesn't matter but I it does not sit well particularly with me as a side note to today's news what this is that they keep putting games on what does that do with the complex I'm sorry I'm just confused doesn't it just serves us talking about how powerful they are that they can do whatever they want about the fact they can do whatever the hell they want period and the story whether it's logical illogical they're just gonna do it period we're the NFL we're king this is what we're doing stick it because we know we have you bears you're right don't care not doing that for you fans you don't want to pay for another stream don't care putting it Amazon it's at some point people will it will it will not be a good thing for them now maybe that doesn't matter but I it's like I also on that side of it for me it's like how many yachts do you need to ski behind how much money do you got to make you're all making insane dollars that you'll never spend if you have half a brain so be good to the people that have supported you to get to this point that's all I'm saying well let's talk about the picks the bears do have I think part of the reason why this is a bummer just from a draft perspective is that third round pick would have mattered you know yes it would have you know you're right now the bears have 25 57 60 and 89 so they have four picks in the top 89 that would give them another pick right around 100 so you could have said they had five picks in the top 100 six picks in the top 129 nice so five picks in the top 129 and then drops all the way off to the seventh round so they're gonna have to make the most of those five picks getting an extra swing always matters I mean that's it's draft currency and you know we've seen the bears trade a fourth round pick for Joe Tooney right fifth round pick for their center all three of their interior offensive linemen are actually from picks from trades you know involving picks so these that that's I think the bear I don't think that's the primary reason why the bears are fighting for this but it's certainly it would have helped right like you know I I do think they're genuinely coming from at this from from the standpoint of hey we have been forefront on the diversity side of everything that the NFL is trying to push the bears have been huge in all this they serve on the committee and they seemingly did everything to a tee here with Ian Cunningham and they're they're being punished for it because the Falcons created a new position you know that just happens to be Matt Ryan and Ian Cunningham also interviewed for that position didn't get that one I got the GM I mean there's a million reasons why this doesn't make sense but it also just from not having a pick standpoint is is a bomber which it's called get hot Ryan polls get hot Ben Johnson make the best of what you got here and luckily Hogue we've got a guy by the name of friend Duffy who might help us figure out who the bears should might will take with all their picks coming up here in a second if are we bring in our NFL draft expert we have been missing him but we've got him now look at our guy Fran Duffy back and ready to rock and roll Fran them over getting close good to see you appreciate you make it time for us Carm hope what's going on guys good to be back with you guys so I want to start you with this friend Katie McDonald was at house hall yesterday according to his own Instagram we had a good conversation about him on the show yesterday where are you at with Katie McDonald who a lot of people view as a first round pick you seem to view him more as maybe a second rounder how would how do you feel like he would fit the Chicago Bears right now yeah I mean I think that if you're looking at Katie McDonald you just have to accept the fact that it's unlikely he's gonna develop into a disruptive pass rusher right I think that he is an early downs like a potentially dominant early downs defender who is going to give you very little pass rush upside and that's the thing is that when you look at some of the guys that have gotten taken with that profile you know I think of like Massey Smith you know Jordan Davis right the guy you know the pure like nose tackles that go high maybe they weren't great pass rushers in college but they had the athleticism to say like okay you can dream you could squint a little bit and see like they can get there with time and patience and look those guys typically don't get there with time and patience but even when I'm looking at McDonald I'm not sure that I even like see that upside as a rusher right and so that's where you know it's it is very useful to have an elite run defender it's not that you know I wouldn't draft that guy but to take him at 30 that that would be a little you know to take me the top 30 I should say like that would be risky for me like that's probably a little bit too rich alright let's go edge rusher at 25 your friend who do you I'm looking you know on your big board you don't really have an edge rusher anywhere in range really so that's why I wanted to ask this question this way to friend friend yeah we forced you to pick a pass rusher an edge rusher not nins not an interior defender has to be a has to be like a defensive and edge rusher going to the Chicago Bears at 25 who would be your pick if you had to do that I think that if we're me you know I'm assuming TJ Parker off the board are we saying Parker's off the board we are that's your fifth edge yeah I would say you know if you're going to make me pick I guess it's probably Mesa door and you know the here's my thing with Mesa door he to me with him I think that we're talking about a little bit of a cap ceiling and we talk about with the age and things like that I think that the important thing with the age is that it contextualizes what we saw with him on film because the film is good right he's a polished player he can win in a couple different ways he's got multiple moves in his back but I'm looking at a guy who turns 25 years old I'm pretty sure like this week I got a look at the guy that had a birthday I know it was first week of April so he turns 25 very soon I can 24 year old it was a April 5th there again I know that is the reason I know that is because I was reading the Fran Duffy draft guide when I was in Arizona the other day because I was looking at this guy how do you get how do you get that guy co do you remember when you go to all see a show calm and you become a diehard as we let you can use it a million different codes including John's but let's let Duffy finish his point here I think Mesa door I think with Mesa door the other big thing is that again like he's a 24 year old last year going up against guys that are 1920 21 and you know they're using that physical that physical advantage in his favor and so I look at him at you know if he were you know a quarterback if he were a wide receiver you know do you get a little bit further away from the ball where it's not necessarily about like physical dominance like the grown man strength aspect of the game right that's the thing is when we're talking older players guys that are on the line of scrimmage guys that are close to the ball it gives me a little bit more pause it gives me a little bit more cause for concern and so I do look at Mesa door as you know being a little bit capped so that's why I'm certainly lower on him than consensus but if you told me hey we got draft one of these guys in this spot and Parker's off the board it's probably Mesa door you could swing me on a couple of the other ones you know I know that some people really like Zion young I just don't see the rush upside there I think when you're looking at our Mason Thomas I worry about the run defense but he's got more rush upside so you know you're there's kind of the give and take but yeah I would say I'd probably go Mesa door if your team isn't using your CRM it isn't working pipe drive is a simple CRM it's easy to use so you've got your you've got your mod McCoy is your second corner going 18th he's 18 on your big board so and then you've got three and four ponds and the Lana if I'm saying that right I hope I am going right in front of the bears if any of those four are there is that a no-brainer for you for the bears you know I think that the in terms of like in terms of style and prototype like the other the type of corners we've seen half success I think your mod McCoy is like built in the lab to play in that scheme right I think that he is that he would be the perfect fit now I don't know that he's gonna make it to them at that point the especially given that you know what he looked like at the pro day and that was the first time we've seen him on the field doing anything publicly since his torn ACL in January of 2024 so I think when you're looking at Terrell you know there was there was concern there was projection and maybe now after seeing him work out there's a little bit you know more more ease there with that selection now maybe he does go you know in the top 15 top 20 of this draft but you know I like I love a Vian Terrell he's my CB one he's my top corner on the board if he were there I would like that pick I don't know that he's like the perfect Dennis Allen you know they type of player unless they figure that he could kick into the slot and play in there but we know that they've got Collar Gordon and so you know I don't I don't think the lane makes it there when I look at some of these other players again like I think the the only other one that I would look at and say like oh like he makes some sense but I don't know if in round one it might be a little bit rich haven't really heard a lot of round one buzz on Devon Moore the corner from Florida Julian Neil the corner from Arkansas like these are big-bodied guys that have that length that have the ball skills ability to take the football away that we've seen from this Dennis Allen defense especially here in Chicago all right I want to ask you about a center prospect Yep. Fibetchi Weewoo. Yes. See him creeping up there a little bit for you. Where are you at on him because you know the Bears they made their move for Garrett Bradbury but I do kind of wonder you know is that a one-year kind of placeholder is this a situation they still looked at at a center that they can continue to develop and I know Fibetchi Weewoo is one of these you know versatile interior offensive line types out of Oklahoma. Yeah he's played some guard he's played some center that versatility is certainly going to serve him well hope did you catch my player comp for him. Was this the one that was James Daniels? It surely was. Yes. It was James Daniels. Now I like Weewoo. This is the guy that I saw I did not study even before the combine by the time I got into the combine I hadn't gotten to his film yet but saw him at the shrine bowl live actually first I saw him live was back in the fall Oklahoma came to Philly to play temple and so I went over to the game. I watched the first two three quarters got out of hand but was down the field warmups and I took down to the hour this guy is kind of the ringleader of this offense one of the leaders there in that group well put together he's a little bit on the shorter side but well put together athlete he's got some twitch to him just watching him go through warmups and I see him at the shrine bowl and I thought he was one of the best offensive linemen down in Frisco at the shrine bowl. So I'm like all right like yeah this guy is a draftable player for sure do a little bit more work and it's like man like all the intangibles are fantastic. He began his career at North Texas was a captain is like a true sophomore down there in Denton and when you're looking at Weewoo it's like all right he's athletic he's tough and physical he's versatile he's got great character. I really like this profile and so now I don't think that he's a like a pro bowl level starter but we're talking about probably a mid-round type you know round four round five you know something in that range and if he can develop into a solid starter I think that that's outstanding value he's in my top 60 for that reason like this is the guy that I think you know four or five years from now we're talking about him as a starting offensive lineman in the NFL and you're getting him most likely on day three like I haven't heard really much about him going on day two of the drafts so yeah I like I like Fibachi Weewoo he's a guy that I think probably play you play that center is probably his best spot but again has played some guard over the course of his career as well and he's got the size to be able to do it in the NFL like 6'4 319 so I think he could play either spot. Definitely on the all-name team I love that Hogue just went Weewoo out of nowhere it's a good job by Hogue. Again the only reason I knew how to pronounce it was because of Brian Strafkatt which you can get it you know by becoming a diehard use that code JAHNS I'm just gonna keep on hammering that by the way Fran's gonna give us some extra diehard time specifically for you we'll be announcing those exact times coming up we'll do that I guess on Monday show or maybe we can do it later today show I'm saying that because I don't exactly know the time right now I should have had that but anyway it's gonna be some really cool stuff with Fran for diehards coming up as we get closer and closer. It's on Wednesday though next week. Wednesday next week it will be doing it for those of you who are diehards in our discord channel after the show it's gonna be sweet and we'll have Fran on before that as well so they'll be reminders. You know how I knew that? How'd you know that Adam? Because we promoted on the show yesterday that you were on. Yeah I know I know we did I absolutely know we did but you know there's a lot going on here Hogue we lost the compics. You're struggling today. It's an off you know it's a it's a it's a Fran who would you have drafted around 100 with that extra compic? We're the bears missing out on. Let me get my in a little bit more. Let me get my safety question out here. What are you hearing Fran around the safeties and is anything along those lines like surprising to do you think that you don't you've got the in them and you know lower than some people do do you think he's there at 25 and if you know is there anything around anywhere I guess in the draft that you're hearing that would line up like I don't really believe that that that that people are evaluating it that way but that's the way it seems like the NFL seeing guys. Yeah I think that if we were to do the game of like breaking players into tears of like almost definitely definitely won't be there probably not there could be there almost certainly will be there I would say Theanamin could be there for the Bears of 25 I think Emmanuel McNeil-Warn is likely there for the Bears of 25 and then obviously Caleb Downs definitely not there for the Bears of 25 so that's kind of how I break those three first round safeties down I think McNeil-Warn you know he was he was my pick for the Bears back in January my first mock draft that I did you know I do like the fit there I think it would make a lot of sense I think that Theanamin certainly would make a lot of sense like I said you know there's been a ton of buzz to him going to the NFC or the NFC North and ending up with Minnesota I am always a little bit cautious of the picks outside of say the top 15 that have become like the consensus chic picks amongst all the A&E analysts you know last year I remember that was Jihad Campbell going to the Bucks like every mock draft had Jihad Campbell going to the Bucks very rarely does that pick actually come to a head right so you know I don't know that Theanamin is going to end up in Minnesota but I do think he's a good player he's certainly one of the best defensive players in this draft and so you know could he be available for the Bears absolutely just because safeties typically go a little bit later than what we project I think he'd be a good fit I think it would make a lot of sense for Dennis Allen and for the Bears. All right I know Stephen had a few questions too to pop in here so instead of me just you know reading them to you he should pop in here and ask him himself. So Fran I've seen a lot of mock drafts lately there's been some players that are falling down to draft boards that were previously and like the high teams like Keldrick Faulk and Peter Woods is there is there a guy that if the Bears if he starts slipping that you'd go trade up for just to make sure you get him because he wasn't supposed to be still available at that point. You know I think in this draft that is the only path where I see trades happening right is when because a lot of what happens is when we talk about draft like oh it's a weak draft so people aren't gonna be trading up well it's a weak draft by our view on the outside consensus wise but every team is gonna have their own board and because yeah like the talent pool is a little bit streamlined every team might have like the tiers broken up differently so let's say for instance like if you're going off my board like I would view Keldrick Faulk as one of those guys like yeah if Keldrick Faulk's flying flying down the board I'm gonna trade up for that because he's a different tier player than a lot of the other guys that we would have a shot at and so I think that's the that's the situation that we'd be painting here for the Bears trying to make a move up. Yeah I think that Faulk would make a ton of sense for the Chicago Bears and if you were to make if you were to start getting into that range I think it would make sense I think that when you're looking at Peter Woods he would certainly make sense and yeah it does seem like a lot of these mocks are starting to have those guys fall. What I would say though is that I remember there was a similar conversation last year Michael Williams the past rusher from Georgia who was literally first week of April last year I remember going on shows and everyone's like oh like it feels like Michael Williams could be falling into a lot of stages around one I'm like let's let the dust set a little bit and it was by the time we got to the top 15 and he ended up going for the draft it was like oh yeah he's going to on top 15 and he ended up going in the top 15 to the 49ers I think it was at 11 you know so I think that we'll let the dust settle a little bit with this but I think when you're looking at Woods and you're looking at Faulk those would be two guys yeah I would be interested in trying to make a move for those two guys if they were starting to tumble down outside of the top 20. Woods has been mocked the Bears a bunch too let's go back to Bochand's comment Stephen if I can just to get Fran's thought on that he's saying if the Bears 25 he would love Genesis Smith and or Bud Clark at 60. Bochand has never been wrong about anything here France I'm wondering if you agree with that consensus that the Bochand and thought. Yeah they are honestly they are very like even though they technically play like the same position as like a deep safety they're like polar opposite players right where Genesis Smith he is all traits and it's like oh man like if this guy puts it together he is going to be a dynamite player whereas Bud Clark he is like toughness instincts ball skills and I worry about the traits he's not the biggest he's not the fastest on tape and so I kind of worry about like you know the overall upside there with Bud Clark if Genesis Smith were a tougher more physical player a more instinctive player he would be in the he'd be like that he'd be a first or second round pick like he is like like that kind of talent I just I struggled with him man like oh there are three Arizona like DBS like technically like safety is in this class and Genesis is my least favorite of the three just because of those questions and I place a lot of value on those traits that the toughness instincts aspect of defensive back play and so I struggle with Genesis Smith in that way so you could you could sell me a little bit more on bud Clark and I think that he does kind of fit their ethos a little bit when you're talking about like the competitiveness aspect of things he's a guy he was I remember talking with him at the combine and he said the trash talk is an art form and he's very very fluent in that a little bit of CJ DJ vibes with with with bud Clark and so I think that Dennis Allen could find some appreciation there. Bren is Cincinnati linebacker Jake Goldie a guy that's just going completely overlooked in drafts I just look at his size and his instincts and he piled up over 100 tackles last year and I think this is a guy that should be going higher at least be getting mocked higher than he is right now. Yeah the big thing that I struggle with with Goldie is that you know he began his career at Central Arkansas as a pass rusher then transferred up to Cincinnati and he's been kind of like an overhang like do everything like a big slot player like playing out in space so often so now projecting into linebacker I'm like yeah he hasn't done that a lot like in terms of playing the linebacker spot and so I do think that's why he's not going as high as what his traits in production might point to we've seen some players in that role come into the NFL and adapt well we've seen some guys come into that radio playing that role in college and come to league and never really hit the ground at all around and so you know that that's a every team you know meeting with him and getting an understanding like is this guy going to be able to grasp playing the position he's got all the tools to do it but it will it is a projection and that's going to be the concern. All right one more and then we'll go rapid fire but you know Fran I think we learned from the Bears Moves and Free Agency at the safety position that they are really going to be valuing guys that can play both spots that can be a little bit more interchangeable between the two safety positions they obviously signed a guy called Brian who can do that who are the safeties that could be available to the Bears that you you know whether it's the first round and second round whatever that you really feel like fit that mold the best. Well Theamon and McNeil Warren I think have interchangeable skill sets I'm just going through the draft guide here I've got safety filtered out so both those guys in round one I think you could say that you would check that box I think AJ Halsey he's 215 pounds safety from LSU but he's got great instinct and honestly my comparison for him is Kevin Byrd so we know that skill set can play in this scheme. I think you look at Bud Clark despite the smaller size like I think that he's got the toughness and the physicality to have that interchangeable skill set I think Michael Taft same deal out of Texas. This is a good safety class like this is a legitimately good group and so when I look at I think the Bears are going to have options you know so now you get you get into the all right well if we do we take this guy in round one or can we wait and get Halsey on the in the third round or wait until day three and you know that and we were talking like Jacobi Thomas and Dalton Johnson and you know Kamari Ramsey like it's a it's a good safety class so you know thankfully for the Bears they're going to have options. All right we'll get to rapid fire in one split second here but I hear that Kate and Proctor is falling Fran you've got him 11. If he's at 25 is that a no-brainer for the Bears? I don't know there's there's some buzz out there that he could go he could go that high so there that's he is he is a very tricky guy to place Carm because the talent in the upside and the profile point to a guy that you know couldn't should go high but obviously it's been a little bit volatile in terms of the film especially early this season so if he were to fall to the Bears yeah like I to me like he fits the profile of a player that I would target I would I would be fine taking that swing at 25 overall. Fran is there a blocking tight end in the late rounds of the draft that could fill that Durham's smithereld the Bears now lost because to me this is one of the deeper tight end drafts I've seen. No question it's full of players that are like prototypical tight end two tight end three you know like I don't know that there's going to be you know more than two taken in the first two days but then we get into like you know we'll say like late third round through the fourth fifth round and it's just gonna it's gonna be record numbers you know at that point in the draft and so in terms of guys that I think are good blockers yeah Will Kazmarek from Ohio State it's probably you know stands out most I would say Oscar Delp is a solid blocker Max Clair is a solid blocker he's you know probably more pass catcher than blocker but Nate Borkercher from Texas A&M he fits the bill the guy that he's just kind of like out of nowhere like in terms of you know like he's high on my board but here you're not going to see him on any other board and I just think he could be a literally like a dominant point of attack player in the NFL is the kid from NC State that you know Justin Jolie on one side but then when you have this other kid I really really love what I saw on film from Cody Hardy who is six foot four 267 pounds began his career Elon and transferred up and this is a dominant blocker and I think you know again he's gonna he's a top he's just inside my top 100 but again when I do my board it's based off future projection and I think that this is a guy that can turn into a dominant point of attack player you know you think of like Josh Oliver's turn into a dominant blocker like a lot of these guys you know we're late round picks undrafted free agents that turn into that role and I think Hardy is that guy all right let's go rapid fire we got a bunch of uh one of the many benefits of being a diehard he's came from the discord this morning I yell a lot in all caps of course asking Kayla Banks was mocked early by the bears but with him re-injuring his foot that seems to have cooled off where do you see him being taken at this point in the draft I think round one is unlikely I think that getting to the end of could he be there for the Bears the end of round two it's possible it's possible but I think it's more likely that he goes off the board somewhere in like the the 40s and 50s all right next up we got red nose reindeer which center in the draft fits the bears needs the best and what round would you take them I really like that there's honestly there's a few centers that are like that that drew Domen mold I know that a couple of them like I got Connor Lou the center from Auburn I compared to drew Domen last summer and so you know he's got coming off a torn ACL would have gone higher how do you stay healthy this year really athletic slightly undersized but really athletic does all those things that drew Domen does well I would say you look at Logan Jones the center from Iowa I think that he checks a lot of those boxes so those would be the two guys that stand out most there you get into day three I mean we talked about Fibetchi we will already so I think that he kind of fits as well but I would say you get into day three and you know maybe you look at Sam Hecht from Kansas State not quite as athletic as the other guys but the ones that stand out would be Connor Lou and Logan Jones. Alright let's get three and four in here big Apple Bears fan this dude gets it done is there anyone the Bears can get at 25 that could start week one come on big Apple of course there is but Fran who do you like is at that spot that you think can start week one. I think one of the safeties come in compete right away I mean right you guys tell me like it's in terms of wide open right now in the depth. Yeah I would look at that and say all right if you if you take Athena Minner McNeil Warren my expectation would be those guys are coming in competing for starting snaps right away. Honestly I think a second or third round safety is in that conversation too. It's wide open on that Bears depth chart and I feel like they're going to remember Joaquin Briscoe did that even when they took him in the second round he was put right in there. I mean you're talking best player available they take a corner there I would think that he'd have a chance to do it if they take if they take an offensive tackle you know that he'd have a chance to do it and certainly somebody up front. All right let's let's go to Gary Ross Gary. Who is one play you think will be drafted a lot higher than the rest of the league thinks putting you in going against the expert speculation mock draft corner here Fran what do you got? It's a good question. It's a good question. I mean we talked about Proctor already I'm just kind of looking through my board here. D'Angelo Pons is a guy that corner from Indiana and I know I'm barking up the right tree there with Gary. I would say D'Angelo Pons. I mean he's inside my top 25. I love D'Angelo Pons. He's one of my favorite players in draft. Devin Moore the corner from Florida is another one where I look at and I'm like you know what he didn't test the way I expected he's got an injury history but when you look at at that position which is a blue chip premium position guys that are built that way that move the way he does on tape like there aren't a lot of corners in this draft I think you can leave out on an island and say like yep go to work and Devin Moore is one of them so you know to me like he would be a guy that maybe isn't being talked about as a top 50 pick but he's got a top 50 skill set. All right let's do a couple more here. Jake drafting cornerback earlier later where is the better value or which positions have the greatest flexibility in this draft class. So I would say there are a number of corners in this class I think when you get into like round two round three round four that really fit what we've seen from the Bears in the last couple of years. You look at you know what they lost in free agency and the guys that were productive for them a year ago and you know yeah like the Washington corners and I mentioned the Arkansas kid Julie Neal. I mentioned Devin Moore like you know long with ball skills take the ball away. You know I think that there are there are options now don't wait too long because it dries up quickly. There are there are I don't love the corner depth in this class when you get into the you know round five round six round seven it dries up really quickly compared to previous years but that would be a position like I mentioned tight end extremely deep. It's going to be a record number of tight ends that get taken. I think safety is really deep. I think pass rushers are a really solid group wide receiver solid again. So those would probably be I would say the deepest positions running back is not is not good at all this year in terms of depth. You're not getting a Kevin Mononga Kyle Mononga in the seventh round this year. You know I would say that those would be the positions to look at. All right. Let's get game of Jones in here one of my guys. Of course I had to pick one where he's got a max iron anchor. I hear hot he an anchor. Let's go to the draft guy. Let's go to the draft guy. He's got to throw Max. What do you think of Max? He honnichore Max he honnichore. You're always there. Carm. He honnichore. He honnichore. He's only played right tackle. Here's the thing. He's only been playing football for four years. So it's not like oh man I've been playing right tackle my whole life. That's all I can do. So really it comes down to like the meetings that you have with the player and the understanding like it could he move over to left tackle. Now in the senior ball he didn't do any of that. He only stayed at right tackle. So my guess is that teams are only going to view him as a right tackle only and he's a little bit developmental. So you know patients may be required there. Maybe he doesn't start right away. So I would be a little bit cautious about trying to move him over to the left side. It would be my that might that's my gut. Fran amazing stuff. Are we done here? Any more rapids? That's just four years. I mean you hear about these guys that sometimes start playing late in high school and things like that. He's the he's the Jake Paul of offensive linemen slash I watched the documentary last night. Fran I got one more for you. Who got a better haircut? Carm or Hogue. If you had to break this down right now we both we you know I went to midtown got my get Sheena got after it today. Hogue I got I got a cut today too. Some people think that I'm trying to get a haircut like Hogue. I take offense to that. So I'm curious your your breakdown here. What do you think? I don't want to influence this at all but I would like to point out to be very careful with your answer here because Marcus who cuts my hair over a lifetime is a diehard who watches the show constantly. A lot of commentary for me today about the shenanigans that happened while I was on vacation. And while I don't know Sheena I'm just guessing that she's not tuning in to see a sheo bears every single day. She loves the show friend. And but more importantly John Brady over there loves the show. And so so it is that you you answer honestly though he'll he'll John will accept all answers. I would say that the fact that hoax is a little bit tighter. That speaks to me a little bit more. I usually go with a full number one on the sides and then you know scissors cut up top. So I'm going to go with Hogue here by the slightest of margins. You know I respect you. Leaning towards what you prefer. A friend. Carmi look great. Who would you root for in that one? Probably Illinois. Okay. I hope that, uh, I don't know. I love Illinois to answer my own question. I think I think the Atlanta won in tomorrow and I also, I, I'm picking Michigan too. All right. Let's do a little rivalry here, Hoge, to, to, to end up a Friday. Let's send you into the weekend hating Green Bay. You want to, uh, you want to take us through the, the, the experience that you had out in the desert as far as the rivalry was concerned with, with the people you were talking to. So look, I just, I have people that both fans sometimes, but also other media members and even some people around the league. Um, I would say at this point, a very common question I get is what's up with Ben Johnson and Matt LaFleur. Like what, what exactly is, is going on there? Um, and this, this is how I would explain it. Um, when, and then this is how I do explain it when, when people ask me about it, like I just feel like the angst, like the actual real, uh, perhaps hatred in this is 90% one way in the direction coming from Matt LaFleur to Ben Johnson. Um, I think Ben did a really good job of sparking the rivalry, saying the right things. I don't get the sense though, like deep down, he does not like Matt LaFleur. Now maybe some of the things that happened last year, the handshakes, the coldness, things like this, but I think it's, it's more like the more of the deep down, like I really cannot stand what's going on here is on Matt LaFleur side where he is, we've heard some of this publicly even, but a lot of this just going back a year ago was like, what? Like where, who is this guy? Why is this happening? Like why, why, why is he, why is he saying these things? Um, and I think that that has turned into him, you know, especially with the results last year and the Packers losing two out of three games in the way that they did. Um, very, like deep down wants to beat the Bears. And I, and I think that that's just, it's all great. It's a really, really good thing. So, you know, for Ben to have sparked this the way he has, I think is, is, is fun. I think it's good for the rivalry. I think it is very, very real. It's gotten to the point. We spent so many years talking about this car where we'd be like, you know, there's players involved in this game. They don't, why would they care that much? They haven't, they haven't been involved in it. It hasn't been a rival. You got to start to have rivalry games and the players playing them to actually develop true hatred. That started to happen last year with the cheese graders and the way the games were played. And now this year, when they get back on that field, you know, they're not only going to have the coaching staffs trying to spark this up, but there's going to be, you know, real angst between the players too. So I just think it's in a really good spot going into 2026 and I'm excited for it. So you get a little confused, at least I do with, are they doing this because bears players, bears coaches, bears general managers, bears presidents are all trying to make the McCasky's happy because the McCasky's in the rivalry. It means a ton to George and company. So I don't think that's Ben's motivation at all. I think Ben, Ben's motivation and let's hear from Ryan polls on this when he was on a Hogan Johnson the other day. I think Ben's, there are coaches that have come in here and have tried to downplay it and because I think they're, they're worried about losing to Green Bay. Ben did the opposite. Ben realized that if they're going to win the North, you can't hide from the Packers. You have to, if you are going to be dominant in this division, you have to beat your division rival. And so you need to talk to talk, walk to talk, embrace it, not be scared and do it. And I thought Ryan polls at a great job on a Hogan Johns the other day explaining exactly what Ben Johnson did. I wanted to ask about having a head coach who embraces rivalry like, like Ben Johnson does. I just find that so unique, just not only buying into it, but encouraging. I don't want to say hatred, but back and forth. Like, what do you make of that as a former player and now someone in charge of a team? I think that's what you want to play for. I think you want to play for a guy that's not scared. I got that's aggressive. Some of that wants to compete. I think it raises the level of probably both organizations to be completely honest with you. We needed that. I think you needed a jump start because, you know, when I first got here, it was all about just getting beat by them a lot. And it was this mountain to climb and and Ben's like screw it. Like, we're going to take this head on and take this rivalry over and we're not going to be scared to talk about it. So I think that's what you need. And I think that's what you need to make a shift. So the way he approaches that really approaches every game that way to be completely honest with you, but a little bit more vocal about our rivalry. And I think it makes it exciting. I think it makes the NFL exciting. I think people want to see that. I'd be shocked if those games are in prime time and everyone wants to be tuned into that game. So I love it. It's one of the great things about Ben Johnson that whatever his motivation is, whether it's just like, this is reality, we have to beat him. He ain't afraid to put it out there. He's not shy away. He's not shy away from anything. But like, I get, I don't want to listen. It's equally important for them to beat Detroit. It's equally important for them. No, it's not. It is. No, it is. Yes, it is. Mathematically, no. Yes, it is. They're in the same division. Why is it? Why is it any different? Because the game matters more. No. Are you going to make the same argument that it matters the same to Michigan and Ohio State that to beat the, that those I don't win versus clean Illinois. I don't care if it matters more to the fan base. That's irrelevant. I'm talking about winning the division to win the Super Bowl. You have to beat the teams in your division. God bless the guy in the last row who has Packer urinals in his house and would never eat a Green Bay hot dog at a stadium or go to Green Bay or whatever. Like all that's great. But that's not go that route with you. Who's been the most dominant team in the division then over the last three decades? But who's most recently the Packers have been a creep into the playoff team. You have to climb the mountain and get past Detroit. You got a Minnesota Detroit won 15 games last year or two years ago, 14 Minnesota before that you have to beat the teams in your division period and the story. But you're totally missing this because the Bears have beaten those teams and they hadn't beaten the Packers. So if you're taking the job, you have to identify the thing, the mountain that has been the toughest to climb and that starts with beating Green Bay. Okay. That sets the tone for everything. If you can get over that hill and conquer that demon, then you can handle the rest of the division. Okay. I'm old enough to remember when Green Bay was at the bottom of the division before Brett Farr and Aaron Rodgers showed up. All right. So and so was Tampa Bay. If we're going all the way back in the thing, you have to beat the top of the division, whoever that is. If it's the Packers, it's the Packers. You're trying to, you have to win the division, which everybody knows you're in the playoffs. You have to win your division. How do you win your division? You beat the teams in your division. So I mean, I don't know. The problem is they haven't beaten the Packers. I got it. I got so it matters more to get by that. The past is irrelevant. It doesn't matter. You just brought up the 60s. But Hogue, next year, how they do it, the division matters and how they do it in the division is reliant on beating Green Bay, Minnesota and Detroit. This idiot needs to go back to doing whatever he wants to do with his family on his off day. I'm talking about logic. I get I get the red meat of beating Green Bay. I love that that Ben has made this thing. I love that DJ Moore last year was saying at the Packers. I love that rivalries are great, but the only reason why it's a rivalry now is because the Bears are good again. It hasn't been a rivalry. It just sucked. They were five and 25 against them. That's that rivalry. It's a bloodbath. I love the fact that George McCasky was honest about it for 30 years. You're making an argument for me. What's that? You are. You're making the argument for me. It was a bloodbath. They had to turn it around. I'm not. I'm not. I'm not. I'm not making that argument. I make I make. Okay. What were the two biggest wins the Bears had last year in the division? Yes, but that's because Green Bay was competitive with the Bears last year. It was it was a fight for they were at the top of the division. That was last year. If Green Bay goes to the bottom of the division, Hogue and Detroit's at the top and they're playing the Lions and it's week 14 and the Bears are whatever they have the identical records, which game is bigger when they play the Packers the next week? If they're four and seven or the game against Detroit when they're both tied for the record at the top of the division, which game is more important? If they play, yes, if they play the Vikings or the Lions for the division and week 18, that game is the most important game. They okay. That's all I'm saying is that so in a very specific no, it's not specific. It's not. It isn't. It isn't. It isn't. It is. All right. You're just talking in circles here. If you're trying to make up some weird argument that the the the Lions and Packers games matter more than the Lions. I'm not. I'm not. Not more. That's equal equal equal equal. I'm I'm I'm setting a big I'm setting the flag out here. You're setting a you've got Grover flag. You've got a Grover flag. You I'm I'm grovering you. You've been grovered. Does that mean? RIP love you less. You're the man. Man. It it it. You need to get out of the small man mindset. I know that's impossible for this guy become a diar to whatnot. It's it's about the biggest goals, man. When the whole thing, when the division beat everybody, which by the way, Ben's doing. So I think I made a point that no one's going to appreciate, but I glad that I made it. Cheers to me. Thank you very much. Right. Cause you didn't that's not what bed was doing. Ben came in here said beat the Packers, win the division, win the Super Bowl. You know who also did that? Lovey Smith, the last coach that took the Bears with Super Bowl. All right. I'm sorry. I think it's just really dumb. I get like cool. I don't care if we if we make the play as long as we beat cream, babe. No, I don't care. No one's saying that people say it all the time. They say what we're saying on this show. Don't straw man this thing into something different. I also wanted to play with George McCasky had to say about what George, what Ben Johnson has infused into this rivalry. So before we get out of here, here is the chairman Packers element of it. It sure feels like the rivalry is back. I mean, I grew up in the city. I've I've experienced it. Certainly experienced the the domination green Bay had recently. How much did you enjoy that this year? And not only just the wins, but also what your head coach infused back into the rivalry? Well, for 30 years, they've had the upper hand. So to see what appears to be finally a turning of the tide has been very rewarding. It's great rivalry. 100 years plus. And they have the three elements that I think are necessary for success. Outstanding general manager, outstanding head coach, outstanding quarterback. And we think we have those three ingredients outstanding general manager outstanding head coach outstanding quarterback. And I think it's gonna be a lot of fun to watch in the years to come. I think so too, because they're both good. And now it matters. Thank you. Which is the point. Okay. Greg says it still may as Hogle looks five years younger in these interviews two days back. It reversed right back. Those five years came right back. Okay. Just go back to having a day off over there. Take a day. Get ready for the next after dark, which I hear is a great show. Like I crushed it this week. Mark Grote loved after dark this week. I think I know that any rate. I got Hogan a weird pausing. Listen to me. Well, I just wondering what you're going to do next. I'm very, I think Steven's wondering too. I think we're all, is he, this is like one of those like choose your own adventure. So I'm terrified. Go ahead. Is he going to end the end the show, which after taking the beating, he just took that weird packer steak an hour, three minutes into this. Is he just going to call it a weekend? No show play the video or is he going to play the video or is he going to like try to keep arguing this or is he going to pivot? This is probably the most likely thing Carm would do is just, is he going to pivot to something completely irrelevant that has nothing to do with football at all just to send us all into the weekend on a weird note. Great. Play the video. Man, we're going for some kettlebell deadlifts straight into a box. Yep. Just get low. Yep. That's a one. That's what we all need to remember. Hogue. The athlete on this show is the 52 year old man is doing box jumps. If you're 53 year old is very appropriate. What were you wearing there? You got the tall orange high socks, the short short red shorts there. Those are phabletics shorts. Those are phabletics short shot of phabletics. That is a great orange sock in case a truck came to Halloween. Yeah. Those are bear socks. Adam, they represent the rivalry. They're very important. I would never wear green socks. I would never, I would never accept my shirt was green. That's what I was going to say. Was he wearing green in the video? It was a rival. It was a rivalry. It was a rivalry outfit. It was a rivalry. Thank you. I got to say that that jump was way more graceful than I would have imagined. So good for you. It looks incredibly unathletic. If I'm being honest, barely came off the ground. Come excuse me. Yeah, you heard me. Barely came off the ground. Meet me on the basketball court. Stephen, let me tell you something. Let's hear your Iowa college stories. Go ahead. Yeah. Well, I did take the we did go to the elite eight and I did beat Tim Dwight to the bucket and I was one of the most elite point guards in intramural basketball history at the University of Iowa. But what I'm going to tell you is you can't jump super high and you got to land it. You got it's a lengthy jump. It's not a high jump. So and I don't know. It was like 12 inches in front of you. Who are you? Hold up. We're going for some kettlebell deadlifts straight into a box. Just get low. Yep. That's a one. Do you hear that last part called a come on athlete. You said that not your trainer. No, he actually if I kept the video, he just laughed at these like you got nine more. I did. Okay. He goes, that's one video would be way better if he was like that's 20. He goes, that's one. That's one. You got nine more loser. I did. If we could go all the way back to the start of the show because I saw it. Pizzatola had a great comment when Karm was struggling through Good Friday. Do you think he said something about it until Karm showed up? It was a good Friday. I'll hunt it down. Pizzy. Pizzy. Tola. You have a good weekend up there. Don't Claire. Talk about the rivalry. Walk out your door right now. Pizzatola and tell everybody that you're a bearish fan in Wisconsin. Be a man. Be a Pizzatola. You don't need to find that stupid ass Pizzatola comment. All right. All right. We're going to take a couple of days off for the weekend. You know what? You know, you know, Monday. Yeah. The, the, the, the, oh, that's fine. No, probably better for all. It's totally okay. You know, your best argument that you didn't make is that last season was a success because they beat Green Bay in the playoffs. It doesn't even matter they lost to the Rams. And then I would probably would have pushed back and said, yeah, I don't believe that though. That what exactly? That's why you didn't make that. I guess, but you could know, I would say, no, what I would say, what I did say is that it was a successful season because they started to turn the rivalry, but that does not make it a fully successful season because you don't win a Super Bowl beat the Packers win your division. They did those two goals, did not get the third one, which is a Super Bowl. Let me just ask you this. If, if, if those two games were against the Lions, if they had, if, if you had had the, the DJ catching the end zone, he went snow angel against Detroit and then they beat Detroit in the playoffs. Do you think the Bears would have had a great season? If they won the division, if they won the division, but they had done, but, but they had beaten Detroit in those two games. Would it still have been a great year? Would you still? Yeah, but it wouldn't have been as good. No, because they didn't. They, you're saying they lose two games to the Packers again. No, I'd say they, they split with the Packers like they, like they do with Detroit. She's just completely making up like a completely different scenario. There's nothing to do with what actually happened or what Ben Johnson's done to the rivalry, what's actually happening in real life right now that has a million people in the NFL asking Adam Hogue at the owners meetings. Hey, what's going on with that? Matt LaFleur, Ben Johnson thing. Okay. The whole league is taking notice of it and you're like, ah, this doesn't matter. I'm not saying it doesn't matter. I'm just saying, of course it matters. It matters more. In fact, the biggest example why it matters more is they lost to, they got swept by the Lions last year and that didn't matter. They still won the division because they, right, but what, okay, I got, it's, it's time for the weekend. It's going to bother me for at least three hours into my afternoon. So just know that you have impacted my Friday afternoon. What matters is they're good. They have a quarterback. They have a head coach that's not an idiot. That's what matters. You know, there's a lot of Kevin Warren talk this week. Hey, Kevin, phenomenal job getting Ben Johnson here. You saved the franchise. I don't care how long the stadium takes. Make it take, you could go, go search out another site in Botswana. You got Ben Johnson here. The team's good. Caleb Williams is the quarterback. You're, you're, I could care less how long the stadium takes playing soldier field till 42048. Thank you because they're good. All right. I'll end the show. Hope everybody enjoys the weekend.
