This is Hawaii News Now Sunrise at 5. Right now in Sunrise is a big hit to the local tourism industry as the PGA pulls out of Hawaii. The economic shortfall the state now faces. Plus the passing of Hawaii's longest serving governor. Here his son's final words to Governor George Ariyoshi. Tomorrow is Earth Day. Going to take a look at how some hotels and destinations are centering themselves around sustainability. Going to give you a whole new perspective on things. A whole new? All right. Let's check it with our first alert weather and traffic team. Good morning, guys. Please take it away. Hey, good morning. Right now, our flow map is looking very nice and green, but we do have road closures due to a water main break. But before I touch on that, how's the weather looking, Guy? Fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. We have the late wind weather pattern going to continue. It might be a little bit sticky at times, but overall rainfall will be minimal. This morning, we got some rain over on the corner side. Otherwise, it's fairly dry. And that's the hallmark of a light wind weather pattern, clearing skies in the overnight and early morning hours with not much rain out there. The Molokai Red are still out of commission. So we're not getting a true picture of the rain for a central part of the islands. And like I said, there's some lingering showers over in the corner side up towards Waikoloa. But for the most part, those showers are going to be dissipating. And these winds will run slow, right? They'll be coming in from all over the compass later on this morning. But as the day progresses, because of those light winds, all the sunshine that we get early will turn to cloudy skies in the afternoon. And those clouds could spawn a few spotty showers. There's a chance even for some brief downpours, but widespread rain not expected. And this is what we're going to see tomorrow as well. Back to you, Jelani. As mentioned, there is some first alert traffic for you this morning out of Pearl City. This is a scene on Kuala Street near Kamehameha Highway where crews are working on a broken water main. This is fronting the Pearl Highland Center. Koala is currently closed after the Acacia intersection, while the 12-inch main is repaired. Now, as far as the rest of Oahu, if you are heading out of the west side, not yet seeing major slowdowns along Farrington Highway through Ma'ili, Nanakuli, and then no troubles getting onto the H1 freeway once you reach Makakilo. It is going to be a 48-minute drive from Waianna into town, 27 minutes out of Kapolei. Fort Weaver Road still looking very nice and green as you are heading out of Ewa Beach and making your way onto the H1 freeway. It is a 33-minute commute from Ewa Beach into town, and then no slowdowns through Kunio, Waipahu, and as you make your way through the H1-H2 merge. That's your first alert traffic on Sunrise. Steve, great. Back to you. All right, thanks, Jelani. For the first time in nearly six decades, there will be no PGA golf tournaments in Hawaii in the coming year. Yeah, the tour announced the Century at Kapalua and the Sony Open at Waialae are off the 2027 schedule. Now, the Century, usually held in January over on Maui, was canceled this year, as you know, due to ongoing drought conditions. But the Sony Open did go on as scheduled in Kahala. The PGA said that the cancellations are part of a scheduled overhaul for the tour. Hawaii tourism leaders say that both tournaments together brought in a combined $90 million in revenue. That's what you have. You have corporate sponsors coming out. You have folks who follow the PGA Tour. You know, they stay longer. They're high-end visitors who shop at retail, major restaurants, what have you. So it's a kind of visitor that's very attractive to Hawaii. More than 16,000 out-of-state visitors attend the Sony Open in January, generating $54 million in economic impact. The PGA does say that talks are underway to convert the Sony Open into a PGA Tour Champions event. Those events are open to players 50 and above. That would create a two-event swing for the tour along with the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai. We'll have more coming up later in sports. Lieutenant Governor, Sylvia Luke's decision not to run for re-election may give Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami a clean shot of the nomination. Luke announced on Sunday that she wanted to spare her family from the controversy over unreported donations to her campaign years ago. But analysts say that Kawakami's entry into this race last month was a major factor because he is backed by a political action committee that's already sponsored nearly $200,000 in TV ads alone. That could also scare off any other challengers. No matter who enters the race, I think that right now it's very easy to say that Kawakami is a clear favorite. I mean, if we really break it down, super PACs, dark money, this is probably the most abusive form of political bullying and intimidation that you can experience. The Political Action Committee, formed by the Carpenters Union, says it is legally supporting Kawakami because of his record. The White House announced her departure as a return to the private sector. Chavez was accused of having an affair with her security detail and with letting both her husband and her father treat office aides as personal staff. Some aides quit over it. Her husband was actually banned from the building after two women complained of inappropriate touching. Three Trump Cabinet secretaries have left in recent weeks, Chavez, Homeland's Kristi Noem and Attorney General Pam Bondi. Homeland Security has been quietly briefing airport officials on plans to privatize TSA screening, and not just at small airports. A briefing document apparently accidentally left behind at Orlando Airport describes a program called TSA Gold Plus as a public-private partnership to so swell that travelers will, quote, enjoy a smooth, predictable and bespoke experience. The man who showed the document to Federal News Network said screeners deserve to know what's planned. On Wall Street, not a lot of movement this morning. The Dow is down, but only down 10 to 20 points. All right. Thank you, Hart. Well, tomorrow is Earth Day, and while we are all asked to do our part, so are big businesses. Yeah, we're going to look at what those in the travel and hotel industries are doing. But first, good morning, Casey. Man, good morning. I didn't even know what tomorrow was Earth Day. No, I did. That's why I picked this three. We're talking about a rare happening here at Foster Botanical Garden. The corpse plant, the corpse flower, they're set to bloom possibly sometime this week. But, you know, hard to predict. Very rare. We're going to talk all about it and a lot of the fun stuff they have coming up this spring and summer. First, though, let's check in with Guy Hagee. Yeah, let's check in on Kilauea. Actually, they had a little overflow of lava from the north vent last night about 745. You can see it's kind of ended now. There is a slight glow. But keep in mind that the next lava fountaining is expected to start sometime today through Sunday. So we'll keep an eye on it for you. But for right now, just fog is coming out. And with the light winds, that'll likely be an issue for parts of Hawaii Island, maybe even parts of Maui County. We'll be right back with more Sunrise. Don't go away. Skyline saves you money. Whether you're skipping the pump, saving on parking, or even going from two cars down to one, Skyline is the most cost-effective way to commute. Trains arrive every 10 minutes to new stations at Pearl Harbor, the airport, and all the way to Middle Street. Skyline puts real money back in your pocket. Skyline. Always on time. Now, first alert weather with Guy Hug. All right, out in the ocean, we're expecting a nice moderate swell coming into north and west shores today. It's going to be building through the day, expected to peak by tomorrow. And with the light winds, conditions this morning will be very, very good, maybe a little bit of onshore sea breeze by the middle of the morning and then cleaning up again in the afternoon. So that swell will peak tomorrow. But there's another swell right behind it, not a big swell, but that's going to keep the action going below advisory levels. Now a bigger swell is going to come in. That one looks like maybe a week from today, so keep that in mind. So these are wave heights today, building in the afternoon, right, 3 to 5, 2, so nothing too big. But again, conditions will be very good this morning. Hopefully the swell arrives sooner than later to take advantage of those light winds. East shore is going to pick up by tomorrow. So this is what we're looking at today. Look at Michael Hull catching one of the bigger waves at the Alamona Bowl a while ago. So again, lots of sunshine today. The UV index is very high at 8. Load up on the sunblock and reapply Jolani Guy right now if you heading out of the North Shore no problems driving out of either Haleiwa or Huayalua Kaukonohua Road and Kamehameha Highway looking very nice and green And for those heading out of Wahua or Mirilani, no troubles getting onto the H2, looking really nice as you head south on the H2, Kamehameha Highway and Kunia Road, not yet seeing major slowdowns at the H1-H2 merge. Remember, there are road closures over in Pearl City near the Pearl Highland Center as crews are working to respond to a water main. And this one is along Koala Street and Kamehameha Highway. Now, this is also a look at Kunia Interchange. Not yet seeing slowdowns there. There are some very minor delays getting onto the H1 out of Ewa Beach, but no issues along Farrington Highway as you drive through Waipahu. And then once you pass through the H1, H2 merge smooth sailing through Pearl City and Aiea. That's your first alert traffic on Sunrise. Steve Grace, back to you. All right, thanks, Jelani. Thanks, Sky. Happening today on Kauai, a chance to contribute to county planning on wildfire safety. A workshop is going to be held at Anaina Ho Park in Kilauea starting at 5.30 p.m. The county is looking for public input on preparedness and mitigation efforts. The event is going to be from 11 to 2 p.m. at the State Building on Alpune Street. A rare bloom that only happens every few years could be happening right here in Honolulu. If you've never seen or smelled the corpse flower, this could be your chance. Casey Landis live at the Foster Botanical Garden. All right, Casey, so it hasn't bloomed as it yet. It's like sitting next to Steve. Nothing could be that bad, Casey. Nothing. It doesn't stink. Yeah, it doesn't stink now. It doesn't stink now. I'm kidding, buddy. But when these things bloom, you know, it gets pretty powerful. And it's called the corpse plant for a reason. I'm here with Rob Hausman. He's a horticulturist at Foster Botanical Garden. Good morning. Thank you for being here. This is a beautiful plant and it's a very fascinating plant. This is one of probably a few that are in Hawaii. Yes, yes. We have about a dozen here. Yeah. So tell me, how do you kind of predict? And if we take a look at it right now, where things are, how do you kind of know where it's at and how do you kind of forecast whether or not it's going to bloom? So this sheath is falling off, as you can see in the back. That's a good sign that the bloom is on its way. It's had a few days of rapid growth, like four to five inches a day. That's crazy. And then it slows down to one to two inches, and then it usually will open up. And then speaking of open up, we have some images of, if you've never seen this, it's actually kind of a beautiful visual. This is, I think, 2024 or 2018, one of these previous blooms. And when it happens, can you describe the smell for people? I mean, it's a mix between Lindenberger cheese, rotten fish, and sweaty socks. Those are the chemical components. And we have some video because, you know, botanical gardens across the country, this is kind of a draw, you know, because it's such a kind of a phenomenon, a rare thing. It brings a lot of people in. And the gardens could always use people's support. I mean, we've been here in past blooms. It draws a crowd, right? Yes, definitely. Yeah, definitely. Really quickly before we go, and I know we're going to be here all morning, talking not only about the bloom here, but a lot of the other events that you guys have lined up. And there's a lot to talk about where we have the Twilight concert series that started, I believe, on June 4th. And then we're making, so it will lay for Memorial Day. Tell us about that. Yeah, we're going to try to make about 38,000 lay for that event. And there'll be opportunities for the public to give us a hand as well. Very good. And again, when, if people want to come and views, what would you say the best kind of time frame? I mean, I know it's not an exact science, but is it worse at night? Yeah, the peak stink is about 1 o'clock in the morning, and it's only going to last for about 24 hours. Okay, and by the way, follow at Honolulu Botanical Gardens on Instagram because you can help name the corpse plants. We're going to have some fun this morning, and they have all the details on all those events there as well. You can also go to the Department of Parks and Recreation's website at honolulu.gov. Let's check in with Howard Dykus for now. 516 is Tuesday on Sunrise on KGMB, KHNL, and K5. Still ahead, former airline execs to promote Hawaii tourism. Skyline saves you money. The roads are pretty dry out there, too, Guy. Yeah, and that's now, right? We could see some afternoon clouds and afternoon showers similar to what we saw yesterday, and the winds will run light. And it's because of the light winds we have that light wind weather pattern. And you can notice by Thursday, the trade-ins will start filling in. They won't be that strong, but they'll run at steady levels, say, through the middle of next week. So that means a very nice weather pattern is shaping up. Granted, light winds, slight chance for some afternoon pop-up showers, which is what Kona usually gets, and they'll see fewer showers, 10% for the rest of the forecast period. Really going to be a nice long run of dry weather, and we definitely need it. Even on Kauai, right, we will see some scattered showers kind of pick up over the weekend. This is for Lihue mainly, the east side, Kapa'a on holiday. We'll get those scattered showers. But if you're on the other side of the island, if you're in Hanapepe or Waimea, out towards Eleele, this is what you'll likely see. So leeward side is fairly dry. Windward side, a few more showers over the weekend when those trade winds start to increase. Jolani? Right now, drive times are just under 20 minutes for those heading out of east and windward Oahu.
