Rewatch! - The Pool

The Heelers family rewatches the Bluey episode 'The Pool,' discussing how poor planning and forgotten essentials initially prevented the kids from enjoying their day, but ultimately reinforced the lesson that responsible preparation enables fun rather than hindering it. The episode explores the dynamic between Bandit's fun-loving approach and Chili's practical responsibility, showing how both parenting styles are necessary and complementary.
Insights
- Responsibility and fun are not opposing forces; proper preparation (boring tasks like packing essentials) directly enables enjoyment and prevents frustration
- Children recognize and appreciate when parents maintain mutual respect and healthy dynamics, even when one parent is portrayed as 'boring' in playful contexts
- Parental improvisation and imagination work best when guided by clear scenarios or purposes rather than open-ended improvisation without direction
- Kids learn through experiencing natural consequences of poor planning rather than through lectures about responsibility

You guys sure are awesome. Thank you so much. Speaking of things that are awesome, we just got done rewatching The Pool. Hey squirts, Uncle Strats said we could use this pool while he's in Bali. Yeah. Henry, could you tell us what was going on at the beginning of this episode? At the beginning of the episode, Bluie being go on chili are all in one room because they're burning up and Bluie is talking to the fan asking chili what are we going to do today and chili tells Bluie that they're not going to do anything unless she cleans her teeth. Bluie says that she's so boring and then Bandit comes in and he says that Uncle Stripe said that they could use their pool while they're gone. Right. Bluie is talking into the fan so that she sounds like a robot. Have you ever done that? Yeah, I think I've done that multiple times. I think everybody's done that before. And Bluie's saying that brushing your teeth is boring makes chili say something about boring things. Stella, what did she tell her? She says that just because something's boring doesn't mean it can't be important. Right. Like brushing your teeth, that's important, isn't it? Yeah, it is. Did you guys notice at the very beginning, you know how each episode starts with a establishing shot of the house and then goes to the inside or whatever it is they're doing and we hear like a down version of the theme. It was like a surf guitar sound. I did not notice that. That's cool. Bandit said that Stripe is letting them use their pool while he is gone on a trip to someplace. Stella, where was it? Bali. Very good. That's right. They're trying to get out the door and chili is saying that they need to remember a bunch of stuff. Stella, what was she saying they needed to take? She said that they need to take the important stuff and not just the fun stuff. Right. Bluie had many things to say about this on the drive. Mom is such a fast forward, isn't she? She is. Mom always makes us do so many boring things. She does. That is way more fun. I am. Bandit was pretty brave with chili not in the car, wouldn't you say Amanda? Yeah, I think so. Well, I'm sure he was enjoying the accolades he was getting from Bluie. Bingo asked him a very important question though, Amanda. What was it? She was asking him what all these letters spelled. Yeah, just a random string of letters. Yes, just a a a a a. You, you, you, you. And she just kept going on and on. I remember doing that when I was a kid or I would scribble something on a piece of paper thinking that it would somehow make a word and ask my parents, what does this say? Yes, I remember that too. Bandit makes up a word that Bingo's letters spelled and it sure made her happy. When they get to Stripes House, they right away experience some issues. Amanda, how does that start out? Bandit gets out of the car and he's waiting for the girls to get out. We see Bandit has his flip flops on, so the sidewalk won't burn his feet. But Bluie doesn't seem to have her flip flops on. So the only thing that he can do is carry both of the girls at the same time back to the pool so they don't have to walk on the hot sidewalk and burn their little feet. Right. And what did he call their flip flops? I think he called them thongs. Yeah, thongs. Now, when I was a kid, that's what we called them. And apparently that's not a thing everywhere. And I was shocked to hear that people didn't call them that. Yeah, everybody calls them flip flops now. Yeah, but it's a reference to the part that goes between your toes. That's called a thong. Right. While Bandit's carrying everybody, Bingo is playing a game that isn't working out so great for Bandit. Henry, what is she doing? She is pretending to be a giraffe and she is eating the leaves. Yes, she's grabbing a hold of all of them and it's not only slowing Bandit down, but when they spring back, it's hitting him. I don't think he enjoyed that too much. He manages to get all the way to the gate and Bluie's hanging off of it. It was a pretty cool gate too. Everything was clear like it must have been acrylic or plexiglass or glass. But what did Bluie do? Bluie was hanging on the gate and then Bandit tried to open it. But since Bluie was hanging on the gate, her weight made the gate immediately close. Well, we can see we're off to a good start on this trip to the pool and I can totally relate. I've done things where I didn't plan well enough and didn't have the stuff that I needed when we got there right away. Bluie asked for something, Henry. What was it? Bluie asked for her rashie, which is like a swim shirt. And not only does she not have it to help keep the sun off ever, what else have they forgotten? They forgot the sunscreen. No sunscreen, no rashie. So far, they're not doing so well and Bandit tells them that they're going to have to stay in the shady bit because there's another thing they don't have. Stella, what was it? They don't have hats either. Yeah. Bluie jumps in, cannonball style and Bingo's ready to go but she sees something. Stella, what is happening? She sees the pool cleaner and she gets scared of it. Yeah, it's like a pool robot that crawls around and cleans the water. Yeah. She was not a fan. Would that have scared you when you were little? I don't know, honestly. Bingo's frustrated because she doesn't want to be near that thing and she asks if her dad brought something so that she can get in the pool and have fun. Stella, what was it that she was missing? She asked for her floaties but they did not have her floaties. No floaties, no rashie, no sunscreen, no hats. It's really starting to pile up. Bingo is disappointed to find out that she is going to have to stay on the shallow steps bit of the pool. She is not happy. Not only is that crawly thing out there bugging her but now she can't even get past the steps. Bluie asks her dad a question. Amanda, what was it? Bluie asks her dad if he thinks that she can swim all the way to the end of the pool and he said, yeah, I think you can do that kid but she said, no dad, you're supposed to pretend like you don't think that I can do it and so he said, oh yeah, yeah, yeah, there's no way anybody could swim that far and so she starts to swim but he has to stop her before she can get to the end of the pool because that is where the sun is shining towards the end of the pool and so she can't go that far just yet. Yeah, almost going to set a world record for swimming and denied. So close. Bandit jumps in and he has an awesome line. Once he's in the water, he's holding up a pool noodle for Bluie to jump over. Henry, what happens? Bluie keeps telling him to move it higher, higher and higher. He moves a little too high so she tells him to move it a little bit lower and then she jumps in and she comes back out and she says that her eyes are stinging and Bandit says, did you bring your goggles and Bluie says, no. With no goggles, she can't do another thing she was wanting to do. What was that? She won't be able to swim to the bottom of the pool so then she could get the sinkies. Yeah, but they didn't bring those either so I guess it really doesn't matter, does it? Now things are starting to get out of hand. No goggles, no sinkies, no sunscreen, no rashie. Bluie asks, is the shady bit going to get bigger the longer we stay or is it going to get shorter? Henry, what did Bandit say? Bandit said that it was going to get bigger, but then it started to grow smaller right as he said that and then later he says, I meant smaller. Well by now the girls are pretty frustrated with this whole ordeal. I'm bored. Hi, bored. Nice to meet you. I'm hungry. Oh, hello, hungry. This is bored. Tough crowd. Stella and Henry, I need to ask you guys something. How did you feel when you heard Bandit saying what is probably the most dad of dad jokes of all time? It reminded me of you a lot because you used to do that with us all the time. I used to get annoyed by it. I was like, dad, my name's not hungry. It's Henry. He still does it sometimes. Yeah, he does. Stella, have I ever one single time done that? You definitely have, yeah. Just one single time? No, more times than one. If you had to guess how many times, how many times would you say it was? Probably thousands or a million times. I can't deny that. That is probably accurate. It's probably millions. Yeah, she's probably not wrong. Now they're all hungry and there's no food and everybody has had it pretty much with this. Bandit gets out and because they don't have any towels, he goes to shake himself off. Did anybody notice anything about that in particular? That he shook like a dog? Right, but there was something else. I did notice that. Yeah, it was like the tag on a dog's collar, even though he's not wearing one. I'm like, oh my gosh, that's so funny because that's exactly what our dogs sound like whenever they try to shake themselves off if they've gotten wet. Bluey wants to dry off, but she doesn't have any towels. Stella, what does her dad tell her to do? He tells her to just shake off, but she has not learned how to yet. I thought it was so cute when she gave it a go. I love the way they animated it. It was such a little kid thing. Yeah, it was such a little kid thing. I remember when these kids would try to do something for the first time and they didn't quite get it just right, but it would be funny, like in a good way. Yeah, it's very cute. She sure did try though. Since 1989, Worldland Trust has ensured the protection of over 13,000 species around the world. That's music to Ahariz. Worldland Trust, saving land, saving species. Bingo is refusing to get out and has a grip on the bar and Bandit can't get her out of the pool. What is she doing, Amanda? Bandit is trying his hardest to get her out of the pool, but she keeps holding on saying, no, no, no, there's no way I'm getting out of this pool. But then suddenly we see her get out of that pool with no problem because here comes the pool cleaner. Yeah, she came flying out of there then. The girls have really changed their tune on how cool or not cool Bandit is. Okay, can everyone stop saying dad? I think dad is actually boring. Mom is way more fun. But just then, Henry, who comes to save the day? Chilly comes with all the pool stuff that they forgot. Yeah, and she was really good natured about it. I thought that she might give Bandit a hard time, but she was super cool. Yeah, I thought the same here. Now they're able to play all the fun pool games. We see Bluey getting the sinkies and Bingo swimming with her floaties on. Yeah, Bandit taking both the girls and doing the torpedo move, where he swims with them on him. One of the games they played, have you guys ever done this, the yell underwater to see if the person could tell what you were saying? Yeah, I've done that before. I've definitely done that. Has it worked? Have you ever been able to tell what somebody was saying? No, no, not really. What did Bingo think that Bluey was talking about Stella? Something about ballet class. Did Bluey say whether or not that was right? I don't think she did. I think she just laughed about it. While Bluey is underwater, she looks up and sees something very, very sweet. Amanda, what do we see? She sees Bandit and Chilly give a little smooch to each other. Yeah, they get close to each other and smooch. And it's a cool perspective because it's like the camera is underwater, looking straight up at them. It was really nice. And that was the episode. Henry, did we miss anything? Nope, I don't think so. Well, you know what it's time for. Did we learn anything today? Could anyone tell us what did you learn today? Well, I think we were supposed to learn today is that sometimes the boring stuff might be boring, but sometimes it will be very important, like brushing your teeth and bringing the important pool stuff to the pool. Okay. Yeah. Anybody else? I learned that moms are not always boring. I already knew that, though. You're awesome. Thank you. I think mom and Henry said it pretty well. I do think that the theme of being responsible doesn't necessarily mean that you're just ruining a good time. In this case, all they were thinking about was having fun, but forgetting the important stuff stopped them from having any fun. They couldn't do any of the stuff they wanted, all the stuff that they talked about that was boring. They missed out on doing any of the fun stuff because you need that. It's kind of like, oh man, now I'm an adult and I have to do all this stuff like pay bills and all that. If you don't do it, well, you don't have a place to sit and record a podcast. You don't have all of these other things. So the two things go together. Absolutely. One other thing I guess you could call it a lesson is that the girls know that Bandit is good-naturedly agreeing with them that, yeah, he's super awesome, fun, and mom's boring. They know that he doesn't really think poorly of chili. And I think that that's important when mom and dad like that have to be respectful to each other, because it would have been really easy for chili to just come in and go, well, well, well, look at this, but she didn't. And I thought all those things went together. They have a really healthy dynamic in front of the kids. And I thought it was nice too that Bluie didn't pretend like she was getting grossed out when she saw mom and dad smooch. Yeah, it seemed like she thought it was sweet. When she saw it. She's probably just so thankful mom showed up with the fun stuff. Mom for the win. Does anybody have any parting thoughts about the episode? Whenever I saw them swimming the pool, it made me think, man, I'd like to swim. I think this episode is really cute. And honestly, being able to swim around in a big pool like that seems really fun. I just thought the episode was cute, how it all worked out in the end, and they were all having a great time together. I think seeing them having fun together is one of the best parts of the show. They're such a cool little family unit and it reminds me of our family. Mom, dad, the two kids that are semi-close in age to each other and the dynamics that that creates. Yeah, I agree with you. It does. It reminds me of us too. Swimming around in a big pool does seem pretty sweet. And let's face it, it won't be too long from now before it's hot enough to go swimming. So yeah, we can probably do that sooner rather than later. Yeah. I'm curious as to what Stripe does for a living because boy, he's got a pretty sweet place happening there. That fence around the pool being all clear like that. I don't know. That seems pretty cool to me. Have you ever seen a thing like that? I have not. I have not. It was pretty cool though. I agree. Good on him. He's in Bali. I wonder if he's there for work or if they were on vacation because it could have been on a holiday because we didn't see the kids either or Trixie. Yeah, who knows? Hopefully it was a vacation. That would be more fun than work. I agree with that. Man, could you imagine taking a road trip with Muffin though? Yikes. That would really be something. Well, guys, we think Bluey is awesome. In speaking of things that we think are awesome, Henry, what should we do next? The howl outs. Okay, listen up. Everyone has to clap and go, woo, yeah, all right. That's awesome. Got it? Our fans are the best. We are so, so thankful for you guys. We love hearing from you. We sure do. We wouldn't do this show without you guys. And we're just so grateful for all the love that you send us and the five-star reviews. And you guys are amazing. Speaking of five-star reviews, we'll get to that in just a second. But first, let's take a look at the comments on Spotify. We heard from Sarah who likes the episode favorite thing because she's the older one in her family too. Party Capybara, Julia, Shaley, Vinnie, Darcy Lee, Sophie. We heard from someone whose username is Moonbrian, Harper, Gabriela, Alex, Alice, Ray, McKinley, someone whose username is I-S-I-M, something, something. Patrick, who asks about the upcoming Star Wars movie, yes, yes. I'm so excited for that movie. Daisy and Ivy. Oh, and by the way, speaking of Alex, you guys have got to go see his comments. You just got to go see them. I'm not going to tell you what they are. You got to go. We got some emails. We heard from Teddy who sent us a picture of his cool dinner with the healers t-shirt. Awesome. And we heard from Myra. And we also got a voice message from our friend, Brendan. Greetings, dinner with the healers. This is your friend, Brendan, speaking to you once again. So I have another bluey moment to share with you from the bluey episode, Driving. Driving along. Oh, it's Madge. Uh, is that enough driving? Um, yeah. Thanks, Mom. I'm sorry, Bluey. I'm not very good at this game. That's okay. I can play tea party with Agatha. It's just the driving around in circles. I think I'm better when I've got a purpose. Like doing things for people, you know? Okay. Hmm. Yeah, she was going to get a point there. In order to play the game driving, she needs to have an actual purpose on pretending to be a vehicle. That is a very good solid point there, Chilly. Very good solid point. All right. I will talk to you again soon. Bye-bye. Brendan, as always, it's great to hear from you. And thank you for sending us another great clip. I agree with you agreeing with Chilly. To play something like that, it is kind of hard to go along with it if you don't have a purpose. It would get pretty boring, I hate to say, because anytime you want to play with your kids, you want them to be having fun and you want them to see you having fun as well. So you really playing together, you got to have something you guys can kind of both get into. I think the trick here is, is the improvisation part. Chilly, that's not her wheelhouse. Yes. Like she has a great imagination and can have fun. But in this case, the idea is, is that she just improvises, oh, we're going here and we're doing this thing and da-da-da, but she's wanting more input from Bluie and let Bluie guide the scenario and the play. But with improvisation, you hand it off to each other and run with it. Yes. And it's easier for Chilly if somebody else is sort of laying out the scenario in front of her and she can operate inside the confines of that. Yeah, I agree. I totally get that. It can be tricky. Yes, it can. Thank you for the voice message, Brendan. It's always so awesome to hear from you. You guys have probably figured it out, but that is Brendan at the end of each episode after Henry says bye and you hear the once again. Brendan sang it like that in a voice message and I took it and I added two more notes of me singing with it to make it that big, huge vocal stinger right before the outro. Brendan, thank you for that. And thank you for being such a good sport about it. I love that. IDT, you're awesome, Brendan. We got some reviews on Apple Podcasts. I talk about this all the time and I'm going to talk about it again. There are reviews up in front of the most recent ones I saw that have dates that are older than when I looked at them last week. So thank you for that Apple Podcast. However, Amanda mentioned the five-star reviews. We have a surprising number of people whose reviews say how much they enjoy the podcast, yet somehow they're one star or three stars. What? If you do like the podcast and you leave a review, it would really help us out if you could click all five stars. Yes, please. It helps other people find the show and it makes us feel good about ourselves. And I'm not saying any of the names I'm getting ready to mention gave us less than five stars. I'm just saying if you've left us a review and you love the show, please make sure it's five stars. But we had a review from Faith, from Collier. That's a cool name. Someone whose username is BEGYEGE, something, something, something. And we heard from Pill. Guys, thank you for the five-star reviews. Thank you for the messages, the voice messages, the comments, the emails. They mean the world to us and we are always so, so happy to hear from you guys. We sure are always happy to hear from you guys. Thank you so much. We just appreciate you all so, so much. Well, guys, until next time, we are out of here. Bye, guys. Bye. Bye. Once again.
