Summary

The episode discusses President Trump's increasingly erratic social media posts about Iran, drawing parallels to warnings from historian Timothy Snyder about structural conditions for a military coup. The host analyzes Tucker Carlson's rare personal criticism of Trump and examines Defense Secretary Pete Hagseth's military leadership changes as potential indicators of authoritarian consolidation.

Insights
  • Military and intelligence community personnel are being positioned as critical actors who can refuse unlawful orders, regardless of presidential immunity protections
  • Historians and analysts view Trump's escalating rhetoric and military budget increases as part of a deliberate strategy to secure military loyalty for potential democratic subversion
  • Public vigilance and media accountability are framed as essential counterbalances to what scholars characterize as an emerging autocratic playbook with historical precedent
  • Defense leadership purges targeting diversity initiatives are interpreted as loyalty tests and ideological alignment measures rather than merit-based personnel decisions
  • Strange political alliances (e.g., Tucker Carlson with Democrats) may emerge around shared concerns about democratic institutions and constitutional governance

All right, the president of the United States is even crazier today than he was yesterday. He just posted this on his social media platform, LISocial. A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don't want that to happen, but it probably will. However, now that we have complete and total regime change, where different smarter and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen. Who knows? We will find out tonight. One of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the world. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death will finally end. God bless the people of Iran. A whole civilization will die. I mean, what are we talking about here? Are we talking about nukes? This is the president of the United States. And I don't know if you all saw our episode that dropped last night where he's talking about all sorts of crazy unhinged things. This man is in full blown dementia on top of his preexisting mental illness, on top of the fact that he's going to do every single thing in his power to stay in power. He doesn't care about the military. He doesn't care about the troops. And a lot of his most ardent supporters are noticing this. And Tucker Carlson, who I don't like, who I think is a total grifter con artist, he has always criticized Trump's policies, but rarely Trump personally. Here's a video from last night before the bonkers batshit post that I just read you that came out this morning that sounds like we're on the verge of apocalyptic nuclear war. This is Tucker Carlson last night specifically calling out Trump. Play the clip. That means because this is obvious to anyone who's paying any attention that if you work in the White House, we're in the US military. Now it's time to say no, absolutely not. And say directly to the president, no. In case you're thinking about using some weapon and mass destruction, it's the population of Iran in whose name we liberated Iran. We killed their religious leader for their benefit. Do you remember that? This was last month. Those people who are in direct contact with the president need to say no. I'll resign. I'll do whatever I can do legally to stop this because this is insane. And if given the order, I'm not carrying it out. Figure out the codes on the football yourself. Okay. So this sounds very, very familiar to the Democrats earlier this year that we're telling people in the military do not commit war crimes for this guy. He has immunity from the Supreme Court, but you do not. And he will throw you under the bus just like they took Pam Bondi's photo off the wall at DOJ and just tossed it right in the trash. He doesn't give a shit about the troops. He thinks they're suckers and losers. So here's the video from the Democrats warning us about this earlier this year. Speak directly to members of the military and the intelligence community who take risks each day to keep Americans safe. We know you are under enormous stress and pressure right now. Americans trust their military. But that trust is at risk. This administration is pitting our uniform military and intelligence community professionals against American citizens like us. You all swore an oath to protect and defend this Constitution. Right now, the threats to our Constitution aren't just coming from abroad, but from right here at home. Our laws are clear. You can refer. Okay. So then the Trump administration tried to get Pam Bondi, whose portrait is now in the trash can at DOJ, after covering up a child sex ring. And they just dumped her in the trash. They tried to charge these people with crimes. Senator Kelly, Representative Jason Crow. And this went in front of a grand jury. And everyday American citizens stood up for democracy and said no. And the thing about grand juries, you guys, is they're notoriously known for it. They would have died a ham sandwich. And everyday Americans are showing bravery and standing up to fascism. And Donald Trump has already, now he's got Tucker Carlson sounding like a Democrat here. And here's the problem. Trump has been such a blowhard and he has talked a big game his whole life. But now he's doing what scholars tell us is kind of an autocratic gamble. His popularity is going down and the risks he's taken are coming up. Historian Timothy Snyder is warning us that he is setting up the soil for a military coup of the United States of America. He has zero, zero intention of allowing free and fair elections. So how does he set this up? Pop this up, Kylie. Timothy Snyder says the next coup attempt. We are seven months away from the most consequential midterm election in the history of the United States. Meanwhile, we are fighting a war. These are the structural conditions for a coup attempt in which a president tries to nullify elections and take permanent power as a dictator. If we see this, we can stop it, overcome the movement that brought us to this point and make a turn towards something better. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State, I think it's supposed to be Secretary of Defense. Pete Hagseth are stuck in the logic of escalation according to which the feeling of defeat today can be reversed by doing the first thing that comes to mind tomorrow. Trump is surrounded by people who are making money from the war. Each day of war strengthens a war-mongering lobby with personal access to the president as the war lengthens the chance that it will be exploited for a coup attempt increases. These people who have made these predictions about Trump back when he was running against Kamala, back when after January 6th, every prediction these scholars have made about him has come true. Why? Because there's nothing original about any of this. This is a failed playbook. We're all living right in the middle of it. Here's some analysis on Snyder's piece from Bill Madden. Pop this up. Bill Madden says, I agree with renowned historian Timothy Snyder. Trump is going to stage a coup. As Snyder explains, Trump's proposed 50% defense budget increase should be seen as nothing short of a bribe to secure military loyalty for a coup attempt and that a staged domestic terror attack is Trump's best remaining path to nullifying elections. Texas recent firing of Army Chief of Staff Randy George is more evidence that the fascist authoritarian Trump regime is more interested in loyalty than competence. If the 79-year-old pedophile psychopath, way to go Bill Madden, love you for that, is to succeed in conning the US armed forces into supporting him in overthrowing American democracy and the Constitution. His only chance is to have quizlings and sycophants throughout the top brass in the military. What is Pete Hexeth doing right now? He's firing generals. He's been doing it since he got in there and he's talking about, I can't have a woke military. I can't have any black women promoted in the military. I can't have any gays in the military. I can't have women in combat. Black men are not going to get promoted. And what's a white Christian nationalist army? The stuff that's coming out of his mouth is insane. Trump is just a vehicle for the people who want to attain power in America, these tech oligarchs, Peter Thiel. They are playing a long-term game here and it doesn't take that much to push Trump. They're probably sitting at the table, hey, you don't want anybody to think you're a pussy, do you? You should nuke him. Okay? I mean, this is our country and this is our leader right now. It's insane. And just to give you a sense of how much Trump is planning to build up our nation's military, this reporting here is from Axios. Pop this up. Trump's proposed changes to cabinet, departments, budgets, defense. Look at that. And then the reductions, all of these things. And then you wonder, why do Republicans hate government so much? Because when they get in, they tear it down. They completely tear it down. So the core argument of Timothy's piece here is with midterm, seven months away, and the war ongoing, he sees structural conditions that are ripe for a coup attempt and urges people to recognize the warning signs in advance. As much to my surprise, Tucker Carlson is recognizing this. And I think as the president becomes more and more unhinged, and we know he has nukes, we're going to find ourselves with strange bedfellows to try to save democracy from Trump's incoming coup attempt. And Timothy Snyder's overall assessment is that Trump is actually in a weak position. His war polling, his bad military commanders do not trust him, and the scenarios are hard to execute. But the author warns, Timothy Snyder warns that public complacency is Trump's best asset. He can only succeed if we're caught off guard. The call to action here for everybody is journalists, judges, military personnel and citizens need to recognize these scripts as they unfold and we have to actively resist them. We're going to find ourselves with strange bedfellows these next few months. But the president of the United States is getting up every day and posting insane apocalyptic suggestive nuke style texts, nuke style posts on true social. And we're all living through this. And so it is going to take a vigilant public and a vigilant media space to report on this properly. Donald Trump is a war criminal. Donald Trump is a liar. But he is our president right now and we need to put pressure on everybody that can and everybody that will take an order from him not to comply. And we need to put pressure on everybody in Congress in the Senate to get this man out of office. He cannot help himself. He will not be able to help himself. He will continue this war to just for spite because his ego cannot take the fact that there would be a blue tsunami because that would be an indictment on him. He would rather go to nuclear war. All right, that's all we have. Like, subscribe. We'll be back later with more news. Thank you.
