Summary

The hosts analyze the 2026 NFL Draft quarterback class, rating it as weak at the top with limited franchise-caliber prospects. They discuss the Green Bay Packers' backup quarterback needs following Malik Willis's departure and evaluate potential draft targets and veteran options.

Insights
  • The 2026 QB class lacks elite ceiling prospects compared to recent years, with most top candidates grading as mid-first round or developmental backups rather than franchise cornerstones.
  • Green Bay's quarterback development system under Matt LaFleur has proven effective at turning raw talent into productive starters, as demonstrated by Malik Willis's success.
  • Backup quarterback stability is critical for contending teams—the Packers' reliance on Willis in 2024 highlights the risk of having an injury-prone starter without quality depth.
  • The Packers' historical approach of developing young quarterback prospects into trade assets or starters is more sustainable than paying premium veteran backup contracts.
  • Physical tools and athletic upside matter more than polish in this QB class, making developmental prospects like Cole Payton and Tailing Green more valuable than safer, experienced options.

Welcome back to the Daily Draft, bringing you today Jacob Morley. How are you, man? Good, man. I'm busy. We're at that point. This is every year we get to this point in the draft where it's like we're at the home stretch for the guide. It's pretty much done, but it's just like all the little things that you still have to do. It's kind of like if you've ever moved and you think you're done with all of your moving and then you got to go back and there's like, oh, there's just a couple more boxes. But then it's like 15 more boxes and you're just like, whew. So I'm at that point right now where it's like I'm thrilled with the work that we've done. I'm ready for you guys to see it, but I'm ready to just kind of sit back and enjoy the draft process knowing I don't have to create or write anything else or develop any more opinions on anything, you know? Unfortunately for you. We have positional previews for the daily draft to promote that guide. And this is the first one. So that's a tough look for you. But we're excited. I don't have to write anything. I'm just talking about everything we've already done. This is easy. This is the easy stuff. All right. So obviously the guys are super excited, Jacob. No. And this is kind of a warm up because we're doing quarterbacks. By and large, this has been a warm up our entire lives. Like, why would you talk about draft QBs? Right? Yeah. How many years of FAR and then they surprise take Rogers, how many years of Rogers and then they surprise take love as quarterbacks we've never really or as Packers fans, we had never really been grinding on quarterback tape. Just not just in the thing. Yeah. More in concept. Yeah. Right. Right. Right. All right. Let's let's hit a class overview here. I just my first know was it's not great. I do not have a particularly high grade on Mendoza. I I'm not like violently anti Mendoza. I would not be that excited if my team was going to make him, you know, the number one overall pick, all the things that come with that face of the franchise, you know, long term commitment, the number one overall pick still makes decent money too. So I'm not huge on on Mendoza. I think I have him as player 10 with just a mid first round grade. It's a higher grade than I gave like JJ McCarthy. But I mean, for me, the way I grade guys, if I give you a mid to late first round at QB, I'm saying there's still a decent chance that that it does not work because because that's that's how important the QB position is and the sliding scale of, you know, functional starting quarterback. That's a first round pick all day. But if that's all you have, then you have to build incredible things around him. I think, you know, by and large, who I ranked 40th, Ty Simpson is generally considered QB two. Then it's a lot of your own personal flavor. I think, you know, we're both Colp, Peyton guys, I know McShea is Colp, Peyton QB three. I think Matt Miller has Colp, Peyton QB three. I think Thorneistram has Colp, Peyton QB three. But but I'm not going to say that that's consensus because it's not the Nuss bus Garrett Nussmeyer. But just to give folks kind of a general. Did you see, you know, do you see him again had as QB three and his article with all his scout connections and stuff? I don't. I didn't. Okay. Yeah. Taylor Green. Yeah. And so that's gives you a little sneak peek of kind of how the NFL views these guys. And that could very much be a, they don't think it's very good either. And it was just a mixed bag of stuff. And like two guys said, Taylor, and so I guess he's QB two, you know, or three or whatever. So that's it. It is a freak though. And we'll talk about that in a second. So just kind of my view on the classic Carson Beck is QB five for me and he's overall rank 103 with a fourth round grade, meaning I don't believe that he can start in the NFL. So it ain't pretty if that's what you're, you know, this, you're not getting six quarterbacks in the top 12 or whatever happened that one year like that. That is just not this year. And I think it's kind of a forever conversation right next year's class. And do you think we get quarterbacks? Maybe. And I think it would be tie Simpson. I know there's been some tie Simpson Pittsburgh chatter. Um, Chase Daniel trying to really stir up the pot with a tie Simpson Minnesota chatter, which would just be an electric factory. If it, if it was tie and Kyler and JJ. I mean, and Carson, a lot of developing that needs to go on in that QB. Yeah. From a guy that doesn't really do that per se. Um, so yeah, that, that's my take was not great at the top or a top death. Uh, the, the lottery tickets as it were, I think in this class mentioned NDSU's Cole Payton, um, 99th percentile or 98th percentile with a razz. I think he could help you as a tight end or an H back or a special teams player. If I'm being serious, if it doesn't work out at quarterback, that gives them a little extra value for me. I think the same thing about tailing green. I think you can move him. If it doesn't work out at quarterback, I think he can help a team at a different position. And some of this stuff can just be like, taste some Hill stuff, but some of it can be legitimately trying a different position. And then I think you could fall in love with Drew Aller's arm talent. Like he just that dude with his arm. Now there's a lot of other things that, that bug folks about Drew Aller. Um, but yeah, those are kind of the, the lottery tickets. And then there's a lot of guys throughout these ranks that are just boring in that. It's just like, yeah, that's an NFL backup. Yeah. You know, these deficiencies here and there, like went, went, okay. So round five, like what do you, you know, developmental backup? What do you, what does that mean to you? Um, but man, you talk about guys who even in like their 80th or 90th percentile outcome, they're a top 15 quarterback in this league. I don't know. I don't know. Um, who are some of your favorite guys? I mean, I think when you talk about this class, like favorite is. Relative. That's a sliding scale. Yeah. So, I mean, you hit on some of them. Like I do like, I like Cole. That's probably just a lot of bias though too, just cause I've watched him develop at North Dakota State. I mean, we were, we were at a game that that was one of, I think I was shooting that game and it was when he was a freshman and I was just standing kind on the sidelines as they were warming up. And I think I just texted you, this is back when he was number 15. And I was like, who the F is 15. Because I mean, he's in, I mean, he's a very impressive athlete and he has been since the moment he stepped onto a college campus. Um, but other guys, I think the, uh, you talk about like, okay, these are guys that like, even if they hit their outcome, they're a backup. Like a great example of that is the kid that they're bringing in for a visit. Uh, uh, it's, it's, it's Baron more from Texas tech, who's an older prospect. He's played a crap ton of football in college. Um, like physically. Not super gifted, you know, and so they're, they're kicking their back. They're kicking, they're kicking the tires on guys like that where it's kind of one of those things where it's like, Hey, you've played a bunch. Could you come in as a rookie and be able to execute an NFL offense is I think kind of what they're looking for. And that'll be interesting too, to kind of see, cause I do think they take a quarterback and what kind do they take? Do they take like a tail and green or a Sawyer Robertson or, uh, Jalen Daniels. I think Goody man, like I think he could fall in love with true valor. Considering all considering all the wild stuff they've done with the arm talent guys in the past, including by the way, their current starting quarterback. Like I could see that. And then you have the pool. You could view him very much as like, Hey, if he doesn't get hurt, this is a top 10 talent. Like that, that's not a non-zero percent chance that if you would say. Yeah, after the 2023 season, people were just viewing him as a top 10 pick, an eventual top 10 pick. And then on the other side, you know, you've got guys like the Nuss bus and Carson Beck. They're both probably 24. Um, I know Nuss is. Yeah. Club Nick, he's kind of interesting. He was the guy that was hyped up, but didn't really mediocre arms. Yeah. You know, uh, Beck had a decent arm and then had UCL surgery, right? Elbow surgery. Um, Nuss has always had. Average arm strength and he's six one 205. You're right, man. I think the ceilings and that's all relative, but like the ceilings on this quarterback class are not particularly exciting. We'll be right back. No, and that's what I'm getting at too is like, they just get off of the Malik Willis train where. That was the opposite. Right. They got this effort, nothing that was just nothing but talent and they were able to develop that into a now starting quarterback. We'll see how it plays out, but he got starter money. Right. So it's going to be interesting to kind of see like, what are they, what do they want? You know, do they take a freak athlete that needs to be developed or do they take like a safer guy? Um, I don't know. I think that'll be really interesting to kind of see what route they take and what they look for because in a lot of ways. They didn't get lucky with Malik because I think they're really good at what they do, but they kind of did too because that could have the outcome of that could have been a lot different. And it, and they would have been getting ridiculed about it. Like you traded, you didn't have a plan. So you had to panic and trade for this guy for a seventh and now he's got to play right away and he's terrible. You know, that, that probably is more likely than actually what happened in Green Bay. Um, you know, and good on Malik for, for doing what he did and good on that for getting them ready and all that stuff. Like they deserve all the flowers that they're getting, but in a lot of ways it could have gone the Clayton Tune route where it's just like, whoa, what is going on here? Or the Seneca Wallace, uh, Scotty T route where they had to go back to Matt Flynn, you know, and it's, it's not easy to find a backup quarterback. It's not easy to find it. It's not easy to find a starter. It's one of the hardest things, you know, there's not, there's not 32 guys in the league that should be starting and let alone being a good quality backup. So it's, it's a really hard thing to do and, um, they, but they need to do it, you know, they need to do it or they need to hope that Jordan stays healthy. Um, because I think, I think they did the safe thing with Clifford, right? Like they, they viewed him as an older prospect with mediocre traits, but that they could get them through a game because of experience and all these other things. And it didn't work out and they had to go back to Toulsey McToulsey, right? And so that's why I like Cole Payton, Taylor and Green, Drew Allard. Those are the interesting prospects to me because it's like, all right, bring him to Matt school and see what happens. Let's talk about Green Bay's need for the position. I think it's, it's, it's pretty significant. Um, you know, Jordan Love, um, in my history with my opinion on Jordan Love has been done to death. We're not going to do that here today, but one criticism that is accurate and I don't even know if criticisms are at work, but like he, he does not play complete seasons or has not. That's, that's not, you know, um, I think he got hurt as a backup once and then, uh, Miss Time in 2023. Has Miss Time in 2025. Um, they're just like, you know, or 2024 when they, you know, they knew they needed Malik, right? And so, um, he might have played the whole season in 23. He did, but they needed Malik in 24. They need a Malik in 25. Um, I just, it's a thing. It's a real thing. Um, you know, Rogers had the two collarbone injuries. He's pretty durable, which is more normal in Papers. Right, right, right, right. Well, you know, with getting far, who never missed the game and Rogers probably doesn't get enough credit for how healthy he was able to stay and what he was able to play through. So, and like things like the Viking season last year happened and, and Green Bay fans have had such little like, okay, well, McCarthy, well, McCarthy stinks, or maybe he got hurt. Well, okay, now here's Carson Rents. Now here's Max Brosner. Now here's McCarthy again. Like that, that kind of thing can happen and that sort of happened that tolls in year, but you know, the need for a backup was big. You're never going to pay Malik Willis what he got from Miami. And plus it was his time to be a starter anyway. Um, they're going to get a nice compensatory pick out of that. And it was a good deal. Um, the question obviously then though becomes is that better done by a veteran? Uh, Kirk Cousins was bandied about, I can't even express my reaction to the Cousins contract. Forget what it says on paper, what it's really not the $157 million number for him to get $20 million to play football this year to me is insane. He has looked cooked cooked from an arm strength perspective. Whatever, I'm not going to get into all that. I would have been fine for Ham sandwich. He was did not get a ham sandwich. He got, I don't know what steak dinner. Like I don't know what the equivalent of that is. Uh, you know, all you can eat at the Brazilian steakhouse, right? Where they come and like, uh, could take the meat off the skewers. He was full go to Chow. He got Fogo. He doesn't know how to make less than 20 million here physically can't do it. He's all time, all time baggitter all time. Good on him. Um, you and I, and this is more India's you buy us probably, but we were interested in Tray Lance. I thought from a physical tools standpoint, bringing him to Matlow Fleur school would have been great. Um, in a similar vein and in a similar to Tray and a similar to middle, equally will is people have talked about training for Anthony Richardson. I don't hate that. Um, and then you mentioned that Jimmy Garoppolo would be on the other side, you know, very mediocre traits, but at least can run the system and not get you fired. Um, I mean, he quarterbacked in a Super Bowl. Did he not? Yep. Yeah. Okay. Well, there you go. That's the other thing too is it's like, man, not having a first round draft pick, you need to have a good backup quarterback just for spite, just for spite. You know, you don't want to, you don't want to give someone a top five pick because you just completely crashed and burned with your quarterback. That's true. So that's just well. So, you know, the last point or the second to last point here is potential fits. I think we pretty much talked that through. I like Aller. I like Peyton. I like Taylor and green. I would like them even if right, like love turns his ankle week one and you need to start this kid week two. That's a little nerve wracking, but I want the lottery ticket. I want Lafleur to work with a talented and these guys are all talented, but I mean, I want Lafleur to work with a guy that can get them a comp pick in four years, a real comp pick in four years, and then you know, you know, oh, this is Carson Beck or this is, you know, Sawyer Robertson or stuff like that. What do you think about it? Yeah, I think that's kind of the pack or way that's what they've always done to right like since Ron will if you can go, you can go down the line and talk about your Mad Hassell backs your Mark Burnell is your Aaron Brooks is you know, like, they've developed guys to turn into good starters in the NFL. That's just kind of what they do. And so I think they're getting back to that now with Willis and I think we're going to see more of that. I think that's always going to be the goal because it seems like it is like last year there were some there were some like talk about like Malik Willis maybe just being like content with staying in Green Bay just as a backup and kind of taking a backup type deal. But then he went out and played really, really well, you know, and I don't think in Green Bay it's ever going to be the case where they just want to be like, it's never going to be the case where they just want a guy to be there for eight years as a backup. Like they want guys that are young. They want to develop these guys and I think I'm with you on that. I would swing for the fences because why not? Right. Like I would love to see I would love to see a mat la floor game plan with like with tailing green just like a one off. So what we're going to do, we're going to use your legs, we're going to make the throws easy, and we're just going to the office is going to look completely different. And we kind of saw that with Malik when he would play him and I do wonder if Matt now is like, gosh, it's really nice having a quarterback back on. She has a year to Malik year to Malik in Green Bay was a completely different thing. Yeah, because my training wheels off. Yeah, 100%. Okay, last one gun to your head. Do the Packers take one before round six? No. Gosh, that's hard. No, man, okay, four. So like so you're so they've got this is tough together. It's one of their first four picks. Yeah. No, no, they don't they don't do it. Okay. Guys, this show was brought to you by the Green Bay Draft Guy powered by Packer Report. There should be a link below to purchase that.
