Insights
  • Imposter syndrome is a nearly universal psychological pattern affecting high-achievers across all demographics, even elite students at institutions like Harvard University
  • Self-doubt persists despite objective evidence of competence because people don't vocalize their doubts, creating an illusion of isolation in experiencing these feelings
  • Success is earned through gradual skill-building and hard work from a baseline of zero knowledge, similar to bamboo growth requiring unseen foundational development before visible results
  • Accepting oneself and one's achievements without constant self-criticism is essential for mental wellbeing and unlocking confidence
  • Subconscious mind reprogramming through guided visualization and metaphorical storytelling can shift deeply held beliefs about self-worth

Imposter syndrome is known by a few other names, such as the imposter phenomenon and the fraud syndrome. It's a psychological pattern in which an individual doubts their accomplishments and has a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a fraud. Even though that person is most likely very competent, you see everybody has self-doubts about themselves, and everyone has fears. Not everybody shows this though, and you have to realise that getting over these fears is a very natural part of human behaviour. There's even a story from Harvard University, one of the best universities in the world, where a teacher asks the classroom, do you feel if you don't belong here? Nearly every student put their hands up, and these are students who deserve to be there, who've studied extremely hard to be in their position, and are some of the best students from all over the country and world. The students soon realized that everyone has these feelings and thoughts, and they can be overcome, and you will overcome these thoughts too. So please, get more comfortable in the bed, have a stretch and relax into it, sink into the mattress and get into the most comfortable position you can, and then concentrate on your breathing as you take deep breaths in and out. And as you concentrate, breathing in and out, make sure that you're breathing through your body area, that your body is slowly moving in and out, and you realize each breath makes you feel more and more relaxed, and more and more peaceful. As you breathe deeply in and out, your mind begins to relax like the rest of your body. And you begin to notice a relaxing feeling flow into your face, relaxing all the muscles in your face. The muscles soften in your forehead, soften around the eyes and eyelids, all the muscles detent around the eyes, your eyelids rest gently and the feeling of relaxation flows through your body, it's flowing from the top of your head, all the way down to your toes and back up again. And right now is back in your head, relaxing your face, relaxing your jaw. All tension in your jaw relaxes, and and your forehead smooth and relaxes too. Any lines and tension in your face feel soft as the feeling moves into your shoulders, making all the muscles feel loose and subtle. And the feeling moves down your arms, to your fingers, relaxing your biceps and triceps and forearms, and then it moves back into your neck, down your back, relaxing all the large muscles here, and all the muscle muscles along the spine. And this amazing relaxing feeling flows into your chest, down into your stomach, relaxing all the muscles in your torso, so you can do even deeper breaths, in and out. And you get so comfortable in the mattress, ready for sleep, as the sensation moves down into your hips, into your legs, relaxing all the muscles here, into your lower legs, into your toes. And this relaxing feeling moves up and down your body, soothing all muscles, more tendons, soothing every part of you that it touches, because it is an amazing feeling. And the feeling of weariness is getting transformed into relaxation, because sleep is one of the most natural things you can do. Maybe the most natural thing you can do. Because everyone was born into this world, sleeping in the womb, silent and peaceful. And every night, You can return to that silent and peaceful state. Is what your body needs, what it demands. In all tension, tightness is gone in your muscles. All the large muscles in your body feel so good. your thighs, your calves, your upper and lower back, and all the small muscles in your neck and shoulders, just drop now, and that feeling of relaxation is really flowing through your body, from the top of your head all the way down as to the very tips of your toes, and up and back again, to and fro, and you feel so blissful and peaceful, and you know tomorrow confidence will arise and your fears will be gone, but for now you don't even need to think about that as you start drifting off into deeper, deeper relaxation, moving into your subconscious, where different thoughts will come and go, where your brain is so powerful, where it will take on suggestions, and you know these suggestions will help you, everyone wants to feel more confident and assured, it's a natural feeling. And right now, in your mind's eye, I want you to picture yourself at the side of a stream, a very slow running stream, it could even be a small river with pine trees all around, and it's very warm here and a perfect temperature, it feels nice on the skin and there's a perfect breeze that you feel, not too warm and not too cool, and you walk along the pebbles on the side of the stream, and the pebbles gently separate as you put your weight on them, all more smooth than polished, from years of polishing, being moved gently by the stream. And on the side of this stream, you see a canoe. It's wooden and light and smooth to the touch. And you take the canoe, and you put it on the edge of the water and get in. And you push this light canoe onto the edge of the water and get in. And there's a paddle there which you can choose to use. And you get in. And you can choose how to ride the canoe downstream. You can sit up and look around. or relax and lie back on the cushions that are there, and the canoe knows where to go, as it takes you down the stream, it knows the route to take, and you look left and right and you can see nature, and you can see the sounds of nature, it's so relaxing, and the canoe bobs gently as it makes its way down the stream. And you look up and look at the beautiful sky, and see the birds dart around on the clear blue sky, and see the tips of the green pine trees disappear, one after the other, as you pass them by, very slowly. Up ahead of the river, you see a series of drops, some very gentle drops, which the canoe will traverse and take you deeper down into your subconscious. And as you drop on each one, the canoe serenely glides on the water as you come to the first draw. And the canoe drops down deeper. You feel deeply relaxed as you go down. And then onto the second drop. And the canoe gently goes down, down the drop. And you feel even more relaxed. And the canoe goes a little further. Onto the third drop. And you begin to feel so much more relaxed. as the canoe drops down once more And you feel yourself coming down to another drop and you feel so relaxed as you go down deeper and deeper into the next one. gentle splash of the water as you dip down, and you see the last three drops. And up ahead, you see the next three drops, and you approach the next one going down, And then the second, making you doubly relaxed. And then the third, which makes you even more relaxed than you've ever felt before. And as you glide into this water, you can see it's circled by a grass bank and pebbly beaches as you glide into the pool. This is the pool of tranquility. And it feels so good as you float along. You feel so relaxed as the canoe drifts, and it drifts over to the beach, and slowly beaches on the pebbles. And you take a step out of the canoe onto the pebbly beach, the pebbles moving again underfoot, making that unique sound. And you head on to the bank, where there's beautiful green grass there. And you sit down, and this is your place of tranquillity, where you can decide to stay or move on. Ahead of you, there's a forest with chattery birds, and on the other side, an open plain, with a stream's trippy tree still flows. Either way, if you walk or stay, you feel like you belong here, so relaxed, so at ease and so happy, as you gaze across the pool of serenity and tranquillity. is a perfect time to open your mind to new thoughts and ideas that you have not had before or forgotten about. It's a perfect time to rest if you're ready and it's a perfect time to gain more confidence and be the person you know you can be. And as you sit here you feel so confident, confident to relax, confident to explore and And you have the confidence to open your mind and take on new ideas. New ideas about yourself being more confident too. Allow my voice to guide you and take you to a subconscious place. It's not always easy to see how we are perceived by others, we sometimes need to take a step back. It sometimes isn't possible to notice the qualities within us, but other people know They know about our achievements, and they admire many things about us. We are often plagued by an inner feeling that we don't really deserve our achievements, And sometimes we worry that we'll be found out as a fraud, who will be exposed one day. Yes, it's clear to the people who've helped you on the way. All the people who admire you, and the people you help. They think very much otherwise. They know you deserve your achievements. They know that you are the real deal. Otherwise, you wouldn't be here where you are now. And you may feel that you don't deserve to be where you are right now. But the fact is, you are here. People have recognized certain qualities in you and have rewarded you for it. They see you as highly skilled, a highly valued person. They see you as someone with knowledge and they respect you for that. Wherever you are in your life right now, you've reached this position through sheer determination and hard work. Maybe you don't agree that you've worked hard to get where you are, but remember, you started from scratch. Just as everyone who starts off in life has to do, just as everyone learning new skills had to do. We were all born thoughtless, without any education or drive, but look where you are now and what you have achieved. You are unique, you are special, you can have thoughts and knowledge to share with the world and the world is interested in you. Some people learn quickly and easily, and others may struggle to understand some concepts. But you are where you are right now, because of you. Perhaps you feel that you have to prove your worth to others or yourself. You may even find yourself inwardly trying to justify your thoughts or actions in case they are challenged. Although rationally, you know that no one is likely to challenge you in this way, but feelings and emotions are not often rational. It seems that you cannot help yourself for experiencing that type of self-doubt. Nearly everyone does, if they are honest. We all admit to feelings of self-doubt sometimes. In fact, as you know, the feelings have become so common that this condition is widely known as the imposter syndrome. The imposter syndrome encompasses feelings that are common to many human beings and are seen across race, nationality, age and gender. People suffering from this often feel as though everyone else knows everything. But what they don't realize is that deep down, other people don't know everything, and in many cases, they will know a lot less than you. We all privately doubt ourselves, but we believe we are alone in thinking that way, no one else, voice is their doubts. Even Albert Einstein, one of the greatest scientists of all time, suffered from imposter syndrome, describing himself as someone whose work didn't deserve as much attention as it received. He claimed that his theory of relativity was inspired by a dream, whereby he was hurtling down a mountainside. In the dream, he spread faster and faster, and when he looked up at the sky, he noticed how the stars looked and appeared as he approached the speed of light. I want you to come with me on a similar journey, a journey deep into the realms of your wonderful subconscious mind. Instead of hurtling down the mountainside, I want you to find yourself floating gently down to a beautiful place with blue skies and soft candy floss clouds. Below you, you see carpets of grass on the sweet scented meadows and ornate picture box buildings and manicured gardens with exotic plants that smell divine. Picture the scene in your mind, make it real and as vivid as it can possibly be. Good, that's good. As you float down further, perhaps you notice clusters of pink cherry blossom trees scattered here and there, and when you reach the bottom of the mountain, you feel you have landed on soft feathery cushions and you take a look around at your surroundings. To one side of you there is a beautiful turquoise lake bordered with tall bamboo plants that through shade over the pastel coloured water lilies that float elegantly on top of the still lake, and you're feeling very comfortable and relaxed, and you notice close by there is a temple carved out of wood, and there are some intricately patterned steps leading up to the temple, and there you are greeted by an old monk who is wearing a long purple robe. His hands are together as though in prayer, and he slowly and steadily walks over to where you're resting. You begin to rise while the monk bows his head, and with his hands still in prayer, he beckons you to sit with him on some cushions. You notice around you there are bamboo plants, and he explains how the bamboo needs plenty of nurturing. If you are a gardening enthusiast, you may already know that bamboo requires fertile soil, sunshine and water. And in the first year of growth, there are no visible signs of activity. In the second, third and fourth year there is stillness and nothing seems to grow, and yet in the fifth year a miracle happens, and in just a few weeks the The bamboo suddenly shoots up until it is higher than the monk, and the monk explains that during the first four years, the bamboo was developing a strong unseen foundation, And had it not done so, it couldn't have sustained its life as it grew. He then bows his head again, before offering you a bowl from which to take a drink. You lift the bowl up to your lips, and you take a sip of delicious, sweet liquid. And you get a feeling, a very deep, comfortable, relaxed feeling that's sleepy and very happy. And you look at this person that you have created in your mind and you realise that he or she represents your own inner wisdom, and has many secrets and stories to share. Your mind is open and receptive to new ways of thinking and feeling. And you see now that the monk symbolizes your collective unconsciousness, and you feel a gentle breeze in the air. As butterflies flit by, landing on nearby flowers before flying off and dancing and interweaving in the air there a breaking of the silence as you become aware of distant musing as a soft voice begins to rhythmically speak You are not sure whether the voice belongs to you or the monk or even the butterfly or the animals around. It could even be the murmuring of the afternoon breeze, unfolding its stories. And you may already know the story. Many stories where the collective unconsciousness is known at a deeper level. You don't even need to make sense of its meaning. unconscious mind will do this for you. In far eastern folklore, there was once the story of the young fisherman. The fisherman knew the names of the animals and beasts in his kingdom, and was kind to all who he met. The fisherman was looked up to, he was loved and respected by everyone who knew him, but deep inside he felt unworthy of all that love and respect. Who am I? the fisherman would ask himself. I have still so much to learn I must prove to myself and my friends that I am worthy of them he didn't voice his doubts so no one knew how he felt and he continued his job as a fisherman providing for the villagers in his usual way and all greatly appreciated his work. A small group of children in the village had heard their parents and friends singing his praises, and one day they decided to follow him to the beach, where his boats lay hidden in the shade of bamboo. The children watched the fisherman As he went to prepare his boat For his expedition The children were strong swimmers So when the fisherman Went out on his boat They waded into the sea To swim around in the warm shallow waters there was a turtle swimming to the shore waiting to greet the fishermen as it always did the children saw the great turtle and as you know children can often be very cruel and they began teasing and frightening the turtle prodding it with canes from the uprooted bamboo. The turtle cried out, and the fisherman heard his cries and raced over to rescue his friends. The children quickly hurried back to their families, and the turtle was so grateful that it carried the fisherman to a mythical underwater dragon palace, where he was warmly welcomed. and he met and spoke to the princess of the court. For a while, the fisherman lived in luxury and opulence and all his mental and physical needs were met. But deep inside, he felt that he didn't deserve all these wonderful treasures. He no longer needed to fish and the fisherman helped run the palace overseeing many important tasks such as arranging guardianship for the palace's secret treasure and overseeing meetings between the elders. The fisherman was truly appreciated by all who worked for him but he couldn't get over the feeling that he didn't deserve his position at the palace. He felt he was a fraud and that the old king and the elders who had lived in the palace all their lives knew so much more than him and one day they would expose him for what he was. the years went by and the self-doubts played on his mind so much that they eventually drove him to desire to return to his own people the princess begged the fisherman to remain but she couldn't bear him to see him so unhappy so she gave him a jeweled lead box as a token of her everlasting love to be entrusted with this box was a great honor as the fisherman knew that the Alexa of life depended on the safe being of this beautiful container and its contents the princess knew the fisherman's self-doubt as she placed her finger to his lips as they parted she whispered to him you are as you are do not open this box in any circumstances the sea turtle was summoned to the palace to carry the fisherman and the jeweled box back to his home his home on the land they travelled over the ocean and rose out of the warm waters soon to breathe in the warm afternoon air. On the journey, sea dragons and sharks tried to steal the box, but the fisherman held it close to his heart until he spotted an island, which he recognised as his homeland. When he arrived in his village, the fisherman was shocked to see that everything had changed. the turquoise lake with its bamboo and lilies had been replaced by monstrous buildings the temple was gone and in its place was an ugly shopping precinct crowded with strangers instead of the beautiful pink cherry blossom trees there were electricity pylons and tall looming chimneys, pouring out smoke and polluting the once beautiful island. He knew no one in this village. His parents had long since gone, and the children who had swum on the shore teasing his friend the turtle were old. In his sadness, the fisherman held onto his jeweled box that the princess had bestowed on him. He longed to be close to her again, and forgetting her warning, he ended the clasp and lifted the lid. Suddenly, a cloud of white smoke emerged from the box and engulfed the fisherman. His vision was obscured, and for a while he was blinded, and when the smoke cleared, he saw that he had been transformed into an old whitehead man. As my voice trails away, you will find yourself sitting on soft fluffy cushions and instead of the jeweled box, you're still holding the bowl of sweet liquid. As the dream fades away, the monk bows and you are reminded that you are good enough. and you will always be good enough. You are what you are and you have to respect that in yourself. The monk reminds you that in your earlier days you know nothing about the work you are doing now. Just like others at this time you started from scratch and learnt how to do what you needed to do. You learned from your elders gradually and you picked up new skills. You became good at what you did and you were appropriately rewarded for your efforts. Others worked alongside you in these earlier days but some did not achieve what you have achieved. The monk continued softly telling you that this is because some people are further ahead in your field of work. And you could become one of those people. You could be ahead in your position too. Because you've proved your worth in many different ways. And you deserve your success. And you are good enough. You're good enough if you want to continue and achieve the goals you want to achieve. But you're also good enough now. and that's why you are not an imposter and that's why you're here now you are what you are and your unconscious mind accepts this as your new reality yes there are still important lessons to learn and you are learning some of these lessons right now the fisherman was one of those people who also earned success. He was a good kind person who looked after the people, the animals and the sea creatures and he justly was rewarded for all his hard work. And like the fisherman, you can begin to accept that you are genuinely deserving of the acclaim that you currently receive. There is no need for you to go back because you're happy where you are right now. You have been too critical of yourself and had no one to stop you putting yourself down because they didn't know how you felt. The monk can see inside your soul and knows what you are thinking and feeling. The monk is no longer a monk, but your collective unconsciousness that guides you in all that you do. as you realize that this entity is not really separate from you, but he is part of you. You are confident, and it all becomes clearer, and you realize who you really are, and that's all that matters. So as you rest in this comfortable state, listening to the sound of my voice, certain When changes take place on a deeper level of awareness, you begin to quietly accept yourself and realize that you do deserve success, because you have earned it. You earned it unconsciously, applying yourself to what you were doing. Even though you didn't realize you were doing this, you are not an imposter, you never were an imposter, but that was the voice of self-doubt that has been banished now from your head. And as you begin to accept who and what you are, you feel happier and stronger, and you allow your confidence to shine, and it does. A beautiful light shines from your heart and from your soul, and you know that you live as you live, you are as you are, and you accept this without question. For all those self-doubts disappear in an instant, and your mind becomes clearer, and And your life becomes brighter for you. For you, and all those that you know and appreciate and love you, they do so because you are who you are. And these suggestions are firmly embedded into your subconscious, where they grow stronger and stronger day by day. They grow stronger and stronger by the hour and by the minute. And when you wake up tomorrow, and when you come back to normal conscious awareness, you will have a smile on your face and a spring in your step, and those self-doubts are cast far, far away. They are never to return, and you are now ready to go to bed and fall asleep. Do you remember the stories you've been told and the directions you've been given as you fall deeply, deeply asleep?
