Summary

The episode features a Daily Show mockumentary about California Governor Gavin Newsom's political career and public image, followed by discussion of California's high-speed rail project failures and Los Angeles homelessness and prostitution problems ahead of the 2028 Olympics.

Insights
  • Newsom's narrative inconsistencies (nepotism vs. humble beginnings, baseball scholarship claims) undermine his presidential ambitions and public credibility
  • California's major infrastructure projects (high-speed rail, homelessness initiatives) show chronic mismanagement with zero accountability mechanisms despite massive spending
  • Government agencies actively resist transparency and audits, suggesting systemic incentives to hide spending failures rather than address them
  • Los Angeles is unprepared for Olympic hosting with deteriorating conditions in tourist areas, contradicting official readiness claims
  • Democratic politicians avoid criticizing failed projects due to entrenched union and contractor interests, creating perverse incentives against reform
Trends
Government agencies blocking transparency initiatives through legislative language that exempts 'weakness' disclosures from public recordsInfrastructure projects expanding timelines indefinitely while reframing failures as 'jobs programs' rather than delivery failuresHomelessness encampments becoming permanent fixtures in commercial districts, driving business closures and neighborhood deteriorationPolitical figures using media platforms (podcasts, social media) to rehabilitate image rather than address policy failuresBipartisan recognition of project failures but Democratic inability to act due to special interest dependenciesProstitution and drug use concentration in specific urban corridors despite task force announcementsOlympic host city preparation lagging with visible deterioration in public spaces and safety conditions

Something's not right here. Crime is up all over the state. The homelessness in the city is out of control. The economy is sick. Taxes are high. Housing is expensive and businesses are leaving. From Skid Row to the Tenderloin. To the Bay Area and back there. California needs fixing. And John Phillips is just the man to lead the charge. It's the Fix California Hour with John Phillips and Randy Wang. And we continue at 105 in the afternoon on the John Phillips show. Mr. Randy Wings in Culver City. John, Gavin Newsom is getting a lot of national coverage thanks to his book, Young Man in a Hurry. But not all of it is flattering. Some of it is mocking him, including The Daily Show. They put together a eight minute mini documentary covering Gavin Newsom's life. Would you like to hear it? Oh, I can't wait. And I've got to tell you, ever since he decided that he's over being a state politician, I think the only thing he does at night at home is just watch that movie over and over and over again, A Star is Born. I just can't figure out if they do a remake of it at some point in the future, which role he's going to play, that of Bradley Cooper or Lady Gaga. For more, let's get to this mini documentary from The Daily Show. From the state that brought you President Ronald Reagan and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger comes an exciting new politician ready for his close up. Audiences and critics agree. Gavin Newsom is inspiring, savvy and charismatic and has awesome tweets. Well, kind of. Those tweets belong to Izzy. He's now playing in select venues, but is preparing to be released nationwide. This is the Daily Show-ography of Gavin Newsom, leading man for your consideration. Gavin Christopher Newsom was born in 1967 to a family that was as San Francisco as stepping on a syringe in the tenderloin. Don't tell him that. Okay, so this is not going to be just 100% flattering. This is great. As stepping on a syringe in the tenderloin. Accurate. They're Fran, fifth generation. And thus began Newsom's classic rags to riches story. My father, his closest friends in the world, were some of the richest families in the world. Fine, he's a nepo baby, but so. Which is the exact opposite of what he's trying to portray in the book. Because for whatever reason, since Abraham Lincoln, whenever a candidate runs for president, they all come from a log cabin. Fine, he's a Nepo baby, but so is Dakota Johnson, and we love her. Plus, Newsom can also do the humble beginnings thing. I grew up with a single mom, and she came from nothing. She struggled all her life. See, Gavin knows both sides of the tracks. His daddy came from wealth and his mommy was poor as hell. And apparently no one on the wealthy side ever helped her. Plus, Newsome can also do the humble beginnings thing. I grew up with a single mom and she came from nothing. She struggled all her life. You see that? He can play rich and poor. That's what I call range. I don't know if that's what I would call it. I grew up with a single mom and she came from nothing. She struggled all her life. you see that he can play rich and poor that's what i call range christian bale has nothing on this guy after going to college on a baseball scholarship gavin followed in the footsteps of so many young graduates by oh wait wait wait wait wait now that is a part of his biography that is just not true and what he does now is he has changed the language on how he describes it He used to say that he was a kid from the wrong side of the tracks and he was dyslexic and he had a difficult time reading books and studying for exams and he wasn't the best student in high school. But because he was a left handed pitcher of to great acclaim, he was given a scholarship at the University of Santa Clara University that produced Kurt Rambis. And apparently when you talk to people who actually played for that team, Gavin Newsom was never on that team. I forget who it was, but some reporter actually got to the bottom of it. And what they found was that Gavin Newsom was not actually given the baseball scholarship, but his politically connected father called in some favors. And that's how he got into a university that should have rejected him. Well, that's a completely different story. I heard Gavin sob story on one of the podcasts he did last year where he said because he was good at baseball. that's the only reason his daddy started paying attention to him and was proud of him. Yeah, we'll just give it a little bit of time. Wait till those primaries start. And then he's going to pull a full Rachel Dolezal and also claim to be from the Dominican Republic. Gavin followed in the footsteps of so many young graduates by opening a winery with nothing but his grit, his refined palate and the financial backing of an oil tycoon. Bartles and James, he's not. But you hear him tell the story and he tells it a bazillion times. I put pen to paper. I started from nothing except, you know, all my daddy's rich friends gave me loans. Well, and what's the saying about wineries? You know how to become moderately wealthy? You become very wealthy and then you buy a winery. Most of them lose money. Yes. Yes, things were finally starting to work out for this tall, handsome, athletic, well-connected young man. Owning this small business gave Newsom his first taste of the issues affecting real Americans. Enough's enough. We're sick and tired of quirky wines, wines that are tainted, wines that are sent back in restaurants. Move over, Bernie. What, were you a screw cap guy, Gavin? Nothing wrong with that. It sounds like he's a sommelier of sorts. move over bernie there's a new man of the people in town newsom's wine company was a hit he had the smell of success with some oaky notes and i want to say cherry this is solid writing but soon a health code clash with city hall led to sour grapes so newsom took his oh this was the whole thing where he was going to war with san francisco because he had to have a mop sink inside his wine shop. So wait, his socialization into politics came from having a fight with the Barbara Ferrer of San Francisco? Yes. So Newsom took his complaint straight to the mayor, who had a strange counteroffer. Willie Brown, the mayor, said, I'm going to point you to the parking traffic commission because I was bitching about doing business in San Francisco. Okay, well, apparently that story is a little longer, too, because what Gavin has said was that Willie called him after Gavin was on TV complaining about dealing with the city of San Francisco. And Willie said that he was going to put Gavin on the film commission. And then Gavin shows up and finds out he was put on the parking commission. Well, that sounds like a bait and switch. That's classic Willie. Getting appointed to a position he knew nothing about soon gave Gavin the confidence to aim even higher. Willie Brown was termed out as mayor and there was an open seat. And I think at 33, I announced, why the hell not? And with that stirring message as his clarion call, Newsom landed his biggest role to date, mayor. He quickly made his mark, taking the lead on gay marriage. Separate is not equal. Because he wanted everyone to experience the joy that he felt with his wife, Kimberly Guilfoyle. Oh, you knew we were getting to this part of the story. I think that's a portion of his biography that most people have forgotten about by now. Except if you've seen that picture of the bearskin rug, because that image is burned into your brain. A California district attorney who definitely has a type. Gavin and Kimberly were practically San Francisco royalty, even if they didn't quite know how to use chairs. But like so many celebrity marriages, it ended in divorce, sending Gavin into his bad boy era. Oh boy, here we go. Oh, we're all familiar with this. He lashed out at the press. That was a great cheat time. You can't help yourself. That's what he was screaming at Dan Noyes for Dan Noyes asking about Gavin's reported drinking problem. Oh, we like Dan Noyes. he's the best and he's been a thorn in gavin's side for many many many many years press that was a great cheap job there were all these reports that he was obsessed with all the newspapers writing about him and he was drinking at night to cope sounds like the gavin we know now except instead of the san francisco chronicle it's fox news well and at one point he claimed that he went to rehab after he got caught sleeping with the campaign manager's wife, but he has since spoken of drinking on a regular basis. He said he has wine when he watches the nightly news And then a friend of his recently said in a news article that after the la fires gavin was so distraught he drank an entire bottle of tequila in one sitting oh my and of course we all remember this gem clean and sober is one of the biggest damn mistakes this country's ever made i know it's a hold your hand idealistic point of view that somehow magically i mean god bless some of you i if you're like me i've been known to have a glass of wine at night watching some of the nightly news. We all need to self-medicate periodically. So you just open that bottle and have one glass? Sure. I guess we now know what he and Dana Williamson have in common. I think his liver's in okay condition, though. Well, that's speculation. You can't help yourself. He reached for the bottle. Rumors of possible alcohol abuse have dogged the mayor. There were even rumors of an affair with a staffer's wife. But of course, you can't believe everything you hear and read. I want to make it clear that everything you've heard and read is true. Bad boy. Oh, wow. Okay. To get back on his feet, Gavin threw himself into his role as mayor, tackling homelessness. We better solve the housing problem. and high-speed rail. We'll be back in 2017. Oh, come on. And if you remember, they played a little clip of Gavin's PowerPoint presentation when he was mayor of San Francisco with his plan to end homelessness in 10 years. And that was over 20 years ago. Good job, Gavin. Celebrating this completion. Always yearning for a larger part, Newsom soon landed the role of California's official understudy, Lieutenant Governor. Which is not really a job, which is why he had time to also host a show on current TV. Oh yes, he made Al Gore very proud. Now he could focus on exciting new projects like ending homelessness and building high-speed rail. They did their homework. And he did such a good job of it. This is the biggest infrastructure project in California's history. But as a versatile talent, Newsom was able to tackle these tough. You know, someone should really just put together and The Daily Show did a great job here. Just a little time lapse of Gavin talking about high speed rail as his hair goes from as black as night to as white as day. This is brutal. We're only part of the way through it. And I'm just trying to think how many bottles of wine Gavin is already into this Daily Show vignette. But as a versatile talent, Newsom was able to tackle these tough issues while also starting a talk show. Oh, wow, they do cover the talk show. Oh, yeah. Hello and welcome to the program. A platform he used to ask the hard-hitting questions important to the people of his state. You're not one of those method actors that becomes that character off screen. or you are but this rising star couldn't be held down and soon enough gavin ascended to governor a role that would finally allow him to tackle it was either him or john cox well that was the second time around well no that was the first time around it was brian dolly the second time the person that posed the biggest threat to him the first time around was Antonio Villaraigosa. Talk about a guy who won't go away. And of course, what happened there was Antonio Villaraigosa was getting the charter school money. So Gavin had to pivot to the left and get all the teachers union money. And he has been beholden to them ever since. A role that would finally allow him to tackle important issues like homelessness and high speed rail. You can see that. They keep coming back to that, don't they? I love it. It has been a very, very, very long time. Like homelessness and high-speed rail. You can see the progress we've actually made. They're laying tracks to get to where they start to lay the tracks. Okay, that statement right there is quintessential, Gavin. Well, and that statement's from years ago. Just to remind you, it is now 2026. they have still yet to lay any tracks no but when they talk about it they don't talk about it as if it's a failure they say oh well it's a great jobs program don't worry about the fact that you can't buy a ticket to ride the train don't worry about the fact that the train really doesn't exist as long as we're spending money and people are getting w-2s it's a success soon this futuristic bullet train will take people from the thriving hub of merced all the way to the shining metropolis of bakersfield kind of actually it's gonna go to wasco yes it goes to wasco which has nothing but a prison which is 30 miles outside of bakersfield and currently they've actually shortened what the initial track is going to be it's not even going to go to merced it's going to go to madera And then at that point, they might cut out Merced so it can go to Gilroy. The only reason I'm even aware that Wasco exists is because that's where I sent Grandpa that month I spent on jury duty. But Governor Newsom has also faced setbacks like having to hide half of his moneymaker during the pandemic and making some hard choices like limiting public gatherings. Well, most public gatherings. Newsom broke his own rules by attending a lavish birthday party at the famed French Laundry restaurant. Oh, you knew we were getting here. It's one of Gavin Newsom's claims to fame. What's interesting to me is of all of the Gavin scandals, whether it is the failure on homelessness, the failure to deliver with the bullet train, the sleeping with the campaign manager's wife, whatever. The one that seems to get him worked up the most is the French Laundry. that's one that legit bothers him to this day. Well, there's no defense for it. And the more you learn about that story, the more irritated you get when you find out the friend who he was celebrating his 50th birthday was his lobbyist buddy, who was the lobbyist for Netflix, but also for PG&E. Which is the company that got a bailout from, guess who? Gavin Newsom. Like Chef Keller's short rib sous vide, Gavin found himself in hot water. I made a bad mistake, so I want to apologize to you. Such emotion, such pathos, such humility. He can do it all. It was a dark time for Gavin. He even faced a statewide recall election. And he's still pissed about that. Oh, yeah. Luckily, the COVID vaccine meant he could show his whole face again. So he won easily. I mean, ultimately, it wasn't close. No, it wasn't, unfortunately. Now past the pandemic and the recall, no obstacle or small child could stand in his way. That's the video of where he was in China playing basketball and knocked over the kids. Yeah, he wasn't over there playing with Yao Ming. He was over there playing with a bunch of six-year-olds. He was now totally free to work on his priorities like high-speed rail and homelessness. This is brutal. This time, he actually made progress because company was coming over. Folks say, oh, they're just cleaning up this place because all those fancy leaders are coming into town. This is when they sweeped all the homeless under the rug at the Moscone Center because she was coming to town. Um, that's true. Take note, Hollywood. that's how you appeal to the Chinese market. Soon Gavin was preparing for the role of a lifetime president. Gavin Newsom, potential contender to replace the president as a Democratic nominee. But sadly that year there were two even more charismatic stars ready to shine. Then somehow Donald Trump swept back into the White House and Gavin knew exactly what to do. We need to change the conversation. And that's why I'm launching a new podcast. Of course. Well, the first one was with Marshawn Lynch, correct? Yes, that was politicking with Marshawn Lynch and his agent buddy, Doug Hendrickson. But that one didn't really get him a lot of notoriety. So he quickly abandoned them and figured out, okay, I'm going to do the podcast where I talk to the other side. And that's when he met with Charlie Kirk and got in trouble over the transgendered athlete situation. And while Trump was sending his soldiers into the streets, Gavin was ready to fight back in the tweets. California Governor Gavin Newsom has been mocking President Trump with all cap social media posts. It turns out Trump was the co-star that Gavin had been waiting for his whole career. A political star perhaps has been born. And so we ask that you consider Gavin Newsom, a screen ready Christian Bale type ready to tackle chronic problems like homelessness and high speed rail. Well there you go It completely brilliant You should watch the whole thing if you have time it on the daily show youtube page gavin newsom for your consideration okay i don think he will be playing christian bale or lady gaga i think the star that has been born with gavin newsom is more of the reality tv variety uh maybe he's more like clay aiken who for whatever reason now looks exactly like Melissa Etheridge. I don't know why. Mike Trott. You ready? Let's do it. Hosted by former Navy SEAL Mike Ridland. It's unfiltered. You know, when you go to the sound of the gun, bam, you're gone. It's weird. I mean, I've had so many near-death experiences. It's raw. I love this country. I offered my life to serve this nation and protect its people. The question, you know, what's the meaning of life? And to me, it just boils down to one single word, which is purpose. Mic drop. Follow and listen on your favorite platform. 800-222-5222 is telephone number 1-800-222-5222. If you'd like to email the show, you can do so at johnnydontlikeshow at gmail.com. That's johnnydontlikeshow at gmail.com. Well, we just listened to the Daily Show profile on California Governor Gavin Newsom. not just the governor of California, but a potential candidate for president of the United States of America. And one of the subjects that got a lot of play in that piece was the high speed rail, the bullet train, which, of course, was supposed to be fully complete by now and is not. Randy, you have an update for us on the bullet train. We still don't have a train. We still haven't laid track. But the high speed rail just made a five hundred million dollar settlement with a contractor for a change order. At the same time as the assembly is looking for ways to make this project even less transparent. For more on the high speed rail, here's ABC 10 in Sacramento. Well, it's a project over budget and behind schedule. You don't say. That is quite a combination. And tonight we're learning the High Speed Rail Authority recently approved paying more than half a billion dollars to settle a civil lawsuit. It comes as a state. By the way, that is half of the money raised throughout the entire year from cap and trade for the high speed rail that's supposed to build this train, eventually get it from L.A. to San Francisco or not. But half of the money that they raised this year is going to just a contractor lawsuit. what's so wild to me at this point is that in the race for governor both of the republican candidates want to get rid of high-speed rail but among the democratic candidates it is considered to be politically toxic to say we need to cut bait on this project because so many people are benefiting either through union contracts or having property purchased or being put on the board of directors, whatever the case may be, they can't say it's a failure and it's time to move on, which is totally nuts because this thing is never, ever, ever going to be completed ever. Not in our lifetimes, not ever. It comes as a state lawmaker proposes a bill about high speed rail audits and reviews and how those can be accessed. ABC 10's Jeannie Nguyen is here to explain. Becca, the more than half a billion dollar settlement was for a change order, which means changes within an original contract agreement with a design company. Now, the amount was set was set. This shows you how little the stewards of this money care where it's going, because there's always going to be more. You can have a contract dispute over a simple work order and that costs half a billion dollars. Can you imagine if there was a legit audit done of this project, what we would find out if we actually found out where every dollar was spent? Now, the amount was set, was set, decided in a closed session meeting. And while California Democratic lawmaker is hoping to make the process more transparent, Republicans are pushing back, saying this is a waste of taxpayer dollars. Shouldn't we know exactly why we had to pay five hundred million dollars out? Shouldn't it be completely laid out? Here's what happened. Here's the dispute. But of course, no, we're keeping everything a secret. We don't want to tell you how much any of this costs or what we're doing. you know what this reminds me of the la fires because remember when word first started to leak that the report the after action report on the fire was watered down by some entity and the first thing that the new fire chief said was i'm not interested in getting to the bottom of that i don't care who it was who had the report watered down we're just going to move forward starting today. And that seems to be the attitude with homeless spending. That seems to be the attitude with the high-speed rail, where no one wants to know where any of the dollars went. It's as if taxpayer money is just free for the taking. And if someone was able to get it, either through legitimate or illegitimate means, well, that's in the past. It's time to move on. No need to look. No need to ask serious questions. It's just time to look at tomorrow and not yesterday. Negotiate and finalize an appropriate settlement change order with DFJB up to an amount of 537.3 million dollars. During a January high speed rail board of directors meeting, more than 500 million dollars was approved to settle with a company contracted to design portions of the project. The settlement is frustrating, right? What was the problem here that they contracted with this company 15 years ago and they still haven't had to do anything? Well, can you imagine? Just look at materials. Look at what's happened with inflation. If you are dragging this project out this far beyond what it was supposed to be completed, I'm sure the cost of any number of items that you're going to need to complete the project are now much, much, much more expensive than they were when you decided that you were going to purchase them. The settlement is frustrating, right? As a taxpayer myself, not just the legislature, as a taxpayer, I want to see our dollars put to good use. Understanding the delays and frustrations around the high-speed rail project, Democratic Assemblymember Lori Wilson introduced AB-1608 to provide more tools for the Office of the Inspector General to do audits on the project. The project is delayed and the whole point of... That's saying much. It's delayed. It's delayed and no one wants to audit. Gavin vetoed legislation that would audit homeless spending. High-speed rail doesn't want an audit of how they're spending their money. We had Laura Chick on the program earlier this week who said that in the city of Los Angeles, the controller is hesitant to conduct legitimate audits on city spending. No one wants to prove that their money went to the right place. The project is delayed. And the whole point of the Office of Inspector General's existence is to address those things and be the eyes in the ear for the community. Yeah, but remember that whole report that we got from Julie Watts, where we have inspector generals, we do audits, and the legislature doesn't listen to any of the recommendations. So it's a complete waste of money. Oh, yeah. You can go back and listen to the podcast edition of that interview. It was a good one. But the bill's language includes a section that says it would prohibit the inspector general from making a report public if it determines the report would in part, quote, reveal weaknesses that could be exploited by individuals. So what that means is a bill that is designed that is described as this will make the high speed rail more transparent actually has language in it to make it less transparent because the inspector general doesn't have to release any reports if it makes the high speed rail look bad. Because that's what Sacramento does. Any type of legislation that says you can't disclose this information to the public, there's a reason why people are going to worry about that. Republican Assemblymember David Tonkepa says the last thing we need is more secrecy on a project that has gone over budget and past deadline. I think especially when it comes to change order fees in high-speed rail is why we need more transparency. The authority didn't do the early necessary works, knowing where the easement lines were, knowing to remove the power lines and getting the plots ready for work to be done. Go back to the very beginning. This could have been so much simpler. You could have built this thing along the five freeway where in most of the middle of California, there is nothing. You wouldn't need to buy up a whole bunch of land. And you wouldn't need to use eminent domain and move all these utilities. But no, no, no, no, no. We needed to make sure this included the Central Valley, that it went from Wasco to Fresno to Merced, because we need to connect those communities, even though what we've done is connect those communities to each other, not connect them to southern or northern California, which means nothing. And part of the reason we did that was the federal government said at the time in the Obama administration, hey, if you want these federal dollars, we want to make sure we do something about the asthma problem in Fresno. I just thought of something. This has taken so long. If and when we ever get to the bottom of why we didn do what you just described and people I sure made a mint off of selling land that a high rail authority ended up purchasing for God knows how much money If anything illegal was done, by the time we get to the bottom of it, all of these people are going to be dead. But Assemblymember Wilson reiterates her intention for the bill is transparency and says she's open to amendments to the bill. Weakness is a normal audit term, but it's not legally in the language. And so we want to make sure that we tighten that up. And I'm happy to do that. And that's the point of the legislative process is the author knows what they intend to do. And then others say, well, wait a minute. This is what that means to me. And then you tighten it up to be sure. Oh, we're having such a good time up in Sacramento, aren't we? None of these people have any urgency at all to fix this. Well, they're all going to be termed out if this thing is ever completed. So what do they care? A spokesperson with the High Speed Rail Authority provided ABC 10 with a statement about the settlement change order that says, in part, the action reflects the authority's commitment to delivering urgency and accountability and resolved claims and ties payment to achieve defined milestones. Wait a second. We should be proud that the High Speed Rail had to settle with a contractor for half a billion dollars? These people have no shame at all. To complete work necessary to accelerate track laying this year. You can find the full statement on our website at abc10.com. Becca. Jeannie, thank you. So there you go. That's the latest on a project that has been going on since 2012. The high speed rail. We voted on it in 2008. It started to get planned in 2005. Heck, they were starting to talk about it back in the 70s. But this thing has been, quote, under construction for the last 14 years, and we still got nothing to show for it. Here's a prediction. Your kids' kids are going to be driving to work, or they're going to be in whatever it is that Elon creates. And they're going to be listening to radio programs where they're talking about high-speed rail not being completed. mic drop you ready let's do it hosted by former navy seal mike ridland it's unfiltered you know you go to the sound of the gun bam you're gone it's weird i mean i've had so many near-death experiences it's raw i love this country i offered my life to serve this nation and protect its people the question you know what's the meaning of life and to me it just boils down to one single word which is purpose mic drop follow and listen on your favorite platform well if you listen to LA Mayor Mother Goose, the city of Los Angeles is totally ready to host the Olympics in 2028. Of course we are. It seems like every single day we get new evidence that proves that the mayor is on to something. And one of those things is more and more reports from our buddy Fox 11's Matthew Seedorf of growing homeless encampments and rampant prostitution in what used to be known as the nicer parts of Hollywood. For more, let's go to Fox 11 in Los Angeles. A gritty up-close look at the homeless encampments taking over LA's Western Avenue tonight. Residents and business owners say fear. Can I just say, love having Phil Schumann at the anchor's desk. He sounds great. I was over at Zuby's in Huntington Beach on Friday after our broadcast in Long Beach. And they had Fox 11 on the television screens at the bar. and it was Phil Schumann and Marla Tejas. And I took a picture and I texted it to them. And I thought to myself, that's the way the news should be in L.A. A gritty up close look at the homeless encampments taking over L.A.'s Western Avenue tonight. Residents and business owners say fear is rising and life in the neighborhood is changing fast. Fox 11's Matthew Seedorf live tonight with a story you'll only see on Fox 11. By the way, how do you think it feels to be the cameraman that Seedorf picks to do his reports? Because his reports always take him into somewhere dangerous. Yeah, I hope that union is good. Well, Phil, some call this ground zero for prostitution, but there's... I don't even want to know what that means. Well, Phil, some call this ground zero for prostitution, but there's a whole lot more going on. Elliott will show you the outside of this business. There's vandalism taking place there, and the business owner says there's also a growing homeless encampment nearby that she's fearful of. An up-close look at the encampments lining Western Avenue, where some residents say they're afraid just to walk by. How do you respond to people that they would call this situation a nuisance? Yeah, I think they're right. What am I going to say? I mean, they're right, absolutely right. That's a guy in a tent. how many teeth do you think he has well you can definitely just hear that he's missing a few yeah i think they're right he might still have old chomper but the rest of them who knows yeah i think they're right what am i going to say i mean they're right absolutely right we shouldn't be living like this tense we shouldn't be here smoking that is the reason that we call it a toothbrush instead of a teeth brush tents reinforced with plywood furniture roaming pets and even what appears to be a kitchen just a half block from oakwood and western an area neighbors describe as plagued with gang violence drug use and vandalism seriously the world to use karen bass's phrase is coming here for the world cup and they're going to realize that los angeles is a third world country inside the richest nation in the world. And in an area with a ton of fire risk, they have outdoor illegal kitchens that they're using. Why, of course. They kept tagging the side of her walls. You would paint over it. They called the city. Eventually, it just took so long. She started doing it herself. They asked it. Oh, don't do that. We literally have a story of a guy in Northridge that started painting over the gang graffiti and he got murdered for it. So don't do that. The down ass kids don't like that. They acid etched her windows and then she replaced the windows the next day. They came back acid etched again. L.A. So people are going to come to Los Angeles from all over the world. And, you know, there are certain tourist things that people do when they're here from another country. They want to see the Hollywood sign. They want to go to Disneyland, maybe Venice Beach. and I'm sure many of them are going to go to Hollywood. But now that Hollywood has been taken over by the hookers, it's not John Wayne's footprints that they're going to be sticking their feet in. When she gets here at eight in the morning, there are literally her words, naked girls standing on Oakwood in front of her shop. You know, this is another one of those two-way stories. That was the story where I had to bleep something. And by the way, I talked to Seedorf about this. He had to call the newsroom to ask what they could film and what they had to blur out. It was that graphic. a couple were having sex right here on the bench on the bench right outside right outside the house that neighborhood just four blocks from this intersection i mean there's definitely safer areas you know maybe feeling wise when you walk out the door but i've been here for four and a half years never had a problem you feel like it's safer being out here than in the shelter despite city programs people at these encampments say they prefer tents at this troubled intersection over shelters yeah do you know why the homeless don't want to go in a shelter because the homeless don't want to be around the homeless. No, and because it's a lot more fun in the encampments because that's where the drugs are. Put anybody in there, they don't care about people's lives, they don't care about the risk, they don't care about none. A task force was recently announced to target prostitution in this area.
