Summary

Brock and Salk discuss the Mariners' rough 3-4 start, the Seahawks' disciplined offseason approach post-Super Bowl win, and preview the NFL Draft with analyst Daniel Jeremiah. DJ breaks down edge rusher prospects, running back Jeremiah Love as a potential trade-up target, and the overall quality of this year's draft class.

Insights
  • The Seahawks' refusal to overpay departing players (Ken Walker, Boy Moffett) despite Super Bowl success demonstrates conviction in their evaluation process and draft ability rather than emotional spending
  • This draft class emphasizes quantity of starters over star power, making mid-round picks (64, 96) potentially more valuable than the 32nd pick for addressing multiple needs
  • Rugged, violent edge rushers who refuse to be blocked are more valuable to the Seahawks' defensive scheme than pure speed-based pass rushers
  • Running back Jeremiah Love is rated as the second-best player in the draft by DJ, comparable to Saquon Barkley and Jameer Gibbs, making a trade-up scenario potentially worthwhile
  • The Seahawks are likely to trade back from pick 32 to accumulate more picks, as this draft rewards quantity over quality for team building
Trends
Post-championship teams increasingly rely on draft evaluation over free agency spending, prioritizing process over emotional roster movesSafety position gaining prominence in draft evaluations with elite prospects like Downs commanding high draft considerationInterior offensive line depth improving, allowing teams to find starting-caliber guards and centers in second/third roundsRunning back position becoming increasingly shallow at the elite level, creating potential trade-up scenarios for premier talentsProspect evaluation emphasizing resilience and response-to-adversity over pure athletic metricsPro day attendance and interaction observation becoming key evaluation tool beyond traditional combine metricsTeams valuing trade-back opportunities in weaker draft classes to accumulate additional picks for depth buildingQuarterback evaluation focusing on leadership, work ethic, and teammate interaction beyond physical tools

Quotes
"They have conviction and belief in their process and it's, there's proof in the pudding coming off of a Super Bowl, but they didn't overpay. They got the deals done that they felt were proper deals and fair deals and didn't stretch it."
Daniel JeremiahMid-episode
"Rugged, I think of violent. I think of someone who there's a different way that you can get off of a block... the rugged guys are who are going to latch you, grab you by the chest. And there's just a violent tug and pull and throw and they just refused to be blocked."
Daniel JeremiahDraft discussion
"Starters over stars. So there's a good number of starters here in this draft. There's not as many stars, there's a lot of prospects that have some holes."
Daniel JeremiahDraft class assessment
"I would rather be picking 25 than maybe seven in this draft. Like, you know, it, as compared to other drafts and next year, I think we have more of that star power."
Daniel JeremiahDraft strategy
"Defend our way of life. Pay off all these convictions that we have. There's really no sweeter feeling."

Get in the freaking auto! From the Quantum Fiber Studio, this is Brock and Zock on Seattle Sports. Brock Heward and Mark, Matt, Mark, sorry about just Mike. Heward, not exactly Joe Kat there in the pocket. Now here are your hosts, Brock Heward and Mike Zock. Man, so much feist out there today. I think the Mariners started 0-7, not 3-4. But I also understand a little bit, like I get it. I get the feistiness, like this was not supposed to go like this. Like we're not supposed to have these moral victory conversations this year. The expectations are incredibly high. Bob Stelton said the expectation is you make the playoffs. There is no other acceptable result to Bob Stelton. I heard the promo a bunch of times. So yeah, hearing some of the, well, you know, we kind of came back. I get why there's some frustration about that this morning as well. Alright, Brock, every day we look for these great messages that people have left us for. Here's the thing, we play them all on Thursdays. They all come through the Seattle Sports app. And let's see what we've got today. Brock Heward doesn't just hate one kid. I am so disappointed in Michael Salt. You don't know what you're talking about. You're mindless. Love you, buddy. It's time for Brock and Salt. Here's the thing. Okay, here's the thing. Alright, let's see what we got today. We'll start with Ethan Salt said he got a strawberry something from Dairy Queen. It's strawberry. Salt grew up and he loved berry bonds. He loved berry Sanders. It's berry. Well, those people's name are Barry. I got on to you about this once with you said raspberry. Raspberry strawberry. Because I don't think that's a Boston thing because I don't remember my cousins or anyone out there. Barry? Well, his name is Barry with an A. You're talking about strawberries. If you want to say it that way with an E, those are two different things. You think it's like B, E, R, R, Y bonds? One is Barry. Okay. The other is Barry. Huh? But you say Barry. You say Barry. That is an East Coast accent. Yeah, you say Barry. You are one. That's an East Coast thing. Barry. Because I think there's a difference between fairy and fairy. I think it'd be less noticeable if you said straw and then berry bonds than saying Barry. Whatever. You really say raspberry. Do you really? Strawberry. You say blueberry? Strawberry. Cranberry. Cranberry. Yeah, I just say strawberry different. And raspberry. And raspberry. Those, those I go quick. But strawberry. Strawberry. Strawberry. Yes. I don't know. Who cares? Why? Who cares? I know he was kind of A. What's matter? Who cares? Here's the thing. I guess deuces are wild for that opening series. Two wins. Two losses. And two fettuccine bombs by my guy, Dami Kans. Ciao. Thanks, Sam. Dami Kans. So Charlie Furbush and Mike Lethko on Friday when they were in for you guys were trying to come up with nicknames for him. They were talking about bomb canzone or bombonic canzone. Shannon told them they were, they were bad. I agree with her. But other people are looking for nicknames as well. Here's Eric. Here's the thing. I'm pushing for Brendan Donovan to be known as the missing link. There's a couple of reasons why I think this is such a good nickname. One, paleontologists have theorized a missing fossil that links apes to humans. And while I'm not calling Brendan Donovan a mix between apes and humans, he is pretty hairy. Number two, Brendan Donovan is clearly that missing link in the Mariners starting lineup. Thank you. Think you better over thought that one. I don't think you can call him the missing link. No, I don't think so. I like the, I like that there's so much rationale behind it though, but I don't, I don't think you can call him the missing link. Here's Adam. Here's the thing. Brock, exactly how long did it take to go from crying over the beautiful story of Gary Woodland's comeback victory after defeating brain cancer to begin judging how good his teeth looked? That's a good question. Exactly three seconds. As I was crying at him, big tears. I was like, man, this dude's got some, this has got some great teeth. Not like Matthew Stafford fake veneers. Not like that. He's got, and his wife has great teeth. They've got a great dentist. That's all I'm saying. Good to know. There's got to be some serious oral hygiene in there. I wonder how many times there's his dentist taxing them per day. You're still texting constantly. They texted me and were like, Hey, we haven't seen you. We need to make an appointment. Click the link. I clicked the link. I made an appointment. Then they called me and they're like, Hey, that's actually not a day you can make an appointment for us. Like, Oh, you texted me. I was minding my own business. Go talk to my dishwasher. Here's Sam as a cricket fan from Australia. I completely agree with Solks take on the review system within MLB in cricket. We bought in a similar system and the umpire, there is a clause where there's umpires, call, which is if it's within half a ball of out or not out, it goes to umpires call. So you could bring in a similar system and, you know, whether it's an inch or inch and a half or whatever or half a ball, then I think that is a fair thing because it's not a perfect system. Thanks. Was that an animal and Sam Roland Smith's background there? I don't know what was going on. I thought it was crickets, which I actually thought was funny since he's talking about cricket. This ain't cricket. This ain't cricket. This ain't cricket. Did you know that? Did you know cricket had no, I don't know anything about cricket. Could you watch cricket and understand the game at all? Years and years ago, I was on vacation and my dad and I went to watch cricket at like a pickup cricket game. Uh huh. And some guy was trying to explain it to us. No chance. The most complex, confusing thing. And it was like, it was like, like theoretical calculus. It was so hard to understand. Yeah. My dad's best friend is Australian. They tried to explain it to me once and the games take days at a time. I can kind of under, you know, I can understand rugby enough, Aussie rules enough. I got nothing for you on cricket. Nothing. Here's Jessica. Here's the thing. Back in my day, cable television was for the rich. Our phones plugged into walls and we didn't even know what the internet was. So we listened to this box called the radio that had voices to tell us about the game. And those voices were Dave Nehouse and Rick Riz. And it was wonderful. And so now you're telling me that I can pay $100 to get around 150 games on a personal computer that I hold in my hand and I can take with me anywhere I want. And that if I want to listen to the other 12 games, I can listen for free. No blackouts on the very radio I'm listening to right now or the Seattle Sports app and people are complaining about this. Honestly, kids these days. Not only that, but those other 12 games you can also watch on various other platforms. They're just the national games. Two other things I need to add here. I just want to say my shot at Matthew Stafford's veneers and call for it. I have no issue with the nearest. If you go that route, I've got 0.00 issue with that. Secondly, Jessica kind of reminds me. This is a bold statement about because Taylor Sheridan's made some great series. Yellowstone kind of start of it. And Molly and I tuned into Madison last night. Madison has gotten reviews like this is Taylor Sheridan's best. You got to watch the song. Really good. And you and your girlies will love it. Wow. Only six episodes. Michelle Pfeiffer's unbelievable. I like her. I like her. And Kurt Russell. I mean, you got to. Did you ever see the movie season? Like did you ever watch Heller Highwater? Kurt Russell. Yes. Taylor Sheridan. Oh, Kurt Russell is not in that. No, Jeff Bridges. You ever see Heller Highwater? Yes. Yes. Was Jeff Bridges? Yes. That was Taylor Sheridan. I think so. I'm with you, Jessica. I think people are being a little whiny about this. Not going to lie. These are all the same people who kept saying, cut the cord, Salk. Why don't you cut the cord? You're so old school. Cut the cord. Why don't you cut the cord? It's cheaper. It's better. Everything's better when you cut the cord. What do you think happens when you cut the cord? Everything goes to streaming platforms. That baby comes out. You cut that in. Did you? No. No, I'll see you. I'm going to have to deal with that. Brent's going to finish this up. Here's the thing. Salk and I went to the UFC fights on Saturday at Climate Pledge. And it was a great time. Good batch of fights. Our fighters from the Northwest represented well. Washingtonian Michael Chisaya got a storybook ending to his long career in his retirement fight. Miguel Alexegrosso got a huge statement win with one of the scariest knockouts I've ever seen. Overall, great night. But I want to apologize to everyone for Salk's behavior. He kept asking people if they wanted to rassle. He was shouting crude things at Bruce Buffer. And the worst part was he took his shirt off to reveal he had shaved his chest. So it said, just bleed in hair, which was both disgusting and embarrassing. And no, Salk, I still do not want you to put me in a rear naked choke. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. That was a really weird way to end. Doesn't sound like you at all. Sounds like Brent might be having a hallucinogenic experience because none of that happens. All right. Well, that's how you can leave us messages. Maybe even better. That was not the best batch we've had. So you guys can do better. Leave us messages. We'll get to them next week. I know. That's on me. He is asking that people send in questions for him joining us at 8.30 tomorrow. Tomorrow? No. What do you mean no? Oh. You don't want that? Oh, questions on the text? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So if you have questions or anything you want G to talk about tomorrow at 8.30, go to the Seattle Sports app and leave us a message there and we will play the best for G if they come in for tomorrow. All right. Let's see. We'll give you everything you need to know. And then Daniel Jeremiah is going to join us in 20 minutes. We're talking draft, which is now just what? Like four weeks away? Crazy. Three? Three weeks. Three weeks away? Oh my gosh. It's Brock and Salk. All right. All right. So we're going to start with the final question. What is the best way to get a job? At least leave Town Brock 4 and 3 with a winning record. Unfortunately, the bats just not able to do anything against Cam Schlittler. Really the third straight game against the Yankees where the bats were held down by the starter. He goes what six and a third, gave up just two hits, no walks, struck out seven. They were not able to do much of anything. And the pitching was really good. We faced some really tough pitching and no question about it. We faced some tough starters here with the Yankees and they kept us a little quiet. But again, seeing what some of the bats later in the ball game today and the way the guys have continued to make their adjustments, I think we've got good things to come for sure. So that was the offensive side of it. The pitching side, Kirby was okay. I mean, he went six innings. He unfortunately allowed four, three of them here. One one from George swung on hit high deep left field. Arosa Rainer back. He said the track looking up it is gone into the Mariners bullpen. Paul Goldschmidt three run homerun and with one swing, the Yankees now leave for nothing. And that walks in home run strategy still works. Yeah, still works. Yeah, that's usually the Mariners strategy and big formula the last couple of years and not enough walks the last couple days. Really elite pitching with those Yankees. No long ball, no home run in three games after what eight in the first four. And obviously the middle lineup not having the kind of opening home stand that any of those guys would have would have wanted. Nor would I have thought honestly on my bingo card what I have seen three for 53 from Naylor and Julio. They're at three and four. Count least had a couple big hits and big RBI's in the game winner and everything else. But you're not the start and good news for them is they get out of town and it's going to be in the low 80s. They like to hit in Anaheim and then on to Texas and hopefully the middle of that lineup will warm up because the bottom lineup done their part. Yeah, the role players really all series, both series long. They were the ones grinding. They were the ones getting things done. Just need to compliment that with the boys in the middle. JP Crawford still waiting for a second rehab start to come. It got rained out last night. So hopefully he can get in there tonight and kind of start to get himself ready to go. Here's the second thing you need to know. That's a good sound from Mike McDonald Brock. I did enjoy this. He was asked about the best part of winning the Super Bowl. I don't know. You know what's funny is like it's really cool. And I don't really think about it until someone brings it up to me. Like because you feel like I'm the same person, you know, which is I think it puts everything in perspective. This is why are we actually doing what we do? It's really just like to defend our way of life, you know, that like we can we can be Seahawks and being great emphasis on people and enjoy the people that were like joy. How we go about our business and that people were with every day. If we would have lost again, I would have felt probably would have felt the same and felt the same about our team. Like that same amount of pride and what we were able to accomplish last year. Defend our way of life. Pay off all these convictions that we have. There's really no sweeter feeling. He doesn't need to go golf. He doesn't need to rub shoulders than anybody doesn't need to day drink. Yeah, it's just not going to fill his his tank. But for him to and he talked a lot to us about that. It's kind of the faith that the guys had to have in him the faith that they had to have in the convictions from one another and the way they were going to go about it. And then to see that payoff and be at the very top and be in the middle of the picture. Yeah, I think you'd like to run. I think you'd like to do that again. It's funny. He ended up focusing on, you know, what it was to be a Seahawk and the and a lot of the strategy that they use. But when I first heard just the phrase defend our way of life, I actually was wondering if he was going to say it be essentially meant it as well. All of the work that I do like all of the hours and hours and hours that all of us spend. Yeah, sacrificing time away from our families and all like it all paid off because we did the thing that we were setting out to do. We achieved the goal. So he didn't mean it that way. But I wonder if he could have because I would think that would have have a pretty big role in it as well. I did like this sound too on adding an edge. Hey, would you add an edge now the boy Mofi is out. If there was a right opportunity, probably would have done it. It's just like the right like match up like hasn't happened yet. You know, so it's kind of one of those things like don't press it and maybe there'll be another like either through the draft or maybe after the draft free agency or something through training camp or our guys to our guys rock in a role and they play great and we'll roll the guys we have. Yep, market conditions. Not right. First wave not going to happen. Second wave. That really happened draft could have happened the right value at the right round at the right pick and everything else in May after the draft. Some of these veterans that don't end up anywhere. Talk to Daniel Jeremiah here in about 10 minutes and we can ask him if there are some edge rushers that would fit for them in the draft. Here's the third day you need to know the Pukinakua thing, Brock. It's not that I don't want to give him credit. It just doesn't quite feel right. So he's going to he's checked into this rehab clinic in Malibu. It does feel I don't know the fact that it's a rehab clinic in Malibu feels just a little PR ish. I don't want to say fake. That's not fair. But it does feel like what you see celebrities do when you know they get a little bit of trouble and just check into one of these fancy Malibu rehab centers. And I hope that you know for his sake and the sake of the people around him, it's not just PR. We heard this from less need last week. Well, definitely I know this. Yeah, Pukin is a young man becoming. So, you know, it's our job to help him develop not only on the field off that's going to be on us and he's getting there. And hey, what he's done on the field speaks for itself. He's definitely somebody that we want to be a part of. Right. This this our ecosystem our team for a long time. You think that that is what he's done off the field also speaks for itself and he's spying. He's spiraling out of control. So I hope whether it's PR, whatever it is, I hope he gets his life under control because it was spiraling and spiraling. It's spiraling very badly. Yeah. All right. That's everything you need to know. Crack and I'll play tonight against the mammoth. They are back home. We're getting near a must win territory for the. It's not quite. Thankfully, everybody else keeps losing. But it's getting close. Yes. It's not quite there. Nine games to go. It's getting to be pretty close. All right. Daniel Jeremiah is going to join us every. It's generally going to be Wednesdays again, but every week leading up to the draft and then for a couple of weeks afterwards to break down everything that's happened. The Seahawks have four picks. What are they going to do with them? Well, we'll ask DJ those questions and more next on Brock and Salk. We'll see what's really happening and act faster. Stop running your business on highlights. You think Lyle played this because you came in singing Led Zeppelin this morning? Absolutely not. Me neither. I think it's complete luck. 100, 100, 100, 100. Absolute chance. There was no thought process put into that at all, but you know, you did come in singing Led Zeppelin and Brock even knew it was Led Zeppelin. Which kind of blew me away. I was not expecting that this morning. You're trying to evolve. You're trying to evolve or die. I appreciate that about you. Evolve or die. Daniel and Jeremiah are going to be with us here in just a moment or two. We're just figuring out the video link as once again our technology is trying to fell us here, Brock, in the mornings. That's okay. I'm sure it'll work soon. What do you think of the three-round mock that Morris sent us? I actually seen that right when I woke up. So it was like what, Field Yates, Mel Kuiper, our guy Matt Miller, and what's the guy's name? Cam. Slitler? No, the other guy. Anyway, they did a nice, that's me that you're talking to. I can hear you. Sorry, Lyle. They did a three-round mock. Three-round. Yep, three-round. They went edge-cold. They did is a edge corner running back. That's right. They went to the Seahawks three biggest perceived voids as far as the roster would look now with personnel leaving. All right. Well, let's let me let me cut you off there, Brock, because we have Daniel and Jeremiah. We figured it out. Out. DJ, good morning. How are you? Oh my gosh, it's great to be back, boys. How are we doing? How are the Mariners doing right now? Is it playing well? Not really. Kind of rough start. Three and four. Game better than the pods. The pods are two and four. Yeah. Yeah, it's early. It's early. So, we're going to be playing our first must-win game of the year, though. Wow. Game six. How to go? So, we won. Oh, cute. So, this season gets to continue after that? Yes. I was talking to somebody this morning and said there's only 27 more must-win games before the season. So, that was the first one today. How much master's equipment and gear did you end up buying? A lot. A lot. How much did you spend on gear while you were there? Over under a thousand bucks. Over. You spent more than a thousand dollars just on clothing there and gear? Yeah, I was not well received when I got home. Was I talking about pre-trip with the wife? I apologize in advance. No numbers were ever negotiated. I think I got out the door for 1800. Whoa. Yeah. So, essentially, that's a full wardrobe. And the funny thing was, the guys I was with were all buying so much stuff for so many people. And I was pretty much buying for myself. Is it like the sandwiches and concessions where it's pretty cheap? Or is it not? Or do they make their money on the gear because it's not on the goods? It was like fair price. It was a fair price. I mean, you can have different however nice you want to be. I mean, it was very cold the day I played. So, I convinced myself I needed this super heavy sweater thing that I'll never wear in San Diego ever again. I don't know. That was my most expensive item. That was not. I was in, I got caught up. Just think about where you, when you're checking out at the grocery store and that like the little, the candy or the chapstick or whatever, how many times have you made that purchase? Except in this case, it was maybe a $400 sweater. Watch this segue. Watch this segue. You know who doesn't get caught up in market conditions? The Seahawks DJ. Everybody else spends. Everybody else gets all emotional in the Seahawks. They just stay in path, right? They don't get affected by the waves of free agency. They don't get affected by the noise, right? Isn't that the story of the last month and a half since we talked to you last? Yeah. They have conviction and belief in their process and it's, there's proof in the pudding coming off of a Super Bowl, but they didn't, they didn't overpay. They got the deals done that they felt were proper deals and fair deals and didn't stretch it. And now they'll rely on their, you know, their talent acquisition as we go into the draft, which John's been exceptional at. It's easier to be confident when you've got the, when you've got the trophy and it's, you know, it's a pretty good indication your process works. Did any of the guys that walked out the door concern you? Not necessarily. I think they're all, I mean, not to be callous, but I think they all are replaceable. I think there's good players obviously in that group of guys, but I, and I don't think, you know, for the roles that they were playing and where they were, I don't think they're going to be, you know, a lot of times you think about, man, you lose a left tackle, you lose your starting premier edge rusher, a defensive tackle, like those are going to require high pick, you know, high picks or high dollars in free agency to replace. I think the guys that they, that they lost, they can replace in, you know, a second, third, fourth, fifth round picks. You get that sense when you were at the combine. Did you kind of get that sense from John and the organization that the Ken walkers and the boy Moffays and the reek woolens and there were going to be a lot more departures than there were going to be keeping those. Yeah. I was curious about the Walker one. So I'm talking to someone with the team about that. It was, look, he was awesome down the stretch and we, you know, we love him, but we are, you know, they feel confident in their ability to, to identify and, and bring in a running back. So that was the one I was most curious about. You look, when you come off the Super Bowl, he came off of it would be easy to say, okay, we're comfortable maybe paying overpaying a little bit here. And they just didn't, they just had. He was the MVP DJ. I know. MVP, but they didn't bet. That's why, that's why I posed the question because that was the one where it's like, well, of all of them, that one would probably be the easiest sell to pay a little bit above what you'd like to pay. And they didn't do it. I, I, for me, the one is boy Moffay. And I feel like I'm the only one in, certainly in this room was talked about it at all. Brock or Buddy Brady Henderson, they just keep being like, yeah, it's fine. And I'm sure they're right. Like it's not like, I think it's panic for get the next season because boy, Moffay is gone, but you know, having four guys coming off the edge like that sure seemed to be a pretty important part of their success. I'm not just, teed up this way, teed up this way. Then how many way Moffays are there in this upcoming exactly where I was going to go with it. I, I, the funny thing is I looked this up before we started today. Um, and that was the one question and I knew that soft would ask it. So I already had it queued up and ready to go because I was trying to find those types of guys are Mason Thomas is in, is in the back end of my top 50. He's the absolute home run pick who would, who would fit. He was, uh, he was, he was there. The mock that ESPN put out today, the three round mock. I think it was field Yates who did the Seahawks pick and he had, yeah, that's what he had at number 32. Oh, there you go. So that's a good one. So who is he? Why is he a home run? Who is he? Why is it a home run? Sure. I'll, uh, I'll pull up my notes on him here. Um, our Mason Thomas, like to me, like he, he plays, he's got an extremely, you know, explosive getoff. He plays with big energy. He's got active hands. Um, you know, he's not the biggest guy in the world. It's 241 pounds, but I thought he played bigger than that played violent. Um, there's a touch of tightness in there, but to me, it's just the effort and the energy and the, the juice that he brings off the edge. He's the perfect to me on a great team. I saw it, you know, on a team that obviously didn't end up being great, but the chargers had away, but when I got 25 million bucks as their third rusher, like that to me, he's a, as the number two rusher on a team, he's good. He's a good player. You maybe you wanted a little more, but when he's your number three rusher, and he's part of that rotation, you're keeping him fresh and he's just throwing fastballs the whole time. I'm a Armys and Thomas fan. I did say that his name, his name, by the way, Brock is a, it's an author's name. So I mean, if he hasn't written the book yet, if Scott Fitzgerald, Armys Thomas, yeah, I get that. So he loves that. You have others on that list. Let me give you a little bit of G Gordon lady. So that cuts both ways. Let me give you, let me give you a little Seahawk perspective on this that John shared, I think a month and a half ago or so, and he's got to show every Thursday. It's awesome with our afternoon guys. And he talked about one of the adjustments they made was actually like tightening up their board that it felt like things maybe got away when it was like, oh, we got to fill them. We got to do that. And then the board got too big and they've narrowed the scope a little bit. So if I narrow the scope of these edge guys, you're going to continue to rattle off and I say to you, DJ, put it through the filter of the most rugged because I don't think boy, my face is a Seahawk because that was the one area. I think he was limited compared to his peers in that room. Give me the most rugged edge fit then. Yeah. The most rugged edge fit. I would give you two guys and this is, I'm looking at 64 for that spot there. I would say Derek Moore from Michigan and Gabe Atkins from Illinois and Gabe Atkins probably the most, if you're just going purely rugged, I would probably list him just above Derek Moore, but they're my 11th and 12th guys. They're, they're both just outside my top 50. I think picked 64 is kind of the range for those guys. I would also throw a guy like Max Llewellyn who don't get carried away with a slower 40 time out of Iowa. He, he's, his 10 was fine. He had six sacks. He plays a real rugged brand of football, incredible effort chase. He's got some power and uses the length. So Max Llewellyn would be another guy with thrown to that mix. What does rugged mean to you? Rugged, I think of violent. I think of someone who there's a different way that you can get off of a block. In other words, like you can slip blocks, you can try and get through them. And then there's guys who will kind of stack blocks and hang on blocks. Then they're the rugged guys are who are going to latch you, grab you by the chest. And there's just a violent tug and pull and throw and they just refused to be blocked. Like that, that to me is a rugged, rugged player. They don't, they don't stay blocked. Derek Hall fit that bill. Derek Hall speed to power. I would say at the point of attack, I'd have to go back and pay more attention to him as a pure point of attack player, but he was a speed to power guy coming out of college. Mm hmm. Hey, we learned a couple of things, DJ and our time away these couple of months. We've had some sounds. We had sound yesterday that made all of us just perk our ears and like, that's DJ. And of all people, it was Phillip Rivers. Do you know what you and Phillip haven't? No, I don't love you both love numbers. So we had him on and asked him and he was like, oh, that number three, that number three for the Seahawks. And then he, it kept going. You better. You got to add a set like because he didn't say number. He just said three, three. They don't say number. They just say, well, three did this, 18 did that. Like there's no, yeah, they don't say number. You and Phillip Rivers, huh? Well, it's because, you know, he spent that time around me at the end of his career. That must have been that. Charger. Yeah, that must have been it. He's a, I, he was one, like I would love it if you go into the meal room on a road trip and he was happened to be in there by himself, which was rare because everybody kind of always wanted to gravitate towards him, but to sit down with him and then like he, we would talk about college players and he wouldn't, he didn't know their names, you know, as shoot at that time of the year. So I don't know a lot of their names, but he would be like, the little guy, you watch the little guy, that little quarterback. He can't play. He's little. That's what he said about Russell Wilson. Weird. All the way back then. That's, that's crazy. So how bad is this draft? We keep hearing from everybody. It's awful. How bad is it? I'm stoked for next year's draft. But I, I, it's an intriguing draft. I, this is the way I sell it. Um, and I said, that's not a good sign, by the way. If you're having to say, this is the way I sell it. No, it's not a good sign. Hey, I work at NFL Network and we're still going to do a draft show. So let me sell it. No, there's starters, starters over stars. So there's, there's a good number of starters here in this draft. Um, there's not as there's a lot of prospects that have some holes. So they're not getting perfect players, but you are going to be able to get a lot of starters. And I think especially day two, second and third round, interior offensive linemen. Um, you're going to see wide outs. You're going to see corners, safeties, like there's guys that are going to be solid, solid starters and you can build out the guts of your team that way. I would rather be picking, you know, 25 than, than maybe seven in this draft. Like, you know, it, as compared to other drafts and next year, I think we have more of that star power, but, um, you can get, you can get a handful of, of really solid contributing players in this draft. Okay. So let me, let me hit you then with the Seahawks, probably four biggest needs. You gave us a couple of good Seahawk potentials at edge. So I'll skip that one for now. Give you the other three, uh, in no particular order, corner running back and interior offensive line against center, right guard. Are there, are there, are there good solid starters at any of those three positions that would fit here in Seattle? Yeah, I would say the corner position, a thousand percent. Um, I feel great about that. The interior offensive linemen, no doubt. Um, I, if, where they're picking 64, 96, either one of those spots, they can get a player that's a, that'll be a starting caliber player, um, with one of those two picks, the running back thing to me is a little trickier. Um, I think it's a very shallow pool. For me, there's the two noted aim kids. There's a big drop off after them. Um, and then, you know, there's some intriguing guys, but I'm curious to see how they evaluate it and where they value, you know, taking a running back at what point in time they would do that. I, I don't envision a world 64. I don't, I don't, you know, really see that as a good marriage with that position. I think they're probably, I wouldn't even be surprised if they took a couple swings on day three, you know, traded back. If they're able to trade back in one, get some extra picks, they need more picks. Uh, but if they could collect some more picks, even day three picks, I could see them attacking the running back position with maybe a couple guys. And DJ, I have heard from a few different NFL folks. I don't know where you sit on this. Yeah. I saw your top 50 list you put out this week and you were at Fernando's pro day yesterday. I've heard from some NFL folks that the single best player in this draft is the running back Jeremiah Love. And it's kind of what, and then obviously the safety downs is way up there and an offline backers way up there. And it's why it does complicate this draft. Cause those are not positions called D end and quarterback and everything else. If Jeremiah love starts to just slip a little bit, if they go QB and then they go to go house, take kids and then a couple of tackles. And I saw a proposal that the Seahawks could trade 32 and next year's first to move up to eight or nine in the draft. And they deem Jeremiah love to be the best player in this draft. Do you take a swing like that? Is he that caliber? I love him. Um, he's my second player. So I'm really way off from the masses on that one. Um, but man, you know, look, I could make it either way. I mean, is he say, Juan Barkley? Is he? No, no, say, one is, say, one is, say, one is in his own category for me over the guys over the last several years. I, to me, he's in the, he is in the Bijan or Bajan, as we're pronouncing it now, the Bajan category. He's in the Jameer Gibbs category. Like he's in, in that company, which is excellent company. If you're the Seahawks and you're sitting there thinking, okay, it's a 32 this year in a draft, it's not great. And we are hoping that we're going to be picking 32 again next year. Um, then if it all worked out that way, heck, yeah, I would do that trade just because it puts you right there. And the Rams have been making a push. I'd be scared about the Rams trying to trade up to get him. I mean, that, that's the one that I keep an eye on. I know Kyron Williams has been productive, but he's not, he's not dynamic. He, he doesn't get a lot of stuff that isn't just there. They have a good offensive line. And I think there's, if they had, you know, the original Todd Gurley, before he got hurt in this version of the Rams, it'd be pretty scary. Um, so I could see them if he started to drift a little bit, they're at 13, that they might do something. So if you're Seattle, you can go up there and get him, you know, address a big need on your roster, um, get a dynamic player that maybe keeps you ahead of the Rams and the arm race arms race and blocks them from getting them. I mean, I could, I could sell myself on doing that. Be the weirdest off season ever spend $225 million on wide receivers, then go spend a bunch of money on a defensive back and then go trade up for a running back. That would be the strangest. I mean, I, I'm not saying that any of those moves in and of themselves would be wrong, but man, does that feel the opposite of trenches, trenches, trenches, and all of the reasons why the Seahawks just won the Super Bowl. But if, if the scenario that you just gave me, you didn't touch 64 and 96, and I'm telling you right now, like the offensive linemen, you can get at 64 to, to start and be an upgrade at the guard spot is not going to be much different than the guard you would get if you stuck and picked it 32. I don't think that's much of different. So it's still addressing that need. You know how sulky is. You've gotten to know him over the years, like when he gets on you, it's just like a cobra, just like the fangs getting your neck and you just like, dude, just get off of me. So he's been on me about, cause I said yesterday, hard knocks is coming this summer, which will be awesome. And some of the guys that could be stars and I left open the opportunity that one of the three biggest stars could be a rookie. They draft there could be a rookie running back. Could be a rookie linemen, a rookie edge, a rookie player. It's going to come on to this team, this Super Bowl winning roster and be that impactful. And he was like, you better ask DJ about that. Cause I'm not buying some rookie kind of that. That's not what I said. That kind of making this up. What is wrong with you? That kind of impact. He just, he just shoot me down and a John Bon Jovi plays a glory. Not what I said. Can they find that at 32, 64, 96? Well, let me ask a question. Do you think there's any chance they pick at 32? Yeah, they're having a draft party, DJ. Okay. They wouldn't have a draft party, right? So I'm going to remember when the bears invited Mike Glenn into a draft party as they took his replacement and Mitchell Trubisky. So the draft party thing, I don't know if there's always the best communication in departments there. Brady Henderson, our buddy told us they've made their first pick in every drafts in like seven or eight years. Like they've actually taken, well, they had two years where they didn't have that or one year anyway, where they didn't have a first round pick, but they have made their first pick actually a lot more often. Now they haven't been picking at 32. So how many picks do they have total four, four, four? Yeah. I think a four. No way they're picking at 32, but it's a bad draft. I'm just telling you, they're not, they're not picking at 32. I'll be shocked. Okay. Because there is a fifth year benefit for somebody if they, you know, there's just, you just need one team to want to move up a couple spots. Yeah. And that was one of the other trade scenarios this week. I gave you the Jeremiah Love. The other one was a Pittsburgh comes back and gets Ty Simpson or somebody gets Ty Simpson. And then all of a sudden you add a 50 and a third and a, you know, and a fifth and you are able then to, to add some depth. You see that, that one is a more realistic possible. Yeah. To me, I, I think they'll trade back. I just think, I think they'll have opportunities. And I think this is a draft where we've just talked about it. It's more of a quantity than a quality. So I think you would want some more pops at it. So that's how I look at it. And look, there's always a chance I've been on teams where you dying to get out and you're stuck and there's no phone doesn't ring and you're sticking pick, but I would say I think at that pick, I think they'll have a chance to get out of there. Who is the Penn State guard that I heard you talk about? So where does he go? If you, I mean, you talked about Brock talked about trading up all the way up to get a running back. Is he good enough to be worth trading up for in the first round? I mean, if you could trade up just, you know, you know, a modest move and then maybe it's a third round pick next year or something you're partner with next year preserving your one next year, I wouldn't trade a future one for a guard. But the, this is it. I think he's the best, you make a stronger, he means the best overall offensive lineman in the draft. Sure, he's the best guard for me. So, and I look at the Chargers are 22 Pittsburgh's 21. That's probably the neighborhood you'd have to get to because both those teams haven't needed that position. If he were to get down there, I mean, the Ravens could take him at 14. He's a, he's a really, really good player, but man, that line, that would be, that would be an unbelievable pair of guards. If they were able to pull that off with a pretty good pair of tackles as well. No question. Yeah, be loaded. Yeah, that would check your, I mean, doesn't that sound more valuable than trading all the way up for a running back? Like, okay, if you have those four guys, that running back is Christian McCaffrey or B John Robinson, and he's the best player in this, but if you have those, if that's your offensive line, can't you make do with a lot of different running backs? No, it's a fair point. I, to me, I just think there's the rare guys, the rare running backs. And I think this kid falls into that category. And I do think there is a difference in how that offense runs when you have like a premier, premier guy, it's just, it's going to look different. I mean, I just go back to the Saquon example. And I, again, I rate him just below Saquon, but Saquon Barclays, you know, what he was with the giants, you can argue against the running back position. Then he goes to a team with a good offensive line and you're like, this guy's a 2000 yard rusher and leads the team to a Super Bowl. That's the type of impact you can get. So that's where I could say this kid is, you know, he's, he's in the right company of backs. Is there anybody in the company of Nick Eman, Warry in this draft? No. The kid had to lead him. The safety. I love he's my, he's, yeah, he's one of my favorite players, my 16th overall player, which is ironic. I think I have to go back. I think even Warry was my 16th player in last year's draft. So, um, but no, he's, he's not as thick. He's, you know, like a little over 200 pounds, 205 pounds, but six, three and a half, you know, splash plays, big hits, rangy interceptions. He, he's a little bit, I like him a little bit more away from the ball, whereas Nick was dynamic, you know, as he got close to the line of scrimmage, but he is, uh, he's a really good player. He's my second safety. Um, I have him just behind downs and we feel like weeks out. Are you ready? Like if you had to do the draft tomorrow, you ready? Yeah, no, I'm ready. I've got some non-combine guys. I got to scoot through and, and, uh, and clean up. I, we, we call this time of the year, the chasing ghosts period where, Hey, did you hear this kid ran? Now he's never played, but he ran four, three, five at the pro day and his, and his uncle, you know, played. So maybe you can like that's the, that's the path on the other side of that. What'd you see from Mendoza yesterday? It was good. I mean, I call those a proof of life pro days. Just hold up the newspaper, make sure that you're alive. You're going to be the first overall pick. Um, but he's big. I mean, I was the first thing I noticed is 200, 238 pounds. And you see his lower, like his, his kind of Andrew Luck, he's got a Andrew Luck body. Yeah. Not as dynamic, not as, not, it didn't run like Andrew, but as far as like, I'm, when I watch that yesterday and I listen to it, like there's a lot of Andrew, like he's not into this new agey, you know, QB country, whip the hips, all of this, like disassociation, he's just a big old grinder man. And then he, he barked, he barking out the place yesterday. Oh yeah. Yeah. And he was calling out the players and who the ball was going to and all that stuff. I mean, I, he's his own man too, man. He's his own dude. He's very quirky. That's the word that I've used. He's quirky, but his teammates, that was what I, you know, what I was trying to watch is, you know, we, there was a long time we were waiting for him to throw. So we were on the air for a long time. He interacted with a lot of people on the sideline, interact with his teammates, like always big smile on his face. So I, I got an interesting, uh, uh, Texas morning from, uh, one of my buddies who had worked at elite 11 when he was coming through and he sent me his high school coach's questionnaire when he had first, I mean, he obviously was a two star recruit. He, you know, had the, was going to walk on a cow until, you know, he won freed up late. And this was the questionnaire from his high school coach at that time. Uh, uh, great leader constantly rallies his teammates, hardest worker, most positive player we've ever had in our program. Straight A student has some IV offers, brought us back twice in the, twice in the fourth quarter of the championship game this year. Once after he threw a pick six for a TD, it didn't phase him. His dad rode crew at Brown incredibly high work ethic and football IQ. But I mean, even just a little nugget about how he made a mistake and then came back from it, um, you see that that kind of goes back to his, his, uh, his trace story. That's so funny how, I mean, that, that really has become the hidden secret weapon for evaluators. I was playing sound from Dan Wilson last week, right? During, right after they sent down their kid, Colt Emerson, and he was like, well, what impressed you is like, well, actually he struggled for a week and a half and then found his way back out of it. And like it was really constantly amazes me how often we hear that grit component, however you want to phrase it or however you want to describe it, how important it is for these guys, because they're going to struggle at some point eventually. So pretty cool. If I could learn that lesson on the golf course, it would really help me. Yeah. It just spirals. And I think you can do it. You can do it. Just put on one of those 16 polos. Play around with Salky. Play around with Salky. Augusta. Yeah. I'd have to take the tags off. Yeah. You can sell those on eBay. No, no, don't even joke about that. Don't come after you. Let's go. Whoa, don't even joke. We got to go. We're late. Let's go. DJ, we'll talk to you next week. Thanks buddy. See you guys. All right. Every week with Daniel Jeremiah leading up to the draft and a couple of weeks after, we'll be right back on Brock and Silk.
