Summary

Red Eye Radio hosts Gary McNamara and Eric Harley analyze the ongoing Nancy Guthrie kidnapping case in Arizona, discussing surveillance footage analysis, the detention of a person of interest near the Mexican border, and Bitcoin account activity. The second segment pivots to tax policy, examining how California's jock tax causes NFL players like Sam Darnold to lose money after Super Bowl wins, and broader implications of high-tax states driving billionaires and corporations to relocate.

Insights
  • Surveillance footage analysis suggests the alleged perpetrator may be an amateur criminal based on awkward movements, weapon handling, and delayed reaction to doorbell camera—indicating lack of planning sophistication despite wearing disguise
  • California's jock tax system creates perverse incentive where athletes lose money on Super Bowl earnings, potentially influencing player free agency decisions and team competitiveness across NFL
  • High-tax state policies are accelerating billionaire and corporate migration to low-tax states, creating structural budget vulnerabilities in blue states dependent on top earner tax revenue
  • Bitcoin wallet monitoring and cell tower pinging appear to be key investigative tools in modern kidnapping cases, with activity potentially triggering law enforcement action
  • Family members living with suspects often remain unaware of criminal activity, making proximity to investigation subjects unreliable indicator of guilt or innocence

Now, it's Red Eye Radio. Gary McNamara and Eric Harley talk about everything from politics to social issues and news of the day. Whether you're up late or you're just starting your day, welcome to the show from the Uniden America Studios. This is Red Eye Radio. All across America, we are Red Eye Radio. He is Eric Hurley, and I'm Gary McNamara. The show's already started. We don't know where you people have been. It was one of those days yesterday. I went shopping. I got back home, and all of a sudden, you know, there's the breaking news on TV. So, you know, following the case in Arizona. Right. And it's just, you know, it seemed to be changing every couple of minutes, and the video coming out. And then tonight that they've got a search warrant, even though they didn't need one because the woman apparently allowed them in the house. And she says they're looking at her son-in-law. His name is Carlos. I have a last name, but I haven't been able to verify it. The last name from a news source that I trust at the moment. The name is out there, but it's Carlos, she said. And I heard her say the name, and I just couldn't understand it. I can't relate it to whether the name that I have is the same one that the woman said. But she was interviewed by CNN. And we'll get to that here in just a little bit. And she said that her son-in-law, who apparently is the person of interest, has a white van, delivers for – well, he's a delivery guy, whether it's for Amazon, whoever he delivers for. I'm not sure exactly who that is, what company that is at the moment here. uh and uh but uh uh he and his wife apparently just recently moved in with her oh all right uh waiting for their tax refunds so they can get an apartment whatever uh she said she nothing she knows nothing about bitcoin knew about the kidnapping but didn't pay attention to it because she said when i read the news if i don't know the person who they are i just move on to something else and right yeah but we'll have that coming up here in a little bit you know the the uh the video The video, the one thing that came out on the video yesterday, and you and I were talking about it, it was the first thing that I noticed of the video of the alleged abductor. Right. The first thing I noticed was if you know anything, if you know anything about security cameras, by the time you get to the door, they've got the picture. Now, again, it took, what, nine days because she didn't subscribe to Nest. Right. But, you know, and many people had that system. I've got that system. Right. And so somebody walks in. Well, you know, I've got the cloud, the cloud service. So they walk in. It's over. They walk up to the camera. Well, you've got it. And for the abductor to walk out, grab the plant, and then come back again and be in the view of the camera the entire time, I'm looking at this and I think you were looking at it the same way saying is something wrong with this person? Is something wrong the way that they think? The way that he was carrying his gun was weird, was really odd and then he responded to a doorbell cam as if it was the first time he'd ever noticed one he's wearing a ski mask So he went to the extent of covering his face. He's wearing gloves. Again, he's wearing his gun in a weird position. I mean, assuming it's a real gun, don't know. But wearing that in a weird position. And then when he sees the doorbell cam, you can tell he reacts immediately. He tries to put his hand in front of it. Then he turns around and he's moving pretty slowly. And just kind of, he's kind of looking around and grabs some weeds or something out of the garden and tries to put them over the camera. Then that's the end of the video. So the guy who created the Nest system said that there must have been at some point an account because it ended up in the cloud. And he said that basically what he was saying is we don't keep your data unless that's the case. There wouldn't have been that backup in the cloud unless at some point there was some kind of subscription. That's what he was saying about that. He said, because I designed that system, he was telling media, I think it was Fox Business, but he was saying that is something that you would have to have an account for. But luckily they did. The FBI went and they got that from Nest. And that's what took so long. That's why we didn't see it until now is because they had to get that from the back end system. Well, the way the guy is moving, the way he's carrying the weapon, the way he reacted to the doorbell cam, just reeks of not just amateur, just I don't, he just didn't seem to be fully aware of anything. You know what I mean? He just didn't seem to be a very, he doesn't seem to be a very smart person. Again, he's wearing a ski mask. He's wearing gloves. So he thought it through to that point. But this is not this doesn't seem like, you know, if you're talking about a high someone related to a high profile individual. Right. And a plan, you know, a big master plan where people are involved in. I think they're going to end up, you know, with millions of dollars or something in ransom. You know, this person, the way he responded in just that short video, the way he was acting in that short video, didn't look like somebody smart enough to pull anything off. Let's hope and pray that Nancy Guthrie is found alive and this individual hasn't done something more horrendous. Well, it was interesting. And again, you and I, I don't know about you, but I fell asleep about 6 and woke up about 10. And that's when I woke up. It's when I saw all this stuff was going on. And what I found interesting is TMZ was saying that they can't tell you what, but there was something happening with the Bitcoin account. Yeah, they've been watching that wallet, which you can do. Right. Anybody can do, but they've been watching that particular wallet, and they can't tell you what's going on, but they can tell you there was some activity. But something happened, and it seemed like, and I wasn't awake, so I don't know the exact time frame. Right. But it seemed like that happened, and boom, this guy is detained. And it was a traffic stop. And so are those two related to each other, or are they separate? Right. Are there is, you know, are they looking at did they do something to the Bitcoin account, whatever they did, whatever the movement was in order to go after that person who might not even be related to this particular case? Right. It's related either. You know, I don't know you. There are things you can do at at ATMs and banks with Bitcoin. There are things you can do on the fly. And then, of course, if the most obvious for me, the most obvious would be watching, because this is what everybody was asking about. You watch for certain pings on a cell tower unique during that time period of when she disappeared. That Saturday night into that Sunday morning, there's going to be less activity in general. so it would be easy for you to isolate certain cell activity in that area. And then if that's where the FBI went with it and they isolated all that down to one or two possible accounts, and then those accounts, one of those accounts is related to some Bitcoin activity, maybe that's what led them to the developments that we saw in recent hours. I don't know. Well, if he delivers packages on contract, Yeah. As you know, that that that's what I'm seeing on social media. You can make the case if he's had a cell phone. Has he been delivering to that neighborhood? Right. Right. Because what is it that got even though she gave them permission to search the house, they had a you know, they had a warrant to do it. But she gave them permission because she said we have nothing to hide here. Right. We'll have that audio coming up here in a little bit. But yeah. And and so that's the first thing I thought, OK, drives a white van, UPS. has he been delivering to that particular neighborhood? Right. Or has this person been on the radar for a couple of days? Or was it, because I don't know what they can do with AI. You know, you saw on social media, and I thought it was irresponsible for some media outlets to sit there and say, oh, is it this person? Because we think the eyes look the same. And they're making, you know, what was the brother-in-law or whatever. I'm like, you know, these are just media outlets doing it. I'm like, you don't know. Right. But does the FBI know? Can they look at the eyes and the mouth and can AI go through that mask? Can they look and come up with a picture? I don't know what AI can do. Right. I don't know what their AI can do. Facial recognition. Thank you. Yeah, right. Facial recognition software is very interesting because a lot of people believe that you can put on glasses or you can put certain things on and break it. And a YouTuber actually broke it down and said, no, you would have to have a very specific set of glasses. They actually make them now and sell them because a lot of it starts with the eyes, which, again, if you're and even if you're wearing certain sunglasses, the facial recognition software can go through those sunglasses if they're not the right kind that again block that technology so there's no telling what they had and they've been looking at this for probably a couple of days the president on friday said i believe they're getting very close and i didn't know if that was more of a you know just trying to stay positive comment by the president but often the president talks i won't say out of school but it's happened before on other on other uh crimes where he said something i think he was on one of the uh like fox and friends on on something that that was developing and he goes we got a major development this morning and then all of a sudden boom you know the news broke on that development so it may have been known by you know by law enforcement officials all right here's here's who we're looking at we just we just need to find where he is and and we'll see you know where that is but that video was just odd it was just really odd yeah this is whoever that person is is is is not either somebody who was so comfortable in the surroundings because you would think that somebody would be just quicker in their movements because the adrenaline is flowing yeah yeah that's when he noticed the doorbell cam and then he just slowly walked back to find something to block it and even walking up it was to the point of well could you turn and give me a profile thank you very much yeah oh there you are thank you for turning your back now we've got that now could you turn to the other side thank you yeah and you're i'm sitting there as you know saying to myself okay as you're an investigator what are you looking at i'm just like we doesn't he know how cameras work yeah or he or she don't know well it's it really just appears to be an amateur who likely doesn't have he may have a criminal record but hasn't done something like this before or has and is just really bad at it i mean It just does not look like any kind of, you know, when you look at people who like break into homes, they do these interviews with people who are in prison. They are they have a long, long record of breaking into homes, committing certain crimes, and they'll tell you this is what you have to do. And so they go into it's almost this is all they spend all their time doing this. my dad's always said as a as a seasoned uh career military police officer my dad has always said if they spent and a lot of people said this they spent half the amount of time you know looking for a real job they'd probably make some money as good as they are at getting away with this because they have a very it's almost like a training that goes into right effective of here's what you do you've got to go in you can't hesitate you you know and i i saw one interview with a with a burglar and he was getting away with tons of crimes and never got caught in well until he did but for years he said i made a pretty good living at it because i know i knew which houses to go into i knew how to dismantle alarms i knew how to do all of these things i'm assuming looking for cash and jewelry yes because that's things uh things that you can you can take and either sell right away or or spend you know cash is believe it or not a lot of people keep cash around the house and it's very tough to walk out with the 65 inch you know tv yeah that's plus there that's worth 399 you know you can get one at walmart for nothing and so anymore the electronics isn't you know isn't the thing unless you're talking about a game console i guess um but it's it really is, you know, it's just odd looking. This video is just really odd looking, but it makes you wonder, okay, we'll, I guess, learn the story, the whole story. Hopefully they're able to find, to actually have their person and they're able to find Ms. Guthrie alive and well. And then we can learn what happened here. Eventually, I think we will learn the whole story, but this does not look like seizing criminals based on that video. We are Red Eye Radio, brought to you by Hotshot Secret. Hi, I'm Jen Loomis, a transport safety expert at J.J. Keller. Compliance Safety Accountability is the FMCSA Safety Compliance and Enforcement Program. Its goal is to hold motor carriers and drivers accountable for highway safety. CSA does this by assessing the safety performance of motor carriers and drivers. Motor carriers are assigned to score. The carrier is then grouped with other carriers who have had a similar number of safety events. Carrier scores within the group are then ranked. Low scores are better, so carriers with the highest scores are those that are most likely to be targeted for intervention by the FMCSA. Interventions range in severity and may include warning letters, roadside, off-site, or on-site inspections, civil penalties, or operation out-of-service orders. This tip was brought to you by J.J. All right, here's some of the audio of the person who's alleged person whose house was searched because her son-in-law lives there. Here's part of this interview from CNN. No, they came out telling us that they had somebody gave a tip that the lady was in my house. I don't know her name. How's that? Frankie Duffield? That we don't know. We don't know her at all. I don't know who she is. I don't know anything about her. They only said that they gave a tip that she was in my house. And I told them, you can go in and search my house. There's nobody there. I have nothing to buy. There's nobody in my house. And I don't know what's going on. I mean, do you have family members that might know? No, they're investigating my son. He's got nothing to do with that either. I don't know. What's his name? It's Carlos Parazuelo. They have nothing to do with it either. I don't know what else to say. They're just invading my property. I told them. They're going in and out of my house taking a lot of pictures and everything. I mean, like I told them, we're not hiding anything. I give them permission. You can go and search. There's nothing in my house. You won't find anything because we're going to have nothing to hide. Is this your son-in-law's vehicle? The one that was on the side of the... That's my daughter's vehicle. So what is your son name My daughter Your daughter Yeah That her husband Do you live in It her husband So it your son who they son Yeah my son And Carlos Carlos Palazuelos yeah He has nothing to do with her either Did he ever say anything about Nancy Guthrie? Nothing. Nothing. We never, like I told the FBI, the investigator, if I knew anything about her, I said I saw her on Facebook, but I didn't read what was going on with her because I don't know her and I don't have the right to, I mean, If I don't know anybody, I won't read the story. I'll just go over and keep on going on the phone. Okay, so the name she said was Carlos Pelazillos. Okay. I could hear her much clearer the second time listening to it because I listened to it just before we went into the last break. And so, again, she doesn't know anything, but they got a warrant. Yeah. Even though she allowed them in, they got a warrant. So a judge saw something. Right. Yeah, they had some kind of lead. Hi, I'm Joe Salci. I host of the Stacking Benjamins podcast. Every week we talk personal finance trends. I think it's tough finding like a stock certificate from 1987 in grandpa's drawer. Wait until you need the face ID to unlock cash app. It's so sad what money does to people. It happens. That's why you don't tell anybody what you got. That guy had the brilliant idea. You know, when you go to the sound of the gun, bam, you're gone. It's weird. I mean, I've had so many near-death experiences. It's raw. I love this country. I offered my life to serve this nation and protect its people. The question, you know, what's the meaning of life? And to me, it just boils down to one single word, which is purpose. Mic Drop. Follow and listen on your favorite platform. you're listening to red eye radio from the unit and america studios we're red eye radio and he's here carly and i'm gary mcnamara uh download our red eye radio app today and you can listen when and where you choose so uh the other thing was yeah cash patel saying yesterday that they're looking for multiple persons of interest. Yeah. And the question would be, does that mean there were multiple people involved or there are multiple possibilities as to who could have done it? They've narrowed it down to a few. It would be the question. If, again, you know, it's really hard to know because the story about local authorities were basically late in cooperating with federal authorities. That story came out over the weekend. But if the federal authorities didn't have what they needed from local authorities, that could have slowed some things down. Again, I get back to the ability to ping cell towers and that kind of activity in an area in the middle of the night, you know you can basically get it down to that area and there's going to be very little activity otherwise. And I wonder if they narrowed it down through that. But we'll, you know, I think we're going to learn soon enough. Hopefully, we learn that Ms. Guthrie, Nancy Guthrie, is found alive. and then from that we can learn how all this happened. Because the question for me has been, did they have any idea who she was? Because if it is a ransom thing, then they clearly did. They knew there was enough wealth in the family to pay whatever they were asking. So that sounds like they knew. From CNN, just to look at everything that has happened, law enforcement detained a subject for questioning who was stopped during a traffic stop, an hour's drive south of Tucson along the U.S. border with Mexico. The detention is based on investigative leads, but the person has not been charged. Carlos is his name. A law enforcement official told CNN at the time it's not clear if the person is the same individual seen in the surveillance footage released by the FBI early Tuesday. Persons of interest, FBI Director Cash Patel said the agency is looking at persons of interest in the case, plural. He did not say who might be under suspicion, but said authorities were going through the process of elimination. A search warrant is being executed at the home. The road where the stretch is ongoing has been closed. And then we played the woman who said she is the mother-in-law said it was her home that was being searched. So authorities also searching a car, but there has been no arrest made at this point. Right. So that's really where we are right now. the whole Bitcoin thing, whether it was a test to see if the I've seen a bunch of that on on social media. Again, there's so much speculation going on. I think I told you over the weekend that by the time that that I was done going through the cycle and, you know, you had people that were experts that were disagreeing 180 degrees on everything. And by the end of the weekend, I was like, OK, what I got was they covered all the possibilities that I had in my head. Yeah, right. Ford Hatchet is a reporter, journalist at ABC 15 in Phoenix, according to his ex account. And he arrived a few minutes ago on the scene of the original traffic stop there in Rio Rico. And it has the sheriff's vehicle behind this silver small hatchback vehicle with that hatchback open, assuming that's the vehicle they're searching. It looks like it. And they're going through that. There's other vehicles there that are law enforcement vehicles. And so, again, if that's the case, they're still searching that vehicle and they are searching the home, then they must have, as you mentioned earlier, the fact that they got a warrant on that home, they had some pretty solid leads. something, you know, to the effect that they believe that the people in those, somebody living in those homes or living in that home is related to this crime in some way. So we'll see what develops. But they're working throughout the night. They're clearly going to be working on this throughout the morning. and we're going to follow along here watching pretty much any developments that come out of it. News Nation posted the video to the audio you just played. Yeah, I just saw it with the – it might be a separate interview. Yeah, it could be. We'll check that out before we go to that. Yeah, yeah. Coming up here in a little bit. Right. I haven't seen any, I really haven't seen anything of a news update that really changes anything here in the last hour. Right. Maybe 45 minutes to an hour. Right, right, right. Just searching everything right now. Yeah, yeah. Like I said, I think the one really interesting thing is that whatever happened in that Bitcoin account, Is that even related? Because that's been the question the whole time. Was it a kidnapping? Was it an attempted burglary that went wrong? It's just, this is a case that almost every single day, every single speculation led to just more questions. Right, right. Well, and again, when you look at the video, the short video that they released yesterday, this person on her porch, you know, a couple of questions come to mind. Because we were told at first that the camera was disabled by the person responsible. did he believe he had disabled the camera and then walked up and saw an infrared light that indicated it had not disabled um or was he just surprised that it was there because if he was surprised that it was there then it sounds like somebody who's never been to that house that's never been on that porch because if you had and you're not related to the family, you're not a friend, even if you are, but if you come up to that door and you're delivering something or whatever it is, one of the first things you're going to do is look at the doorbell. You either ring the doorbell as you approach it. And so that would be the question. Were they aware that it was there and think it was disabled and then saw an indication that it wasn't when he walked up. But again, the way that he was carrying his weapon, again, not sure if that was a real gun or not. You have to assume it is. But the way he was carrying his weapon, the way he was moving very slowly just looked odd, very odd. And so we'll see, again, where this goes from here. Then the Bitcoin thing, you know, TMZ reporting Harvey over TMZ saying there was Bitcoin activity on the account that TMZ was actually monitoring that they say was related to this. They can't say what type of activity there was with that, but there was some kind of activity. And so that means authorities. And he said, I forget who he was on with, Aaron Burnett, I think, at CNN, and said, well, I can't talk about the type of activity, exactly what the activity was. I can't talk about that, which means, of course, they've turned it over to authorities, which authorities had. And as you mentioned, it wasn't long after that that we learned about the traffic stop and everything else going on in Rio Rico. Brian Enten from News Nation says that he talked in Rio Rico, Arizona, near Mexico, where subject was detained, just talked to his family. They said he was delivering DoorDash when he was pulled over. Okay. And again, I don't know whether that's true or not. Right. Yeah. I mean, we don't know this. Right. You know, I mean, and, you know, and I know the first question people may say was, would say, well, she seems to have the mother-in-law credibility. There are many crimes that happen where the family is completely and totally clueless as to what the other family members. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Especially if it's her daughter and son-in-law that just moved in, you know, and I'm not, again, we don't know if they're responsible or not. But in a situation like that where, well, they just moved in, they were going to stay with me and wait for their tax refund. And you don't know what's going on in their daily life. And it's not like they're going to come out and tell you, hey, mom, by the way, we got this kidnapping plot going. You know, so it's quite possible. She was completely unaware if indeed they are responsible or involved at any level. And again, we don't know if they are or not. Sort of like when I was in college and mom would say, oh, you look bright and cheery this morning. And I was hung over as hell. Yeah. Right. You're such a good son. Yeah. But but I mean, you but my point was not to indict either way. We're just telling you the information out there. I don't know what's credible and what's not credible. Right. You know, and when we've gone through everything, I've realized that any of the investigators looking at it from the outside have such a lack of information just like I do. We're coming to a conclusion is impossible. Right. And the speculation on this has been all over the place. But then again, the speculation is based. I did see a couple of FBI people say we have no idea why there's been you know why the media was able to fly drones over the way that they were so early on into the property right you know why so many things that seem to be done wrong but then the defense was yeah but at the beginning it wasn't a kidnapping it was a missing person right well and I but my thing is when you see the blood you know missing as soon as you go there and you see the blood well you have to question whether it's a missing person or because the one thing i still don't they the blood splatter was there and then it was not there was no path anywhere of that blood going anywhere right it was at the door from one unless that's changed but the initial thing was the blood the blood was yeah the pictures that we have seen it was it was in it seemed to be isolated to that one area and you you look at that and i again i repeated that this is something i talked about earlier this week a friend of mine who was a detective for a long time said it was his practice their practice in the department he served in to treat everything as a crime scene until you know it's not and i would think that if you saw blood all right take take this off nobody gets in or out unless they're part of the investigation and you treat it as such but i again it's hard to know what was going on then you know uh the story was initially she was on she was supposed to show up at church. She didn't show up at church. Actually, it turned out she was supposed to be at a friend's house to watch a church service. And it's the church service from New York City that the church that Savannah Guthrie attends every week. And that's how they would basically attend church is at a friend's home. And then you look at, you know, the story that came out over the weekend, Mark Kelly talked about. Senator Mark Kelly was called by Savannah Guthrie on her way to the airport to get out to Arizona when she learned that her mom was missing. And then, you know, so there were a lot of people, there was a lot of moving parts to this entire equation, as there always is. But the question is, how much cooperation early on was there? And what is the protocol? Do you believe, okay, it's a missing person? If they're elderly, we're thinking they may show up. We don't have any reason to believe they've been harmed. But again, the blood droplets tell you, you've got to treat this as a crime scene. It's too many questions here. We are Red Eye Radio. We'll be right back with more Red Eye Radio with Eric Harley and Gary McNamara. We are Red Eye Radio. He is Eric Carley, and I'm Gary McNamara. Throughout the morning, we'll keep you updated if there's anything new breaking on this. But again, just in case you just tuned in right now, someone has been detained south of Tucson near the Mexican border. And we'll keep you updated. Searching a house there. We played a woman who claims to be the mother-in-law of the person of interest who says that her daughter and son-in-law just recently moved back in, and they were waiting for their income tax refunds to get a place, move out and get a place of their own again. And she said she knows nothing about anything and told the FBI, you can search my house. They had a search warrant, but she said, if you want to search my house, go ahead. There's nothing here. So we'll see. And the FBI, the sources say this is based on investigative leads. Right. So we'll keep you updated. Top of the hour news is brought to you by Howe Products. Good morning. Thanks for being here. Thank you. Are you ready for this? I don't know. Now this is news. First we've got this one and then we have the kind of football news we should be talking about coming up in just a couple of seconds. But first this one. All right. See what Lee Zeldin put out yesterday? This isn't about the whole carbon dioxide thing. And Trump administration, that's a great thing to do because Congress never approved it. Right. And so on carbon dioxide, they should relax those rules and regulations. It's this one. Lee Zeldin put this out. Countless Americans passionately despise the start-stop feature in cars. So many have spoken out against this absurd start, stop, start, stop, start, stop concept. The Trump administration has heard your calls and the announcement you have been waiting for is coming this week. Stay tuned. Now that's news. Man, you know what? That pretty much makes that $38 trillion thing completely unimportant. What was the vehicle? Oh, yeah. I got a Ford Escape. Which, ironically, is probably not the vehicle you could actually make an escape in. I mean, no disrespect, but the name doesn't really fit. I guess if you're talking about escape for the weekend, but I'm always thinking about escaping from the police. You know, I think it was made, the escape and the Mazda tribute came out at the same time. When Mazda was building the tribute with Ford. Highly popular. I mean, they were both very popular. And I remember driving both. I like the Tribute Drove, and I've got my 2003. That's your old one. That's the one that's still ticking. That's my old vehicle that's still ticking. Yeah. It's taken a licking, and I'm not sure if it's actually taken a licking, but it keeps on ticking. The car is still running very well. Almost 260,000 miles on it. Yeah. uh and uh but i got a ford escape when i rented a car last time i was in buffalo every every time i go to rent a car it's an adventure yeah because i get everything from and by the way the whole thing you get emails for all that stuff is completely useless yeah we we've never talked about that rental car companies you get a double upgrade it's like i never get the car i ordered anyway well no somebody posted the other day i booked a luxury car this may have been on youtube or somewhere uh social media somewhere the guy here's what i got when i booked a luxury car and it was uh it was just a four-door sedan it was not a luxury vehicle at all because this is what i got when i booked a luxury vehicle like when when i did bring the the vehicle back though last time uh a guy came in behind me and he told the guy he said he goes what he said i had to bring the car back he gave me an electric vehicle i didn't order one i don't know where to charge it not getting you right right right the guy this is the guy there at three in the morning going i have no idea what the rental car companies actually i think it was hertz uh don't quote me on this but i think it was hertz they were looking to turn that fleet over because you have to assume it you can't assume that someone knows what they're doing in an ev even today because if they're not using an ev every day in their life and have never used one they shouldn't be renting one yeah now they could if they wanted to yeah hey let me try out this ev you know i'm going to be in this place for a week and i'd like to learn about it and see if i like it that's one possibility but don't give it to a person in that case with those uh vehicles especially you need to kind of qualify the renter and say it's an ev are you sure you want are you willing like it's an extra box are you willing to accept an ev if that's the only car that's available right yes or no and then if the answer is no then you move on it's a very simple fix you know what budget avas have now the mystery vehicle oh yeah i'm not kidding it's like mister do you Understand the business you're in. Nobody wishes to guess what kind of car they're getting. Well, no. Here's the way I took it. If you're going to give me a mystery vehicle, I want it to be the Scooby-Doo van. That's a mystery vehicle. That's what I want. Otherwise. And we all know what that means. Yeah. We're trying to get somebody to rent the electric car. Oh. Like, gee, Scoop, they gave me a Prius. Now, they've been, I've been running for them for years. They've been great, you know, to me. It's just, I see these things and I'm just like, whoa. They did give me a Prius one time in Iowa. They gave me a Prius. And it wasn't horrible as long as you didn't need to go fast. I got a hybrid. I got a hybrid two times ago. And that was fine. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The Prius wasn't, you know, again, as long as you don't need to go. The only thing is you can check to see if you're running off of whatever. It was really, this is going back, must have been December. And it was like, I don't know, 10 degrees out. And I'd go battery only. Sorry, can't do that. Like three times I tried to go battery only. Like, no, no, no, sorry, can't do that. We need to run the engine. But when I got the Ford Escape, well, first off, with my dealership, I asked about, you know, in the new vehicles, I said, you guys had the automatic switch off because I won't even think. I'm thinking in the next two days. When the 2003 goes, I'm buying a new one. And I have the other vehicle, too, which is like 2017, I think. And it doesn't have that off. And I don't like it. but they said, no, no, it's seamless. Well, I was in the Ford Escape, and when this thing turns off and then starts up, it's like, damn. It's a jerk. It's like, and I'm like, this is so. A jerking motion. It's not being a bad person. It's a jerk. Yeah. But a jerking motion. Some vehicles are better than others, but this Ford Escape that I rented. No, my truck every once in a while will jump if I don't, because I get in, the first thing I do when I start it is turn it off. it's a habit I've gotten into the habit but if I forget that for any reason there are times when and it depends on you know where it's idling at that moment um and it will you'll you'll be there at the stoplight or stop sign you know assuming I make a complete stop and then when you let it off it just boom it just lunges forward and starts at the same time the problem i have with it is the wear and tear on the starter oh yeah i don't this isn't enough to save me anything based on my driving it's not going to save me anything in gasoline it's just not if if i were in heavy traffic all the time stop and go traffic first of all I'd move. Second of all, you know, it might be different, but I, I just don't have any need for it. It's not saving me at all. And I don't like that wear and tear on the, on the, on the starter. Now, the next thing is, you know, the facial recognition technology or the, the thing that's going to examine your face and your eyes. And if you're tired or whatever, we'll shut down the vehicle now they said it would be after 2026 they don't have a system yet no so it's not going to at least be until 2029 but republicans many republicans voted to allow that to continue i suspect that will probably go away yeah i i don't think that's going to happen because the moment that the public gets word of it and it's coming you know it's almost like remember the uh the ID thing, the stamp on your driver license, the new ID, they had to push that back how many times? Because people didn't have five years. More. Even more. Yeah. What do you call that? Because I've had an enhanced license. Right. I had it, you know, because I just got it renewed last year, So it's almost, but I had an enhanced license before that. So that would have been eight years at least. They pushed that in Texas. So many times they had to. But when I was, I was at the service center with my old Mazda. And I said, well, I said, they said, Gary, when are you getting rid of that? I go, well, what do you got to go? Let me ask you this question first. Do you have that automatic off switch in there to turn it off? And they said, no. Yeah. that in some of their vehicles, you can't change that to keep the engine running all the time. I said, I won't buy it. They go, no, no, no, but it's seamless. I go, I don't care. Real ID is what I was thinking of. The real ID thing, they had to push back, I don't know how many times. I've had an enhanced license for over eight years. So it's at least eight years because that's why Texas had an enhanced license. Yeah. And they kept pushing it back and back. The deadline is, you know, it's but but on something like this, especially your vehicle becomes, you know, an extension of yourself. Right. It's well, wait a minute. Now the vehicle is going to be monitoring me. You're never you're never going to even if that went into effect, it'd be reversed pretty quickly. Well, as I told the person at the dealership, I said, you know, it sort of defeats your whole, your former advertising of Zoom Zoom. It's like Zoom Zoom as soon as the engine starts up again at the stoplight. Yeah. Well, I bought a truck with a 5.3 liter for a reason. I got places to be. Like I said, they're actually making cars that don't have the off switch. It just, you have no control of it. There are programs that you can get that will permanently turn it off where it just doesn't come back on again. Is my warranty shot to hell then? Yeah. Okay. Yep. Now, the question will be, are the OEMs willing to? because there are certain programs or add-ons that your car may have, depending on the vehicle, that it may have that you have to go to the dealership and pay to get, like, the upgrade, you know, say $250 to get the upgrade for, you know, whatever it is. And you just didn't buy that option when it came new or when you bought it or whatever happened. but they have the ability to upgrade that at the dealership. And you may be looking at something like that where the dealerships have to make it available as a choice to upgrade it and it would be similar to a recall if they're going to take action on it, similar to a recall, or they just start with a certain year model and say going forward from this year model on, it won't be required. The other thing I wonder about engineering-wise is the whole concept of, okay, once you get going, you're not running four cylinders but two cylinders. Oh, no. And to me, all I keep thinking of is, well, we designed it. You designed it for the difference in the stresses of the different torque going back and forth like that. I don't want to buy the first five years of that vehicle. Well, the pickup trucks between 2018, 2019, somewhere in there, and 2022, 23. Oh, my gosh. There were domestic automakers that had issues. And again, because if you're throttling it down, if you're throttling the engine down and not letting it do what it was built to do, how can you not have issues? Another issue I have is, you know, some guys, if you're a gearhead, if you're a shade tree person and you've got the ability and tools to work on your own vehicle, it's one thing. But turbos, I don't want anything with a turbo because what they're doing is they're getting down to, you know, the smaller engine, but it's got turbo. It's got the same power. I don't want a turbo on my engine. I prefer not to have one because, you know, my father, his, you know, cognitive abilities or yeah you know there and but still that's one thing still don't get don't do that yeah don't get it there's more problems well you're just creating more problems well because you're it's it is and a friend of mine has been a mechanic for 40 years i mean he's just he's really great at what he does um he also has been a consultant for engine builders and And his take on it, his preference is don't get the turbos. If you're talking about, like, getting a race car and then putting a turbo on that race car that you're only going to use to race, right? It's going to be a car you're going to, you know, you want to take it out to the track or whatever. You want to race your car for, and it's not your daily driver. That's one thing. But the turbo is going to be extra wear and tear on that engine. And that's what I look at. I want to keep that vehicle as long as I can. Well, you can see I do. Yeah. Yeah. The vehicle's going to be 23 years old next month. Right. And the beauty thing is if I had bought that and had that and lived in Buffalo, it would have been shot 10 years ago. Your car's old enough to drink. The whole frame would have been rusted. Yeah. And there's nothing. Oh, yeah. This vehicle still sits up high. It rides great. Yeah. But I will tell you that every time I take it to work maybe once a week just to drive it around. I only put like 4,000 or 5,000 miles on because I just want it. This is the car I can throw anything in and I don't care. All right, go get all this stuff. You're going to the dump. Throw it in that vehicle, whatever I need to do. So I don't put a lot of miles on it. But when I drive it to work, I'll be coming down the tollway at 72. Excuse me, 70. uh and uh as far as the police know and exactly and i keep thinking to myself am i gonna make it tonight there am i gonna but i've been thinking that for the last 15 years yeah yeah i gotta make it i had a buddy who runs fine i had a buddy who would drive across the country he's a freelance photographer and for a job he would always drive like 500 000 miles on this Subaru that he had an Outback and he just loved the car and he would just get in it and drive and said he had few problems. We are Rudeye Radio. This morning's USDA Farm Report is brought to you by Howl's Products. Tested, trusted, guaranteed since 1920. For areas of the northern quadrant of the country experiencing freezing cold over the last three weeks, finally a break. USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey. We will see some days with the temperature reaching the 40s, even the 50s in a few spots, and that will start to chip away at this snow and ice that still remains all over the place on the landscape, along the roads, on the sidewalks, and it's going to be a relief when that finally begins to melt off. Yeah, Rippey adds the density of the snow and ice will be in a slow melt. But over time, and I think certainly in the next five to seven days, we will put to rest a lot of these wintry memories that have been plaguing lower Great Lakes region, the eastern Corn Belt, Mid-Atlantic, and the northeast. He adds the snow and ice cover has protected winter grain and cover crops from freezing temperatures from late January to now. A little compressed or flat initially, but everything should be good. The moisture is going to soak in and it should be a benefit. I'm Rod Bain reporting for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. This report brought to you by Cenex Fuels and Lubes. Coming up, following the bottom of the hour, forget about Bad Bunny, let's talk Bad Newsome. And you heard that Sam Donald, for example, from Seattle, lost money on the Super Bowl because of the tax system in California. And Boomer Siason came out the other day and said the National Football League Players Association should say no more Super Bowls in California. We're not going to send our players there to lose money because of your tax system. And I went, whoa, because that'll be a go. I mean, it won't be till, I think, 2030, but that's a negotiation point. Plus, some bad economic news, but some real good things that the Trump administration is doing. Zanima on the way. catch red eye radio live every night on the red eye radio app available in the app store red eye radio and he is here carley and i'm gary mcnamara download our red eye radio app today you can listen when you want all right so here it is i and when i first saw the story this week i I said, really? It showed that the quarterback of Seattle was going to lose $247,000. Wow. For playing in the Super Bowl because of how they tax the athlete, the jock tax that they have in California. And Boomer Sienzen said, if I'm the National Football League Players Association, I'm like, hey, we're not playing any more Super Bowls in California. We're just not going to do it. After learning the Seattle Seahawks quarterback, Sam Darnold lost money by playing the Super Bowl in California. Boomer Esiason believes NFL players should refuse to play games there in future seasons. Sam Darnold is a Super Bowl winning quarterback, but not without a cost due to the jock tax and state income tax rate in California paired with the somewhat nominal payouts made to Super Bowl players, Donald Darnold and other high paid athletes will end up receiving a higher tax bill than their game check because they base it on what you make the entire year. Yeah. Yeah. Not just what you're making when you're there. It's based on it's based on your all of your earnings. Yeah. The jock tax taxes non-resident athletes and entertainers based on duty days spent working in the state, which for the Super Bowl is a longer period of time than it would be for a regular season game, because you've got to get there early, the press conferences, so there's a bunch of duty days there. Additionally, the tax rate is based on a player's salary, not the amount they will be making from the Super Bowl. Isn't that unconstitutional? How can you tax what they haven't earned there? hmm i know some states with an income tax do that if it's passed through income if they're not residents non-resident they set it up so that it's based on your federal tax return they go by what you earn on your federal tax return and that determines the final rate of what you're going to pay yeah for darnold winning the super bowl earned him 178 000 but according to boomer esiason and and by the way also yahoo uh yahoo money yahoo finance did this was the first one i saw it on his tax bill for spending nearly a week working in the state amounts to $249,000 because it factors his regular salary. So for winning the Super Bowl in the state of California, if I said $249,000, that's what the tax would be. That's not what he loses. He lost $71,000 to win the Super Bowl. Wow. now if i'm the national football league players association now you got to remember it's probably even more than that because since he's in seattle he's playing against the san francisco 49ers so that's another day that he's there because he during the regular season and then he's playing against the LA Rams. That's another day that he is there. He's probably had like nine or ten duty days or maybe, oh, this is a bunch of duty, or maybe even more than that in the state of California. So if I'm the National Football League Players Association, I'm like, hey, we're not playing any more Super Bowls in California. We're just not doing it. I'm saying we're never going to go back to California. This is ridiculous. We're the players union. They cannot be in a situation where they go to work and lose money. He goes, except they'll be going back to California next season because the Superbowl is being played in LA. Now it's hard to expect the common fan to feel bad about any athlete making hundreds of thousands or hundreds of millions of dollars having to pay a jock tax and so obviously uh darnold will find other ways of profiting off a super bowl win endorsements uh he goes he's so he's probably not sweating it he goes but it's a little jarring to learn that players will be left with a healthy tax bill for the week spent at the super bowl But that's not even it. I remember, oh, I forgot who it was. I can't think it was. It was a player that played for the Bills. And, you know, and he ended up going to Miami. And one of the reasons he said, he came back to the Bills. So I just can't remember his name at the moment. I got mine blank. But he said, he goes, go to Miami. They can pay me less and I'll make more than in New York. I don't have to pay a millionaire's tax. I don't have to pay. I don't have to. They have, you know, basically they have zero income tax. yeah um it this all goes back remember phil mickelson when he was uh when he talked about the fact that he might be moving because of his tax bill and oh man he was eviscerated but he actually made a great point because you and i actually did the math on it as to what he was making estimating what he was making but we looked at it and said well over a 10-year period he could lose 120 million dollars yeah that actually adds up doesn't matter well nobody wishes to lose if you're a billionaire the reason that you're a billionaire or if you're a hundreds of millionaire the reason you got there is you don't give the government 120 million when you don't have to right now we're going to see this we're going to continue to see this is part really if you think about it uh this will get more and more attention but it's part of this migration of billionaires out of West Coast states, California, Washington, because we have to include Jeff Bezos, who's building his lair in Florida, and now Mark Zuckerberg, who's building a home in Florida. I don't think he's building a lair, but he might be. But if you think about this move, Elon Musk moving to Texas was a big deal. But you can. Yesterday, Zuckerberg. Yeah. Yeah. Building a $150 million home. Yeah, just mention that. And then the idea of what they also have available to them in terms of like land in states like Texas for SpaceX, right? Or the Bezos Space Company, where he's going to put sharks, lasers on sharks. and send them into space from his lair. But they have these opportunities to build their business and maybe even new business in these states because the question isn't just, well, they decide to live somewhere else because they can pay a lower personal income tax. They know their corporation is paying way too much in these high-tax states. and their best bet in order to remain competitive is to eventually move their headquarters. And remember when Bezos was trying to put a second headquarters for Amazon in New York and AOC shut him down? He was like, great, you just did me a favor. I won't do it. and you know what they were looking at there was a logistics operation and it made sense at that time even though it was more expensive in new york uh to do that the logistics of it would pay off in the long run well now you have to look at it completely different and by the way that also was back when the ports thing had not changed. Now the ports game has changed completely with everything that was going on in the backups at the L.A. ports, and then they moved things to the Gulf ports and the East Coast ports, Savannah and New York. You know, you've got now more options in terms of, you know, if you're a company, a global e-commerce company like Amazon. Well, the good thing for you is this could be the thing that saves the Dallas Cowboys. Because the players will say, wait a minute, you know, California, New York, I can sign a contract and make two, three million more a year. And actually sign for less money at the Dallas Cowboys. So bye bye San Francisco. and this could be your hope and the regeneration of the Dallas Cowboys to win a Super Bowl because the best players will want to come to Dallas because the taxes are less, even if the football minds aren't good. Well, there's one little small part you're missing. Jerry Jones or someone in his family will still be running the operation. That's what I said, the football minds. it's not now the other good thing not very promising at all this could Miami might have some promise and I have a friend who's the assistant GM or Miami so or Tampa or Jacksonville there you go yeah but the other good thing is maybe this will change what the players want in the end zone the messaging in the end zone oh I was going to say if it's the Cowboys you mean the ball love not hate except for taxes yes they can put that in the end zone right read my lips hey the nfl players association you know they've got a say into it the players have a say as to what they want yeah well one thing that i won't ever have to worry about is a jock tax unless they decide to uh tax a certain apparel then but otherwise i won't it's i i i think to myself at times they're really trying to crush industry they're really trying to crush everything that is ultimately great about this economy. Yeah. Over and over again, these blue states just punish, punish, punish. And are any of the citizens of those states better off? Well, the article took the wrong bent on it saying, well, nobody's going to feel sorry. It's got nothing to do with whether you feel sorry. No. It is the fact that they're looking to get money any way they can from people that have the ability. This is just an example there of the NFL, but what they're doing to corporations and the billionaire's tax of people that can move easily. And the left has created a system where the rich pay so much of the taxes. And they don't seem to care. Right. it's like no we don't well if they're gonna leave we're gonna get them on the way out we're we're we're gonna get them somehow and you have a few you know even though hokul's backing off on it it seems like you know hokul saying well we can't do this we can't lose the billionaires like andrew cuomo said they pay 50 of our taxes if we lose 10 of the billionaires we can't make up that budget unless we tax the middle class. Right. But they've created such a system that is so, such a tax system in these liberal states that's so easy to collapse by just a few people moving. Yeah. And these people can afford to move. Yeah. You know, that's the thing is that, you know, and they act as if nothing is happening. Nothing's going on. Except in California where they're talking about, you know, well, we're going to tax you after you leave. Tax the forever tax. You can go anywhere and we're going to tax you because you once lived here. Yeah, shut up. That will never, ever pass the courts. Sorry, that ain't going to work. That ain't going to work. It's the problem California's had. That's working against them now. They believe they've always believed what starts in California then spreads his policy throughout the U.S. Emissions, everything else, you know, and on taxation. The same thing. Look, we can all get it done. You know, we'll just set the tone. And that's why I think Newsom thinks he's still good for 2028. Like, nope, nope. We'll see what happens, though. Kamala's still in the lead. We are Red Eye Radio. Coming up, more with Gary McNamara and Eric Harley. It's Red Eye Radio. We are Red Eye Radio. He is Eric Harley and I'm Gary McNamara. No updates. on the person detained or the home searched. Authorities questioning the person. 60 miles south of Tucson is an alleged mother-in-law. Right. Again, we don't know this for sure. He said, you know, told authorities they could search the house. They had a search warrant anyway. Right. And really little information since that came out hours ago that they were questioning him. uh rio rico is the town it is less than 15 miles to the port of nogalos which is a a pretty large u.s mexico border gateway um it was reported uh several hours ago that this person may have been trying to reach the border um haven't heard more on that i did see one uh homicide detective say uh they might have known who he was already and then put out the video to see how he would react.
