Summary

This episode of The Leviathan Chronicles follows an Evaterra environmental conservation team executing Operation Riverwolf to destroy an illegal hydroelectric dam and mining operation hidden in the Amazon rainforest. The team must coordinate simultaneous explosions at a projection facility, dam, and boat house while navigating corporate corruption, indigenous tribal politics, and unexpected combat situations.

Insights
  • Environmental activism narratives increasingly frame ecological protection as requiring covert military-style operations against corporate actors, reflecting tensions between legal enforcement and direct action
  • Indigenous communities are positioned as both stakeholders and tactical assets in environmental operations, raising questions about consent and representation in conservation efforts
  • The episode explores moral calculus in environmental work—weighing ecosystem damage against human casualties among workers in illegal operations
  • Corporate environmental crimes are depicted as requiring international intelligence coordination (G20 agencies) to generate satellite evidence for enforcement
  • Technology (AI systems like 'Mira') is central to identifying hidden industrial operations and planning covert environmental interventions

The Inveneos Expeditions A Leviathan Chronicles story The Inveneos Expeditions Prologue 2, Operation River Wolf Valedo Havari, the Amazon Rainforest, 500 miles west of Manaus. Up here! I'm showing the lookout point is five kilometers west. I'm showing the same. We gotta make it to that steep ridgeline, but from there it should be an easier approach into the valley gorge. Rick, the Kamari said it'd be another two hours once we pass the ridge, right? Well, they said it would take us about two hours. They could probably clock it in 15 minutes. I think they know the lay of the land better than we do. How long has their tribe lived in the Havari Valley? When I was embedded amongst the Kamari, they told me they had an oral history going back over 400 years. Using phytolith and archaeological evidence, we've dated indigenous habitation in the Amazon back almost 10,000 years. If we take down that illegal hydroelectric station, then they can live here for another 10,000 years. Preferably undisturbed. It took me six months of living with them in the rainforest before they trusted that we weren't one of the illegal logging companies killing the river. When did the Kamari say the river stopped flowing? Two years ago. It's when Mira's satellite network started picking up unsanxed activity from Cerrado Petrochemicals operations in the protected areas of the western Amazon. The problem is, it's not just the dam. The power generated will fuel Cerrado's logging and mining operations deeper in the valley. And logging means roads. Roads that will bring trucks, carrying excavators and mining gear for bauxite, iron ore, copper, zinc. The deforestation could wipe out 25% of the carbon storage in this region of the rainforest, not to mention the water contamination and biome damage. They said the fish they've been catching from the river has been making the children sick in their village. Fucking eco-murdering great junkies. Hey, you did great work, Ricardo. I mean it. Cerrado is never gonna know what hit him. Sam, you're on ops. Did we get the explosives we needed from your contact in Venezuela? They arrived last night in the Nauce, and I double-checked them at sunrise before takeoff. We're loaded for bear-dom. And Rick, you've spent enough time with the Kamari that you think they'll provide us cover when we escape? Once I explained to the tribal leaders that Evaterra is an environmental conservation group and that we're trying to preserve the river land in the Amazon, the Kamari agreed to let us cross their land for our attack. Of course I had to eat a fire-roasted venomous spider that made me hallucinate for 72 hours. Oh, come on, Rick. You know, I wouldn't ask my team to do anything I wouldn't do myself. Then how come I wasn't invited to that swanky retreat with you and Samantha in the Maltese? You mean the Evaterra Geopolitical Conference? Our annual Directive Meeting? Trust me, Ricardo. You didn't miss anything. And just so you know, there's something particularly grim about planning operations to save the planet on an island in the Indian Ocean that might not exist in 20 years. All I know is that I was trying to get rid of these pesky tan lines. So much for being the three musketeers. What do you mean the three musketeers? This is the ninth operation with the three of us. You, the soldier. Thank you. I'm not a strategist. Actually, environmental scientist, but thank you. And the thirties. Is you, Ricardo the Charmer. I was going to say polyglot anthropologist, but I'll take the compliment, Sam. You're welcome. Tell you what, Ricardo, if we kill this dam and free the river for the Kaimari, we'll all get three muskets tattooed on our asses. My treat. What do you think? I think you just feel guilty about my tan lines. It's okay, Dominique. I'll just dream of the next island boondockle. I'm telling you, man, it wasn't that kind of trip. The big man just wanted to speak to a few members of the advanced science team as well as operations. So why did Sam get the nod? I could be the ambassador from operations. I can be quite the statesman. It's because I make a better pisco sour. Is that the one with the egg? No, that's the one you kept buying that brunette in Cuiaba. Ricardo, fraternizing on an assignment? Hey, I'm in the relationship business. We all have a role. Ricardo gets it done, Dominique. It was a hot night and I was offering the lady a cool drink. Yeah, I bet it was a hot night. Look, while the two of you were building bombs, reading heatmaps and getting back-robs on tropical islands, I was out in the field cementing local relationships for this operation. You know, for the planet. Aw, that's right. Poor Ricardo. He sent you to live with the tribe of warrior women for six months. Obviously, as an anthropologist, I jumped at the chance to gain first-hand experience with such a remote indigenous community. A warrior tribe of women who specialize in blowgun hunting, if I'm not mistaken. Please correct me, Ricardo, if I have any of these details wrong. No, no. Please. Go on. It's a matriarchal society. The women do all the hunting and bring home the bacon. You laugh, but that's the problem. Since Cerrado built the illegal dam, the Caimari have seen their food supply halved, so there hasn't been much bacon. And it's not just them. Eight other indigenous tribes are seeing their land get contaminated by Cerrado and the other industrial giants encroaching the preserve. This corporate invasion is ruining cultures. How'd Cerrado even get in here? I thought this part of the Amazon was supposed to be protected and reserved for the people of the Catacavali. Not for the right payoff or kickback. An enforcement is underfunded. It's what makes this area near the Peruvian border so lucrative. The land has never been raped. It belongs to the Caimari. These fuckers just want to steal it. We're not going to let that happen. Avatar exists to stop those fuckers and protect this planet. But we got to do so much more. We are going to do more today. Two hours later. Christ, Ricardo. How much further? Enough to make your legs sore. Trust me, they are sore. Then we're getting close. You said that two hours ago. Then we must really be getting close. This area is one of the last underexplored regions of the Amazon. How can we trust the intel? Because for the last eight years I've designed Mira to map every square inch of this planet. Above and below the waterline. And she calculated that this route would give us the optimal sight line on the Cerrado Dam facility. And we all trust in Mira, right? We all trust in Mira. But I agree with you, Sam. This hike is a bitch. I'm glad to hear you say that. I thought you were going to say something inspiring like the journey being more important than the destination. No, Ricardo. That's just a tattoo you write on that Gachimia's arm. Who wouldn't talk to you on the plane from Lima? Oh, come on. Hey, hey, hey, quiet. Shut up, dude. We must be getting close. Mira was right. Like I'm already said, we should be able to see the entire operation from an outcropping at the top. They must be turning on the dam. Come on, let's see what Cerrado is trying to hide. Let's go. Hey, I think I see the clearing up ahead. This must be it. Ricardo, stay down. We don't have intel on the surveillance perimeter of the power station. Sam's right. We can't get spotted. Stay low, and let's get close on that boulder near the edge. Ready? Let's go. Go, go! Holy shit, we're pretty high up. Like I'm already women were right. From up here, you can see the entire catacavali. Look, down below us, Cerrado's dirty little secret. An illegal hydroelectric dam hidden from the rest of the world. Hidden? How the hell do you hide a hydroelectric plant? I'll show you. There it is. Christ. That's how they did it. Pretty astonishing. Rick, come here. We need to see this. What am I looking at? All I can see are trees and... Wait. Wait a second. It all just shifted. All the trees... It's a screen. It's a giant translucent tarp covering the span of the gorge. Do you see the wires on the sides now? Holy shit. It must be three football fields long. It looks like it covers the whole southern half of the gorge. Now look at four o'clock high. See that tiny green building? Yep. I see it. That's the projector assembly. It's throwing a high-res image of the jungle floor and the screen stretched over the top of the valley. I'm not going to find none of the satellites. I've been able to pick it up. It's how Serato's been able to keep a renegade operation this size under wraps. How the hell did Mita discover something this well hidden? She was able to scan a spectrographic map of the rainforest and detect a light that was being reflected differently off the rocks closest to the hydroelectric dam. God bless her. In Mira, we trust. You're a tough bitch, Mita, but we love you. So the mission directive is just the power station? I had to break it to you, but I think Serato has built a lot more than a power station. Take a look. Six o'clock low, under the screen. Oh, shit. What are you seeing, Sam? I see the dam. Fuck. It's bigger than we thought. And down at the base, I'm seeing a lot of heavy excavation equipment and smelting urns. They're further along than we thought. This dam is the lifeblood of Serato's operation. It's the artery feeding the heart of their grade. Oh no. What? Fuck's sake. It all looks like they have a full-on logging and mining operation hidden here. Must be 70, 80, 100 workers down below the dam. Damn it. That's a lot of people, Dominique. Ask yourself why the dam is bigger. Because they need to power excavators to build roads, to bring trucks to carry out the trees. They're gonna clear for the mines, where they're gonna rip open the earth and pour chemicals back into the river to find the gold and all the precious metals. Well then sell on the open market back in Sao Paulo and take the cash to Switzerland to deposit where they won't even have to pay taxes on it while they sit on yachts that dump their shit into the ocean. I'll go one further. Within nine months, they could clear over 50,000 hectares of rainforest, releasing over 80 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Just the loss of biodiversity caused by this one logging camp alone will have long-lasting effects on the ecosystem, making it even more vulnerable to climate change. And all those toxic chemicals will run down the river and contaminate not just the chimari, but every other tribe and community that lives in the Cataca Valley. In two more years, they'll all be so dead and diminished from mercury poisoning that there won't be anyone left to put up a fight. We're going to put up a fight. Damn right we are. Okay, so this is Operation River Wolf. Evertara has convinced most of the G20 intelligence agencies to redirect their satellites overhead for the next four hours, so we've gotta move fast. So step one, we have to take down that projection screen covering the gorge before the satellites get overhead. My job. Exactly. You're gonna take out the projector building. The projection emitter is the most heavily manned building in the camp. By taking it out, you'll reduce their entire team by 50%. Until on numbers? Mira estimates six to eight men inside, but only two armed guards on the perimeter. Once you neutralize any threat, you'll blow the emitter and take down the cover screen. Here, I'm giving you 10 HMX grenades set on timers. I programmed them each for exactly 45 minutes. The brief set, the building only needed six. I believe in giving you extra. And that's why Sam's the best at what she does. Now ideally we want to time it so that both the River Dam and the projector detonate at the same time. Create the most amount of chaos with us having the least exposure. Neutralize the guards, set the explosives, get your ass back down to the riverbank for extraction. Count on it. Okay, I'm up next. Right. Show me the blueprints again. Okay, your job is to blow the dam. You and I will descend down to the top lip of the embankment. Here. Once we get there, you'll need to affix a belay line here and descend halfway down the dam wall. Mira's analyzed the geometry of the concrete and we need three explosives set precisely there. There. And here. What about hostiles? Shouldn't be many if Ricardo does his job. Don't worry, I'm good at my job. You better be. Be pretty exposed while I'm on belay, especially with that logging camp at the base. I know, but at that point, any remaining guards will be so confused and panicked that they'll be running to avoid the floodwaters. And remind me how we get out. Where I come in. About 500 meters upriver on the far bank. There's a boat house where Cerrado keeps all their zodiacs. It's also where we'll find most of the other half of the security force. I'll make sure none come back your way, Sam. The boat house sounds risky for you. How will you take on this? With surprise and overwhelming firepower. I'll take five of our grenades plus a smoke trap. I'll hide in position and move in when the explosives go off. I'll signal you when it's safe. And then you will send the belay line to join me, Sam. I'll get two of us, then grab Ricardo on the riverbank and book upstream before anyone can say carbon footprint. Now, there's one thing that... No, Dominique, you should let me be the one... No, Sam. I know what you're going to say and I need you on the wall. You're the only one with belay experience. Brick and I will handle the guards. Once the water starts rushing, the loggers will be so scattered they won't know what to do. There's a lot of people down there. Sam, when the G20 gets this satellite footage, they'll have enough proof to shut down all of Cerrado's operations in the Amazon. We could save a lot more than just one region of the rainforest. It's only proof if we pull this off. Okay, let's all synchronize watches. Now. Four hours. Four hours. Ricardo, you've got the furthest to hike, so I'll let you get a head start. I'm going to help Sam get the ropes and anchor points sorted. Gotcha. I'll see you on the riverside, sister. Good luck, Amiga. Hey, you forgot something. My blowgun! Looks like the chimerae taught you more than just their language. Yeah, they gave me some lessons. Hey, the two of you, stay sharp. rendezvous on the katalka. Go. Ricardo really did do great work with the chimerae. Hey, I'm worried about you. You don't have solid intel on the security complement. You don't know what you're heading into when you hit that boat house. Again? With enough firepower to flatten a small house. Yeah, but that doesn't mean anything. Some of security could be outside the blast radius. It's the worst part of the plan. You should have put me on the third slot. I'm the fighter, Dom. You're the thinker. I'll call you up when it's clear, Sam. Besides, we want to try to time all the explosions simultaneously so we don't get spotted. Then let me handle the guards and the boat. You can handle the dam. I know you could. What if I broke down and admitted to you I was really afraid of heights? In addition to not ever wanting to see you get hurt. So, so... Do you think Ricardo suspects anything? No. No, I think we've been careful. That's why I keep him distracted by constantly sending women his way. So he gets to think he's the magic mic of covert environmental activism? And I want to keep it that way. Our Ricardo is a great field agent, but we both know he's...distractable. So you've been keeping him distracted? At least until we get back from the Maldives. Smart. You're always smart, Sam. I'm the best at what I do. And remind me what exactly that is again? I'm a fixer. I fix things that are broken. There is said you were the best to ever come out of Contacamp. Dom, I'm having concerns about how many people are working at the logging camp. Mirror's report says that... Ricardo can handle the guards. I know he acts like a lover, not a fighter, but... That's not what I mean. The brief said maybe eight hostiles at the projector, another six or seven people at the dam, but nothing about that logging camp at the riverbed. I must have seen at least 50 people. Once you blow the dam, we'll be looking at class five rapids for the next 10 miles downstream. Any bodies will get washed away in a hurry. At that point, anyone left with the Serato Shart will be long to the jungle. Dominique, they're fucking human beings. Yes, and these human beings are creating an ecological disaster that will cost more to the planet than... What about the human cost? Whatever the cost. We're trying to save the ecosphere, not individual lives? This is about a greater good, Sam. We both knew that when we joined Evitera. Most of these Serato laborers are just getting dollars a day. It's not about the workers. It's about the planet. You know the calculus, Sam. This place violates every law. Every sanction. You make it seem like they had a choice. Every one of those workers made a decision when they decided to strip mine a protected area in a preserved region on the Amazon. The decision to log the Catacca Valley wasn't made by the people we're about to drown. Everyone has a choice. That's right, Dominique. Everyone has a choice. Sam. Did you think about the donor ache? I did, and, uh... and I'm open to it. Wait, really? You said you didn't want children. Now you'd be willing to carry? I might. I know it's important to you and... Dominique. Listen, uh... Maybe once we get back stateside, we can start looking at houses. Maybe a white-picked fence will get you to stop signing up for these Evertara operations. Isn't that why you're doing this? You know why I'm doing this. Come on. We're on a schedule. Four hours. Yes, ma'am. The war is over, and both sides lost. Kingdoms were reduced to cinders, and armies scattered like bones in the dust. Now the survivors claw to what's left of a broken world. Praying the darkness chooses someone else tonight, but in the shadow dark, the darkness always wins. This is old-school adventuring, and it's most cruel. Your torch ticks down in real time, and when that flame dies, something else rises to finish the job. This is a brutal, rules-light nightmare with a story that emerges organically based on the decisions that the characters make. We were both on a little show you might know called Supernatural. It had a pretty good run, 15 seasons, 327 episodes. And though we have seen, of course, every episode many times, we figured, hey, now that we're wrapped, let's watch it all again. And we can't do that alone. So we're inviting the cast and crew that made the show along for the ride. We've got writers, producers, composers, directors, and we'll, of course, have some actors on as well, including some certain guys that played some certain pretty iconic brothers. It was kind of a little bit of a left field choice in the best way possible. The note from Kripke was, he's great. We love him. But we're looking for like a really intelligent, decoveny type. With 15 seasons to explore, it's going to be the road trip of several lifetimes. So please join us and subscribe to Supernatural then and now. Okay, we have 15 minutes until the projector detonation. You get your charges placed, ascend up, and I'll have a boat waiting for us. Dominique? Yeah. If we pull this off, I want another weekend in the mall deeds with you. If we pull this off, I'm going to tell our future kid what a badass their mom is. Oh, Dama. Good luck, Sam. Be careful. See you in 15. See you in who? 15. Fuck. Okay, Mira. Tell me where to go. 40 feet left. And... another 15. Here. I'm on the lake, the first placement. What's your status, Rick? Just crossed the high point on the gorge. I'm about 30 yards off the projection building. How's security? It's not so bad. I just see two guys with pistols. You think you can get past them to place the charges? Only if I do it quietly. Let's see how well the Kaimari warriors taught you. Guard's down. Thank you, Kaimari. I'm moving closer to lay the charges. How's the boat coming along, Dominique? A little too good. I'm 20 yards off the boat house and I'm not seeing any security. It's deserted. That's not right. Where's all the manpower? I thought Intel said it was fortified. Yeah, that's what I thought too. Maybe today's just our lucky day. I'm moving in to get closer. Be careful, Dom. Approaching the boat house. How you making out, Sam? First explosive set. I'm repelling to the second charge location. Looks like it's lower. Come on, show me where Mira... Where do you want this? Great work, Sam. Tars is up here, set. Hang down to the riverbank for extraction. Hey, Spider-Girl, anyone spot you yet? Not yet. That screen is giving me good cover. Well, enjoy it while it lasts. You've got five minutes to place the last two charges before the second charge. I'm going to leave you exposed, Sam, if you're still in Bel-A. You need to be topside before the explosives go off. Way ahead of you. Second charge is placed. What's our status on the zodiac? I'm approaching the rear of the boat house. Still no sign of security. Weird. Seems deserted. I'm just checking the back door to... Shit, god damn it! What's going on, Dom? Fuck, we've got two guard dogs in the boat house. I can't get out of here. I'm going to get out of here. We need to get out of the boat house. I can't get past them. I'm behind the security. We need to get both the dogs down. Use the rifle. Too loud! If I take the shot, every guard will hear the rifle and leave Sam exposed. No fucking way! Shit! We don't have much time, please. I'm at the riverbank. We can hear guards coming my way. Sam! Where are you, Sam? Almost a position. Moving to place the third explosive. Come on, Myra. One more time, sweetie. Hurry! Hurry! I'm crossing a truck with about 10 guards heading down the trail. Don't worry about me. Drop those dogs and get on the water. Now, Dom! Tim's right. I'll have on friendly filming in 60 seconds. You need to get Ricardo out of there. You'll be editing, Doc. We all knew the calculus, Dominique. Whatever the cost. I'm not doing that. I have no way to... Dom, use the smoke out of him. He'll take the dog out. Yes! Damn it, you're right, Rick. Good thinking. I'd have just bought yourself a ticket to the islands. Don't worry. I'm in. I'm inside the boat house. Hard to see. Wait! Wait, I see them! I see the boats! I'm boarding the first one. I'm gonna try to get the engine started. Where did you get the boat? I'm in the middle of the boat. The boat wasn't started. Damn it! We got the fire! Damn it! Shit! I'm taking fire! Come on. Fire under fire. Fuck! The fireworks show it's about to start. Yes! We got power! Hurry! Ricardo, hang on! It may seem in P-3, 2, 1. You did it, Ricardo! I see the screen coming down from here. Way to go, buddy. Coming to get you now. I'm on it too soon. Where are you, Dom? Almost there! I need that boat. Shit! They're closing in. Running out of time, buddy. Almost there. Dominique, hurry! I think I hear someone topside. I see you, Dom. I see the boat. Okay, Rick. No one can set this. I'm gonna lay down to cover fire. I need you in the water, in the middle of the river in 10 seconds. Ready? Are you crazy? You're not a fucking piranha. These guys will shoot me before I can sink under the sea. That's me! Now, Ricardo! Dominique! Ricardo, put it on my hand! I got you! I'm in! I'm in! Go, go, go! Sam, I've got Ricardo. I'm fine! What do you think this is? I've got all three explosives placed. Have you got any? I've got bad news. I've been spotted. We've tucked under some overhanging trees at the far left side of the dam wall about 100 meters up. There's at least three or four loggers on the ridge of the dam. Shit! They're firing! Sam, you've gotta get out of there! They can't get a clean shot, but I'm pinned down. Damn it! Just hang on, Sam. We're coming. No, Dom! Do not approach the dam! Those guards will pick you off before you can even get close! You can't get to me! Hell, I can't! Listen to me. You can't approach the dam. Repeat. Do not approach the dam. Turn around and head back upstream. You and Rick can make it to Peru in three days. Please, Sam, and you don't try. We're not leaving you, Sam. Just hang in there. We're almost there. It's up around the next bend. How far? Less than a kilometer. Punch it! I'm trapped off. Dockside is crawling with security. We're coming to you, Sam. You can't save me, Rick. Shit! They're starting to cut the rope. I can feel it. Can you exit to the left? Can you reach some sort of lead where you can get off the lead? No, no, I can... Fuck! It's over, Dom. I can feel them cutting the line up. I'm sorry. I'm gonna blow the charges. The line's gonna break away. I don't feel! You'll be killed! I'll be killed either way. We need this dam blown. You said it. This is where it stops, Dom. This is where we push back. Whatever the cost! Just a little longer, Sam. Help is on the way. I promise. Make sure Serato pays for this. Sam! I promise you. Help is on the way! The Kamari Warriors! Yes! Now that sisterhood! God damn it! I love those badass bitches! I told them we might need backup. Sam, we're ready to clear out of here. Can you get Copsci? No time. The rope's about to give. We gotta blow the dam now before more men get here. I'm gonna swing out and drop. Can you and Rick come catch me in the river? Sam, that's crazy! You'll be killed! Not if you get here fast enough. Sam, we're almost to you. The rope is breaking. I'm going now. Sam, no! Son! We'll catch you, Sam. Get off the wall and blow this motherfucker now! Let it flow! Where'd she go? Someone left! Left! Left! Oh, please, please! Get to her! Get close! This is 11 o'clock! Sam! Can you reach out?
