Summary

Guy Benson, Fox News political analyst and KCMO talk radio host, discusses President Trump's imminent deadline for military action against Iran's regime. Benson analyzes the strategic goals of degrading Iran's nuclear and missile capabilities, the distinction between targeting the regime versus the Iranian people, and the possibility of last-minute negotiations to avoid strikes.

Insights
  • The administration's military campaign aims to degrade Iran's nuclear weapons development and missile capabilities rather than regime change alone, with the goal of creating negotiation leverage
  • Leadership decapitation of Iranian regime officials over the past month has created uncertainty about who has authority to negotiate or implement agreements, complicating potential diplomatic solutions
  • The Iranian population is reportedly more pro-Western and anti-regime than commonly understood, as evidenced by civilian reactions to military strikes, suggesting potential for post-conflict alignment
  • Dramatic presidential rhetoric about consequences may be tactical messaging to the regime rather than literal descriptions of intended outcomes, requiring analysis of actions over words
  • The UK's current government stance on Iran operations represents a strain on the US-UK special relationship, reflecting broader geopolitical alignment differences

the president of the United States. Well, we've got 11 hours until the president of the United States son post deadline on Iran. That's eight o'clock Eastern time as we hit the eight o'clock Central hour here on KCMO in Kansas City. And one hour ago, the president posted on truth social quote, a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don't want that to happen, but it probably will He adds will find out tonight in one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the world. 47 years of extortion, corruption and death will finally end. God bless the great people of Iran end quote here to break it all down. Guy Benson, you hear him every afternoon two o'clock on KCMO talk radio political analyst as well at Fox News guy. Good morning. Thanks for joining us in Kansas City. What is your reaction to the post last hour from the president? Well, that's certainly very dramatic language, and I am very supportive of what the president has done with Iran and what he is doing. I'm not sure that is the most helpful way of describing it or setting it up, certainly in the eyes of the American people or in the eyes of the Iranian people, although most of them are struggling and haven't had internet in many weeks because the regime has shut it down. I know Starlink is cutting through some of that, but the message is and the war is against the regime, not the people, not the proud Persian civilization that's existed for centuries that has been hijacked and ruined by this awful regime. So I just think that I think the president is maybe trying to cut through some of the noise and deliver a message to the regime leaders about how damaging whatever this attack is that's coming would be. I just hope it is not ultimately an attack on the country and the people because the goal is to significantly weaken and entervate and degrade the ability of the regime to threaten the world and threaten the United States if not topple the regime and have it be replaced, toppled and replaced by the people of Iran who are overwhelmingly far more pro-West, pro-America than this death cult cabal that leads the country by force right now. So I know that people sometimes clutch pearls at the words President Trump uses. I think the actions matter a lot more and we'll see what happens when the deadline passes. I just think it's important to always bear in mind that our quarrel quite rightly is with the regime, not with the people. So do you think it's maybe caught the United States off guard in terms of how far down the totem pole so to speak this regime has gone in maintaining its power rather than opening up the opportunity for a more West like or Western minded individual or individuals to take over that country over the last 35 days? Well not necessarily because look this is a regime that's been in place for decades right and over the course of the century. They have not just used death to America as a slogan. They have lived out death to America with their actions and you don't just uproot an entire regime of in nearly 50 years overnighter in the span of a month. We've decapitated so much of their top leadership. Think of it there was a Supreme Leader who we took out and then his son the new Supreme Leader we don't know anything about his whereabouts or condition. There are rumors that he's dead or incapacitated all sorts of different things he hasn't been heard from so we might have taken him out as well and in another attack just yesterday US Israeli combined actions took out the intelligence leader of the IRGC who'd been managing to evade that fate for weeks and so we're still going but the regime does keep going you know further and further down that the question becomes as you go down the depth chart so to speak are those people any less fanatical any less anti-American I think in the regime the answer is no the question is do you get someone or someone who can actually implement some kind of a deal to end the war that might have a self-preservation you know instinct that surpassed all the people who've been killed before them where they see okay this is not going to end well for me and so maybe it's time to do something different because obstinance and intransigence has gotten a lot of their leadership killed and I guess once again the ball is in their court we just know that they have far far less ability now to try to continue to develop nuclear weapons and to develop the missiles used to protect that program which is the number one sort of joint goal of the US operation. Guy Benson's here on KCMO coming up two o'clock this afternoon on 957 FM streaming on the KCMO talk radio app you know we've heard a lot of references we heard it yesterday during the press conference from the president guy to you know the Venice Wayland model is that a model that can realistically work in a place like Iran or is that wishful thinking well there is some muscle memory of a more thriving pro-western society in Iran because it did exist before the revolution of 1979 and so there's something there we also have a great deal of information based on the Iranian diaspora around the world that much of the population is far more positively disposed toward us and the west and our values and cooperation all of those things they want to regain their civilization from this theocratic cult that runs the country now with Venice Wayland it's a lot more recent muscle memory that was a thriving democratic country in fact the hard left took power there by winning legitimate elections with Hugo Chavez and then slowly eroded democracy and then basically got rid of it and that's how you got you know the rule of Chavez and then Maduro and I think the people of Venice Wayland thrilled to see what we did with Maduro and we're all sort of curious when the next election will be and that sort of thing it's a lot more living memory available of democracy in Venice Wayland there is in Iran but again the Iranian or Persian street is especially in that part of the world much more pro-west pro-american than you would see in a lot of the neighboring countries even with governments that are more pro-america and allied with us right now which is why I think it is extraordinary when you do get some of these videos out of Iran and the bombings it's often accompanied by whoever is taking the video cheering and whooping so excited to see the follow through from the US from the Israelis taking out people that they view quite rightly as their oppressors for many decades I think it is impossible to know what would come next in Iran that's always an unanswered question an unknowable dilemma when you decide if you're going to engage in something like this I just feel like the known known so to speak the intended consequences of saying these two Americans the regime killed Americans for 47 years running they're trying to develop nuclear weapons to have this nuclear blackmail against the world in the United States and they're obviously irrational actors at the top of the regime that plus nuclear weapons is a very very scary combination we can never let that happen and one of the ways they want to have it happen is to build up so many missiles and drones that they can basically wield a veto over anything we might try to do about a nuclear program in the future and I think President Trump and the Israelis looked at that quite rightly with the support by the way of the Arab world and said yeah we're getting to a tipping point we can't let that happen hence the month plus there's more that we've now been witnessing Guy Benson's here on KCMO your colleague at Fox Bill Hammer reported here a senior U.S. official told him this morning quote we're absolutely in touch with Iran absolutely the talks have been positive if we get lucky we'll have something by the end of the day and quote so you know listen no one can predict what's going to happen tonight but do you think that there's a world where it's not as black and white as deal or no deal and it's extend the conversation how likely do you think that is Guy? Possible I mean there's also reports that the regime is now forcing human shields to you know stand on bridges and near power plants and that sort of thing right out of the dirtbag terrorist playbook to try to protect these places with their own civilians we saw that on another scale in Gaza of course with Hamas one of the one of the proxies of the Iranian regime but I don't know I assume there's a bunch of different contingencies I know that we just launched in the last several hours a major attack on Karg Island infrastructure is that a little preview is that a sense of okay this is the type of campaign bombing campaign etc attack that we're considering at large across the country is it like you know hey we show up we're gonna deal in our hands we're calling off the attack something like that or to your point Pete could it be less dramatic more like we've had a few breakthroughs it feels like the regime is getting more serious about actually bringing this to a conclusion and so the deadline is postponed and the conversations are gonna continue but so is our military action in the meantime that is an entirely plausible outcome to this but I don't know we'll see and I'm sure Hammer has good sources but I think the source probably there if I had to guess doesn't really know it's a small number of people who are in the know in that sense and again part of it keeps coming back to who actually right now has the authority and the power the implementation power not even theoretically to agree to something the ability the authority to actually carry something out if it's agreed to I'm not sure there's an easy answer to that question given the mass decapitation of so much of the leadership over the last month it's a great point Guy Benson you'll be listening on the drive home two to five right here on KCMO talk radio who knows what the day is going to bring we'll be tuned in coming up at two o'clock this afternoon Guy Benson who is broadcasting from London this week everything good on the other side of the pond there Guy? well I mean it's a beautiful day I spent some of this morning and early afternoon at church hills sort of war bunker where so much of World War II from the from the Brits and was was carried out underground fascinating experience a lot of stirring testaments there to the special relationship between us and the Brits and and it was a little sad for me to be looking back fondly on this long-standing relationship with the with the UK and thinking about how the star more government right now has just been a critical and weak and in some ways impeding our ability to do what needs to be done in Iran and I hope that that's a page in this special relationship that gets turned soon because it's been frustrating and and demoralizing and that's been part of my conversation with some of the Brits actually over here plenty of people of course agree with what I just said by the way here it's a very unpopular left-wing government and a very unpopular prime minister who's leading it but I'm a fan of and a believer in the special relationship and it's an honor always to be in London but very interesting times and just watching BBC almost all of the news on TV here is about us and what we're up to I'm not sure I was like I was watching some BBC I don't remember if I saw a story about Britain in the 20 30 minutes as I sat there and watched it was all Trump, Iran, astronauts etc Artemis too and I was like oh it is the British broadcasting company is it but maybe that's a sign of the times. That is so true Guy Benson hey Guy we'll be listening at 2 o'clock keep up the great work and thanks for being on the show. Oh thank you Pete.
