Too much of our world and our lives these days are filled with uncertainty, struggles and steps backward. Art and stories of chosen family, perseverance and conquering evils are needed now more than ever. I hope these stories are able to bring some more light and color to a world that is going more gray. We're alive. Descendants. Written and directed by Casey Wailand. Chapter 20 The Angel of Death Part 1 of 3 Well, what about all the pacifists here? She's shown they aren't hostile. Those may not be bad or aggressive, but again, what if it's only because Tanya's around? That she's communicating other commands with them and they're following her orders. We've seen her do it. I didn't think of that. How could that be possible? All the tribes have infected we've ever seen. Fall under an individual who maintains control of everything they do. That would mean, in this case, Tanya is their alpha. She's already one of them. From everything we've seen here, is it really that out of the question? I mean, how? She still knows things from her past. It sounds like she always has. Maybe it's only a partial infection because of her immunity and it only affects her judgment or certain survival functions. That's why she would disable the radio. Keep this place from being found, protecting those that live here. What if she didn't? Maybe the radio was just broken. It is pretty old. Now I know. She's done some messed up stuff already. I just don't know if she'd take it that far. Then we need to test it. See if this chip will fix the radio. Easy thing to try. Where is Tanya now? Last I saw her was in the tunnels when we were getting the fuel. I figured she'd be back by now. Then we don't have much time. Chip is in. Working the same so far, what's the frequency for Westport? I have that. Oh boy. This is an open channel. We need to be careful about Opsack. Operational security? Means anyone can hear. Well, yeah, I knew that. Regardless of what Tanya was trying to do, the republic still can't know about this place. Or us. Of course. Would you just try it already? Okay, okay, let me just say something simple. This is Guardian 1 and the field on an open channel. Come back Westport IC. Over. Westport IC. Come back on the emergency channel. Over. Maybe you're right. Maybe it was broken and Tanya already tried to fix it and couldn't. Told you. Guardian 1 checking in with command. Come back over. It does work better at night. Maybe we need to wait until a little later. Realize could be down. Wait, we got something. Guardian 1. This is Guardian 2. Come on. Open channel understood. That's Alex's voice. We have Alex. Over. Guardian 2. You ever go back and find that, a Ritual Mice and Vato? We left behind. Over. What? It's something only he wouldn't know. No thanks to you two. Over. He knows. Guardian 2. Confirm your IC location. Over. Negative. We're hoping you would confirm IC location. Over. Look, he's not in Westport either. And now he knows that I'm that. We are not over. Stand by for a secure channel option. Well, or Dean, is there any way that we could encrypt this? Talk more openly. Understood. We've been advised. We need to tell you stuff. Over. Yeah, that's too. You have no idea. Over. I, uh... I got this well. Ask Alex if the radio he's using has SDV on it. Secure digital voice. He's not going to know that. Try. Hey, uh... you have a Sierra Delta Victor on your unit? Look, I'm telling you. He's not going to know that. We do. But we would need a key. Key? Encryption key. Both radios need to enter the same number, but you can't just say it over the airwaves. Uh, who even is that? Who's on Combs now? Respond. Over. I have help here. He's with me. We need a code, but can't openly say it. Um... Maybe it could be something only Alex would know. Um... How long does it need to be? Eight characters, minimum. Shit. Okay. Uh... Hey, you know my birthday? Over. You know mine? Well, that's not going to work. Really close friends, I see. Just think of something simple, Nick. I am going to go watch for Tanya by the door. Okay, simple, simple, simple. Uh, things that only he would know. I barely even met Alex. This is on you. Oh. Great. If I knew this would matter, I'd try to get to know the guy a little better. I wish I could help. Clock is ticking. I know, I know. Okay. His MOS 15 series. I know that. Uh, standard issue caliber of his gun. Nine millimeter. Oh, got it. Your MOS number. Calibur of your standard issue and price of a slice of pizza I have Valentino's right next to the bearers. Okay, here. 159, Mike, Mike. 399. I hope that's enough. Unless he doesn't eat there. He may do make a mean peproni. All right, entering now. Yes! Okay, calm down, Will. We're done here, too. You should be clear. Damn. Had me worried. I was like three digits short on this end of what I knew you would know. Ha! I beat you to it. You're sure this is encrypted, right? Yeah. Grants says it scrambled on our end. Do you want me to check it out? It's good. Go. Come on. You're okay. You're not at Westport. I thought you took all the old timers back there. Nah. We had to split up. I saw their chopper heading back in that direction. They took yours, I think. Lex one? Yeah. We saw a burnt boarding at the airstrip. Must have been the same one. They're safe then, right? That's good. But what about you? Where'd you go? I can't really say. Even if we are encrypted. I'm allowed to say we aren't far from prim. And we're not in any danger now. We had to help some people. We're not in Grant or with me. Where are you? Who's Grant? The beast that held out of me. That's great. Probably shouldn't say either. But we're pretty far east of you. We've been trying to get a message to Westport. Have you heard from them? No direct response. But, uh, well, we did hear something. What was it? It was a distress call. Apparently, red guard soldiers have crossed the California border and are on the way there. Oh, no. Left by her, all our guardians were being called back in. And then the broadcast went silent. Oh, that's bad. Grant thinks they could have taken out Westport's radio repeaters. What? What happened? The Republic is moving on Westport. That wasn't what we heard at all when we were in justice. Or on the train going through the Republic. We're probably not publicizing it. Why would they? CJ thought this might happen. She's been preparing. We have no choice then. We need to return to Westport. Are you going back there? I have been looking into options, but I'm not going to be easy. But we may have something else. It's a long shot. Grant has an idea to help Westport out. A way to bring in extra support. Then you do it. All right. Whatever you can. And we'll do the same here. We will. Was that dot? Hi, Will. Hi, dot. I've been getting a little better every day. I'm helping her, but really, more of the other way around. I wouldn't have made it without her. Yeah. Hey, I got to say, man. I wouldn't have made it this far without you coming back for all of us in prime. I haven't forgotten. Good. I was hoping you did. First slice of Valentino's is on me when we get back. Shit. What are you talking about? Better be the old damn pie. Weeks two. And, uh, go with two now. All right. You got it, man. I'll see you both in Westport. That's going to take some time, but I will be there with as much help as I can bring. I'll hold you to that. Over and out. We're going home. Don't have much of a choice, right? Really? I need to let my people know. Wouldn't they already know somehow? I was their eyes and ears on the ground in Westport. And the only way we communicated was through our sat phone that I took with me, so I doubt they have any idea what's going on. Me too. I'm coming with you. Yeah, of course. You think I would leave you behind? I'm just going to be the one who's the plan all along, right? But if they're at war, I'm not like you. I'm not trying to fight. I can't. Calm down, okay? You've already done better than most soldiers I know. You'll be just fine. Oh, what do you think you say so? You're going to have to tell Tanya Nick. What do you think she'll say? Honestly, she doesn't really have much of a choice in the matter. Oh, boy. Come on. Come on. Did I say I like subtracted? Do you need to go outside? No. It's connected. Don't you like just sin messages or whatever? I thought you said it would take a while. I would only call and direct for an emergency, like this one, but the receiver isn't picking up. Maybe they're out doing evil spy things. This is serious. There would still be a way to connect to the hub. This is really bad. Is that the family's house in Irm? Huh? It's the only place they would be. It might be nothing, right? Don't you think you're just overreacting? No, I'm not. This has never happened before. It's been completely cut off. Even during the outbreak there were ways to check in. There are multiple fail safes. What could have happened? I've heard to be like this. It has to be big. Something major has to be going on at Irm. What the hell is that? The... Passend? Oh shit, someone's in there. I'm warning you. I'm on! There go up. There? There's a door. There's a door. There's a door. There's a door. There's a door. There's a door. There go up. There? Oh, thank god I made it here. What were you doing in the walls? You seriously messed up that blue dress. That's the least of my concerns. You're bleeding. It's not bad, but I need your help to get it out. The wood shrapnel's still in my arm. Oh shit. I got something for that. How does something like that even happen? I was shot at through the wall. What were you doing? Spying for my dad. I told you something like this would happen. But he was right. He was right about all of it. Hold still. That's in deep. Oh! Still some other splinters left. I need to get them all and these tweezers are really only meant for eyebrows. Can the splinters wait? I need to go! No, this is redwood. Quickly if we do not get this out. I'll go fast. Ah! So Oliver was right. Vincent and daddy Teneuto were involved in Michael's stuff. Vincent was the one who did it. Angel Senior wants to take over the family. I was sent to get proof. Then you got it? I dropped the recorder after they started shooting into the walls. Are you done? One last piece. Just get it out and wrap me up. I need to hurry. Ugh! No! We need to get the fuck out of here like I keep telling you. Forget all this. They're going to be coming after you next. I can't. I have to tell Oliver first. My dad needs to know. You don't owe him anything. Shit's about to go down and you're going to get caught up in it and drag me into it with you. You're right. You would be. Take this. It's a map of the passage through Eram. Use it. Vincent's plane is still at the airport. They were supposed to refuel it by now. If I don't make it back, get out of here. If you don't make it back, why take the risk of error? Come with me. Oliver's believed in me through all of this. I can't let my dad down. Please. I can't. Then go. Hurry. I'll wait for you. You're always doing that for me, aren't you? Seems like it. Now go. Thank you. Descendants will continue after a word from our sponsors. Dragged from his car at gunpoint in Syria, British photojournalist John Cantley vanished into the dark heart of ISIS. I'm Manvin Rana and our podcast series, Last Man Standing, with a time special correspondent, Antony Lloyd, investigates John Cantley's disappearance and inspired the gripping new BBC TV documentary, Hostage. Listen to the investigation that started it all. Search for Lost Man Standing and you'll prefer Podcall Stop. And now, we continue with Descendants. Excuse me, please. Thank you. I just need to... Damn, what happened to you? And what did you do to my dress? I can't right now. Where is my dad? Where is Oliver? Over by the piano. Thank you. If you need help, I'll be fine. It's the newest one they have ever made in 2009. Dad! Oh, would you excuse me? You couldn't have changed first maybe? I didn't have time. We should take this conversation elsewhere. All of it. Did you get proof? I did, but then I... You all right? You are. Blackbird! Oh, you mean me? You know in a place like this, you have to be a little more specific. So many cousins and all. Vincent killed Michael and Tunuto Senior wanted him to. Well, I say it's fairly easy to know who Rat was scurrying around in the walls. Right, Vincent? Yeah, looks like it. I don't know what you think you heard, but that definitely wasn't it. And he wants to take over the family. Now that has some truth to it. You're a traitor! Vera, let me handle this. Oh, you're going to handle this yourself now for once, huh? Did you hear that, everyone? No, you're a place. This may be your house, but I'm still in charge. Everyone is quite aware of that. It's very clear. The evidence is all around you. And deceits at the tables. And a family that remains scattered, divided. You want to talk about evidence? How about creating a false vendetta? Assasinating a prominent figure in Westport? All based on what? Vincent was almost caught. He exposed this family. False vendetta. False vendetta. My son was killed by that man. Michael never harmed Angel. What? He was killed by another family member. Scratch! And you know all about her. Don't you, T'Nudol. How unbalanced she could be. Claire Amzel. That's impossible. It was left out of the published tower journals. She pulled the trigger. And then she went on to kill Durai as well. And you know this how? The original journals in Westport. Oh, okay. How convenient. Thousands of miles away penned in the heart by one of our enemies. Oliver, I know you have a soft spot for Westport, but this is pathetic. Even after all your training bearer. Still such an obvious liar. I am not. There's proof. Do you have it? Proof of any of this? Did anyone here was even involved with what you claim? I... Farah? I dropped the recorder. She dropped the recorder. Of course she did. Now, it's true. I may have blamed Michael, but it doesn't mean I had any involvement in his death. And I may have alluded to how I would be a better leader for us, but frankly at this point, who wouldn't? My friends, who wouldn't? Now, why don't we talk about what we do know? The other vendettas from Westport that our dear patriarch has overlooked? What about the killing of Claremzo? Scratch? Were you accused of familiar sight? Or the murder of her brother, John? What about their deaths? No retribution was made there. We simply moved on. Same as my son, Angel Jr. And derived Blackburn of your own house. If Westport had pages missing from the journals regarding them, I'm sure you'd all be for retrieving those now, wouldn't you? Oliver, you did spend so much time there after the outbreak, why didn't you recover those for us if you had the family's best interest in mind? How could we possibly move on knowing that killers may still be at large? I was there, but I didn't read or find anything that would warrant our involvement with Claremzo or John Amsel. As for Durai, the retribution was already done. Scratch is dead because those Westport books you claimed said so? How can we believe any of this? Again, that sauce bar turning a blind eye. Your relationship with that place has clearly affected your loyalty. And her being here is just another indication of that. Hey, Vera. She is my blood and she has the same right to be here as yours. Well, maybe that should change. Maybe we should in fact discuss new leadership. By any means. What is he saying? That's not going to happen. It's the old law. A way to remove our very own little infection that has spread through our family. To cut it out, root, and stem. Does that mean Vera too? Oh yeah. That's not possible, is it? It is. And for good reason. Westport has done more to expose us to the world than anyone else. Maybe that's why so many members have never returned. And we can't possibly think about moving on. If we have the first daughter of Westport as one of us. Her allegiance has already been made. See for yourselves. It's tattooed right there on her wrist. I have done everything I've been asked. Every exercise you've given me. What else do you want? Passing a few tests doesn't exactly make you a family member miss. It runs much deeper than that. There isn't a person here who believes that more than I do. But if you are in charge, this family would serve only your goals and ambitions. If that's how it's going to be, it might as well get on with it. You know the rules, Oliver, as well as I do. There's one option. Do you agree? Agreed what? Whatever it is, don't let him. They're killers, both of them. Sweetheart, that applies to practically everyone here. Don't sweetheart me. Just goes to show how little you know about the families to think that that has any power here. Now, do you agree, Oliver? If it's the only way to finally get rid of a dead weight that's been dragging this family down. My sentiment exactly. We have enough family members present for a vote. Who have you agreed to this challenge? Raise your hands to second. I'll second that. Well, well, well. Look here. We have a majority. Just waiting on you, Blackburn. Are we doing this? What exactly is he talking about? A duel. The losers severed all ties to the family. Their entire lineage. What? No, dad, you can't. There has to be another way. There was. I needed proof of what they've done. That was why I said you. What'll it be, Oliver? You really only have one option to save face. They're losing confidence. Agreed. I'll see you at dawn. Why wait? We can finish this tonight. Dad, dad, no. Fine. Courtyard. Two hours. Done. Vincent, come. Is this what you want, Vincent? Killing Michael wasn't enough. Stop this. There's nothing I can do. He's made up his mind. He's been lying to you about everything. You know it. Michael never did that to Angel. I can get proof. Just give me a chance. At this point, that probably wouldn't even matter. Wait, Angel, your brother. He turned his back on the family. He didn't want any part of this. You know that too, right? With Tanuto for a father, I wouldn't blame him. Vincent, come. I need to go. You know? You know if your dad loses, you'll be cut out too. I thought the family meant everything to you. He won't lose. All the times, Nick and I could have let you die in those arenas. We had your back. We trusted you. You were our friend. Fuck! You Vincent! Fuck you! Sarah, we should go. You can't do this, Dad. You can't. It's too late. This is the last option I have. Please, no, please. Dad. If anything happens to me, you'll still have the protection of the family. You just won't have any rank. No matter what, you'll be okay. No, I won't. I don't care about any of that. I only care about you. You would give all this up for me? Without a second thought. There's a plane. It's ready. We can leave this place right now. Never come back. You can hide anywhere you want. I know you can't. It's not that simple. And are you so sure I'll lose? I mean, give your old man a little credit. I don't want to take that chance. Do you know what would become of this place if T'Nudot were left in charge? I love you. You know that. But I also care about this family. This is the only way I stand to protect it now. What if I got proof for Westport? The real journals or or that video you mentioned? What if I was able to get that recorder back with their confession? The duel has already been agreed to. It will happen. Nothing can stop that now. Please, Dad. Vera, don't make this any harder than it has to be. I'm begging you. I need to prepare. Please. Dad, please. I still have my doubts that you could take off in this. Is barely any road for a runway. Is that a problem? It'll be fine. The plane isn't that heavy. And remember, I landed it here before, didn't I? I would give it. But now there's more people on board. Extra cargo. Did you do the math? Will! Relax. I've got this. But... Will, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering cheering And then, we'll go check those. Oh yeah, the right people. But more of a wait. Oh, we gotta check in. Fuck! Nick, are you sure he's all right? He's kind of freaking out. Yeah, ma, he's just nervous about Westport. Honestly, I am too. We don't really know what we're flying back into. Stood all the extra rifles in ammo for takeoff. Held onto these, just in case. Oh, sweet. Thanks. You really think those passives might attack? If Will's even a bit right about her, who knows how Tanya's gonna react when we tell her that we're leaving. I'm not taking any chances. Okay, so is it dark enough? Can we take off soon? Let's see if Tanya's back yet from the caves. She has to be by now, right? I would think so. Hey, Will, wait here. We'll be back. I'm coming to. You need backup. I'll make grab my bag. Me too. Ma, maybe you should stay behind with Will. You'll need an extra voice to help smooth things over with Tanya. Someone reasonable. What? You think that I could be a little rough? Do I really need to say it? No. Still no contact with the families? No, nothing. It's very strange. I sure hope Vera's okay. I'm sure she is. Vera? So is that finally becoming a thing now? What? No. No, Mom. Look, I'm just worried about her. That's it. Uh-huh. And what's that supposed to mean? Nothing. No use lie in man. Pegs is pretty good at getting information out of people. I should know better than most family members. I will take that as a compliment. Okay, come on. Look, I don't need this right now. I'm still trying to figure out how to tell Grandma. Tanya will understand. Or she should. We have a legitimate reason to leave. Unless she no longer understands reason. Oh, uh, there she is. She's back. And just sitting by the entrance. She knows. Okay. You're okay, little. You'll be fine. You'll be fine. It's in Westport. Eden isn't bad, right? Right? But what if it is? What if they make you shoot people? Not infected people. What if they make you shoot real people? Or you can capture it again. Oh no, no, no, no. They wouldn't let that happen, right? Look at you. Look at your width. You're with. You're with good, good, competent soldiers. They know what to do in situations like this, right? Right? Oh, God. What if they take you? What if you could take him by the republic? What if they know what you did? Oh, God. They'll string you up. They'll string you up like the thief in justice. Oh, it's worse. No, no, no, no, no. I can't do that. I can't. No, I can't. Oh, it's just too much. It's too much. No. Oh no, what have you done? What have you done? Oh, God. Wait. No. Why did you do that? Why? Why will? Why? God, he's stupid. He's stupid. Why would you do that? He's stupid. What? What? What is that? What now? Grandma. Tonya. You'll leave it, aren't you? We, um, we have to. We just heard back about Westport. They're going to be attacked. They need us. I abandoned them once. I can't do it again. How do you know that's happening? Will fix the radio. And how did he do that? With the chip you took out. Oh. When were you going to tell us about that? Eventually. Once I was able to have you understand. Grandma, we both know that. It was never going to happen. I know. But I had to try. Look, I'll come back when I can. OK? When this is all over. Nicholas, you don't have to lie. No, I'll make sure he does. Even if I have to fly him here myself, I promise. Don't make promises. You can't keep. I said the same when you were little. That I'd always come back home to you, Nicholas. And now, here I am. Well, this will be different. Pigs. No. No, it won't be. What? What is that? Yeah, I hear it, too. Which way is it coming from? Oh, no, Tonya. Is this you? Are you doing this? No. No, I don't know what that is. Hem, hem. You're calling up your pacifists? Help! Can you maybe not do that? Why? There, coming over the hill on horses? They're riding them? Those. I've seen them, shits before. Nom-Rama infected that enslaved horses. Whoa. What do we do? What do we do? We'll look there's only five of them and a hundred of us. Just wait. Yeah, I don't count your pacifists as us. Nick. Just stay behind me, mom. I have enough rounds. Dean and I should be able to take them down. Nicholas, wait. Don't shoot. Mana. Why not? Nick, hold. They're stopping. If they come any closer, they're done for. Oh, my God. All those poor horses, they're exhausted. But from where? Where did they come from? One of the riders is dismounting. Looks different than the others. Not a Nom-Rama, whatever. But that dude's infected. Look how it moves. Don't shoot, Nick. Just wait. Oh, look. There's something in his hand. What would an infected be carrying? Is that a briefcase? Now. How? Daniel. To be continued in the next episode of We're Alive Descendants. And now a word from our sponsors.
