Insights
  • Unresolved trauma from past institutional failures can manifest as violent revenge decades later, particularly when accountability is absent
  • Small communities are vulnerable to cyclical violence when historical incidents remain unexamined and perpetrators face no consequences
  • Personal loss and grief can be weaponized to justify harm against others, blurring victim and perpetrator roles
  • Environmental hazards combined with institutional negligence create compounding liability and long-term community impact

Episode 5. Oscar! Oscar! Eva. Yeah? How much longer have we got? Maybe an hour or two until more severe weather hits. We haven't had an alert, so that's good. Anything at all your end? No, we haven't. Wait. We found a hat. A cap. Suzanne there! Yes? Have they found him? Not yet. Was Oscar wearing a cap? Yes. Blue with the wolf on the front. That's it. Axel, where are you? We're nearing the river. He knows not to go near the river. Hold on, Axel. Yep. Magnus, where are you? Over here! What? Bike. Oxel, we found the bike. It doesn't look damaged, but it's been thrown behind a bush. We're going to continue up along the river and spread out. We'll walk up also. Maybe he's sheltering in the caves? It doesn't look accidental. No, it doesn't. Stay in contact. We'll meet you at the caves. Yep. Over. Okay, everyone. We're going to fan out from the side of the river. Keep calling out his name. Go. The rain's getting worse. Where the hell is he? You said it wasn't accidental. Kids don't tend to throw their bikes behind bushes. Why would someone take him? Around here? I don't know. It doesn't... I think it's all connected to Orsgård, somehow. Orsgård? But Oscar doesn't have anything to do with Orsgård. I know. I just... Lena? Yes? Metrologist Institutes have just sent through an updated weather alert. How bad? Orange warning. Starting when? Possibly as early as 8. Okay, so we've got a little over three hours. They said it's developing quickly and to be vigilant. They are monitoring and updating their systems every 15 minutes. What does that mean? It means it may get upgraded to a red alert. If it does, we'll need to get everyone off the field. It will be too dangerous to continue. How will we know? They will send a message via the emergency alarm system, and the town warning siren will call. Okay. We'll beat you up by the caves. We're not far. Everybody! We have worse weather approaching. It will hit in the next couple of hours. We need to go fast. Go, go, go! Oscar! Oscar! Oscar! Lena, the caves are off ahead. Okay, let's get everyone and regroup. Oxal, anything? Nothing. We've looked through the caves. He's not here. Who's down there? You've heard of him! He might not be out there! What does that have to do with Oskari? I don't know, but if it isn't connected with Oskar as a business, then everything that has happened has one other thing in common. Valborg Academy. Valborg? And Oskar 5. You said a boy died. It was 20 years ago. How is this helping us? You're wasting time. We've looked everywhere. He's not out there. Who the hell takes a 10-year-old boy? It doesn't make sense. Henrik, we're trying to figure out who might have taken him or we won't find him. What happened back then? Tell me. Henrik. Henrik. Mathon. We made a mistake. It was all part of a ritual and we all did these challenges to show we were a Balborg brother. He was supposed to climb into the well and abandon well and spend the night there. In a well? It was based on the story about Mimisbrunner, the well where the god of Odin exchanged one of his eyes for the wisdom of Mimir. He was going to get wisdom and experience by doing the challenge that was the setup and we didn't know about the water. They think it was a glacial thaw combined with the rain the previous day. It caused the groundwater to rise suddenly. But you knew he was there. Yes, we did. But the whole challenge was for him to be on his own. We went to find him. He drowned. He had torn his fingers to shreds trying to get out. And yet the ritual still seemed to be going. Who was he? The boy who died. Udin Ulofsson. We thought of the challenge because of his name. Lena, Axel, that's the red alert. We have to get everyone to get... I am not leaving until I find my son. Henrik, you have to. Where was it? What? Uddin, you said he drowned in a well. Yes, but... Where? Where is the well he went into? It's... it's in our north fields on the other side of the fjell. It was boarded up after it happened and Oscar couldn't have gone there. He could have been taken there. He's not in the well. We need to keep searching. You want to go chase some idiot theory? Fine. But I'm going to look for my son. Henrik, stop! Magnus, do you know how to get there? I do. Okay, how long will it take us? In this weather, 30 minutes if we go up and over. Fast as a foot past the old tree. You think he's in the well? I don't know. I could be wrong. I hope I'm wrong. But we don't have anything else to go on, and we've looked everywhere. Jesus, if you're right. We need to hurry. I'll get everyone back to the village and get Ingrid to meet you there as fast as she can. Axel, Vidal's brother's name. I know. It was Odin. Is this field? There. That's the well. The lid isn't secured. It's moving. Jesus. He's here. Hurry. Oscar! She's on her way, Oscar. Magnus, tell him. Oscar The Magnus My mother pervade Jesus Lena the water I know I going down there No Lena you can go I go I the lightest and you need to pull both of us up I'm going. You know it. I have to go. Jesus. Okay. Okay, I'm going to tie the rope. No, no, no. Use it to stand in with one leg whilst holding on. Use the other leg to push off the side, okay? Yeah. Yeah, okay. Ready? Yep. Ready. Okay, I'm going to secure the rope. Hold on. Okay. Go! Oscar! Oscar! Mom, no! It's getting cold down here The water's coming in We need to get him up Quickly I'm gonna tie the rope around him You pull him up And I'll stay here I can pull the rope up No, just get him up The water's rising Okay, Oscar Oscar Magnus He's unconscious He's unconscious I've tied the rope around him And I've put my coat around his hand As extra protection Okay Let's go He'll be okay He's ready Pull him up Carefully Go Oh no! Oh no! Oh no, the water is coming in faster! I got him! I got him! That's good. I have to Try to run around you It's so cold I can't make my fingers work I'm I think so I think so. Oh, go. Go. Go! Go, let go. Hey. Get in there. Okay. I've got you. You're here. Ingrid! Stop! What a mess. Heat a blanket. Lena, I need you to let go of the ropes so I can get this around you. I can't. It felt like... It felt like the car among us. I thought I couldn't... I know. You're out. Oscar is out. The helicopter's here. We're getting into Ingrid's car. Susanna and Ingrid are going with Oscar. Let's go. This is not the future we were promised. Like, how about that for a tagline for the show? The morning of floods and landslides across the region. I don't know that you get any connection. Come on. Eva, are you back at the office? Yes. Did you find him? We did. He was in the well? Yeah. We're on our way back. Eva, I need you to look up something for me. A boy died at Valborg Academy 20 years ago. His name was Odin Olafsson. Give me a moment. I can see an Odin Olafsson, enrolled at Valborg 2004-2005. He died in 2005. That's him. His father was Per Olafsson, died in 2018. His mother, Maria Olafsson, and he had a brother, Gustav Olafsson. Gustav? Not Vidar? No. Oh, hold on. Full name, Gustav Vidar Olafsson. Where is he now? There's a Vidar Jonsson living in Wolf Valley. Is that him? Is that the same person? Hold on. Yes, his man's maiden name was Jonsson. He must have changed it. Thank you, Eva. We have to go to Vidar's house. Now? Hi. Axel? Axel, if you get this message, we're on our way to Vidar's house. Meet us there. Have you got Henrik's number? Yes, in my phone. Come on, no! Shit! Jesus! Come on. I can't see any lights. Oxen? Lema, I got your door. Oxel, say that again. Oxel. I've got the front door. Okay, coming. Monglis, I need you to go find Henrik. What do I tell him? Stay at his house and wait for us. Gotcha. Oxel. Over here. Can you see anyone in there? No, nothing. Hello? Hello? Uli Thi? Vidar! Okay, I'm going to open the door. Are you covering? Yes. Hello? Vidar? Uli Thi? Vidar? No one in the living room. Kitchen clear. Bida? Oxen! She upstairs Hold on Oxel, the door at the back of the kitchen. It's locked. Does she have a key? It's the basement. Vidar has the key. Oxel, I'm going to open. Cover. Yeah. Okay. One, two, three. Okay. Jesus, look at the wall. What does it say? Vidar, Odin's heaven there Vidar is the avenger of Odin Newspaper clippings about Valborg Academy and the accident Wolf Valley tragedy, a boy dies in unsecured well Funeral of Wolf Valley boy They spread his ashes up by Fendry's tooth Huxer, the Oscord Five, the same picture Henrik had He's crossed out their faces Except for one Henrik The date I kept thinking why can't I remember anything about a boy dying in a well But look at the date It happened on the same day. What then? The accident. I was in a car with my mum. We crashed over the mountainside into the water. I made it out through a broken window. She didn't. She died on Midsommar's Eve. Today? 20 years to the day. Yes? I'm at the house. Henley isn't here. Lars hasn't seen him. He never returned. Okay, we're coming your way. Stay there. If this is about the Oskar 5 and about Vyadar avenging his brother's death... Then Hendrik is next. He was out searching with us, Vyadar. But by the time we got to the caves, he was no longer there. And Hendrik left on his own. If he's got him, where would they be? They can't have gone far in this weather. Oh, shit! Where would he go, Idai? I don't know. He walks in the forest a lot, by the river. Where does the river lead to? Fendri's tooth. My mom used to tell me the story. The wolf Fendri swallows the god Odin during Lagnarok. To avenge him, Lidar kills Fendri by tearing his jaw apart. All that was left was his tooth, where the river comes out of the mountain. It said in the article, that's where they scattered Odin's ashes. Go. Let's view that span. There's a small track up to the base of the tooth in the river. Ready? Let's go. Upsell, this way. Careful where you... Yes! Bomb! You okay? Yeah. Go. Keep going. The river comes out just over here. Oxel! I see him. Nehmo. It's left there. I see him. Vidor! Vidor! Right! Vidor! Stop! It's over! Stay back! He's not a step away from Henrik! Now! No! He's going to die for Odin! Odin was an accident! They killed him! They didn't know the water would rise! He didn't want to go! He didn't want to go! But he thought... He thought... If he went into the well, he would be a Walburg brother! They told him! They promised him! They killed him! And I didn't protect him! It wasn't your fault, Vidar! Tonight! Tonight! Vidar avenges Odin! Tonight, Wolf will die! Vidar! I make a sacrifice for Odin! A blood sacrifice! Vidar! Put it down! They take everything! They destroy everything! They think they're gods! They're not! I'll show them how they're not! One by one, the wolves will be dead! Fydar! Odin, hear you! The fardythet shall see! Axel! Open the door! Axel! For Odin! No! Fydar, stop! Fydar! Lena? This way. Look up there. The northern lights. Yeah. Nordlyset. The Bifrost bridge. It connects Midgår, our human world, to Aasgår, the realms of the gods. It's like a rainbow across the whole sky. They say it's the light that shines off the armor of the Valkyries, who guide the souls of the warriors to the resting place in Valhalla. Just warriors? Everyone. Do you have to go? Yeah, I have to go. Are you afraid? No, my love. I will miss you. I love you, Lena. I love you, Mama. Oh, hey, Augusta. Hey. Come in. They found Vido's body. The river carried him all the way to the Fjord. He let himself fall in? Yeah, he did. The gunshot wound wasn't fatal. And Henrik? A concussion and a broken arm. The knife missed the artery. Just. I spoke to an old colleague in Ökokrim. They handle economic and environmental crimes. They're very interested in speaking to Henrik about his investors and expansion plans. So, it's not over. Thought you were supposed to keep out of corners you don't belong. I not in the corner My contact is I going back to Oslo tonight Ah invited back in the fold Yeah for now You Not yet. The full deeds to the cabin. Why? Oskar has made an offer for it. Are you selling? No, I'm not. I need to reclassify the cabin to a summer house to avoid buplicht. Buplicht? Well, that's why I'm here. I received a letter that said I had to live here or sell. From the local council. Yeah, I know a guy in it. Funny, so do I. He's a great guy. He is. I'll put in a good word. So you think you might stay for the summer? I think so, yeah. There will be Norlis tonight. Northern nights? They say it's the light that shines. Off the armour of Valkyries, guiding the souls of the dead to Valhalla. Want to go see them by the old tree? Picnic dinner? Yes. Very much. Can you help me with this box? Yes. Let me just defy death from these steps. Hey. Hey. I heard you wrapped up your case. I did. Sort of. Sort of? Mungus tells me I was never very good at letting go. I like Mungus. I do too. I went to see my mum's grave today. And how was that? I have so many questions. I mean, would I have turned out this way if I hadn't lost her? You're not so bad. I just feel so angry that I was robbed of so many years with her. I know. Moving on feels like... I've become leaving her behind all over again. You didn't leave her behind. I did. You couldn't save her, Lena. If I hadn't stayed out, if I hadn't been late, if I'd put on my seat pole... It wasn't your fault. But it should have been me who died. Do you think your mum would have thought that? No. No. I don't think so either. And I don't think she would want you to think it. I miss her. So much. I know. She used to sit at the end of my bed, telling stories or just singing softly until I fell asleep. And I tried to stay awake just a little bit longer, I just... Just to listen to her. She sounds amazing. She really was. Ingrid gave me an old recording of her singing today. We were on the beach. It was midsummer. Will you play it to me? Yeah. Hang on.
