β’Feb 4, 20264 months agoSummary
Ice Cube discusses his transition from N.W.A. to solo success, his pioneering work in film production and screenwriting, and his business acumen in navigating the entertainment industry. The conversation covers his iconic films like Friday, his collaboration with Dr. Dre, and his philosophy on maintaining creative control and authenticity throughout his career.
Insights
- Early mentorship from industry professionals (like publicist Pascha Renee) was critical to Ice Cube's business awareness and ability to negotiate better deals than peers
- Creative control and artistic authenticity are more valuable long-term than short-term financial gains, as demonstrated by his rejection of unfavorable contracts
- Diversification across music, film production, directing, and screenwriting creates sustainable career longevity beyond typical industry expiration dates
- Collaborative chemistry and shared creative vision matter more than individual star power in franchise success (Friday series example)
- The film industry requires different skill sets than music but benefits from the same storytelling and character development abilities

And then they say he's gonna be in Atlanta and I drove. You went back home, you had the handle business, and you flew back. But we didn't hesitate. We didn't hesitate. We got it. So we doing this and Ice Cube, man, he came in. And go front. Big, big, big. Well, you ordered it. I'll get a little star truck, man. No, I can't. I saw you with little nervous. So that was like, I was kind of, I like that. I like that. I like that. I'm a decent civilian. I'm just crazy, man. America's the most wanted. America, yeah. America's the most wanted. All the legend that we see it, I could have went for hours. We could have done. I had a bad question. But I've seen that his people was, it's cool. But we got it done. This is what our jobs is. We come, we get it done, and we relax. And it's gonna be another time. And we relax as well. And we relax. So we can go about to say words. I don't know. I don't want to. Anybody have a bottle? We go to Chick-fil-A. It's kind of crazy. That sounded wrong, right? It sounded like cold word. I'm not even, like I actually like the Chick-fil-A. The Chick-a-Sally sandwich. What? I don't know. I'm just trying to clean it up. But we got ice cube and we heard this couple of our casters, there's out there hating. Right. You gonna go with that? Elliot will send him, Sally. Elliot. Why you hated him? Yeah, I hate it. I hate it. We're gonna tell you why. He's doing trick-tanks and not rap radar. Because you're not on the radar. Rap radar. You're not even on anybody's radar. And you're lucky I ain't call home and say you made a wrong move. You're taking, you're doing a little direct to that title. But we'll respect you, Elliot, because you have it. Other than this, I thought you turned over a new leaf and I thought you stopped hating but apparently not. But we don't care. We got love for you. We want you to hug. I forgot to come back, Jack, who had a cube on his head. Yeah, because he also hated on us saying come back, Jack, this is a fact. It's not just us. So the fact that he hated on us both, I kind of like, I'm not even mad. Like I'm not mad at cool with you hating on us both is cool. But you know, get your weight up. And Alex, you hate up. No, he should come to the show. Yeah, we're gonna keep giving it to you, Elliot. And he's the guy to show. At least to relax. Yeah, you gotta relax. Relax. Relax for you. But you and B dot come on. We're gonna have Mr. Lee call you and say, relax. Every game. But you know, for the people that's listening, we just playing around. We actually don't care what they do. They can hate. We're gonna still do us. But we got to our last shirts. All right, cool. We website star rock clothing dot com. You can also buy weed from bed. I'm just playing. Can't buy the weed. What did you say? Can you buy money? You're losing bricks. Oh, yeah. You just did. You just did. Yeah, yeah. I mean, fucking up your ads. As you can big enough your ads, it's just don't Molly in there for some no reason. Like, take a Molly as well. Like, you know what I mean? It's just retarded. But also big on tomorrow. Once again, for they came here, Cube had a right Russian with a Martel. He drank very lightly. He's working. He's working. And we was his last interview. He actually went to colleges and he went. And it was the greatest experience for us. You know, let's just come out here. Because the thing about it is we want people to know that we're serious about what we're doing. And we'll come to the artist. You know, pause because we know other shows won't. Other shows won't do that. And so we're a part of that. And I actually got to see Fist Fight at level confused me on the hashtags. He gave me like seven different hashtags. I didn't remember which one. It was teacher fight at first. It was Fist Fight. And I really want you guys to go out there and support it. Because I'm not saying this because he's on the show. I'm saying this because there's actually not really you haven't done. I'm going to be a guy. I am not. I'll go back to you. You know, because I'm open. If I hated the movie, I probably would have still big it up. But this is not the case. Like this is not the case here. Like I actually love the fucking movie. And I'm actually homegirls. You offered me free tickets. And I was still going to take the free tickets. But I'm still going to go out support and definitely going to buy popcorn. Definitely. Like I'm going to support. Because it's a great movie. And I love comedies. Can we shout you out? Or you want to be behind the scenes? So to be straight, tell me what you don't like a movie. You don't buy popcorn? Alex. Alex? Yeah. Big of Alex. From Atlanta, what company? Or you know company? Alex. What? Come here. Say it on the live. Come here. That's it. That's the mad complicated to pronounce. I'm sorry. Alex. Alex. Alex. Alex. What's the name again? I'm sorry. Alex. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We got it. Hey, Hank Sangrille. Hope you're fine. This is your boy in ORE. What up is DJ EFN? In this street, Chancellor of the F**ker Podcast. Make some noise. And right now it's an absolute honor for me to introduce this man. Not only is he one of my favorite rappers, he's also one of my favorite people. Like the person that he is right now, I strive to be that. You know what I'm saying? It's a person that writes his own movies, reduces in his own movies, who you can tell he hand picks his roles. I do a lot of things in life, and I say, if ice cube ain't doing it, I ain't doing it. Like I live like that, like in real life. I'm like, yo, somebody offered me pink popcorn. I'm like, I don't think a cube ain't done. You know what I mean? So in life, I do that. So I'm so honored to have in the building with the drink champs. It's the first time hip hop is controlling media. My brother, DJ EFN is a DJ. I'm a hip hop artist, and we transitioned. And we now in the journalistic point of view. And we got, this is like a big, big, big city. Goddamn it. Motherf**king West Coast, legend, ice cube. And I'm motherf**king building, baby. I make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a make a I've been working with New Line, thank you. Been working with New Line for a minute. And they had this project that they brought to me. They said Charlie Day was attached to it. And I've been wanting to work with Charlie for a minute because I think his form of comedy is unique. And so I just knew if we ever did something together it would be lit. It all came together. The director is a guy that he worked with. You know, on always sunny, he shot a couple episodes of that. So, you know, the synergy was right. The role was right. And, you know, we came out here and did our thing. We shot it out in Atlanta. Right. And then you got Tracy Morgan of a turn of Tracy Morgan is in this. Yeah. And he's funny as fuck. Yeah. Oh my god. Like, you like, because sometimes, you know, when a person goes through a tragic accident, you almost, yeah, you almost feel like that it's something going to be different about him. But he was straight up Tracy Morgan. And it was hilarious. Yeah, you know, it was just good to see that dude. I had work with him before on First Sunday. Did a movie together. That's right. First Sunday, y'all brought the church. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And what's funny is that it's cute, right? It's cute. Yeah. Yeah. Got to go with the money. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He had an ankle bracelet on his ankle, you know, like in real life. So, the man, after we shot, he had to go straight to the hotel. And, you know, he said, man, doing that movie, you know, really thought about it. Got my life together after that. Well, it was cool to see him, you know, on the other side of this accident. Right. You know, just a happy guy, you know, he can still be informed. Nothing happy, yeah. So, now I'm going to be a little bit all over the place because this is something that hit me crazy when I watch straight out of comp. Yeah. Was your wife comes over to you and says, how is Friday coming along? Yeah. So, did you write Friday when you were still doing NWA? Yeah, not. I was like, I had just left the group, but we wrote it in about 94, me and DJ. What the fuck, wait a minute. You wrote Friday in 94? 94. We shot it in 95. Wow. This is a rough, that's a certificate time or right after? Right after. And then it came out in 95? Yeah, we shot it in 95. What happened Friday came out later? No, 95. So, but you, you, you, so you had the force like to, to write this movie. Yeah, you know, we were fans of Hollywood shuffle, which is a Robert Townsend comedy about, you know, black people's experience going through in Hollywood. So, it just, we heard that he had done that movie off of credit cards, basically. He shot that movie, you know, kind of buying credit, I mean, getting credit cards and, and, you know, charging everything and, and kind of pieced it together. So, he was like, yo, that's what we're going to do. We're about to make a movie. So, we in Poo Star, writing it. We were saying, DJ Poo, we were fans of in living color, too, you know. So, it started coming together and, and, and, new line got wind of it. And it was like, yo, we'll make it, we'll make it, we'll give you a new line. You're credit cards. No, yeah, I'm running, but new lines since Friday, you've been wrestling with me. Yeah, I've been working with new lines since Friday. And is that Stanley? Is that Stanley? Yeah, that's my man. That's my cousin, man. I, I, I keep what people grasp to this day, because of him. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't go on like this. Whoa, it's been his glass, man. Yeah, it's a stand for man. Stanley ain't letting you walk in his grasp, man. No, that's a stand forεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεεε and everybody ended up buying them. We kind of felt the same way with the movie that it wasn't too many people in Hollywood like us. And this movie, you know, is a little different than what people used to. All right. So we felt like only a niche group of people would like this movie. Because that was, that was very, it was very crazy that you had such a luxurious career as a hip hop artist. You were part of the arguably the best group of all times. In my opinion, the best group of all times, then you go have your own solo success. Why did you even think like, let me do a movie next? Um, I got bit by the bug working with John Singleton. Boys and a put me in boys and a hood. Right. And you know, one day I was over at this crib and he was like, Yo, Q, when you're going to write a movie? I'm like, what? I'm like, China came over here to have a beard. I didn't hear. To, you know, get put to work. Right. He was like, no, no, I think you can do it. I'm like, what makes you think I could do it? He said, the record you write, you know, so vivid. I know you go out of the movie. Right. So, um, that night it's a trip. I went to the computer store and bought a computer. Right. And, um, got the programs I needed. That was back when you had to load all the damn programs into the computer. And, uh, and I started writing the script that night. I didn't know what I was doing. I just started. Right. The first two scripts I wrote was WAP. Carbits. The third one was Friday. You know, seeing that one get made, I kind of knew what I was doing. Right knew what I was doing wrong. Just kept on from. Now, who was the different on Friday? Um, Evgari Gray, the same. Evgari Gray, the same record. That's kind of content. And Steve Car did a Friday too, right? Yeah, he did, uh, next Friday. Oh, okay, okay. I worked with Steve Carbits. He's crazy. Yeah. So now, now, easy, easy, easy, easy, he said one of the most prolific lines in life. He said, I used to write the rhymes that I say. Yeah. And nobody thought he was a sucker for that. Like, but right now, Drake and all these people, like, how did you feel when you heard about, like, the, the, the Drake thing? Um, I don't think it's a big deal. I think you got two categories, you know, of, of MC's, you know, you got MC's who can just kind of grab the mic and just rip and they, you know, naturally that. And then you got guys who, you know, make good records and make it, you know, and that's really what it's all about. What come, what's coming out to speak is when it comes to this record guy. Because when you were writing, what you writing it from his perspective, what you like saying, I'm going to write it from Eric's or was it like, it was, I mean, his perspective is our, my perspective. We all come from the same area going through the same issues. So I never looked at it like I'm writing the easy, so record, only he could do. Right. You know, I just took his name out and put my name in there. You know, there'd be my rhyme. Now, did it happen like that in the movie? I think, yeah, I was writing a rhyme for East Coast dudes. Yeah, definitely. I said East Coast. I was definitely disappointed. What's happening? They're getting right. Derrame. I'm really happy. Easy wanted to be a manager. He just wanted to manage the groups. He didn't want to rap. And New York was so hot and LA was so cold. He was like, man, I want a New York group. So he found these dudes out of New York called Homeboy's Only HBO. Oh, I think I remember them. And he said, he was like, yo, write it. Q, write one of them hoodwrap for these dudes. So I did it. Right. But when it wasn't rolling in the six four, wasn't really rolling. I'm not what you're on to. I wrote a third period. So I wrote it and gave it to him. And they was like, man, this, what are you talking about? Gankin. Six four. Slang was all. Yeah, Jack, we don't know what you're talking about, man. This ain't got none to do with where we from. So I think it was just the fact that the rhymes were so LA. They just was like, no. And you asked easy, you say easy. Oh, the Drake. Drake's. Wow. Toe easy, man, what you doing? We got the studio time. We pay for it once you try it. Because Drake was producing all kinds of records, man. And he was producing, you know, he was moonlighting basically, just producing these side records. So, you know, he was used to working with guys who, you know, dudes is paying any money. DJs from radio stations, it was like, yo, I got this creative rap. I want you to do the beat. So, you know, Drake was like that, you know, just trying to, trying to get on, trying to get money. And so it was like easy. I can coach you up, you know, what you do it. Now in the movie, it was like you were like the only business savvy person. Like you knew, you knew to ask for like certain things. And all the other artists, they were kind of, I mean, according to the movie, it kind of seemed like they were cool with going on to all getting some checks. And it's what was some weed. And they were, but you had the foresight to say, I know that I'm old, something. How did you develop that business mind sense? I mean, you know, they ain't like I'm from a different planet. You know, it's each one teach one. You know, I had a publicist. The publicist for NWA was a lady named Pascha, Renee. And if y'all, if y'all know Friday, y'all know y'all see the name Pascha, Renee, all the way there. But she ended up becoming my manager. But before she was my manager, she was like, soon she saw Jerry Heller. She was like, do y'all know this guy? Do you know who this dude is? And I'm like, nope, who is he? It's like easy brought around. So she would give me the game on like, did y'all sign a contract with him? No, because she knew his history. And he was known for being a bad guy. I mean, she knew his history. I know what he's known for. She was like, yo, so she starts saying. Did he get you kind of, you know, just kind of giving me the game. So I was like, you know, just a dude I didn't need to watch him. You know, because if she, I don't even really know her that good. And if she's saying to watch him, I don't know none of these people. So I'm watching everybody. And that's how I started to just notice things wasn't happening. You know, because I was young too, we all young. We happy to just be doing a record. We happy to be on tour. We happy to just be part of hip hop and not just locals no more. So, you know, I would listen to that lady, you know what I mean? And she was giving me a lot of good game. And I was using it. And I was helping them too, you know, in the movie, don't show that I go to ring and say, look, man, don't sign that. You know, I got a lot of them. So they already knew. They already knew something. Yeah, they knew where I was coming from. And you know, they clung me when I didn't sign that contract, man. And it really was 70,000. It was 75G 75G. Is there any reason you all didn't portray? Hold on, hold on. Hold on. And I want you to go there. But do you know 75,000 back then was like 700,000? Yeah, yeah. So how did you walk away? And then I go right back to your question, I'm sorry. But how did like every young black care from the ghetto able to took that 75? Yeah. And then you want to do that. I knew they owe me more. More. I knew they owe me more. So I knew if I took that, then I was accepting that that I wasn't paid more, that this was cool. And I was like, this ain't cool. Shit, they gave me 5,000 dollars. I was happy. I would have been 75,000. Hey, man, you know, it's like, dude, you know, when you ain't never had nothing. And you start getting, getting a little, you start saying people get a lot. And you start saying, hold on, man, I'm putting in more work than anybody or, you know, most of the people around, you know, just threw a parade flag. And when I'm from, it's like, if you know somebody beating you and you accept it, you just abit, period. Period. Yeah, no. So I was asking about Arabian princes. Any reason why he wasn't portrayed in the film? You know, it's really like in a movie, you only have so much real estate. And you know, he got out the group. As soon as he saw Jerry, he was like, I'm out. I'm even the original. Yeah, he was out. He quit the day after we shot that cover. He quit the day after we shot that great. He quit. Wow. He went and talked to, he knew about Jerry, because he had done records with McCullough. He knew Jerry was sitting there and wait for artists. He was like, easy. What's up, man? And what are you signing with this dude? And I think, you know, easy was like, he's a dope dealer that's making records. And this dude is like, yeah, I'm going to take you off that level and turn into some of the jazz stuff. And he did get us, you know, he did get doors open and he did get us a deal. Time out, Jerry. Jerry, right. You know, because the major is what I'm giving us no deal. Right. It was like, nah, we, this is too crazy. So, you know, he did his thing in business by easy, but he didn't do it by us. And then we find out that, you know, he was even still it from easy. So, there was just, you know, I don't want to talk about the dead, but God bless. Yeah, whatever. Yeah. Wow. He got it. At least he was a part of getting y'all out though. Yeah. And have y'all probably, you know. That's why in the movie, you know, if you really look at it, you know, he was, we didn't, we didn't land pulling like we, like I wanted to. You wanted to. We, you know, we, we did our A-Buy. Now you worked with arguably everybody's top five producer of all times. Was Dr. Drake always special? Yes. Or that was something that it was developed in time. He was always special. You know, the first DJ and then doing mixed tapes, it was the OG mixed tapes. Not the new mixed tapes. What they just got somebody beat and you wrap over it. A mixed tape back then was mixing, actually mixing, mixing, mixing, and blending. That's what I was going to say. You know, that's the high. That's what makes it nice to mix. Yeah, that's the real mix. Yeah. Yeah. Mix the records, you know, he was, he was hot. He was always nice, you know, making beats. It's just his, you know, his, his ear. He just hears stuff different, you know, I'm saying that. And he's tedious. He liked it. He won't let you out that booth till you get it right. Yeah. Some dudes can't handle it. Right. I mean, I heard he chastised me. Some dudes, you know, they used to go in there and just spit. Right. No. No. But that's how I know you was a 100% real artist. I remember we did push and wait. The remix. And you said, Norrie has to come to the studio. And you actually wanted to come in to the studio and see me right my rhyme. Like that, like you wanted you, like to me, that's real because when you do a record with somebody, you should share a world. Of course. And I just knew 100%. I said, this guy is 100% authentic because of that because I knew you could have, you could have sent me the record wherever I was at. And I could have did it. You was like, I'm a being a studio with him. And I always knew you 100% real artists for that. Well, that's what it's all about, man. You know, we're going to do a record together. I don't want to send it over to, you know, we got to be, we got to buy, you know, or we shouldn't do a record together. We smoked Halloween that day too. Let's mix it up. We have some fly shit to say, we're just right now, we're going to chill because we don't want smoking bills and shit like that. But, you know, so now you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you Friday. Yeah. What makes you say, let me continue this franchise and go and do Friday part two because now Friday part two, Chris Tucker is not a part of this. Yeah. So what made you still want to say, I'm going to, I'm going to continue to do that. What I didn't want to know. What? I was like, what? No Chris. Man, what is this movie? You know, it's like, you know, it's like you lose in a major piece. Like, Shaq and Kobe breaking up. I mean, it's like, how can, how could y'all win championships? But then I started thinking like, you know, this movie is not about two people. It's about a day. It's about understanding your environment and having a little fun laughing at it. So I'm like, yo, it makes sense if we are going to continue this for Craig, maybe to go off the block. Branson, all the characters you know, we're going to introduce you to. I had no idea that was a real place. We going, we going to be in a new place. We're having new cast the characters. And then I started singing it like, yo, when I saw Mike Gaps do stand up, I'm like, we have Mike. That's Craig cousin. Wow. That's Craig cousin right here. So I was like, yo, we can, we can keep this thing going, you know, and just have my cousin instead of my friend and just clown about being away from the hood. I'll be honest because Chris Tucker destroyed that. Did you did you think Mike abs because now Mike abs is a no name like at this time. Yeah. I don't remember being in the movie theater and people being like when they saw that it wasn't a day day. They sort of wasn't smoking. Excuse me. When they saw it, it wasn't smoking. Like people were actually were booing at first. When they think that it was and in the transition to be like, but did you know that he can hold it down or did you have doubts? I mean, I know he can hold it down. Okay. I know that we can make because Friday is about, it's about a field. It's more than just one person, you know, housing the movie. It's a, it's his own thing in a way. So I just knew that the cast that we had and the story, of course, it was going to be a little bit. But I know once people got a chance to really feel Mike abs and see him that his comedy is mohue than smokies to me. And I just felt like people are going, you know, they love him. You can tell people love Mike abs because he's so real and raw with it. And then when we did part three, you know, bringing cat Williams in and bringing Terry Cruz. It just was a OG triple OG. It's just, it's just a franchise people love. And we want to do another one, but we got to do it right now. The rest of you know, going to hit you. And here is correct. There's going to be a last Friday with smoky and that's what we want. We still trying to get Chris to get a role in that. I know this is very bad. I'm just throwing myself in there. But I think I belong to you. Just throw me in there. I could be the garbage man. I could be, I be the guy that's going to be the garbage man. I could do whatever. I could do whatever. I could do whatever. I could do whatever. Because you know, I mean, I'm just such a fan of that. So it would be a last Friday with both of them. I hope so. That's good. I can't make Chris do it, but the fans can. What you doing with that? I'm like, yeah, yeah, you know, we're doing it. I think you got a right question over there too. You got to say, though, we're celebrating you tonight, I excuse you. I don't know if you know about what it is. You know, when people in this music business, they got more than 10 years. They try to kick us out. They try to say we owe, they try to say we washed up. But me, you, if and we are prime examples that you can do whatever you want to do as long as you want to do it and continue to have fun. So tonight we are celebrating ice cube. And his eluxurious career because I want to be the East Coast version of ice cube. That's why. Yeah. People want to be Jay Z and Paul Fennas and Snoop. And that's great. I love those guys. We ain't taking nothing from them. But I look, I feel like you still haven't fun doing what you're doing. I am, man. You know, it's like I got into this as a fan. You know, when I first started to just pay attention to hip hop, it was as a fan. And then to be able to do it, just to be able to rap, I felt like that was a compliment. But to get this far with my career, you know, it's just like I feel like, you know, God is smiling on me. What artist inspired you? Your penmanship is crazy. Oh, man, man, artists like Melly Mel, Chuck D. Carras one, IST, Big Daddy Kane, who get who don't get enough credit for being a lyricist. You know, these dudes were archized. One of them see is like the blueprint of how you do it. You know, so, you know, I'm a fan of that school of MCs. Now, fucked up police. Yeah. Did you know that 20 years later, people still want to be saying fucked up. Did you know the police was never going to get better? I was hoping. I mean, I was hoping that we get better, right? I was hoping people would still be rocking the song. The publishing. But it's a trick when we had like later lyrics, and I was so into making the song that Ryan looked over at me and was like, this one right here is going to start some shit. Right. So you all knew it. Yeah, he just got to just a sense like this one right here is going to start some shit. And every since he said that it just put it on my radar and it was so true. Because you know, that was before we released the record. After we released it, it was like, it was something, you know, that I still can't explain how. Because in the movie, electric that time, you guys was at the studio and they pulled you guys over in the studio. Yeah. Did that? I used to sweat us at that studio all the time. Wow. I was just one incident. Wow. Because it was like a Mexican food spot right down the street we would walk to and then Torch police was on our neck, you know, because they just wouldn't use the scene. Do it like us walking around. Yeah. Looking like gang reds. Yeah. But we in the studio right here doing our thing. So man, lot, lot way more than in the movie. It's just one time in the movie. Wow. But we got it, you know, doing that whole record. The least five, six incidents. Wow. Now on tour. Did it really happen like that when they said, they told you not to perform that record? Yeah. Was a TK that was on with us? Yeah. He was on the tour. A TK. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They don't perform as well. Yeah. They would, you know, we was coming after the Beastie boys had come around and everybody was like, man, this rap tour stuff is crazy, you know, getting two out of hand. Then Bobby Brown went around the country and just doing coke every day. Doing the most. A nasty sexy show you could do for R&B artists. Today was by the time in W.A. was time them venues, polis, everybody hotels were like, was ready. Like, no, I mean, we ain't having what y'all bring it. So before every show they would gather us up. Some, you know, fat ass polis would come with the ordinance of, you know, this was the, I don't know what that is. It's basically a sand. Whatever. These are laws you don't know about. Oh, that we pulling out our ass from 1876. If you do this, if you up scene on stage, boom, boom, boom, we can't arrest you. And not just in the Bible, though, this is it everywhere, everywhere. So we hear that man, we hear that every night. We get tired of this man. It's harassment because we see a rock and rollers and guns and roses. They don't what the hell they want to do. So we just was fed up and it just, it all came together and Detroit that night. And we just was like, man, we don't do it. And because we just like, man, ain't got cause no right. Cause they kept saying you do this song. So you can cause a right. You do this song. It's gonna cause a right. We like, come on, man, it's hip. I ain't gonna cause no damn right. And we did that song and it caused a damn right. It was crazy. We dropped down it the whole time. We dropped it the whole time. When I perform, I'm like, oh, you know, this is getting a lot of fun. Yeah, just kicked it off. Does, does Ice Cube consider himself the original, a one of the originators of Gangsta Rat? One of them. Yeah. You know, but you gotta, you gotta look at Ice Tea. Ice Tea. Ice Tea on the show. Who will big you up as well? Yeah, you're one of those best friends. Ice Tea, man, you know, he's the one who really said it was okay to put it on him and say, yo, you can say what you want to say, do what you want to do. And he's an architect too. Sure. So Ice Cube listening to young boys or? Every now and then, you know, my wife, my kids put me up on it. You know, and it's all good. Yeah, I was just curious. I was just curious. You know, what's your favorite song right now? Any song? Man, I ain't got no favorite. You got no favorite? I'm like, you're not a big shine. Okay. Now, you know, that's not a take-out. Yeah, I like that. So now that you cock it, the movie world, like you open the doors for people like me to live out my dream. We hearing that you're doing the, what is it? Big three? The big three. The big three. Yeah. Explain to us for those who that didn't know what the big three is. The big three is a professional three on three basketball played by retired NBA players. But I'm hearing it's a full court half court, half court, half court three on three. Okay. And you know, you know, when dudes play three on three, you get rough in there. So, so we don't have dudes going hard, but you coach, you ain't coaching at all. Oh, no. I don't think. Oh, okay. We're going to have pros and pros and aim for, you know, celebrity games. Because I heard you on the good day, you said you nice and basketball. Yeah, I ain't that nice. I'm asking. I'm asking. I'm asking. You going to play in the game? I'm like, oh, no. You say no joke. You're going to give me. Okay. No mountain doing amateur. No, no, no. I was talking to you. I was talking to you. All right. I was talking to you. I was talking to you. I was talking to you. I was talking to you. I was talking to you. I was talking to you. I was talking to you. I was talking to you. I was talking to you. I was talking to you. I was talking to you. I was talking to you. I was talking to you. I was talking to you. I was talking to you. I was talking to you. I was talking to you. I was talking to you. we want to see what they got. Oh, oh. They still got it. You know, I'm doing it. Yeah, we're going to throw it. You know, you got to have the game just not the name, you know. Right, right. So what is ice cube like more? You like movies or music more? I love them both, you know. But music is my, that's my baby, you know. That's what I could do with it. I want to do when it comes to music. It's no meetings, no committee, no, you know, bunch of people, you know, with a movie, you got a hundred people working on one project, you know. But with a record, not going to work on a hundred records. It's just one of me if I want to. So, you know, my records are more personal, I guess. Okay. You know, one of the illicit collaborations, I think that people who acknowledge or give it as much profit when you did America's most wanted with the bomb spot. Yeah. Because I remember back then there's no internet. I'm like, go to the mall and you go into the rap set. Go to the bar. Do you just go to the bar, producers? Yeah, it's public enemy. Right. You know what I mean? Right. I go, NWA is my favorite group at the time. Right. I choose my favorite artist in NWA. Public enemy's one of my favorite groups. I go in the store and you don't get internet, you don't get to be the young sena and I see America's most wanted, produced by the bomb squad. I nearly lost my mind. Yeah. Those was my favorite producers, you know. I worked with Drake, but my favorite producers was the bomb squad. I made a chuck on tour and when I left the group, I went up to Dev Jam to look for a producer by the name of Sam Sever, who I work with a third bass. Yeah. The third bass album was out. They had dope beats on it. So Leo, it was like, yo, I hook you up with Sam. And the nigga Sam never showed up to the meet. So I was like, I'm bouncing, I'm leaving and coming down the horse, Chuck D. Chuck was like, yo, what you doing here? I told him what was up. He was like, man, come to the studio. I'm doing a record tonight with Big Daddy Kane called Byron Hollywood Byron. You want to be on it? You want to be on it? Come to the studio that'll let people know you're solo. I'm just kidding. I'm there. Right. Early. You know, did that record? And I was just telling them and then Hank Shockley, Keith Shockley was in there. And I was saying, yo, you know, I'm leaving the group and I need to do my own album. I told him, I said, I told everybody I was coming out here to get production and they laughed at me. Right? Because that's what I heard that they was like, what in New York? She going to be wet. So when Hank heard that, that turned him on. He was like, what? They laughed. I said, yeah, they laughed. I don't think I can get a record done out here. He was like, man, we do the whole record if you want to. He got a lot of songs. A lot of songs were on that record. He did everything. Now, now, now, we, I can't tell me in my homies earlier was the bait and that when you left in the WA, that it was them who took a shot at you first. Yeah. It was not you. No. Okay. Because number one, I don't say nothing about an W.A. Right. Right. That's how I say it. They made the Benedict Arnold line. Yeah. That was what, and then you came back with no Vaseline. I hit them a little bit with 100 miles. I hit them a little bit on the hand of Jack and for beats. Right. Because I had a song called 100 miles and running. And so I just gave my little little jab just to see what they would do. Right. Then they kind of came out with a little more on that Niggas for life album. Right. And then I was like, man, I'm going in. No Vaseline. No, it's probably the Ellis Disrecords of all time. And you know what else is great to see is that see you and calm in the together. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's good, man. It's cool to, you got to be for somebody. It's better to squash it. You know what I mean? It's better to squash it. So it's cool. You know, we had a misunderstanding years, years ago. Yeah. Because I never knew what that started. It was just a misunderstanding. Yeah. You know, and it's cool that we got past it, grown me and style. Right. Now, did you ever get to see the two-pop movie? Nice in here. What was your relationship with pop? We was cool. You know, that was one of the homies. Right. You know, I just looked at it as I look at, you know, most of the guys that send the game, and I'm cool with, you know, just one of the homies that, you know, it's kind of spiraled out of control. Right. Yeah, definitely. It's CUBE doing another album. Of course. Ah, let's make it. Let's make it there now. It's a relationship. We got the name of the album. Everything's corrupt. Everything's corrupt. Yeah. And now, it's CUBE independent or... No more in the scope. Oh, in the scope. Wow, Jimmy Hoppings. Wow, that's the kind of like a 360. Even though, like, no, Jimmy was deaf for all. He didn't have none of the two in WWE. No, he hadn't done WWE. I don't even know if he was still at the end of the scope. Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We just signed a deal with him. Do you think that certificate gets us just due? I think that's one of the best albums in the period in hip hop. Well, you know, from fans from people like you, we're going to release the 25-year anniversary of that next month. And I got three new songs on that. So it's going to be cool to, you know, put that album back out. I'm going to put it back out. Wow. It should make a movie about some of vacation. Yeah, that's absolutely. Everybody say that. No, it's urgent that a movie called Vacation coming up with John Cena. It's called Vacation Friends and Vacation Friends. They still put it together. That's in the infant stage. But it's filmed already? No, no, we haven't shot it yet. Okay. Because the writers, Tim and Tom, were the writers. I actually met with them and they've spoken about the Vacation. Yeah, it's good. It's going so totally dope. Man, cute. Because I see your people with sickness and I see you got to go. Yeah. You know what I mean? But you know, this is hip hop. These people, they need to know. So what is next for cute though? Oh, you know, just, I got the hip hop squares coming out on the one. Yeah, all these squares, like how these squares with hip hoppers, you know. Oh, wow. And it's fun. Who's hosting that? D-Ray. Okay. I think he gets sick. I'm here. I got to get the man to come out. I'm out of come doing this. I'm going to come out. Yeah, come on. You got to come out. First of all, cute. Listen, I'm going to be honest. We're in an industry that is full of fake people. So when I meet a real brother like you, when I sat down and we vibe that day, it's nothing more than I want to do is always just give you a person like you respect and continue because you know why? The older we get, the better we get in the more that we should know that we should big up each other. And it's not just black people, but it's hip hop because we're a part of a fraternity. It's bigger. It transcends race. It's bigger than just me. I was just being black and let's just I'm being Puerto Rican and you being Cuban. It's bigger than that. We're all part of a hip hop fraternity. And if we don't continue to big each other up, there won't be nobody else. And you're a person that we got to continue to big up. You're continuously doing great work. I sat there and I watched that movie in awe. Like I was just like wow, this was funny from the beginning. And like how do you always get the tough guy roles? Do you request the tough guy roles? They just come to you. I mean they come to me. People feel like when you're doing movie you want, you got characters and you got it like yo, I see this person as that. I see that you don't always get who you see, but people put you in the category and start casting you on that level. That's so dope. I know what else I got a big up before you leave the head. You know, I went to DJ drama studio because I had an interview real quick and you did and I just watched it. I was trying to hide and just people and I seen she rolling the limo. Let's mix up noise with the limo. That is some real, real niggas shit. Like you stuck with the limo. I got that. You got to jump in the no issue. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I really appreciate it. I really appreciate it. I really said that and you know, listen, we really appreciate as you being both for both of our favorite rappers and you know, what you transition to is a great example for young hip hop is period that it doesn't stop with hip hop. No. You know what I'm saying? Like you look at what is it? Kenny Smith and Charles Barclay. They all set up a platform that after hip hop, they can do something. But if it wasn't for you, you started it first with Friday and that we could actually still be relevant, still be out here, still do our thing. You really got to change. No. And you're a Godfather of that. We got to make some noise for that. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I appreciate it. This is an I Heart Podcast. Guaranteed Human.
