Summary

Miller and Moulton discuss college football's evolving landscape ahead of a White House meeting on athletics, analyze the Anthony Richardson quarterback trade debate for the Miami Dolphins, and cover major media industry shifts including Paramount's acquisition of Time Warner and its implications for NFL broadcasting rights.

Insights
  • Kirby Smart and Ryan Day are identified as the current voices of college football who best understand modern recruiting, portal transfers, and player compensation dynamics
  • The NFL's upcoming television contract renegotiation could reshape the entire media landscape, with potential financial implications that may threaten traditional broadcast networks
  • Anthony Richardson's trade value remains minimal despite high draft pedigree due to persistent injury concerns and lack of game experience, making him a speculative flyer at best
  • Media consolidation through Paramount's Time Warner acquisition could concentrate sports broadcasting power, affecting how college football, NHL, and other sports are distributed
  • Linear television networks face existential risk if they lose NFL broadcasting rights, as sports content is now the primary driver keeping traditional TV alive

you're listening to Miller and Moulton coming at you from the floor Meister studios floor Meisters keeping it real and now here's Mark Miller and David Moulton it is the diamond district bonus hour on this Friday even though it wasn't and isn't a football Friday we have talked a lot of football, NFL and college between the combine in Indianapolis and a whole bunch of stories coming out of there. And at the very least, two big college football stories, one that the president's going to get involved in a week from today. Remember, was it last Sunday? Was it two Sundays ago? He had the round of golf over at Mar-a-Lago with Governor DeSantis and Nick Saban and Urban Meyer. and I'm guessing this came up. So, all right, they're going to discuss college athletics. A week from today at the White House, 35 people received invitations, no active head coaches, several current athletic directors, and a few current university presidents. The former coaches that we know of right now that were invited were Nick, Urban, and Mack Brown. By the way, how many active coaches have won natties? Because there's three former coaches who have won natties. I mean, you got Signetti. You know, you got Ryan Day. You got Kirby. Who are we missing? Dabo. Dabo. I think that's it. You know, Jimbo's not in coaching anymore. I mean, Gene Chizik's not in coaching. I mean, I'm going back to the mid-2000s right now. So we've got Dabo, Kirby, Insignetti, and Ryan Day. Who do you think is the voice of college football then? Because, you know, for 10-plus years, it was Nick. I mean, when Nick spoke. I think out of that list, I think Kirby. um dabo hasn't changed with the times he doesn't like the transferring he kind of yells about everything right now kirby to me you know signetti's a new guy on the block what he's it's i've said it before it's the greatest hire in the history of college sports it is but kirby to me is the guy who's done it the old way is doing it the new way deals with the portal deals with recruiting. I mean, I don't think anybody, I mean, Signetti's the best coach, but I think Kirby is doing it as well as anyone on all fronts. Okay. All right. It was interesting to hear some NFL people at the Combine, which is totally unrelated to college football, but the NFL people are like, yeah, of all the coaches today, we love to talk to Georgia players and we love to go to a Georgia practice. Just love it. It's so old school. And that they just rave about him at practice and, you know, that the players respect him and he can go at them hard, but it's okay. And I thought it was interesting. I did think it was funny. I got sent a text on the Pelican Roofing of Florida text line. It was a YouTube short from a podcast. And they were talking about what we talked about briefly yesterday, two more Georgia players getting in trouble for reckless driving. Right. Do you know that Georgia, outside of quarterback, can fill both sides of the ball with starters of just players who have had problems with reckless driving? I saw that. 21 of 22 positions. They're just missing a quarterback, which is a good thing. But I found that to be pretty funny. So, yeah, you know, but I look at I just Kirby's put guys in the league. Kirby's getting guys paid. Kirby's had to make decisions on guys. And he's made mistakes on guys to keep or not keep. Yep. Sure. And he's one of the highest level. You know, people are suggesting the only other coach I would, you know, I think Lane is there, but Lane's a hired gun. You know, Lane is just like the players. He leaves for the most money. Yeah, I think Ryan Day is actually second to Kirby. And I know people don't respect him. but if you look at the job he's done, he consistently wins. He consistently contends, particularly in the 2020s. I, you know, don't know what the problem is. Can't win every year, man. You just can't. Can't win every year, especially when you're getting outspent, which hardly ever happened before. But, you know, the thought is right now, Texas, LSU, Indiana, Texas Tech could all be outspending Ohio State this coming season. Interesting. So, yeah, I think you're on to something with Ryan Day. I think you mean, and they obviously get how the games played at Ohio State because they spend a ton of money. Sure. Yeah. I think Georgia and Ohio State right now are, to me, the two leaders. And there's a bunch of – I'm not saying best coaches. We're not arguing about who's the best coach. We're talking about who could go in that room and best explain, from a current coach's standpoint, what's going on. And have, I think, have a little bit of the side of the player there too. does a coach have to win a natty before he joins the list? You know, like Marcus Freeman at Notre Dame. Do you put him on the list or do you go, no, win the final game? It's not that to me. It's that Notre Dame still plays under kind of a different set of rules. Notre Dame only brings in transfers that are grad transfers. So I don't think Notre Dame is the normal school. Right. When it comes to the current way, they're recruiting players, they are getting transfer players, but they're 99 out of 100, they're grad transfers. So that's not the same as what everybody else is doing. Right. You know, I would not put Sarkeesian on the list. Sorry. Wouldn't do it. So just curious. We probably should have put this out there as a poll question, and I'm not saying we should do it now. It's too late in the show. But if you're a Dolphin, and let's just say, listen, they're not going to do the move if financially it's going to hurt them compared to whatever the financial move they're going to make now with Tua. But let's just say that they can trade Tua to the Colts for Anthony Richardson, and when we do the money that the Dolphins hit is the same as it would have been if they unloaded Tua and took, you know, 58 million in damages this year and 38 or whatever it would be next year. if you're a Dolphin, do you want Anthony Richardson? Do you want to take a flyer on him? Bring him in. I actually think, Mark, if you're the Dolphins and you're willing to financially make the trade what I just described, I actually think you can get Anthony Richardson in a draft pick. No, it'd be a sixth or seventh rounder, but you can't argue that they have equal value. Do you think you can get Richardson for a sixth or seventh? I think I can get Richardson and a pick if I'm sending the Colts to a... Okay, interesting. No, I think someone will give up at least a fifth for Anthony Richardson. I'll be curious if somebody goes fourth. But I think somebody might give up a fifth, particularly if they have a bunch of them, and take a flyer. But, you know, I'm wondering whether you get the sixth or seventh round pick or not. If financially it's a wash, would you trade Tua to the Colts for Anthony Richardson? or if there a trade on the table where you can trade to and get a fifth round pick with the finances being the same would you take the fifth round pick Now, you know I wouldn't. I don't think you would either. Maybe you would. I don't think Richardson can play. I didn't think it when he came out of college. I don't think it now. He can't play more than five games in a season. The guy has never been healthy. He wasn't healthy at Florida. He wasn't healthy at Indianapolis. he's not even started enough games for me to be able to consider as a quarterback of the future. I don't believe in him. But I understand that some people might. I wouldn't do it if I was Miami. If they do it, as Pat Kerwin said on the show earlier, you've got a new regime in. What did they think of him in Green Bay during the draft? And I'll say it again. Both the GM and the head coach came from Green Bay. what did that organization do two years ago early in a season? They gave up a seventh-round pick to Tennessee for Malik Willis. Did anybody think Malik Willis could play when Green Bay acquired him? And I mean anybody. No. No, he played in a couple games for Tennessee and looked just horrific. Didn't look like he had a clue as to what he's doing. No, he was a starter one year, lost his gig, and no, looked clueless. If I were the Dolphins, I'd acquire them. No, finance is the same. I'm not giving up any assets. Okay, but yeah, I'll take a flyer on him, sure. I mean, he shouldn't have been drafted where he was drafted. We all know that. I don't even know if he should have been drafted in the second round. But if he got taken in the third round that year, I don't think Miller and Moulton would have knocked the pick. So, it's a top 100 pick in a draft from three years ago. And the only other guy I got on my roster was taken in the seventh round. I don't know. Now, this is where, and David, again, I wouldn't do it, but Miami's got all those third-round picks. Would they send one of those for Richardson? No. They better not. he's not worth any capital at all no what about their fourth that's like pick 111 no I wouldn't give up a sixth for him I'm trading you Tua I'm making your quarterback room significantly better if they don't want Tua and you're just going to cut him they don't want Tua they're not interested now what well then guess what The Colts are probably going to cut Richardson at some point. I mean, I think so. I think they're going to cut him at some point. Okay. But you're saying it's only Miami. Like, I think from what I'm seeing, Minnesota might be interested. There's other teams that might be interested. No, I just framed it from the Dolphins' point of view. I've got you. Right. But you said cut's a possibility. I think someone else could trade for him. And if you're Miami, you've got to consider that. Okay. Miller and Moulton. MillerandMoulton.com. Welcome back to Miller and Moulton. Text the guys what's in your mind at 21,000. That's 21000. And now, here's David Moulton. 21 minutes past the hour. Good, bad, and ugly, what's on tap? Today was the day when. Some final thoughts. Picker two. coming up in a little more than 15 minutes time. We haven't talked about this at all. I don't mean today or yesterday. I mean, going back weeks when this story first emerged. So, you know, Time Warner is putting everything up for sale. Right. And initially, they accepted the bid from Netflix. And then Paramount put the hostile takeover in, right? Right. Paramount said, what are you doing? We're offering more. What the heck? And they were like, don't know what to tell you. We want to sell with them. And so, you know, Paramount put on the full court press and apparently had some political connections behind them. I guess there's like 15 state attorney generals who petitioned Washington and said, yeah, this Netflix Time Warner thing, this could create real problems. Okay. Okay, let's just say now Paramount slash CBS is going to purchase Time Warner. Can we talk about the sports that are on Time Warner? College football, they buy a number of college football. They have the NHL, they're the number two partner. Okay, they are, ESPN has sold them the last two years some college football playoff games. Uh-huh. But also. Do they still have baseball, right? Turner? I don't know if they still have a bit of baseball or not. Is that done now? No, I think they do in the New Deal. I know ESPN is out except for like Wednesday night baseball. Right. But here's the other thing. And, you know, obviously it's an obscene amount of money. None of us can relate. And who knows if they start making money right away or what have you. But eventually people think, oh, my goodness, this could be the biggest media behemoth out there. well what's the nfl wanting to do mark in the next two three at most five years two three um they want to well add a game so that they can rip up all their television contracts and renegotiate their deals right and it ain't gonna be five i know you put two three five but i think you and i both think it's sooner rather than later i do i'm curious how long the players are going to hold out. As of right now, they're like the Major League Baseball players, no interest in the salary cap, don't bring it up. No need to even talk. Okay. We'll see. But the thought is that no one's going to have more money at the table. No one than them. What can't they purchase? What can't they purchase in every other sport. You've got to go back a long time. When the Islanders won their first cup, they won it on CBS. CBS literally came in and bought game six, hired St. Louis Blues legendary announcer Dan Kelly to do the game, and CBS aired that game. I think it's the last time they've aired an NHL game, playoffs or regular season, 1980, May. But, I mean, think of what they could bid for if they have more money than everybody else. And reportedly, the league's mad at NBC, and some financial company just came out earlier this week and said, you know who's in trouble when the NFL opens up their TV deal? Fox. They don't have enough money. Now, that's not what Fox has said. And Fox has said, basically, we'll quit running everything else. We'll drop every other sport we have to keep running the NFL. But wouldn't it be ironic if what made Fox a network was the NFL and what put it out of business 35 years later was the NFL? It is, you know, and I think it might have been the same report, David, but it basically said that an article that I read in the last week or so is that the only thing keeping linear network television alive is the NFL. It's the only thing. All right. So alive. And aren't you losing your mind a little bit if you're, you know, a local affiliate as to what the future holds of your company if you own the CBS or NBC or Fox station in whatever market? And that disappears? Yeah. Hey, I worked for a CBS affiliate in the early 90s. All right. And trust me, I was just getting fired as they were about to lose the NFL. But it hurt CBS affiliates all over the country all over the country They tried to replace it with baseball and some other stuff And that how Sean McManus got the job And he was given one instruction, get the NFL back, do whatever you have to do. And remember the famous story, there's many of them, in which in college basketball, you're recruiting a kid and you literally have an assistant coach who follows them around every day for a year. Apparently, Sean McManus made contact with Paul Tagliabue and Roger Goodell in the NFL every day for 18 months. So. If you're you know, if you're right now and the idea of losing the NFL comes. they don't you know people aren't watching sitcoms or dramas they're just not and as we pointed out for years those are all really expensive to produce and they're not getting the return now now sports is very expensive and i don't know if there's a network making money on the nfl But if you lose 300 affiliates without it, do the math. Because the affiliates pay money. So we'll see. I mean, you know, it has nothing to do with sports, but there, you know, also with this whole Paramount, there are other channels that are owned by Time Warner, and people wonder what the future is of some of these channels. Yeah, I can tell you. They're going to go away. Yeah, unless they're making money, they're going to go away. And these are channels we've been watching for 30 years. Yeah, absolutely. One other sports business note. Did you see, you know, the Padres are for sale. There's a few teams that are for sale. Seahawks are for sale. San Diego Padres are for sale. Drew Brees is part of an ownership group. to try to purchase San Diego Padres. Yeah. A lot of people forget. First five years of his career was in San Diego. Hey, if I could afford it, I'd live there. It's a great city. It's not cheap. No. And I'm curious how much he has to kick in. You know, my guess is the Padres are high ones. if the Rays went for 1-7, I believe it was. I've got to believe the Padres are right around 2. I would think because they've got a new stadium. Their stadium is in good shape. They're fine. And they sell it out. So at $40,000 plus every game. But 10% ownership of the Padres is $200 million. Hmm. Drew's got that kind of money lying around? I was going to say, no wonder he got back into broadcasting with Fox. Yeah. So just wanted to mention a couple sports business things before we finish things up with the good, bad, and ugly, what's on tap, and today was the day when. Make sure you listen, youtube.com slash Miller & Moulton. Welcome back to Miller & Moulton. Text the guys what's in your mind at 21000. That's 21000. And now, here's David Moulton. Last segment of the week. Miller and Moulton, millermoulton.com, Miller underscore Moulton on X. In southwest Florida, there will be some changes next week. They may actually go into effect later today on the station. and our show will still be four hours, but it will only broadcast three hours in the 239 right now. We're working on getting the fourth hour broadcast, but the four hours will be broadcast in their entirety in Tampa, St. Pete, and in Jacksonville, and there will be a way for everybody to listen to our fourth hour via apps at the worst-case scenario. It's that time again, nearing the end, but not quite there yet. Here's Mark Miller with Today Was The Day When. We start today in 1827. The first Mardi Gras in New Orleans was today in 1827. 1860, Lincoln makes a speech at Cooper Union in New York City. It is largely responsible for his election to the presidency. Today in 1901, the National League Rules Committee decrees that all fouls are to count as strikes except after two strikes. This one I love too, David. First off, I didn't know the one about the strikes or fouls that I guess before 1901, they didn't count as strikes. But it was today in 1908 that the Sacrifice Fly was adopted. It was then repealed in 1931 and reinstated in 1954. Bob Cousy set a then NBA record with 28 assists for the Celtics today in 1959. They would score 173 points against the Minneapolis Lakers. Wow. Right. Today in 1960, the first gold, we didn't get it yet, but the U.S. Olympic team beat the Soviets 3-2 en route to their gold medal at Squaw Valley. Richard Petty comes from two laps down to win the event after 198 laps were completed because of rain in 1966 in the 8th Daytona 500. Today in 68. I was just going to say, when I covered NASCAR for local TV stations in the early 90s, no, it was late 80s. We're at Pocono and Tim Richmond went two laps down. And I did a stand up in his pit that said he went two laps down and he was never heard from again. And on the Christmas reel, they put the footage of him celebrating in Victory Lane right after that. Today in 68. Those of you old enough to remember would remember Walter Cronkite gave his editorial on the CBS News talking about America's chances in the Vietnam War. Today in 71, Janis Joplin's Pearl hits number one in the U.S. It would stay there for nine weeks. Joplin died three months before the album was released. people magazine hit the newsstands for the first time today in 1974 while it's a good song the parody was much better on SNL but it was today in 1981 that McCartney and Stevie Wonder record Ebony and Ivory if you don't think the parody is better just go look up Eddie Murphy Joe Piscopo Ebony and Ivory from SNL it is fantastic and today in 2005, Jamie Foxx won a Best Actor Award for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the movie Ray. Great movie, by the way. Great movie. I love my music biopics. Constantine the Great, Big in Christianity. Look it up. Gene Sarenson, John Steinbeck, Johnny Pesky, and Elizabeth Taylor would have all celebrated birthdays today. joanne woodward is 96 years old today journey guitarist neil sean who also played with santana at i believe the age of 17 he's 72 james worthy is 65 kent the sormo you made me a lot of money sir he's 56 deuce staley 51 tony gonzalez is 50 and singer josh groban is 45 what did i miss david I just have one. Today in 1980, a Grammy was awarded for the first and last time for best disco recording. Now, remember, six months earlier, you had had the riot in between games of the doubleheader at Comiskey Park about how bad disco sucked. But the Grammys had already decided that they were going to award a Grammy. And Mark, I Will Survive wins the first and last Grammy for Best Disco Recording. Time to see life a little bit differently. Here's Mark Miller with the good, the bad, and the ugly. What you got, Mark? We go to Vegas via Jensen Beach in Florida where back in 2021 Maggie Kennedy was dubbed the world oldest competitive pool player She was 94. At 98, she's heading back to Vegas. Her team's Sunday fun day at the BCA National Pool Tournament in Las Vegas. 98 years old she's still playing pool for money. Talk about how badly you would feel about yourself if you got hustled by a nearly 100 year old woman in the pool. It's one thing to get beat by the old guy in the pool. You know, the guy that's our age. If some young kid wants to play the 60 year old, he might be making a mistake. But some great grandmother beat you in a little game of pool? Oh, could you live with yourself after? I love it. For the bad, we go to Englewood, always up to no good, but this is Englewood, Florida, where Charlotte County deputies are investigating over a dozen burglaries with homes with hurricane shutters have been targets for thieves because the thieves know that no one is home. an informant identified shila robinette and another man as burglars robinette is accused of stealing over nine thousand dollars worth of jewelry from a home and attempting to sell glass fish figurines stolen from another home didn't know there was a market for glass fish figurines and finally the ugly we go to fort myers where a fort myers woman was arrested earlier this week accused of stealing gold dentures and fight tickets from a car. Deputies responded to a scene at a Fort Myers boxing gym after reports of burglary. The victim reported while training in the gym he got into an argument with 22-year-old Catherine Rivera. Later in the day the victim returned to his car and discovered that his gold dentures were missing as well as 13 tickets for a bare knuckle fighting championship. The victim spoke with Rivera, who confirmed she stole the tickets and would only return them if he returned her belongings. Deputies made contact with Rivera, who was cooperative and returned the gold dentures, as well as a gold ring that belonged to the victim. She was arrested and faces charge of burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, I guess, and grand theft. That is the good, the bad, and the ugly on today, February the 27th, and it's brought to you by the Cape Coral Police Department, offering great pay for new officers, a signing bonus, overtime opportunities available, plus other jobs. For information on all jobs, go to capecops.com. That's capecops.com. Well, they're all big for the Florida Panthers. I mean, I don't know if they have to go on a lightning-like run. Tampa's 19-2-1 in their last 22. But the Panthers have 24 games left. They are eight games out of the playoffs. There's like a half a dozen teams ahead of them. One of them was nine points ahead of them. And visits them tonight, the Sabres and Panthers at sunrise, 7 o'clock, drop the puck around 7-10. college hoops tonight. Two good ones. It's a light night of college basketball, but two good ones. First off, can Miami of Ohio remain unbeaten? They're going to Western Michigan, Mark, who's 10 and 18. Yep. But they're 10 and 18. Six o'clock on CBS Sports Network. My kind of game. I know. They're 11 and a half point favorites, so it's a system play as well. Can they get to 29-0? And then 8 o'clock on Big Fox, Michigan, Illinois, battle of top ten teams, and Michigan barely favored in Champaign. Just a point and a half. By the way, tomorrow, a bunch of ranked matchups. Virginia at Duke, Texas Tech at Iowa State, Kansas at Arizona, Alabama at Tennessee, and Arkansas visits Florida. The Gators an eight-and-a-half-point favorite at home against the Hogs. Vanderbilt at Kentucky for the Kentucky fans out there. It's not both ranked, but Vandy's in the top 25. ESPN doubleheader tonight, NBA. 7 o'clock, Mark. You might have some interest in this. Cavs at Pistons. Probably no Harden, but yes, I do have a little interest. And then at 930, Denver at OKC. SGA, I think, back tonight? Yep, and they're eight-and-a-half-point favorites. But remember, they played in a series last year. It went seven. So two good ones tonight. Cavs, Pistons, Nuggets, OKC. I mean, hell, it could be conference final matchups, certainly conference semis, tonight on the four-letter network. Buffalo, you mentioned playing at Florida tonight. They're at Tampa tomorrow night, and Buffalo trying to catch the Lightning. But I think a big weekend for the Sabres. If they're going to be a playoff team, but they've got to get one of these two, and tonight would be the one you'd pick out. I mean, Buffalo and Detroit, you worry about them falling apart. They've done really solid so far this year. Can they get to the finish line and get in the playoffs? Trade deadlines next week. and there are teams who haven't made the playoffs in a long time who historically, when you're a general manager of a team like that in hockey, you go out and you acquire veteran players who have been in the playoffs often. So we'll see if Buffalo, Detroit, and a few others do it. You know, will Pittsburgh, who has given up assets more than acquiring them, but the Penguins do want to make the playoffs and they're without Sid for a month. Will Pittsburgh actually make an acquisition at the deadline to make sure that Crosby's coming back to play in the playoffs? So, yeah, there are only five points clear of Washington and Washington right now wouldn't be in the playoffs as a wild card. So, you know, and the blue jackets who have played really well since what the, the coach came on. Right. Yeah. bonus i believe yeah so i mean you would you would think if you're pittsburgh you need to make a move and there are players there that are coming up on contracts that you can go acquire to help with scoring i mean they're you know the nhl loves the trade deadline don't kid yourself they kind of tell the nba hold my beer most years when it comes to the trade deadline so gms in that league are not afraid to make moves. Pat Kerwin's at the Combine. He'll have all her scouting done, and he will join us on Tuesday to go through position groups as only our biggest goober, Pat Kerwin, can. Yeah, what did he say? Lineman today, offensive lineman he's looking at today and tomorrow. Right. So he'll get the big uglies for us, likes the center crop. Really likes the defensive players, linebackers and edge rushers. Talking about a really solid group there for this draft. It's probably going to be a little more boring on draft day. It's going to be linemen. It's going to be defensive linemen. It's going to be linebackers. It's not going to be a lot of receivers. Maybe two or three they're talking about in the first round. One tight end, one quarterback. Maybe two if someone thinks highly enough of the Alabama quarterback. but it's not going to have that sexiness to it of quarterbacks going early in the draft. You know, one running back, one tight end, one quarterback. That's really what's expected in the first round. Maybe three receivers, maybe two. The rest are going to be defensive players and linemen. And by linemen, we mean tackles because guards usually don't get taken in the first round. Maybe one. I do think the Florida center is going in the first round. I know Pat talked about could he slide to the second. I don't think he will. I think somebody grabs him in the mid to high 20s. Miller and Moult, enjoy your weekend.
