Summary

The hosts rewatch the Bluey episode 'Markets' three years after their initial review, discussing how the episode teaches children about wise spending decisions and the concept of 'what goes around comes around.' The episode follows Bluey at a farmer's market with $5 from the Tooth Fairy, exploring themes of friendship, dietary restrictions, and the consequences of impulsive purchases.

Insights
  • Children struggle with impulse spending when they have limited money and see many appealing options; parents should provide guidance on financial decision-making rather than letting kids spend freely
  • True friendship is demonstrated through sacrifice and consideration for others' needs, as shown when Bluey refuses the pony ride because her friend cannot join her
  • Money circulates through communities in unexpected ways; Bluey's $5 eventually returns to her with its special sticker, enabling her to support a street musician
  • Dietary restrictions require careful navigation in social settings, and children can demonstrate maturity by respecting parental boundaries without resentment
  • Regret over purchases is a natural learning experience for children; Bluey's dissatisfaction with the toffee apple teaches the value of thoughtful spending

Thank you guys so much. Speaking of things that are awesome, we just got done re-watching Markets. He came. He's very kind. Henry, could you tell us what was going on at the beginning of this episode? At the beginning of the episode, we see Bluey living up her pillow, and she gets $5 out from under it. That was given to her by the Tooth Fairy. She goes right into the kitchen yelling, I got $5 from the Tooth Fairy. $5! Yeah, I know. $5! $5! That's what she left all Bluey's friends. Well, that Tooth Fairy's doing well for herself, isn't she? Chilly mentioned that Bluey could probably spend that money at the markets. Bluey sure was excited. I remember how excited these two kids were when they lost their first Tooth. It was a whole thing around here. It was. They were so excited to wake up and find that money under their pillow. They're off to the markets. Stella, what is Bandit playing with Bingo? He's doing this little piggy game thing. Yeah, Bingo thought that was peak comedy. She was sure having fun with it. What did Bluey notice, Stella, about her money? She noticed that the Tooth Fairy put a special sticker on it. She doesn't have any idea what to spend that on. And when they get to the market, we see Indy with her mom at their booth. And Bluey asked Indy to go with her to help her. Stella, what was the first thing they saw? They saw these giant bubbles and Bluey and Indy were having a lot of fun popping them. Bluey thought that she might want to buy one of those, but she ended up deciding not to. Yeah, that's tough. You see something cool right away and you want to spend your money right then. But there's a whole market to look at before you decide. And I think she made a good decision. Amanda, where did they go next? Bluey and Indy saw a lady that had a couple of ponies and she was selling pony rides. So the girls went over and they asked her what the ponies' names were. One of them was biscuits and the other one was buttermilk. Bluey decided she wanted to buy a ride on buttermilk. And the lady took her money and she set her up on buttermilk. And Bluey scooted back so she could make room for Indy. But the lady said, oh no, no, no, only one person can ride. And Indy, you could tell she was sad, but she said, oh, it's okay, Bluey. I'll just catch up with you later. And Bluey decided that she did not want to ride the pony if Indy couldn't ride with her. So the pony lady was nice enough to get Bluey down from the pony and she gave her her $5 back. And she commented on what a good friend Bluey is. I thought it was pretty wild that the pony lady wouldn't just let her ride the thing. It's like you can either get $5 or you can get no dollars. Yeah, it looked like there was enough room for two little girls to ride on the pony. There was. It was about the money. Yeah. Yeah. The girls are disappointed and they're saying their goodbyes to the beautiful pony, buttermilk. And we watched the Australian version of this episode, which is slightly different in this spot. And here's how the goodbye went. Goodbye, buttermilk. You're so beautiful. No! That was disgusting. Yeah. I need to stop. I know you guys can't see it because it's an audio podcast, but you can guess what that sound was. Henry, what did you think when you saw this? I thought that it was pretty gross, but funny. Oh, it was definitely funny. Oh my gosh. Yeah, we missed that in the Disney Plus version, but I'm sure glad we got to see it here. The next thing we see is Bandit running towards a booth yelling something. Henry, what is he yelling? He is yelling German sausage. Yeah, he and Bingo want to get some German sausages and Bluie thinks maybe she wants to get one too. She says she wants a German sausage and something. Henry, what did she want on it? She wanted squirty sauce. Which was probably ketchup, you think? Probably. The Indy said she can't have German sausages. Why was that? She can't have the sausage or any of the sauces because of additives. Yeah, she's not allowed to have those things. Her mom doesn't let her. They probably eat more organic foods, which good on them, right? They hear somebody calling out another delectable treat. Stella, what was it? Someone was selling profeages. We get a little bit better look at what Indy can and can't have. Have these got any wheat sugar, glutinous dairy in them? That's all they've got in them. Yeah, it looks like Indy's out of luck there. But Stella, what does Bluie see next? She sees someone with a toffee apple, but this toffee apple is the last one that he has. Yeah, and there's something about seeing where it's the last one that makes you think, oh man, they must be so good. I really need to get that. But can Indy have that? No, she can't. Yeah, because it has sugar in it. Bluie goes ahead and gets the toffee apple and they head over to where Banda and Bingo are. What's happening over there, Amanda? Banda and Bingo are sitting at a table quite happily enjoying their German sausages. We can see Bingo has ketchup all over her face. She's really loving that German sausage. But they're sitting at a table listening to a musician play. Yeah, we see a guy playing guitar, standing on a microphone, and he is played by Jof Bush, who is the musical director of the series. Which is so cool that he got to be a voice in the show. Since he's doing all the music, that was really neat. Yeah, that is really cool. He plays a song and a little kid comes up to put money in the guitar case. Thanks, buddy! That deserves a song! I think that scared that kid, don't you? A little bit. Yeah, just a little. Bluie regrets buying the toffee apple. She's not sure if she likes it and Indy can't have any. And she wants to get her money back and put it in the guitar player's guitar case, and Banda explained to her how the world works. Can I get my five bucks back? That's not really how it works, kiddo. Once you've spent money, it's well gone. Oh, okay. In the meanwhile, we see a chain of events begin to unfold. Amanda, what happens? Winton's dad sends him over to buy him a German sausage. On his way past, we see Indy's mom, and she is super into what the guitar player's doing. She's dancing, listening to the music. And Winton gets to the booth to get the German sausage, and the man sends his son to go get some carrot juice. Henry, what was the son's name? His name was Gruber. Do you remember when we talked about this three years ago? The sausage guy's kid's name was Gruber. Gruber sounds like booger. Geez. Okay, let's not have any more of that. Stella, when Gruber takes off to go get carrot juice, what happens? He gets to the stand and pays, but there are no more carrots at the stand. So the lady running it sends her kid to go and get some carrots from a different seller. After she gets the carrots, honey's mom comes up and buys some fruits or vegetables there, and she gets that five dollar bill back because she paid with a tin, I'm guessing. And she goes and buys a cake from Indy's mom with that five dollar bill. And then Indy comes over and Indy's mom gives her that five dollar bill so they can go and give it to the guitar player. Yeah, Bluey's money came back around, and she could tell because... She could tell because it had the sticker on it. Yeah, it had the special sticker. And she wanted to put it in the guitar case, and now it gets to go in there. And the guitar player was super happy about that. Whoa, five bucks! Thanks, matey. That deserves another song! Who likes to dance? Two, three, four! Amanda, everybody's out there dancing. What dance are they doing? They're doing the floss. Yep, all of them, including Bandit. It was awesome to see them all doing the same thing. He was holding the toffee apple but didn't eat any of it. And then we cut to them on the way home. What happens? Bluey decides that she likes the toffee apple so she starts eating it on the way home. And once she takes a bite, she looks at the apple. Well, guess what? She lost another tooth. Dad, I lost another tooth! Ah, great. And that was the episode. Henry, did we forget anything? Nope, I don't think so. Well, you know what it's time for. Did we learn anything today? Before we talk about what we learned today, I would like to go back to the episode we did three years ago, the first time we saw this, and see what we thought the lesson was. Amanda, what were we supposed to learn in this episode? What goes around comes around. Yeah, you do have a point. That was one thing we were supposed to learn. Nailed it. Yeah, still, what about you? Do you have a take on this? What were we supposed to learn? What goes around comes around. Oh, I see what's getting right in here. Wait guys, I have one that's different. What? What goes around comes around. Great job, guys. Everybody's ganging up on old Dad here. Well, what I think, you guys... Henry, you're just a baby in that. What the heck? Oh my gosh, you guys sounded so little. They do sound so little. They were just babies. Yeah, and it wasn't that long ago, like three and a half years. Right, yeah. Something like that. What did you guys think about hearing yourselves? I was kind of surprised that that was my voice because my voice has changed a lot for me. So yeah, it was just a little surprised that that was me. It's crazy to think that I sounded that little when we started the podcast. Yeah, that episode came out February 14th, 2023. Yeah, that was just a little over three years ago. That is wild. But let's talk about today. Can anybody tell us what did you learn today? I think that the lesson is that whenever you're spending money, that you should try to think about what you're spending it on and just try to spend your money wisely. I agree with Stella on this one. That's exactly what I was going to say. Honestly, I was going to say the same thing. I think it's harder for little kids when you have money like burning a hole in your pocket and you want to spend it on something. You see so many things that you want. You just got to really take a step back and think about what it is you just really, really want. We can't just go and just spend it on just the first thing that we see because you might regret it. And we do that as adults as well. You know, if you have some extra money and you really want to buy something, you just got to take a step back and think about it. Make sure you're making the right decision. I agree. It is really tough. And when you're at someplace like the markets where there's a little bit of everything, it's really easy to get sidetracked by the first shiny thing. When your little $5 seems like a fortune. Until you realize how expensive things are, I was shocked to find that a toffee apple was $5. That seems excessive. That seemed like a lot to me too. I mean, if it was a fried Twinkie, then maybe we could talk. But for a toffee apple, and I like toffee apples, but there are no fried Twinkie. If you've not had a fried Twinkie, you got to try one. It's pretty special. I've never had one. That sounds terrible. It's pretty great. It is not terrible. It's like a corn dog, except inside is a Twinkie. I'm like corn dogs. There are a couple of things that weren't necessarily lessons, but I do want to touch on them. Since Bluey's a little kid, I think it might have been helpful if her parents had given her a little more direction and assistance, instead of just setting her loose. Because little kids don't understand the value of money. They don't realize that if they had a $100 bill, they would trade it for a candy bar and think that was great. They don't understand what they have. And so I think she could have used a little more direction. But the other thing I would say is that pony lady, yes, I'm back on the pony lady, pony lady, you could have let both of those girls ride that pony for the single $5, especially when you saw what a good friend Bluey was being. Because I also want to point out there wasn't a line of people knocking down her door for the pony rides. That's true. $5 is better than no dollars. Exactly. She could have let Indy get up there too. And it's not like that pony is going to go complain to somebody that they let two kids ride me for only $5. I've got words to say. Right. One other lesson I would say is what happened with that pony when they left was super funny. And it should have been in the one on Disney Plus. I understand why they don't show that. It's for yes, it's to maintain the TV rating. But oh man, come on. That was gold. Brown gold. Oh my gosh. No, you did not. Does anyone have any parting thoughts about the episode? I found it funny when I was the pony pooped. Well, I think most of us in here did. One of us in this room claims she's a little too highbrow to find humor in those things. I am. I don't think you are. I am. No, you're not. Who are you talking about? I like this episode because of how sweet, bluey she was trying to be by including Indy and her purchase. But yeah, we see how that worked out in the end. Yeah, that was a tricky one. It was. And it, like you said earlier, you know, it's hard for little kids when they had that money to spend, but her heart was in the right place. I like how they had like the music producer as a character in this episode. I thought that was cool. Yeah, that was really neat. I really liked Joff Bush and I'm glad he got to do this. Yeah, that was pretty cool. One thing about this episode, and I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but that pony lady not given, but oh, hang on, I already said that. Enough with the pony lady. Let's move on. This was a lot of fun and I did like how blue was being to her friend. And the thing with Indy and her dietary restrictions, that's pretty tough to find your way through something like a farmer's market like that and figure out what you can and can't have. And the fact that she was willing to stick to that and not try to go against her mom's wishes behind her back, I thought that was pretty commendable. It definitely was. She was being such a good girl. I also realized that even though we just ate the German sausages, all the sweets, it makes me want to have some. So, man, good job animation team on this. This episode was heaps of fun. I love Bandit's take on the whole thing with the $5 and man, oh man, I get it. Well, guys, we think Bluey is awesome. And speaking of things that we think are awesome, Henry, what should we do next? The Howl Out. OK, listen up. Everyone has to clap and go, woo, yeah, all right, that's awesome. Got it? Hooray! Hooray! We have the best fans in the world. We're so thankful for you guys seriously. We sure do have the best fans. You guys are awesome. The 5-Star Reviews, the comments on Spotify, the emails, the voice messages, we read and listen to all of them. And those kinds of things help other people find the podcast. So thank you, thank you, thank you. Let's take a look at the comments on Spotify. We heard from Vin, our friend Julia, Sarah, Gabriella, Ivy, Sloan, Karen, Alex. And he is getting a lot of comments on the things he posts each time people interested in. The errors he points out and stuff like that. You guys have got to get over to the comments section on Spotify and check it out. Absolutely. We heard from Emma, she is 8 and let us know that there's a Bluey cereal. Oh wow, I haven't seen that. Hearing that kind of reminds me of the episode's her band. It tells Bluey to eat her floor cereal. Which one was that, do you remember? I know it was in season 2. That's all I know. Do you think she was eating her own cereal? You never know, you never know. We heard from Hope, Kyle, someone whose username is Hamiltonfan, and we heard from Shy. Guys, thank you so much, thank you, thank you. We got some emails. We got a voice message from Bethany. She learned how to play the Bluey theme on the piano. Bethany, great job. Yeah, that was really good. Yeah, that was some really good piano playing. Yeah, that was really good. I love hearing young people making music. Music's been such an important part of my life and I'm so glad that young people embrace it. Learning an instrument or singing and stuff like that, it is just so gratifying. And I love hearing from you guys with that. Yeah, it's always cool when somebody sends us the Bluey theme song that they've learned to play on whatever instrument. It's very cool. I wish I could learn an instrument, but I just don't have the patience. Since we're recording the episode at a different time than we normally would, the Howl Out section is kind of short today. But we sure do appreciate you guys. We couldn't do this without the fans, so thank you so, so much. We sure do appreciate you guys. Well guys, until next time, we are out of here. Bye guys. Bye. Bye. Once again! Music I love you guys so much.
