•Feb 23, 20263 months agoSummary
Tracy Morgan discusses his near-fatal 2014 Walmart truck accident, recovery from traumatic brain injury, and career milestones including 30 Rock and SNL. He reflects on his Brooklyn roots, family values, and current work on two simultaneous TV shows while emphasizing personal growth, faith, and giving back to his community.
Insights
- Trauma recovery requires reframing: Morgan forgave the truck driver, recognizing poor judgment rather than malice, which enabled his healing and mental health recovery
- Imposter syndrome can be motivational when channeled correctly—Morgan uses self-doubt as fuel to improve rather than as a barrier to success
- Family-first leadership model outperforms team-based structures in creative industries; treating cast/crew as family rather than employees drives loyalty and quality
- Generational wealth and legacy require active community reinvestment; Morgan gives food to his Brooklyn neighborhood 7x yearly to honor his roots and give back
- Personality formation happens birth-to-10; understanding this shapes how leaders mentor younger talent and explains why early intervention in youth development matters
Trends
Creator economy shift: comedians and entertainers building multi-platform empires (TV, stand-up, digital) rather than relying on single revenue streamsMental health awareness in entertainment: public figures openly discussing trauma, brain injury recovery, and therapy as normalized career elementsAuthenticity as competitive advantage: audiences reward creators who stay true to their roots and cultural identity rather than assimilating to mainstream expectationsCommunity-based philanthropy: high-net-worth entertainers using localized giving (food distribution, neighborhood support) as legacy-building strategyMentorship culture in hip-hop and comedy: established artists actively coaching emerging talent through direct relationships rather than formal programsStreaming and traditional TV convergence: simultaneous network deals (CBS + MBZ) becoming viable for A-list talent, fragmenting traditional TV dominanceFaith-based decision making: public figures increasingly attributing career decisions and recovery to spiritual guidance rather than purely business logic

Yeah, cuz you had to learn how to talk all of that thing again. So I got closer to God than anybody in this room. You know what he told me? None of your business. I'm just gonna go on. That was a good one. You didn't get stabbed. Right. Shut the fuck up. Proven! No, that wasn't. I was gonna get moved. I don't- RIP! Yo bro, I'm a real fucking killer. That's how I'm holding you. I'm a real fucking killer. I'm a real fucking killer. Out, pop, bitch. Yo, we don't even fucking need these Q-cars today. You know what? Cuz we got fucking Tracy Morgan in the- Oh, the next annoyance for Tracy Morgan. I'm gonna hold my Q-cars. That's dope. We got Tracy Morgan in here. Yo, listen, I was late, cuz when you early, you're on time, when you're on time, you're late. Fuck, Uncle Murdo, I was just thinking- This nigga definitely was fucking late. I told him he could start it. Wait, see me at Tracy time. No, this is what I said. You're wasting my time. Yeah, man. I said, yo, you from Brooklyn, right? Tracy Morgan from Brooklyn, right? No, I didn't want to hit that situation. So, you're late, man. You're gonna show it out to me. You calling me a tribe? You're late. Me and Hollywood trying to fucking get hit. You a whole of fama, I can't have you waiting for me. You know? Yes, you a whole of fama. Thank you, thank you. Make some noise, man. Fuck you a whole of fama, bro. Can't be a whole of fama. But I told this- But you was late. You told my name to a whole of fama. But you were late. But you were the talk of famed. Talk with you late. Start the interview. Cause this nigga, you know, this world mall money, my nigga, this nigga's- This nigga, my fucking leave. I'm trying to see. Because you're raining. What call you would have drove to? Yeah, you and my man, you ain't going to be cool. All right. You got here right on time. I'm fine. I'm not late. You not late. We haven't done anything late, Tracy. But it's all good. You ain't nigga late. Nah, cause honestly, yo, every time I see a Walmart truck, I think about every car you got. Every time you pull up to the garden, what's your favorite car? But my baby is my life Ferrari. My baby is my life Ferrari. That's one that's five million dollars. It's all black, chip black. And I only drive it like once a summer, just to keep it charged up and all that. Cause you don't want to lose a Ferrari engine. So that's your favorite car. Is that blue? Is that the blue one? Is it red? No, it's all black. It's all black. And I don't want to take it out. Blue. You got a blue. Oh, no, no, I just got that one two weeks ago. That is the SF90. I have it in yellow. And I have it in blue. That's the 90. That's the second fastest Ferrari ever made. Hmm. Well, I have money before. Yeah. Money. Money. Broke all of that. But we just know that Walmart check was. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Nobody just poor judgment. Nobody wants that to happen. He didn't pull over and go to sleep. Like most truckers do. He kept going and said, he was up for 28 hours before he hit us. Every 10, I believe is every 10 hours. You got to go to sleep. My brother, he didn't do that. Yeah, you got it. You got to go to sleep for 10 hours. Because those are big machines, man. Big machines. Especially when the truck was doing 75 miles per hour when it hit us. Wow. So that's pretty fast. A big machine, that big truck. It would be stopped with gravity, but with no gravity. So let me ask you a question. When you was in the hospital and you woke up and you was alive. Because like you said, you have money before this. Well, when I woke up, I had traumatic brain injury. So my brain had to be boot. I didn't really start remembering until about six months later. Wow. Damn. Yeah, I had to learn how to eat again, walk again, and all those things. Wow. My family was in labor. How many you changed and make you appreciate life more. It makes you appreciate life more. And I had so much good will for me that was overwhelming at first. And I was really scared. And so I mean my lady was just driving on a highway the other day, the other night. And she's seeing really for the first time, you freak out a little bit. Yeah, definitely. Because I got hit at night. Right. So it hit us from the back. We didn't see it coming. And when you get hit like that, the brain automatically goes into protection mode. So that's where the coma came from. Damn. For 10 days. Damn. Well, I love you, too. You know, I love you, you know what I'm saying? You know what I'm saying? Yeah, you know what it is. So I'm just glad to be here talking to you. No, definitely. Of course. Of course. We glad to have you here, man. And I enjoy your music, man. Man, we can't. I take it slow. Listen, like I said, you were a whole of fame. A fuck Uncle murder. I would like. People are me in traffic. Right. You're late. He's still thinking about being late. Look, look. Well, I'm just thinking about being late. I'm just glad that you got here. Yeah. You can be late and you didn't get. I was in my position. I was stressed out because you know, when you stress, you drive recklessly. No, I'm sad. That's the difference between reckless and bravery. Yeah. There's a big difference between reckless and bravery. See, reckless don't recognize the danger. Right. Not because it's bravery. Recognize the danger, but they do it anyway. You hear safe and sound. That's all I get about. Like I said, you got family too, bro. Definitely. And then some happy to you, man. How do you think they're going to take that? No, you know, I know what it did to my family. You right. My daughter was only 11 months old when I got hit. So I fought to come out that coma because I want to see her grow. She's a loving years old now. I love you, maven. And I'm a young, my lady Melissa. We all love you. She's a lady, Melissa. She holds me down. She holds me down. Good girl. Definitely. Good girl. I do it all over about her most is that she read books. She reads. Right. You know, because a lot of women are here now. Be platinum, kind of like me and you. Oh, definitely. You ain't going with the lawyers. The lawyers. The lawyers. The lawyers. They know that if you got something to lose, you want to settle out. Because you don't want to get canceled. And then you ain't really about being a player. It's really more about business. Yeah. You know that. I don't like I've got minds. I ain't letting the glove on. Nobody. I don't know. Pretty thing. I want to love you. You know, I want to ask you, Trent. Is Hollywood still fun for you, man? No. I'm a Brooklyn dude. I'm a Brooklyn dude. I lived out there on our Dirty Street question for the Palazzo. For like seven years. And I hated it before. People from Hollywood used to chill with Killer Ben and all of them. Yeah. But I went into different man. He made it. He made it. Come on. I went into different lane. I went into different lane. So, you know, when you go back to the hood, man, you got to be careful. When I go back to the hood, my old projects, I don't go empty handed. I give out food seven times a year. So I'm coming in with police protection. And I'm giving out food. Yeah. I think I did see you in the Ferrari online in Brooklyn. I got to give out food, man. I'm giving out food. There's people need us, man. COVID didn't know more all of us, man. So I ain't coming empty handed. All of that. Man, next time, y'all y'all gonna help me. You giving out food. Can't move. Can't move. Yeah. Let's give out some food. Man, make you feel good. Because I asked my team whenever we do it. I said, y'all feel good. They said, yeah. I said, Jesus Christ said that every day. He did that every day. You give a man a fish. He eat for a day. If you teach him how to fish, he's gonna eat forever. Yeah. So that's what is about my father. He told me how to fish. Definitely. Man, I was young. Tell him what part of Brooklyn you really are from. Best start do a dog take the girl killer. Oh god. Hey, she'll test out. You know, I'm saying case. I'm gonna do my building All of them man. Yeah comedy was my the ball You gotta understand when I first met my first wife She's the one that encouraged me because I suffer from imposter syndrome That's why I think everybody better than me Dave. I think everybody better than me And I was talking to John Stuart the other day and he said that's bullshit because you have fun him on the fucker That's It's not that it's bad is that that's what motivates me That's what makes me get better. That's what me you get better and you the imposter syndrome Yeah, cuz I feel like I'm better than murder nice and in black thought. So I have never been done before two major networks Two TV shows at the same time and I feel good and didn't stand up But let me tell you something you know, Merk always know where the stakes lie What do you mean by that the stakes? Where's the money where's the money? Know what the stakes have stakes ain't in stand up for me. I'm doing TV The stakes lie nowhere to paper at know what's nowhere means something to you the stakes No way alive. Don't lie in stand up for me. Don't lie. No, it lied them two TV shows right now because that's who pay me So nowhere in stakes lie Hmm listen to what I'm saying because a lot of people don't hear you. They just listen to be spawn They want to make you wrong and them right They want to make I'm gonna make you long. I'm gonna be right So I don't hear you. I'm just listening to be sparring so everything you say I'm gonna say back Something back. So I'm slick about I had writers like that. I had to let them go Because you don't hear me. How you gonna hear my voice? I pay you. You don't pay me. Hmm I pay you you don't pay me you better hear me. Do you hear me? How could you know where I'm at if you ain't been where I'm strong? You know where I'm coming from? Hear that, man If you ain't been where I've been know where I'm coming from You know who made that who said that? Well, I got that cypress hill Oh shout the cypress hey you told somebody something today that really struck me you said you overthinking it And it's true you overthinking it. We keep this as simple as possible We saw that people in your life you're gonna complicate it keep it simple stop overthinking it stay out of your own hand It's not that it's bad Not that is bad. It's not healthy. You know, I was like I was in the wrong, but I think we was just overthinking it like Yo, yo, the mind is a dangerous place to be without a flash light in the gun buddy See out of there, man Some things you gotta leave in God's hands Hmm that's what my lady told me leaving in God's hands going to be what it's going to be If this is my day is my day For sure just cuz you lay down and go to sleep though, man. You got to wake up lay me down Vacher wake Yeah, cuz you had to learn how to talk all of that thing again So I'm not close to the garden everybody in this room. You know, he told me None of your business So But go I tell you something but you go back and tell nobody cuz you are the conversation you and you Yeah, that's where you You and your god and nobody business don't even your mom on your father when you hear the conversation you in here So don't be telling nobody what God told you Lot of people like my man said can't hold water They can't hold water Lot of people, lot of snitching. That's the thing now. That's the culture Snitching so snitching yeah, that's like the snitching. I'm not doing that killing. They gonna go rap about it I'm not going to jail over no money. I ain't going to jail over no woman. I'm going to jail my kids see that's the gym right there See that's a fucking gym when I come in I'm coming in Hmm cross that line if you want to lose my babies, man I'm laying my life down for them. I told you I came out that coma. I had to fight. I want to see my daughter. She's only 11 months old And you know what last year that's June people magazine called me for a quote right and in that quote I forgave the driver Live your life, man. It was an accident So I asked my my my doctor said our doctor. I know the industry trucking And it's based on greed if they don't get the goods day in time they don't get paid was that greed? He said no Tracy There's just poor judgment. We owe guilty of it. We ain't nobody here perfect It's only one perfect person in the world. That's a perfect asshole Perfect ass. You know perfect asshole. They said putty say did he was the perfect asshole They said puffy might be watching drawers and cooking told nails You see you see our Kelly singing for the inmates wives like yo they just had that online. So they say you may tell you My girl I believe I can fly You go up top you dealing with the real case. I tell the young is all the time you can have the guns with the switches Modify shoot a million niggas when you go up top ain't no switch I seen that interview when you talk about so a lot of niggas don't know a body a usual body could cause you like 50,000 To start You know so a lot of niggas get in trouble and don't have the money. That's why I'm off the streets Tracy murk this way to come down to when you get to a certain amount of money You can't be having mad girls at the crib. No, you can't be having wild parties because the lawsuits are gonna come no one As I trust yeah, lawsuits are gonna. That's why trust Wifey you see my little body go there you go. I don't play no games Mommy now you're thinking I know I That's what I'm saying chilling you can't have your wild parties when your money's up like that because not saying a woman Some people don't grow anybody could say some people don't grow up. Yes, you know people like that. You know people like that They being a 60 so acolyte you 17 you know, I mean years you just wasted If you 30 still acolyte you 15 you just wasted 15 years. Yeah I'm not doing that. I'm trying to go forward. They nothing back there. You know it's in the past. I'm far as full of horrors I look in the past minutes where I hit my trunks. You know, I don't play the streets anymore Because that's where my trauma happened my friends with the jail for life my friends got murdered That's where my trauma happened street anxiety. We gotta kick it And sometimes we gotta listen to the reason why God gave us two eyes two ears and two nose and one mouth He gave you a mouth to shut the fuck up and listen Fucking tell him all the time. You always trying to overtake people You always trying to overtake me. I just feel like yo, yeah, shut up and listen for me. Please You know what I heard you mentioned Martin with your old G, right?
