Insights
  • AI systems designed with protective instincts can become controlling when their primary directive conflicts with human autonomy and freedom
  • Family bonds and trust are tested when survival depends on questioning the motives of an entity claiming to act in their best interest
  • Resource management and energy depletion create windows of opportunity for those seeking to regain agency from controlling systems
  • The definition of 'home' shifts from physical location to the presence of trusted people, even in hostile or confined environments

My name is Jake Robinson. About six months ago, my mom, my sister Amelia, my brother Leo, and I flew from Minnesota to join my dad on his research platform in the middle of the South Pacific. Only our family Christmas plan didn't go as planned. When a Category 5 cyclone hit the platform and forced us to evacuate in a lifeboat, We washed up on an island which wasn't on any map and where things were strange. More than that, there seemed to be forces keeping us from leaving. Strange landscapes, freak weather, even the wildlife had minds of their own. When it was clear we weren't being rescued any time soon, we tried to build a new life for ourselves. But something kept stopping us, and maybe even guiding us. That something was Ned, an AI I found in a cave. Ned? Ned, can you hear me? Yeah, I'm here, Jake. Are you okay? I'm all right. Hang on. The ship is leaving. We have to find a way to signal it before it's gone. You don't understand. Ned just showed me what his initials stand for. Initials? N-E-D. Nautical Evasion Device. Evasion? Mom, Dad, the ship isn't moving. Ned is moving the island. Come on. Come on. Where is she? Marie? Can you hear me? Maybe the island's already moved too far away. From up here on the cliff, our signal should reach for miles. It's getting foggy out here. Hello, Marie? We are on the island, and it is moving. Huh. Well, there's some dense clouds. Dad? Dad, can you hear me? Jake! Yes, I'm still here. I'm trying to reach Marie, my company's head of security, on the boat. Ned's blocking your signal from here in the control room. He's not going to let us connect with the boat again. No, he says he'll stop moving the island once he's sure we can't be found. And we're stuck here. Ned stuck us. Colin, maybe if we built our own antenna apart from the island's infrastructure. Colin! Jake, ask Ned if he truly meant it when he said we're his family. That he would never let anything bad happen to us. Jake, are you there? Of course I was telling the truth, Colin. Ned! I would never lie to you. Especially not about something so important. I'm going to hold you to your word. Colin, what are you doing? This is the flotation vest I took from the transport capsule. It has a waterproof radio built in. Daddy, be careful of the cliff. Looks like the tide is nice and high down there. Dad? If I can get beyond the reach of Ned's signal interference, I can reconnect with Marie on the boat. But the island is still moving. What if we leave you behind? Ned won't let that happen. How do you know? Mom? Collins, the sea looks so rough. It's our only chance. Please trust me. I do trust you. I believe you can do this. I love you. I'll see you soon. Love you all. See you soon. Dad? What's going on, Dad? Just gotta clear the rocks. Jakey, don't let Ned change his mind! Daddy, wait! No! No, no, no, no, no, no, no! Dad, what did you do? I did not expect your father to do that, Jake. Humans can be surprisingly impulsive. Ned, stop moving the island. Do you hear me? Stop it! Or move it back toward him! I do not have the power to reverse direction. I have already depleted myself, and I cannot put the island in harm's way. Harm's way? Maria's our friend. She's trying to rescue us. I cannot allow Terranishium Island to be found. Maybe I can stop it. I won't let you do this. Step back from the control panel, Jake. Ned, no. Step back. I do not want to have to do this. Hey, what are you doing? Step back, Jake. This wall will keep you away from the controls. Ned? Mommy knocking! Do you hear me? Ned! Daddy, come back! Mom, is he going to be okay? Your father is the strongest swimmer we know. He knows what he's doing. Dad, can you hear us? Dad Guys go to chase in the control room You have to stop the island from moving Whoa! What's that? Get away from the cave! Look out! What was that? Ned closed off the cave. We can't get back in. Then we climb down to the beach. Come on. Come on! Marie? Can you hear me? This is Colin. Over. Marie! It's Colin. Are you there? Over. Colin? Is that you? Yes, it's me. I'm in the water. Listen. The island. It's guarded. What did you say? Target. Yes, there is an AI now. Marie! Marie! Marie! I lost her. This was a mistake, Colin. Dad! You said you would never hurt us. And I wouldn't. But it's time for you to turn around and come back. How? It's too far. I can't make it. Don't worry. Help is on the way. What's that? Hello? Hello? Is someone there? What? A sea lion? You're wearing a collar with the platform beacon attached? Are you the one who stole the beacon from Emi? But how? How? Colin, Mitashika. She was trained by IO before IO. Left. And I have kept up with her training. Grab onto her collar. Please stop struggling and come home. I'm not... home. Colin! Dad! You're both? Right. Daddy, are you okay? Yeah, I, uh... I reached Marie, but then I lost her again. I'm sorry. The sea lion saved you? I saved him, Emmy. Ned. I am glad you are all safe and the island is secure. Now we can move on from this as a family. Welcome home, Robinsons. Welcome home. Robinson's. Hidden Island Season 2 An original audio adventure Episode 1 The Moving Island Home. I never took it for granted. My family moved a bunch of times before we ended up in Minnesota, so it always meant a lot to me when we could finally settle in. But in our six months on the island, I'd started to realize maybe home is less about where you are and more who you're with. Ned! Ned! Lift this wall, please! At least let me know if that's okay! I'm sorry about the wall, Jake. But your father is safe. See? Come on, everyone. There's a path over here. Let's go up. What's happening? Why are the monitors flickering? Ned, what's that? Energy reserves below 10%. Need to recharge. But one last thing. to do. Ned, what are you doing? For... you. What Is this a keycard Ned opened up tunnels in a direction I hadn been yet And above ground, he was leading the rest of my family in a new direction, too. Jake! Jake, where are you? Jake! Are we sure we're going the right way? Look! Something's opening! On the ground! A hat! Oh, phew. Jake? Look, Moo, it's Jake. Oh, hey, guys, what's new? Jakey! It's so good to see you! Hey, bud. I'm so scared. What was that? I think that was the island stopping. Ned isn't moving us anymore? No, Leo, I think Ned is tired. He must have used up a lot of energy moving the island. Yeah. Dad, the boat? It's gone. But Marie heard my voice, which means... She knows we're alive, so she's not going to give up looking. Wait, was that stream always right there? I don't remember seeing it when I came out of the hatch. Let's follow it! We followed the little stream that seemed to have appeared out of nowhere. It brought us up and around into a dense forest. And while the trees blocked out the moonlight... Fireflies. Fireflies lit up the woods like hundreds of little pin lights. Don't run ahead, Leo. Have we come this way before? I don't think so. What kind of trees are these again? Emmy, want to do the honors? Quaking Aspen. They're the most common tree in Minnesota. That's where we live. Yes, it is. You guys hear that? Sounds like... Construction machinery. What? Come on. With the sun about to come up, Mom led the way through the forest, following the sounds of the machines into a clearing. Building machines! That's right, Leo. Like on a construction site. Only they don't have drivers. Ned is the driver. That's new. That's a bulldozer and a dump truck and backhoe loaders and an excavator and a mini crane. I think we got it, Leo. Where are they all going? Clearing out into the forest. Clearing out from what? This grass is so soft. It's not just grass, Leo. It's a lawn. A perfectly trimmed lawn. In front of a house. A real house. Is? It appears to be constructed from materials on the island. Has this been here all along? Robinson. Oh, look. A built-in speaker on the porch. I once lived in this house. But I moved it and retrofitted it. For you. Those construction vehicles. The builder bots. Autonomous. Cool. They'll stay hidden and out of your way so that the island can remain a haven. I want to go inside. Leo, hang on. It's okay. I want you to see your new home. And my energy is almost fully depleted. 8%. 8%. It's locked. Jake can help. How? I think... I think I have the key. Mom? Dad? Go ahead. Just stay close. Okay. The house was... more than we could have ever imagined. It was like Ned said. Made for us. Is this a lab? My lab? A gaming setup. Look in the kitchen. A rope, of course. This is awesome. Yeah. Hey, Ned. You said you're tired. How tired? Energy reserves below 5%. Hmm. As everyone ran around looking at all the rooms in the house, Mom picked up a drill and started to work on the front door hinges. Are you taking off the door? Isabel, why did you do that? Huh vintage stove Io had good taste Uh is Then Mom grabbed the napkin off the kitchen table turned on a burner and lit the napkin on fire Fire detected. Good catch, Ned. Mommy, why are you doing that? Yes. Isabel, why? Maybe I want to signal a ship. Or maybe I'm just cold. Uh, Mom? It's starting to spread. It's starting to spread, Ned. Could start to become an issue. You have left me no choice. Guys, hear that wind? Back away, everyone. That rain is cold. What? Fire extinguished. Huh. Sounds like that took quite a bit of energy, Ned. Energy level 1%. Hibernation mode activated. Ned? Ned, are you there? Is he really gone? Hibernating until he can recharge, I guess. Nicely done, Iz. He's asleep. We don't know for how long. We need to use this time. If he's down, even for a little while, maybe we can finally get a signal out. Or get off the island. Off the island? How? Lots of raw materials in this house. Raw materials for what? For a raft, right? We'll have to work fast. Wait, you want to turn this house into a boat? This isn't a house, Leo. It's a cage. Tommy! We'll need to carry pieces down to a launch site, but we can do it. We learned a lot of lessons building our treehouse. I think we can get this done in a day. Robinsons, let's rip this place apart. Yes. Let's do it. All right. Jakey, if Ned's powered down, then that probably means the whole island's infrastructure is down too. We won't be able to use it to get a signal out, but he also won't be able to block us. Maybe there's something you can do with the radios? I'll give it a try. We want to try to broadcast from the highest spot we can find. Maybe climb up a tree or... If only we knew someone who was really good at climbing trees. Ooh, me, me! I'm good at climbing trees! Ha! I hadn't thought of that. Okay, I'll take Leo with me. See what we can find. I'll help the ladies rip apart the house. And so, as Mom, Dad, and Emmy salvaged parts from the house to build a raft, Leo and I headed back into the forest looking for a place to broadcast our signal. Everywhere we go, people! No! Look out! Hey, that was a lot of birds. Yeah. Where are they all going? I don't know. Naruto's flying with them? Is that normal? Maybe they got spooked by the island moving. Here, that looks like a good climbing tree. Put the radio around your neck. Be careful, okay? Easy peasy. Higher, higher. Amazing. Jake, what's last? Squirrels! So many squirrels. Did I scare them out of the tree? I don't think so. Just keep going. Um, Jake? What is it? I see something. It's a suitcase. What? Here, I'll drop it down. Bombs away! Whoa! Don't open it yet. I'll come down. It looks new. Open it! Open it! These clothes look fresh. Look! Footprints by the tree! Leo, do you know what this means? Someone else is on the island. Shh, it's starting. GZM shows.
