•Apr 2, 2026about 2 months agoSummary
The Bills Squad hosts discuss Josh Allen becoming a father, Brandon Beane's draft strategy, the controversial Vrabel-Brady nameplate incident, and mock draft analysis showing cornerback projections that don't align with the team's actual needs. They also cover Kirk Cousins signing with the Raiders and debate top draft prospects like Sunny Styles.
Insights
- Brandon Beane's draft tendencies remain consistent despite coaching change—expect defensive front-seven focus and veteran receiver acquisitions over first-round WR picks
- Mock drafts projecting cornerback at pick 26 reflect outdated roster evaluation; Bills have addressed secondary with Benford and Harrison long-term deals
- Parenthood significantly impacts professional athletes' perspective and performance; Josh Allen's new fatherhood may provide emotional grounding for high-pressure situations
- Joe Brady's transition from coordinator to head coach requires mastering emotional control on sideline while maintaining authentic personality and player relationships
- Sunny Styles represents rare unicorn defensive prospect (21 years old, elite athleticism) that could justify breaking typical draft philosophy rules

Jeremy White, Joe Moreno, and the big O'Jerry Estrotsky are twice-weekly conversation about the Buffalo Bills. Three weeks from the NFL Draft and ready to talk Bills with you. Everything Bills. That's Draft Plan. That's Vrabel Gate, as Mike Vrabel crumpled up Joe Brady's name tag at the coach's breakfast. We'll get in on that, and we'll of course start off by saying a big hearty congratulations to QB1. Josh Allen and his wife, Haley, had their first child. The announcement came down a little earlier today. Baby Girl and the statement from the happy couple is, our baby girl has arrived. We're feeling incredibly grateful and blessed in savoring these early moments. Thank you so much for the love and the well wishes. A statement from Josh and Haley. They're kind of, you know, the Mafia is happy today. It's a big party, guys. We can all go downtown and celebrate the new arrival, you know? I feel like we need to go to Pride Rock and they need to hold the baby out above. Let's go, yeah. I know the city above. I know that reference. Yes. We need to go to Pride Rock and hold that child above everyone and say, look who it is. Who holds it up? Is that Dion? Yes. That's incredible. Baby, that would be awesome. That would be good. I'm fired up for Josh and Haley. I have two daughters and obviously that's kind of the fun part of this announcement is we didn't know if it was a boy or a girl. And Josh Allen, the girl dad, let's go. I get it now. My guy didn't want to win a Super Bowl before his baby girl was around. And so now it's all making sense. I'm excited for them, obviously, big congratulations. And it's been cool to watch Josh Allen grow up from the guy at Wyoming that was, you know, a little reckless, the guy that said stats are for losers, to being a very, very, you know, polarizing prospect, to being undoubtedly, you know, one of the best players in all the NFL and MVP. Now a dad. Pretty good. And just like anybody else's life changes, you know, I'm inclined to say no matter what work of, what line of work you're in, you become different. And Jerry, you know, a lot of players have kids and your kids start coming around the locker room. And, you know, this bill's locker room, this bill's community, I'd imagine. Like there are lots of kids and it's going to be a pretty kid friendly locker room, especially now that QB1 is in the mix. Oh, without a doubt, kids come around. And there's a lot of different events for families and the kids all get together and play. And Halloween's awesome because you always get together with the families and go out trick or treating together. And it's a lot of fun. And honestly, I think this is a distraction that a lot of times you need as a professional athlete, you know, you're living in it so much and you get reminded of it so much. It's nice to just come home and look at this little thing you helped make and be like, Man, this is, it puts things in perspective about really where you are and your place in the world. It kind of changes. I don't want to act like I know what it's like to be an NFL player or a quarterback or what Josh Allen carries. But I know that there are plenty of times where, you know, maybe there was some feedback that I didn't care for that somebody gave me that I thought was misplaced or something along those lines. And you, you step out of the office and you see those little girls or you see your wife and the perspective really does come together. And you, you move on and can really enjoy the blessing that is your family and your kids. And so I'm excited for Josh to have that as well. So a budding family, a growing family now and that kind of life training camp. You know, I imagine training camp gets tougher. You got to be away from the family. You know, when you're a younger guy, you just go to training camp, whatever you're with all the fellas, you're with all your teammates and people that you want. You work with and now training camp is really like getting away from your wife and daughter in this case. So I imagine it might be a little bit challenging, but you know, whatever it's, it's, it's great news for the bills family. And I feel like you can just kind of sense everybody happy for Josh. So on to the next question. It's not lost on me that we talked about Josh throughout the week this week because at the AFC coaches breakfast and through the course of the owners meetings, we got the news that Josh should be full go for off season stuff. You know, his, his foot that required surgery and all that. And it's been a busy off season, right? Taking time away, getting that boot off his foot, getting off crutches. You got to be off crutches. If you're going to be, you know, running back and forth, trying to help with the baby in the house, right? You got to be, you got to be spry. You got to be ready. But I thought guys, one thing we could talk about today is the best way for the bills to help Josh Allen. That is a common thread from the coach, from the GM about how they're going to build the team. There's another conversation. Lance Lysoski, the Buffalo news talking to Joe Brady. And he says in that conversation, Brady says, I want Josh Allen to get everything he deserves in his life, right? Like a very, just a full endorsement of this player deserving the very best. And I feel like if we approach the draft that way, if Brandon Bean approaches the draft that way, what does that look like? I mean, like, how do you, how do you do that? Offense, defense, whatever. And how that can kind of be the backdrop to how both of these men, Bean and Brady, feel they owe this guy better. We got to be better because he deserves our best. I think a lot about what has let Josh Allen down in the past. And I think it's been the defense. I think that some of these, almost all of these playoff losses have come down to the defense didn't do enough and made it harder on Josh Allen to go out there and score enough points to win the game. And, you know, in some situations where Josh has done enough and the defense couldn't get a stop and give him another opportunity. And certainly Josh has had some chances that he wasn't able to lead the team on a game winning drive. I would maybe point to his supporting cast, whether that was drops or maybe a protection issue here and there that took away from those things. But I think they got a, there has to be less stress for him to go out there and score 35 points to overcome a defense that doesn't show up in these games. And so I'm hopeful that the scheme evolution and Jim Leonard can be a huge part of that. But, you know, there's a lot of work to do and giving Jim Leonard what he needs to allow this defense to be the unit that I think a lot of us are excited about, where there's a huge shift coming with this front seven on defense. And they really haven't done anything. They brought in Bradley Chubb. And outside of that, you're hoping that Greg Russo and Ed Oliver can transition to the new scheme and that TJ Sanders and Deion Walker and Dwayne Carter and Landon Jackson can develop. And fit into a defense they weren't drafted to be in. You're hopeful that Tyrell Bernard, it can be healthy and find his game that Dorian Williams can be a full-time player that Michael Hoyt can come back and be healthy. And show no rust and that Bradley Chubb can stay healthy. That's a lot. That's a lot that has to come together for this front seven. And there's just not been any additions to it. And right now I can get excited about draft picks, but there's still rookies. They're going to have to come in and be a huge part of the foundation of where this defense is going to go. And so I sure hope that there's some veterans coming here to help this front seven. So that this defense can be what it needs to be. And then ultimately not let Josh Allen down. And so that's kind of where I land on this idea. Thinking about football is this, no matter how we look at individual players and it's changed because of social media. And I think that especially the kids nowadays, it's about individual players as opposed to franchises all the time. You know, we used to love teams still do these younger kids like players. With that being said, football is still the greatest team sport in the world. And when I look at this bill's roster over the years, it hasn't been good enough, especially like Joe says on the defensive side of the ball. And if you want to help Josh Allen, let's make the team better, make the roster better, make the defense, add the pieces offensively you need and make this thing complete. And I think that's always been the biggest deal to me is, and I know we've had some rosters that have been close, but I've never felt like we've gone into an off season and been like, we have no question marks. This is a team that can win for a win a championship. We felt that way about the quarterback and some other spots. But, you know, especially defensively, it's been a struggle and and that's where you want to help Josh Allen make this roster better, make the 53 guys better, make them complete. And that's what they've really got to do this off season to continue to try to get there is find ways to make the defensive, you know, that defense better. Find a couple of pieces offensively. Like I've said, you all laugh at me. Don't neglect that offensive line because it's getting ready to change really fast right before your eyes and you won't even see it happen. And all of a sudden you're going to be going, where's all the talent? And so there's things like that you've really got to pay attention to. Yeah, there's also, as you mentioned that, Jerry, there's almost the the warning of what happened at wide receiver. You never want to let that happen at offensive line, right? You want to make sure that you are when Spencer Brown and Deon Dawkins, when their time comes that you are ready, well prepared, you don't wait too long. You know, just kind of just trot out guys and say, well, Josh will figure it out. You would never do that with the offensive line. And I think the way Bean talks about that position, he probably won't do that, which kind of gets to like the idea of Brandon being in his tendencies. I am approaching the draft like the GM is the same guy. And sure, there's a different head coach, but I've seen the way he has built this roster through the years. And I expect it to be for the most part pretty similar. Even the DJ more trade, if we really look at that guy, all that is is the Amari Cooper trade earlier. Instead of waiting until October, it's, I got to make an upgrade of this position. I'm going to do it. And I think it's a better idea because more should have more time left. But the other side of it is what does he do? He seeks out veteran receivers and he absolutely attacks the front seven with ticks like nobody's business. The flip side of how little the bills have spent on receiver in this, in the draft over the years is how much they have spent on their front seven. Granted, you might not think they're getting the results, but I fully expect that 26 pick will be a defensive player and that most of the rest will be as well. And I'm ready for Brandon being a break tendency, but guys outside of just Joe Brady being the head coach, what else would there be to make us think that he would? Yeah, that's wild. I mean, for whatever reason, a receiver, man, he's got a really hard time buying new cars. He likes to buy that car with just under a hundred thousand miles. So it's getting, it's still got a little bit of warranty left, but not too much. And it's, it's pretty inexpensive. And for whatever reason, man, he won't pull the trigger on a new one. And just like we've talked about, we would love for him to get the KC Concepcion sitting there at 26. It makes sense. Pick them. Have we seen that yet? I mean, it would have to be a monumental turn of events. Like the largest heel turn ever in the WWE of her face going to a heel for him to do that. But you haven't seen it. Maybe I might ask you this, guys. Because again, like that position specifically, who's the receiver I was the most upset he passed on in the first round? It's not a long list. If any, I get more upset about second and third and fourth. Like this is where you should be doing some things. First round, boy, like the J.S.N. Zay flowers year, he would have to go get one. And other years I dream about it that they're kind of not like Christian Watson. Is that the best name I've got that he went in the second? So it'll be interesting if like there are really good names on the board and he goes a different direction. Well, you know, then the kind of confirms it what you're saying, Jerry. But I'm trying to think of like the best big name where I was mad right away. I understand your saying. You're gonna make it hard even this year. Right. And it even makes it harder this year. If he doesn't trade out a one and sticks and picks, it makes it harder to even get a receiver again because now you're not picking till the third round. What 90 some picks later. I think that's a good point, Jeremy, where there hasn't really been those guys in the first round where I wish being would have picked them. But I do extend it to the second, third, fourth round and realize that there were some opportunities that I would have pound stolen. And certainly some different receivers like, you know, when they drafted Key on there was definitely other receivers. I would have preferred like a lad, Mckonkey. But it's it's more the general nature of not picking them second, third, fourth round. And when you've needed them, they haven't been in the pipeline to step into more prominent roles. And then you wind up using those picks on those veterans at the deadline where are I, you know, maybe that could have been different if you weren't in that position, but they're in that position. And so I I would be surprised. And I think I've said this since the first time I watched Concepcion out of Texas saying them, I'd be surprised if he makes it to 26. But that would definitely be an example of if it happens and he's on the board at 26 and he's not the pick that I would find myself disappointed in not going with that player in the first round. And maybe maybe we need to be ready for both outcomes. Like first of all, for him to not sniff 26, but then, well, he's never really done it. He's never picked that receiver like that. And so expectations minus reality equals disappointment. And I try to I try to resist disappointment the best I can. Right. Comment here about the four receiver run with Zay flowers and JSN was brutal. That's the concave year. Right. If it goes a little different because the draft is some part your plan and the other parts are, well, what happens in front of you? Maybe you try to get up. Maybe you can't get up if Quentin Johnson were available. Will they have taken him? Maybe maybe not if JSN is, would they? Maybe maybe not. We kind of don't know the four go and then the bills quickly go right to the tight end drafting Dalton concave, which I think we have a good idea. That was always a possibility because Dawson Knox has since said he was told ahead of time. We like a tight end. We might go for a tight end. So who really knows ultimately what they do. I do want to bring up one comment here because even though I don't agree with this comment from Tori, I want to mention it. Why can't these guys figure out McDermott wanted no part of offense? I would say the answer to that is because that's not true. Right. However, however, this might be to Jerry's part in the cold open, which being do we get the being that wants to prove he's different and by drafting an offensive player, he kind of, hey, look at that. He got, he took an offensive player because McDermott never wanted that. Like that would be the narrative in that spot. Or does he just kind of, you know, continue to attack the front, the front seven because that's always what he's done. So just to answer that comment, I don't, I don't think it's true that McDermott wanted no part of offense. Not at all. Wouldn't it be wild if we spent all this time, we made a coaching change. We've gone on a national media tour for the last month and a half, making sure everybody hears our message over and over and over again. And then you go and you get to that spot. You do the same thing. He always did. That would be, that would be interesting to me. I think it would be pretty wild. So I kind of maybe in the back of my mind still hold hope that he's in this, this deal to prove everyone wrong and prove that he's, he's the guy improve that he can get this thing done. And maybe we'll see something different, but Joe, you brought it up the other day. I can't remember when it was, but if we stay with history, we're getting ready to get a linebacker in the first round. Well, maybe it was me, you, Jeremy. I can't remember what are you guys was talking about. I think it's just about being aware of what being has and has not done. And, you know, I've, I've been talking a lot about some of these one-text like a Caden McDonald. Well, he hadn't done that, right? And, and, obviously there's a new scheme, but I don't really have a past move that I could point to that he's been a part of, I guess, maybe Starloat to Lele, but, you know, that was obviously a different type of situation. But I know that Brandon Bean talks a lot about three down impact. And, and that's something that he really values. And so if I'm trying to think about what types of positions he put, you know, typically drafts where the need is and then where you can get like a three down impact. I think a lot about linebacker is something that's truly in play at 26. And I don't know that we're talking enough about it. I actually, I actually think to me, if I look at all the defense inside of the ball where they should go to me, that's where they should go. But that's something we can talk about later. Yeah. No, it wouldn't surprise me at all. I mean, you know, you guys know me and what I would deep in my heart, my deepest of hearts love, but I'm ready for a, if DJ more doesn't happen, I'm banging the drum louder. When we get back, I want to take a quick break and then get back to what we, what I mentioned to my part of the cold open, which is, does ESPN know something that we don't? Because their mocks have a bit of a consistent message. They have a new one out today, a round table mock with Mel Kuiper and Matt Miller. And the bills pick. I cannot make any sense of it. So I'll see if you guys can make any sense of it. How would work out? We'll get to that coming up next year on the bill squad show. This episode of bill squad is brought to you by Fandall Sportsbook. Back here on the Build Squad Show, Jeremy White, Joe Marino and the big O Jerry Ostrowski as we chat with you. Build stuff as we do every single week. Josh and Haley have their baby girl. We send a congratulations to them. We also want to give a go Sabres tonight. Sabres have a chance to end their playoff drought and clinch a spot. Conjuring up members of the bills own playoff drought when that ended, when Andy Dalton and Tyler Boyd connected to send the bills to the postseason for the first time in forever. A 17 year playoff drought for the bills and they got in and I was going back to my phone guys. I have video of my entire family dancing around the television after that game. We don't have the moment like we're Boyd scored live because that was so shocking. But when that game ended out, it was the family dancing and then going up the street to the bar to celebrate that the bills had made the playoff something, you know, that at one point seemed almost impossible. And now of course is regular. I am excited about the Sabres and them breaking this drought and whether it happens tonight or the next game, it's going to happen. But where I just, I don't, it's not as dramatic. No, when we, when we woke up that day, that the bills ended the drought, nobody was really thinking that the bills had a chance to go to the playoffs and then they win their game. And it's the, it's the drama of that Bengals Ravens finish that ends the drought where this Sabres deal has felt inevitable for weeks. And I know that like it still has to happen and it will be really, really awesome, but the drama is just not there. And I'm glad because this Sabres team has earned it, right? Like they're really playing good hockey and winning a lot of games and they've, they've earned it. But the drama piece just won't be the same. Now it is exciting. I've been following it. If you know, they win the night they get in, if they lose, at least maybe my flyers can help them out with a win and help them get in. But it's going to be awesome. I mean, it's Sabres hockey is good when the Sabres are in the playoffs. There are certain teams that need to be in it. The Sabres need to be in it and it's for it to be good. And it'll be good to watch playoff hockey and have them involved. And you know, hopefully that goal tending can, can find a way to be consistent and good. And they can find somebody to hang their hat on and really stay with throughout the playoffs. Yeah. The one other difference that you lay out there, the bills got in and we thought there was no chance they could win like multiple playoff games. Right. They were just, they were a decent team. It's Tyler. They are patching it together and like we made it. Maybe if we beat the Jags, it'd be the story of a lifetime and then they lost 10 to three. Whereas the Sabres, I mean, they could, they could maybe do some damage. So they could make a run. They could, they could see if they can clinch tonight. All right. So mock draft season, mocking a mock. You guys make it make sense. Today, the latest from ESPN has the bills in the first round. Matt Miller again ESPN on Twitter at NFL draft scout does great work. He has multiple times and he's not alone. But he's the one I've seen do it multiple times has the bills going corner in the first round, the corner out of Clemson, Evian Terrell. I mean, what is less likely than corner in the first round? I don't know anybody that covers this team that feels like they can make sense of it given that they signed Delford. They have Herston and Benford here long term, both of them. It just would seem like big time diminishing returns. Joe, you said like three down players. What corner is going to be on the field for three downs if they draft in the first round? Hopefully there's no corner that you didn't just name that sees the field for the bills this year, right? It should be Benford and Herston and Alfred is one of the, you know, primary slot options. I don't really understand it. And if it was just like one mock draft, it'd be one thing, but it is every day prominent, you know, sources out there. Big time draft people, big publications that are putting cornerbacks to the bills. And I, as somebody who's, I've, you know, I've written a lot of mock drafts in my life. There are certainly players and teams where you kind of just, you just have to kind of dump a guy. And I feel like that's what's happening is there's just dumping corners to the bills and it doesn't make a lick of sense to me. I don't, I don't understand it, especially with the other needs that exist with this front seven. A receiver makes more sense and into your offensive linemen makes more sense. A safety makes more sense. I, I've, I've tried to ask myself the question, what am I missing? And I can't get there. I just can't get there. With the Dory and Strong situation, I would not doubt they take one later in a developmental spot. Somebody can bring along slowly, you know, and get them up to speed and ready to play and be somebody that can play teams and that type of stuff. But no, I mean, think about the things we need. I just don't see this with a cornerback in the first round. It'd be a shock to be just like safety would be a shock as well. I know that everybody seems to want to throw DB's our way. But again, I mean, is this a thing where we go edge? Is the thing where you go into your defense alignment? Kind of the linebackers that fit what we want are later round guys, second, third round guys. So, you know, maybe we, you try to get that into your guy or edge guy early. If you don't go wide receiver, if you don't want to buck the trend and, you know, like I say, but yeah, cornerback is just makes no sense at all. It's mocked. It's it's mocked. RFC is funny. Like this ESPN one, Matt Miller had the bills taken the corner and the next pick is Casey, conceptually on to the Niners. And the next pick after him is Caden McDonald of Ohio State. If you want to see Joe Marino's hat fly off his head and just like, right? They're added to the list. Added to the list. There's been plenty of those already. But think about it. But think about it. We talk about this and bucking the trend. This would be, this would be our, our health situation, right? This would be it. This might happen like being trades out of the first round or, or whatever. And then the next pick is the Niners and Concepts. You know, and the Texas take McDonald and who do we want to throw it at 29 to just add more, more fuel to the fire? Who do you want to put there? Some good speedy edge rusher or, or, or, or cash is cash is how goes 29 to the chiefs. Right? Yeah. Right. Or the, or the Patriots. Right. Let me ask you about real quickly on a name because we do think edge is more likely and I have a, I have another little game to play on what's less likely. But a key message or is a name that I saw him pegged to the box maybe today in the teens. Yeah. I did also see, but I've also seen him drop down late Miami defensive end. Like what can you tell us and tell everybody about a key Mazzador because I feel like we've got the short list of edges and pass rushers that we've talked about. And I don't know if we on this show have ever talked about Mazzador yet. Athletic, technical and physical. The, the, the story is always going to be that he's going to be a 25 year old rookie. That's, that's what I think produces a wide range of projections for where he's ultimately going to go. But the skill set is the skill set and the guy can ball. I mean, you're not, you're not sacrificing a lot with Mazzador that I think you are with some of the other guys that we talk about in this range, like an armace and Thomas or a cash is how, because he does defend the run. And he's got every bit as exciting of a pass rush profile with more length than those guys. And you could just tell he was coached by Jason Taylor because there's a technical component to how he plays the game in terms of processing and deploying technique and maximizing the physical upside that. I think comes when you work with a Jason Taylor and I think he's going to be a high impact player. And now, you know, look, that second contract is going to be goofy because he's going to be pushing 30 years old. But I think he's got a chance to come in right away, which is important, right? You don't want to be 25 and need a lot of work. And I think that's what really works for him. I think he'll come in close to a finished product and you'll get a lot of impact. And so I don't know that he gets a 26. The age factor makes it interesting, but for a team like Tampa, who's really in big time need of edge rush help, I think he makes a ton of sense. Let me ask you this something, guys. And I know that a lot of times these guys get tips and things like that. Maybe they don't want to put it out there or whatever. Could could the STN constantly saying we're going to take corner be maybe a. A sign that they know something about a trade. No. I think it's for so many years that the bills did need a corner, right? Like that this was absolutely a relevant conversation. But with Benford proving who he's become in Harrison last year in the first round, like that to me, they've addressed it and I don't feel like everybody else knows that. Or maybe they think about Trey White and how, you know, like he was an important part of this defense last year and he's not back. Or they know, or they don't know we picked up Alfred and we got rid of Terry Taren Johnson. Or I don't, but I would expect you to know that, right? That those are those are things I have an expectation. If you're going to write a mock draft for me to consume, I'd expect you to know that. So the cab driver didn't tell anybody at ESPN that the bills are going to trade with somebody to. The whole thing is a little bit reminiscent. Again, it's not everybody, but for me, it's reminiscent of all the times the bills got mocked a running back, right? Travis ETN, Breece Hall over the years. It was, they'll take Bijan Robinson before Bijan was going to go as high as he did. And we had a lot of conversations when Devin single Terry's the back and before James Cook really has his breakout. It seemed everybody just kept wanting to give the bills a running back. And we would always talk about other needs, like needs on the defense, needs at receiver needs on the offensive line. So I, we never really found out about that because that's a conversation that's a little bit similar to the one we just had about receiver. Like ETN never made it to them. We never had to find out if they would have taken him or not. There's a couple of different times where the guys they got linked to a bunch of times were off the board. So we never find found out. So anyway, and I think I'm bouncing a little bit, but to go back to mezzedore, I think that the Tampa Bay's in a situation. They don't care about the age because they got to win now or they're all going to get fired. So they got to figure out a way to get the best players in there. You know, so, so back to this, what's more likely the bills trade up in the first round into the top 15 or they take a corner? What do you think's more likely? How do you get in the top 15 without a two? I think that's tough. Yeah. I think that's tough. I find the bills trade to the top 10. It costs them a first. If you feel like that's more likely because they have the first. I think it's more, I think it's more likely that they trade into the top 10 and they stick and pick a corner. Yeah. Yeah. I only asked that to kind of drive home how really crazy this all sounds. The idea of taking a corner. Yeah. I think I think it would be more logical to me for Brandon being to leverage the 20 27 first round pick to some team that is inevitably going to be wanting a quarterback to give them that ammunition and then for him to also get into the top 10 and get like a legit big time prospect. Then it would be that he just sits there and picks avion terrell to be the third corner for the next three seasons. Not happening. Can I give you an absolutely crazy idea? Oh, Weston writes in, you know, to make Jeremy happy with the ninth pick. The chiefs take carnal Tate Ohio State. Here it is. I've got it. I've seen the future. The Keon worthy trade came with a condition that down the line, they have to trade again. So the bills trade up to nine and take somebody that can't city gives them. No, probably that probably these teams that traded in the draft a couple of times before the Holmes trade is a bills chiefs trade. And then the worthy trade that the third times the charm they do for one more. We unlocked on NFL scouting today. We talked about the dream first round pair for Kansas City. They pick what is a nine and somewhere is a 30. I can't remember what the other pick is. Yeah, it's 30 right? They the Rams. Yeah, the Rams first the Rams pick. That's right. So and Kyle, he said carnal Tate at nine would be their dream first pick because. Like look at this. Look at this receipt this group of receivers like their most important guys in the past. Again, Travis Kelsey and Rishi Rice are super vulnerable. Right. Like and then you're talking about like more specialized players and Xavier worthy and Tyquan Thornton. You getting a differentiating the skill sets a little bit more. I think is really important for them. And then I think carnal Tate gives them the verticality, the possession style role that they're looking for. And so I don't know if they will, but I think Tate if he makes it to nine would make a ton of sense for Kansas City. So let's hope that doesn't happen. Well, I can't remember who it was. But since we're talking mock drafts, it was NFL dot com and their latest mock draft had us and it was that we were actually in the headlines about bills getting a gift at 26. And it was it was Tyson from Arizona State falling to that spot and we got him. Yeah. Nick Schuch's latest mock draft at NFL dot com. The headline was bills get the steal of the draft Jordan Tyson 26. So let me ask you to let me ask you to this. I'm sorry. I'm cutting you off. I'm sorry. I apologize. My dream is rude. Concepts the owner Tyson at 26. Concepts you know, yeah, concept. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, I have it was just flat out better prospect. Okay. Tyson's exciting. I like a lot about Tyson and the guy I've compared him to not like necessarily skill set. But for me, I wonder if he's not going through the Luther Burton arc, which is you come into the year. You're supposed to be the best receiver. It doesn't exactly go that way. So people wonder about you. There's this weird thing and Joe, I wonder what you think about this like as you know, someone that does scouting. It's always you're supposed to go in a linear way, right? Every year over year over year getting better. And if you have a bad senior season or a bad year before you get drafted that can ding your stock. And then when you rebound like Luther Burton appeared to with Chicago, it's like, well, obviously he just, you know, he had a year. The offense changed. Things didn't go well. And I'm always a little bit. I've got an eye for that for a lot of receiver prospects. It's not always going to go in a linear fashion perfectly for every one of these prospects. You're going to have a down year. It's going to hurt your stock and then you're going to get right back where you should be. That's JSN, by the way. That's JSN in a very big way. I think in a lot of times though, the NFL is generally aware of that. Like if you get a chance to see some of their preseason rankings, which nobody's really supposed to see what Bletsoe and the National Scouting Service that supply this stuff. Like that's before the season happens. And I'm always pretty surprised by the guys that are towards the top of that list that maybe don't go out and have the season that they're supposed to. They still wind up getting drafted pretty high. And I'm not always like at the top of the draft, but there is something to that where I think that a lot of the evaluation happens before the season. And then I don't know how much of it truly changes. Now there's going to be huge risers for sure. But that, I mean, even Luther Burton went to the top of the second round, right? I was going to say, as we just mentioned, Burton, I realized that that's the guy was the most, you know, a little bit like, I know you're not going to do it, but you should take Luther Burton here. But you know what? I would have, I would have fought you on that and I might have been wrong. So I thought he was a dump and run guy. So I'll take it now there. It's only one. See where it goes. We'll see what we'll see where it goes. See the very, very promising rookie season. All right. When we get back, we got to get into the biggest controversy to hit the bills and Joe Brady this off season. Of course, we're talking about Vrabel gate. Mike Vrabel crumples up the name plate. How dare you do that to our logo? That's a funny story. Let's see what Jerry thinks about it. You're going to think, you know, Mike Vrabel does that to your name plate at, at a coach's breakfast. I want to find out what the big O is going to do in that spot because Vrabel likes to put his hands on people. We're seeing that at these pro days too. Get to that coming up here on the bill squad show. This episode of bill squad is brought to you by Robin Hood. What if sports were traded like markets? Back here on the bill squad show Jeremy white, Joe Marino and the big O Jerry Ostrowski. Of course, big controversy guys. We got it from the coaches meeting the big bad bully that is Mike Vrabel crumpled up Joe Brady's name plate and they all had a laugh about it. So you buy that it was just fun good fun. Are we got a problem here with Mike Vrabel? It's coaching hazing man. Vrabel went over and took a pee on on on on our tree. You know, that's all he did. He just was doing what what dogs been doing for years man just trying to establish his dominance. But no, just you can be look, you can be a meathead and be intelligent. Vrabel is a very smart meathead, but he is a meathead at heart. I kind of think I'm hoping anyway it seems this way that Joe Brady is a little bit, a little bit of a meathead himself that saw it's also smart. So those two probably will get along really, really well. And who knows I imagine they probably been hanging out and hanging out in coaches meetings all week. I wouldn't doubt it. I just think it's a really weak crumple. You know, I saw the picture of the finished product and you know if you're going to crumple a name plate crumple a name plate man it's like it's what did you barely squeeze it and like you had second thoughts or you put it down like if I'm going to smash up someone's name plate it's going to you're going to know that I did it. I look at this stuff so much differently than the most people I think it's. It's ridiculous to me it's nothing but pro wrestling is all it is it's so it's it's scripted scripted angst. We all love scripted angst right. That's all it is. Jerry you're talking like you've been part of a wrestling match before. I might have been. I might have been. I might have been. I might I might have I might I might have been in wrestling. Yeah. Maybe I've seen it myself you know. I tend to agree with you Jerry about Vrable being like he's got this identity of like the meathead because he's a former lineman and he's out there with these prospects getting his arms up testing these guys himself right. Show me your stuff show me your stuff he's trying to anchor in but I I don't hate him at all. I like him a lot. I think he's a good coach and the reality is every good coach. Did they do anything that's not calculated in some way. You could say this is a very playful thing like you know hazing is a great the great the right word on it like a little initiation like yeah welcome to the party. Nice nice to have you here you know like maybe with Sean McDermott Vrable would have not at the same relationship maybe he would have thought if he did that those two would have been on the mat wrestling for the next five minutes you know might have been more intense. I can't but now we heard reports that McVay picked up the tab. I'm surprised it didn't make Joe Brady pick up the tab new guy coaches dinner. The new guy pick it up McVay's got that Super Bowl money man he's been extended high. They got all kinds of cheese and he's all right. You'll be all right for all I know McVay might be Iron Man and we just don't know it. I did. I did like seeing you know again like we're digging through the those owners meetings. I did like seeing when Jay Glazer has his NFL coaches called it the day drinking event. I did like seeing the table that Joe Brady was at. He's there with McVay and Shanahan and Liam Cohen and the floors. It's a cool kids table. Joe Brady is at the cool kids table. Right. That's the cool kids table. You can get all the inside information as well if you wanted to you just got to have a day drinking party and throw a big event. You think Sean Payton would come to my day drinking party. I don't know. But he was at that table which was also hilarious. He was he was he was talking loud enough so that anybody can hear him to prove just how smart he was. He was he was old and court. It was it was wonderful. Could you imagine Sean Payton at that event. Oh yes. Walking around with his chest out thinking he's the coolest guy on Earth with a couple of Johnny Walker blacks in him. Oh you know he's just spewing. Dude I I had I was in a press box one time with Sean Payton and he was it was in between he's in between years right before he was now the coach of the Broncos and he they were talking about him on on a TV that was in there right. And he was just standing there and like just with a big old grin on his face and then afterwards he was like mouthing off to everyone around him this this guy. You want to talk about ego. I think Sean Payton's probably got the biggest ego in the NFL. Yeah probably. He probably does but he's also done some things earn a little bit as well. I know he probably does. He's still you know there's still some guys and that's what I like about rabble and somebody there's still some coaches that can have fun and not take themselves too seriously and chop it up and have a good time and understand that you know what we're unique. We're doing a job that only you know 32 people in this world can do. Let's enjoy it a little bit instead of being so damn uptight you know all the time which some of these guys are but you know hopefully hopefully you know I want to see Brady hopefully Brady lets it loose a little bit and has a good time with it. Who was McDermott hanging out and I've never seen that type of video come out like who's who's chilling with you know he he took his dessert to the room dude you know that he won he won't hang out. He grabbed the batter like there's one other reasons. Yeah there was like what who's the other guy like him in the league like if you can think of one like one other dude like Sirianni. But really different though. Yeah really him and Andy Reid went and had a cheeseburger then went to the room. McDermott and Andy the cheeseburger. You know who you know who strikes me as McDermott now is the Dolphins coach Jeff Hathley like he's like everything he said when he got to Miami was a lot about you know not that every coach isn't about culture but he just struck me as a defensive coach who's going to you know I'm my job here is to make this organization not a laughing stock anymore and I just got such McDermott vibes from him and everything that they decided to do right when they got in there in Miami so. Which is probably what they need. You know you know McDermott would hang out with McDonald McDonald seems like he's wound a little tight. Yeah good call him and McDonald probably got together and had a grease board in the room and we're drawing up zone coverages and zone blitzes and so. Wish he would have taken better notes. Well maybe they could have got a couple of their players that have been a little bit easier. Plans and yet people that can execute them right. Yeah it is of course we're going to find out about Joe Brady as a coach as a coach and play caller at the same time like we've known him as a play caller as a coach and play caller and CEO and voice of the team and like the job gets a lot bigger and you know the bills say they hired him because of his CEO like presence. He's going to have to balance that with how mad he gets or how much emotion he shows like you think about the coaches that are on the sideline that don't show a lot of emotion it's almost it's almost a skill. You become that coach on the sideline on camera at all times it's different than being up in the booth right with Ken Dorsey's meltdown was famous we saw Brady a couple times in the booth with a meltdown. I'm thinking of John Shire when you can't hit that three. Do you see his face. Yeah. Look at the clock. No reaction. You know like no matter what happens when you are the head coach that reaction meter comes way down in the moment. I think it's gonna be a work in progress for Brady. I think he's gonna wear it for sure. I think he's very I think he's very genuine. I think he's very authentic. And I imagine this being a journey for him and obviously if he hits the if he hits it hot out of the gate and he has a ton of success it'll probably be a big part of who he winds up being you know pretty you know just out there what you see is what you get but if it gets goofy you know you don't want to do you don't want to the air and Glenn mean you know what I mean you score that touchdown and you're doing that weird walk and then you wind up winning two games. Hopefully that's not where this goes but you know Joe Brady is the weather and so put the ball down and let's see what happens. Well he did. Go ahead Jerry. I was gonna say when I when I use that example Jeremy I always like to say like when Jay Wright went boom and turned around and started walking to the other coach with Chris Jenkins hit the shot against UNC but that's just me as a Nova fan but I think the hardest part from Brady is going to be the when they lose the winds are easy. I thought McDermott did a hell of a job when the bills had disappointing losses and stuff and I know he had practice. Go into those press conferences and handle them in a really good way. That's that's going to be when he he earns his stripes and learns things is how do I handle you know the losses or consecutive losses because that's not something we've seen a bunch of consecutive losses and buffalo to put finer points on this like there'll be the offense isn't doing things well how does he handle it then there's what if the defense lets him down in a certain game like that I know that's he's now the head coach of everything but I'm thinking back to the again when he he spoke with Lance Lysowski the Buffalo news one of the quotes in there from Brady. It's almost like he's talking about the Houston game. Do you remember was it the Houston game guys where Josh sits down and says what are we doing. Yep. Yeah. I think it was Houston. Yeah. Brady used that phrase. He kind of he said in the sit down with Lance he said you know there'll be times out there I'm mad. There'll be times where I'm mad at Josh and I'm saying what are we doing. Almost kind of prepping us for. Yeah. Like don't freak out if you see that he's kind of creating this idea that that will be normal between Josh and I you might see that I don't want you to think everything's falling apart if you see that. He gets really into it in the K Adams interview it's like a 12 minute interview he did this week at the owner's meeting so I'd encourage everyone to go check it out. He talks about that specifically and even uses that phrase what are we doing like you're going to see these things because she was kind of probing on what you're going to be like on the sideline and pretty much he's saying you know I'm going to be like on the sideline and pretty much he's saying you know I'm pretty animated and you know I'm going to celebrate things and there's going to be frustrations and people will get a real look at our relationship with Josh but you know we're on the same page we've talked about how we're going to be to each other and accountability and all those types of things but yeah he used that phrase for sure in that moment and I've listened to every press conference that Joe Brady's had since he's been with the bills I listen to every press conference from every player and every coach it's available to listen to. And what I will say like when you listen to him as the offensive coordinator he's really boring really really boring where it's just anything that goes well that he's asked about he talks about you know how good how good the players are and how much better they make him look and when something goes wrong he says you know what that starts with me I have to coach better I have to have a better plan I have to make sure everyone's you know on the same page so he's very much that type of guy. And so I think once there's going to come a point here where football is happening again and I think he's going to become really really boring with how he how he addresses things I think this is like honeymoon phase people need to get to know me I need to get in the good graces right I want to control narratives which is you know the big PR thing that every coach does this time when they're when they're hired but once once football starts happening I think he's going to be button up and boring. I remember what I told you guys it's a lonely place the corner office. There's a moat there's a moat around it there's barbed wire all of a sudden people don't want to talk to you they don't look you in the eye. It's a different place over there man. Yeah, we'll see no adversity they'll just they'll just be no adversity that's it just just win every game just just right right through when I'm all. All right, your takes we wrap things up with your takes couple around the NFL bits as well with the Raiders making what I think is a pretty smart move for them they made a signing today that should Fernando Mendoza their number one pick but drop us a line hit like hit subscribe and if you want us to address any individual player in the upcoming draft or any idea drop a comment and we've got some time to get to those coming up here on the bill squad show. Final segment bill squad quick programming note for everybody. Next week we will have just one show and we are planning our first full mock draft so next week only one we've got some scheduling stuff to kind of work out so apologies won't bring you the two shows. So here we are three three weeks from the draft today our next show. You'll find it same place you do in your podcast feed here on the YouTube channel as well next week a full on mock draft like four or five rounds of suit we ultimately arrive at but excited to do that go through each and every pick and see you know are we going to trade down are we going to find our way to KC Concepción who by this time next week will be mocked to go seventh overall. I'm sure he keeps moving up the board. Yeah. So so anyway. All right some other NFL news and notes. The Falcons have released new uniforms and they look exactly the same as Falcons uniforms that you've seen your entire life. They did not need to make an announcement. Right. The other Falcons part of this is former Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins has signed a deal with the Raiders. So the Raiders bring him in and this likely means they don't have to go to Fernando Mendoza right away who they can pick first overall and you get cousins and Mendoza and a Clint Kubiak offense with the Falcons. Should the Raiders will the Raiders be somewhat of a real team next year. Taking some good steps in that direction and obviously they keep a heck of a player in Max Crosby that you know I don't at the end of the day you could probably just be happy that you have Max Crosby but they have come out with a lot of that they didn't really want to play a young quarterback right away. Obviously Kirk Cousins. Completely takes away that necessity to force Mendoza in and then I also think about Mendoza and a very unique personality. Well, if there's anybody that's in the NFL that's in the NFL that's in the NFL that's in the NFL that's in the NFL. So I think that's a good thing to do. I think that's a good thing to do. I think that's a good thing to do. I think that's a good thing to do. I think that's a good thing to do. I think that goes in a very unique personality. Well, if there's anybody that think he can vibe with it's probably Kirk Cousins. And so I could see that being a really beneficial not just player but the personality and how they'll mesh together in the room and Kirk knows the deal. Everybody knows that they're going to pick a number one that won't be a surprise where I think it was very much caught off guard with the Michael Pettix pick. I think it actually kind of works with for the Raiders and then obviously that the way the contract was presented is really, really goofy. But shout out to Kirk Cousins for once again getting a fully guaranteed deal. Did you see what he did by signing that deal? I saw the numbers on it. He has surpassed Tom Brady in career earnings. Yeah. It was in like a $10 million deal and that lamb is paying like 1.53 million of it or something like that. Yeah, it's like an $11 million that can be up to 20 something like that. I think it's a very modest salary, very like a good bargain for a few of the Raiders. No, I think it's a great move for the Raiders because I don't think Mendoza is ready to play when he this isn't more. I think a lot of this is more indicative about the state of Mendoza and then it is anything else. I know he's going number one overall. I don't think he's a number one overall pick. I've said this many times. I really kind of don't. I understand quarterbacks have a, you know, an ability to go higher. I don't know if he's a first round pick. That's my opinion, but, you know, I know that Cubiak's come out and said that they don't like to play young guys and we'll see how this goes. But I think it's really smart by the Raiders to bring cousins in and let Mendoza try to learn because what do you take of this Joe? Let me ask you this. What do you take of him at pro day again, like the combine not running, not jumping, not doing anything. He was what is he 53 or 52 or 55 throws today? The pro day yesterday. What do you make of it? He says I'm here to throw footballs, man. Right. I can jump. What are you hiding? That he's probably doesn't jump very high and run very fast. I can watch a tape and tell you that, you know, I know that was a, that was a smart Alec facetious comment. Oh yeah. I know that's amazing coming from me, but you know, yeah, I agree with you that Fernando Mendoza is not the best prospect in the draft. I do think he's a first round quarterback. Who is the best prospect in the draft? Jerry, regardless of position, who's the best prospect in this draft? Well, in my estimation, me, if you're asking me between two people, guy named Vega Vega at Penn State, because I'm going to give my love to my own lineman. I really like sunny styles, man. I really like sunny styles. I know, I know from, I listened to you talk about them. So I went into the in depth. He's, he's a cat. That is a cat. Like, like that's a half the field shut down type dude. Like you guys go worry about the other half of the field. I got this half of the field. You won't convince me he's not the best player in this draft. Just my goodness. Just pure just every just everything size, athleticism, the way he plays. And so I do, I do the entire evaluation, right? And then I go back and do the research because I don't want it to influence anything that I do. Like just let me watch the film and I'll find out how big you are and how fast you are and you know what your background is. This guy just started playing linebacker in 2024. Jeremy, if you haven't watched him, I would, I would. I have a little bit. I was going to really watch them and studied them and then Joe started talking about them like this and I'm like, well, I got to go and I go, I was like, whoa, it's different. It's different. Different. Didn't Joe, was it you who said how he got the nickname sunny? I don't know the answer. You don't know. Okay. Let's do it in somebody else. Like I'm listening to podcasts on my draft podcast. I've got you going, you know, these player evaluations. I think he got his nickname because as a child, he was a hothead and his son started his father started calling him sunny because it was inspired by sunny Corleone from the Godfather. So that's how we became sunny styles because he was like a hotheaded kid. Yeah. His father nicknamed him sunny between the ages of three and five inspired by sunny Corleone because of his quick, quick temper. His name is Alex. Yeah. I just, I'm learning this all for the first time. I hear sunny styles. I think of like WWE intercontinental champion sunny styles taking on the undertaker. Yeah. The wrestling references are not stopping from from Jerry lately. But sunny styles is a wrestling name, a pro wrestling name. It's a name. It's probably actually sunny styles is probably actually a female wrestler's name. But that's besides. I think about funny like draft stuff. I feel like if I, if I was a GM, this is why I could never be a GM. I'd be a GM like sunny styles. Where we got him again. Our final ranking. He's seventh on the big board. I'm like, yeah, but his name is sunny styles and that's pretty cool. Oh, or spots just cause his name is sounds like he's going to wreck offenses. Right. That's like, that's like big citrus. He's probably, yeah, he probably was like really a preferred free agent, but his name. So nicknamed so cool. Mid round. He's like a fourth round pick. Absolutely. Bump. Bump a fifth round guy up and he's got a good nickname. What was the name? It was shot wild goose got drafted. You know, it sounds like he did in the NFL. What was the one shot? Oh, Max ultimate. I forgot about pork chop from Mississippi State. Guard Mississippi State. Yeah. Chop will make dude. You know, big citrus got to get drafted by the Brown, the Broncos, right? You know this and they wear the all orange uniforms and the big citrus is playing those. Come on, man. That would be a marketing dude. We got to put card comment here about sunny styles. Like, how, how, how, how much of a dude is he unicorn player? According to bills fan here. Would you trade two firsts to get them? Um, it's a 26 and next year's first round pick after I sat here for the last several weeks and told you that I don't believe in trading up for anything. That's not a quarterback. And if I needed a quarterback, you got me thinking a little bit. Yeah. I've got to be thinking a little bit. If nothing else, it's like, it's, it's a, it's a compliment. It's context to how much you like the guy. You're like, you break rules for this player. It's different, man. He's different. Yeah. It's 21. He turns 22 in November. It's like watching high school film and you see a kid that's like a D one prospect. It sticks out like that. It's just pops and these are college. These are highest paid FBS and I L players in the country and they still pops like that. It's wild. Wild. My first tape I watched was the Indiana game and I thought, I thought I mistakenly put on the highlight reel because he just made every play. I'm like, this is stupid. This is absolutely stupid. And then his brothers and his brother in the draft too, or is he still back in Ohio State another year? I think he's back. I think he's athletic, but I don't know that there's much regard for him as a prospect. He got some name like Tracy or John or something. Lorenzo. I don't know. Lorenzo styles. No, that's his dad's name. No, his son's, it's his brother's Lorenzo style. Junior. The big thing about this is we keep him away from the jets at two. Please, our Velary, please pick our recent status. I don't know, man. I think, I think he's a souped up Jack Campbell who of course, Aaron Glenn had with the lions and he's souped up the Mario Davis who I love Jack Campbell. I love Jack. Yeah, me too. I remember a lot of people were just ready to burn the ships. If we, if the bill, Jerry, that Campbell, don't get me going. Okay, go ahead. Don't give me going. Tell me that he's a, a stiff linebacker that you can pick on day two. Yeah, everybody's working. Yeah. Okay. I got, listen, I have my whiffs. I have my whiffs, but that folks was not one of them. I'll watch him terrorize us from some other team. He's about to get paid, man. He's a, he'll be a $20 plus million a year linebacker, Jack Campbell. Yeah. Stiff guy from Iowa. Not very good. Stiff guy from Iowa. Dude, you'd hate me if I was a GM, Jeremy, you'd hate me. Why? Cause I'd have, I'd have Iowa guys all over my roster. All tight end offense. All guys all over the place. I might, I might go 14 personnel. Can you go for me first? No, you call it Oh five. I don't think math works. Five linemen, five tight ends in one quarterback. Oh five personnel debuted. How do you match it? How do you match it? You can't put any corn empty, empty with nothing but tight ends. Yeah. You called the big O offense. There it is. Oh, the O five personnel. Dude, I love Kirk Ferrance. Love Kirk Ferrance to death. I'm an Iowa guy through and through man. Love them. Is there, is there a tight end coming out this year from a tight end? You, they got one or no? No, but they got another stereotypical AJ F and that's the coming out. Maybe not quite as athletic. When, when don't they, there's, they have a couple of offensive linemen for sure. Some randomly fast receiver that never made a play in college and they score three points a game. Yeah. Some bad quarterback they're going to pick because he played in a pro style offense. And some mid round running back. Don't speak of Mark. Don't speak of Mark Garnowski like a once great, a once great Jack rabbit from South Dakota state. You're not disparages about that punter Taylor. As a Tory Taylor went to the Bears. He's a good player. You got to be in an Iowa offense. You got a good punter. Right. Well, it's essentially that recruiting efforts. If I was, if I was a coach, I'd, I'd get a punter from somewhere in the Dakotas or Iowa or whatever, because the weather is horrible as well. So that's true. I just picture recruiting, recruiting the punter. You're the coach like, listen, we're going to need you a lot. The opportunities will be in bounding. You're going to play. You are going to kick. You know me though. I'm an FCS stand, man. I love, I love my FCS players. I don't know why. I mean, maybe because my kid coach is there, but it's just me. Well, again, gentlemen, thank you. Congratulations to Josh and Haley on the birth of the baby girl. It's great news. Go Sabres. Look at a clinch to playoff spot. And you know, the next month for them should be really exciting as well.
