Summary

In this Second Date Update segment, Alicia reconnects with Liam after standing him up at a $1,900 fine dining date two years ago to create content for his bad-date Instagram channel. When she calls to apologize and offer to pay him back, the conversation reveals unresolved tension, failed reconciliation attempts, and Liam's ultimate rejection of a second date opportunity.

Insights
  • Social media content creation can incentivize deceptive behavior in dating, with participants willing to sabotage genuine connections for engagement metrics
  • Two-year delays in accountability don't guarantee forgiveness; unresolved hurt from past betrayals can override apologies and financial restitution
  • Asymmetrical expectations in dating (who plans, who pays) remain contentious even when one party attempts to reverse traditional gender roles
  • Public radio interventions in personal disputes can escalate tension rather than resolve it, especially when one party feels ambushed
  • Financial exploitation in dating contexts (unpaid bills, split payments) creates lasting trust damage that transcends the original incident

You know, sometimes it takes a little while to realize your wrongs. And in this case today, it only took her two years. Yeah, that's it. Hey, it's Brickett Jeffrey with your Second Date Podcast, and it is brand new today. And I think you're going to enjoy it going into your weekend. Oh, yeah. Anyway, I mean, some people in the comments enjoy things. Some people don't. Yeah, no. Are we going to read a complaint or a happy comment today, Alexis? We have a happy comment. Ava said, I can't live without you guys, bro. I'm a 14-year-old living in L.A. And when I go to camp, I cry because I miss listening. I don't have cellular data there. Well, you showed it. It's camp. Like, go live in nature for a week. How dare they take away your phone? Put your phone down. I'll be the mother in the room. Which one of these trees has a Wi-Fi signal? Yeah. All right. Hey, for 14-year-olds everywhere, here's your brand new second date update. Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Second date update. Brooke, have you ever gone out on a date and afterwards thought, you know, I probably should have been nicer to that guy? Why are you laughing like that? No, I actually have never thought that. That's very funny, Jeffrey. That's a good point. Women don't make mistakes. I always forget that. Yeah. Why would you be mean to somebody on a date? Why would you agree to go out if you're just going to be rude the whole time? These are philosophical questions that I don't have the tools to answer. But one of our listeners says that she does kind of regret what happened on a first date that she went on. And there's some very unique circumstances surrounding it. I don't know everything, but I know I can't wait to hear the whole story. So let's welcome Alicia to the show. Hey, Alicia. Hi. Oh, God. These are the type of dates we love to hear about. Just ones that are train wrecks, Alicia. I'm really sorry about that. And you're self-aware. You're coming in like, I messed up. Is that what I'm kind of feeling? I don't know that she said that. Yeah. Maybe you just feel that and you actually did nothing wrong. We need to hear the story first. Yeah. Maybe you need to hear the story. Oh, okay. All right. All right. That's awesome. Let's start with the guy. What's his name? Okay. His name's Liam. Okay. How'd you meet him? I met him on Instagram, I guess. Okay. But this date happened two years ago, first of all. But hear me out. What? He has a channel on Instagram sort of where he posts about bad dates usually. Oh. And I messaged him and I was like, I want to show you what a good date can be. Dude, this is genius on his part. I mean, honestly, the best use of reverse psychology ever. Yeah, it worked, I guess. I guess. Why do you say that? Well, he wrote back, and he seemed like a really nice guy. And I was like, let me take you out. Let me do a date for you and show you what a good date was. I have never in my life had a girl take me out. I know. Why did I meet? Alexis is shaking her head like this is a bad, bad idea. No, never. Never. Oh, my God. I love planning dates. Okay, not on the first date. Yes, on the first date. That's a good point. I would like to be in control the first date, actually. I took out my husband on the first date. No way. I planned the whole date. We went go-kart racing. We went to a brewery. It was great. That's awesome. I want to talk to you about your date instead of her now. I know. Her husband. What did you do? What did you plan? Okay, so I planned this, like, incredible fine dining evening. Ooh. Oh, wow. We did like the tasting menu, you know, so I contacted the restaurant beforehand and they knew like what I wanted. And so like everything was already decided and done. You know, just a good experience. Like you're saying, like it never happens for the guy. So I was like, you know, you've got all these bad dates. I'm going to do this. And then he found out what restaurant it was And he was like oh that very expensive for a first date And I was like it my treat I want to do this Okay Wow That awesome I impressed honestly It's a lot for someone you don't even know deserves it, no offense, but like, you post bad dates and you don't know he's not the problem. To call a restaurant, whether it's like set up a flower, like that extra little bit goes so far. Everyone wants to feel special. Absolutely. They said chivalry's dead, but that's not true. It just swapped genders. Yeah, women are just dead. It's so nice to hear. There you go. Amazing. Well, hold on. Oh, sorry. I mean, what could go wrong, though? Yeah. Well, mid-date, the thought crossed my mind, like, this would be really good for his social media if I left, if I, like, ended the date. Because I was thinking it would boost all of his likes and follows. I'm hoping you said this idea out loud to him. Like, in the middle, you're like, hey, it's not working out. I gotta go. No, no. Like, hey, let's create some content. I'll pretend to leave. Oh, I see. Yeah, yeah, but let's still keep hanging out. Yeah. Yeah. That would have been good, probably, but no. Oh, no. Yeah, I was a little tipsy from all the wine. It was like a different wine pairing with everything. And I was like, I have to go to the bathroom. And I went, and in the bathroom, I was like, I'm going to leave. And then he's going to post. And then I'm going to pay him back. I was going to, you know, send him whatever the cost was. Because you were leaving him with a check, too? Yeah. Oh. at a fine dining place? He just handed the card to the server when he's not looking. Is there an award for the dumbest idea out there? Because this is it. I was thinking it needed to be real. He needed to have the real reaction. He needed to actually be heartbroken. I mean, literally. He lifted this man up so high, and he was feeling so good, only to let him crash and burn. I would watch that video for sure. So did the video go up? It did get posted, and I was going to make it all right after that. But he was ruthless. He was so mean and rude. What did you expect? Yeah, but he talked about things that weren't true, like my appearance and my smell. He really went for it. Okay. Well, did you at least pay him back for the meal? No, because I got so pissed off about how rude he was about me. Alicia. It's been almost two years now, and I feel so bad about it. And that's why I'm thinking, like, maybe this is the way to get back in with him and say, like, I'm sorry I did that. And let me pay you back for that. And then also let me take you out for a real date. What are you going to say when he says, why did it take you two years? Yeah, to feel bad. Well, I've got to say, you said that my hair smelled like dog food. That hurt. That's an obvious result of what was happening. Yeah, Alicia, honestly, I don't even know if I want to make this call for you because my biggest fear is what if he picks up and he says yes to a date and then you do it to him all over again a second time so he can have even more content. Would you do that to him and stand him up a second time? Probably not. What? Probably. You are not a social media manager. Okay. Stay out of it. But can you, I mean, that would be. No. No. We don't want to imagine. We probably want to see one good date after two years of concert. Yes. Okay. Well, let's find out how this goes. I can't believe we're doing this, but we're going to call this poor guy. Oh, no. And offer to send him out on another date with the woman who ditched him two years ago. Oh, no. Well, at least he'll have an opportunity to air how he really feels on the radio. Oh, yeah. We'll get what brand of dog food. It smelled like in your hair right after this with your second date update. Just hold on. Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Second date update. The word of the day is regret. Because our listener Alicia feels bad about a date she went on two years ago. And she should. With a guy who has an Instagram channel about going out on bad dates. His name's Liam. So she wanted to take him to a fine dining establishment. establishment oh really treat him yeah make him feel special she felt so terrible about all the horrible dates he's been on but in the middle of it she had this genius idea to help him with his content and his followers why not ditch him mid-date and leave him with the entire bill yeah that she promised to pay for to begin with right yeah so he would have a great news story to tell. Perfect. Now that actually happened and she was planning on paying him back until his video review came out and it was so scathing she got offended. Shocking. So decided he doesn't need that money. It's not worth it and it's taken her two full years to be the bigger person and say you know what I just need to say I'm sorry and actually take him out on an honest real date this time. I'm scared. He's probably going to appreciate the I'm sorry. I hope so, yeah. Yes, and I believe she's actually going to follow through with a full date the second time. That part, he'd be an idiot to say yes to, but sure. I have faith in you, Alicia. You're going to be our champion today, right? Yes, it's going to be a real date this time. Keep in mind that you are over it after two years. He still may not be. Who knows how hard it stung? That's a good point. Or he's going to be so thankful for you for providing the best content his channel has ever seen. He's going to cry. I mean, is it bad that I kind of secretly want him to thank me? Yes. Oh, do not say that. Pretty bad. It's not bad that it's a secret, though. The fact that you're keeping it secret, that's nice. Keep it that way. You will not get a thank you. Okay. Oh, my God. Okay, call him. I'm ready. All right. Oh, man. I don't know if we are, but we're going to do it. Here we go. Hello? Hey, is this Liam? Yes. Hey, man, thanks for picking up. You're on a radio show right now. We're called Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. Yeah, hi, Liam. Trying to collab, bro. Oh, how did you get my number? Did you guys hit up my socials or something? No. Not quite. We have a connection with a fan of yours, though, that wanted us to reach out to you. No way. Yeah Yes way A fan that you know kind of intimately because you went on a date with her two years ago A woman named Alicia Alicia. What? A fan? She's not a fan. That is not a good way to describe her. She certainly is a fan. She is rooting for you and your channel to go viral. That's true. And so she reached out to us to do this segment. It's called the Second Date Update. And if we're not in your algorithm on socials, rude. You really are prime. To be fair, you're probably bigger than we are. Oh, Alicia. Wait, what? She reached out to you? Yes. So, like I said, this segment is called a second date update. And she feels really bad about how your date went all that time ago. Yeah. And I don't know if you remember it fully because it's been so long. Oh, you've probably put it out of your mind. on purpose. What do you mean if I don't remember it? I got stuck with a $1,900 bill. $1,900? It was one of those restaurants. I didn't even know restaurants could have bills that big. $1,900? Hold on. Let me see if I got this straight. She's reaching out to you to get a second date with me? Oh, wow. We didn't know that. We're not going that far yet, but she's reaching out to us because she feels horrible about her behavior that day. And we would hate to, like, re-dredge up what happened, but we would like to hear your side of the story, get, like, the full scope of what went down. Because I am in shock when you said $1,900. Yeah. I got stuck with a $600 bottle of wine. Why would you pick a $600 bottle of wine? She picked it. She picked it. Oh, my gosh. Okay. Well, she does have good taste in wine. That's clear. But it is a little expensive. I want to know, like, your mindset going into this date, because she set it up as she was going to be this savior that was going to rescue you from this, like, long list of terrible dates you had been on. I didn't even want to go out on this date. She insisted. I mean, it was such an expensive, luxurious place, fine dining. I didn't feel comfortable on the first date, but I said, you know what? She picked it. It was her idea. And she told me she was going to cover the bill for this date. She said that. Oh, that's right. Yeah. We heard that, too. I don't know that if I were you, I don't know that I'd ever be able to trust a woman on a date again. I mean, we thought that it was pretty cold what she did. But is any part of you just a little bit thankful for the content that she gave you for your channel? Just a little bit. Bro, are you kidding me? $1,900? I'm just asking the question. Probably didn't even make $1,900 off that post. Yeah. No chance. All right. Like $100 maybe. That's terrible. It's fair to still be upset two years later. We totally understand where you're coming from. Oh, man. That was probably the worst day of your life. Yeah. It was. Thanks for bringing it up again. Can I hang up now, guys? Almost. There's just one more thing that I need to tell you, Liam. Oh, it's going to get worse. Actually, it could get better. This could be your chance to say what you need to. Because the way that this segment works is we have Alicia waiting on hold on the other line listening to this conversation so she can jump in and talk to you. Wait, what? She's here right now? Yeah. Ready to apologize, according to her. Yes, yes, and yes. Let's see. Alicia? Alicia? Hi. Hi, Liam. Pretty chipper. Coming in all sweet. Are you joking right now? Oh, my God. I know. I know. Hear me out. Hear me out. First of all, I didn't know that that bill was that much. I thought it was around like $1,000. Oh, wow. I am sorry for that. Well, if you're so sorry for it, then Alicia, how about you Venmo me right now? $1,900. Apologize. Oh, nice. Yeah, I will. I did. That is a lot more than I had expected, and I'm, like, wondering if maybe. Tell me about it. Tell me about it. I know. I know. I totally get it. I get it. It's just things are a little tight right now. Oh. Could we just split it, maybe? Would you be into that? Split it. That's a nice offer. Oh. This was all your idea. You ordered everything. $600 a wine. You ordered it. Girl, you need to make two payments if you can't make one right now No, I totally get that I understand I do feel like maybe it paid off though Because of the attention you got on social media Oh, did it? I feel like it did Like I followed it It kind of boosted you That's the point, Alicia I don't go on these dates to go get content for social I really wanted to connect and know you better I didn't go on this to learn a $1,900 lesson Oh Okay, I get it. I just was kind of hoping, like, maybe you were going to be like, oh, thank you so much for what you did for my social media. You said it out loud? You said that out loud? I thought it was a secret. Yes. Alicia, are you doing this to rub it on my face? What's wrong with you? Why are you wasting your time on this phone call? Why aren't you stealing someone else's money right now? You're literally losing money right now. No, no, no. I understand. I do. Look, for real, I did want to apologize to you for it. I have no more money. And why I did it. You made me throw it all away, so don't ask that. I can't tell. I don't have anything else to tell you. He's so upset he can't even talk. I would be too. Okay, you actually do have one other thing to say to me. Like, I kind of would love an apology for how you talked about me online. It was pretty brutal. Are you joking? It is a little bit fair, at least, because she just apologized for what she did to you. The kind thing. Apparently, you said some heinous things about her hair that she has never recovered from. Dude, that is not even that bad that her hair smelled like dog food. I mean. I could have been a lot meaner than that. Is it dry or wet? It really depends. Definitely can. Is this really happening right now? Is this real life? You know what, guys? I can't waste any more time on this. I got a meeting at 12. I got to go. I can't deal with this. Okay, well, if you got to go, then I got to hurry up and ask you, Liam. We'd love to send you out on another wonderful date with Alicia. And if you agree to do it, we'll pay for it. I can't believe you just said that. Another date with Alicia? On our bill. Liam, I'm serious. I did tell them I want to go out with you again. I want to make it up to you, and I promise I won't leave. Oh, come on. What a sell. Probably won't leave. I won't even go to the bathroom this time. Alicia, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, then I'm an idiot. Go scratch your ass. I don't know if that's right. Is that how the saying goes I don remember that part Liam you just missed out because I was going to pay you half not anymore Really Same way that you were going to stay for the whole date Well, Liam, we'll let you go, man. Thanks for being on the show with us. Sorry about this call. But you're welcome for the content that we just provided to your channel. Thanks for providing us with something. Us too. If you could share the podcast, Liam, that'd be really helpful. Brooke and Jeffrey, make sure you tag us. We will not pay you. Oh, did he hang up? Oh, crap. Brooke and Jeffrey in the morning. In 2023, a story gripped the UK, evoking horror and disbelief. The nurse who should have been in charge of caring for tiny babies is now the most prolific child killer in modern British history. Everyone thought they knew how it ended. A verdict, a villain, a nurse named Lucy Letby. Lucy Letby has been found guilty. But what if we didn't get the whole story? The moment you look at the whole picture, the case collapses. I'm Amanda Knox, and in the new podcast, Doubt, the case of Lucy Letby, we follow the evidence and hear from the people that lived it to ask what really happened when the world decided who Lucy Letby was. Man, Liam had a chance to score himself a date with a quality woman and he totally blew it. Come on. She was even going to pay him. I can never tell if you're sarcastic or delusional. You know, it's like a real fine line between you. I agree. Liam is totally delusional for not agreeing to go on that date and get his money. Nope. He's still holding on to a grudge from two years ago and that, my friend, is not healthy. Oh, come on. I think everybody sees why. I cannot believe she was only going to pay half. She wasn't going to reimburse $2,000 bill Now thanks to Liam and his naughty behavior He's not getting anything And I hope that he learns a lesson from this What's that? I think we know who's to blame for all those bad dates That he talks about on his Instagram channel Common denominator, Liam Okay, that's what Alexis said at the beginning Yeah, I do take that back No, Alexis, we're finally on the same page I'm with you now I don't want to be on Jeff's page You can be on our podcast page, though If you follow us at Brooke and Jeffrey, like, comment, subscribe, and reach out to us if you need help with your dating life.
