Summary

O'Connor & Company discusses Virginia's new gun control legislation that broadly defines assault firearms as any semi-automatic weapon with magazines exceeding 15 rounds, affecting most gun owners. The episode also covers potential conflicts of interest regarding Governor Spanberger's husband's employment at L3 Harris Technologies, which received a $1.2 billion state contract, and reports on California's taxpayer-funded gender-affirming care for undocumented immigrants.

Insights
  • Virginia's assault weapons ban definition has expanded dramatically to encompass nearly all semi-automatic firearms with standard-capacity magazines, effectively criminalizing weapons most law-abiding gun owners currently possess
  • Political messaging around gun control often uses emotionally resonant language like 'weapons of war' while the actual legislative definitions capture common civilian firearms, creating a disconnect between campaign rhetoric and enacted policy
  • Government benefits programs designed for vulnerable populations are being accessed strategically by undocumented immigrants who understand how to navigate social services better than many U.S. citizens
  • State-level economic development awards to defense contractors warrant scrutiny when government officials have direct family employment relationships with the awarded companies
  • Progressive politicians often avoid direct confrontation on controversial policy positions, relying instead on indirect implementation rather than transparent public advocacy

Now on 105.9 FM and streaming worldwide on the WMAL app, O'Connor and Company. WMAL. It's 6.07, good morning. It's O'Connor and Company. On this Thursday, 16th day of April, coming up at 7.05, we're going to speak with the Chairman of the Loudoun County Republican Committee, George Taplan. Talk about a rally this afternoon to vote no on the gerrymandered constitutional amendment, 805 KT McFarland on the blockade situation and the 835 Mercedes Schlapp, who on behalf of CPAC is cosponsoring that vote no rally today. I'll be there too. Today, 4pm in Leesburg, along with Governor Glenn Yonkin and the aforementioned Mercedes Schlapp, 750 Miller Drive, Leesburg, 4pm. 750 Miller Drive, Leesburg, 4pm. Can't wait to see you out there. Bring your very loud voice with you. Larry O'Connor here with Cassie Smedley, who's all reconnected with a microphone working and everything. Good morning, Cassie. Good morning, Larry. Did you think I ran away? Yes, a little bit. I felt kind of abandoned there. I have abandonment issues though. A little bit over it. Good morning. Oh, sorry for bringing that up. We're talking about Virginia and I want to lend your voice to all of this because you of course fled the crime-ridden streets of DC to live in Virginia about a year ago and well now look what's going on. Maybe you're the problem. I'm starting to think that might be the case because you're right, I got like one year being in this red state. We feel so free. It's exciting. Exactly. Exactly. Y'all came crumbling down. Young mother, sometimes professional out there on your own, having to get through because your husband has a job, kids are in daycare, you're heading out and trying to make some bacon yourself and it's nice that you're in a state like Virginia where you can carry a firearm and defend yourself as a vulnerable woman out there with criminals. And now, well, sadly, I think your ability to defend yourself and to utilize your Second Amendment rights are now getting whittled away pretty drastically. Whittled away actually isn't quite right. Abigail Spanberger and the Democrats took a machete to them yesterday. First listen to the philosophy behind the undermining of your Second Amendment rights. This is delegate Dan Helmer who wants to go to Congress right now by the way. He's a Fairfax guy. He's run before. He constantly loses. So now he's helped redraw congressional districts for himself so he can go to Congress. Dan Helmer talking about the gun he used to carry when he were uniform in Afghanistan and how his rights as a soldier are much more important than your rights as a citizen. Listen. This bill is based on a simple premise that weapons similar to those I carried in Iraq and Afghanistan should not be trafficked in our Commonwealth, that our neighbors, our children are not our enemies, that our communities ought not to be treated like war zones. Yeah, that's how they frame these arguments all the time, right? It sounds so reasonable and gosh, he went to West Point so he must know what he's talking about. Yeah, okay. Well that's until Ren Williams, Virginia delegate, actually took issue with the premise and had an exchange with him. Take a listen. I was wondering what exactly the law does say about when somebody can sell a grandfathered firearm. Mr. Speaker, the bill is clear on the transfer, sale, import, export of firearms and all of it and I do encourage the delegates to read the full bill text. Thank you Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, I did read the bill and we got a problem because Mr. Speaker, even though the patron did not answer how you could actually sell or transfer one of these grandfathered weapons, the bill does say how you can do it. It says that you can sell it to a firearms dealer or you can sell it to an out of state individual. Did you know that it is a federal felony for someone from the Commonwealth to sell a firearm to someone who doesn't live in the Commonwealth? Did you know that? Selling also, that can bring up to five years in federal prison. So that's not a good idea. And then this bill right here, this actually makes it a state crime to sell a firearm to a firearm dealer. It says you cannot transfer it to any person and there is no exception to allowing a dealer to purchase a firearm from you. And those firearms are firearms that are defined as assault weapons or an assault firearm. And for those of us who have been reticent to buy onto the whole idea that assault firearms need to be controlled or banned or confiscated by the Democrats, we've always said one thing, please define what an assault firearm is because it's a funny thing. When a firearm is used against you and you're murdered or you're killed by a gun, that gun has suddenly become an assault firearm because the firearm has been used in an assault. So pretty much any gun falls under that description you would think, right? Sure. I mean, just by logic. If you use a gun in an assault, then it's an assault firearm. But so we've all, no, we don't want to ban all guns, just an assault firearm. And you just heard Dan Hilmer, the weapon of war that I carried in Afghanistan has no place on our streets in Virginia and you shouldn't be able to traffic it. You shouldn't be able to. All right, so I've always said, right, define what an assault firearm is. Well, ladies and gentlemen, your governor has now finally defined what an assault firearm is. Now the original language here was this an assault firearm that I'm reading you the original language. She has changed this now. I'll tell you the change in a second. Here's what the original language said. An assault firearm means a semi automatic center fire rifle or pistol which expels single or multiple projectiles by action of an explosion of a combustible material and is equipped at the time of the offense with the magazine, which will hold more than 20 rounds of ammunition or designed by the manufacturer to accommodate a silencer or equipped with a folding stock with a magazine, a folding stock period. That was the old definition. All right. Here's the new definition of an assault firearm. Are you ready for this, Cassie? This is this is what Abigail Spamburger just defined for Virginia as an assault firearm. A semi automatic center fire rifle or pistol with a magazine capacity in excess of 15 rounds. Okay, yeah, explain it to me like I'm not a gun person. I approve of your right to carry one. So what does that mean? So you know, like some guns, you fire a bullet fire around from the gun, and then you have to cock it or, or, you know, re reestablish, right? A semi automatic gun is like pretty much most guns out there where you pull the trigger, one bullet goes out, and then you just pull the trigger again and another bullet goes out. So for every bullet, you pull the trigger, but it automatically resets and has another another round waiting to be fired again. So trigger bullet, trigger bullet, trigger bullet, that's semi automatic, which is basically 98% of all the guns okay that are out there, right? And what they've just defined as an assault firearm is all of those guns that I just described, pull the trigger bullet fires, pull the trigger bullet fires, those guns, rifle or pistol with a magazine capacity in excess of 15 rounds. So basically, any gun that has a magazine that can carry more than 15 rounds is now suddenly an assault firearm. It's thank you for laying it out like that. It's outrageous. It's outrageous. Basically, the gun has to been defined as a an assault gun, an assault firearm based on the capacity of the magazine. If it's if it's more than 15 automatically you now have an assault firearm. I but let me just say this almost every single gun owner in Virginia currently has a gun like that. Sure. That's my understanding of how I picture our family and friends guns. Yes. And yet when they go into these debates, what do they always say the weapon of war, which of course, you're picturing like Rambo out there. Yes, yes, exactly. With a machine gun, with a machine gun where you you pull the trigger and you know, 10 rounds per second. Yeah. No, no, no, that that that's a machine gun. No, semi, that's an automatic firearm, a semi automatic just more on this in a second. I'm speechless and dumbfounded by by I think I could be wrong, but I think Virginia now has more radical gun control laws than Maryland. I'm quite sure. 615 next role with Vernon Davis. I'm your host Vernon Davis. Okay, y'all thank you. Thank you. That's my today. We have each wise through my example on the field off the field during game day in practice. That was one way that I led because then it led to success. Next role isn't about what's next. It's about why they do it. My man, Bobby bones, like I've had a lot of stuff happen bad and good. And so I don't have any fear of mixing it up. That's powerful, man. Next role with Vernon Davis. Follow and listen on your favorite platform. So the purchase, the sale, the possession, the carrying of what they're calling an assault firearm. This is House Bill 217 and Senate Bill 749 prohibits the future sale of certain semi automatic firearms classified as assault weapons. Those are magazines capable of holding more than 15 rounds. That's that's now prohibits the future sale of them, prohibits the private sale of them without background checks. Spam burgers amendments to these gun laws further define which firearms fall under the ban by outlining specific features and configurations of technical change aimed at reducing ambiguity for law enforcement, gun owners and firearm dealers. Oh, yeah, well, it certainly reduces ambiguity. Dan Helmer, the former West Point graduate now running for Congress who crafted all of these is very happy. I'm so excited that with Governor Spanberger, and after seven years of work, we have the first assault weapons ban in the south to make sure that weapons similar to those I carry constantly does that those weapons set. So now it's similar. It used to be the actual guns that I carried in war, which was an absolute lie because those were automatic weapons. Now it's similar. You know, it's true. It is similar. It has a magazine with rounds and you pull a trigger and it fires a bullet that does make it similar to what you carried in Iraq and Afghanistan. There you go. Dan Helmer is now so happy. It had to Stephen Kutowski, who is an expert on gun laws and firearms who pointed out, he says, looks like there's a small language change that actually makes any semi auto that has a magazine capable of holding more than 15 rounds in assault firearm. It's actually a massive expansion of the definition and appears to override the later definitions in the bill. In other words, that was Abigail Spenberger herself lining that out and making the definition very specific. Any semi automatic weapon that has a magazine of more than 15 rounds. It's insane, Cassie, but that's where we are. Insane and reminder, this is not how she campaigned. None of them campaigned. In fact, she campaigned the exact opposite. Oh, oh, can I tell you what her argument will be? Oh, no, no, I never I never misrepresented. I always said I wanted an assault firearm ban. I always wanted to ban assault weapons. Assault weapons need to be banned. The problem is up until yesterday, we never knew what she meant when she said assault weapons. Because again, I want to remind you, if you're killed by somebody with a gun, as far as you're concerned, that gun, the I don't care what he is, he could have used a musket. It's an assault weapon from your perspective, because he just assaulted you with it. So they use these terms that have been focused, grouped and pulled and tested. And you ask, you know, your typical Chardonnay swelling suburban mom in Arlington, should we have assault weapons? Absolutely not. Get rid of all the assault weapons. And now you find out that the assault weapon has just been defined as the gun that you go with your husband to the shooting range and use. Now that your gun is now an assault weapon and it's been banned. Thank you, Abigail. And you will be prosecuted. Oh, yes, they'll go protect the criminal who's still using the now illegal gun. Yes, no, no, Victor Guzman, MS 13 trained our Agua member who's in the country illegally. No, you'll get off light. But but but Buffy Tinsdale going to the shooting range and having a little bit Buffy, Buffy Tinsdale, you know exactly who I'm talking about. Buffy Tinsdale, by the way, hangs out with Abigail Spanberger to regular basis at the country club because their husbands make a lot of money at their government jobs. And that brings us to Mr. Spanberger, who you don't hear a whole lot about, do you? Yeah, no, let's get to Mr. Spanberger, Adam, in a moment. But first, here's the story out of Orange County, Virginia, WVIR, the local station there announcing that the company L three Harris Technologies, a defense and aerospace company that builds rocket systems used by the US military, just got a huge $1.2 billion project awarded by the Commonwealth of Virginia signed into law by Abigail Spanberger. Spanberger made her first stop in central Virginia yesterday in Orange County highlighting the major economic development project expected to bring jobs and long term investment to the area. It's a great write up here in Orange County, Virginia about the governor and about L three Harris Technologies and this great $1.2 billion investment of tax dollars in Virginia going to L three Harris Technologies. How's great is that? Fantastic. Sounds good so far. Sounds fantastic. Until you learned that Adam Spanberger, the husband of Abigail Spanberger, is the lead software engineer at L three Harris Corporation. This is my shocked face. Her first stop out of the gate. The her first big announcement about an investment is to her husband's company. Yes. And let's just be clear. It's not investment. It's government tax dollars. It's spending. This is government spending. It's a gift. It's an award. It's a contract given to L three Harris Technologies, the company that her husband is the lead software engineer. But wow, I'm sure that there's no corruption there. I'm sure that it's just I'm sure they just fair and square. They were the best company for the job. I'm sure I and something tells me that when everyone meets at the country club, Buffy Tinsdale will not be picking up the check. Wow. I think I think Adam and Abigail Spanberger just came into a little extra coinage there. They'll be they'll be buying the next round. Buffy Tinsdale. It's 623. Now on 105.9 FM and streaming worldwide on the WMA L app O'Connor and Company 637 O'Connor and Company 16th day of April. Good morning. Thanks for starting your day here in your nation's capital or wherever you're listening or on the country. It's 705 will speak with George Kaplan chair of the Loudoun County Republican Party about voting no on that constitutional amendment than at 805 KT McFarland and then at 835 Mercedes Schlapp talking about the rally that she is hosting with CPAC along with me and a guy named Glenn Yonkin today 4pm. Lee's Berg on Miller Road. Make sure you're there. Larry with Cassie Smedley. Cassie. Good morning. Good morning. Larry going to be a good day. I want you to and I don't think I'm being untoward here where because I've my wife or other women that I've had in my life friends, girlfriends, what have you. They're the first to point out and recognize when somebody has fake boobs. Am I am I wrong? Have you you've you've you've got a bit of a radar on this. Women are very observant of other women in particular. Yes. I don't I don't notice. I get you know dazzled and mesmerized into me. You know, I can't tell one pair from the next but whatever when I wear outer to restaurant especially and I'm from Southern California. So they're all over the place, right? And you go out at a bar and this woman was my girlfriend, wife, whoever I'm with will say those are fake boobs. You know that that woman right there fake boobs. You can spot them on. So imagine walking down the street in Los Angeles by your typical homeless encampment. And by the way, in Los Angeles, your typical homeless encampment is pretty much every other block where homeless just decide the criminal vagrants have put up their tents or their cardboard boxes and they just start living on the street. And here you see an illegal immigrant homeless person with a pretty sizable pair. And and they look too good to be true. And and you realize, wow, that homeless woman has has fake boobs. They put two and two together here, right? So Jesse Waters reported on this story yesterday. Here's the secret sauce to this whole thing that homeless woman who has the fake boobs. It's actually a man. And and that's how you get away with it. You see, if if you're a criminal, vagrant, illegal alien living on the streets without a penny to your name and you're a woman and you want to get you know, a pair of Hollywood boobs can't do it. But if you're a dude, absolutely and the government will pay for it. Listen, where is your money going? Well, if you live in California, Gavin spending it on boob jobs for immigrants. Meet Jacqueline, a homeless migrant from Mexico, who spoke to journalists at the Manhattan Institute. So here in California, they gave you the breast implants here. Yes. Free. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. Congratulations. Do you feel like that's a good benefit for other migrants here in California? Yeah, even though you don't you're undocumented, you can get it. Hmm. Even if you're undocumented, you can get it. Prime time has been warning you about this for years. If one feels he's trapped in Juanita's body, Gavin Newsom will give him a sex change on your dime. Fact check me. I dare you. This is all true. And it's more than just boobs. Were you able to get the hormones or, you know? Yeah, I did that with my doctor. So so medical, you got the breast implants? Yes. Wow, taxpayer funded. Gracias, Gavin. Remember back in 2022, he promised sex changes for everyone. And I mean everyone universal healthcare for all, regardless of pre existing condition, regardless of the ability to pay and regardless of your immigration status. Nepeds nuked the program just last year when he started running for president and his state ran out of money. So no more new sex changes for migrants unless you're trans fathered in. Good old Jesse can present his story like no one else. That's very real. And that that happened all under Gavin Newsom. Yes, he's right though. By the way, now now no more sex change operations for illegal immigrants on taxpayer dollars in California until he becomes president, then he'll take it nationwide. But every time, first of all, here are the two big lies. Every time Republicans in Congress try to do anything about Obamacare, the so called Affordable Care Act and the rising costs of health care and health insurance premiums that Obamacare has created. And every time they start saying, no, we got to stop subsidizing this because the money is going to illegal immigrants, Democrats and the media will say, well, that's just wrong. It's a no, no illegal immigrants getting well, they literally bragged about it. Right. In the day number one and number two, they'll also ask like you're going to allow children to be bleeding out in the hospital and not get any care when I'm sorry, we can discuss that if you'd like, but could we at the very least decide that sex change operations for illegal immigrants from Guatemala who are living on the streets, maybe they shouldn't be included in your government funded scheme. I mean, start somewhere, but you're right. They always go to to appeal to the heart. You're really going to let a child die on the operating table potentially. That's not who we're talking about. Right. We are talking about this person who very openly and blatantly, I love that this person's like, with my doctor. Yes. Yes. Got everything with my doctor. Oh, my doctor. It seems to have a better relationship with a doctor than most Americans. And by the way, we've talked, you know, in the context of the birthright citizenship debate, we talked about the birth tourism that has popped up where, you know, say what you everybody asks like, you know, oh, these poor, uneducated illegal immigrant. No, they're not uneducated. They're very smart. They know exactly. They game government benefits better than an American citizen does. And they are not stupid about the free sex changes in California. So step aside, birth tourism, we're now having sex change tourism, trans tourism, Fox News writing up here, word is apparently traveled down the continent to the transgender communities in Mexico, Honduras and elsewhere, that if you make it all the way to California, the government will pay for your shelter hormones and surgeries. No questions asked. Uh, the Manhattan Institute through it research discovered not only that shelters were housing illegal immigrants, but they were apparently housing a population of male to female transgender illegal aliens who hope to obtain free gender affirming care in Gavin Newsom in Kamala Harris's California. And it's become a big business. And it's quite the game of telephone, but that big business, that message can make it all the way down, down south. And everybody knows to your point, they know how to game the system better than any of us, certainly better than us law abiding us citizens. We're just, you know, we're the dummies. Yeah, well, exactly. We're the patsies. Alondra, a muscular man in a camouflage shirt and dyed hair tied behind his head, said he had been in the United States after claiming asylum. According to the translator, the city government had offered to pay first and second months rent on private apartments for him and like, uh, like as another transgender person that they found, but neither accepted the offer in like his case because he might not be able to pay for the apartment after the second month. Wearing rouge on his cheeks and a low cut red shirt, Jacqueline flaunted his large chest. He said that he had received transgender hormone treatments and confirmed that he had also received breast implants from the state Medi-Cal program. Gavin Newsom wants to be president everyone. And by the way, I would like somebody to ask Abigail Spanberger, since she is so intent on protecting illegal immigrants in Virginia and caring for them, if she is against giving sex change operations to illegal immigrants in Virginia. And if she is against it, I would like her to explain the principle that she employs here to deny gender affirming care. Why, why do you draw the line there? What makes you different than Gavin Newsom? Explain to me. I'd love to hear her try to stammer her way through that. Right. Cause I don't, I think she would stammer her way through it because I don't think she would be so declarative that she would not do that. I don't think how she could. How can she with her policies and principles, but then when confronted at them, at least Gavin Newsom stands up and says, you're damn right. You're damn right. Anyone on the planet, if they make it to California legally or illegally, they demand a sex change operation. They deserve, oh, I'm sorry, gender affirming care. They deserve it. And we, the government should pay for it with your tax hours. At least Gavin Newsom is shameless enough to proclaim it. Spanberger will lie to you and then just do it in the dark of night. But that's why I said I would love a reporter to confront her on it because well, it just never happens. Anytime a reporter tries to ask her an uncomfortable question, she just runs away and hops into the next limousine that's waiting for her. 645. Next role with Vernon Davis. Follow and listen on your favorite platform. Cassie, are you ready for his majesty and Camilla? I can't call her queen Camilla. She's just Camilla. The king and the king and the Camilla are coming. Are you ready for a royal visit? I really am. I know we're all supposed to be America 250, freedom loving, but I do love the pomp and circumstance of the royals. Listen, nothing wrong with it. You can't have America 250 without remembering that we kicked the king's butt. Exactly. As long as he remembers that too. Yeah, Charles wants to come here and do sort of like some sort of humiliating walk of shame through the nation's capital. He might do a bit of a victory lap. I say, hey, the White House, I remember when we burned that in 1812. That was fun. Okay, we'll give him that one. We'll give him that. You're a joke. Yeah. Well, the details have now been released on the state visit of the king and queen. Here is after arriving in Washington, the king and queen will be welcomed informally by President Trump and the first lady with a private tea. Their majesties will later. Oh gosh, their majesties. What is that? Well, later, she played the long game. Yeah, sure she did. Later attend a garden party bringing together a wide variety of guests representing the connections between our two countries. Did you know that the bridge they call their front yard, the garden, or the back of the back backyard, they don't call it a lawn. They call it a garden. What's that all about? I love it. I'm going to adopt that. I thought a garden was like a, you know, a flower bed. You're right. But no, the garden is like the whole they call the whole thing the garden. The king and queen will be welcomed to the US with a formal ceremony later in the program spelled with an E at the end at the White House, which will feature a ceremonial military review. The king will join the president for a bilateral meeting while the queen and first lady will meet his majesty accompanied by the queen will deliver an address to Congress. This will be only the second time a British monarch has addressed a joint meeting following Queen Elizabeth II speech at the Capitol during a state visit to the United States in 1991. King and Queen will return to the White House for a state dinner hosted by the president and first lady before departing Washington. Their majesties will lay a wreath and flowers in honor of the fallen marking the military partnership between the UK and the US. Kind of cool actually. I am working every angle I have to get to that arrival ceremony. I want to see it all. I want to go to the state dinner, except they might have to serve British food. And then, you know, unless Gordon Ramsay is there, then I'm all for it. I want Gordon Ramsay to do like I have an open air Hell's Kitchen right there in the middle. You got to get reality TV conjoined here with Donald Trump. Don't you? That would be amazing. I think he does a good job on these state dinners. They always have some sort of flair, but also this is why we need the ballroom. You got the Royals coming and you're like, let's pitch a tent on the lawn. You know that at all those joint sessions, Trump's going to be talking about the ballroom. You got to come back for the ballroom. It's going to be the greatest ballroom you ever see. The visit begins April 27th, so just 11 days from now. Tick tock, tick tock. It's 6.53. Hi, I'm Joe Salci. I host the Stackin' Benjamin's podcast. Most economists agree small amount of inflation is actually good. 2 percent is what you're going for. But why is everybody freaking out? Oh, because it's the fallout. People don't track their budget. You have this slow slipping that happens every month. To all of a sudden, you go, man, I don't have any money. The reason is now two people go to a restaurant. The bill is 60 bucks for two. Two guys walking to a restaurant. They start screaming. It's hilarious. $60. Stackin' Benjamin's. Follow and listen on your favorite platform.
