Summary

Jase Robertson discusses preparing his backyard for his son's dinosaur-themed birthday party by removing storm debris, while the hosts analyze 1 John 2 to explore the concepts of faith, fellowship, and forgiveness in Christian relationships, emphasizing God's faithfulness and the dangers of anti-Christ ideology that promotes division rather than unity.

Insights
  • God's faithfulness is the foundation of Christian faith—not human belief alone, but God's commitment to relationship and redemption throughout history
  • The Antichrist concept is better understood as 'anti-Messiah' or anti-Christ's way of living, representing rejection of the cruciform life and relational fellowship with God
  • True confession of Jesus requires abiding relationship and fidelity, not merely verbal assent or transactional belief; it's about intimate, ongoing communion
  • Division and hatred among believers is the fruit of an anti-Christ spirit, while fellowship and love are the fruit of life in Christ
  • Media sensationalism and embellishment distort truth; discernment requires understanding the original context and intent rather than accepting spun narratives

I am unashamed. What about you? Welcome back to Unashamed. I had a very surreal conversation, Jace, on this weekend. I had a call, and Lisa had a call at the same time. So I'm down here in the podcast studio, and Lisa's upstairs. And we're having a conversation with two young people, half half our age in their early 30s that are playing us in a lifetime movie that's being filmed as we speak. The filming started today. And so they're, you know, they're wanting to get to know you. They got all these questions to ask because they're playing a younger version of us. and I told the young man that's playing me, because we talked for two hours, and I felt like I was on one of those, what do you call them, the hearings on Congress. I mean, it was a grilling of questions, because he's trying to get inside of my mind. He's an actor, and so I asked him, I said, have you ever played a person who is living, that you could have this conversation with. And he said no. He'd only played dead people? He had played some people, real people that had died. And then he played a lot of fake people that weren't real people. But he had never played a person who's actually still around. And we'll be watching him play me. It was very surreal. This is getting weird now. It was very weird to do it. And look, through the conversation, of course, I learned a lot about the young man. He's a believer in Jesus. which, you know, that made me feel good. And he told me a lot about his life. And he's been an actor since he was a kid. You know, now he's like 30. He told me a lot about relationships. And so, you know, I learned a lot about him in the process of me talking so much about me. But it was really amazing. But I told him, I said, well, you're the third actor that I've talked to that's played me. One, the first one was the musical. And Jace, you had someone play you as well. I don't know if you Yeah, you did I don't know if you had a conversation with him My guy was They were all from New York And they were like singers And you know That was You're going back a few years here I don't Oh yeah I can't remember things You know Well then you also He put that out of his memory I know Well I remember they all got together And sang the musical like acapella At somebody's house Yeah That was awesome It was great You know Because there's nowhere to hide So you don't remember the guy that played you? You don't remember meeting him? I don't remember. I think I went to it. I'm not a musical guy. I mean, but I did marry a musical woman, which is awesome. And I love it. I love what she's passed on to our kids. And, I mean, even Little Man, he can sing because he's missing her. Blue skies and rainbows. And the second actor, you and I had young children who played us in The Blind. And my little kid was 10, so he was a little bit older. And so we had a Zoom call with him. But, you know, he's 10 years old. It's about me talking to my grandson. Well, I did meet the kid who played me on that because he just came up to me one day and wanted to take a picture. I think we were maybe at church. And because he said, I'm playing you on The Blind. And he's like, do you have any pointers? And I was like, well, what age are you portraying me as? I forgot what it was. It was less than 10. It's like five years old. I said, never open your mouth. And he never did. Did he? I don't remember the blind. I don't think he – I mean, he may have said something on that big scene that you mentioned about going out to see Dad. He may have said something there, but he just looked scared, which is a lot like what you did. Well, my dad jokingly said one time that I spoke as soon as I came out of my mom's womb. The first thing I did, I looked around and said, I don't know about this. That was a joke. But then he said, I never said another word till I was like 10 or 12. That was his quote. But then you left out the last one he said. He said, now we can't shut him up. Now, that was the last thing. Do you feel like you were like, all that was pent up? And that's why now you could, because you're a guy, honestly, and I respect it. Like the last podcast, like you sat down. And legitimately, I believe you. I don't think you had a clue what we're talking about. And yet you just started to go. And it was a lot of words. But it was also like there was a brilliance to us. This is a backhanded compliment, but it is a compliment nonetheless. Because, I mean, you've got some, you're a wordsmith. Well, you brought up a guy that was nicknamed Bad Bunny. And I'm like, the fact that I didn't know the context, I think, helped me. Because I thought rabbit holes for Jesus, the Easter Bunny, Bugs Bunny. Then we have a Bad Bunny. Well, he needs Jesus. So I just created a narrative where that worked. I didn't know who it was either, to be honest with you. I can't keep up anymore. If you look at the top of the charts and you just go down the list of whoever's the number one singer, I'm like, I don't even know who these people are. Well, see, Zach, that's where me and you have a chasm in the way we run life because I wouldn't know where to go find the charts. I'm not interested. I could care less. Yeah. I don't know who's on top of the charts. So, Zach, back to my original thought, I have you to thank and others for making this project happen. And it's the thing I'm most excited about it, especially after the I feel really because you're always unsure. I mean, we were unsure about the blind. We didn't. How's it going to go? What's it going to look like? But after those conversations that Lisa and I had with the actors playing us and just the personal nature, stuff they shared with us about stuff from their own lives and their families, it feels like a God thing, this project. And it certainly has been from our standpoint to begin with, because the whole thing is about the power of forgiveness and what that does in relationships and people and lives being changed. And, you know, Lisa and I share our story all around the country. But, you know, to have it made into a film and to watch it and to have people playing you during some of the worst times in your lives, Lisa and I definitely feel a lot like mom and dad did, you know, hesitant, you know, a little fearful. But at the same time, knowing that God is going to get some glory and people will be helped. That's the whole point. Well, I mean, honestly, to think about the fact that this is a lifetime movie and they were like, yeah, we want to we want you guys to tell this story. I said, well, you realize that this is going to be straight on faith because that's I mean, that is the story is that they were redeemed through Jesus. I mean, yeah, go for it. So it is kind of fun to think about, too, that we're going into mainstream media with some of these projects and telling a difficult story, which I know you guys have been telling it for years. It's just harder to go through some of the – to relive some of that story when you're telling it in this format. But I think it's going to be beautiful. Cole's on the scene right now in an undisclosed location. So, yeah, we're getting it done. yeah we're uh it's a lot shorter uh process for a television movie than a theatrical movie like you did zach with the blind and so it's going to be pretty short hopefully a pretty quick turnaround lisa and i are going to try to get to the set and meet everybody involved and see how the the sausage is made so uh we're excited about it i just i want to mention it so that you guys out on a shame nation not only will look for it um and we'll let you know about all that but also pray for it because you know my first thought today when they sent me a picture from the uh from the shoot was you know may god be glorified in the process of making it uh and also releasing it so uh it's it's exciting well i had an interesting weekend you know i've already told you on the last podcast we didn't get ready for the soup we had our own party which was little man he was turning four and so we just got which is hard to believe already we just got hit by an ice storm so it's like and i know missy she was like gonna go all out for this party because it had a dinosaur theme because that's what he's into so i had one job which was to make our backyard because she checked the weather and she's like look 75 degrees on on sunday and he you know wants to go outside dinosaurs i'll create she was like i'll create the dinosaur kind of theme on our back deck the problem was it's about two foot deep full of pine limbs and i had a uh what's that what's that bush called is it a crape myrtle or a crape myrtle crape myrtle crape myrtle tree that was very mature i'd say 30 foot tall had multiple little trees coming out of the center all of them but maybe two or three were broken and they're hanging like over the backyard and i'm like the worst thing that can happen is to be having a birthday party and you know a tree fall on somebody so i'm gonna have to get although it although it did kind of have a jurassic world sound that's where that's That's where I'm going with that, Sal. And I had two trees on my little pool house behind my house. So I'm like, okay, I got one job. I got to just clean this deck. And it's not very big, but it was just debris. And so I had an idea. Most of the things that Lisa and I speak at are dealing with the life issue. a lot of pregnancy resource centers, a lot of fundraising. And the reason we do that is because this issue is more than just a political football for us. It's real life. Lisa had an abortion when she was a teenager and had many damaging effects on our lives. So it means a lot to us. There's a woman named Evie. She never imagined that she would become pregnant. Doctors told her it wasn't possible. So when she found out she was expecting, fear took over. and her first pregnancy ended in abortion. It was a decision that left her carrying a grief no one had prepared her for. Later, Evie reached out for help. At a pre-born network clinic, she didn't find judgment. She found compassion, she found truth, and she found healing. For the first time in a long time, Evie felt hope. When she became pregnant again, everything was different. She returned to the clinic excited, and when she saw her baby on an ultrasound and she heard that tiny little heartbeat, it confirmed what she already knew in her heart. Today, Evie's daughter is alive. Her heart beats freely outside the womb because an ultrasound was there at exactly the right moment. One ultrasound is just $28. And I think I did this when I was a kid, but because Missy's like, well, how are you going to get all that down? We need to call a professional. I was like, here we go again. I was like, babe, let me just think about this. So what I wound up doing is lassoing the trees with a rope. I had me about a – why do you all think this is funny? Do you know that I lassoed every one of those? That's the most redneck sounding approach I've ever heard. I had to cut two because they were hanging on another one. But I lassoed all those limbs from 30 foot high. I threw the rope, which in my right arms actually sore from doing this because sometimes it took 30, 40 attempts. And I actually lassoed the ones, you know, that were on the little house. The only one I couldn't get was there was one right on the top of the house. And I thought, big wind, it could roll off. So I borrowed my neighbor's ladder, climbed up here. This was funny. So I get up there. And it has a pretty steep incline to it. So I'm up there hanging on for dear life because the last time I was on a roof, I fell off of it while hanging Christmas lights, which was the last time I ever did that. That sounds like Clark Griswold. Oh, it was Clark Griswold. And I've got to be careful what I say. We did the ice storm episode, and I told the day that we lost the truck and lost Margo and had the young man experience, hypothermia. Everybody started sending me messages. Of course, I get them all at one time because my phone's not working. three-quarters of the time. And they like embellishing all these stories that I told which I know is Which are already embellished I already embellished for entertainment purposes A double embellishment But they're like, oh, look. No, somebody sent an article. It's like Jace cuts his leg off. He's in the hospital, you know. No, I said I nicked my leg, which I did. I had the scars to prove it. There was no leg coming off and all that. But let me, I read an article. Well, I felt vindicated because in the last article that came out about a discussion we had that made some of the big newspapers, you got credit for saying stuff that I said. Well, in this one, I actually got credit for a whole thing that he said. And it wasn't me. Jay said it, but they gave me credit for it. So I was like, okay. It's about that. Bounce out. Enjoy. Enjoy. doing so uh what i was going to say oh and the other thing i have to make set the record straight on when i told about the plane with the red button and the parachute remember the hot rod i went up yeah well now this wasn't my fault the pilot said we've had this parachute launched twice and everyone was safe what he didn't say because my assistant took up for me she was like that's not your fault because when the episode come out he emailed my assistant and said no that that parachute has been pulled for all planes in the history of this plane not this specific plane and she said well you didn't clarify that because we were both under the impression so it was actually not his plane where they issued the parachute but he gave that impression so i'm not apologizing for that but so anyway i'm up on which i guess if you think about that it couldn't have been because if they had a jettison out of there that plane would have crashed anyways there would have been the end of that so i guess now that now that i think about us saying that it couldn't have been that plane well i don't know i just that's what he said so uh i'm up on the roof and all of a sudden little man comes out well he sees me in a vulnerable position and he's like he goes into like i'm gonna be your father mode instead of little man he's like jay rock that's what he calls me jay rock come down off that roof right now that is very dangerous you're gonna fall and hurt yourself we laugh how many times has he heard that about himself that's what he did go get lulu to get her to hold the ladder because i'm trying to get off and i you know you can't see the ladder and so she had to hold the ladder but i got down and no no injuries happened it was hilarious but uh so since we don't have any kind of devices or screens which has been great for a little man because it was all just outdoor activity i thought this is we've gone back like a hundred years in my lifestyle the past three weeks because we just We're doing the basics here. We're out cutting trees. We're building fires. We're kicking on the stove. We're singing songs. Because there's no technology whatsoever that can be used. So, Jace, I got to tell you this. I have to hold your thought. But there was one of my favorite – you know, Super Bowl ads are a big deal. Because, you know, it's a lot of – of course, now they release a lot of them early, so it's not a big deal as it used to be. But one of my favorite ads is actually encompassing everything that you're going through or went through on Super Bowl Sunday. The setup was it was Jurassic World Park, the original film, and they had the original actors back on there, the main three, the two scientists and the woman. And they're showing these scenes. And when it gets to the point where everything's starting to break down and the dinosaurs are going to get out, there's an Xfinity guy there. And he says, oh, here's a problem right here. And he just plugs it back in. And the Internet starts working again. And so then all the doors stay shut. And so then they do this whole thing where all the actors, and they're just like having fun in the park. And they're just taking pictures with dinosaurs. It's like all it took was an Xfinity guy to fix the Internet. And that was the end of the whole movie was redone, but they had the original. I thought that was very clever, but you were in Jurassic World without Internet. Oh, I know. That was the basis for the whole movie. Well, that's what I was going to tell you. There's nothing to do. So Missy, she tells Little Man, she's like, if you go help J-Rock pick up the sticks, and when I'm saying picking up sticks, it's two to four foot deep everywhere. I couldn't even get it all done. I got three quarters of it and everything else was on the edge. And I basically all the bushes that I cut, I just throw them over the fence. Like my far backyard just looks like a disaster zone. It looks like a bomb went off. But she said, if you go help him pick up the sticks, I'll give you some money. That boy, somebody's telling him about money because, boy, did he perk up and just was following around like a puppy dog, you know. And it made me think of that quote, Phil said, the only isms that he follows is capitalism and baptism. After all day of doing this, which he seemed to enjoy, Missy gave him a dollar worth of various coins that added up to a dollar. And I didn't know that one of the gifts she got him was a piggy bank. So then when he got the gift, then he put the money, because he carried it around in what he called a treasure box or whatever. And I was like, well, we got capitalism today, babe. We'll get baptism later in his mind, which was great. So anyway, when the party hit, I mean, Missy had all these blow-up dinosaurs. They were like life-size. And I thought, I mean, this is great. It was all decorated. Well, all these kids, the only game they were interested in playing was destroying those dinosaur blow-ups, which I thought this is not going to go well because they just started running wide open, jumping off the deck, jumping on the dinosaurs. And I thought this is going to end with a lot of tears, which is what happened because they, they just lost their minds over battling the dinosaur. And then they all cried. They all got in trouble. And then we had to go in and sing happy birthday. What I found funny is all, I mean, cause she just went all out and he gets all these gifts. there's there's all the pictures with the life-size looking dinosaurs and all this kind of stuff you know the one thing that he carried around for the next because we had him all day next day he carried around someone gave him a card and actually it was uh the showrunner from our duck family treasure uh jenner and her husband they gave him a card and it was a dinosaur card but when you open it up, it played the tune of Happy Birthday. Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na. That card was like the greatest after all the dust settled. And I thought, see, this is why you don't spend a bunch of money on birthday parties. The card that plays a song, that was the number one gift to a point where he took it in to the two little dogs, and he kept playing it. And finally I was like, why are you playing that to the dogs? And he said, well, it might be one of them's birthday, and I don't want them to miss out. So he was singing happy birthday to the dog, which I thought was very nice and unselfish to be doing. So anyway, it was, I guess, somewhat success. She sent us a picture this morning of the little man, and he's wearing a shirt that I guess Lisa sent him. And I don't know that she knew that y'all were having a dino theme or it just was a happenstance, but it's a shirt she gave him for his birthday. It has a name on the back but a dinosaur on the front. Yeah. It says Dino 4. Yeah. Yeah. No, it was fun. But, I mean, look, I love that little boy. And I think this lack of technology and looking back on it, it was the first Super Bowl I missed. But I think I came out on the winning end of this thing. Yeah, I think you did, too. There's a ton of supplements out there. You know, we try to sift through those and see which ones work for us. And it's hard to know who to trust out there. That's why we love Texas Superfood. I would love to, because I think if you take out all the nonsensical things we've talked about, which would take a while, there's some really good nuggets of First John that are coming together, pal. Yes. And I kind of had an epiphany, because you started off this first section talking about faith, which I wanted to ask you why you put that. Just do your little outline because I didn't pay much attention to it until right now. But it was great, Al. You did a great job. You have to understand, this is how my work is received by my cohorts. Well, I don't... Because you make it all... You know, it's the preacher coming out in you where you have the three points and they all start with the same letter. And when I hear that, my eyes glaze over and I think, Oh, because I'm thinking, could it really be that tight and make that much sense? But after thinking about it, I thought, ooh, ooh. It struck. Sometimes it takes a while to get through. So go through it again. So, yeah, here's the outline I have so far of what we've done. In the opening, I had the faith, fellowship, and forgiveness were my three things out of this first chapter in 1 John. because from my view of it, it was faith in the life, which was this idea of eternal life, which we talk about so much, but we kind of in the past always in me, I'm talking about me, but I think I can speak for all of us to say we were going to wait for eternal life. Eternal life has already begun. I mean, that happens when you're reborn, right? So you had faith and then you have fellowship. And fellowship was in the light. Well, we got the fellowship. Because, look, fellowship is in 1 John 1, 4, but we're having fellowship with the Father and the Son. Yeah. And the reason I chose the word faith, Chase, was on that first one is because he reminds his readers about what they believe in. And he does it from his standpoint that he's like what we've seen, what we've heard, what we've touched. And so he's trying to instill in him the idea that what you believed in from the beginning is worth it. And be reminded, we lived it with him because the whole thing is about Jesus. So it was faith in the light, fellowship in the light, and then forgiveness in the Lord of Lords. Which that's there. But here's, I want to take the faith one and turn it on its head a little bit. All right. All right, if I can. Y'all just indulge me. And here's why I came up with this. So when we get to 1 John 2 and verse 28, it was a moment. Because we talked about the Antichrist and what that meant and kind of this order within the Antichrist with just false teachers. And they were trying, he said, I write these things in chapter 2 and verse 26 to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. And so that's in the context of the Antichrist. There are people who are threatened, who don't want to bend the knee to Jesus, who will threaten those who have surrendered to Jesus to try to lead them astray. And the number one thing that he seems to point out is they're denying, because basically, if you're an anti-Jesus, you deny that Jesus was God in human form. which is kind of helps us understand because we spent a whole podcast talking about this concept of Antichrist which took us to man of lawlessness in the Thessalonian letter And you get all these crazy ideas about this. Which I went there just because most people go there, even though it doesn't say Antichrist. I was trying to make a point about it. Well, he made this point that we didn't make. And he said, if you the Antichrist is, you know, the Greek word for that. But if you use the Hebrew word, it's anti-messiah. Yeah, because that's what Christ means. And so he said, you know, when you say anti-messiah, it has a different connotation to it to people. And it really puts it better in the context of the first century into what exactly John was dealing with at that moment. But in those days, the political and the religious were all rolled into one. You had a bunch of people claim to be Messiah. Well, right. And what does Messiah mean? The anointed one, which is why he said in verse 20, but you have an anointing from the Holy One. All of you know the truth. That's actually where we left off because he said, I do not need to write you, verse 21, because you don't know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth. You remember, it's impossible for Jesus to lie or die. Yeah. And then it says, who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ or Messiah, the anointed one. And we are anointed ones. I think when you think about this context, too, this whole thing is about relationship. That's what we're talking about here, fellowship with one another. And so when you think about the opposite of fellowship, the word that pops in my mind is division. If I'm in fellowship with, then we're together. At our church, we had a thing called the fellowship hall. and the fellowship hall was where when you were out of service, if you had like dinner on the grounds or food or what, everybody would go there. And that's where you talk, where you hang out, where you eat meals together. We're all together here. And the opposite of that is just to be divided. And so even like this whole idea, I'm like, I'm giving you a new commandment. Love your brother. If you don't love your brother, you can't love God. And so this is so key for where we're at culturally right now because like we talked in the last podcast of how divided our culture is right now, God's people really do have to stand in the gap. I don't know anybody that I've drawn or the crisis drawn in through me into his kingdom and into the relationship with him by me just blasting them. Now, hard conversations, yes. Crucial conversations, yes. Do we have to tell the truth on things that can make people really uncomfortable? Yes. And we do not – the truth is not compromised. We're not talking about some seeker-friendly tipping around the daisies. No, but it is a spirit of love. And so to be an anti-Christ or anti-Messiah is to be anti-the way of Christ, anti-the way of the Messiah, which was the cruciform life, the life that says I'm walking to the cross myself. Nobody takes my life. I give my life. I give my flesh for the life of the world. That's what we embody. We actually embody the spirit of Christ. To be Christ-filled is to embody his spirit. To be anti-Christ is to reject that. And the result of it, the fruit of that, one, is fellowship is the fruit of life in Christ. Division and hatred, hatred of your brother, is the fruit of an anti-Christ spirit. Well, and remember, in the first century, again, he says in verse 22 of chapter 2, who's the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the Antichrist. He denies the Father and the Son. So to your point, Zach, when you deny Jesus, Yeshua, of his day, that he was from God and is God, then you can't have a relationship with Yahweh either. They come together because they are together. So the main message in the book of John that we kept going back to is I and the Father are one. And this Holy Spirit, I will send you. So you can't reject part of the Godhead and be right with the other parts of the Godhead. It's not going to work. And they reject him primarily, I think, particularly in the first century, is because they didn't like his way. They're like, no, that's not how we're going to do this. This is about power. And Jesus is like, yeah, that's about power. But you don't understand what power is. Oh, we understand what power is. We're going to run the show. We're going to have the conquest. We're going to be in charge. And Jesus said, that's not how the kingdom works, though. And they're like, they didn't have ears to hear that. Pilate, the Roman Empire didn't have ears to hear it. The Israel didn't have ears to hear it. It was only those who were born of the Spirit who have ears to hear and eyes to see the things of the Spirit, which is the cruciform life. It really is like this incredible picture. And that's why when you see this through the lens of eschatology, and what I mean by that is you see this through the lens of God's end-time purpose, that you're like, wait, what is he trying to do here? Jay says it best. He's trying to get his family back. What's the Bible? Oh, exactly. It's a story of how God gets his family back. Family? Yeah. They fellowship on who? The nations. Who are the nations? Everybody. All the people. All different kinds of people. All of them coming back together. That is just rich in this text, and you see it because it's written in a relational format. Do you remember what Pilate told Jesus? He said, do you not realize that I have the power to save you? And you remember what Jesus said? You don't have any power except what's been given you. That was just a straight-up conversation. Bookmark that because I want to bring that power up. so jace tell me what uh what's the most favorite thing you like about your little poochies your little dogs i have one who has really good manners and terrible instincts but then the other has terrible manners but good instincts so they pair well together yeah two out of my three dogs have good manners. One, not so much. But they all are instinctive when it comes time for rough greens because they get super excited when it's time to eat and they know rough greens is part of it. They get a little older and a little slower. Your dogs do. They get a little pickier. Sometimes the stomachs don't always behave. And the reason why our good friend, Dr. Dennis Black, who created rough greens, shows us that part of the problem is with traditional dog food. It's missing probiotics is missing enzymes, omega oils, and all the live vitamins and minerals that your dog needs to digest and absorb food. That's why he created Rough Greens. It's America's number one dog supplement. You sprinkle it right on their food. It's packed with all the live nutrients that they need. I want to read a couple things just because there are a lot of questions about the Antichrist and what's it mean in verse 20 where he says, but you have an anointing from the Holy One. And the verse in verse 20 that says, and all of you know the truth, well, there's a little letter there, and it says, or you know all things. The reason they don't like that translation literally is because you're like, well, how do we know all things? so if you go back and read when jesus predicted and and told his disciples i'm going to give you the holy spirit this makes a little more sense and so i wanted to read where he predicted that before i get back to this what we're talking about faith so in john 14 when he this is before he's died and buried and raised obviously in verse 25 it says all this i have spoken while still with you but the counselor the holy spirit whom the father will send in my name will teach you all things because you're in fellowship with a being that knows everything and you have this inside of you. So it's there. Now, that doesn't mean you're going to understand all these things, but it's there. Because it gets back to this same problem. John makes so many profound statements in 1 John that we're like, well, I can't. It's like the verse that says, you know, if you continue to live in me, you won't sin. We're like, well, I'm out. Well, I have the Holy Spirit, so I know all things. Well, I'm out on that. So I think the problem, I figured out the problem, and we're not going to have enough time during this podcast to sort that out, but I'm going to get there. But I just wanted to give you the building blocks of where he said this before, and now John is now, a few years later, echoing these same things in your practical life. He's like, look, these people are leading you astray, but don't you realize you have an anointing from the Holy Spirit? And this same anointing was that very thing happened to Jesus. You say, because remember the little deal we did about anointing, how is a king formed? And I went through three little things. You have to have some kind of declaration, which in their case was anointing with oil or something like that. Then you have to do some great task, which we said Jesus, the resurrection, pretty well pulled that off. And then you have to ascend to a throne. But when you look at the life of Jesus, well, when was he anointed? There was no oil. Now, you could make a case where the woman took the jar of oil before. But that's not, that was kind of a declaration of worship. And I would say, because when the Holy Spirit is discussed as coming from heaven, it's usually poured out. Think Acts 2. The Holy Spirit was poured out. That was in his baptism. Exactly. That's the right answer. Because the Holy Spirit descended on him like a dove. And what kind of picture does that give you? Well, you remember in the first creation, because there's a first creation, and then Jesus introduced a new creation. What happened to humans? The earth was formless and empty, and the Holy Spirit was hovering over the waters. Then the waters are organized and ordered, and the creation happens. and then so the land is on one side and the water's on the other and then he takes that watered ground and forms a human but and how did he do that he breathed the holy spirit and then you had creation of man and so then you see jesus having this and god gave the declaration to your point, Zach, about the reason it's baptism. He made a declaration. This is my son whom I love and I'm well pleased. The Holy Spirit descended on him like a dove. It was an anointing of the Holy Spirit. So we get to experience that. We bow the knee to Jesus. We surrender. And that same Holy Spirit, I mean, he's very specific because when he gets to the last verse of 1 John 3, he's like, this is how we know that he lives in us. We know it by the Spirit he gave us. And that's the connection to this anointing. But it all comes back to when he predicted it, back to John 14. And then I'll let you comment. In verse 20, he's like, the counsel of the Holy Spirit and the Father will send, and my name will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I've said to you. So he's taking this role as reminding you to look to Jesus. so that's one then in chapter 16 he gives some other tidbits about what this means when the holy spirit comes on you verse uh 13 but when he the spirit of truth comes he will guide you into all truth he will not speak on his own he will speak only what he hears and he will tell you what is yet to come. So I think that's the point he's making here when he says you have an anointing from the Holy One and all of you know all things I do not write you because you don know the truth but because you do know it and because no lie comes to the truth Who is the liar It is the man who denies that Jesus is Christ because that the Holy Spirit job is to remind you of the things Jesus said which would guide you into knowing the one who knows everything. So, and that's why you see another verse that people have trouble with in chapter 3, when it says in verse 20, whenever our hearts condemn us, it says, for God is greater than our hearts and he knows everything. And I think he's trying to make that point. It comes back to if you claim to have fellowship with him and you lie or you say you're not a sinner or you walk in darkness, well, you don't think he knows what's going on. You have the Holy Spirit inside of you. It cannot be any more intimate. So I think that's the overall narrative he's portraying here, you're in this fellowship, yet you're entertaining these ideas that Jesus was not even the Son of God. You're living like the devil, yet all of a sudden now claiming, oh yeah, I'm still in. And that's why he brings up this anointing, the anti-Jesus. I just wanted to make that point. So what did you want to say? The anointing, too, it puts the context in that, particularly that John 14 passage you mentioned, it puts the context in fellowship because the same word was about abiding. And so you could read a verse like this, whoever confesses the son has the father also. And we can read that and think, oh, all I gotta do is just, okay, I confess Jesus. Like I just, I confess Jesus. Now I have to, that's not what he's saying. This isn't a magic password, right? He's not saying here's the password. If you get the password right, kind of like the prayer, ask in Jesus' name and you'll get it. Lord, oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Ben, as the song says in Jesus' name, or is the Mercedes? Well, right. And that's not what this is. This isn't a magic password that you say that you confess Jesus is Lord. It's not just the verbal ascent. It's not even really the acquisition of a particular truth or knowledge that you can now hold the right belief system. Therefore, this is all going to turn out for me in the way that I think it will. what the promise here is, this is about abiding. This is about being in relation with. So how do you know the things of the Spirit when you're in relationship with Him? It's kind of like this. I mean, it's probably hard to explain this, but Jill and I were at an event recently, and there was a moment where I knew that she was upset about something. I could just feel it. She didn't say anything to me. She didn't whisper in my ear, I disagree with that. She didn't pinch my side or poke me. I just know her. So how did you know? I don't know how I knew. I just knew. And I actually knew what it was that bothered her. And the way that I knew that was I've spent 25 years with this woman. There's things I just know and that she knows about me, and we don't have to say a word. Well, why? We live together. What does that mean? We abide together. And so in the same way, as we abide in the Spirit, then the things of the Spirit become very pronounced to us. We just know. Well, why? How do you know? Well, I've been spending a lot of time with him. And I know the way he thinks, and I know his mind. Well, how do you know? Because he's been telling me. But it's not always this audible thing. It's not just an acquisition of a knowledge. It's a spirit. And likewise, there's a spirit of an antichrist that's away from, that's out of fellowship with him, that's not abiding with him. It's antichrist. It's anti-messiah. It's anti-way of the cruciform life. And you move further away from his knowledge or even downright hostile towards it. And in this case, I think these were intentional people that at some point had some kind of experience and knowledge of Christ, and now they're systematically trying to undermine relationship with him in the church. They're going after him. They're trying to take people away. That Greek word charisma, there's two key words to me in this entire text. Charisma, which is the anointing, which is what Jesus is talking about. And I want to read this first to you, Jason, because Peter said exactly what you just said a minute ago, but it's actually written in Acts 10. He says, you know what happened, what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth. There's that word with the Holy Spirit and power and how he went around doing good and healing. So that's that charisma. And then the other one, Zach, the one you just mentioned is is called Minnow. and it's mentioned twice in this text as well, and it's abiding. It's the same word in John 5. Remember John 5, 39, where he says, you know, you study the scriptures diligently, but you miss me. Well, right before that, in verse 38, he says, truth does not abide in you, which, of course, is what they're doing by rejecting. So I love that these two words really are kind of the linchpin. Well, we're tracking because where I'm going with this is when I said I was going to get to Romans, which is not going to be today. But I wanted to make a connection because after he says all that about anointing, abiding, the fellowship, wonderfully done by my cohorts, he then basically says a sentence that this podcast was formed over when he gets to verse 28 of 1 John 2. And I just want to introduce it. He says, and now, dear children, continue in him, because we're having this fellowship, so that when he appears, we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming. Well, the other time that's real noble or that's mentioned is in Romans. In Romans 1, 16, when Paul, I mean, you just think about Rome was in power. You know, their Caesar was basically, he wrote his own manifesto wanting to reset the calendar to be counted by him. Saying, you know, not Jesus before and Jesus after he was here, but by Augustus, or what was his name, Augustine or Augustus, one of those Caesar, Augustus. Yeah, he's like, if you ever read that manifesto. He was basically saying, I'm Lord. Which is funny because you know that happened again after the French Revolution. They tried to change the calendar. They wanted to move away from a seven-day work week to a ten-day work week, mainly to get away from having Christ as the center of anything. Exactly. And here comes Paul, writes a little letter. And what's he armed with? The power of the gospel. He said, I'm not ashamed of the gospel. Because remember when y'all were talking about power? Because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes, first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. But then it says, for in the gospel, a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness. And the actual translations say that it is from faith to faith. Now, I realize there's a lot of debate on what that means. And I've looked at this really hard. And that's why I asked you about the faith concept, Al, because what I noticed is when we when you look at the Greek word for like righteousness there, the same basic word is used for righteousness, for being just. it's a hard word to pin down in English because in the Greek, they're using the same word for all these same concepts, righteousness and even a faith aspect and just. And so most people, like Zach illustrated earlier, they tend to look at this as, you know, punching a ticket or what's our own faith. And that's why I asked you about that faith. But when you, there's a little nugget in 1 John 1 that we kind of skipped over and didn't make much talk about. But in 1 John 1, 9, after he said, if we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, and then there's a little phrase here. He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. And, you know, when you see that word faith, it can mean faith or faithful. And you say, what does that mean? And ultimately, when it says God's righteousness is revealed through the gospel, and you're like, what is that saying ultimately? It's showing his faithfulness. In Romans 3, the first three verses of chapter 3, he specifically brings this up, which is why I'm bringing it up. Because I think that's the context of this. And you say, well, what does it mean to be faithful? It means God's moving in. And he's here to stay, which I think is the whole point of 1 John. He's like, he moved in. You have this anointing. I've moved into your body, in your thoughts, and I know everything. I'm not going anywhere. Well, think about that. I mean, think about that. That's what's missing is the fidelity. That's why I think when you read a verse like the Antichrist, we're like, well, let me just reduce all this to like a confession on one side. Then you got this figure up here. Now, he's bad. And then I can just get all this. I can separate all that out when the whole context is really, no, no, no. God is faithful, and he's calling for your fidelity. That is a much deeper sense of relationship than just like trying to box all this stuff out. You know what I'm saying? Like we're trying to box it. And that's why you illustrated that beautifully earlier. The closest thing we have to that is the person that you commit yourself to spend a life with. And you know it's not always going to be easy. There's going to be good days. There's going to be bad days. But the commitment and the faithfulness of a relationship are what carries the day because, like you said, we're here to stay. Well, that's why a lot of, in my opinion, the religious religiosity or denominational world, when they go down a Roman road, they take some wrong turns. It's because they make that faith from faith. They make it all about you. And this all starts with God's faithfulness. And really, when you look at how Romans breaks down, which we can do on the next podcast, you know, 118 all the way through the end of chapter one shows you from from the first group of people before the Jewish nation ever established all this this world. They were faithless. In fact, the last verse of Romans one has that as one of the categories. They were faithless. Well, then he gets to the Jews in chapter 2 all the way to 320. And guess what he says about them? Faithless. They're faithless. But the whole time, guess who was not faithless? God. He was faithful. That's why I brought up that chapter 3. And he made a promise to Abraham. And Abraham wasn't even a Jew. He was serving false gods and somewhere in Mesopotamia. he was oblivious of all this and became the father of all nations why because he believed what god said and god was faithful and eventually produced jesus who was faithful to a point of despite all our sins and mistakes and all that he did what was right he he stood by the truth he relied on god the whole time he's like i'm not doing this for myself i'm doing this for the Father and died on a cross, was buried and was raised for us. I mean, he just became a relentless pursuer of humanity and the family of God. And so I was just going to say, you're not going to understand this if you don't have at the beginning, God is faithful and he proved it and will continue to be so. So I want to read this as we wrap up. One of my new favorite verses, Hebrews 2.11, to put the exclamation point on what you just said, Jase. Both the one who makes men holy, that's the righteousness, and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. So to your point, that's where we are in Christ today. So we'll pick it up here next time. Get back into 1 John and Romans on Unashamed.
