Summary

Dr. Adam Brockman discusses weekly health headlines including Pfizer's weight loss drug, autism diagnosis bias in females, measles outbreaks, and the pharmaceutical industry's weight loss drug competition. The episode emphasizes preventive health through lifestyle choices, cardiovascular health for February, and addresses the pica condition involving hot glue consumption as a health crisis.

Insights
  • Weight loss pharmaceuticals address symptoms but don't resolve underlying lifestyle factors like inflammation, circadian disruption, and ultra-processed food dependency that drive obesity
  • Autism spectrum disorder may be equally prevalent in females and males, but diagnostic bias has historically underidentified women, leading to misdiagnosis as anxiety or perfectionism
  • 80% of cardiovascular disease is preventable through lifestyle interventions (movement, nutrition, stress management, sleep) rather than medication alone
  • Pica (non-food cravings) signals underlying nutrient deficiencies or psychological trauma and requires micronutrient assessment and counseling, not social media spectacle
  • Ultra-processed food manufacturing introduces contamination risks; consumers should prioritize whole foods that their great-grandparents would recognize
Trends
Pharmaceutical industry pivoting to weight loss drugs as trillion-dollar market opportunity while natural food-based solutions remain underutilizedGrowing recognition of diagnostic bias in neurodevelopmental conditions, particularly autism in females, requiring more personalized screening approachesShift toward functional medicine and micronutrient assessment for addressing behavioral and neurological symptoms rather than psychiatric labelingIncreased consumer awareness of ultra-processed food risks driving demand for whole food alternatives and home cookingPublic health communication failures around vaccination hesitancy revealing need for transparency and collaboration over polarizationNatural cardiovascular support ingredients (hawthorn, CoQ10, omega-3s) gaining clinical validation as alternatives to pharmaceutical interventionsPica and unusual consumption behaviors emerging as viral content, highlighting gap between entertainment culture and mental health crisis response

Welcome friends to the Dr. Bob Martin Show. And for everything we referenced today, the links, the replays, head over to drbob.com. That's drbob.com, spelling out the word doctor, D-O-C-T-O-R, bob.com. There you're going to find it's going to be your go-to resource for living well in a world that loves to take shortcuts. And let me begin with this. If your phone battery drops to 20%, you scramble for a charger, right? But when your body's battery hits 20%, you just call it normal. Well, we've normalized fatigue and anxiety in the foggy thinking in a world that we should be thriving. Yet the greatest charging station, it's already inside you. And you can do it with rest and nourishment, movement, and also your mindset. So the science headlines this week prove again that the small daily actions carry big, measurable impact on your life. And the choices that you're making determine how brightly you shine. So let's go ahead and start this hour with this week's health headlines. First up, we have Pfizer's new weight loss drug. It shows a 12% reduction in mid-stage trial. And this is from Reuters. Pfizer's experimental oral drug just logged promising mid-stage results and swear participants lost an average of 12.3 percent of body weight. The pharmaceutical world immediately took notice with investors salivating at another blockbuster. Now I say this as both a doctor and your health advocate. Yes the science that helps metabolic patients is worth celebrating but we also must ask, why are we chasing quick fix chemistry when we should be mastering our own biology? You know, obesity is rarely about willpower alone. It's inflammation and our circadian disruptions or the stress chemistry in our dependency on ultra processed foods. So a pill may shrink the waistline, but it won't fix the habits that's shrinking our lifespan. So I want Keep an eye on this research. It may help the right patients, but also don't outsource your own power. The nutrition, the muscle activation, gut health, and the stress control remain the most potent weight management tools that are known to humankind. And remember, you can't medicate your way out of a lifestyle that you're not changing. All right, next up, we have a groundbreaking study that finds autism may be equally common in females and males. And this is another story by Reuters. It's found that for decades, autism spectrum disorder was thought to affect boys at rates up to four times higher than girls. But new research upends this belief and showing maybe that autism as equally prevalent in both diagnostic bias, males and females. So the translation, countless women and girls with sensory sensitivities, social challenges, or high empathy masking behaviors have flown under the radar. Their needs were misread as anxiety or perfectionism. So as a clinician, I see this as a wake-up call for compassion. You know, every human brain is unique, and our cultural tendency is to label difference as dysfunction, and that shouldn't be the case. So again, we're looking at better screening, nutritional support for these neurodiverse individuals. So again, thinking like omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, magnesium, and also safer prenatal environments that can have enormous differences in these individuals. So health must evolve from this one size fits none to more personalized support for every brain and body. Okay, this week we also got the U.S. faces the worst measles outbreak in 30 years. So what we're witnessing is the largest U.S. measles spike in decades is tracing back to communities where vaccination hesitancy was merging with mistrust. So whether you're pro or anti-vaccine, the takeaway is clear. This is a communication failure. So public health thrives on transparency and collaboration. So if you're strengthening your immune system with your foundational habits, the adequate vitamin D, your probiotics, your antioxidants, and regardless of where you stand on these policy debates. So health freedom and the public safety, we're not talking about enemies here. They need to be teammates when grounded in respect and also science. Next up, we have who prequalifies a new polio vaccine. So the World Health Organization, it's nodding to a more stable, longer lasting polio vaccine. This represents progress in areas where storage, cost and access have long been barriers. So the broader message as prevention still works, whether it's vaccines in the developing world or clean eating and fitness here at home, proactive protection beats reactive treatment every time. All right, and finally, we got Big Pharma's weight loss price war could reshape the food industry. We're talking about Nova, Nordisk, Pfizer, and Viking Therapeutics. They're all battling to control the trillion-dollar market here with these weight loss drugs. Meanwhile, real foods like avocados, fiber, and wild salmon, they still stand quietly in the aisle, and they're doing the exact same job for less than a copay. So here's the irony. As corporate giants wage chemical wars on calories, we have households that continue to lose their relationship with real food. So listeners, let that sink in. The future of health may not depend on who develops the next injection, but on whether you still know how to cook at home. You know, health isn't information. It's about transformation. You already know most of what works. What you need is the why to keep doing it. So imagine the virgin of yourself that never misses that walk or drinks the water first or sleeps with purpose and speaks kindly to their own reflection. Then act as if that's your person today. And the body starts to follow that belief. And folks, again, we're coming up on a break. I want to hear from you this hour. Which healthy habit is transforming your life? Or maybe it's what's confusing you in the media swirl around drugs like Wagovi or Miracle Supplements. So call us at 800-606-8822. And let's look at this problem or maybe it's a solution that you found. Let's look at it together. You can also message us through drbob.com. All right, folks, I'm going to continue what we've been talking about the last couple weeks, and that is that February isn't just about flowers and chocolate. It's heart health month. And while love may make the world go around, your actual heart, The muscle pulsing tens of thousands of times every day is what truly keeps the story going. Yet, here's the wake-up call. Cardiovascular disease remains America's number one killer. It silently claims nearly 700,000 lives every year. And think about that number. The very organ written into Valentine's cards is the one that we ignore the most. So we had a listener that wrote in several months ago asking how to improve his cardiovascular system. He was a 54-year-old middle school coach. And here's his story. He thought he was healthy, no major pain. He was just a little tired. And then one morning, while jogging with his dog, he felt pressure in his chest. He ignored it, and he said, after all, guys tough it out, right? But that afternoon, his heart didn't. He had a stint and then another case of thinking heart disease was something that happened to other people. And see, that's the problem. It is not just other people. It's us. Heart disease sneaks in quietly through our daily routine. The sleepless nights, skipped workouts, chronic stress, and the comfort foods that are made mostly of salt, sugar, and our own denial. But the good news, you know, is that 80% of heart disease is preventable. That's the power that is literally in your hands. And it's also on your plate. So this February, let's rewrite the love letter in our hearts. And this month, I'm going to continue to keep reinforcing to move like your life depends on it. You know, every brisk walk totaling 150 minutes per week, just a few hours, can slash your heart disease risk dramatically. That's a walk at lunch and maybe one after dinner a few times a week. and also eat colorful. It doesn't have to be complicated. The leafy greens, the berries, the nuts, the legumes, the olive oil, this is nature's recipe for vascular health. And every bite, it starts to plant those healing chemistry that's in your bloodstream. And go ahead and take deep breaths when you're stressed out. That chronic stress, It keeps your heart under siege. A two-minute break that can calm your vagus nerve and lowers your blood pressure. And this happens faster than most prescriptions can. And I want to reinforce your sleep and also your sunlight. The quality rest, it repairs heart tissue. Your morning light, it synchronizes your rhythm and it boosts your nitric oxide, which is nature's vasodilator. And yes, get your numbers checked. Know what your cholesterol is, your blood pressure, your blood sugar. Knowing this, these stats, they shouldn't be fear. It should be freedom to make better choices or tweak what you need to. So listeners, your heart doesn't care about your age or your income or your schedule. It cares about oxygen, nutrition, and kindness. And the way we treat our bodies teaches our heart how to respond. So if our real listener story shared anything today, it has a silver lining. And that's that he became a fierce advocate for prevention. So this February, don't just wear red, live red. Ignite passion for your pulse. Your heart gives you thousands of beats a day. The least we can do is give it a few moments of gratitude and movement and clean fuel in return. Because a strong heartbeat today means a vibrant tomorrow. Time now for our health alternative of the week. Since it's Heart Health Month, it's only fitting we talk about one of nature's most remarkable cardiovascular allies, and that's Hawthorne Berry. Now, if you haven't heard of hawthorn before, that's spelled H-A-W-T-H-O-R-N, I want you to imagine a small crimson fruit that quietly carries centuries of healing reputation. Hawthorn has been used since the first century to support circulatory health, regulate heart rhythm, and strengthen the heartbeat itself. And ancient healers called it the hedge of life. And that's a fitting name for a plant that literally guards your heart. And now we have modern science that is finally catching up. We have dozens of studies that show hawthorn extract improves coronary blood flow, increases oxygen to heart muscle, and it enhances the heart's pumping efficiency. And that's in particular in early stage congestive heart concerns. It helps the body to relax the blood vessels. It lowers mild blood pressure, and it even buffers stress hormones that tighten those arteries. But here's where Hawthorne truly shines. It's gentle. Hawthorne works in harmony with the cardiovascular system. Think of it as cardiovascular yoga. It relaxes and it strengthens and it trains your heart to move with better rhythm and balance. So what makes it work? These beautiful red berries, they're loaded with flavonoids and antioxidants that shield delicate artery walls from oxidation. And that's the oxidative stress of the first domino in heart disease. They also stabilize the collagen and improve elasticity in the vessels. So in plain English, they help your arteries stay youthful and flexible instead of stiff and inflamed. I do want to say always consult your qualified health provider if you're on blood pressure or heart medication in the case of Hawthorne. But don't forget the synergy here Hawthorne can do. It can play beautifully with coenzyme Q10, magnesium, and also omega-3 fatty acids. And together, these can support energy production. They can help you with the cardiovascular or the smooth rhythm, and it lowers inflammatory pressure. And that's nature's equivalent to having this orchestra that's tuned into longevity. So here's your takeaway for the week. You don't need to fear statistics about cardiovascular disease being the nation's number one killer. We need to be aware, but we also need to act. If you clean up processed fats, you move your body daily, you manage stress, and you incorporate natural allies like Hawthorne Berry to keep your ticker strong and resilient. Because listeners, the best cardiologist you'll ever meet might just be the one that you cultivate inside your kitchen cabinet with your daily choices. Your heart beats faithfully for you every day. don't you think it's time that you return the favor hawthorne berry your health alternative of the week all right folks we're coming up on a break and we're going to get into our health outrage next you're listening to the dr bob martin show Are you waiting for the right excuse? All right, folks, I want to take a moment to focus on one of the most underappreciated gateways to your health, and that's your mouth. You know, most people, they brush just to chase away morning breath, but your mouth, it's mission control for your body's first line of defense. You know, it keeps that microbiome balanced, and you're not just protecting your smile, you're supporting heart health, your brain health, and even your immune system. And that's why I'm such a fan of the Spry dental defense system. It's not your average toothpaste and rinse. It's mouth care that's elevated. Spry products, they harness the power of xylitol. That's a plant-based sweetener that flips oral chemistry into your favor. The bad bacteria that feed on sugar, xylitol stops them cold. It lowers acid and it eases gum inflammation and it keeps your teeth sparkling without harsh chemicals or alcohol. And Spry has great flavors like peppermint, cinnamon, and spearmint that you already use and love. And here's the rhythm that I recommend. I brush each morning and night with Spry toothpaste. I swish with their gentle xylitol rinse and I pop a piece of spry gum after meals. That's a simple routine that keeps your tooth enamel strong and your mouth healthy all day long. And you can find spry at CVS, Target, Sprouts, and Natural Grocers, the places that you're already shopping. Now, the same brilliant team also makes clear nasal spray. That's spelled X-L-E-A-R, but it's pronounced clear. It uses xylitol too, but this time it's for your sinuses. Clear nasal sprays clear the congestion and it keeps your airways moist naturally. And there's no stain and no chemicals. It's just clean breathing. So think about it this way. You have two gateways to your well-being. The mouth and the nose. Spry and Clear, they guard both, and they work as a tag team for total wellness and better immunity from the inside out. If you want to learn more, head over to clear.com. That's spelled X-L-E-A-R dot com, and you'll find the science in a store locator there. So be good to those gateways. Go spry, breathe with Clear, and live better. because fresh confidence and vibrant health start with that first smile and the first breath that you take each day. Next up is our health outrage of the week. Jeez, I don't believe it. Oh, come on. It's time for the health outrage because it's nothing but. This week's health outrage isn't about another greedy company. This one is straight out of what in the world are we doing? And it's going viral right now. This is a young woman from Illinois recently confessed on a reality TV show that she eats hot glue sticks every single day. Yeah, you heard that right. not chewing gum, not candy. We're talking about hot glue sticks. That's the same industrial rods that are used for craft projects and furniture repair. And it's now part of someone's daily diet. She explained it that it started back in childhood after an art assignment. And over the years, it turned into a habit to help her relax. And I'm saying to relax, my friends, since when did glue guns become stress therapy. The very idea ought to make every health professional in the country cringe. And here's where it stops being a headline and becomes a health nightmare. Those little plastic rods, they're not harmless. They're made from ethylene vinyl acetate plastics and trace solvents. These are ingredients that can release formaldehyde like compounds when heated. And so swallowing something like that isn't just a bad idea. It's chemical self-harm, if you will. And so over time, these substances can damage the liver, the kidneys, and the digestive tract while disrupting the body's endocrine system. That means that your hormones and your mood and your fertility can all take a hit. So there's no safe serving size for polymer plastic. And what we're really looking at here is a medical red flag known as pica. And this is a condition where people develop cravings for non-food items like chalk and dirt or detergent. It stems from nutrient deficiencies like low iron or zinc, or it's from psychological stress or unresolved trauma. But instead of addressing those causes, social media has turned cases like this into entertainment. And that's the true outrage this week. We've become this culture that's so addicted to spectacle that someone physically harming themselves becomes a viral talking point instead of a cry for help. So we've got millions of people sharing a video for the shock value while ignoring the question that matters. And that's why does this young person feel comfortable consuming chemicals? Now, let's do what we do best on the show. Let's turn outrage into education. If you or someone you love has these unusual cravings, don't just laugh it off that the impulse that the body's doing, it's an emergency text message. I'm missing something vital. So start by requesting a full micronutrient panel through your doctor or functional medicine provider. There's deficiencies in iron and magnesium, B vitamins or trace minerals. And this is often linked to this pica type of behavior. And we need to start to talk openly about these type of things. These habits like this, they're usually less about the substance itself and more about the soothing. So we got professionals who understand nutritional therapy and counseling and stress feedback that can help these people shift from self-harm to self-care. And the goal is not shaming. It's about healing. So if you think about the larger lesson here, our country is hungry for comfort, but starving for nutrition and the connection. So we feed ourselves with junk and screens or toxins because we're missing basic ingredients of health. So when a story like this breaks, it should do more than just shock us. It should also wake us up. So here's your prescription. It's real food. It's real therapy. It's real community. If you build your body with nutrients and you fuel your mind with truth and you surround yourself with people who lift you up and not just looking for likes that will eventually take you up. tear you down. So that's your health outrage of the week. And it's enough to make any well-informed listener sick. Okay, we'll be right back. You're listening to the Dr. Bob Martin Show. There you can re-listen to your favorite episodes, you can catch up on shows you've missed, or discover new health insights. All available 24-7 at drbob.com. All right let go ahead and get to our product recall of the week This one got America Comfort Food on notice The Food and Drug Administration has just issued a recall for over 1 million pounds of frozen tater tots, and that was distributed across 26 states. So yes, these golden, crispy little potato pillows that take us back to elementary school lunches are now part of a nationwide safety scare. And according to the FDA, the products contain clear hard plastic fragments, and that somehow slipped into the manufacturing process. So the recall just initiated is a class two classification, meaning that there is risk of serious harm. It's low, but it's still there and it's real. The translation, you're probably not looking at permanent damage if you bite into one, but you could end up with a cut mouth, a choking episode, or a trip to urgent care if the plastic shard finds the wrong spot. So we're looking at two specific products that are being pulled from distribution warehouses and restaurant freezers as we speak. It's Bora Ida Tater Tots and Cisco Imperial Tater Barrels. Together they represent tens of thousands of cases. You're talking about over a million pounds. And this was produced by McLean Foods USA and distributed from Alaska to Florida. Now, these were bulk food service packages intended for restaurants and cafeterias. So it's not consumer-sized bags that you grab at the supermarket. So for most listeners, there's no need to have panic in clearing out your freezer. Still, here's the rule of thumb. If you run a school kitchen, a bar or grill, or a small restaurant, check your labels now. So these affected lots, they contain the numbers OIF00215A and 1000006067. If you see them, bag them up, return them, or toss them, do not serve these to students or your patrons. Now, let's zoom out a little because every recall like this tells a bigger story, one that goes beyond the few flakes of plastic. You see, this is another chapter in our nation's long romance with ultra-processed foods. Think about it. Even a simple potato isn't simple anymore. If it gets ground, it gets pre-fried, it gets frozen, and it's seasoned with stabilizers or preservatives and flavor enhancers, and this is to stay crispy six months later. So if we're talking about this journey from farm to factory to fork, it travels through metal chutes and plastic bins and assembly lines. So each one of these are an opportunity for contamination. Maybe a plastic guard breaks or maybe a machine vibrates a loose piece of metal in there. And suddenly a million pounds of food that's running through the system before anybody notices it. So, folks, this isn't just a factory problem. It's also a philosophy problem. We've outsourced basically all our foods to machines and now act surprised when we end up eating machine parts. So the truth is that Americans, we know that most of us are eating 60 to 70 percent of our daily calories from ultra-processed foods. We're talking about convenient items that are engineered for shelf life, but not nutrition. There's study after study shows that they're linked to higher rates of obesity and heart disease and cancer and even cognitive decline. In the body, it knows real food and it craves real food. And it also knows when it's being tricked. So there's no amount of flavor science that can replace the minerals and the fiber and the enzymes that come from fresh, unprocessed plants or food that's from the earth. So if we're looking at this from a practical context, when you eat a fresh potato, maybe you steam it or you roast in olive oil, your body's burning the clean fuel. But when you eat a lab engineered potato product that's been deep fried and seed oils flash frozen and reheated eight months later, you get these oxidized fats and depleted nutrients and often trace chemical residues from the industrial process in itself. So it's a different food altogether, but we still call it by the same name and that's potatoes, right? So here's my challenge for you this week. Perform your own household recall, go to your freezer in your pantry and pull out boxes that have more marketing than ingredients. And then you ask yourself, would my great grandmother recognize this as food. And if not, maybe let it let it go. I mean, you know, de process your kitchen the way you de stress your life, strip it down to the real, the fresh and honest. Because when you eat food that's alive, you stay alive. And when your plate is filled with factory creations, don't be shocked when factory problems like plastic contamination find their way into your body. So that's been your product recall of the week. And again, this is to help you stay alert, stay aware, and always one bite ahead of the next recall. Okay, we'll be right back. You're listening to the Dr. Bob Martin Show. Kids don't just bring home homework. They bring home germs. And those germs don't just stay with them. They spread to the whole household. That's why Clear Nasal Spray was created by a practicing physician to give parents and grandparents peace of mind. Well, folks, we're wrapping up another hour here on Health Talk America presents the Dr. Bob Martin Show. And before we send you back into the world, we need to talk about this week's health mystery. One that sounds like it came straight out of Lewis Carroll's imagination, but it's very real and very bizarre. And yet another example of how we love to slap psychiatric labels on things we just maybe don't understand. This is called Alice in Wonderland syndrome. And if you've never heard of it, I want you to buckle up. Imagine you're looking down at your hands or watching them balloon to twice their size. or maybe they're shrinking to the dimensions of a Barbie doll. Picture walking into your bedroom and suddenly feeling like you're stepped into a dollhouse or conversely that you're a giant trapped in a tiny room. Time slows to a crawl or it speeds up like you're on fast forward. The sounds, the textures, everything warps and distorts. And here's the kicker. You're completely lucid. You know what you're seeing isn't real, but your brain won't stop showing you this funhouse mirror version of reality. Now, here's the mystery solved. The number one trigger in children is Epstein-Barr virus. And that's the same virus that gives you mono. And we've talked about before as this trigger for autoimmune conditions. And in adults, the leading cause is bigrains, which are often rooted in inflammation or nutrient deficiencies and gut dysfunction. All things that natural medicine addresses head on. And the research points to dysfunction in this condition in the junction of visual pathways of the brain, likely from reduced blood flow or abnormal electrical activity. And the translation is that your brain isn't getting what it needs to function properly. But what if we address the root cause? What if we look at viral reactivation protocols or anti-inflammatory nutrition or detoxification support or even proper spinal alignment to optimize nerve function? What if we stop treating the brain like it's broken and start treating it like it's just starving for some nutrients?
