Summary

A casual Houston radio show covering local wildlife observations (vultures vs. buzzards), celebrity news (Britney Spears rehab, Sabrina Carpenter at Coachella), festival culture and pricing, social media language translation features on Instagram, and a tribute to late Houston Astros manager Phil Garner.

Insights
  • Festival culture has become increasingly commercialized with extreme pricing ($20+ beers, $30+ food items) creating accessibility barriers for average consumers
  • Social media platforms are rapidly integrating AI-powered translation and voice synthesis features that can replicate user voices across multiple languages
  • First-generation immigrant parents often prioritized English assimilation over native language preservation, creating a gap in bilingual fluency among millennial children
  • Context and cultural awareness matter in public performances; misunderstandings about cultural celebrations can quickly become viral controversies without proper education
  • Immersive language learning through family conversation is more effective than gamified apps that teach impractical vocabulary scenarios

No, I don't want to know they really were looking at something in the neighbor's yard I Then when they like fly down their wingspan look like it was like five feet wide That's incredible. They're just sitting there one time when I was on a bright I was it I 10 and guestner and there's like I guess there's like a little Strip there before you get to Memorial City Mall with some houses there And there was a vulture eating a an animal and I couldn't get the words out. I couldn't get the words out I kept yelling to my kids I Roadkill people come around right I just googled Kev's facts I'll say I wanted to try and call you out do the vultures throw up on their food before they eat it No Vultures do not throw up on their food before they eat it instead. They use projectile vomiting as a defense mechanism with threatened or Stressed often aiming it at predators. I'm gonna barf My direction was wrong. It's not pointed at the food. It's Other people They don't have the goblins to kill the animal right pray They have to get let someone else do it or just let nature take its course and then they go down there and take it They do have the strongest acid in the animal kingdom. Okay. I this is not facts I thought I was gonna wake up to on a Monday, but okay, there we go I got waved down by a gentleman this morning I'm like out of light and he's like he's like waving me down. He's like ma'am ma'am And I'm just like looking straight and I'm like yeah, you're making eye contact. Don't make eye contact I see his hands like I was like And he's like row down your window I'm rolling down the window looking over like like a like a crack right like what was your problem? What what? Why? Your tail lights out. I was like, okay. Thank you and then he drove away I was like, I'm not getting out the car to look so I get out and I'm like Is it out is it out so? So I need to eat that thing. It was nice, but like tell me it's not terrifying. It's terrifying Take the message men don't ask a woman to roll her window down at night in traffic That's a scam Right yes, cuz now I'm like China Is it easy to change? Yeah, jeep tail lights. I think it is famously cops pull people over for in movies and that's how they get busted It's like heroin dealers, right and that's what I mean But it could get pulled over I could get pulled over I've gotten pulled over for that Yeah, see that's definitely a thing. Yeah, these little would be jazz You'd be like mom. It's cool loves like the incorporated neighborhoods between this radio station and I-10. Yeah, they're they're waiting for you They're looking I don't want to say they're bored, but I got pinched there one time not realizing it was an HPD There Really need to get that fixed for sure if you're going down guessing her you get that little window of Memorial villages Where they park and wait there's an auto zone that you can go down and match it up and then tell your husband that here's a YouTube video Do this? Yeah Or can I just walk in there and have them do it? No, it's a little bit too much But then I could call them and they could come kept so this could all work out in my favor is what I'm hearing Then they know where you live Stranger dangerous Can I tell you the guys over the last um, I don't know four days I've churched more for all of y'all than y'all that y'all have to go for the rest of the year Not you For those that missed it Kevin speaking fun of my stuff Don't bring it up. Don't get cancelled But anyway, yes We'll play that clip and you can tell me so yeah yesterday This would be Easter Monday, which a lot of schools had me Easter Monday off But my kids school did not have Easter Monday off for regular like Protestants slash Catholic Easter so I was like y'all can't have off her Or is the dox Easter then we have to go to school trying to I mean our night I like our night was not as late as I thought it could have been you know I mean saying if it was like 11 30 or 12 and we were still like in it. I'd be like oh, this is gonna be rough I don't know. I don't know but my whole life my mom was so exhausted She's like there ain't no way I'm waking up take five kids to school everyone's off See she was doing it for herself for sure. Thank God that woman had to help help save her sanity It's a lot it rained yesterday. Oh, you're gonna love this part Saturday I'm cleaning the outside and then the weather report for Sunday was summer rain We don't know where but still you got to clean the outside here on people over because what if it's nice? And then we sit down there's pollen everywhere. Oh, so we clean out the tables hose them down all the things Before we get everything else going and then you know, we're inside the house cleaning and what's that noise whoosh? Water everywhere is raining and I've taken the cushions out of the zipper little the cushions for your butt on a patio chair I took the covers off to wash them. So now you have those inserts just sitting there and they got soaked So then I call the patio home store and I go hi Do you guys sell just like the inserts because the inserts were on the tables when it started raining? Because now what happens you're gonna have a nice clean outside you have a wet insert Oh, no, and the guy is like no we only sell those as a set and I go And he goes what size do you have I said for big butts like I have those wide chairs like the not the only small chairs They're they're pretty comfortable and he goes and I'm not talking furniture like couch. I'm talking about like patio chairs at the table Yeah, those cushions you can find them like a Costco, but these are like yeah, I 24x24 something Yeah, this is the time We're just not gonna have cushions on the chairs if we use them. Yeah, we're gonna let these try dry out Which today, I'm not sure if it will come out because it says it's gonna rain today again. Yes, there's pretty sporadic though I don't feel like it rained for a long time It was hovering for a long time and then it finally hit us Oh really a lot of rain my area. It was just like spitting on us. It was a thing It was a I took the kids for a while outside. It wasn't like the heavy Texas rain I'm used to no wasn't like I felt like I was back in Illinois with a misty rain like Seattle type Well, we yeah, that's true I think I was leaving my house and it was a little misty, but it was a little hard there for a minute Cypress got nailed I think did they yes Parts of our area get it not all of us get it like you did well we got it you didn't get it Cypress gets hit hard. Yeah, and was like, what's your problem? We forget how big this area is it's insane. It's nuts. It's crazy I could tell you it's not gonna rain today and then you text us tomorrow this time and say did it rain where you live? Mm-hmm because when I woke up this morning I checked the weather said there was gonna be rain in the forecast But if you're just looking at a quick look on your phone It doesn't show it on the on the forecast with a quick look, but 71 degrees right now and it's gonna be a high of 84 And welcome to your Monday hi 84 high of 84 In the 80s to you know fresh after a rain. You'll be real thick. Yeah, it's humid. Yeah Baby squirrels around I saw them all over my cup they even they know the squirrels are like yep, it's time Nothing's gonna stop us now Is what they're saying I want a nut and the vultures Buzzards They're really skinny necks and they have giant black bodies with huge wingspans those are buzzards They're kind of the same it says off the Google image or scavengers Let me see your ball had in a true buzzard It's like a hawk. I don't eat the prey. There's our picture there. I can't tell which is which oh, yeah That's the one that I saw what's that one which way? Oh, that's vulture. Yeah, that's what that's exactly what I saw at my neighbor's house That is terrifying that creeps me out now. You want to know what put in a mystery box of vulture That's like Someone has a full Rabbit we can't bring up vulture in here From the zoo Do they have those at the zoo? I don't think we can call her zoo contacts. I doubt or there's some little culture The the Texas zoo of Conrad, you know, like there's There lady I she's got like alligators and stuff wild lifers Maybe bring that in for Ladi you have to do something crazy for Ladi that box has to get painted there Kevin still sitting there pretty Oh, they're naked. I bought the the pieces to go to put your hands through and the new plexiglass this weekend So I'll take it home today and give it another one of those construction worker guys The contractor all right Yeah, I don't have a shop anymore. I live in a little cubby house I can't do it outside Going for a place that was good to a place that bad Two places that were great. My place isn't as good as it used to be and then lamenting how great It was 70 we're gonna get the last laugh on you ruler Yeah Okay, your keyword of the day to get the Harry Styles by the way is the word Harry HR our why Send that to the trip tech number nine five eight one nine tender for a chance to win one of four trips to New York and For the together together tour or the trip to London the national key word is Harry And the number is nine five eight one nine We'll be back with scoop on the ruler show there in K. Well, if you heard it Yeah, I'm gonna use it the next hour the next one Little six o'clock secret password doesn't change until Sam show but you gotta hear it Here it is so you can use it all right hang on there Okay, so let me get you this big story before we go to spirit in carpenter Brittany Spears put herself in rehab Good for her Brittany voluntarily entered rehab yesterday for drug and alcohol issues This is a month after she got that DUI and the time of her arrest her representative Said Brittany takes planned to take the right steps to come up with an overdue needed plan to set set her herself up for success She went to rehab in 2007 Then she had her custody about the Kevin Federline 2008. She was hospitalized twice For psychiatric evaluation that led to the conservatorship which was lifted 13 years later in 2021 Because people were paying attention to maybe she's too controlled and now a lot of those people that were like free Brittany free Brittany like And If you followed her at any of her socials or even if you didn't follow her you still it still probably came across So the memes like entertainment news the night or yeah when she's dancing with the knives or doing all this crazy stuff I'm like what is happening there? So she has entered rehab. We wish her well It would bend, you know, of course did she do it so she doesn't get in trouble with the DUI Maybe lawyers same time. I'm doing it Last time we had that story I was like yellow this girl gonna make it a 50 I mean this girl needs to get some help before she makes it to 50 if she can get there Because of her right people so Coachella was happening super in a carpenters on set and listen when people are yelling things out of a crowd No, the average person doesn't know what this feels like But we know what this feels like every single one of us in this room has been on the stage Where the light is so bright you can't see past the first two rows and you can't hear anything clearly, right? I'm just gonna preface that because I feel like in a setting where somebody's on a stage everyone just thinks well What do you mean? You couldn't understand that or whatever? I don't know But I feel like that was kind of if she if we could hear what she hears on this mic I think there would have been enough room for some kind of like Interaction more interaction or questions, but who knows she's interset. She's in her mind She's yeah, and she has the earpieces in probably your pieces in she could have said cuz the person says my culture She could have said what what's your culture? Okay, and I think this wouldn't have been a story But here's what happens that's made it a story I think I heard someone yodel Is that what you're doing I Don't like it That's your culture is yodeling Is this burning man what's going on She doesn't understand like I didn't understand until I got in the culture Celebration but like they do that in When weddings they do it at weddings celebrate when they're in happy joy Times yeah, I mean I feel like the conversation first. She said was weird before she knew she that was you when she thought was yodeling Then the lady says it's her culture. It's the celebration and she goes this burning man She moves on that was her transition to get back on focus of the thing So do you feel like that's no people mad? Her community is really mad I'm like she doesn't know this is a great time and somebody mad say hey Here's what let's educate you. I mean I definitely have Been to events and we have family friends that that's what you know, so you're at a wedding the ants are all doing that I grew up how you do it when you're a farm. I would never have known that no, right, right And plus I feel like in that position Maybe this is more of a story that needs to be because it was a slow entertainment news day because in that position when you're Amongst thousands of people, you know, she did I feel like interact with her and she tried to move it along She didn't she didn't say it was weird after the lady so as part of my culture Listen, I don't know what what people have seen on stage. We we She said it was weird she said it was weird first when she said we're doing right yodeling the yodeling was weird Yeah, that was weird yodeling if that was really miss you those notes from my culture It's a celebration and she goes this burning man, which I don't really know what that means But I mean, I know it's a very good drug and doing weird things. Oh, okay I didn't know the reference to like why would this be burning man's more of a burning man in Coachella Supposed to be a festival that was supposed to be like an affordable concert in 1999 when they started this To take a take on the big, you know the big market of ticket prices and that and now it's like what 640 bucks Oh my god per person Good god 20 dollar beers $17 star Is like insane yeah, so it's like but it started 1999 it was supposed to be the alternative of the expensive Lollipalooza type stuff Affordable and then all of a sudden you know these rich people and influencers show up in California That's all funny things. Someone's like guys in LA if you're looking for the perfect normal woman This is the weekend to be here because the rest left to Coachella I Feel like with anything that should find success or looks popular Somebody's gonna come in to infiltrate it with sponsorships look at YouTube is a great example How much do we complain man? Remember the early days of YouTube how easy it was just watch a video once they really tell you we're watching videos Then they put ads in the videos in the end of the beginning in the middle for me I've noticed it in WWE wrestling. It was sold. Yeah to TKO which owns UFC Okay, and now like if you watch a match on the on the ring apron like you look on it It's got like five sponsors. You should have nothing. I was like there's a stickers logo. There's a you know video game logo There's like four other low. There's Slim Jim Netflix. It's like too much and tickets are the WrestleMania's this weekend Okay, and like tickets like $2,000. Oh my god the bottom Do you understand who your fans are? These people are just trying to make a buck and they love your entertainment Don't don't do that to them 2000 bucks somebody's reminding us that Shakira did the The Arabic celebration call once on stage and she got criticized for it because people didn't know why she did it Remember she has Lebanese background to Shakira. Yes. I think a lot of people just don't know about it One person said after she said my culture then Sabrina said I don't like it says a texture if we go back to the audio Yeah, she said I don't like it after she said the culture I thought she said it before when she said it was yelling that's the part that got it So that's a story today. I mean, maybe I'm just used to hearing back next week Do they do two weeks in a row with the same people? Remember Beyonce did two when whoever the headliner is does both weekends People up From you know and have them Do their sound from Arabic culture? Yeah to have that I mean it's a say to me that that Yelling is like the equivalent to like any any culture that when you get Excited you like the Greeks we say oppa or whatever it is and they do the yelling It is two weeks Sam. Yeah, she's doing both weeks. Okay. Well, let's go to know Sabrina She's like I did so much Maybe that was she was I guess she was planning for this show for like eight months Because she had the cars lined up like like it would look like a movie theater Oh, that's cool driving theater and she did the soul. Will Ferrell came out started it nice and then Beaver just comes out just him in a computer I Reviews that other people absolutely hated it Yes, it was so torn. I've never stripped down torn. Yes They're like people paid for this and they were expecting so much and they just thought it was absolutely awful And then Sabrina put like real Yeah, by the way, the food is also listed here Eric about how outrageous the food prices are Coachella I knew the beer was 20 chicken sandwiches 30 bucks stop. Yeah, let me know to ten dollars lemonade ten dollars Plate of wings with fries 25 bucks one guy said he paid 41 dollars for two slices of pizza and a can of coke So is it in a desert as forgive me y'all? I don't know much about this because of the price of it and it's kind of Yeah, I don't like to be in big crowd my impression of Coachella Kev for the longest time was oh, that's like a West Coast thing You know, I mean like people go on the West Coast with the desert with a bunch of celebrities and you know That's like a West Coast thing and then over the years kind of like think of like Austin City Limits That's not just become ACL and when I talk about tearing your ACL in your knee It's just the whole old look the whole country knows about ACL And you know what really turned it upside down is when Justin Bieber turned up I mean Justin Timberlake turned up one year and like oh my god An Austin for Austin City Limit or it was a South by Southwest I think that was South by Southwest actually Justin Timberlake came up for South by Southwest and then those kinds of things got more national attention That's where Coachella started but Coachella now has become like the national thing because we've given away trips to Coachella Where do you fly into Palm Springs? Yeah? I Have no desire. I have to go a lot of blues with my wife and kids want to go to that my kids want to go Yeah, I'm like I'll get a hotel. That sounds fun. I'll just stay you guys go to the I'll go why I'll see special pumpkins That's all I care about. I don't need to see Maybe there are 200,000 people. Yeah, because it's like three days of like 30 or a day or something Thursday to Sunday. I'm like I do not really Alice's headlining one day. She not or was that last year? I can't remember. I just don't she's excited my daughter's like this is my dream Wow, okay But that is the wheelhouse of who lives at look Coachella, then you got Burning Man You got Bonnaroo Ultra music festival coach tomorrow. What stage coach? That's the country one. Oh Nice, that's the one where I remember how's I watching one of those bachelor type shows the summer paradise whatever they do and they're all at Stagecoach hooking up The hell's the stagecoach thing and there's one in Mexico Oh, it's coming. Yeah. Oh, wow. It's all this time of year. There's one in Mexico one of my good friends always goes to every year It's in Playa The car or how do you say Carmen or is there another playa? That's famous Playa del Carmen is probably the most Basic famous one like touristy. Yeah, I'm not sure where but I just know it's playa somewhere playa because I've seen the posts Isn't playa beach in Spanish? It is yeah, so there's a lot of And Eric you take in like coming up next I want you to tell me what you used or what happened on your Instagram Is there like a new thing that can make us speak all kinds of languages? This is weird I don't know cuz I put a story up there still up there producer Eric if you want to see my story about something I noticed yesterday at Costco and Yes, I saw something I hit a button and it made me speak Spanish and it was my voice I mean for real and it matched up my lips and everything. It was like yes I was like I did not do this, but I wish I could speak this language cuz I'm really you are really fluent in Spanish I was like very impressed. That was like perfect. I'll play it here for you. Yes, you will pick different Different languages. I do know you said a bad word in there. I did. Yeah. Oh, yeah, there's a bad Spanish word in there So I did say that's a yet. No, if you speak Spanish, you know bad words Here You Well every day don't we learn something new on social media if you follow us on social media which you can At radio Rula Eric is at producer Eric Sam is at slam given Kevin Oh Believe me today. I'm radio such okay. I retire or fired who knows what will happen first I fired That's thinking the bayou No, take it by you butcher don't need to post anything by you butcher So there's all these different filters there all and there's so many things on there I came and tell what they're actually doing, but if you're real tech savvy You're excited about the next new thing that the next new social platform is showing you This is weird on Instagram yesterday. I was well, I went to Costco. I'll set up first I went to Costco in the morning to get some things and There's about 10 30. I was just trying to get through in the back You know by the meat and everything and it's kind of there's not much room there You can only maybe get two or three carts and people are just converging on this lady that just made some food. I mean it was like I was laughing I'm just like these people have no shame the way they were just grabbing and pushing people all the way What was the sample I'm curious. I can't remember what it was I just tried to get the hell out of there. I don't want samples. I already had breakfast at 10. It's 10 30 Uh-huh, and so I I started thinking these people and I'm sometimes guilty of it, but we're like pigeons We're like seagulls. I started thinking about that like we're you know We always make fun of the seagulls that down the beach you have a little bread on your oh, yeah You feed one and 20 show up. Yeah, I'm like that we're human pigeons and human seagulls when it comes to Costco Little thing about that and then last night if you click that right heart on top Like maybe people like comments and it you know it goes there It's this thing said your translations are you can do your translations I'm like, what does that mean and I clicked on it and you can change Your language so I just hit Spanish and then I'll play the audio here. It's really weird I'm like, oh, I thought it was just gonna put like translated My captions Captions And it took my voice even and it matched up everything with my voice like your mouth looks like it's making these words. Yes. Yeah It's crazy here. Here you go. About where there's Christian I know the gaviotas Okay Did that I'm like voice so that's my voice what the hell spot on they don't have like Listen languages aren't it's not like you're going like German Spanish Italian What's that one Canada Canada Portuguese That's weird wow Quickly and it matches up. That's up say that that's crazy. I don't know what man I'm just a scary world man. It is wild it is and that's available to everyone. It's great I don't know why it popped up. I looked like you know how you do the like and then it a repost it Like that little heart the heart on the right. Yeah, yeah, you could repost it and send it out I think it's I mean it's made probably to send a you know You have the English version different versions and stuff to get your fan base up and I'm gonna see where would you find that on here? I never saw it anywhere else until I clicked on that like later on like eight hours later I saw this I'm like, what is this button? So I don't know Profile maybe Because people are looking for it today like oh, I want to speak a different language I would like to be in a different language I really wish it was more choices of languages I would love to see it translate you into French or Italian it doesn't have those listed Spanish is close is the closest one that we're familiar with and also so many people in Ticked off accent Oh Language in the Instagram app you go to your profile tap the three line menu at the top right Select settings and activities scroll down to your app and media then tap language But that's the change the way you're looking at it not the way it's translating. He's talking about he's talking about Effect yeah, I'm voice. I mean it was my voice. Okay. How about this? Oh, they put how to change your speaking language then maybe so you would you have to have a story up I think is what it sounds like because he utilized the story And maybe take one of your old stories. We're looking the heart. Maybe it's down there. Maybe this just popped up I have no idea. I've never heard of this. You should probably make a story during the break and then try it See if it works. I did a story about couch cello. Oh, yeah Chela, I like that. Okay, so story settings you think did you and you talked about it? Yeah, okay So yeah, then now go up to the like he said go up to the top right and look on that heart somebody said that is awesome That's great Spanish Eric. Thank you Many hours that duo lingo finally paid off if I can do that for see, you know for all of our duo lingo fans out there Let me ask you this question I I only know duo lingo for one language because my kids are trying to do the easiest way of What's that the least path of resistance to learning my my parents language right Greek and on duo lingo? It has the stupidest stuff. It wants them to learn. Yeah, you know, it says it says like Thor easy in a rose, you know, that means the rice is pink Why are my kids learning that give some in a rose? No, no rice is usually not pink And why is this important? You will never be in Greece saying I would like to have the pink rice What if you do there is no pink rice?
