This episode of We're Alive: Descendants follows Vera as she meets her father Oliver Blackburn and learns about a secret multi-generational family organization dating back to the American Revolution. The episode reveals the structure, rules, and operations of these interconnected families while Vera's friends arrive unexpectedly, complicating her introduction to this hidden world.
Insights
- Secret organizational structures can maintain operational security across centuries through strict compartmentalization, blood ties, and distributed autonomous operations
- Family-based loyalty systems create stronger bonds than traditional hierarchies, enabling covert coordination across public and private spheres
- Specialized role differentiation within organizations (political influencers, operatives, enforcers) allows simultaneous public legitimacy and hidden operations
- Trust mechanisms in clandestine groups rely on bloodline verification and early indoctrination rather than external credentials
- Organizational vendettas and internal justice systems can replace external legal frameworks when maintaining secrecy is paramount

My real name is Oliver Blackburn. I'm your father. You? You are my dad? That's right. Speechless. That's first. Crazy, right? Do you mind? Are you sure? How would I even know if you're telling the truth? Well, there's a slight resemblance. It's the nose, right? Vera, you were born on March 26th, 2011. There couldn't be anyone else. Your mother didn't tell you about me or any of this? I found a name on a letter once, but no, she never did. Okay. Why don't you sit back down? I know you must have lots of questions. I figured we could discuss them over dinner. You've been through so much to get here. I'm not hungry. Well, it'll be here when you are. I so have been looking forward to being back here. You so should have never left. Why did you leave? Me? Yes. But you, first, Oliver, if you are who you say you are, then you left my mother all alone, completely abandoning all responsibility you had to both of us. I didn't know about you until much later. Neither CJ nor I had any idea she was pregnant. And it was never my plan to leave like I did. Everything just happened so quickly. Why did you have to go at all? So no one told you. You have no idea what I had to do. Had to do? Yeah, you killed a man and fled. My task was to take care of a lying murderer, Simeon Eklund, at the Twin Towers Jail. That's why I was even in California to begin with. And then the outbreak happened, and everything went to hell. I was trapped in there. It took everything I had just to escape that place. Only a few of us survived. And eventually I made my way to the colony. That's when I met your mother. Never met anyone like CJ. Strong, resilient, only person I would ever worry about going toe to toe with. We were building a life together. Everything was turning out better than I thought was possible. Until he showed up. Simeon survived the jail as well and killed a lot of innocent people in the process. He would have done far worse at the colony if he was left to his own devices. I owed it to the family and everyone there to do what needed to be done. Your mom had strict laws in place about harming others. I would not have been exempt from those rules. You know how she is. But there could have been a way. I didn't have a choice. Staying any longer would have put me at risk. I couldn't let anyone discover who I was. Yeah? And who are you, really? I started out just a member. When I met your mother, I was an enforcer. After I returned, I became the head of the Blackburns. Now, I am the patriarch of all the families. That means he's the boss. W-w-wait. You're in charge of all of this? What even is this? What are families? Why do you even call yourselves that? Why am I here? Well, I guess I'll start with the easy one. The family or families are nicknamed that in case anyone overheard something about us they weren't supposed to. Everyone has a family, so it's an easy cover. So you're not really blood-related? Well, actually a good amount of us are. Various marriages and direct lineages trace all the way back to when we were founded. Who we are and what we do has to remain a secret. So trust is essential for us. Blood ties are usually the strongest bond. Being my daughter gives you that connection. Wouldn't guess by looking, but Oliver and I are actually second cousins. But we do have multiple different households and last names. You're making it sound like we're inbred. Well, you might be. Hey, she's joking. That's not a thing. Anymore. So you're like some high-class mob? Or secret society? Oh, come on now, that just makes it sound cheap. Nah, admittedly there are some similarities. The mafia arose in Italy during the Middle Ages, dedicated to overthrowing foreign conquerors. They were formed out of a need to maintain order under lawless conditions. And in a way, we did the same thing here in the early days of the United States. Jeez, how long have there been these families? A long time. These four were our founders. Emmanuel Amsel, Mary Beth Blackburn, Terrence Chisholm, and David Dawson. Why are there paintings of only three of them? Well, I'll get to that. The original families, they all saw the opportunities at the birth of our new nation, and began organizing just before the start of the Revolutionary War. Here comes the history lesson if I wasn't already half asleep. Oh, you shut up. I never get tired of the story. There were a few well-known societies that played their part in our nation's founding. The Sons of Liberty, the Freemasons, now they're already fairly well-known. But those were individuals who wanted the spotlight to become part of the history books, the politicians that tried to make a name for themselves. But the real power and control always came from those who remain hidden in the background. Our four families figured out ways to collaborate in secret, growing stronger through coordination with one another. One of our founders was even involved in the Culper Ring, spies that subverted the British occupation. Another would be responsible for preventing the assassination of high-ranking military officers, while the others, Amsel's and Dawson's, would divert supply chains to loyalists. Their combined efforts are one of the reasons we eventually won the war in 1778. You've been around since the 1700s? You're serious. We even have a few artifacts from the Revolution scattered around the house. You walked by one on your way here. It's just hard to imagine that you've been around that long and no one has noticed. Not without sacrifices. And some people have come close. We've only been able to keep ourselves a secret by working together. Establishing simple and firm rules and maintaining a strict balance. Inevitably, when one part of the family would have to get their hands dirty, another would find a way to make them clean again. What? Dinner was getting cold. I'm starving. You know how long it's been since we last ate? There's still a lot more to discuss, but Jeff did prepare this specially for your arrival. Be ashamed to let it all go to waste. Oh my god. I know, right? You're still not hungry, Vera? I'm... I'm having a hard time accepting this. And you... Do you know how many nights I lied awake, lost in my own head, wondering why you would leave us or who you even were? You remember expecting any of this, huh? Shush. Hearing all this now may answer a lot of my questions, but... it doesn't begin to erase any of the pain. I can't tell you how many times I rehearsed what I would finally say to you, if or when we ever met, to try and explain all the reasons why I was never there for you in the ways I wanted to be. But now that you're here, I'll finally have that opportunity, if you'll let me. There's no way I can ever expect to reverse the years of damage overnight, but I'd like to try and make things better. I only ask that you don't close me out, or turn your back on the opportunity to know what this all is, and keep an open mind to who we truly are. Would you at least give this a chance? I... might be able to do that. Thank you. Now, I know you have to be starving. Please. It does smell good. Oh, yeah, it is. Life here definitely has its rewards. This is only the beginning. Here, here. Fuck it, set off the traps. I need to get in there already. Some are lethal. This one's covering a bit of spikes below. You really want to rush through and get stuck in that. And I'm sure there's more I haven't found. Fine, fine. Keep moving. There has to be at least one clear path through, right? If anyone's in there, they'd have to have a way in and out, so we keep circling. Eventually, we'll find out. Oh, shit! Get back, get back! That's definitely a muckbreaker. Slow, but strong. Fuck, fuck, can we shoot it? If you want everyone to know where we are... Shit, shit, shit, shit. All right, all right, move this way. Stay ahead of me. Hopefully, there's... Another one! Your darts used them. I don't have many left. And look at the skidding. Won't go through anyway. Shit, shit, shit, shit. All right, all right, back out. Turn around. We're so damn close. That was delicious. Tell Chef Thank You from all of us. Is everyone here part of the family? Not the staff. They're associates. Why would they be working for you if they're not members? A lot of benefits. Protection or financial. It may not look like it, but they live better than most. So, this Mary Beth Blackburn... She's like my great-great-grandmother? A lot of greats. And she really was pretty great. We come from good blood. So, you and I are like third cousins? Yeah, I kind of get lost in all those seconds, thirds, or twice removed, whatever. But we had the same great-grandpa. Practically twinsies. Why don't you tell her your real name? She doesn't need to know that. Okay, D'Rai. D'Rai? Yeah, that's only because my daddy wanted to keep the lineage of the name. I'm the fourth D'Rai, Blackburn. Just keep it to fingers. Such a unique name. It's weird, though. I think I remember someone else named D'Rai. Really? Wait, what did you hear about them? Can't remember from where exactly, but it just sounds familiar. If you're the fourth, there must be others around? Not exactly. I'm the only one left. We lost a lot of members during the outbreak in 2009, and the year's following. The family has had to consolidate. Yerum is the only residence in use now. There were three, but the other two are currently vacant. All three households have to operate from here now. So there's one family, but three households? How does that even work? Well, each plays a special role. It's part of how we stay hidden and maintain a careful balance. See, the Amsles here are the political influencers seen in public more than anyone else. Ambitious, charismatic, intelligent. They protect the other families by holding positions of power where they can remain clean. Yeah, like they never do any of the messy work. Yeah, kind of uppity about it, too. Then on the opposite side of the spectrum are the Blackburns. Adaptable, disciplined, self-reliant, committed, observant. The ones that always remain in the shadows. My household. How is that not surprising? We rely on our anonymity to get into places that others can't. And specialize in acquiring information that isn't meant to be known. Spies and thieves. Oh, boy, she's got you pegged. Hey, hey, watch it. I mean, sure. You could look at us that way. I'd add liars to that list, too. Regardless of the household, everyone here has had to lie at some point to keep all this from being known. Yeah, but you are better at it than most. That just leaves your people. Someone's got to get their hands dirty to balance you all out. What do you have to say about us? A great many things. Lastly, and certainly not least, are the chisms. Bersidle, relentless, cunning, experienced, perfectionists, and often hold a lack of conscience. Hmm. Like Vincent said, they tend to deal with some of the darkest sides of the family duties. Things that require rougher skills or attention. Sometimes handling people that need to be dealt with. That makes a lot of sense. You left out charming. And it also apparently comes with a certain amount of ego as well. It's deserved. The messes we've had to get you all out of? Please. Now, there are some variations and exceptions. Like each family has their own enforcer. And most of the last names in their lineage have changed over time between marriages. Really, most of us go by aliases and public anyway. But that's everyone who makes up the family. And they all live here? No, no. Many are scattered out in the world, operating autonomously. Checking in when they can. Only a small group live here at Erum. And this residence is actually- Ours. Those under the chism's house. Erum means wrath if that gives you any hints about the type of people they are. You complain now, but- Wait, wait, wait, wait. That's three. What about the missing portrait you said they were for to begin with? The Dawson family lineage ended a very long time ago during the Civil War. In a way, we had our own Civil War. Oh. The other three didn't agree with how the Dawson's were operating. They deserved to die out. They were mainly involved in indentured servitude. Just say it. Slave trade. Our households firmly established rules about that practice. They didn't want to follow. It was one of the few times things got bloody between us. Is that what this painting is? Are they- Dueling. Oh. It used to be a very old family tradition. Last time it happened was against the Dawson's head of household. Dawson lost. And like that, their branch of the family tree was dissolved. Root and stem. Well, over 150 years ago, things changed a lot after that. It needed to. Outside of Vendettas, it was one of the few times a family member was ever allowed to kill another. Vendettas? Um... You want to respond to this one? We protect the lives of our family members. It's one of our core values. And if ever a life is taken from us, a Vendetta is established. And we cannot move on until it has been resolved. Which means you murder someone. Right? That sounds harsh. There's a bit more to it. My last Vendetta was for Simeon Eklund at the jail, who I already told you about. He not only killed two of our cousins, but he then proceeded to slaughter more innocents. People I would consider friends. I had to make things right, even if it cost me dearly. Had to? It's how we always worked. How would you react? What would you do if some thug killed your friend in cold blood, or do you even know? I hope you never have to be in that position. And what if you were wrong? Or made a mistake? We make sure. Vengeance isn't random in the family. There are strict rules against anything unsanctioned. As much as we've had bad dealings in the past, we still strive for the greater good. Heavy, right? I thought you were going to ease Vera in, not dump all of it on her at once. That was. This is only the start. Every bit is important to fully understand who we are, and why we do what we do. And the reason you can tell me all of this now is because I'm one of you two, since I'm blood? But you're more than that. Like I said, you're royalty. Practically a princess. You mean technically. Oh, shit. If you'll excuse me, I've got to go take care of this. I often debated whether or not to try to find a way to tell you before when you were in Westport. But I knew your mother wouldn't want you to have any part of this. Given what's happened, and what could come next, I thought it would be best to give you a choice. What do you mean? What choice? To become one of us. To learn. To train. To find your place in the family. And if you succeed, receive a ring of your own. Given what I've seen of your members so far, I don't know if I'd really want that. Because of me? Hey, I pulled you out of prim. Away from my friends? Taking me even further from my home against my will? Betraying my trust? Why would I want to be more like you? You don't understand how lucky you have it, do you? Vincent, you mind if I speak with Vera alone? Whatever. She's in your hands now. I'm exhausted. I'm going to bed. Look, Vera, I know this wasn't the best way for us to be introduced. Especially with how Vincent brought you on the plane. Honestly, I didn't know you were even coming until he sent us a message a few hours ago. But it doesn't change the fact of how grateful I am that you are here. Keeping an open mind, right? Do you know what's going on at home? My real home, Westport. Well, a few things here and there. Are they being attacked? Is my mom okay? Did my friends make it back? As far as I know, your mom is just fine. There have been some incidents, but Westport is secure and in the holding pattern. Nothing's happened since the train attack. And my friends? After you left Prim, there hasn't been much information on that place. So, I'm sorry. I have no idea where they might be. They're still back there. Damn, muck breakers aren't given up. With as much noise as those two are making, we might as well just shoot them. Not yet, but you're right. We have to think of something. What about the traps? Can't we use one of those? I mean, would they even do any good? Mucks seem like big trolls. Not much stopping them, but with the gravity of the fall into the pit with the spikes, that'll use their mass against them. Spike pit? Spike pit? Well, that was all you needed to say, man. Where was that again? Over here. Is it big enough for both? I guess we'll find out. Here, here it is. Cover the whole back up. Get behind the tree, but watch your step. We'll still need to flush them this way. Alright, make room. Make room. Get in tight. They have to come directly out of us. Oh man, this is gonna be close. Our backs are to the other traps. We're not gonna have any place to run if- At that point, you open firework, okay? Aim for the soft spots under the neck, like my grandma said. Shit. Does it see the pit? I don't know. No, no, no, no. Hey, ugly! Don't go around! Over here! Come on! Nice shot! Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Grab another rock. It's working. Keep pissing it off. Just a little further. Aim me! Right in the eye. Oh, you really pissed it off now. There it goes! Yes! One down. Alright, next one coming. Oh shit. It definitely saw the pit. This one's not dumb. Oh no, we need to find another hiding spot to- Oh, nice shot! Good job, Nakoma! That wasn't my knife. Oh, don't look at me. Don't move an inch or I'll drop you just the same. Weapons on the ground. Now! Fuck. I didn't even see her. Me neither. Was it hard with as much noise as you were making? No, I see you reaching for your little tube. Drop that too. Damn it. Okay, anyone else want to try something? Is that all the weapons you have on you? Yup. That's it. Good. Now go. Head back to wherever you came from. This land is occupied. Without our guns? I'm not going anywhere. Nick, is that- You can always handle your little intrusion in other ways. You already opened up a hole. We can keep filling it. I'm here for Vera. For who? I know she's in there. Probably with that asshole Vincent. You know him? Something tells me that you do. Don't you move. He took her from us. I'm here to get my friend back. And you know what? And no swamp infected, snare traps or little knives are going to stop me from doing that. God damn it. The game begins in 3, 2, 1. On March 20th, it's time for another twisted round of hide and seek. I'm not playing. As Ready or Not 2 hits Cinnabas. Okay, kill the sister. No, no, no, no, no, don't hurt her. From the directors of Scream Sex and Abigail. And so it begins. Run! Ready or Not 2, here I come. In Cinnabas March 20th, certificate 15, book tickets now. And now we continue with Descendants. I admire the loyalty to your friends. Putting them before your own aspirations and potential. But wanting to go back there to help, I don't think you fully understand the opportunities we're offering here. That I'd become one of you. So what? Why would I want that? What would that even mean? Like I said before, protection, resources, training. Westport already offers all of those to me as a guardian. Well, not like this they don't. We have deep connections. And what you learn here is definitely not standard military procedures. So what does that mean exactly? Ah, I knew that would pick your interest. I just want to know. What would be different? How to manage this world in ways you never thought possible. Dealing with those infected out there, that's relatively simple. But people, that takes an entirely different set of skills. You need to know how to get into the heads of those around you, understand what motivates them, what their vulnerabilities are. How to lie, when to lie, and to know when you're being lied to. Tactical driving, flying, boating, and all sorts of transportation, that might help you escape a dangerous situation. How to get into places that you're not meant to go, bypass locks or alarms. Learning how to blend in, disguise yourself, and if you ever needed to, disappear. And that would be just the start. I would be trained in all of those skills. Here, you would teach me? Among others, when you're born into the family, you normally start this process young. Some of us have been mastering these abilities our entire lives. I honestly never really used those of these skills until the old world died. But what I learned from the family, saved my life many times over. You should take advantage of all we have to offer, especially if events continue on the path they're going. Like what? You're expecting something worse to happen? Like, a war? Maybe. Maybe it's something else. It's hard for me to say, but change is coming. From my position, I hear rumors of what's going on. Whispers from members in the deep pockets. Little things by themselves may mean nothing, but together, that has me concerned. You have spies out there, reporting to you? We're everywhere. In Westport? Well, how do you think I've kept tabs on you from afar for all this time? You do have someone there. That's how you know so much. Who? Who has been spying on me? It hasn't just been one person. You being born into this family and me in my position as the patriarch, unfortunately, makes you a target. I only did this to make sure that you were safe. Who? You want me to trust you to understand all this, then I need to know. Their alias was the Mullen family. All three? Wait, Dean is one of you? Technically, he's not a full member, but still part of us. You're both considered blood-borne, meaning you haven't earned your rings yet. So this whole time, our so-called friends have been spying on us, then sending reports back to you? Your mother would never let me come close. What else could I do? You said I abandoned you, but I would never do that. I was forced to find another way. You're my daughter, my only daughter. No. Stop calling me that. Please, Vera, you said you'd give me a chance. I've given too many. Vera! Wait, is that Nick? Nick! Nick! Wow! How fancy is this place? She was taken here? Dang. Vera! Hands! Now, QI tests. Um, ow. Now you. Wait, wait, wait, wait, really? I mean, why you gotta... look, we're clean, we're clean. You don't have a choice. Oh boy. Ah! Here, whatever. You good? No? Huh? Vera! Would you stop shouting? People are sleeping upstairs. Don't go any further. Wait right here till these are done. Where is she? Take me to her now. You better let her go. Vera isn't a captive. I told you. Yeah, well, I'll believe it when I... Nick! Oh my God. Nick! I was so worried about you. You? You? You were worried about me? How did you even get here? We followed Vincent's plan. What? How? Why is Nokoma here? Well, she's the only one who knew how to fly. And I also wanted to help. Don't leave that brought out. QI tests are clear. Well, yeah, of course they are. I told you they were. Always good to hear it anyway. Hi, Vera. I'm Will. You remember me from... Prim? Of course I do. Where is everyone else? Alex, Bert and the others. Well, Alex got the old-timers out. We saw them take off at the airstrip heading back to Westport. And Dot probably went with them too. They made it. Thank God. What the hell are you wearing? Is that a dress? What the hell were you worried about? She seems fine to me. Look, you've had your little reunion. Now isn't the best time to... What are these people doing here? I caught them outside the perimeter, sir. Apparently they followed Vincent's plane here. All the way from Prim? Are you serious? It wasn't easy. Where is Vincent, actually? I got a few bones to pick and break with that guy. No, you don't. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Look, whatever. She was all that mattered anyway. Vera, come on. Let's get out of here. Gladly. No one is going anywhere. Oh, well, then you better bar the door, because you're not stopping us. You're not going to get any bones to that? Uh-huh. Yeah. And who the hell is this guy? Oliver Blackburn. I'm Vera's father. Oh, wait. What? That's bullshit. Family drama? You don't know the half of it. I am so confused right now. Who are you two exactly? Hi, William Walden. I lived in Prim. I'm the same. Sort of. Um, hello. What about me? Not curious? Pops? You? You, I already know. That temperament and attitude. You're Nicholas Tink. How'd you... Wait, what did you tell him, Vera? Nothing. I didn't. He's... How do I begin to explain any of this? Let's just say he knows things. He's in the position to. To make anything clearer? There's only so much we can say to outsiders, but you better show him some respect. Thank you. That's enough. Just want to make sure they know you're in charge. You're in charge of what? Like you got some type of special club or something? All that matters is this is our home, and you shouldn't have been allowed in here. I'm sorry, sir. They were making a lot of noise outside of the gate, bringing infected in, and then they knew Vera already and then... Yeah, I get it. But now I have to find some way to deal with this. I already gave you the answer. Let us go and we'll leave you alone. I mean, you walked out on Vera a long time ago, right? Should have no problem with us doing the same thing to you. Are you just going to run off in the middle of the night? In the heart of Louisiana swamps? You wouldn't even last till morning. Yeah, you don't know that. Nick, he may be right. Why don't you stay in the guest house until morning? By then, I'll have decided what our next steps should be. Really? Well, these are your friends, right, Vera? The ones you spoke of? Mostly just Nick. Gee, thanks. I get it. We barely met. Now that you know they're okay, doesn't that change your position? It might. What is he talking about? Oliver wanted me to come here. So Vincent brought Vera to become one of you. That's it. Excuse me? We never said it. Look, it's getting late. Why don't we talk more in the morning? You must be exhausted from a very long day and all that traveling. You have no idea what today's been like. Not to mention these people are filthy. Vera. Look, I don't trust this guy. She is my daughter, and you are her friends, which makes you my guests. And you'll be treated like it with all the amenities we have to offer. Gourmet meals from our chef, laundry facilities, clean bedding, medical aid, even hot showers. I mean, if we have to stay. Do you got a library? Did you just hear him say we got a gourmet chef, and Belle here is asking about books? I went through practically everything we had in Prim. Would be nice to read something new for a change. We have plenty, and you're welcome to them. Not like anyone else here besides me touches them. Look, I'm still not buying any of this. Does seem too good to be true. Tameo Daniels said Dona Frentes. I need it. Well, you weren't lying about your interest in books. Yeah, yeah. I swear, as long as you are in our house, you are safe. Well, is that good enough? Can we go to bed finally? Nick, I know this all seems crazy, and I'm hesitant too, but they have taken care of me. She doesn't look like a captive. Not on that fancy dress anyway. Thanks, it's mine. Um, are we good now? Can I use your bathroom? Still not feeling so good. The guesthouse has one, extra clothes to change into, and it's stocked with whatever you might need. I'll take you there and make sure you get settled. Nick, are you okay with this? You sure that he's really your dad? But, we don't look alike? He is. It's complicated. Very complicated. I mean, look, only if you say so, Vera. You're the only one that I trust here. I'm just honestly glad that you're okay. Is that it? Can we go? You know what? No, I'm not done. Where are you hiding that backstabbing fuck, Vincent? Where the hell is he at? Nick, Nick, I've been wanting to bring Vera here for some time. Vincent may not be the most pragmatic, but he knew it was best to come here. Uh-huh. Okay, pops, I'll be pragmatic right to his face! Oh, I want to see that. Let me know when it happens. But for now, would you just follow me? I need to escort you to the guesthouse. It's detached from the main building. Oh, I really need to go to the bathroom, Nick. Alright, alright, alright, alright. Fine. I'll beat Vincent's ass in the morning then. I'm sure you will. Good night. Oh, and Nick, I'm very sorry to hear about your father. Him? Yeah, that's all good. It was a long time ago. No. I meant Michael. What? Oh, shit. Wait, what? What about Michael? Michael Cross? We're talking about here? You didn't know? Oh, god. Wait, what happened then? What happened to my dad? I shouldn't be the one to tell you this. Nick, I... Someone tell me something! I'm sorry, Nick. He died. He... He... what? To be continued in the next episode of Where Alive? Descendants.
