Summary

This episode of The Leviathan Chronicles follows a dramatic rescue mission at sea where the research vessel Inveneos crew must save their captain from a flooded submersible during a catastrophic storm, then pursue kidnappers holding their scientists hostage across the Indian Ocean.

Insights
  • Crisis management requires rapid decision-making under extreme pressure, with crew members improvising solutions when standard protocols fail
  • Sabotage can be embedded deep in system architecture; the crew discovered malicious code inserted 36 hours prior that locked their navigation systems
  • Resource constraints force strategic prioritization—the team must pursue a rescue mission with damaged equipment and limited operational capabilities
  • Deception and hostage situations require psychological assessment and negotiation tactics to identify leverage points and defect opportunities

The Inveneos Expeditions A Leviathan Chronicles story Chapter 11 The Rescue Going to Full Throttle Captain, do you read us Captain Tolly? Tolly, come in, do you copy? Still have four minutes until System reboot. Captain, Over 3-3! Incoming! Praise for Wave Impact! You've got to get Tolly out of the Ajax too! There's no power! Not getting any reading from Ajax! The whole compartment is flooded! Build ground even if we get the suit open! We activate village pumps to get the subway train! Not until the system finishes rebooting! We need to hurry! We're gonna fuckin' lose Tolly! Not on my watch! Branch, this is Baluga. I'm going after the cow. Yuki, you can't. You've got no room to maneuver. Fucking watch me. I can make this sub-disco dance underwater if I want. Activating thrusters! Come on, baby. Yuki tapped on the electric thrusters and felt the Baluga move underneath it. The inside of the left cartoon was still completely flooded and debris was floating everywhere. Shit! Leaving the mini-sub with painful, little room to maneuver. Damn it! There's a lot of debris floating around. Everything that wasn't tied down in Sub-A is swimming around in here. Be careful. You don't want to get anything sucked into the jet. You'll be sucked again and we'll need a drill to get you out. Better make a diamond tip because the viewport is 10 inches of borosilicate glass. And then I hope you brought a pee bottle. Can you see anything? Is there any visibility? Negative. This sucks, but I know Ajax is about 20 meters off the port bow. I'm hitting holes, Jax. The Baluga pushed forward, allowing items to bounce off the giant half-dome viewport of the sub. I see him! Then, out of the murky seawater, Yuki could make out the silhouette of the massive anthropomorphic dive suit. Do you see Tully? Is he conscious? Tully's eyes remain closed inside Ajax, which was completely filled with seawater. Captain doesn't look conscious. We need bilge pumps, Abby. What's the time on that reboot? Three minutes. That's too long. Gibson, how fast can you get to the port transitway? Back. Move your ass. Make sure to bring him up. Why? We're all gonna get wet. I'm about to drain Sub-A and take Ajax with it. We need to save the captain. Holy shit. I'm coming. Right now. Hold on, Yuki. Gibson bolted out of the engine room and sprinted to the transitway on the left pontoon where Sub-A was located. On the other side of the airlock, Yuki activated the two articulator arms of the Baluga as she carefully maneuvered closer to Ajax. You're hanging there, Captain. You don't get to see goodbye yet. The Baluga's grasp snapped open and snatched the red recovery hook on the back of Ajax. Bridge, I've got Ajax. I'm dragging the suit towards the airlock. Yuki, what's Tully's status? Is he conscious? I can't tell from this angle, but his eyes are shut and I'm not seeing any motion. Gibson, you ready? Ready. I'm outside the airlock. And you better hold on to something because you're about to drink from the fire hose. Yuki's fingers danced across the Baluga's control panel. Using her left hand to hold the Baluga steady, she used her right to reach for the airlock clamp leading to the transitway. Dammit. Keep us steady, Chief. I can't get a clean grip. We're trying up here. Hurry, Yuki. As the Inveneos pitched and rolled with the waves, everything inside the sub bay was shaken up like the insides of a snow globe. Yuki did her best to compensate, finally getting the Baluga's remaining articulator to latch on to the airlock doors. Yuki, I'm outside the sub bay hatch. Standing by. Copy. Hey, Chief, get ready to hold the helm steady because a shit-lit of water is about to go from one side of the boat to the other. Permission granted to spill your drink. Just get Tully out. Roger. Carefully, Yuki positioned Ajax against the heavy pressurized door leading into the transitway of the Inveneos. Yuki, how are you going to open the pressure hatch? Strapping in and pretending I'm a goddamn cork. Yuki quickly pulled down her harness straps, cinching them tight to her seat, and pointed the lateral thrusters in opposite directions before snapping her hand down on the throttle. Come on. The Baluga began to spin left on its central axis slowly at first, but soon the circular pressure lock eased. Turn! And as it turned, so did the minis. Go go make it! Until it was upside down, with Yuki hanging down, strapped to her pilot's chair. It's working. Holy shit, Yuki, it's working. There's water coming out the hatch. As the airlock loosened and the Baluga started to rotate faster, more and more seawater flooded out of sub bay and into the transitway. Almost there, Yuki. Here it comes! The sub bay pressure door flew open, releasing thousands of gallons of water to rush outward. The Ajax suit, which was propped against the door, was swept forward into the transitway by the rushing water. Uh, I have Ajax, Yuki. I've got the captain. But we gotta stop the water from coming through. I can't close the hatch door. There's too much water rushing out. I got you, Gibson. I'm plugging the hole. You get the captain out of the damn dive suit. Okay, time to get stuck again. Still hanging upside down in her pilot's chair, Yuki released the articulators holding the airlock door. She pulsed the Baluga back a few feet and with one swift motion, jammed the throttle's heart and shot the mini-sub forward directly into the transit hatchway. Yuki, you did it! You did it! The water's easing up. We got the captain through. You're going to drain the suit. Gibson pulled the quick release clasp on Ajax, bringing the atmosphere of dive suit open at the waist. He pulled Tully's limb body out. Gibson, this is the colon. Gibson, do you have Tully? Do you copy? Is he breathing? I copy. The captain is unconscious. No breath, weak pulse. You need to get the captain to the medical bay right away. Is he mobile? Did you carry him? The Navy makes strong men. I got him. I got him. Meet you in the med bay in 60 seconds, Makaelyn. Hurry! Gibson slung Tully over his shoulder and lifted him out of the transitway. He hurried to the medical bay of the Invenius, where he was met by Oberlin and Makaelyn. He's got to hurry. He's been out for almost six minutes. Move. Move! Get him on the table. Come on. Starting CPR. Come on, captain. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. Get the defibrillator charged. Charging in 200 joules. Come on. Fight for me. He's still not breathing. I've got no pulse. Hand me the paddles. Come on, captain. Clear! Clear! Got nothing. No pulse. Still in V-thib? Go to 300. Charging to 300 joules. Skip back. Clear! Clear! We need compression. On it. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. Oh, boom. Give me the epinephrine and the O2 tanks. Copy. Here. Danish, are we losing him? Tully, can you hear me? Three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. Tully, Tully, Tully. Hey, everyone. This is Kristoff. I hope you've been enjoying the Inveneos expeditions, and I just want to say thank you for coming along on this adventure with us. We've got one more episode left in the season, and I couldn't be more excited for you to hear how it all comes together. But before we get there, I wanted to take a moment to tell you about another show that's made a big impact in the world of audio drama, and it's been a huge inspiration for me personally. It's a show called We're Alive, created by Casey Whalen. His epic show is in its final two seasons right now, and you should really check it out. Casey and I both started building our shows back around 2008, when podcasting was still in its early days, before most people even knew what a podcast was or even how to listen to it. But we both believed in the power of telling stories through immersive sound. And over the years, Casey has built one of the biggest, boldest, and most beloved audio dramas out there. We're Alive, and we're live. We're Alive is a post-apocalyptic survival story rooted in realism, set against the backdrop of a zombie outbreak. What makes it stand out is this gritty, ground atone that's drawn from Casey's own military background. It's visceral, it's intense, and it's incredibly well constructed. Casey's a great friend of our show, and he's become a great friend of mine. Right now, he's released a brand new season called We're Alive Descendants. It's an incredible continuation of the universe he started, and it's available right now wherever you get your podcasts. I highly recommend you check it out, and I know you won't be disappointed. And now, here's a short preview of We're Alive Descendants. Okay, uh-oh, what did I do? What do I do? Will, just focus. We can't lose Baron. Oh, hey you. You're finally awake back there. What the hell have you done? Where's Nick? The dominant species in this biome are the muckraker, solitary species, and incredibly territorial. Are you sure? It's gonna be safe. We will have casualties along the way. I saw him! He's behind the rock down the cliff! But we don't have any other choice. Let me go! Get away! Why are you doing this? Season 2 premieres February 25th on all podcast channels. The war is over, and both sides lost. Kingdoms were reduced to cinders, and armies scattered like bones in the dust. Now the survivors claw to what's left of a broken world, praying the darkness chooses someone else tonight. But in the shadow dark, the darkness always wins. This is old-school adventuring, and it's most cruel. Your torch ticks down in real time, and when that flame dies, something else rises to finish the job. This is a brutal rules-light nightmare, with a story that emerges organically, based on the decisions that the characters make. This is what it felt like to play RPGs in the 80s, and man, it is so good to be back! Join the Glass Cannon podcast as we plunge into the shadow dark, every Thursday night at 8pm Eastern on youtube.com slash the glass cannon, with the podcast version dropping the next day. See what everybody's talking about, and join us in the dark! King Bashir's white SUV flew across the dirt road leading into Luhane. Over a third of the camp was now engulfed in flames, and its residents were running frantically to save themselves, their families, and their possessions. Few saw that King's blood smeared across the hood of the truck, as it raced into the village. When the SUV arrived at King Bashir's mansion, there were no guards standing sentry at the gate. It was clear that order had dissipated at the camp. Salah leapt out of his seat and opened the rear door to help Bashir out of the car. The wound from the calahorn that perforated the King's abdomen was still gaping, and the back seat was drenched in blood. Bashir's eyes were only half open as Salah got his neck under the portly man's arm, and strained to help him get through the front door of the main house. Immediately, the stench of stale food struck Salah's nose, and he could clearly see a large, sloppily set table crowded with wine, cans of soda, and ironed in the food. Salah, you must get to my phone. I can use it to call the Qasodian. They will help me. They will come for the prisoners. Why would they be interested in our prisoners? It doesn't matter. These men have affairs around the world. They have a doctor, a strange doctor, but he can save me. I just need the damn phone, Salah. Salah padded Bashir down and found the cell phone in the man's pants. Here, I have it, my king. What number should I dial? Idiot, who will... The real phone! The one I used to call the people that I answered to. Bashir, I... This is your fault, Salah. My fault? My king? You should have stopped, Kassur. What? Kassur! What? You... Wait a minute. Kassur, take that prisoner's from the territory I gave you. How can you say that? It was your decision to give Kassur the hostages. It was you who... Shut up, you fool! I don't want to hear your excuses. Get my damn phone, the red one, in my den. Salah followed the sight line of Bashir's fingers to the heavy desk in the corner of the room. Harry, Harry, you fool! He raced over and ripped open the top drawer to find loose cigarettes, papers, small packets of cocaine, cargo manifests, and a small red mobile phone. Curiously, when Salah flipped the phone open, there was only a single round button inside. I need that phone. You incompetent, innocent! And you, you are weak. Power. It must be taken, you are weak. It's never given or hunted. Weak! Coming, my king. The phone. Give it to me. Quick, let him. This phone speaks to people who own this camp? Yes! They must be very powerful. Of course, idiot. They own hundreds of camps like this around the world. And they know about our prisoners. Damn phone! I need the doctor! No, my king. What? You don't need the phone. You fucking idiot. Give me the phone. I command it. And you don't need the doctor. What are you talking about? It's a lie. Salah calmly walked over to the dining table and picked up one of the large steak nuns. What are you doing? Give me the phone, Salah. I am your king. That's a second lie. Your name is Omar Bashir. And we both know you are no king. You are just a fat, lazy man who lies. I warn you, Bashir. I will punish you if you tell me three lies. Salah walked closer to King Bashir holding the knife in his left hand. Are you crazy? I am not crazy. What? Not anymore. You're tough now. You think you're like Casho. Huh? You think you'll be king. You're nothing, Salah. Nothing! That is your third lie. Salah looked at the red phone in one hand and the knife in the other. Goodbye, Omar Bashir. Salah dropped the phone and used his free hand to stab Bashir again and again. Now you can see. I am not as weak as you thought. Oberlin, give me the adrenaline. I've got 10 cc's. Make it 20. Still no pulse. Get the defab recharge. Take it to 300. That'll kill him. If it doesn't save him, Oberlin, I need that adrenaline now. Here. McCallan, plunge this arrange into Tully's sternum and snatch the paddles out of Oberlin's hand. Get that oxygen ready. O2 ready. Everyone clear. We've got one shot at this. Come on, Tully. Fight! Gibson, now. One, two, three, four. Oh, we got him back. Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ, Tully. Holy shit. He's breathing. McCallan, I've got a boss. Captain. Is the ship okay? Tully, my God, you did it, McCallan. Tully, you're back. Oh, God, Tully. We almost lost the ship and the captain. Thank God. Both look worse for wear, but I don't give a shit. This is a sub. Yuki. Just take it easy, Tully. You're okay. Just breathe. Yeah, just breathe. Let's keep that O2 on him. Let's make sure his lungs are clear and get an oximeter to monitor Tully's hemoglobin. After he's restored and rested, we can do an acupuncture. Six hours later. Hey, you're doing okay? Yeah, yeah, I'm okay. I was able to close my eyes for about 30 minutes. Good. I know it's been pretty intense the last 24 hours, but at least we're out of that storm. Yeah, well, don't breathe easy yet. I got a feeling the next 24 hours might be worse. That's why I think it's important we talk to the crew. Come on. I've asked everyone to come to the library. McCallan, how's the captain? Is he okay? What's the latest? Hey, guys. Tully is doing okay, but loss of consciousness is no joke. We're keeping him on oxygen and I gave him a sedative to induce sleep, but he's going to be groggy for the next few days. The good news is I think he's going to be all right. You did a great job saving him, Yuki. Gibson and I wouldn't have been able to revive him if you hadn't done such quick thinking. Piloting the beluga in a flooded compartment was like parallel parking a tractor in an elevator. Pretty damn impressive. You saved Tully's life. You too, Gibson. Thanks, chief, but what do we do now? Well, that depends. Abby, would you like to give us an update on systems? Sure. We've completed the system reboot and all the ship's operations are back online. I've got the bilge pumps working overtime and we've got almost all seawater pumped out of the sub bay and the left transitway. I noticed we picked up another five knots with all the water drained out. And we were able to get Ajax dried out and back into its drop hanger. That's pretty good news. Well, it's not all good news. What do you mean? Well, I was going through all of our system software and I found something weird. What's that? I was compiling all the Invenio source code trying to figure out how we could have lost navigation and systems on a triple redundancy architecture. And what did you find? Buried, super deep was an erroneous code script tied to our GPS coordinates that pushed the ship into a locked system diagnostics as soon as we left the Red Sea. We were programmed to get stuck in Trident mode. What was the purpose of that? Didn't you write the code? I didn't. I checked the timestamp and the code was inserted 36 hours ago. That's exactly when we pulled out of Jeddah. And it was exactly the last time anyone laid eyes on Samantha Kells. She did that to us? I knew I didn't trust that bitch. Did you pull the code out? Yeah, yeah, I did. But while our systems are back online, we also took some pretty bad structural damage. How bad? Bad. Both transit ways took a real pounding in that storm. We have hull fractures on both struts so Trident mode is out of the question until we can do repairs in port. Well, monohull is better in a way in case we hit her off seas. I'm not done. The beluga is inoperable from all the damage she took getting thrown around Subbay, not to mention the fact that we lost the hummingbird to the decadus. So we're not exactly running in tip-top shape, which leads us to the question. The question is... What do we do now? What do you mean? I mean, are we really ready and equipped to launch a marine rescue? McCalland, I think you're the one that has to feel this question. What's the latest intel on the Levi... Um, I mean, on the hostages? The latest readings we're getting is that there's still an active beacon, but it's growing closer to rounding the Horn of Africa. They're running! Exactly. Someone is trying to get somewhere in a hurry and they're trying to take my people with them. I hear all that, McCalland. I do, but if whoever took your scientists, or whatever they are, decides to put up a fight, how the hell are we gonna stop them? I mean, we don't have any... Before you say it, no, we don't have any guns. But what we do have is one of the Navy's best ROV operators. Oh, shucks. The smartest marine engineer I've ever met, the bravest submersible pilot, the best chef at sea, and most of all, we have one thing that nobody else has. What's that, chief? We have the Inveneos. Now, let's go get your people, McCalland. And I've got a plan. Okay, here's what we're going to do. I'm in U.P. and I want the two of you to gather up all the wrongs in our room. The Horn of Africa 150 miles south of the Horn of Africa. Keijo, do you read? I have a radar contact. 25 miles out of a ship. It looks big. I see it. It is heading for us. You think military? No. It must be something else. It can't be military. The US patrols are 500 miles west of us. Maybe they changed course. Or maybe we found another ship we can take. Something we could sail all the way to Dubai. Did you secure the arms before we left? Yes, I have a Kalashnikov and five hand grenades. Get ready to repel anyone who tries to stop us. Remember, we are still in Somali waters. You think they are looking for the prisoners? I don't know. Maybe, but we have to be safe. Put all the prisoners downstairs and in the cargo hold. We don't want anyone to see their faces and get suspicious. I'll catch you. Ahado placed the handheld radio back on its receiver beside the helm of the 45-foot wooden fishing trawler she captained. She threw a quick nod to Kassho, who stood next to Sinclair on the speedboat that was running alongside her ship. I heard that. You said there's a boat coming. There is, isn't there? They're looking for us. It's true. Ahado turned to face the five Leviathan citizens who sat with their wrists zip-tied behind her. No one is coming for you. William, the smallest of the immortals stood up. What's true? You're lying. Someone is coming. Someone is coming. I can feel it, can't you? I have hope. I know it. If I don't get to have hope, neither do you. All of you! It's time to go downstairs. You're scared. I can see it. We all can. You're scared and you're running away. You destroyed your own home and now you have nothing left. Take this! I destroyed my own prison that healed me. Now get down below the... How dare you! You fucking murderous! Edward! No, I won't tolerate it anymore! Just in human! You're a criminal! We know you're running. You're scaring away like frightened rats and we're not afraid of you. Not anymore. Oh, not afraid of me. So brave you are. Maybe you're not afraid of me. Let's see if you're afraid of this arena. Ahato filed a surprise punch into Edward's stomach and let Mr. Front Kick knocking him over the side of the trawler, leaving him flailing in the Indian Ocean with bound hands. It adds color to the water. No! No! No! All of you, look! What your friend? And when the shark's gone, you should be afraid, because I'm the worst shark that you've ever met in your life. Now get down below. Move! Move! Get into the hole! Look! Rocketing down from the low cloud base, a sleek delta-winged drone shot across the horizon, dipping its left wing to execute a sweeping arc a thousand feet above the pirate ships. What do we have, Gibson? Two vessels. Looks like a speedboat and some sort of trawler. They're still pretty close to each other on the same heading. Manpower? We've got a visual and a driver with a speedboat. Mail. Looks big. One other captain on the fishing boat. Looks even bigger. Two people? Two boats this far off the Somali coast? Something doesn't add up. Hold on, guys. Info-ret shows there's more bodies on board. Down in the holes. I can't get an exact read, but definitely four or five. It's them. They're trying to hide the scientists down below. What's our time to intercept? Fifteen minutes or less. I've been pushing the Cyclone Drives as hard as we can. We can't let them get away. Then it's time to get ready. I'll take the helm. Abbey, Yuki, you know what to do. The Orcas are fueled. And I gathered up all the dock lines and cargo netting I could find in storage. Well done. Good luck, ladies. Launch when ready. Moments later, Abbey and Yuki sprinted across the right transit way and entered the tender bay of the Inveneos. They each threw their legs over the Orcas. The Inveneos has specialized personal water crafts and fired up the engines. Orca one, ready to launch. Orca two, ready to launch. All systems green. Launch port open. Now, go catch our people. Yes, Chief. Count on it, Chief. Each woman pressed the large wall-mounted red button beside the Orcas, sending each craft shooting out of the right side of the Inveneos. We're waterborne, Chief. All systems checked. Excellent. I'm sending over coordinates to your navcom. You've got about 20 knots of speed over the Inveneos, so we'll be right behind you. I'll radio as soon as we get a visual. Wavechaps, not too bad. Let's go to full throttle. Roger that. Yuki and Abbey accelerated their Orcas to full speed and quickly began to lose sight of the Inveneos behind them. The water craft arose and fell, but the ocean swells as they shot across the Indian Ocean towards their tarnes. How much further, Abbey? We should have contact in 30 seconds. As we get closer, let's form up into a flank position. Roger. And Abbey, I think we should... hey, contact. It's an o'clock low. You should... It's our targets. Okay, you know the plan. Getting all the ropes ready to deploy and drop. And make sure you release the cargo netting first. We want our dock line sitting as close to the surface as we can get them. Got it. I'll flank right and you go left. I'll wait for your signal to cross. As each Orca powered over the wave crests, both women could see the two Somali boats in the near distance. Ready? Now, cross! Abbey and Yuki yanked on the handlebars, sending the two Orcas veering towards each other in front of the oncoming vessels. Deploying the nets! Reaching behind into the rear panniers, the women tossed out the cargo netting they retrieved from the storage bays of the Inveneos. That's out! Great job! We need one more pass for the dock lines. I've got the rope in my hand. Remember, you've got to get in close to take these props out. Ready to cross again? Now! Again, the Orcas weave towards one another, this time even closer to the path of the oncoming speedboat and trawler. Sinclair! Sinclair, get up on deck! Hurry! Sinclair rushed out of the cabin of Kashi's speedboat and stood next to the captain as the Orcas sped closely by. Look! Kashio shoved a pair of binoculars at Sinclair. Are these your people? I'm not sure, but I don't recognize the watercraft. They look like cyclecraft on the water. Those ships are too small to be out this far. Well, we should take them out. Eliminate them. We don't want any witnesses. Our chances of unlocking the Leviathan accounts are better if fewer people are made aware of our existence. They're coming closer. Hand me the rifle. Ahado! Open fire! Shit! These fuckers are firing! Come on! Break up! Break up! Get to a safe distance! Trying! Abby, you okay? Yeah, I don't think I'm hit. You? My stern has a few bullet holes, but I think I can make it back. Invinios! We are taking fire! Repeat, we are taking fire! Sounds like we might have found who we're looking for. Orca one, Orca two. Get out of there. Return to Invinios. We copy, Chief. Shit! Don't have to tell me twice. Captain, was a kidding about things getting rough. Damn straight. Who the hell are these scientists? Damn it! Did you get them? Too far! They're out of range. They're beating up! Follow them! No witnesses! Ahado, maintain your course. We are going after the Jetskies. No! Kessho, I'm coming with you! That's a mistake. She has the Darkwater Girls Serena. We can't lose her. She can give us the access codes we need when we get to Dubai. Ahado, maintain your course and keep the prisoners locked and hidden. We still need them. What the fuck? Maintain your course. Your boat is too slow to catch them. We will eliminate the enemies and catch up with you. Keep your course. Catch your Alps. They're getting away. They won't get far. I have the fastest boat in Portland. Kassho threw the throttle forward, sending a spray of seawater erupting from the twin outboard engines. The speedboat launched forward when suddenly the propellers became enmeshed in the cargo netting and dock lines laid down by the Orcas. The engines are jammed. The prop is tangled up in these ropes. Reverse the throttle! I am trying! Come on! Dammit! We're stuck! What do you mean we're stuck? I mean the engine is jammed. We can't turn on our props. We're dead in the water. We can't be. We can't be! I'll call Ahado. I'll have a circle back to grab us. Captain Kassho reached for the radio, but Sinclair snatched it out of his hand. I wouldn't do that if I were you. What are you talking about? Give me the fucking radio to call Ahado! Dammit! Look! Charging over the horizon, a 200-foot vessel rose higher and higher, as the ship rapidly approached Kassho's speedboat. They fucking found us! Both men took note of the advanced radar domes and scientific equipment that could be seen on its deck. Do you know this boat? No, no I do not, but they are looking for Leviathan survivors, not for pirates. We need Ahado. Whatever that boat is, it is coming for us. We need to get out of here quickly too. Kassho, listen to me and listen very closely. Take your rifle and point it at my head. Now, pretend that I'm your hostage. Do it quickly! We'll both be hostages if we don't get off this boat. I am calling Ahado. No, you fool. If you call Ahado, then they'll capture us, all of us. And if they are able to question the others, then they'll learn that I've defected. Keep Ahado and the others as far away as you can. Then you'll have us be captured? No, I'd have you capture whatever boat this is and drive it and us straight to Dubai to plunder the Leviathan accounts. But in order to do that, you'll need to use the only leverage you have. Me! Now point your fucking gun at my head and make sure you make them believe. How can you be so sure, Sinclair? What if they try to kill us first? Think, my friend. They dropped nets, not bombs. Bombs! If they're from the Leviathan, they won't be killers. Not like you, Kasha. Now, take me as your hostage and then take their boat. You're a pirate, after all. Time to do your job, man. Here they come. The Invenios was 200 meters off the port side of Kasha's boat when it cut its engines and slowly glided toward the speedboat. This is the Invenios. Drop your weapons and release your hostages. I didn't help. The hostage is mine. I'll kill him before I give him to you. Please, no. I swear, I'll kill him. Please, help me. It's been barbaric. I have demands and if you want to see him alive or anyone else you are planning to search for, I want to get paid. You hear me? I just want to go home. Please, help me. Get in my waters. Give me what I am due or I swear I will kill him. Who is killing anyone today? We're willing to discuss our terms. Who are you? This is the Invenios and you're holding our friends. Friends, they're looking for us. That means they know about Leviathan. Get us onboard, Kasha. It's critical that they see me before the others. I want to talk to your captain. I'm on sheet over in St. Clair and I feel a lot better about being friends if you put your gun down. Don't fuck with me. You need to pay or I'll shoot him dead. If you kill our friends, we'll destroy your boat and you'll have a long way back ashore. Tell them we need medical aid. You have a doctor on your ship? Yes, yes, we have a doctor and we have medicine on him. We can help you put your gun down. I give the orders, not you. Tell your doctor to meet me on your boat, on the bridge, with your crew. There was a pause and for a moment all that could be heard were the sounds of waves lapping against the hulls of the two opposing boats. We accept your terms. Come on board to help you and discuss any ransom. Do not hurt your hostage. We're going to approach your ship now. No tricks. No tricks, Captain. Stand at guard. The Inveneos carefully pulled alongside the speedboat and lowered its ramp, allowing Cascio and St. Clair to board. They moved awkwardly and slowly as Cascio kept the muzzle of his rifle pressed against St. Clair's temple. I'm Flight Officer Gibson Donahue. I'm here to escort you to the bridge. Oh, oh, thank you. Thank you. Thank you for saving us. It's been such an ordeal, you know. Such dreadful... Shut your mouth! You... You say your name is Gibson? Yes. Gibson, look into my eyes. Look! Gibson stared into Cascio's eyes and saw the raw rage and fury. This man? His life means nothing to me. If you or anyone tries anything, I kill him. I kill you. Everybody dies. Do you understand, Gibson? I understand, Captain. No one is going to try anything. We just want our friends back. Please. Gibson led Cascio and St. Clair through the main corridor and up the central staircase to the bridge. Cascio scanned the interior intently, searching for weapons, but was instead amazed at the ship's design and its obvious technological prowess. When Gibson led Cascio and St. Clair onto the bridge, Oberlin and the rest of the Inveneos crew stood at attention. I'm Oberlin St. Clair. I'm the one you spoke to. What country is this boat? We're not military, if that's what you're asking. We're a research boat. You said you needed medical attention. I'm a doctor. You're a doctor, eh? Can you trade gunshot words? Depends on the severity of the wound. Tell me who's been shot. All of you, if you don't get down on your knees now. I said now! Hey! Hey! What the hell are you doing? Oberlin, don't! Let's just do what he says. Yes, yes, let's just do what he says and get through this nightmare. You're fucking crazy if you think I'm going to let you take me. It's okay Oberlin, come on, let's listen. We don't want anyone to get hurt. Listen to the woman. Oberlin exchanged a reluctant look with McCallan and both slowly dropped to their knees beside the helm of the ship. One by one, each crew member of the Inveneos did the same. Gun or no gun, ship or no ship. If you hurt any member of my crew, I'll make it the worst mistake you've ever made in your life. We all make mistakes, Oberlin said clear. Leave him alone. He is not the one you want to talk to. Oh, why not? You want the person that's going to pay you for that hostage you're holding. And that person is me. And who are you? My name is McCallan Orsall and you're holding one of my people. I'm going to pay you or give you what you want, but first you're going to tell me who the hell you are. My name is Captain Sonika Sho, and I'm taking command of the ship. You have been listening to the Inveneos Expeditions, a Leviathan Chronicle story. Written and created by Christof Laputka. You might know it as the time when Bridger Jen takes place or the time when Jane Austen wrote her books. But the Regency Era was also an explosive time of social change, sex scandals and maybe the worst king in British history. And on the Vulgar History Podcast we're going to be looking at the balls, the gowns and all the scandal of the Regency Era. Vulgar History is a women's history podcast and our Regency Era series will be focusing on the most rebellious women of this time. That includes Jane Austen herself who is maybe more radical than you might have thought. We'll also be talking about queer icons like Anne Lister, scientists like Mary Anning and Ada Lovelace as well as other scandalous actresses, royal mistresses, rebellious princesses and other lesser known figures who made history happen in England in the Regency Era. Listen to Vulgar History wherever you get podcasts. The Regency Era is a women's history podcast and we're going to be looking at the balls, the gowns and the gowns.
