Host Pete analyzes President Trump's 32-day military operation speech against Iran, critiquing its messaging strategy and delivery while discussing Kansas City's proposed mini liquor bottle ban and Kansas's 23-hour bar opening bill for the World Cup.
Insights
- Presidential speeches targeting uninformed audiences require different pacing and messaging priorities than those for engaged followers—leading with pain points (gas prices) rather than context builds credibility
- Short-term economic pain from military operations can be justified through long-term security framing, but political messaging must acknowledge immediate citizen concerns to maintain support
- Geographically-targeted alcohol sales restrictions risk legal challenges on discrimination grounds and may simply shift consumer behavior rather than address root causes of urban violence
- Hyperpartisan political environments prevent good-faith policy agreement even when both parties previously aligned on core threats (Iran's nuclear capability)
- Legislative priorities reveal misaligned incentives—Kansas prioritizes tourism revenue (World Cup bar hours) over constituent needs like property tax reform
Trends
Declining attention spans and 24/7 news cycles compress perception of time, making 32-day operations feel like months to the publicRegulatory approaches to urban violence shifting from enforcement to supply-side restrictions on legal businessesPolitical tribalism overriding policy consistency—opposition parties reflexively opposing prior consensus positions when implemented by rivalsEconomic messaging in military operations increasingly critical as oil markets immediately price in geopolitical riskState legislatures using temporary event-based legislation as revenue tools with unclear sunset provisions

I know I'm starting to feel like an old man. I was so ticked off this morning. I get to work. I get to the office and I realize I left the coffee on the ledge in the garage and then I was not a happy guy. But you know what? I am happy this morning because today is the start of year nine of this show here on KCMO talk radio. So we're fired up about that 604 on a Thursday morning. Thanks for joining us on KCMO talk radio. We'll get into more of that throughout the morning on 95 7 FM. But last night you heard it right here on KCMO. The president of the United States addressed the nation for the first time since Operation Epic Fury got underway. And overall it was fine. But here's the thing. The speech was not intended for you and it was not intended for me. And I don't mean that because of maybe your ideology. There's plenty of you listening who may not agree. Hopefully don't agree with everything I say. I mean. My own wife doesn't agree with everything I say. So why would you. But even if you're like minded to me the speech was not for us. The speech was for people who have not been paying attention. The speech was for people who were normally watching Survivor last night. Or whatever the voice is on season forty seven and a half. That's that's who the speech was for people not paying attention. There was really nothing new last night. All right we might go a couple more weeks but we're not going to tell anybody how long we're going to go. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There's nothing new. There was some piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston piston We will continue until our objectives are fully achieved. Thanks to the progress we've made, I can say tonight that we are on track to complete all of America's military objectives shortly, very shortly. We are going to hit them extremely hard over the next two to three weeks. We're going to bring them back to the Stone Ages, where they belong. In the meantime, discussions are ongoing. Regime change was not our goal. We never said regime change, but regime change has occurred because of all of their original leaders' death. They're all dead. So he was literally telling people who didn't even really know what was going on, what's been going on for the last 32 days. That was the point of it. It was for the guy who literally woke up from a coma yesterday for the first time in over a month. That was the speech. That's who it was for. Not literally a coma, but the person who just doesn't pay attention. And I know you're sitting here right now, you're listening, and you're like, well, who's not paying attention? Most people, most people aren't paying attention. Their lives are busy, and they just don't care. But what they do know is that their gas prices have gone up a dollar a gallon over the last month. That's what they know. That's what they see. That's what they feel. So for the president, this was a chance to just hit the reset button. That was the only point. I like his line about sending them back to the Stone Ages, though. That was pretty good. And then Secretary of War Pete Hegseth just posted on X last night back to the Stone Ages. And I don't think that's going to upset anybody. I thought Trump's delivery was OK. That was one of the weaker points of the night. But I thought he doesn't want it to sound like a rally, and he's obviously got no audience around him when he's delivering a speech like that. And Trump as a performer likes having the audience. So he's never at his best when he's just in a room with a teleprompter and has to stay on script. That's not vintage Trump. But you've got to do it in scenarios like that. The guy can't be showing up with a MAGA hat and people hooting and hollering and the whole thing. You can't have that look in that moment. But it does give you a more somber Donald Trump than sometimes a guy who's not always firing on all cylinders because he's trying to subdue himself internally, John, is what he's doing. Yeah, without the audience, you get more of those verbal air quotes. It's like, because the leaders, they're all dead. Yes, words, you know, yes, the beginning and the end and they're dead. And you can tell he's he's really focused on staying on the script. There were segues last night that as I listened back to them after the speech in this morning, I was listening and I'm like, wait, I missed that line because he didn't pause at the end of the sentence and start the new thought. He was just kind of reading the words like I'm teaching little kids or at least my oldest, I'm teaching her to read right now. And you know, they're still trying to grasp the idea of, well, the periods here, so stop. I'm not saying that Trump's reading like a little kid. That's not my point. My point is, at times it was just reading the words. And I thought there were some excellent points that got lost in the conversation last night. And one of those was when he was talking about the idea of what Iran and their nuclear sites have gone through. And here's what the president of the United States had to say about that. So hard that it would take months to get near the nuclear dust. And we have it under intense satellite surveillance and control. If we see them make a move, even a move for it, we'll hit them with missiles very hard again. We have all the cards they have done. It's very important that we keep this conflict in perspective. By the way, can you hit somebody very softly with missiles? Is that a thing or can you only hit them very hard? I'm just curious. But that right there, I'm like, okay, I have to go back, catch that and be like, okay. I mean, if they even try to make a move towards some of the nuclear capabilities that we have gone after, they're done. It's over for them. Like Trump made it seem last night, like as much as we have bombed the, you know, what that of them, we still have actually made sure that they have some semblance of a country and they can operate if they get themselves to the negotiating table soon. And he also made it clear when you watch last night and you listen to last night's speech, he's not afraid to take things to the next level. And that's whether it's true or not. That's what you need to have the notion be if you are President Trump. And if you're really also speaking to the enemy here. And as much as this was not about those of us paying attention, this was also about sending a message and delivering this speech to the new regime in Iran, that this guy is not screwing around and that it can be worse if he wants to make it worse. But that's not the goal. Trust me, Trump would love to get a deal done today. He'd love to get a deal done today. Oil comes back down, you know, to 70 bucks a barrel. Stark market will go back up to 50,000 on the Dow. He would love that today. But he also knows you can't start this without finishing it because if you do that, you actually end up potentially with the situation becoming worse than it was before you started the operation. And that's the risk impart that, you know, he took and I have no issue with the risk that he took. But at the same time, what would bother me more at this point is if he walked away because he got skittish on the oil or the Dow Jones. I mean, the oil is obviously number one. More people are focused on their gas prices going up a dollar a gallon than they are the Dow hitting 47,500. Like that's all funny money. Even if you have a 401k, it's funny money. You're not sitting there like monitoring it every day. It doesn't impact your day to day life. It's just kind of there. But the gas prices are what people are feeling. He didn't get to the gas prices until like 12, 13 minutes into the speech. I thought that was a mistake. I think you come out out of the gates hot and you acknowledge the pain that people are feeling right away. And then you explain the why on the back end. But that's the only other thing I would have tweaked about the speech. It was something that probably could have been delivered one, two, three weeks ago. But using this moment one month in using the bully pulpit to reset why we're here, what happened even if you don't agree with the move. If you watch it last night, one thing you have to take away is, okay, this was not poorly thought out. There was a plan here. 9134087957. The one thing I think has caught him off guard and maybe caught the rest of the world off guard as well is the fact that Iran is tougher or just more suicidal, one or the other or both than maybe our leadership thought was going to be the case. That may be the only thing that has caught him a little bit off guard. 9134087957. I put this up on Facebook last night. What did you think of the speech? Jim Wright here thought it was great. An informative. Aaron says I thought it was better than most. Vivian writes, meh, thought there would be more to it. Nothing we haven't already heard. Darren says he loved it. Susan says pretty short. Damara says missed the speech. It was date night. Well, good for you. Good for you Damara. That's why you come here on KCMO and we'll catch you up all morning long. 9134087957. We'll get your reaction on the phones to what you heard from the President of the United States last night. Also what's the fallout been? An old foe is speaking out about the speech as well. We'll get to that next on 957 FM. Did you hear what the President said yesterday afternoon before the speech last night? I mean it was vintage hysterical Trump. Here's what he had to say. Tonight I'm making a little speech at 9 o'clock and basically I'm going to tell you everybody how great I am. What a great job I've done. What a phenomenal job. What a phenomenal job I've done. Get us Sean for Ash. Yes. Trump's becoming an impersonator of himself with lines like that. Oh my God. What a phenomenal job I've done. Oh man. Because even he knows, I think he does have the self-awareness to know how ridiculous he sounds sometimes and that's when he really leans into it like that. So he got up there and listen, I don't think that's what he did last night. I really don't. I think by Trump's standards, you watched last night, you listened last night and you had a guy who was sobering in the moment, understanding the importance of the moment and trying to explain why we're in the moment that we're in. 913-408-7957. What did you hear last night? Winnie and Lenexa, you're first up. Good morning. Good morning. I was rather disappointed last night. I think that the president is a great president but I think he missed the golden opportunity. I was hoping that he would be more compassionate as far as recognizing that gas prices are up but so is everything else, groceries and that he, I wish he would have said that he felt your pain. I was hoping that he would explain that the midterms are coming up. I could have waited there but I knew that if I waited that Iran was so close to getting this mom's perfected, it could have been too late. I was hoping that he would say that so that people understood more why did we go in so fast and why didn't we wait. So I mean I think that we heard a lot of what he said in the past as far as how great our military is. I'm fully approved of that but I thought he could have done a better job on relating to the people. I think that's a fair analysis, Winnie. Thanks for the call. I agree with you. Thank you. Listen here's the thing and I've said this since day one. The timing could not have been worse to do this because of the midterms coming up, right? No one in their right mind if you're the president of the United States would want to go to war against Iran knowing gas prices were going to spike the second that it happened and knowing that you are a few months away from your party trying to hold on for dear life to the house and the Senate. So for people that are like, ah, Trump's just doing what Israel tells them to do or he's just doing this to cause more chaos, how does that benefit him at all? Like just take a step back and acknowledge that and that's the point that Winnie was making and yes I agree one of my critiques off the top of the show was, hey, you know the gas price conversation only happened like 13 minutes into a 17 minute speech. You got to move that up. The speech started off talking about like, you know, the NASA launch yesterday. It's like just get to the point, okay? Nobody cares. Not that no one cares. It's cool we're going to space but like, okay, my gas prices are up a dollar to gallon. I'm great and cool with us going to space and being further away from the earth than any human beings ever been. That's great. You know, people are like, I just want to fill up and get to work for under 50 bucks. That's what I want. So getting to that right away I think is always important. It's something we talk about in radio. Get to your point. Be with the people and get to your point. And it took a little bit to Winnie's point to get there last night. Now where I will disagree with Winnie is on the point of, you know, applauding the military. She said that she appreciated that. The reason that you do that when you're the president is because no matter what, celebrating our military is still broadly speaking very popular on a bipartisan basis. Even if people don't like the war itself, they like our military by and large. So that's why any president in a speech like that always ties back to, you know, love the troops, many women of the military, rah, rah America. That's why they always do that because it's an easy win for them. And that's why the president did lean into that last night. 913-4087-957. Pete, I'm still confused. This on the text line. How does Iran have any impact on our cost of fuel? Because it's a global market. That's why. I mean, there's nothing more to it than that. It's a global market. So even though we're in a better spot than we've been in a long time with our oil, you know, the rest of the world needs it too. So that's why. I mean, we're not operating here on just the United States and our oil, and that doesn't impact anybody else. It's a global market. So that's what ends up happening. And that's why you've seen that uptick in oil prices over the last month or so. Now Kamala Harris was preparing last night for Trump's speech, but she wanted to also let everybody know that she wasn't going to be watching it last night because it was still happy hour on the West Coast. Hey, everyone. So I'm not going to be able to watch the president's address tonight, but here's the thing. He brought America into a war that people do not want. He has put American troops in harm's way. Costs are rising by the day. And meanwhile, he has done nothing to address the needs of the people of America. And I bet you he's going to try and claim victory tonight. But the reality is we're watching what he does instead of listening to what he says. Okay. There was Kamala Harris on a way to happy hour telling us why she can't watch the speech. Thank you very much for that. To have the vice presidents, the former vice presidents who oversaw the worst inflation in 40 years have major concerns over costs going up. That is just awfully rich, isn't it? I mean, I just that to me right there. I was like, you got to be kidding me. We all may have been born at night. Maybe you were. I don't even know if I was, but it wasn't last night. My memory goes back more than 18 months. Okay. So I that I just, I did not want to hear that. And she got roasted for that video as she should. Well, I don't know if she's noticed. She buys her wine wholesale by the box. You know, cardboard. Oh, that's exactly right. That is exactly right. She hasn't quite felt it yet. Yeah. No, you're right. That's true. Unbelievable. So yeah, she was not watching. So maybe Kamala's tuned in this morning on the KCMO talk radio app on the stream and she's getting her information from us this morning since she couldn't watch it last night. Coming up. Let's have the debate. We'll get you started with the talk. And it ties into alcohol sales in Kansas City. The mayor will be on the show next hour. We'll get your input on this coming up next on KCMO. All right. Today is the big day in Kansas City where the city council is going to vote on the mini liquor bottle ban. And this one has been controversial on both sides of the aisle. The committee had a standing room only meeting the other day while council members made comments on both sides of the issue. Yet people arguing in the hallway. So if you were not following, here's what is being considered in Kansas City. They're going to take potential pockets of Kansas City in the urban core and basically ban small bottles of alcohol to be sold in these different parts of Kansas City. Shooters whatever you want to call them are going to be banned from being sold in certain pockets of Kansas City. Oftentimes in parts of the urban core where you have people hanging around and loitering around these places late at night, early in the morning, and then a confrontation happens and someone tragically ends up getting shot or something like that. That's why there are members of the city council who want to move ahead with this. They think that by banning these shooter sales at some of these convenience stores that it will help alleviate some of the violence that happens at these places at all hours of the night. I'm not convinced it's going to work. I actually, I don't, this is not one of those ordinances that I just absolutely hate, but at the same time, if I own one of these convenience stores and I'm doing everything the right way and I got a business that is operating by the law. Why should I be hurt by this? Why should I be hurt by the fact that, you know, we're short staffed by hundreds of police officers because of a defund the police movement that dates back half a decade? Because we can't recruit cops to patrol the streets because we don't have a jail in Kansas City to put people in for a holding period of time. Because we've been soft on crime with a terrible prosecutor for far too long. Now we have, I think, a much better one in Melissa Johnson, but it takes time to clean that up. Why should my business, my convenience store, my livelihood be hampered by this? That's the understandable question that many convenience store owners are asking in Kansas City and they have a right to ask it and I agree with them. So I've come around on this because at first I was kind of like, okay, I mean, you know, I get this, I understand this. But then as I heard these folks make their arguments at City Hall over the last few days and weeks, I'm like, no. So the city doesn't do its job. So now you can sell a little bottle of vodka out of your convenience store? Now what does it say about us societally that these convenience stores are so reliant on these little shooter bottles of alcohol? Like, yeah, that's a good point. I get that. But that's not the fault of the convenience store owner. There's nothing to do with them. That is the fault of society. And as long as they're not doing anything illegally, I'm not going to sit here and tell them to do something that they should not otherwise have to do. 913-408-7957. Mayor Lucas will be here coming up in one hour. I'll ask him about this because this is something that is going to continue to get a lot of attention at City Hall. Libby's in Waldo. Hey Libby, good morning. Good morning, Pete. I wish I had called earlier about the President's speech last night, but I have a question about this council decision today. And you might ask the mayor. I don't know. Are we going to be or is the council going to be dealing with accusations of discrimination? Yeah, probably. I think that's going to happen because here are the five designated areas. Prospect Avenue, Southeast Corridor, Central Business District, Midtown Corridor, Independence Avenue Corridor, Blue Ridge Corridor. There you go. And those are the high risk areas for sure. Yep. And they're overwhelmingly minority areas too. That's right. So I think they're going to have, I agree, they're going to have lawsuits on their hands after all this. And who's going to foot those bills? You are Libby, right in Waldo. Your taxes will foot those bills, those big legal bills. Yeah, who is going to file lawsuits? I mean, the people that are hanging out on the corners, you know, just loitering, like you say, or just hanging out and getting a note caused in trouble. They certainly don't have the money to file a lawsuit unless they go to the legal aid council. Well, well, well, the business owners of the convenience stores, they'll file the lawsuits, you know. That's right. Yeah. But by the way, well, no, on behalf of their bottom line, on behalf of themselves. And by the way, where's the ACLU when you need it? Yeah. Let's see, we need to come up with a new term. ACLU, what could those letters also mean, you know? Yeah. Well, I'd have to, I can't think that quickly off the top of my head, but you know, I could come up with something that's pretty nasty because that's what they deserve. They're too busy helping out illegal immigrants instead of helping out, you know, people in Kansas City who are business owners who are potentially getting screwed because they operate a convenience store in a majority minority neighborhood in Kansas City. That's right. Thank you. You got to eat. I appreciate it, Liz Libby. Thanks so much. Yeah. I mean, that's, that's, it's such a joke. So those are the designated areas that are being considered here under this ordinance. Retail alcohol impact areas would prohibit these areas of Kansas City from selling individual containers of distilled spirits of 200 milliliters or less with alcohol content of 35% or more. Half pints, nips, minis, airplane bottles, all those little things. And also single serve malt beverages and beer sold in containers of 40 ounces or less. So, you know, Mad Dog 2020 and all those different things, right? All your 40s done. Restrictions would not apply citywide and would not affect bars and restaurants. The ordinance also exempt stores that qualify as grocery stores to find as retail businesses of at least 15,000 square feet that derive 70% or more of their sales from non alcohol products. If passed by the city council, the ordinance would take effect 60 days after approval. I sense a shift in traffic patterns. Yeah. I do too. Right. Yeah. Just hop on a different bus line. That's all it's gonna take. I'll just go down to grocery store. Yeah. Or that. You're right. Absolutely. Of course, we have a food desert midtown, so that may be another lawsuit coming. Yeah. That's a great point there, John. You're right about that. So I don't know how legal this is. That's being debated by the attorneys right now. But you know, it's one of those things I'm looking at and I'm saying to myself, I don't, I don't know how it's gonna work. I don't know how you're gonna implement this for just certain pockets of Kansas City. If you're on one side of a certain street, you'll be okay. If you're on the other side, you're screwed. How is that fair? So we'll see how it plays out. Now, speaking of booze, Kansas is considering following Kansas City with this rule that would allow bars to be opened 23 hours a day during the World Cup. Kansas legislators passed this bill. They can't get property tax reform, but don't worry. You want to sit in a bar till five in the morning during the World Cup? They got you covered. This is now going to Laura Kelly's desk. The goal is to capitalize on anticipated World Cup fever spread to the sunflower state. The bill would allow the sale of alcohol beverages 23 hours a day, seven days a week for the duration of the FIFA 2026 World Cup. Wow. Meanwhile, if the subway in Goodland, was this affecting the whole state? Yes. We initially heard the proposal it was. Yes. So clear out in Western Kansas here for a few weeks. And we were like, whoo-hoo. Yeah. I'm like, it seems unique. Yeah. The old boys coming out the feed lots are going to be real happy. You know, they can go get their beer at three in the morning now. Until you listen. Yes. Oh man. You ever been to liberal Kansas? You need some booze out there with the smell. I'll tell you what, it's unbelievable. But that being the case, you know, this is, this is just offensive policy. It's really what it is. I mean, they're trying to just get sales tax revenues off of all the booze hounds from overseas. Like that's it. It's all it's about. I think it's disappointing because, you know, say, uh, Sunday morning, chiefs have one of those rare noon games. You wrap up church and you're like, Hey, let me go grab a six pack for the game. Oh, can't do it. Can't go get that six pack until noon on Sunday in Kansas. But now we get these hooligans from overseas coming on over and come on whenever you want, baby. Let's go. Let's have a good time. 913-408-7957. And of all the priorities in the legislature in Kansas, I know this one's easy, but man, you guys, you got to be kidding me. The stuff that matters to your own residents, you can't get done. But let's try to goose the sales tax revenues as much as we can for the drunks from the UK. Great. Awesome. That's a fantastic. Bert's first up. What's up, Bert? Hey, how are you? I'm well, buddy. What's going on? Hey, I just want to come in on the doing the thing on the alcohol. I mean, they're just trying to get them a drink of moderation. That's all. They just want them to slow their roll, right? Only one drink an hour. They won't rush themselves that the bars are open 23 hours a day. That's a great point. Yeah. Just because I got many muffins don't mean you go eat a hundred and fifty of them. You know, yeah. Yep. You're gosh, you're on it there, Bert. Thank you, buddy. That's spot on. That's great. Let's go to Linda. You're on KCMO. Hi, Linda. Hello. I wanted to ask what does it take to qualify as a grocery store because grocery stores can still sell the small bottles. So if a liquor store could set up a shelf with bread and twinkies, whatever, and have a part of their refrigerated section, sell milk. Yeah. OK, so here's your answer. This is for Kansas City. They would define a grocery store that could keep selling these little nips 15,000 square feet. So you got to be big. And you have to have 70 percent of your sales come from non-alcohol products. So that's why the convenience store could not pull it off. Oh, dang. Sorry. You sorry. Sorry. You own a convenience store, Linda? No, do not want to own one. I was going to say bad time to get into the business in Kansas City. Yeah. Thank you so much. Have a good day. You too. Thank you, Linda. Appreciate you listening. Larry's in Topeka. What's up, Larry? The thing about the 23 hour liquor sales, what is going to end up happening is they're going to change it to 24 and make it permanent. No, they're not. They're not that they're not. Listen, they're not bright in Topeka. They're not. They're not that dumb. They won't do that. That's my point. They're not bright in Topeka. So they're going to do the most stupid thing that could possibly do. You know, like anytime something gets passed, that gets pushed through, that becomes a law or whatever, ends up being permanent, like income tax or, you know, the turnpike. Yeah. I understand your concern there, Larry. It's a good call. I listen, if you're right, Larry, you call back and you say Pete at 645 on April 2nd, 2026, I told you this was going to happen. I don't think that they're going to do that. I don't think that conservatives in the legislature could justify bars being open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I just, I don't, I don't. I told you on the first day of your ninth year, Pete. Yeah. That's right. That's right. It is day one of year nine of the show. So I can't believe it's been nine years. It's unbelievable. But here we are with now the longest running show on KCMO going back to the Mike Murphy days. How about that? Can't believe it. Wow. I'm sure for most of it. Yeah. Exactly right, John. So the president of the United States did something very interesting towards the end of his speech last night. He gave a little context to the length of this war. Now we're sitting here on day 33 of the Operation Epic Fury against Iran. The president delivered his first speech to the nation last night. And overall, I give it a six out of 10. But it wasn't geared towards those of us who actually pay attention. That really wasn't the point of the speech. Trump used the bully pulpit, took over network news to speak to the masses. He used it to speak to people who are watching Survivor and season 58 of The Voice, who just don't know what's going on. That's who he was speaking to last night. And at the end of the speech, he made a very important point to talk about the length of this war and put it in a context. When you look at the last 100 years in this country and the wars and the conflicts that we've been a part of. Here's what he said. It's important that we keep this conflict in perspective. American involvement in World War One lasted one year, seven months and five days. World War Two lasted for three years, eight months and 25 days. The Korean War lasted for three years, one month and two days. The Vietnam War lasted for 19 years, five months and 29 days. Iraq went on for eight years, eight months and 28 days. We are in this military operation so powerful, so brilliant against one of the most powerful countries for 32 days. And the country has been eviscerated and essentially is really no longer a threat. They were the bully of the Middle East, but they're the bully no longer. This is a true investment in your children and your grandchildren's future. The whole world is watching and they can't leave the power, strength and brilliance. They just can't believe what they're seeing. They leave it to your imagination, but they can't believe what they're seeing, the brilliance of the United States military. Tonight every American can look forward to a day when we are finally free from the wickedness of So two things there that stood out to me. The president put the timeline in the context. It's been 32 days and you compare it to World War One, World War Two, Korea, certainly Vietnam, Iraq, it's obviously nothing. But in 2026 with social media, with a 24 seven news cycle, every day can feel like a week, every week can feel like a month, and a month can feel like a year. Because if we allow it to, the news cycle never ends. It just goes on and on and on. And our attention spans are garbage, our patience is non-existent. And you know, it's not a good thing. It's just where the world is right now. So that's why frankly, it's one of the reasons that politics is so messed up. Because nobody wants to sacrifice anything. Everybody wants what they want and they want it now. And if they don't get it now, they're going to go to somebody else. Because when you can go on your phone and in a couple of clicks get a package delivered to your front door in a few hours, yeah, that patience is going to run thin real fast. And that's why the president, I think wisely, was putting some of this in the context, which is to say, listen, I was the guy who campaigned on ending and not getting into forever wars and nation building jobs that we can't complete. But that's not what this is. This is 32 days. And yes, there's been pain and, you know, gas prices oil futures this morning up to 110 bucks a barrel. They were at 97 before he started that speech last night. So obviously, you know, Dow Jones, I'm looking at the futures are off 600 points this morning as the markets get set to open up in about an hour and 22 minutes. So yeah, all that stuff is not good for today. But then the president made a really good point. He said, this is about, you know, the freedom and safety and security of your kids and your grandkids. And that's something that I thought got lost in the speech last night. What if he moved that up to the front of the speech? And he said, listen, both sides of the aisle have known for years that Iran has been a problem and not just a problem for the Middle East, but a problem for America going on. And that's not going back half a century. Whether it's funding September 11th, let's not forget, whether it's funding Hamas and what happened in Israel on October 7th. They have been in many ways the global leader of terrorism for far too long. We've allowed it for far too long. And now someone had to do something about it. It was not advantageous to this president in a midterm year when his party was already in a very difficult spot to go out there and do this. But if they felt like Iran was on the verge of nuclear capabilities that not just could reach our allies, but potentially come close to reaching the United States, what are you going to do in that moment? You going to wait and play the political game? We've done that for too long. Both parties have been playing the political game for too long. Now you've got a guy that says, yeah, it may not be politically the best thing for me, but if I have to do it for the safety of the country, the safety of future generations, my kids, my grandkids, that's a good selling point. And I thought it kind of got buried in the speech last night. 913-408-7957, but it's an important point to make. You know, I mean, not that anybody wants gas prices to be up a dollar a gallon the last month, which is what's going on, which is going to drive up food prices and will, you know, respite inflation to some degree. It's not what anybody wants. It's not like, you know, anyone should be happy about this. But if put in context, you know what? Being able to have a country that can try to get gas prices back down is a heck of a lot better than having the worst actors on the planet with nuclear capabilities. And and that was, I thought, the point of last night. It wasn't the best delivered speech. It was a little longer than it needed to be. It probably could have been eight to 10 minutes. Um, some of the most important points I thought got buried in the speech, got put in the back half of the speech, should have been right in the first couple of minutes. But overall, it was it was fine. I don't think it really moves the needle a lot either way. It doesn't change anything. It was more for people who haven't been paying attention, but it was fine. 913-408-7957, Paul's in Kansas City. Hey, Paul, good morning. Hey, Pete, I agree with you. The speech was okay, but on the heels of the Rubio speech, it kind of bolstered a little bit. But the thing that stood out to me is, uh, one, we can't have an American city turn into a radioactive dust bowl, but the when he said 35,000 protesters were murdered by the government and then the government, when they shot them, they had said ambulances like we would do here in America, they left them on the street for the families to come get them. And I was like, whoa, whoa, you cannot allow these people. We had this is the righteous war. We got to finish. And these these zealots could never have a nuclear bomb that can come to Kansas City and turn us into a wasteland. 35,000. Can you imagine the no-kings protest beat? That 35,000 people just laid on the street for the families to come get. It's horrific. And I mean that point there, it just jumped out at me. That is, uh, you're right, Paul. And that's, I mean, that's like two T-mobile centers packed to the gills. Unbelievable. That's what that is. And 2046. Yeah, you're right. That's a great point there, Paul. Thanks for making it. Thanks, brother. Yeah, have a great day. No, you're spot on there, man. Spot on. And it does put in the context the kind of evil that America was dealing with on the other side of the world and is still dealing with on the other side of the world. Now, I will say, I think that the Iranians have have been tougher and more insane than maybe we anticipated, or at least some of our leadership anticipated, but these guys, you know, they're nuts. They're radicals. They will stop at nothing because they believe their mission is to die for the cause, which is to destroy the west. So that's, that's what they've been doing for far too long. And that's why they don't care. And when you're dealing with a government and you're dealing with leadership that is out there and is willing to basically die for the cause, it's hard to negotiate. Like it's not easy to negotiate with individuals like that. 9134087957, that is the text line on KCMO talk radio also on the studio line. Let's go to Oak Grove. Derek is there. What's up, Derek? Hey, how's it going? So the point of a country getting nuclear weapons is the mutually assured destruction. Okay, they want to keep other countries from invading them. Why would a country as sophisticated as Iran get a nuclear weapon just so they can fire it at us? And then we will attack them back with way more. You're basically saying they want to get a nuclear weapon so that they can commit suicide. That's what you're saying right now. That is correct. That's what you believe, honestly. Absolutely. Do you think that Iran gives free healthcare and free college to their citizens? So that they can eventually build a nuclear bomb and they commit suicide. That's what you believe. Yes. I mean, do you realize it sounds like a thing? Sound like a what? A fool. I don't know why would they do that. Why would you possibly believe that about anybody? Why would anybody do that? Okay, well as as we just talked about they have killed 36,000 of their own people. So talking about them like hey, we're just out here giving away free healthcare and we're just taking care of our people. Is that concerned? Where are you getting those numbers from? I mean anywhere. BBC Time Magazine. I mean you can go up and down the list. Not my media outlets. Probably more of yours. But are you suggesting that Iran does not kill its own people and does not kill its own protesters? Well, as you know, the outlets are also reporting that the Mossad was on the ground in Iran trying to throw him at you. So as an example an Iranian rep would actually hang on and what people leave out is that he actually killed two police officers. So I'm trying to figure out like are you in support of riots that kill police officers? Like what are you saying? Well, hold I'm asking you. I asked you a very simple question. Do you think that Iran kills its own protesters? I just told you that I think they do kill some and I gave you an example of when it happens. Okay. Well, here's what I would say to answer your question. Yes. I mean we clearly know that the Iranian leadership is so driven and so motivated by their extremism religiously. They will die for their cause. We've seen examples of that over 50 years. So I don't know how you can say that's a crazy take. Okay. Let me, can I push back on that please? Sure. Go ahead. We we just had the 12 day war and Israel was attacking Iran and Iran was showing restraint was specifically telling us where they would attack because they wanted to be escort. So they've shown a tremendous amount of restraint up to this point and when you say they fund terrorism you're talking about what like Hezbollah, the Houthis, I mean those are people where Saudi Arabia is trying to bomb So the Houthis have to fight back against that. Hezbollah fights back against Israel stealing land. Iran has funded Hamas for decades. Okay. And Hamas is like way to fight back against Israel. You get to that economy here, right? Like you're saying there's terrorists. Do you think that the United States does terrorism whenever they inflict economic damage on a place like Cuba? Oh, good gosh. Good gosh. They're only trying to hurt the people there. Derek. Derek. Derek. Derek. Derek. I've given you plenty of time. It's been a nice conversation, but we're not going to agree here, man. We're just not. We're not. Okay. I mean comparing us and our relationship with Cuba or something to Hamas being funded by Iran and then Hamas committing the worst genocide against the Jews since the Holocaust and somehow saying these are one and the same and Iran is just a bunch of reasonable people who are really trying to be good actors on the world stage. I come on, man. Come on. Just stop. Just give it up. All right. I mean seriously Yes, we know for 50 years that Iranian leadership and by the way the terrorist organizations that they fund are willing to die for their cause to try to take out the west. There are dozens of examples of that 913-408-7957 mayor Lucas coming up bottom of the hour and more with you on kcm 913-408-7957 president of the united states giving a speech last night we're getting your reaction and We have mayor Lucas in 10 minutes Scott and Lee Summit. Go ahead Scott Hey, I just wanted to tell you, you know, I was so upset with your caller. I'm a first-time caller and I really don't speak out but Your last caller he scares me Because he's actually believing what he's saying Iran wants to have a nuclear weapon so they can threaten them blackmail the rest of the world They want us to send pallets of cash like we've done in the past over to fund their economy And that's point blank and trump is exactly right Get rid of the nuclear threat and make the world safer Yep, I mean that's uh, that's the goal here and listen. There's no doubt. There's some short-term pain around this Scott no one's happy about that gas prices are up But they've got to continue to hammer the bigger picture here and the why And explain it's temporary. It's about the safety and security of this country kids grandkids. That's that's what this is about um, and you know what you're dealing with the regime that is tyrannical that is I'm willing to die for its cause and that's a hard group to be negotiating with. Uh, let's go to carl independence. Got a minute carl What's up, buddy? Hi, p Do you remember the first day the first strike we hit? Hilled off the uh, the mullets a whole bunch of them high command This is speculation. I have no evidence for it But I have the firm belief that the purpose of that meeting with all that uh leadership Was decide on their had Their nuclear program. They were going to rush to a bomb now We have learned that they've had rockets That can hit europe That wasn't public knowledge, but I would tell us the doughnuts that the cia knew that so trump was put in the position of a radical uh, government With rockets that can hit europe with 100 pounds of radioactive fissionable material And all the leadership had won place and I think he struck Oh, the reason we couldn't tell congress was we we've war game this and if we've uh given Iranians 24 hours notice They they beat us. We had to hit and hit hard There's another aspect of this people haven't haven't looked at well, you're gonna have to save that one carl You're gonna have to you're gonna have to see the dirty bomb. Yeah, you're gonna have to save save the Expansion of your second port because I'm up against it carl the mayor of kandah city is going to be very very very Thank you. There you go party on carl Hang on there, buddy The president had a very clear message last night. They're all dead. That's right. Good morning 804 It's great to be here on kcm otak radio 95 7 fm We do have that flood watch in place until 1 o'clock this afternoon The president delivering about a 15 minute speech last night that you heard right here on kcm otak radio And it was solid. It was fine. I would give it about a six out of ten It was not something that was intended for those of you who have been following the war It was intended for people who are not paying attention. That was the point not to knock them But you got to reach them too You got to reach them, but the reason I don't give it a great Score is because the way you get to those people right out of the gates is by Acknowledging what they are seeing every day And what people who aren't paying attention but are seeing every day is their gas prices going up $1 a gallon over the last month That's what they see And that came like 13 minutes into a 15 minute speech Nobody has attention spans. Nobody has patience the people who needed to see it needed to hear that in the first two minutes And needed to hear why this was happening and what was being done about it and how eventually this will come back down But here's why we had to do this Because the people that got to hear that the most were probably the same people that tuned out and you know went on their instagram or their tiktok while survivor was being interrupted or You know American Idol was being interrupted. What are they on like season 92 of america? Is that even on? I don't know. I know the voice is on Oh, yeah, american Idol still on still on man Are they still pumping out stars like kelly clarkson or no? Occasionally once in a while. Yeah, it does seem strange to me that Sometimes people that finish in like fifth place end up actually going somewhere and the winners you never hear from again That's right. I think morgan wallin was on one of those shows go figure loren dago was christian artist. Yeah, how about that? very nice But that's who it was intended for last night Now something else that came out last night Is you had uh camilla harris, of course president trump's former foe in the 2024 election She came out and she wanted to make sure that you knew that she wasn't going to watch the speech Okay It was happy hour in southern california still so she was not going to go out there and she was not going to watch the president of the united states Speak last night, but she knew darn well. What was going to happen? Hey everyone So i'm not going to be able to watch the president's address tonight, but here's the thing He brought america into a war that people do not want. He has put american troops in harm's way Costs are rising by the day And meanwhile he has done nothing to address the needs of the people of america And i bet you he's gonna try and claim victory tonight But the reality is we're watching what he does Instead of listening to what he says You mean kind of like your four years where inflation ran 40 year highs and now you're worried about costs going up When you had no answer to why costs went up dramatically highest rates in four decades During those four years I mean i'm not saying inflation's been perfect. It's still been a little sticky. That's a fact But you got to be kidding me of all people to start talking about well your costs are going up you know You want to criticize the war that's fine I might not use the costs potentially going up when you've got that track record Well, you know, I might be having a little bit of self-awareness on that one But that might be too much to ask, you know, I said i've been paid attention when she said Hello, here's the deal He knew it was going south right there. I told you man happy era was in full swing. Okay. I mean, you know There's still an hour left. It was only six o'clock on the west coast when that thing started last night Happy era is running till seven two for one deals on the cabernet I took my cork. I want the cork But here's what's fascinating too You know, you want to talk about things that Kamala Harris said when she was running for office Just take a listen. I mean, this is something that both political parties actually agree with but because our political establishment is so stupid We just can't admit that there's a lot of good that's coming out of this despite the short-term pain Here's a montage of Kamala Harris talking while she was a candidate for the presidency Which foreign country do you consider to be our greatest anniversary? I think there's an obvious One in mind, which is Iran. Iran has american blood on their hands. Okay. This attack on israel 200 ballistic missiles um What we need to do to ensure that Iran never achieves the ability to be a nuclear power That is one of my highest priorities. So if you have proof that Iran is building a nuclear power company, would you take military action? I'm not going to talk about that for so long And what's the message to Iran? Don't As president biden said just don't exactly one word pretty straightforward I try that with my kids once in a while Don't don't it's sometimes it works better with the dog than it does the kid. Don't you have don't yeah You can mock those comments all you want. I don't need to do that right now because the point is Like it was only a few months ago. We all agreed that Iran had american blood on its hands And they could not ever become a nuclear power But now because our political climate is so dumb and so hyperpartisan If Trump does it it must be bad This can't be a good thing Like square all those comments from kamala harris from less than two years ago, which you know, listen, they're not her worst comments She actually made some sense there. She actually was Coherent I know it's shocking talk about a bombshell But her point was Iran is one of the great threats in the country and they can or in the world And they can never become a nuclear power, but now It's like well trumps war costs up You know, he doesn't know what he's doing. It's like well, we were all in agreement on this now Explain why you disagree with maybe how the last 32 days have unfolded No one's happy about you think trumps happy about the cost of oil going up as he faces a mid-term year where His party probably is in for a world of hurt like you think that the timing for him was ideal. Of course, it's not ideal for him But if the intelligence was correct and if he's going to trust his people Then you know what you can't just worry about the politics of the moment And you have to do what's in the country and the world's best interests Sort of reminds me of january 6th and that we in the media will bury an important point What proof did we have that there was an imminent threat? Oh, they walked into the meeting and said hey, you know, we could whip up about six nuclear warheads right now If we wanted to they thought they were flexing. Yes. Yes. Would that was it right there? That was a part of your right about that. Nobody reports that we forget like january 6th trump called. Hey, you need the national guard Yeah, we're good. We're good. Nancy's got it. Don't worry about it, man. It's all good. No, that's that's absolutely right absolutely right And you know when I hear these clips from kamala harris, I'm like, okay So even hillary clinton over the last few weeks has given some praise to the president of the united states But you know, she's long gone. She's out of the picture at this point kamala harris still has aspirations Of maybe becoming president one day. So everything this guy does has to be the worst thing that could happen in the country Which actually is the opposite of what kamala harris should be doing She's already Going to be a frontrunner just because she already was a candidate going into 2028 If she actually showed herself to be a little more reasonable and moderate. I think it would actually help her cause for 2028 But they they just They don't think like that because they're so stuck in their little bubbles that anything he does has got to be the worst thing I'm not saying she's got to praise the speech. I mean don't don't get me wrong here They're never going to praise anything he does But let's just say hey You know what tough spot iran not having nuclear capabilities is a good thing for the united states and its allies But now we've got to focus on getting these costs down And if you want to knock them for dragging it on too long find something But don't act like you weren't the same person 18 months ago saying iran is a major threat to the world And something's got to be done about it if they're on the verge of nuclear weapons You know it's not news. Kamlo is not going to be paying attention She just said it right Yes, that's right. That's finally she's honest. Yeah, she's a real beauty.
