-♪ The New York Times theme music plays -♪ Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, very kind. Welcome on and all in here, out there, all around the world to the late show. I'm your host, Stephen Colbert. Folks! -♪ Cheers and applause It, it, of course, tonight is April 15th. Happy tax day to all who celebrate. -♪ Laughter It's actually a very important day for Trump's big, beautiful bill the past last year, because even though in the bill they decimated Medicaid and slash government programs left and right, they kept saying it's all gonna be worth it on April 15th of this year when people saw their giant tax refunds. Well, we finally know how much the average American is gonna get. It's $748, which I gotta say, it's pretty good. Unfortunately, thanks to Trump's war with Iran, this year, gasoline is expected to cost the average household $740,000. Let's see, hold on, let's see, $740,000. I gotta say, what's that? $748,000? $748,000? What's that? I thought that is... So good to see you. I'm gonna come back. -♪ Cheers and applause -♪ Whoo! -♪ Whoo! -♪ Oh! -♪ Oh! That's eight bucks. That's eight bucks. So congratulations, everybody. Eight bucks doesn't sound like much, but may I remind you, that'll get you eight Lotto tickets, which also happens to be Trump's health care plan. Now, this would also be a really great time for Americans to get a big check back because Trump's war has driven consumer sentiment to its lowest level in 70 years since 1956, when everyone was wearing those buttons that said, I sprained my knee doing the twist, and now I know like I... I'm... Just not... I'm just... Obviously, I'm just... I'm just joshing. It turns out 1956 is as far back as the numbers go, meaning consumer confidence as at the lowest level ever recorded. Now, that may sound bad, but that's only because it's never been worse. Ooh, there's, uh... There's more tough news to chew on. Beef is getting harder for Americans to afford, which explains Pizza Hut's new leftover Easter candy lover's pizza. No one out peeps the Hut. All right, prices... Prices are rising just as summer barbecues is in this heating up, to which your vegan cousin said, Well, well, well. I guess these tofu ribs don't look so bad after all. What's that? They still look bad and also weird because they are shape-like ribs, even though they're made out of coagulated soy. Oh. Fine. Be that way. Nut-based cheese to anyone? Cashew cheddar. It doesn't melt. Beef isn't the only American tradition affected by inflation these days because it was just announced that 7-Eleven will close 645 U.S. stores this year. 7-Eleven. Never forget. All right. Ooh. Ooh. Ooh. Yeah. Ooh. The company explained that personal consumption had softened particularly among low-income households as inflation continued to weigh on spending. Yes, that's how bad things are in America. Folks can't afford to eat at 7-Eleven. What's next? Are Americans forced to limit themselves to a sensible gulp? Damn it. This is America. I do not believe I should have to drink from any cup I couldn't possibly also drown in. I shouldn't eat a snorkel. Just for safety reasons. Also season one. Also season one, Joe. As I said, this inflation is being caused by the war, but it's really not that bad. According to Trump's director of the National Economic Council and Jolly Skin Tag, Kevin Hassett. Hassett went on the CNBC. CNBC yesterday to explain what might bring prices down. Imagine if oil prices start going back down because the situation resolves itself somehow, then you could be looking at an inflation close to zero. Yes. Yes, the situation might resolve itself somehow. Until then, all America has to do is use their imagination. Imagine. No, imagine. My friends, imagine a car made of licorice somehow. And it somehow runs on dreams and somehow your best friend is a musical dog and Kevin Hassett isn't an idiot. Somehow. Imagine. Hassett. Hassett is not the only one having trouble putting a positive spin on America's energy future under Trump. Here's his energy secretary, Chris Wright. Just because it looks like we're going the wrong direction does not mean that's the direction we're going. There you go. Yes, well said. Well said. And is this true? I'm told we actually have video of where America's headed. This is not the direction I'm going! It's not actually headed that way, though. It's not... It's not just the war and the economy. Trump is still in holy hot water with his supporters. After he's gone, he's gone. He's gone. He's gone. He's gone. There's a new effort. There's a new effort. There's a new effort. There's a new effort. There's a new effort. There's a new effort. By the way, that robe there, it's open in the back, okay? This guy right here, this guy behind me. This guy is getting an eye full of my loaves and fishes, if you know what I mean. The problem with lying into conservative Christian maga about this photo is that they know what American Jesus looks like. And it's this. They're not buying his bull. According to one GOP fundraiser, Trump got significant pushback from evangelicals and Catholics both sides of the Christian aisle. And he cannot lose the Christian aisle. That's the part of the grocery store where they sell Maga's most popular cereal, Christ Krispies, Snap, Crackle, and Pope. One reporter. Nice. One reporter reached out to some Trump voters in Florida to get their reaction. Personally, it's disgusting. I talked with my wife about it earlier. I mean, Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior, and that right there is, I mean, that's, I don't really have words for that. That's disgusting. As a Christian, how do you feel when you see this image? Offended. Yeah, I'm ashamed. I'm ashamed that he would actually do that. A man I voted for and trust. Clearly, Trump is in danger of losing his key demo, Goateed Meat Daddies, willing, willing to talk to strangers at a gas station. And they're not alone. No, they're not alone. According to one conservative radio host, a lot of the base is becoming exasperated enough to start looking beyond Trump. Wait, wait. What? What? I don't even understand that. Did he say, did he say a day beyond Trump? I can see it. Oh, everything's so fresh and beautiful. I can breathe again. There, beyond Trump, a new day dawns, and look, here comes the sun. I'm JD Fance. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. No. No. No. No. So today, to win back the Christian voters he offended by depicting himself as AI Jesus, Trump put up a new post depicting himself canoodling with AI Jesus. Wait, what's, wait, hold on. What's going on there? Hold on. Zoom out. There. They're Swayze-ing. No, no, no, no, no, no. Beautiful, really. Think about it. It's beautiful. Of course, when... It's a holy ghost. That's holy ghost is what that is. Of course, when the president is facing a scandal like this AI Jesus thing as vice president, it's JD Vance's job to get out there to receive a swift kick in the nuts. Yesterday at a Turning Point USA conference down in Georgia, Vance had some sharp words for Pope Leo over the pope's criticism of Trump's Iran war. In the same way that it's important for the vice president of the United States to be careful when I talk about matters of public policy, I think it's very, very important for the pope to be careful when he talks about matters of theology. Wow. Hey, hey, hey, JD, I know you're a Catholic, but you joined in 2019, okay? I've been genuflected since the mid-1960s, and let me tell you, brother... Okay? I think... I think you're out of... I think you're out... No, I got something to say. I think you're out over your Catholic skis here, okay? I think it's time for you to sit down, then stand back up, then kneel, then stand back up, then kneel, then stand again, then shake hands with people around you, then kneel a little more, then go take communion, and then go back to your pew for some more kneeling, because you're not sneaking out of here after communion, because you know who left the last upper early? Judas. You got a great show for you tonight. Coming up, Anne Hathaway. Welcome back, everybody, ladies and gentlemen. My first guest tonight is an Academy and Emmy Award-winning actress you know from the Princess Diaries, the Devil Wears Prada, and Les Miserables. She now stars in the new film Mother Mary. Please welcome back to the late show Anne Hathaway. Hey. Hi. I'm going to remember that for a long time. Isn't that lovely? Best of my best-in-best-damn audience. So nice to see you again. It's so great to see you. It's an exciting time to be Anne Hathaway. A lot of people are saying that this is your year. Okay, here's Anne Hathaway. I'm going to be the first guest to be here. I'm going to be the first guest to be here. I'm going to be the first guest to be here. I'm going to be the first guest to be here. A lot of people are saying that this is your year. Okay, here is entertainment tonight, 2026, officially, the year of Anne Hathaway. Oh, my God! Anne Hathaway's biggest year ever begins this week. You've got five movies coming out. How's it feel to be Anne Hathaway right now? I'm sitting across from Steve and Cole Bear, so it feels pretty great to be Anne Hathaway right now. Look at the company I'm keeping! It's really, it's really exciting. I love the movies, And I love going to the movies and so I love being able to turn to people and say I made things I'm really proud of and I think it's worth your time and for you to buy a ticket and that just feels amazing. And 5 is a lot in a single year 5. Yeah, I want to get to mother. Oh, please, I was going to say it was like a little over 3, 3 and a half years of work. And it's all coming out in the 6th month corridor and so and the thing that's fun about it happening now is I'm 43 and when I was 23 would have been like oh God the anxiety and the stress and all of this and now I'm like oh my God. This is life. Let's do this. So I'm just here to have fun. I'm loving the music and love in the 5. I want to get to mother Mary but first I got to talk to you about the devil wears product to us. Okay. We had your power Merrill Streep on here recently. I swear, yeah, she stole your sweater where it went. You guys are back in the day that's 20 years ago for the first devil wears Prada and here you are again right now. Time has been very good to both of you what's it like to be back with the whole gang. I should so much fun. Yeah, it's so great Emily Blunt also and Stanley to see yeah, because it felt so special when we were making it but and I kind of I kind of anticipated people are going to love the movie. But what it's been and what it's become and this 20 year relationship. That I get to have with the movie from the making of it now it's like the world. Yes, I mean audience has a relationship to these care and they love them all and that's why we're here and that's why we came back all these years later was because the audience wanted it wasn't us being like hey guys check us out we're back remember like no it wasn't that it was there's this love in this yearning to see what these characters have been up to and so I just I don't know I just felt like I got to be in this like supergroup 20 years ago and got back together to make another album and I love the album. And you guys all. All 4 of you. All 4 of you have very big 20 years since the last time we roll together okay everybody came back together who's the diva and why is it Stanley to see it's. Oh he's just he's so fussy about his clothes has he cooked for you that bitch has not made me. I have dropped so many hints that I would love to know I was like oh so you want to learn this dish what's it like and they'll tell me. But I've not yet received a crumb what if I go for some couch pepe Stanley yeah, okay ever since you started the devil worse product you've been associated with fashion. I'm so lucky because between devil was Prada one to and now mother Mary I've really gotten to explore the role of fashion in our lives. Friends with with the great designers Valentino and George Omani what did you learn from these fellas about your own personal style and and how to make those choices. Well Mister Amani was so generous with me and said and so consistent in his presence in my life and and I just from him I'd say I I learned that elegance can be really really daring and he was so meticulous about details when I would go to his shows I would just marvel every single detail so perfect and I would say oh my gosh you did this lighting and his beautiful niece Roberta would say my uncle. I was like whoa and she's like no no no yes he he was 80s he was up there adjusting lights so he cared so much so I think that that that sort of that passion which is what all the great designers that I met had and then from Valentino oh my gosh Valentino was more than just a friend he was my family and he made my wedding dress for me I didn't ask he offered and we spent so much time together one of vacations with him we had like I so many dinners so many laughs we use my karaoke partner. I had a karaoke birthday party at sing sing on the lower east side and Valentino came to my birthday party. Like that's how much like that that he came to the lower east side for me sing sing I love you but you kind of smell like yeast and so and he came and it was amazing and so from him. Getting off the yeast karaoke bar. It's gonna be a funny little segue we have editors thank God. But from him what I learned was just that the joy that comes from being devoted to beauty not just observing beauty but creating it and under and and treasuring it and valuing it and knowing that if you want to see beauty in the world it's not a passive thing you actually have to engage with it and an active beauty is an act of hope. And I just felt that he lived his life with such joy and such good humor and he had the most unbelievably vibrant spirit and I got to be his dear dear friend for 20 years and changed my life. That's lovely. You have to put the right back with more and half the way everybody. Inspired by jet engine silences. The Dyson hush jet purify powerfully purifies the entire room quietly capturing pollen allergens and pet dander removing odours and harmful gases such as N02 day and night. Hush jet powerful compact purification that's quiet. Everybody we're back with the star of Mother Mary and half away you play a pop star opposite Mikaela Cole. Pleasure best friend and and a wardrobe costume designer. Yes, she's a fashion designer and she's my former she's my best friend and former image architect. Okay so tell us a little bit more about what it's about. Well it's so my character. Who has been kind of one of the dominant pop presence for the last 20 years in the world. It's like a lady Gaga kind of we were inspired by so many people we wanted her to be a mother Mary to be her own thing but we listen to Beyonce Gaga Rosalia we listen to Taylor Swift of course Lord. You know all of these amazing but also James Blake and 9 inch nails and like so there are all these different elements that went into her. And yeah so she had an accident a few years ago and has gone back to her former best friend to basically asked her to make her address but it's more than a dress she's asking for an identity she's asking for healing she's asking for absolution for the wrong that she's done and Mikaela Cole has one of the greatest acting turns I have seen in a very long time torturing me about whether or not she's going to make me this dress. We have a clip here but what we need to know about this club this is the beginning of the movie this is Mother Mary at the height of her power singing an original song by Charlie XCX and Jack Antonoff called burial. Yeah. Beyonce. Like a crown. That's that there. Are you a secret are you a secret pop fan I just saw Gaga's last monster ball show on Monday I'm still. How did I understand terrible terror you mentioned Taylor Swift but how did she influence this. Oh well I mean she was just kind of like like an angel that like I felt like was over our heads all the time David Lowry is a huge swifty yeah and he was really influenced by the reputation tour for all of the concert scenes and then I was really influenced by her tour film Miss Americana and how vulnerable she just let herself be in that and so she kind of showing that. A pop stars who are so used to seeing like so in their power and so polished know what happens when they're kind of in between moments when they're having a moment of metamorphosis which can be so painful and what happens when you're a really public person and you're still trying to figure things out in the spotlight and I just I you know I was already a fan but after that I just had so much empathy for her and her humanity and and of course her talent you guys hang at all. We do know each other yeah yeah we do I actually. So we filmed this movie in Germany and over the course of a few years and when we finished the concert portion of the film which was the second year. We were in Bonn, Germany and Taylor was finishing up eras in Gelsenkirchen which I know we've all been to and he did 3 nights in Gelsenkirchen and I got tickets and it was and so like me and my family we went and it was amazing she came out on stage and it was just like the whole place exploded. And she just like makes the audience feel so loved and she made me feel so loved and I'm like oh my God and you're so cute you think Taylor Swift waving at you right now. I'm like you're so and so and then somebody tapped me on the shoulder and they said Taylor wants you to have this and I went what is happening and I opened it was a note where Taylor said I'm so happy you're here I'm going to be enthusiastically waving at you. And I was like oh my God she's so magical. Wow and I was right I am special. You can safely say thank you so much for being here. Mother Mary opens in theaters this Friday and half the way everybody.
