  • Strategic deception can serve righteous purposes when aligned with God's will, as demonstrated by Hushai's infiltration of Absalom's camp
  • Obedience to authority has limits when direct commands conflict with broader moral imperatives, illustrated by Joab's decision to kill Absalom
  • Personal grief and loss are valid responses even when God's plan ultimately prevails, shown through David's mourning for his son

Hey Bible readers, I'm Miss Emily and this is the Bible Recap. For kids! Today's Bible Burst! Second Samuel 1714 says the Lord had determined to defeat the counsel of a hithafel, which really was the better plan, so that he could bring disaster on Absalom. There is more sin and sadness today. While David is hiding from his son Absalom, who wants to be king, other people also try to hurt David, Mephibosheth, according to his servant Zeba, Shimei and even his own servant. Meanwhile, in Jerusalem, Absalom has convinced a lot of people to be on his side. Who shy is David's friend? And when David escaped from Jerusalem, who shy promised to keep David informed about what was happening there? So who shy pretends to be on Team Absalom and eventually Absalom lets who shy in on his plans? Who shy tricks Absalom into listening to his advice over a hithafels? Who shy also gets word back to David about what's happening and David sends his army to find Absalom's army. David tells his army not to hurt Absalom, but when Absalom gets tangled up in a tree, Joab, the commander of David's army, disobeys and kills Absalom. When David finds out that Absalom is dead, he cries and mourns for him. God is always working. Even with all the people plotting against David, God is at work. He chose David's line to bring Jesus into the world and absolutely nothing could stop him from doing that, not even the sins of his enemies. He's where the best plan is and he's where the joy is.
