Dr. Bob Martin and Dr. Adam Brockman address listener health questions spanning kidney function, gallbladder removal, diabetes management, and tinnitus. The episode emphasizes functional medicine approaches, dietary interventions, and targeted supplementation as alternatives to conventional pharmaceutical treatments.
Insights
- GFR blood tests are often unreliable for adults over 50; Cystatin C testing provides more accurate kidney function assessment
- Gallbladder removal increases colon cancer risk, a fact often omitted from patient discussions before surgery
- Post-gallbladder weight gain stems from inconsistent bile flow affecting fat digestion and nutrient absorption
- Over 250 pharmaceutical drugs can cause or worsen tinnitus, yet patients are rarely informed of this side effect
- Insulin resistance and poorly controlled diabetes require exercise as a non-negotiable component alongside dietary changes
Trends
Growing adoption of functional and integrative medicine approaches over conventional surgical interventionsIncreased awareness of medication side effects, particularly ototoxic drugs causing hearing damageShift toward tissue cell salt supplementation and homeopathic remedies for post-surgical compensationRising focus on bile flow optimization and fat-soluble vitamin absorption in post-gallbladder patientsEmphasis on pre-meal digestive bitters and enzyme supplementation for metabolic optimizationIntegration of blood sugar monitoring with triglyceride tracking for diabetes managementGrowing recognition of upper cervical misalignment as a root cause of tinnitusIncreased use of berberine and ALA as natural insulin sensitivity enhancers

And that's where this show comes in, and that's to bring our listeners back to the basics. To remind you, the listener, that healing doesn't come from a gadget or a quick fix. All we have to do is remind you how to get back there. And folks, this is the Dr. Bob Martin Show, where wisdom meets wellness and every breath brings you closer to your best self. So let's go ahead and open up the lines. And our first caller is waiting, and that is from Sherry in Oklahoma. Hi, Sherry from Oklahoma. I have a question, a concern about kidney function. My GFR is at a low of 46, and I'm wondering what I can take, what I can do to boost those numbers. All right. Well, Sherry, thank you for calling, and your GFR level of 26 suggests needs a little bit of help there. It's not just a lab number, but it's a call to action. But here's what I want you to know. The kidneys can often stabilize or even recover partial function when we support them intelligently and consistently. So, Dr. Bob, I want to start with what not to do. The kidneys' two worst enemies are dehydration and inflammation. And that means to limit the salt, the processed foods, pain relievers like ibuprofen, and also sugary beverages. So Sherry, I want you to hydrate properly. Take small steady sips throughout the day. Keep your blood volume stable without overwhelming your kidneys. Also aim for half your body weight in ounces of water daily. Now onto a to-do list, I want you to focus on a renal supportive diet. And that means options like crisp apples, cabbage, cauliflower, bell peppers, and garlic. I want you to replace animal proteins with more plant-based proteins like lentils and peas, which that creates a less acidic load on the kidneys themselves. And supplements matter here. I want you to look at coenzyme Q10. It helps to repair that mitochondrial energy in those kidney cells there. And ALA, that's an antioxidant that protects the nephrons, those kidney cells, from oxidative stress. And then also look at adding magnesium glycinate to reduce that vascular tension and support filtration. So you also want to maybe detox gently, not with the harsh flushes, but by supporting the liver's ability to handle waste that the kidneys can't. In this, I think of milk thistle and dandelion root. Those are both time-honored herbal remedies. And finally, control your blood sugar, your blood pressure, and inflammation, something known as the triple threat behind most kidney decline. If you work with a practitioner who understands functional medicine and will help you to design a program combining gentle detox, the low phosphate food choices in a targeted nutrient replenishing approach there. So Sherry, this should be more of a wake-up call that says you still have time. Your kidneys want to heal. So if you take that pressure off of them, you feed them what they need, and you can slow or even reverse that curve. Dr. Bob? All good information, Dr. Brockman. Sherry, thanks for your call. Yes, GFR is really a kind of a generic blood test. It's not the one that I think is the best blood test to evaluate kidney function. What I suggest you do is go back and have a test called Cystatin C. That's spelled C-Y-Statin, S-T-A-T-I-N-C. Cystatin C is a much better test, much more sensitive test. It measures protein levels of a protein produced in the body that shows that there's excess kidney function going on, specifically acting as a market or rather a marker for certain functions of your kidney. That GFR is notorious for always being low in adults past the age of 50. And usually it's because they're using a very large population in order to evaluate it. So that's what I suggest you start with. Next, all the suggestions that Dr. Brockman had are excellent. There are lots of foods you can eat that support kidney function, including fruits and berries and celery is one of my favorites to use. I have had really good success with kidney patients, those who do have true kidney problems, and we don't know whether you do or not. I think you need to get retested, maybe even retest the GFR to see if that was accurate, and then get this cystatin C blood test. There's also a new blood test you might want to look at called EBO. EBO is the latest thing on the block. It stands for extracorpiole blood oxygenation and ozonation. Basically, it's an intravenous therapy where they help to oxygenate and ozonate your blood to clean it up Because that's what the kidneys are. They're blood filters. So there may be some stress, some inflammation there that might be benefited by this EBO, E-B-O-O therapy. And functional and integrative doctors are now becoming aware of this new test. That's something that you should also consider. Great suggestions, Dr. Bob. And thanks for your call, Sherry. And folks, if you've got questions about your health, it's that easy. And also remember, you can give us a call at our toll-free hotline, which is 800-606-8822. Again, that's 800-606-8822. All right, Dr. Bob, let's get into an email question from Gary in Fallon, Nevada. He asks, my daughter has had her gallbladder removed when she was a senior in college. Now she is 40 years old and has gained more weight than what she'd like. I have given her ox bile and milk thistle. I have also given her stevia to replace sugar. I tried to get her on a plant-based diet. What can she do to also help with no gallbladder? All right, Dr. Bob? All right. That's a really good question because a lot of people lose their gallbladders unnecessarily, and she's likely to have been one of them. I've seen this in the many years that I practiced. Hundreds and hundreds of people would come in to my office and say, yep, I just got back from my doctor's office. I've been having some indigestion, some belching, some burping, some bloating, and they say that I have a gallbladder problem and they want to take my gallbladder out. And in as much as that can happen, it certainly can because sometimes the gallbladder becomes diseased and it's so far gone that there's no options. But the vast majority of people in my experience as a physician lose their gallbladders unnecessarily because, well, let's face it. You know, when you go to a doctor and they can't figure out what's wrong and, you know, they can do a procedure perhaps, that might be in the works for them. Kind of like the old cliche of give a carpenter a hammer and everything's a nail. That's an unfortunate situation. So for people who have their gallbladders right now still and haven't had them taken out, if anybody tells you to get a gallbladder surgery, get different opinions by functional and integratively trained physicians like chiropractors, naturopathic doctors, homeopathic doctors before you make that decision. Because if you lose your gallbladder, you have an increased risk of colon cancer, but they forget to tell you about that one. So that for this person, Dr. Brockman, I would suggest one, that they need to replenish tissue cell salts that they're losing because they've lost a very important organ that God wanted them to have for an entire lifetime that most human beings can live a normal life with as long as they stay off the standard American diet, which is the cause of it. Too much sugar, too much saturated fat, and not enough exercise or moving around activity. That's a perfect storm for gallbladder problems. And then you add to that obesity, it just ratchets it up. So this person should go to the health food store and pick up something called bioplasma. It is a formulation, a homeopathic tissue cell salt formulation by a company by the name of Hyland. Hyland, H-Y-L-A-N-D, Hyland's homeopathic tissue cell salts called bioplasma. Start on that. That'll be lifetime because once you have a gallbladder taken out, you're going to have to compensate for that. And if you don't compensate for it, you're going to have problems. Some people have chronic diarrhea. Some people have some other issues related to the digestive system, but they need these cell salts to protect them from the risk of colon cancer, which is driven up by loss of a gallbladder. With respect to the weight, it may or may not be related to the gallbladder being removed. It's really hard to say. There's certainly an interconnection with all tissues in the body. They all communicate together, the liver and the thyroid and the gallbladder and the pituitary gland. There's all these different axes that are going on within the body. And once you remove something, it kind of wobbles the whole endocrine system, and then it has to compensate. But as to whether or not the weight gain is directly responsible for the gallbladder removal, directly responsible for the weight gain, we don't know for sure. But it would be a good idea to see a functional or integrative doctor to get a full analysis rather than just, you know, start taking drugs to try to solve the problem. Yeah, and Dr. Bob, that's a great suggestion. And I want to say, Gary, thanks for the email, but also thanks for being that kind of parent who doesn't stop caring just because their child's grown up. So your daughter, her story here with the gallbladder, it echoes what I've seen many times, and that's post-gallbladder weight gain, the sluggish digestion, and that frustration over trying to do all the right things but still feeling not quite right. So I also want to say here's part of it. Once that gallbladder is gone, that bile storage and that time release with it goes away. That means that the fat digestion becomes inconsistent. So the liver, it makes the bile, but instead of it being stored and concentrated, it drips passively into the intestine. And the result of that is poor fat absorption, bloating, and then also nutrient deficiencies, especially in those fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K. so you've you've made some excellent suggestions to your daughter that ox bile it's a nature's replacement for for missing some of that bile function in most folks they see better digestion when taking that in the the range of about 125 to 100 or 250 milligrams with each meal that contains fat now milk milk thistle it's a good ally too that supports liver cell regeneration but also consider adding dandelion root or artichoke leaf. Both of these are known to promote bile flow naturally. Now, let's build on what Dr. Bob said about the weight gain. Without the proper digestion, even healthy fats can create that metabolic chaos. So my advice is to focus on the lighter fats. So think of avocados and olives, but also split them across smaller meals throughout the day. And then also pair those fats with leafy greens to trigger some mild bile production. And if we're speaking of metabolism, digestive bitters before meals, they are an old world trick that works wonders. One of these is wormwood, and that can help to stimulate bile and pancreatic enzymes. And she should also supplement with a broad-spectrum digestive enzyme that includes lipase, protease, and amylase, and that breaks down the food efficiently. And if she supports these hormones in blood sugar with chromium, magnesium, and cinnamon extract, especially she's going to try to move past some of that post-meal fatigue. and finally don't underestimate that liver and gut connection and with this i suggest taking dr o'hara's probiotics they they help to rebalance that microbiome and it also helps may help with that weight fluctuations or weight regulation and make sure she's staying hydrated with electrolytes because that bile flow, it relies heavily on good hydration. So in short, Gary, that ox bile, enzymes, bitters, hydration, and balanced, moderately fat diet, that's what she needs to help her new digestive system or, well, one that's been with her for quite some time now, but to balance that out. So she can indeed thrive now that she's got her gallbladder removed, but that music needs to start being mindful with eating and consistent support for her liver. All right, folks. Well, we're coming up on a break. So we're gonna take a quick pause, but I don't want you to wander off just yet. We're getting to your health questions today. All available 24-7 at drbob.com. All right, Dr. Bob, let's get back into our caller questions. And next up, we have Gene from Fort Smith, Arkansas. Good morning, Dr. Bob and Dr. Brockman. This is Gene from Fort Smith, Arkansas. Home of the snow today anyway. But I have a question regarding diabetes. I've had diabetes for a number of years. and my A1C stays high. Right now it's at 11.6. I just had a blood test the other day, and I'm wondering. I have a friend that has diabetes that lives in Florida, and he told me to get some Arm & Hammer baking soda and put one teaspoon of it in a warm glass of water in the morning and at night, and that will help it. Do you agree, and is that a plausible thing to do? Thank you. Well, Gene, thanks for your call from Fort Smith, Arkansas. And, yeah, across the nation, it's been unseasonably cold this winter. So looking for warmer weather my way as well. But Gene, that A1C level, it means that your average blood sugar is running roughly 285 milligrams per deciliter. And that's pretty high. So let's start by tackling the question on the baking soda. So baking soda, known as sodium bicarbonate, it can temporarily neutralize stomach acid or urinary acidity, but it does not lower blood sugar. And in fact, overuse can raise sodium levels and actually put strain on your kidneys and your heart. So if we're looking at this and we got two strikes already, diabetes and possibly vascular disease, that's a risky shortcut. So here's a better natural game plan for you. First, I want you to stabilize your insulin sensitivity. So if we look at cutting out refined carbs, sugar, and hidden syrups, and then build your plate around fiber-rich vegetables and lean proteins and healthy fats like olive oil and avocados. And then start every morning with 10 minutes of walking before breakfast. That movement before eating actually improves glucose uptake by up to 25%. Next, if we're looking at using some supplements, we need to do this strategically. We need to look at chromium, berberine, and ALA. They all have clinical data that shows that they improve insulin usage. So if we start with that and then we add magnesium, vitamin D, and omega-3s, these low levels of these are almost universal in poorly controlled diabetes. So finally, if we're looking at this, a lot of times in poorly controlled diabetes, inflammation is a big issue. So if we reduce inflammation, high glucose, it inflames arteries and nerves. So we look at this with the curcumin, cinnamon extract. They can all help to soothe those pathways. And Gene, remember, progress can happen within 90 days. So if you're tracking both fasting glucose in your morning weight, they should move together as insulin resistance starts to quiet down. And you don't necessarily need the baking soda. You need the discipline, the daily movement in a nutrient-dense plan that heals from that inside out. And Dr. Bob? All right. Dean, thank you for your call. Your A1C reading of 11.6 is more than double of what optimal should be. So you are on a fast track to major health problems because we know historically, when you look back, people with diabetes do not live for long periods of time. They are not long livers because it has so many other complications associated with heart disease and brain disease and loss of quality of life. It's just a circle the drain kind of a disease. It's a poisoning of your body slowly and surely by sugar that you're not using as a form of energy. So it becomes toxic to you. So you've got to work towards getting that A1C down close to 5.0, maybe up to 5.5. That's the sweet spot range you should be in. And there's ways you can get there. Exercise has to be a huge component. Without exercise, the dietary changes, the supplement recommendations are all going to fall short of your expectations. So that has to happen. I would also run concurrent monitoring of your blood sugar with triglycerides. Triglycerides are really the most sensitive fat that you can then look at to see what's really going on with blood sugar as well. We know that with diabetes, often we see a high glucose, fasting glucose, 10, 12 hours. A1C is high. Yours is extremely high. And of course, we see high triglyceride. Do you want to get your triglyceride count somewhere around 100? That is the sweet spot range to work towards. And as Dr. Brockman pointed out, you got to give up the sugar. You also have to get off fruit juice. No fruit juice with anybody who's struggling with diabetes or high blood sugar situations. White flour, sugar, all the junk food in the standard American diet. Unfortunately, the stuff we all love to OD on from time to time needs to be removed. I'm also a big fan of using B-complex vitamins, zinc, and a herb called bitter melon. They are phenomenal. along with Dr. Brockman's suggestions, you'll hit a home run if you can stay on a program such as we have laid out today. Well, great suggestions, Dr. Bob. And again, it goes back to stabilizing that insulin sensitivity and a diet starts there, cutting the refined carbs, that sugar in those syrups, the fruit juices, everything that you mentioned and building your plate around the important things like lean proteins, vegetables and the healthy fats. And also getting some movement in there, the daily walking, just all that makes a big difference. Okay, so folks, we're coming up on a break, but I don't want you to go off too far. Again call us at 800 or find us at drbob Now let get back into today questions We answering as many questions as we can from listeners The next up we have David from Poplar Bluff Missouri and he asked out of nowhere, I have developed tinnitus, characterized by a low hum in a high-pitched reining. I'm confident that one of you can help, and I would appreciate any suggestions you have. Thanks for your help in this matter. And Dr. Bob, I'll let you go ahead and start. What was the caller's name again, Dr. Bob? David in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. All right. All right. David, thanks for your call. I'm so glad you called in with this question because people are suffering in silence. Well, they're really not silent. They're ringing, but they're suffering thinking, well, there's nothing I can do about it. So I'll just suffer because I went to my doctor and they couldn't do anything for it, said learn to live with it. Uh, no, there may be some possibilities here, David. And that call that you just made, that email, any of these things that happen here on the show help other people because it sort of piques their interest. They may have the same problem. So here we go. The one thing that is the most common reason for ringing in the ears, also sometimes pronounced tinnitus or tinnitus is loud sounds. Like you may have been a person to, in the past, go to concerts, loud music concert. I mean, we've all been there. And the noise is like almost obscene, but we put up with it because we're there looking for entertainment. And if those decibels rise, I think, past, I think it's like 57 or 60 decibels, it starts to create damage to a very sensitive part of your hearing mechanism called the cochlea. There's little hairs in the cochlea, and those little hairs are like very sensitive little neurons. And when the sound is excessive to those hairs, it will damage them and sometimes obliterate them and sometimes sort of like mow them down like you're mowing grass. So you got to be aware. And I'm talking about sound can be anything from loud music to being in industry at your job. And there's a lot of noise that exceeds the decibels that the ear tolerates. So you got to look at that. The other thing that people don't realize, Dr. Brockman, about ringing in the ears, and most people are not informed about this, there are over 250 different pharmaceutical drugs that either cause or make worse ringing in the ears or tinnitus. 250 of them. I used to lecture all around the country on this topic, so it's sort of one of those things where you go, wow, the more you learn, the more you realize you didn't know about the topic, but it's really important. And then we're talking about drugs, very common drugs here, like aspirin, ibuprofen, certain antibiotics, chemotherapy, and about 244 other ones that can cause ringing in the ears. So the first thing somebody should do is get out of the noise if they're in it. And if they're taking any pharmaceutical drugs whatsoever, and the average person at the age of 65 is on six or more, so you've got to really evaluate that one. We are a major drug nation for which we get little to no health out of it other than just managing the disease, never looking for the cause of the problem, it seems. So these are some suggestions I recommend. It's hard to really get to the cause of ringing because one person's ringing can be completely different than another person. There are many different reasons for it. You just have to go down the list and find out, okay, so I've covered that one. starting with removing yourself from loud noises. And that would involve, if you're using headsets or earbuds or any of that kind of stuff, you've got to get away from that. If you're taking any pharmaceuticals whatsoever, start looking them up online to see if ringing in the ears or tinnitus is part of that problem. Caffeine is another one. Very common reason for ringing in the ears is caffeine. So if you're using any caffeine, I don't care if it's one cup a day or half a cup a day, it doesn't matter. Get off of it because it could be exacerbating the problem. And then we get into, okay, so then if those are all removed and we've removed the reasons for it, luckily, if we go down the line, what do we do to help solve it? Well, another problem that can happen is you can have a misalignment of the upper neck area in your body that can absolutely cause hearing problems or ringing in the ears. So the doctor of choice in that case is to visit your chiropractic physician and have them do a very careful neurologic or orthopedic and structural examination on your neck area, particularly the upper neck area, the C1, C2, C3, and your occiput. If there's any kind of misalignment, derangement, subluxation of that area, it can disrupt the neurons and the blood flow to your hearing mechanism. Very important there. As far as treatment goes beyond that, acupuncture has been successful in many cases of ringing in the ears or tinnitus. I would also look at homeopathic medicines. Years and years ago, I formulated a product called RingStop. I think it's still in the marketplace. You might want to check it. You might want to check it online or go to the health food store. I don't have anything. The company was sold many, many over a decade ago, but Ringstop was a combination of herbs and homeopathic remedies. I think it's in a homeopathic formulation right now. That might be an option for you as well. Yeah, that's great suggestions, Dr. Bob. And folks, we're going to be coming up on a break, so we'll be right back. And each week on this program, we return to one powerful truth. You are not a passenger in your health. You are the pilot. You chart the course with every meal, every breath, and every thought. And just like a compass, your body is always trying to point you in the direction of balance. If only you'll listen. And we live in this world and it's selling tens of thousands of wellness trends. And we often forget the basics and that's hydration, movement, rest, and human connection. And don't get me wrong. I love to explore the latest health gadgets and trends, but we also want to bring back it to simplicity because healing isn't complicated. It just needs to be consistent. When you start treating your body like an ally instead of an obstacle, everything starts to change. And as this hour closes, I want you to ask yourself, what's one thing I can do differently this week that my future self will thank me for? Maybe it's skipping the soda for water or getting sunlight before screen time or saying no to one more demand so you can say yes to recovery. That's your next breakthrough. And it doesn't start in a clinic. It starts in your mindset. And with that, I want to ask Dr. Bob, do you have any final thoughts? I do. It's been said by wise people in the past, you know, the human body needs no help, just no interference. So the goal there is to remove whatever is interfering with it functioning in an optimal way. That interference can come in the form of mental or psychological or emotional interference. It can come in the form of physical interference or it can come in the form of toxic environmental interference or nutritional interference. Just remove interference. Let the body do what it wants to do, what it should do, what it can do. Get out of its way and let the healing begin. Great, great thoughts, Dr. Bob. And, you know, thanks for joining us today.
