Summary

This episode is a Catholic rosary meditation focused on the theological connection between Old Testament symbols of God's presence (the pillar of fire and cloud, the Ark of the Covenant) and Mary as the new visible sign of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament. The meditation explores biblical parallels and theological teachings about Mary's role as the sacrament of the Holy Spirit.

Insights
  • Mary serves as a tangible, relatable representation of the Holy Spirit, making the abstract concept of the Spirit more accessible to believers through a human figure
  • The theological concept of Mary as the 'sacrament of the Holy Spirit' (a visible sign that makes something present) bridges Old Testament symbolism with New Testament theology
  • Deepening one's relationship with Mary through daily consecration and attention to her inspirations is presented as a practical method to increase the fruitfulness of the Holy Spirit's action in one's life
  • Major 20th-century theologians including Cardinal Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI) recognized Mary as the most perfect representation and icon of the Holy Spirit for the world
  • The episode demonstrates how biblical typology and parallel narratives (David with the Ark, Mary with Elizabeth) reveal deeper theological truths about Mary's role in salvation history

Welcome to our daily rosary meditation. Let's begin in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Let's call to mind all those we've promised to pray for. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day, He rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women. Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women. Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women. Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, as now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Our first mystery. Today we continue through salvation history. In the Exodus, God set Israel free and gave them a visible sign of his presence and care. The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. When the people saw Pharaoh and all his charioteers closing in, they were terrified. The sea was before them. Pharaoh's army was behind them. Then the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them, coming between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel. Yet even still, the Israelites panicked. But Moses said to them, Fear not, stand firm and see the salvation that the Lord will work for you today. the book of wisdom tells us that the pillar of cloud and fire was actually a sign of the holy spirit and describing what the spirit did in the exodus the book of wisdom says she led them by a marvelous road she herself was their shelter by day and their light through the night. She brought them across the Red Sea, led them through that immensity of water, and while she swallowed their enemies in the waves, and then spat them out from the depths of the abyss. So it was the Holy Spirit, under the sign of the pillar of cloud and fire, that led, protected, and provided for Israel all the way through the desert to the promised land. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Blessed art thou among women, blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of thy mercy. Our second mystery. After the crossing of the Red Sea, Israel came to Mount Sinai, where God gave them a new visible sign of the Holy Spirit, the Ark of the Covenant. In Exodus 25, God commanded Moses to build the Ark, and when the ark was completed in Exodus 40, then the cloud overshadowed the ark and filled it with the glory of the Lord, that is, the presence of the Holy Spirit. And then we're told, For the cloud of Yahweh rested on the ark by day and a fire shone within the cloud by night for all the house of Israel to see. And so it was for every stage of their journey. The ark was the visible physical sign that the Holy Spirit was carrying the Israelites through every step of their journey. And then at the end of 40 years, Moses reflected on that entire journey, and he said, in the wilderness too, you saw how Yahweh carried you as a man carries his child all along the road you traveled on the way to this place How beautifully Moses states that the Spirit carried them every step of the way Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us a stay our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Blessed art thou among women, blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us in our insnown at the hour of our death. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women. Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us in our insnown at the hour of our death. Amen. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, as now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. O my Jesus. Forgive us our sins. Save us from the fires of hell. Our third mystery. Everything in the Old Testament prefigures what Jesus and Mary would do for us in the New Testament. In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit carried the Israelites through the Exodus under the visible sign of the pillar of fire and cloud and the physical sign of the Ark of the Covenant. But then the Ark was lost forever. Why? How could somebody lose such an important thing? Well, because God was preparing for a better sign of the Spirit. In the Annunciation, the angel tells Mary, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called Holy, the Son of God. I hope you caught that the cloud and the Holy Spirit overshadowed the ark, and the Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary, and the connection is deliberate. In the Greek translation of the Exodus, the same verb is used to describe the cloud overshadowing the ark that Luke uses to describe what the Holy Spirit does to Mary. The cloud overshadowed the dwelling place of God in the Old Covenant, and the Holy Spirit now overshadows Mary. What once descended upon the ark now descends upon the Virgin. What once filled the Ark, now fills the Virgin. The message is clear. Mary is the pillar of cloud and fire. She is the new Ark of the Covenant. Mary is the new visible, physical sign of the Holy Spirit. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is. in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen. As it was in the beginning, is now, never shall be world without end amen oh my jesus forgive us our sins save us from the fires of hell lead all souls to heaven especially those most in need of thy mercy our fourth mystery luke draws a parallel between two events the ark of the covenant coming to david in second samuel 6 and mary coming to elizabeth in luke chapter 1 to teach us that mary is the new ark of the covenant the physical sign of the Holy Spirit In 2 Samuel 6 we hear that David arose and went to the hill country of Judah to bring up from there the Ark of God. Luke chapter 1, Mary arose and went with haste to the hill country, to a city of Judah. And David said, How can the Ark of the Lord come to me? While Elizabeth exclaims, Who am I that the mother of my Lord should come to me? In 2 Samuel, the ark goes to the house of Obed-Edom, and Mary goes to the house of Zechariah. The ark remained at the house of Obed-Edom for three months. Mary stayed at the house of Zechariah three months. David and all Israel were rejoicing, while Mary rejoices with her Magnificat. David leaps and dances before the ark. Wow. At the visitation, it's John the Baptist in the womb of Elizabeth who does the leaping and dancing. It's clear. Luke is trying to teach us that Mary is the new ark of the covenant, the visible, physical sign of the Holy Spirit. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women. Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, trotzdem, Amen. fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. As it was in the beginning, as now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Oh, my Jesus. Forgive us our sins. Save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of thy mercy. Our fifth mystery. In the New Testament, the sign of the Holy Spirit is not a pillar of fire or a wooden box. The sign of the Holy Spirit is a virgin and mother. Mary is the perfect human expression of the Holy Spirit. And so profound is Our Lady's expression of the Spirit that St. John Paul II said that she is able to serve as the maternal face of the Holy Spirit. Listen to what John Paul said. From the cross, the Savior wished to pour out upon humanity rivers of living water, that is, the abundance of the Holy Spirit, but he wanted this outpouring of grace to be linked to a mother's face, his mother's. Calvary reveals the close and enduring link between the gift of the Holy Spirit and the gift of Mary as mother. The link between the gift of the Holy Spirit and the motherhood of Mary emerges again at Pentecost when she awaited with the disciples for the coming of the Holy Spirit. Now, here is the golden line from John Paul. Therefore, he says, as the bond with Mary grows deeper, so the action of the Spirit and the life of the church grows more fruitful. John Paul just said that by developing a deeper bond, a deeper friendship with Mary, enables the action of the Spirit to grow more fruitful in our lives. So, let me suggest a resolution. The Israelites would not take one step forward unless the pillar of cloud rose and led them. So let's learn from them. Let's not take one step forward until Our Lady leads us. Let's begin each day by consecrating ourselves to Mary. And then as we go through the day, ask her to inspire you and then do your best to pay attention and follow those inspirations. Learn to pause. Learn to ask. and learn to let her carry you forward. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women. Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women. Blessed art thou among women. Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us in our hand at the hour of our death. Amen. Amen. is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us in our ends now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women. Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us in our ends now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, as now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell lead all souls to heaven especially those most in need of thy mercy Saint Michael the Archangel defend us in battle be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil may God rebuke him we humbly pray and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host by the power of God cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl throughout the world seeking the root of souls in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit Amen. What caught your attention with this one or what maybe surprised you or didn't surprise you? Or maybe what question do you have for me today? My line of thinking today is probably treading a very thin line of heresy because I don't know what I'm talking about. Or I'm just reflecting. So it's not, I guess, proceed with caution. But I was thinking about the way that the Holy Spirit has always been a little vague in people's minds. Or like you've said before, hard to identify with these less tangible representations of the Holy Spirit. And Mary being someone that we can relate to through whom we get to know the Spirit. and that it's not as if God couldn't have shown his face or couldn't have chosen a very physical representation of the Spirit and even the Father himself. But there's something beautiful in getting to know the Spirit through others and specifically through Mary that teaches us how God does interact with us and through people. which I think a is probably some interesting theology but just my reflection I don't know what you think about that I don't know what did that make you think about or what did this meditation make you think about right now in these days I've been working with Father Gregor Bartoszek. He is the greatest living scholar on the theology of St. Maximilian Kolbe. He actually runs the theological doctoral program from Kolbe's monastery in Poland. And he wrote an amazing book on the relationship of the Holy Spirit and Mary in Polish. And I'm working with him to help him get it translated and published in English. And so I bet each night I've been going through this, this book. And it's so amazing because Bartesek shows that St. Maximilian Kolbe knew this intimate connection between the Holy Spirit and Mary. and Colby called Mary the quasi-incarnation, almost the incarnation of the Holy Spirit. And then Bartoszek goes through and he shows how these giant theologians back in the 1950s, Muellen, Congar, Lorenton, Phillips, Montabonami, Cardinal Ratzinger, who became Pope Benedict, that they saw that Mary, that the Holy Spirit made Mary the most perfect representation, sign, icon of the Holy Spirit for the world. and I've also been working with one of the members of the dicastery of the doctrine of the faith now there's been this big debate in the world going on right now about calling Mary co-redemptrix and mediatrix and a member of the dicastery contacted me and said actually the best way to understand Our Lady is what you've put forward in your little book that Mary is the sacrament of the Holy Spirit. Now, not like the seven sacraments, but a sacrament in the sense of a visible sign that makes something present, that Mary is the visible sign that makes the Holy Spirit present to us. And so I'm praying this meditation. I'm thinking about how all of this is coming together. And I'm really just amazed. What does that make you think? The phrase makes you think of is complicated here because it's more of processing. Yeah. So I don't exactly have a response for it. I'm just processing and agreeing. I'm looking forward to, I'm hoping to get this translation of Father Bartoszek's book done so that when we go to Poland, we can kind of celebrate together. That would be fantastic. the publishing of his book in English. What a delight that would be. So that's what I'm working hard on to get that done so that we can go and celebrate it in friendship. But we stand in a great line of these unbelievable theologians, especially Colby. Continuing to think about it, continuing to understand. Well, thanks for the conversation. Thank you. Let's be apostles of friendship, good conversation, and the rosary. Share this with others.
