Summary

Doug Van Dorn discusses his research on Genesis 6 and the historical interpretation of angels versus the Sethite view, presenting evidence from 25 early Christian authors who unanimously supported the supernatural interpretation. The episode explores how certain theological narratives may have been altered or reinterpreted over time, with implications for biblical textual criticism and Christian doctrine.

Insights
  • Early Christian consensus on Genesis 6 interpretation was overwhelmingly supernatural (angel view), contradicting modern claims that this is a novel interpretation
  • Textual criticism and historical context are essential tools for understanding how theological narratives have been shaped and potentially rewritten over centuries
  • Jewish myths and genealogies in early Christian texts were seen as competing directly with gospel truth and faith, suggesting deliberate theological conflicts
  • The interpretation of biblical texts has been influenced by leadership decisions in the first and second centuries, with lasting doctrinal consequences
  • Modern Christian teaching on Genesis 6 may reflect later reinterpretations rather than early Christian consensus or original textual intent

Christians, 25 different Christian authors, 25. This makes nearly 50 total texts that we have. 25, our first 25 Christian examples of Genesis 6 being talked about, whether it's Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Turtellian, there's a whole bunch of them. 100% of them take the angel view. How many of you ever heard that growing up? Because what I heard growing up is that the traditional view is the Sethite view and you are bringing a novel interpretation to the text. Guys, when your first 50 examples of this text are all supernatural, I'm not the one who's making stuff up. Let's go. That was Doug Van Dorn from our session at Blurrycom 3 last fall here in Nashville, Tennessee. He's been there since the beginning dropping bombs on us and our listeners and we love Doug. If you want to listen to all of our conferences, we have three conferences here in Nashville that we've done and two in Costa Rica. It's all bonus material for our members. A vasty-skellow eggs that tide beer rising in the secrets of the ancient spester and one mighty captain now comes down the cave. A man who's wrestled with giants, battled the unseen and mapped the forgotten realms. Heist-chair mugs and roar like a thunder for this mythological maniac. Doug Van Dorn. Come stand away, come stand away with me. Come stand away, come stand away, come stand away with me. Doug Van Dorn! Let's go. Give it up for Doug Van Dorn. What a legend. It wasn't Rush, but Styx had to do, you know. Is Rush your favorite band? Yeah. And they're coming to Denver. They're coming to Denver. So excited. They don't know who Rush is. They haven't seen Back to the Future yet. Then they really won't know what the greatest 80s movie ever is. What? Strange Brew, eh? Yeah. Beauty. They worked our clothes, eh? You saw Jedi 17 times, eh? Doug, you've been familiar on the show since the beginning. And I always joke that I had to call the church hotline and leave a message. Old school. Real 80s to get you to come on the podcast. So grateful you did. We've had so many great conversations over the years. And we got another one today. You know? Yeah. Changing. We got changing of scripture. It's a real controversial deal. And we were having a fun discussion with this other lunch hour, guys. This is going to be a fun one with our favorite, other favorite in-house theologian, Dr. Joel Modamale, who's backstage. His back is hurt. By the way, he's here. He just is wearing a back brace because he still thinks he can play basketball. We can get to that tomorrow. It's those carpet floors, man. That's not what happened. Turn an ankle. Turn an ankle. But, yeah, Doug, this is... Where do we start? Where do we start? All right, guys. So this is a... Let's see. This is my third blurry con. Yeah, let's go. We did the... All the blurry creatures of the Bible the first year. Yeah, we did. And had that great overhead, right? And then last year, the power went out. That's right. Like 15 minutes, remember that? And this year is going to be probably the most serious one that I've done. Okay. So I actually consider this some of my most important work. And it's why I wanted to bring it to you guys. That's why you didn't wear your Bigfoot shoes this year. We're going to talk about Genesis 6 and why it matters and why actually our view is right. Hey, hey, hey, hey. Let's go. Let's go. Very subtle. Come on, baby. I'm not going to leave anything held back on this one. Yeah, I love it. I might get preaching halfway through this thing. So we're here for it, baby. So we'll see. So I'm going to begin this by going to, we're going to have a little bit of a Bible say today. Some of you might geek out and nerd out here a little bit. We're going to do some textual criticism that might put some of you to sleep. A couple of people, I heard one person, woo! Yeah. Textual criticism. Yeah. Other people are like, what is textual criticism? Well, you are going to find out and you're going to find out why it matters. All right. So I'm going to, I'm going to go to Paul's letters to Timothy and Titus first. I'm going to give you five verses. These five verses have often been taken. It's about the word myth. Paul says things like, have nothing to do with irreverent silly myths. And I've always heard people say, well, this is talking about Greek mythology. They should never talk about that. I don't think so. You have to read these things in context. So after he says that, he says, rather train yourself for godliness, which means that the myth that they're entertaining is somehow keeping them from godliness. I've never read a Greek myth that really makes me care either way about how I behave. All right. Here's another one. He sings the people will turn away from listening to the truth and wandering off into myths. So in this one, the myth is opposed to the truth. Now, honestly, Greek mythology, Babylonian mythology, Egyptian mythology, it's not competing with the Bible for the truth. It's something else. So it has to be closer to the truth than those things are. How about this one? We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. But we were eyewitnesses to His majesty. Talking about the transfiguration, a little thing we talked about last year. We did. Yeah. Yeah. Then we're getting closer to them here that I want to talk about as we get into this. They will devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. The world's out talking about. The Mormons. The denny says that they... Definitely the Mormons. Clearly. Clearly. The myth was already living in those days. Prophetic, yeah. These things, he says they promote speculations rather than the stewardship that is from God that is by faith. So somehow genealogies and myths are messing around with people's faith in Jesus. What? And then here's the last one. They devote themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people to turn away from the truth. And in that context, the truth, it literally is the gospel. Jewish myths that turn people away from the gospel. That's what we're going to look at. Let's do it. Now, this is an honest caveat and what I'm going to say, this is not in any way meant to be anti-Semitic. We're not going after the Jewish people here, but we are going to go after the leaders in the first and second century that Jesus went after. Do you remember how badly these scribes, Pharisees, teachers of the law went after Jesus? And do you remember what Jesus said to them, the things he called them? You are a brood of vipers. You are whitewashed tombs. Whoa, T. We pronounce this, whoa upon woe on these guys. We're going to look at their grandsons today. All right? And why in the world this matters to Genesis?
