Summary

Bo Reynolds, a 63-year-old from Harlan County, Kentucky, recounts his 1983 Bigfoot sighting on a remote mining road where he observed a 7-8 foot tall, bipedal creature with disproportionately large leg muscles before it leaped down a steep hillside. The episode explores his detailed physical description, subsequent research into similar sightings, and how the experience fundamentally changed his perception of reality and sparked decades of investigation into cryptid encounters in Appalachia.

Insights
  • Eyewitness credibility increases significantly when observers maintain consistent, detailed descriptions over 40+ years without embellishment or seeking validation
  • Geographic clustering of sightings in remote Appalachian mining regions suggests habitat suitability and reduced human interference enable creature survival and movement
  • Witnesses often experience cognitive freeze during encounters, prioritizing observation over documentation, explaining lack of photographic evidence despite close proximity
  • Skepticism about cryptids decreases when personal experience occurs, shifting believers from requiring proof to accepting mystery as part of natural world
  • Regional folklore and family oral histories contain embedded warnings suggesting multi-generational awareness of unknown creatures in specific mountain areas
Trends
Increased reporting of Dogman sightings in past 10 years compared to historical Bigfoot documentation, suggesting either population shift or awareness increaseWitnesses describing anatomically inconsistent creatures (lean upper body, massive lower body) across different geographic locations and time periodsGrowing interest in cryptozoology among rural populations with direct land access and extended wilderness exposureCorrelation between mining/logging operations and sighting frequency in Appalachian regions with extensive road networksShift from kill-to-prove mentality to acceptance-without-proof among experienced witnesses, reducing incentive for lethal encountersPattern of creatures deliberately positioning themselves to be seen by humans, suggesting possible intentional contact behaviorEmergence of Dogman encounters in populated areas (sidewalks, neighborhoods) versus Bigfoot sightings in remote wildernessMulti-generational family knowledge of creature presence in specific geographic locations passed through oral tradition

My name is Bo Reynolds. I live here in southeastern Kentucky, Harlan County. I'm 63 years old, and I had an experience back in 83, road crossing. But up to this time, I never believed in these things. my dad we all been in the mountains hunting chinsane and never seen nothing my dad always was interested in the black panthers but you know hardly ever i've never seen one people see them but i didn't believe in this stuff my dad always said when i started hunting by myself he said if you ever see anything strange if you ain't got it on the end of a rope to prove that you've seen it don't talk to nobody they'll just you know make a laugh and stalk out of you so that's kind of how it was and i never really believed in bigfoot i've heard about it stuff never really really believed in it but i don't think no one does to actually see one so that's um up to the 83 that's uh i think i was 20 just turned 22 or get ready to turn 22 and i had that experience and um when i had this experience after i had it really i mean it just i really It was a shock. It really was just a shock. I started reading about other people having experiences and stuff and trying to validate what I've seen as real. My brother-in-law was with me. He also seen it. Very clear. Then I started thinking back. When I was younger, me and my buddies used to camp. We had some things go on that really didn't put it together as Bigfoot. So I started reading other people's encounters, like the rock throwing, the grunts and the growls, and those sort of things. So that kind of ties in with what other people seen and experienced and reported. My encounter happened, it was between 3.30 or 4 in the morning. This road, in fact, we used to cross it to shortcut from coming over into Llewellyn. That's where me and my brother and I worked at the coal mines. And really a rough road. It was like a washboard, a beach vehicle to death. I mean, it's real steep. And really, it's hard to travel in wintertime. Even right now, it's a dangerous road to travel, even though it's paved, made it, actually, it's worse. But we was on our way to work and got what I call down on the Lou Allen side. I think the road number is 179. Halfway down, there's a big curve. And there was a little bit of snow. It was about 13 degrees that morning because I remember standing on the bank before we left town. Probably a little cooler up there. as I was coming down this road my jeep was rattling it makes all kinds of noise anything could hurt me coming a mile away not many people travel it especially when it's bad and it was bad the conditions were weather I come to this curve and it makes it goes into the right and it comes back out and runs to the left you can almost see over to the next curve where it straightens out and in between that's this creek that runs through it i seen something real dark that's what caught my eye now we didn't have bears maybe a few deer but never had bears or nothing else just bobcats and turkeys stuff like that i guess the biggest game then was probably a deer and um we just started getting bears in in here in the late 80s but i seen this dark shape and i thought first something through my mouth somebody threw something out big i thought a deep freezer but so well that's been off a big deep freezer not as happened within seconds but anyway as my mouth was kind of wondering what somebody threw out i said whatever it is i'll i'll be up next to it here in a second i took my off just for a second and my peripheral vision i thought i seen it move and that's when it really got my attention so i kind of stayed focused on it watching the road. I wasn't going fast, maybe 12, 14 miles an hour. I got into that curve as I straightened out to this wide spot where this object was at the time. I didn't know what it was. I straight, I squared up with it. It was on the left side of the road, on the edge. I almost stopped. This thing, then it stood up. I said, oh lord. It stood up. It turned its head. Looked right. I mean, it's like it looked right over my headlights into me, and I was in the Jeep, and it set up pretty high. It's the one step that's out in the road. Just standing there, this thing really wanted me to see it. It could have left way before I got there. I know it had to hear me come beating down that hill. I know my headlights had seen it. This thing really, I think, really wanted me and my brother-in all to see it. That's just how I feel. Wasn't nothing threatening about it, nothing scary. but as it was in the road it looked right at me turned its head squatted down and when it squatted down the leg muscles on this thing were huge I can't describe extremely large muscles from the waist down and I'll back up a little bit, I'll give the scriptures up in a second when it squatted down it looked one more time and just took one big leap and clear that wide spot. Went down that, I mean, straight down. When I say straight down, I mean literally it's almost straight down. I pulled over and get out my Jeep. I could hear it way down the creek. And I mean, it didn't take long. I played a whole process, probably 10, 20 seconds. But then this thing, when they stepped out in front of my headlights, right there square in front of me, from the shoulders down, I give you a very detailed description of the waist up. It was real skinny. Real skinny. You look like there's a little bit of grayish mixed in it. I couldn't tell if it's skin or the hair. It's the longer hair. The chest and arms had longer hair than the legs. And it's very skinny. The very small head had a buttocks on it. It was just extremely round. but from the waist down the hair on it was thicker it's shorter like a domino pincher or a bulldog or something you could really see the muscle definition really really the legs were just i just keep going back to how big the legs were huge on this thing and uh i was just quite an i also noticed the ankles are thick it's like the muscles the calf muscles went from the knee straight down to the ankle joints i mean it wasn't much just real thick calf muscles and huge thigh muscles um i had a gun there never even gave that a thought in the console team and my brother-in-law um i was speechless just a man trying to process i didn't even think about even wouldn't he shot it anyway wasn't that scary it just it just happened and that's when you you know your uh perception of reality in this world changes when you see this and you got so when I with you saying it after this thing jumped off the road as I was pulling over I looked at my brother and I said did you see it and all he said was yeah that's all he could say after I looked around a little bit what this thing was doing somebody set some garbage out and it was strewn out a little bit so this thing I guess is going through the garbage maybe there's a little bit of food in it I don't know why it didn't try to get on over the hill where I couldn't see it when it heard me coming, but it didn't. And from that day on, I'm just being like reading, doing – I've read so many – I couldn't tell you how many reports I've read of people having these sightings. The animal, the physical part of it, seems to be a whole lot different than these 800, 900-pounders. This thing was 7 1⁄2 foot, maybe 8, but it's very skinny. I still said I weighed 350 pounds with the muscle mass on it. I didn't see no glow of the eyes. Of course, it's dark. It really lit up out from the waist down by my headlights. I was probably 25 feet from it, if that, maybe a little bit closer. But I had stopped by the time it squatted down just looking at this. I mean, on your way to work, you know, 3.30 or 4 in the morning and something like this just appears basically. You know, I mean, you just see something, you know, it's not supposed to be real. That's when things change. And ever since that experience, as I started investigating, reading other people's reports, talking to a lot of local people here came forward, had experiences. And the books, articles I read, podcasts, people talk about red eyes and stuff. And I look back on some experiences me and my buddies had when I was younger. possibly could have been Bigfoot encounters, but I just brought up, I just feel not, if I see something moving in bushes, I don't want to call it a Bigfoot or a deer or a bear unless I know for sure it's what I've seen. So a lot of people see things moving in the woods or they have blurry pictures or they don't really have a clear view of it. And they'll try to, like a dark spot that looks like a man sitting, or a big foot sitting back in the shadows of a forest. I don't do that. If I didn't see this thing as clear as I did, I would have never said nothing. I would have just rolled it off as something else, and it would never bother me again. But this thing has always been in my mind as to what it was. It's a mystery. Starting a business can be overwhelming. It's time to see what you can accomplish with Shopify by your side. I guess I love mysteries, trying to figure it out. But that's basically what it is for me. After that, I started on logging business. I logged. There's not many places I haven't been within a 50-mile radius of this place. Never had any more experiences. Never seen no foot tracks. Talked to people that had seen these things. But as far as me and myself, after I've seen this, I've never had any more experiences that I could say it'd be Bigfoot. I've had some areas that you could just feel a presence in them. You know, I think we've all been in places like that. It's just kind of like you go into an area and then all of a sudden just a real heavy dread, a real heavy dark feeling come over you. You just feel like there's a presence there, an evil presence. I've been in those places. I don't know if it has anything to do with Bigfoot or not, but I think anybody that's in the mountains and the up here in these mountains and the Appalachian Mountains, you're going to encounter those spots sooner or later if you spend time in the woods. You know, again, it's just a guess. We're just guessing if that's anything to do with a Bigfoot. Or now I'm hearing a lot about dogmen. I don't, you know, I can't say I don't believe in that. I've never seen one, but I did see a Bigfoot. So who knows really what's out there. The color of this thing, I'll call it. It's like the arms and the chest hair were of a reddish, brownish tint. The leg hair was definitely dark, maybe a real dark brown, but almost black. real skinny from the waist up. Gee, the arms were long. The forearms seemed to be from the elbow up to the shoulder seemed normal in a minute, but the forearm bone from the elbow to the wrist seemed, it was a lot longer. Quite a bit longer than the upper part of the arm. And the hands, I couldn't see fingers, but if you close your hands together and your fingers, and you have that kind of spade look. That's what this looked like. I mean, I could see the shape of the hands, but I couldn't see individual fingers. And I think it was his fur, maybe covering them. I don't know. People talk about, I've seen a lot of reports about how big their heads are or their eyes glow. I didn't see that. The head, this thing, to me, maybe the shoulders were so wide, I don't know. The head did seem low to the shoulders, but it was small. It's like it had a small head. I didn't notice no chronicle. I know anything unusual, just the head looked small or a little bit too small for the shoulders, I guess you could say. But it did twist its neck. It didn't turn its body. When it looked at me, it turned its neck very clearly. It was on the – didn't know it has a neck. A lot of people claim that they just sat on the shoulders, but there must be some sort of neck joint there or something. I don't know the anatomy of it. I couldn't identify ears, even though I thought I seemed like a little bit of an ear. It could have been the tuff of a hair on its side of its head when it kneeled down. And when it did look at me, when it's kneeled down, I just can make out vague images of its face. Nothing infinitive about it I can make out. I think I was more focused on those leg muscles. I mean, I just can't describe them. I was blown away by the muscles in this thing's legs. And the power it had and the leap it made from the center of this road to clear that white spot and land as far as it did down that hill. It was unbelievable. Unbelievable how just one leap, this thing, how far it jumped. And just the power in those legs, it was just something else. Now, after not too long ago, the guy came in talking about a guy and his family. the secondhand story but he said he talked to a guy that said he seen the same thing i did described it just like i did powerful legs real skinny body but it was in the garbage dump him and his wife and kids seen it and it stood up looked at him and took off almost an identical experience i had just in different location a different time but his description of that almost sound a whole lot like the one i've seen and i just often wonder if it wasn't the same one because it really wasn't that far apart. And, you know, it's, I know it's not an exciting story, but I mean, to get as close as I did to it, there's no misidentification. There's no way possible. It was just, it was bipedal. And I, in my report at BFRO, I said 300, 350 pounds, I believe. I think I said seven foot, but I was only like 21 years old. maybe 20 or 21. It could have been 8 foot. I don't know. It was 27, 8 foot. But I can still remember, you can probably ask me 20 more years from now, and I can still give you the same description of it. The muscles, the buttocks, it's powerful. I often joke about it, saying if I was to build as good as it was, I wouldn't wear no clothes. I mean, this thing was, it was impressive. But what was only odd about it how big the legs were compared to the upper body. But I don't know. It's just like you took the Incredible Hulk and a real skinny NBA or a college basketball player and put the Incredible Hulk's legs on a real skinny basketball player and cover it in hair. And that's kind of how I would describe it. And that's basically the core of my story. Nothing prior to that, nothing after that. it was just going through some small little bag of garbage somebody threw out. I guess there might have been a little bit of food or something in that that smelled or investigated I have no idea The roads were packed snow It had a snow a few days before that Some of the sides of the mountain were melted off. Some wasn't. But in that area, just the pack down, I really honestly didn't look at tracks. I was looking over the hill. I could hear it down in the creek moving, but I couldn't see nothing. It was pitch dark still yet. So I had to go on to work. then after work got out looked around but um we've never seen uh nothing else since then and one more thing that same area my brother told me a boy claimed to see the same thing about a half mile up the road from where we did coming home one night from work from the mines he said it a deer ran across the road and then this thing come across the road chasing it that's the only detail I got out of him was that he said apparently he seemed the same thing, chasing a deer. And he talked about how fast it's moving. Other than that, there's just stories I've heard after I started asking questions and researching. I've found a lot of similarities with the, in this area, the Bigfoot's people reporting seem to be the kind I, you know, physically the type that I've seen. We're outweighed. It seemed like they're 800 pounds or 8, 9, 10 foot tall built like bodybuilders. The lower part of this thing was built like a bodybuilder times 10, but the upper part was just real skinny, kind of hungry looking actually. But nothing threatening about it. It was just I was shocked. Right now, I don't even know how to describe how I felt other than my mouth was, I guess, wide open, and my mind was trying to process what I was looking at. The whole time, my eyes were just fixated on this thing being bipedal, and when it squatted, those muscles and its legs, I was just, man, just don't ever forget that. And it does, I think. But Brunahl, if I mention he talks about it, I don't think it affected him as much as it has me. Because to me, these things ain't real. They're not supposed to be real. But here I am looking at it. And left me hungry for answers that I've never have gotten. You start going down, I think, what they are, you're going down a rabbit hole that has a bottomless pit to it. That's my opinion. I don't know anybody really know what they are. Yeah, it does have a lot of curves. No doubt about that. Is Harlan County mostly forested or farmland? Man, I'm glad you asked that. People look down on mining, even surface mining. And most of my time from logging and surface mining, I even worked underground. I was working underground when I had this encounter. But I got out from underground and started logging, and then I worked surface mining. Didn't get on these mountains. and I live pretty close to the top of Black Mountain, which is the highest point in Kentucky. You get on that mountain, you look, and you won't see nothing but mountains. Go over to High Knob, but I don't know if anybody knows anything about High Knob, Virginia. There's been a lot of sightings there. You can look on again and see nothing. Look over toward the, I think that big valley goes up through there, over toward the Blue Ridge Mountains. It's just mountains after mountains after mountains. Starting a business can be overwhelming. You're juggling multiple roles, designer, marketer, logistics manager, all while bringing your vision to life. Shopify helps millions of business sell online. It's time to see what you can accomplish with Shopify by your side. The only thing we have here is these little hollows have coal camps in them. These coal mines by these big chunks of land up, and they build these houses for the workers. This is way back in the early 1900s. And the rest of it's mountains. You know, just a lot. I cannot explain how much wilderness is. It's just Pine Mountain, for example. It's never been touched. It's still the same as other than that little trail on top, Little Shepherd's Trail, and a house here and there on it. It's still remote, probably as it was back 200 years ago. So you got the big black mountain, then you got the little valley, which ain't much, a little road, a little flat, a little river runs through it, and you go right back up Pound Mountain. On the other side of it, just more mountains. Extremely a lot of wilderness. A lot of roadside cross-sidings. People say they've seen these things across the road. And, yes, there's plenty, plenty of wilderness here for anything to survive in. One more could they ask for? Exactly. Go for the Smoky Mountains on up, but you know how the Appalachian Mountains run, you know. What are they, over 1,000 miles long or better? And it's just a broad, just a huge area of mountains and forest. and I was kind of shocked at some of the sightings that just come from this county alone. And then I can't remember where I was reading that, but there's a lot of encounters coming from this, I guess I would say the southern part of Harlan County down toward Bell County, Path Fork, back in those areas. A lot of encounters coming out of that area too, which, you know, there's a lot of wilderness. There's just a lot of wilderness for these things to be in and travel through. So seeing them, you know, probably ain't going to happen often because there's so much places for them to be. But there's enough four-wheelers and hunters and people traveling back and forth at night through these mountains and these side roads that, yeah, road crossings are, they happen, you know, fairly often, I would say. And, of course, you know, you can get on and look at Pike County, Electro County, Perry County, Knott County. shoot, there's sightings everywhere you turn. People have had these sightings, so we're all seeing something, you know. Yes, sir, that you are. Think about how many sightings happen where people don't report them. So, yeah, they happen all the time. That's my generation. See, my dad was like, you know, he told me, I mean, he was really strict. I was 12 years old, and he started letting me go by myself with a shotgun. and he said, don't come back here tell no big hairy tail that you've seen something unless you got it tied to a rope to prove that you've seen it. He said, keep your mouth shut. I really often wonder what he meant by that. But he was raised back up in the head of a town called Lynch. Some people even refer to that still to Randall's Holler. And I think they settled in there in the 1920s when my dad was just a kid back there. And I think there's only ones at first. but when we go back here hunting to his old home place it's all wooded up nothing back there and there when I was a kid he would always he would take he had a .357 for instance and it would shoot .38 or the .357 he would take the .38 out put the .38s out put the .38s in if I had a shotgun he would take the cheap brass the short brass shell out tell me to put the long brass in before we even go in that hour and that's the only time and the only place he ever would do that. And I often wondered, I never asked, I often wondered if there was something back there that scared him at one time or if he'd seen something, they want to make sure he had plenty of extra firepower to protect himself. But I never asked that. To this day, I often wonder that. And that's another one of those areas that you can go in that will just make your hair stand up on your back. And you might not see nothing, you just get that, I don't know how to say it, just a dread, almost a just a real bad feeling. It just comes over you kind of quick. And that's just one area. And another area where I used to live, you go up in the hollow, just a thick, thick, rotoed in them thick. And you get in there and you're just just, I don't know, just a dark feeling come over you, sort of say it like that. But like I said, I can't say it's anything to do with Bigfoot because I've never seen nothing. But I had those feelings when I'm being in the forest. Now, in my Jeep, when I was driving, I mean, I guess I just rolled up on it. You know, I guess there wasn't time for that. But I still believe this thing really wanted me to see it, just the way it acted. Like, hey, look at me. Look what I can do. That's the feeling I got from it. I've heard people who know a lot about these things or seem to know a lot about them say that when a Sasquatch wants to cross a road, normally they're going to prefer doing that in a corner in a bin, just like what you reported. Right. But, and this was a bin and it's, um, they had a big mudslide there and then they widened that white spot out, but that white spot was only probably wide enough to, you know, get my Jeep over and, um, maybe a couple more extra feet, but just, It takes from the middle of that road to clear that wide spot. When I say clear it, he cleared it by a long ways. Okay, I would have no problem saying this thing could probably sit somewhere between the three-point line on a basketball court and the half court and take one leap and slam dunk a basketball. I don't think this thing would have no problem doing that after I've seen what it can do after that night on the road, the way it jumped. That would kind of put it in perspective. Just the power this thing had in its legs to jump like that. Wow. And when it did jump, you could see the hair flowing off of it. But that's what got me. The top part of it, the hair was long. There might have been like a dowel under it, maybe a light gray dowel, like fur is under it, and the longer reddish-tipped hair, about three to four inches long, hung off its arms and chest. Actually, that's what always threw me off. That little bit of light gray spots I've seen around the stomach. When they did the Patterson film, they cleared it up. You could see those same light gray spots on that thing. That's what it looked like. So I don't know. I don't know if that's an underdial or maybe it could have been the skin. I don't know. Now, before all this, going way back in the – My brother went to Vietnam in 60, each one of the Marines was 67. He's seen it. I'd have been five years old, maybe. My dad had a friend named Strell, and he owned a liquor store, and they'd become buddies, and they would love to get out. Strell liked to hunt for snakes. He'd catch them, keep them wild, turn them loose. He'd just like snakes. But one day, my mom got us to come outside. My dad and his buddy Strud pulled up and had about a 60-some model Chevrolet stepside truck. Me, my brother, I think my sister, a few of the neighborhood kids there too, he got them back to that truck, and they said they found a monkey dead. They pulled this thing out, had it by a rope hanging from its neck, and they got it down, and my dad tied it up. and this thing is probably about my size when I was five years old. I'll never forget that. We didn't know what it was. Never heard of Bigfoot or nothing. Mom said, there's some kind of monkey. Probably somebody's pet. You know, that's all we needed to hear. But looking back on it, well, we don't know if I had a pet monkey, but anyway, he found it. Him and Strale, they kept him for about two days. But I noticed looking at it, what I was fascinated about was, the shin part or the shin the shin bone is was I thought it was bone but it was actually just dark hide probably been dead for two days maybe but the eyes were big brown eyes there was no tail on it it was definitely like a a chimp I guess you could say but I still remember those feet real wide toward the toes narrowed at the heel I didn't notice at the time but as I got older I was seeing what monkeys monkeys have that exposing thumb way back under a foot over climbing trees. I don't remember seeing that. I remember seeing the toes up front just like a human's toes. This thing was probably I don't know how tall it had been at five, six years old. But it was about my height. Very small. It had the longer arms. And we all looked at it. I wish God we could have took pictures of it. But I think in them days didn't hardly have much of nothing. He certainly didn't have no camera. But what I found out happened was my dad and his buddy Strel, they took it down to Strel's liquor store showing it. And the manager, Strel had a guy who run the store for him. He told him, said, look, you folks need to get rid of that. This thing could, how do you say it? If they found out this thing could be somewhat human, y'all can get in trouble for, you know, bad trouble for having this thing. Y'all need to get rid of it. and what I found out was my dad and them, they took it up this place, Clover Lake, which isn't far from where I had my sight, and actually threw it out over the hillside somewhere. But those eyes, I mean, I can't say it wasn't a monkey. It could have been a jimp, but I don't think it was, but we'll never know, I don't guess. But that's just one of those things, you know, everybody wished you had a picture or wished you had a camera or, you know. But we didn't, but a bunch of us seen it. And a bunch of people in the liquor store seen it. And they all looked at it and gawked it. Nobody really knew what it was. They just called it a monkey. Starting a business can be overwhelming. It's time to see what you can accomplish with Shopify by your side. The term Bigfoot, I don't think, was even rearing in. You know, we talked about 67, no, 67, I'm pretty sure is when it was. But, you know, they claim they found it. I don't remember seeing no blood on it. But my dad never could have seen it and shot it. I don't think they did. But you never know. My dad's a pack shot for pistols or something like that. It was to run across the road on something. He could have probably easily shot it. What scares me is the idea of a Sasquatch sitting there in the woods watching when it was thrown over that hill. If it was a juvenile Sasquatch, that wouldn't be good. If it was, it was definitely juvenile. No. But, you know, even if it's a monkey, where would I even come from around here? And this was found very head of Lynch. I don't know if you know where Lynch is, but it's a U.S. Steel town. U.S. Steel built it back in the early 1900s. And they put the football field back and had this little hollow. And from there back was years ago, my dad was there. You know, him. And then later on, a couple other families moved back there. But they didn't live in the state. out on. They moved back down here to the camps. But back in there is where they claimed to have found it at. And like I said, they was probably back there just riding around drinking a beer looking for snakes. Go straight all over to catch rattlesnakes. And I guess they just stumbled up on this thing. Well, you make a good point. If it was a monkey, where'd it come from? Right. Right. But it didn't have a tail. You know, monkeys have tails. Apes don't. And I still remember the feet was clear. I mean, it was clear. there was not no thumb way back on that inside the foot in order of monkey, you know, how they have our apes have their exposing thumb, sits way back on their foot, you know. This thing, I'm pretty, I mean, I'm almost 100% sure it had to find. Well, I'm not going to say, but I know that foot didn't look like a regular monkey's foot. Well, that definitely narrows it down. Don know what else it could have been that very observant of you Yeah I mean it just one of those things you know I guess kids focus on You know me I thought I was looking at a bone and I thought that you know a pretty big thing you know a five kid But as I realized, it was just to play the hide or a hard drive off its chin, maybe, you know, decompose a little bit. The eyes were really big, and I think I've seen a video where someone said early stages of decomposing the eyes would have looked bigger, like on an animal or something, you know. but if it was decomposed it wasn't old, it couldn't be no more than two days old there was no smell to it or nothing like that and my dad hauled it in his truck for two days and showing everybody so I'm sure he started thinking he'd have got rid of it so who knows they may have took it down Strahls and threw it in a cooler for a day or two, I don't know and when I say Strahls, that's the name of the bar that Strahls you know, my dad's buddy owned, it was named after him Strahls but But I just often wonder. I'd like to know where you threw it out at. I'd have to go look and see if I could find maybe a skull or something. Yeah, maybe it's a good thing you didn't know where you threw it. Because, yeah, if you went back there, it might not go well for you. Yeah, well, these minor roads. Are you familiar with this area of southeastern Kentucky? No, sir. Okay. What do you have? You've got these seams of coal that go up and down this mountain. Most of the seams that they're after is called high span. It's up close to the top of the mountains. So about every one of these hollers have a road that takes you up, not all the way to the top, but way pretty close to the top of these mountains. They level off, and they've cut these big, long bench roads, miles and miles long. They follow the co-seams, and they drive in these co-seams and go beltline the coal back out. Back then, we had beltlines carried all the way down to the temple. Well, nowadays, they just truck it out because it's just, I guess, more feasible. I don't know. But this road they took up is on the old mining roads. It's just like where I lived, that was an old mining road. And it'd go up so far and then fork to the left and right. And it would go, gosh, it'd go miles. It'd go from Lynch to Oliver and Cumberland and in and out of these halls and stuff, all on them coast seams. and it just goes for miles and there's not many places you're going to go and not be too far from some sort of mining road. And both sides of these mining roads are just wilderness. You know, like I said, houses down in the hollows, then when they start up these hills, it's just wilderness from there up. And I think people see, I think there's more Bigfoot sightings than there are Black Panther sightings. I would love to see a Black Panther. I never have, but I would love to see one I like to think I'd have enough fortitude about me to shoot it. If I did see it, I'd like to kill one of my boss, actually. We had an encounter on our job. He's seen one. The guy before him seen it, and he's seen it. He jumped off high wall, landed in front of him. It scared him so bad. He tried to run back to his truck and fail. He thought for sure it would jump on him, but he said he looked back. He was just looking at him, and it went down over the hill, and he said, Bo, he said, that thing was huge. is that real thick across the chest there. And, you know, like I said, I talk to people who've seen them, but I've never seen one. And, you know, they say Black Panthers are jaguars, and black jaguars are kind of rare. If that's so, then how come we don't ever see the regular jaguars or the yellow mountain lions? We're starting to get the mountain lions here now a little bit, but the Black Panthers have been here for hundreds of years. My grandpa has talked about them. he'd be 130 some years old now my dad would be 103 he's talked about them hearing them and talked about his buddies seeing them like me I've had several people I know that's seen them but I've never seen you know a black cat I think like I said I hear about seems to be about as many if not more Bigfoot sightings than there are black cat sightings kind of goes hand in hand I said it's about even so just cause I haven't seen one doesn't mean they're not there. Everybody else is seeing them. That's a good point. How many times have you heard an old boy say, well, I've never seen a Sasquatch, so they can't be out there. But, yeah, that doesn't mean anything like you just said. Right. Right. You know, these guys, I understand Bigfoot. Oh, there ain't no such thing. I didn't see it. Well, I did. You know, you seen a black cat, I seen a Bigfoot. You know, I mean, you can't... I know some people see a bear or anything moving through the woods, you know, and you really can't tell what it is. Some people holler Bigfoot or this or that. I won't do that. If I didn't know 110% sure what I was looking at, I would never say the word about it. And, you know, what, we're talking 40 years ago, 41 years, something like that ago, and I can still remember it. It happened yesterday. it's been with me all this time so and people have these experiences they say the same thing you know they just don't forget about it they burn it it just burns the image in your mind and i couldn't imagine some people having these terrifying encounters where these things try to attack them or chase them out of woods or uh fake bluff you know charge fake charge you know i heard people saying they'll charge in and they'll stop you know i can't imagine having one of those kind experiences but like I said mine was not threatening at all it was a very you know a relaxed experience I mean there's no no threats about it it wasn't threatening I ain't seen that menace about it at all nothing to scare me of it anyway you know it's just there's something in our world it's not supposed to exist but now I'm sitting here looking at it so and it leaves you shocked that's the thing like I said I had a gun I wasn't going to shot it in any way but you know if I really I had a gun there I could have easily done it very close 20 feet 15, 20, 25 feet the furthest but you know you don't think of that you know even today if people have a cell phone they're not going to think, get your cell phone out and try to record it. Because your mind is just not, your mind just goes into reasoning, trying to reason what you're looking at. And your eyes are just watching it all happen. You just kind of freeze up as far as your mind just goes into total, trying to rationalize what you're looking at. And it just leaves you with a lot more questions than answers. I often wonder, you know, a lot of times I kind of wish I hadn't ever seen it, to be honest with you. Well, it's easy to get obsessed looking for one of these things if you don't get control over it. I know a lot of people just wholeheartedly just dedicate every minute of their day looking for them, spending tons of money looking for them. If you're going to find one, I believe your best chance to find one is just go out camping. get up get there early get a fire going put a little food on the fire and just sit around and maybe one of these things will come in until you count i think it's your chances of that are just as good as out here looking for them starting a business can be overwhelming you're juggling multiple roles designer marketer logistics manager all while bringing your vision to life shopify helps millions of business sell online build fast with templates and ai descriptions and photos, inventory, and shipping. Sign up for your one euro per month trial and start selling today at Shopify.nl. That's Shopify.nl. It's time to see what you can accomplish with Shopify by your side. Why do you almost wish you had never had that sighting? Because I think about it too much. That's a tough way to answer. okay if i learned to just kind of put it off the thoughts of it um i can get obsessed with looking for it really and i don't want to i've read enough and looked at this thing enough this subject and read enough reports talked enough people there's just something about these things that we're not ever going to prove them. I don't care what people think. I don't really know if they're 100% human or have special qualities about them that they can just seem to disappear in thin air, you know, red hot. I just don't think we're ever, no one's ever going to really capture one or kill one. And I think if you spend all your time looking for these things, you're just going to be let down and you're going to spend tons of money. Maybe cause family problems, spending too much time out looking for them. I just don't. I personally could go down that route about half a time or two, but I just wish I could focus my time on more other things now. I've seen what I've seen. I know they're there. I don't need. I used to feel the need to prove it to people. Now I don't. I just am satisfied with what I've seen. And I ain't saying I wouldn't want to see another one, but at the same time, if I never see another one, that's fine, too. And it's also the mystery of it. Sometimes I think it's good to have some sort of mystery that we can't solve. You know, just to remind us, hey, you know, there's more to life than just working every day. There's things out there to discover still yet. Well, there's so much out there to discover. Yeah, no doubt about that. When you got out of your Jeep that night to look for him, did you smell anything strange? No, never smelled nothing. I could just hear it down in the creek. I didn't even think to get my miners light out. You know, our mining cap lights, they're very strong. I've thrown some of these LED lights today, but they're still very strong. I didn't even think to get that out. It was pretty, well, I don't know if it was a full moon or not, but it was pretty bright out still. but I could see down in there somewhat, but I couldn't see it. I couldn't see no movement. I ain't going to lie to you, but I was standing out there. The thought went through my mind was, that thing jumped like that. It could easily jump back up here real quick. That did cross my mind, but I could hear it. I could hear it like a – if you're ever in a creek, step onto a thin, flat rock, it makes a unique flop sound to it. I heard that, and I heard some twigs now, I knew it was already down to the creek line by then. That's probably 75 yards down in the hill. I wasn't going to see him. I wasn't going to see him. Once I heard him, I knew where he was at. It got quiet when I started thinking. This thing jumped right back up here. I'm in this Jeep with an old cloth top on it. Like I said, I wasn't scared, but I thought it did cross my mind. My brother didn't get out. I don't think it bothered him like it did me for some reason. I don't know. But there's one of those brief moments in life that something just strange happens and changes the way you see things the rest of your life. You know, when you have these sightings, you may have, people have things, I've read a lot of people like this that's had a sighting of one of these, and then they say, you know, after I started researching it, missing other people's experience i remember this happening when i was younger i remember one time i was hunting and you know i had a rock through at me you know we had after this happened to me we had uh some experiences one year camping me and my buddy was about 14 and uh i kept hearing we drank we had our beer head and stuff away from our mom and dad's a little bit and wait until we get a little bit later start drinking and i had my dog i had a dog that Loved the fight. He was a gentle dog around people, but he loved to fight other dogs. And he was scared of nothing. He went wherever I went. We were camping one night, and my dog started pacing. It was a little flat spot, and it turned straight uphill. It was actually an old top lot that had been tore out. And there was no houses beyond that, but the last house was below us a little bit. And I thought I heard something. my buddies, they was just hoohaing going on. I got on the quieting down. I said, y'all be quiet. And a dog was sniffing. He come over and laid down beside me looking up on that hill. And I could see his nostrils flaring. I could hear this moan, real low. He did it on one breath. A moan, a groan, and a growl. And it was real low. And I don't know how we could hear it without seeing it. because it was a little clear spot, but it was up on the hill, maybe a little bit toward the creek side to the right. I can't really pinpoint where it's coming from. My buddy started hearing it. It did it again. And my dog got up, beeline to the house, took off. That's the first time my dog was ever, ever left us camping. Well, we didn't make nothing of it much. I don't know. The next nine or two, we camped out there again. And one of my friends had a date. He's going to come up a little bit late. He comes up. A little hill dropped down to get where he was camping at. There's a flat and drops down to the hill. And that's where the blacktop actually ends right there and turns into a mining road, which is Red Dog. What they put on mining roads back then. Similar to gravel, but it's all company property. And it's all wilderness from there up. Had a creek around the side. And a little bridge crossed over to the mining road. It turned into like a Red Dog road. people don't know what that is it's it's a byproduct of coal burnt coal and it makes a good road bed well his name was yule and uh by the time we didn't get there i told i told bobby and red mother buddy and james i said y'all be quiet a minute i said i hear yule well you hear like a mumbling jumbling noise i said that's what's wrong with yule he went down there he's almost in shock. About this time, I hear something in the creek. We get him up there, calming down. He said there was something on that bridge standing looking at him. He said when it seen him, it turned and jumped in the creek and said a big white patch on its back. He said it was standing there. I said, what do you mean standing? He said, standing there like a person. I said, really? I heard something in the creek. I didn't go look over in the creek. I did hear something, but because at the time he said he'd seen it and heard it, you know, seen it jump. It scared him so bad, but I never got him calmed down. And, you know, his fires, what he's seen was something standing on that bridge. And if he jumped off that bridge, it probably wasn't an eight-foot drop. Or if he jumped off on the bank, it would be less than that. So, you know, I didn't see it, but he did, and it really tore him up. It really scared him. It took forever to calm him down. Um, so apparently this thing had been run to us maybe a time or two while I was camping, but it never bothered us other than that one night I heard it. You know, that ground groan sound I was telling you about when my dog took off. But, and, um, you know, we was 14 year old boys. We was more thinking about drinking and girls while we talked about, you know, in cars. So he wasn't out looking for nothing like that. so but he hit short it tore him up I actually remember that scaring him shook him up real bad so now I look back thinking well maybe he could have been one of these things that I've seen you know and given where we've seen it at where I've seen it at it really isn't far at all skipping a hop through the woods if you get up on these ridges and travel these ridges you can cover a lot of ground fast I don need to tell you this You already know When you see something like one of these guys out there in the woods it changes them for you It really does It does It does. I don't know if I'd ever kill one. There's a time I probably would have just to prove, you know, the need to prove to people. A few people didn't blame me or, you know, they just, I can tell they didn't blame me, you know. I never really got made fun of. actually a few times I brought it up. Sometimes they'll talk, oh, you must've been drinking or you, why are you smoking? And then they say, well, you know, I know a buddy or I had an uncle or I had a brother or I had a cousin, had experience like that. And that's how you find out, you know, there's a lot of people saying these things. So someone really accused me a little bit about it. I don't care because usually eventually I get a story out of them. They know somebody or they may even confess to seeing something. you know my dad i don't think he ever did believe me uh which i don't care you know and maybe he did he never questioned me about it because he didn't believe in those things which i ain't saying he didn't believe in them because there's something definitely back in his hollow that he used to live in that he always took extra precaution to have some extra firepower when he went in the aisle and then they found what they found you know what him and his buddy Strail. So maybe he did. He just never really questioned me about it. Starting a business can be overwhelming. You're juggling multiple roles, designer, marketer, logistics manager, all while bringing your vision to life. Shopify helps millions of business sell online. Build fast with templates and AI descriptions and photos, inventory and shipping. Sign up for your one euro per month trial and start selling today at shopify.nl. That's shopify.nl It's time to see what you can accomplish with Shopify by your side I know he told a story about his dad and being my great-grandpa and his cousin which they had uncle took on coon hunt and got on something they tracked forever and when they got the dogs got quiet when they got to where they should have found it their dogs were cut out of pieces and they said you know there wasn't no bears in him. They said even if it was a bear, it would have treed it. I think what they thought, these dogs trailed this thing about seven right miles in a straight line and their thing went quiet and they found their dogs there tore off. One actually was killed. The dogs was hunkered up, whining, and cut all the pieces. They called it a panther, you know. That's what they said. The uncle told us, it must have been a big panther guy to hold of them. You know, who knows? Could have been. Could have been one of them things. you just don't know. And that being back, what, 1900, 1890-something, 1905, somewhere on in there. I mean, that apparently happened. So those, these have been strange things. Oh, Lord, it just goes by the way back to whoever gets the first person ever living in these mountains probably had strange encounters. That place in my house was just a really, they are some of the oldest mountain ranges if not the oldest. And there's some places, like I said, you can go into and you can just feel something real heavy dread or almost evil presence will just come over you. I've experienced that several times. I've pressed through that before, but you know, just out of nowhere, it just hits you out of nowhere. But you're seeing these big dark thick hollers full of rhododendron and you know what rhododendron is you get some of them 8-10 foot tall and you you have to get on your belly and crawl through that stuff and but you know you just you can encounter some strangers in these mountains for sure who knows what else is out there in those mountains we know about Sasquatch and I'm convinced that there are dogmen out there as well, but if they're there, what else is out there? So, it really does make you wonder. Right. And I didn't believe in dogmen. Just like here lately, I saw I've seen a lot of dogmen encounters. I didn't believe in that, and I started looking at reading some stories and encounters people have, and I found a common trait with dogmen encounters versus Bigfoot encounters. Dogmen, a lot of them, they come right into neighborhoods at night. they're more aggressive. They'll, they'll trail you. I don't know this, but the reports and stuff I've read is the, oh, even smile at you. I even read about a fisherman having a fight with one in Tennessee and the thing took his fish. And after he got in a fight and it whipped him after he took, he turned around and smiled at him and walked off with his fish. I've read some crazy reports on these things. So I'm starting to think, Hey, you know, up to the last 10 years I never heard a dog man but now I'm hearing a lot of it so you know go down that rabbit hole where they come from are they something genetically made in a government science lab somewhere and they turn them loose or where do they come from Bigfoots you know they go back Indians and early settlers they go back hundreds of years but seeing off the dog man to something more recently. And those encounters are very, very frightening from what I read, you know. That they are. Yeah, the first documented Dogman sighting was 1887 in Wexford County, Michigan. So, yeah, they go way back to you. Right. I remember that encounter. I remember when it aired on TV and I thought, well, there'll be a lot of people coming out and saying they're seeing Dogman now. And they are. And I thought, okay. But then I started reading the report. I said, well, there's a lot of, you know, every sighting has a lot of common trait to it that Bigfoot's not known to do. You know, you don't see, I've heard one dogman walking down a sidewalk and two girls on the other sidewalk walking up opposite direction, looked down at her cell phone and never seen it. And another guy is watching the dogman walk down the road and cuts between the house and hits a little patch of woods and he lost it. you know so that's something you don't ever you never hear a bigfoot walking down a sidewalk or smiling at people and these are just you know i'm thinking okay maybe they are something these dogmen i mean who am i to say there ain't when i've sitting here and i'm one saying i've seen that bigfoot so just because i ain't seen one doesn't mean they're not out there i don't know how i've ever act but i usually carry 10 millimeter with me if i've seen one and it threatened me like I had some of these people. I guess I hope they have enough about me to put a bullet in its brain. I may just go in shock like I did when I seen Bigfoot and not be able to move a muscle just sitting there looking at it. I hope you never tried to do that. Yeah. Like I said, I don't know. I wouldn't see the Bigfoot, but he's a dog man. what I read about them. If I had enough self-control over me and I had a my dear Ralph wore my pistol, I would definitely, I think I would take the shot. I'd like to think I would. I might not, but I would like to think I would. You know, we don't know what we'll do to ruin that situation. That's true. And it sure does seem like these things like dogmen don't die easy. Just like with Sasquatch, they don't seem to die easy, so. No. Hope it never comes down to that. right you know i believe i'll i guess report for people's claim to kill them um but you know who knows i mean they claim government they shoot only disappear or they've killed them and the government come took the bodies we don't know you know i guess what happens to us we'll never know but actually i've read bigfoot reports back in 1800s um but so dog man i i just started really last 10 years reading those reports seem to be coming in quite often but the uh i can tell you you know don't get me wrong i'm in the woods i'm looking you know i look for tracks i look for signs uh you know i i'd like to find some proof uh hair or i'd like to find a body and whatever it was my dad found that time would be awesome we could have took pictures of that but you know we didn't but i you know i'm always looking even my deer hunting turkey hunting or just out in the woods that thoughts in the back of my mind you know i know what's in these woods or can be in these woods i don't know if it's there now or not i think they travel moving around a lot but the chances of running into one's good as anybody's view if you're in the woods you know and that's the thing i was working in the mans when i had this encounter and after that i started my own logging business and i've i've been in the woods six days a week 10 12 hours a day all around 100 mile radius thing probably not a place i haven't been looking at timber or even logging in area i've never had another encounter that's the odd thing about it there's this one night at perfect timing this thing was there and i happened to come by and our paths crossed you know so anybody's able you know apt to see one if you're out riding down any road you'd never know That's one of the funny things about these guys There really is no rhyme No reason to when you might have a sighting So you never really do know You really don't Did the one that you saw in 83 Look like it was defying gravity Due to the way it sailed through the air When it made that big jump Or did it fly through the air In the way you'd expect it to If it didn't defy gravity Okay When it raised up And it took that step back that had to be one heck of a step because i mean when he took that step he was beside this road and he's right in the middle of the road all in one step that i'm kind of you know that's all how do you do that's quick i mean it's just so quick and so flunt how he did it and when he's standing there and you know trying to keep this clean as possible but the buttocks i mean it was round i mean round round and the waist was extremely skinny but from the waist down from the buttocks down the thing was huge the leg muscles and buttock muscles was huge um and the arms were long and skinny um the hair on the chest was long like i said like a reddish tint to it and the forearm hair was long hair on the stomach had that patches like a light gray in it. You know, it could have been dial. I don't know. But then the leg fur was darker and shorter. Like I said, on a boxer or a Doberman pincher or something, real short tight hair that really showed the definition of the muscles. And the head was small. But when that thing squatted down and looked at me again, those leg muscles, like they just exploded. I've never seen, oh, man. I'm 6'2". I played a lot of football, worked in the mines. I was a strong guy myself. And you look at these bodybuilders and stuff, they don't even compare. The leg muscles don't even compare to this thing. I just cannot stress the power in the legs of this thing. Starting a business can be overwhelming. It's time to see what you can accomplish with Shopify by your side. It was so... That's the word I'm looking for. Well, the lower half is just so much larger. it did not really match up with the upper half i mean up has lean and skinny skinny arms skinny stomach just just real real lean you know it did have the wide shoulders but the leg muscles just the size of those legs was just huge i just can't explain it i mean they were huge and and the difference in the fur on the legs and the fur on the upper body was totally different but a guy i was telling you before i said you know told me that he this guy and his family went out for a ride and seen one of these things in a garbage dump. The animal he described sounds like, he said the same thing. It's real skinny, but the legs are huge. Could have been the same animal. Or it could be their genetics in this area. I don't know. But his description of what he's seen fits exactly my description of what I've seen. And I'll never forget those leg muscles. Never. Sure sounds like that old boy made an impression on you. and I understand why. Oh, yeah. Yeah. And when he jumped, he was asking about that. If you've seen the leg muscles and that thing, the distance that it jumped wouldn't surprise you because when it jumped, everything was natural about it. I mean, you could see the fur and stuff flowing and he got down in that position, got like a mark, like a runner, get ready to run. He got down, he squatted, he had his arm down, had the forearm sticking out by his knee and that's when I got to go look at the hand area and he looked at me one more time. He looked one more time at me, then he made that jump. Man, he gone. He made that jump. He was gone. He stayed balled up. He didn't stretch out. He kind of stayed balled up. I guess he stretched out when he got over the hill, but he jumped, and it's like he you know, you'd think he would have to stretch out to jump, but he jumped from that position. I can still see him as my man right now. He was clearing that berm over that bank. He was still balled up. when I first seen that dark shape, that I thought maybe somebody set a deep freezer out or something, I couldn't, my mind couldn't think of any appliance big enough. This thing was huge. When it was on down on all fours, I guess going through that bag of garbage. That's when it really, this thing was big. And we stood up. I said seven foot, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was eight foot. Back then, I wasn't a good judgment of half, but the more I think about it, I'll be sitting in my living room looking at my eight-foot ceiling as I'm thinking, oh, that thing's head probably touched my ceiling. You know, I mean, things like that, I always think about it. So, he left an impression on me. Oh, I'm sure he did, and I understand why.
