Summary

In this Second Date Update segment, Tobias, a high school history teacher, was ghosted by Elara after what he thought was an excellent first date at a wine bar in Hayes Valley. When Marcus calls Elara on air, she reveals she saw a text from Tobias's mom asking if he'd told her about his dog, contradicting his claim of being too busy for pets. Tobias explains the dog lives with his ex-girlfriend, but Elara feels he intentionally omitted important life details, making her question his honesty on the first date.

Insights
  • Omission of significant personal information early in dating can damage trust more than the information itself, especially when discovered accidentally

It's Marcus in the morning, back with second date update. Tobias is on the phone and just to give a little background, he got ghosted by his date. Her name is Alara, very unique name. Tobias, are you there? Yeah, I'm here. So let's talk about the date really quick. I understand it was pretty gangbusters. First of all, what did you guys do? We went to a wine bar in Hayes Valley. Okay. We had gotten matched on Bumble. And then, so how did, hold on a minute, I'm trying to ask here, was she hot? She was hot, yes. Okay. Yes, she was. And I, well, yeah, I thought that it went really, really well. I thought she was really, I don't know, she's like a little bit sarcastic. She's a really creative person. She's, she does interior staging. I don't know whether, you know, like showing houses. I was going to say for like, for like real estate? Right. Yeah. Yeah. But I don't know. We talked a lot about that and just like what all she brings to that. And yeah, I don't know. She asked a lot of thoughtful questions about me. Yeah. What do you do? The conversation just felt really good. It was really, it felt, it felt better than most first date, you know, small talk. So what do you do? I'm a history teacher. I teach history in high school. Oh. Do you, do you have a favorite time period? Like I had a boss who was like big World War II guy. Taylor's brother is all about ancient Roman history. Do you have a thing? Yeah, I, yeah, no, I, I'm probably medieval in Europe, but I actually teach a Civil War American history mostly. Okay. But in your off time, it's a whole different. In my off time, I'm a, I'm a, amateur medievalist. Yeah. Basically game of thrones. Okay. I wish. Yeah. I wish it were that thrilling. Yeah. So, so just to clarify, she did ghost. Like how did it end? Yeah. So we, yeah. So, you know, I guess I thought that the day went really, really well. And, you know, we were even like talking about places we might want to travel to, like speaking of like Europe stuff. We were talking about some stuff like that. And, and then once, you know, we were there until the bar closed and we walked a couple blocks together. And there was definitely a moment where we were kind of lingering near each other. And it seemed like neither of us wanted to leave and we hugged and we kissed, you know, just, it was a small kiss, but we kissed. And she said that she had a really good time. And, and then I texted her the next morning and I got nothing. And then the followed up since then, just, you know, little light comments and nothing. So I think, I think I can officially say ghosted. How do I ask this lightly? You didn't, you didn't hit her with too much history, did you? Like you didn't go down a, down a black play rabbit hole or the crusades or? It's a good, it's a good question. I, I don't think so, but it is, it is hard for me to tell sometimes. So I hope not. All right. This might be a quick phone call, we'll see. You sound like a good dude. So I want to try to figure this out. Thank you. I'll tell you what, we're going to call her. You're going to be muted, but you will be able to hear everything that she says and we'll see if we can get you a second date at least. Okay? Okay. Thank you. Well, let's call her and try to figure some things out, try to figure out why she ghosted. Go ahead and mute your phone. Here we go. Hello. Hi. Is this Alara? This is you. Good morning. This is Marcus calling from star one on three from the morning show. Oh, okay. Hi. Good morning. I'm fine. Do you, do you listen to the morning? God, I feel like I just woke you up. I'm so sorry. I don't listen. I'm so sorry. I feel like a jerk. No, it's fine. Maybe I should. No, you know, no, it's fine. Do you have a second to be on the show though? Be on the radio with us. Am I on the radio right now? Technically. Yes. You know, I don't know how it works, but. Okay. So, so we do a segment on our show called second date update. And I understand that you have been on a date with someone and they're kind of feeling ghosted. So, they sent me your phone number. So, if I could call and figure out frankly where they screwed up. And so, I would love to ask you about your date with Tobias. And before you say anything, I need to know, did he nerd out too hard? Like, did you fall asleep with your eyes open while he was talking about medieval history or something? No, no, actually I didn't. I don't. Okay. I, yeah, there's no weird bar behavior, nothing like that. Did you go? Yeah. Okay. And it made me not want to. All right. Well, acceptance is the first step. So, what happened? Did he do something wrong? How was the date for you? Let's start there. The date was good. I thought it was a really solid first date. Like I said, there was nothing wrong with it. But then I saw something at the end of the night and it just sort of changed my opinion about who he was. Can't wait. Okay. So, we were walking up to the date. He pulled up his phone to show me something and then while he was scrolling, I saw this notification on the screen. The contact was from his mom. Okay. A message. It just said, did you tell her about the dog yet? From his mom. From his mom, yeah. And I didn't say anything when I saw it because I just thought, I don't know. Look, it stuck with me immediately as being very odd. And I just remember thinking like what dog? Because look, he had spent the whole, he had spent that whole chunk of the night telling me about how he loves animals, but he's just so busy he doesn't have time for a pet right now. And then he's getting a text from his mom that is implying intentionally he might have decided to lie to me about something about that. So, it just set up my antenna, you know? Sure. So, then what happened? Because he like, he told me that he like texted you and then nothing. So, you see. Yeah. Look, so, I saw the text. I instead of responding right away, I kind of waited. And then the more I waited, the more I bothered. I realized I was and then I just kind of, I decided not to engage. Sure. Okay. Well, the other half of this is that, frankly, if I'm being honest is that Tobias is listening right now because we're just trying to figure out where he messed up. Okay. Tobias, are you there? Yeah, I'm here. Tobias, Laura, Laura, Tobias. Tobias, do you have a dog? Yeah, I do. I do. I thought you were too busy to have a dog. The situation is that my dog, he's a Huskies, three years old. His name is Ranger, but he lives right now. He lives full time with my ex, with my ex-girlfriend. And when we broke up, I mean, you know, we broke up about a year ago, but we just agreed that it was better for the dog to stay with her because she has more space in a yard. But I, yeah, the dog is still, you know, I still spend time over there with the dog. And yeah, my mom is very attached to it. And she asks, she asks about the dog a lot. And I guess I just, I didn't want to bring it up on a first date because the sentence, my dog lives with my ex, it just feels more complicated than I wanted to get it to when I was first meeting someone. And so that's, that's the explanation. Okay. Alara, how are we feeling? That's a problem for me. It's not, it's not really about the dog, but it's about the fact that he made a very intentional decision that he wasn't going to talk about something that's clearly very important in his life. And then it accidentally pops up. It just feels like he's managing this narrative and he's not being upfront with me. And I caught him in the lie, even if it's a small one, like it happened and it happened on the first date. So for me, I just don't think I'm going to come back from that. This seems like a recurring theme this week. Yeah, I understand where you're coming from. I mean, it seems to me like it wasn't really anything very serious. I just wasn't, just wasn't trying to over complicate a first impression. Yeah, but if you have all these things, you can tell me that you're hiding, you're already already complicated. Yeah. Okay. So no second date. Alara, we want to give him another shot. All right, fair enough. Hang on. Omitted information feels like a theme this week. Second date update.
