Summary

Arthur discusses his experience becoming a big brother when his baby sister Kate was born. The episode explores children's anxieties about new siblings, how older siblings can help care for babies, and Arthur's journey from skepticism to bonding with Kate.

Insights
  • Children often have misconceptions about babies based on peer feedback rather than direct experience, leading to unnecessary anxiety
  • Hands-on preparation and education (like swaddling practice) can help older siblings feel more confident and ready
  • Babies cry as a form of communication, not necessarily a sign of dislike; understanding this reduces sibling frustration
  • Older siblings play a meaningful developmental role in caring for and teaching younger siblings
  • Initial resistance to a new sibling can transform into genuine affection through positive early interactions

From your friends at PBS Kids! Music Arthur here with another episode of The Arthur Podcast. And this time we're talking about sisters. I have two little sisters. I have the most adorable baby sister named Kate. Say hi Kate! That's hello in baby. And then I have DW. She's...well...um...hmm. Well you've met her, she's DW. But Kate is so cute when she kicks her feet really fast. And I can make her laugh too. Babadoodoo dookie. See, some of you have baby sisters and brothers too. So I'm checking my inbox to hear what you have to say about them. When my sister was a baby, she got all the attention. My sister was a baby. I really liked to hold her and it was really weird because she was drooling a lot. Really disgusting. My baby sister's name is Rooney and she's five years old right now. But now we play with each other and now we're good friends. Today is actually Kate's birthday. She's turning one. She's always been so cute. You didn't always think that? Yes I did. Podcast people. Arthur didn't even like Kate when she was born. I did too. Uh-uh. I remember exactly what happened. Let me tell this story. I remember everything about Kate. Director DW is telling this story. Action! No, DW, don't grab the mic. It all started one morning. As usual, Arthur was hogging all the grapes. Let go of the grapes, DW. No, you let go. You already had more than me. I need them more than you. You're only bigger than me because you're full of so much food. Whoa! It's raining grapes. Now they're all over the floor, DW. You just have to rinse them. Mmm, delicious. The world would be a better place if there were no little sisters in it. Hey kids, we have a surprise for you. Is it a new bicycle? No. Is Arthur moving out? Uh, no. What is it? We're going to have a baby. A baby! A baby? A baby, baby, baby, baby, baby! It'll be about six months before the baby comes. Plenty of time to get ready. Cut! And that was important because Arthur really wasn't ready. DW! What? It's true. Mom taught me everything. How to hold a bottle, which toys were good. You didn't want to do any of that. Well, I'd heard bad stuff about babies. My friends had told me a lot. Well, Arthur, you better buy some earplugs. Babies never stop crying. Never, Binky? They cry through dinner? They cry over your favorite TV show? They cry when you're doing your homework? They cry louder than a fire truck? And when you want to sleep? You can forget about sleeping. Yeah, Arthur. Binky is right. In a few months, you'll be changing all those dirty diapers. Pay you! You bet I'm right. And Muffy is right about their stinky diapers. They smell worse than trash trucks in the summer. Just put a hockey mask on to block the smell and hope for the best. Really? A hockey mask? Buster, do you think it'll be that bad? Well, maybe you can teach your baby to do something useful. Like earn money for you. Your baby could do circus tricks and you could sell tickets. Presenting the amazing Reed Baby! She walks up tightrope, teams ferocious lions, and she can even juggle three pianos. Ha ha! People would pay a lot of money to see a baby juggle pianos. And then you could sit back and read comic books. Ah, that would be the life. Yeah, don't count on it. That's not how I went with my baby sister. Yeah, Binky is probably right, Arthur. Pretty soon you can forget about playing after school. You'll have to babysit. And you start talking baby talk all the time. Mr. Rappon, I went Betty-by and didn't do my home workie. Or Mr. Rappon, I got ouchy ouchy bubble paper cut. And what if your mom has more than one baby? She could have twins or triplets. Oh, bro, you can say that again three times. Ha ha ha ha! Cut! You should have listened to me, Arthur. I knew Kate was going to be awesome. Really? Cause you wanted to name her Mumu like Mary Mukau. You wanted to name her Bionic Bunny. It's a great name. It would have worked for a girl or a boy. My boy name was Prince Unicorn. You know what? Maybe it's better that mom and dad named her. Yeah, mom and dad know a lot about babies. Remember when they showed us those videos? Oh yeah! All the videos of when we were babies! Come here everyone! Look what showed up as a memory on my phone today! Is that me? Yup! You loved that stuffed pig! The snorts made you giggle! Play video of me! Okay! Let's see! Oh, play that one! Oh yeah! Say hi, DW! Hi! Hi! Haha! Bless you, DW! Don't I look adorable? I bet they knew babies going to be just like me! That's what I'm afraid of. Wow! Did DW cry all the time? Babies cry because they have something to say. I think she was saying she did not like that big sneeze. Oh look at this one, you too! This was right after we brought DW home from the hospital. That's not the alphabet, Arthur! Were you trying to trick me? No, he was trying to teach you. He just didn't know how yet, but he gave it a try. Big brothers and sisters can do a lot for the baby. Teach me everything! I want to do everything for the baby! Okay! I can teach you both how to swaddle a baby. Yes! Here! Use my earth bunny! No! Not my earth bunny! Stop making everything a baby, DW! It's alright! Here, DW! You can use Mary Moocow and Arthur, you can use Bionic Bunny. No, that's okay. I don't want to right now. Just show me, Mom! I want to know how to waddle! DW! Baby Kate was on her way and I was ready! And then one morning, we woke up to find Grandma Thor in the kitchen instead of our parents. Who wants blueberry pancakes? Grandma Thorah! You're in the wrong house! Where are Mom and Dad, Grandma? They're at the hospital. They went in the middle of the night. And you have a new baby sister! A sister! My sister! She'll be just like me! Oh, brother! Oh, sister! Yay! Sister, sister, sister, sister! Your new baby sister is named Kate. Here's a picture your mom texted me. Aww! She's so cute! And everyone will be home tomorrow morning. Yay! My baby! Sister, sister, sister! Oh, brother. Grandma Thorah, it's tomorrow morning! Where are they? I've been waiting forever! Why aren't Mom and Dad here yet with my baby? They'll be here any minute, D.W. In fact, wait! Isn't that their car pulling in? They're here! She's here, she's here! They're coming in! My sister is here! Hi, everyone! Welcome home, you three! We've got someone for you to meet. Here she is. Arthur and D.W. meet Kate. Arthur, do you want to hold her? Um, sure. Aww! Isn't she wonderful? She's kind of cute. Arthur, you made her cry! Here, Mom, let me hold her! I know everything about babies! Hey, Pinky! There's Arthur! Arthur, we heard your baby came! Yep, baby Kate. But I think she hates me. Why do you think she hates you? Well, every time I go near her, she cries. When I try to hold her, when she's in her crib, when I try to talk to her, she cries. She's a baby! Baby's cry! I tried to tell you! Can we come over after school to meet baby Kate? And maybe we can play football after. Okay, see you then! Arthur, could you watch Kate while I go upstairs? She's in her bouncy chair. Mom, are you sure? Of course I'm sure! Um, hi Kate! Here, you dropped your riddle. Arthur, was that on the floor? It has to be stabilized! Don't worry, I will take care of everything. I'll get it! Hi Buster, hi Pinky. Hi DW, is Arthur here? Yes, but he's babysitting, so he can't play. Would you like to come in and see my baby? That's why we're here, your baby? Don't get too close, because you have germs. Hey Arthur, yep, that's a baby. And hey, it's not crying. Aww, she's cute Arthur! She looks kinda like your baby pictures. Yeah, well, uh, here she is. Ah, now she's crying! That's what I expected. Everyone, stand back! I know what she wants! I am picking up the baby! Um, follow! No? Uh, she's not crying. Jingle clown! Not that! Um, everyone, remain calm! Aren't you going to help Arthur? No, I'll only make it worse. I know exactly what you do! Kisses! He does not want kisses, people! Arthur, you hold her while I get a clean diaper. Come on! You have to take her, Arthur! Okay DW, I got her! I'm holding her! Hi baby cake! A boogie boogie boogie boogie boogie! I wonder what she's trying to tell us. Come on cake, don't cry. Would it help if I padded your back? What happened? What's happening? Why isn't she crying? Arthur burped the baby right when she was about to explode. Oh, gross! Mother baby is spitting on him! No, she's not! She's kissing him! That was the story of how Kate became my baby! And our little sister! You didn't hate me, did you, Kate? Aw, happy birthday, Kate! Time for Kate's birthday cake, everyone! Bye, podcast people! Ends the podcast, Arthur! We have to get at Viv on Kate! And she needs to be in her hide chair! Cut! The end! You've been listening to the Arthur podcast. Hey parents, do you want your kids to answer my next inbox question?
