Summary

Chris Hayes examines Trump's erratic behavior and dangerous foreign policy decisions, including his blasphemous Jesus image, feud with Pope Leo, and failed Iran negotiations led by JD Vance. The episode also covers congressional resignations following sexual assault allegations against Democratic members and celebrates Hungary's electoral rejection of Viktor Orbán's authoritarian model.

Insights
  • Trump's increasingly unhinged behavior is creating a crisis of credibility in foreign policy, with allies actively planning workarounds to his decisions on critical issues like the Strait of Hormuz
  • The DoorDash tip tax exemption exemplifies the fundamental disconnect between Republican policy solutions and the actual scale of working families' economic crises like medical bankruptcy
  • Even in competitive authoritarian systems with state propaganda apparatus, electoral backlash remains possible when opposition candidates reframe elections around corruption rather than ideology
  • Congressional sexual misconduct allegations are creating a moral reckoning that extends beyond individual resignations to expose broader hypocrisy in how politicians address accountability
  • JD Vance's failed diplomatic missions reveal the danger of assigning complex international negotiations to inexperienced operatives in a chaotic administration

Donald Trump isn't fooling Trump voters. That's a disgrace. I find it apolitic. It's disgusting. I'm ashamed that he would actually do that. A man I voted for and trust. Tonight, Senator Bernie Sanders on an out-of-control president and the people he's hurting. Plus new allegations and two stunning resignations from Congress. Then the bright flashing warning signs for Donald Trump in the wake of Hungary's vote. And are we sure JD Vance is the guy to negotiate peace? How did JD do it? Did he give a good speech to everybody? It's very early, sir. But All In starts right now. Good evening from New York. I'm Chris Hayes. Donald Trump is a profoundly unwell man. Now, if you're a regular viewer of this program, you've probably heard me make some variation of that argument for over a decade now. But still, even by the very degraded standard we have become acclimated to, it is quite clear that he has taken a turn for the worse. This week, The New York Times published a lengthy article on the president's mental state, highlighting Trump's quote, erratic behavior and extreme comments in recent days, noting that his words and actions quote have left many with the impression of a deranged autocrat mad with power. Huh, you think? We all knew this before The New York Times published this piece because we've been watching it. We're alive. We're eyes are open. Most recently, Trump shared an AI image of himself depicted as Jesus Christ healing the sick. If you have a few minutes to look at the rest of that image, including the man with a hat that says Patunia and some sort of Satan figure, you should check it out. Now, the image sparked international outrage among the more than two billion Christians worldwide, including, I think, notably, quite a few members of Trump's own base. It is obviously him purporting to be God. That is what he's doing. And it is blasphemous by any definition of that word. I actually just looked it up just to have it at the ready. I mean, blasphemy is a reverence towards sacred entities. But here's a longer definition, the act of showing great disrespect, contempt, or defiance toward God, sacred persons, or holy things, insulting, mocking, or slandering the divine. That's what he's done. It's completely inappropriate and he knows it. I don't know why the president's getting so desperate for attention that he feels the need to mock 1.4 billion Catholics. It's enough, okay? It's enough with this nonsense. Don't do that anymore, Donald Trump. But it's not just MAGA hosts, MSNOW reporter Alex Tabott, heard something similar from voters in deep red, Brandington, Florida. As a Christian, how do you feel when you see this image? Offended. Yeah, I'm ashamed. I'm ashamed that he would actually do that. It's a man I voted for and trust. You know what I'm saying? People are going to see this at work. I'm upset about it. So what's next? I find it appalling. It's disgusting. You're mocking, you're mocking my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He's mocking it. I just, I don't agree with it. I think that, I think you should put his phone down and focus on running the country. Blast for me. Just straight up blast for me. And he's going to pay for it. One day like all of us, he's going to have to stand before the Father and he's going to answer for all this bull. It's actually a pretty good sentence long description of Christian catechism there. Eventually, the outrage reached the level where Trump was actually forced to back down. He yanked the post and perhaps unsurprisingly, the off ramp he chose was lying. Mr. President, did you post that picture of yourself depicted as Jesus Christ? Well, it wasn't depicted. It was me, I did post it and I thought it was me as a doctor and had to do with Red Cross as a Red Cross worker there, which we support. And only the fake news could come up with that one. So I had, I just heard about it and I said, how do they come up with that? It's supposed to be me as a doctor making people better. And I do make people better. I make people a lot better. Yeah, I mean, obviously he heals the sick by laying hands on them with a magic beam emanating from his palm. It's a photo again, depicting Trump in a white robe, healing the sick with a glowing touch. You can decide for yourself what it looks like. Is that a Red Cross doctor? But that's how the President of the United States spent the third of his week. Of course, there's a larger context here that's pretty important because Trump's post comes amid a series of bizarre self-pitting attacks against Pope Leo, the first American pontiff. Over the weekend, Trump won a social media tirade against the Holy Father, writing quote, Pope Leo is weak on crime and terrible for foreign policy. And I have to say begrudging credit where due, calling the Pope weak on crime is one of the absolute funniest things he's ever said. I have been chuckling about it to myself for two days, just banging around my head. That Pope is weak on crime. But Trump also took credit for Pope Leo's entire papacy, writing quote, if I wasn't in the White House, Leo wouldn't be in the Vatican. This one-sided feud stems from the fact that Pope Leo has been very critical of Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu's war on Iran. A war of choice which has killed thousands, including hundreds of school children. It's left more than a million displaced throughout the region. And that position, opposition to this war, of course, is entirely consistent with Catholic doctrine and I would note, not unique to this particular Pope. His predecessor, Pope Francis, was very outspoken in opposition to war on Gaza. The Pope, John Paul II, lobbied against the Iraq war back in 2003. Donald Trump has decided that Pope Leo's prayers for peace are a personal attack on him. I don't think he's doing a very good job. He likes crime, I guess. We don't want a pope that says crime is okay in our cities. I don't like it. I'm not a big fan of Pope Leo. He's a very liberal person and he's a man that doesn't believe in stopping crime. He's a man that doesn't think that we should be toying with a country that wants a nuclear weapon so they can blow up the world. I'm not a fan of Pope Leo. Trump's social media platform is even running what it calls a featured ad, pushing the question, do you support Trump against the Pope? Amid all this, Pope Leo has done his best to stay above the fray. Bless the other peacekeepers. I do not look at my roles being a political politician. I don't want to get into a debate with him. I don't think that the message of the gospel is meant to be abused in the way that some people are doing. And I will continue to speak out against war, looking to control peace. I have no fear of the other Trump administration nor speaking out loudly about the message of the gospel. It shouldn't go unsaid that the criticism of how Trump has handled the war that he launched with Israel against Iran is entirely rational. I mean, he seemingly has little desire to stop the carnage. His most recent plan was to send Vice President J.D. Vance himself a Catholic convert to negotiate a deal with Iran to reopen the Strait of Home Moves to American strips. It failed spectacularly. We're going to have more on how that happened later in the show. Iran, I got to say, somewhat understandably, was unwilling to negotiate with an administration which just a few days before had explicitly threatened genocide against their entire country. Trump warning of total civilizational destruction on social media. Another thing that has made some people wonder whether he's all there. The president decided his new strategy would be, get this. If Iran is going to blockade the Strait of Home Moves, then the US is also going to blockade the Strait of Home Moves. To stop ships from entering and departing Iranian ports doesn't really make a ton of sense. Our foreign allies have come to the same conclusion. European leaders are already working on planning to get the Strait reopened without the United States. Again, because, I don't know, man, the guy that runs the United States is just not there. He's checked out. He can't be trusted to act rationally at this point. Even some of the president's most ardent supporters like former Republican Congressman Marjorie Taylor Greene or InfoWars host Alex Jones have expressed support for removing Trump from office through the 25th Amendment. That's the amendment that allows for the removal of the president who's unable to serve. And today, Democratic Congressman Jamie Raskin of Maryland introduced legislation aimed at beginning that process. And while that's just a messaging bill, it doesn't have a great chance of becoming law, although God knows, it does highlight the just genuine palpable, enduring danger of having a wartime president who acts like a madman. Senator Bernie Sanders is an independent Vermont. He's forcing a vote tomorrow to block nearly half a billion dollars in arms sales to Israel amid this war, which does, at least in Lebanon, Israel continue. And he joins me now. Senator, let me just start with the context here of the way the president acts, which he acts in an aberrant fashion and has for 10 years. But the way that he's acting now, which seems particularly aberrant in some ways, and particularly dangerous because he started a war that remains the background context in which real people have died and real people have been injured and hasn't been brought to any discernible resolution as far as I can tell, at least. Chris, clearly we have a mentally unstable president of the United States. He lies all the time. The image of himself as a divine being, a Christ-like figure, is insulting to not only Catholics but the people all over the world. This is the guy who wants to have half of the buildings in the country named after him who allowed Netanyahu, who has been trying for 40 years to get a president to support a war with Iran, with Trump, Netanyahu succeeded. What we're going to do tomorrow is bring forth two resolutions, which basically say, I think, what the American people want Congress to do. That is, we cannot continue to fund the extremist government of Netanyahu who has been waging an all-out war, genocidal war in Gaza, who started the war in Iran, who is violating all kinds of international law in the West Bank, killing Palestinians there, knocking down homes. And it's now a war, an expansionist war in Lebanon, which as you mentioned a moment ago, has not only killed thousands of people, it has displaced over a million people, and Israel now occupies something like 14% of the territory of Lebanon. And the American people are saying, is this really what we should continue spending billions of dollars on when we have so many problems at home? And I hope that tomorrow we get a good vote on those resolutions. In terms of problems at home, and part of what's remarkable about this turn of events is that it is exacerbated precisely the things that people are most concerned about, affordability, particularly being able to fill up their cars. I saw this incredible quote from Kevin Hassett, who's an economics advisor to the president, about the oil prices that I want to play for you and get your response to. Take a listen. If oil prices start going back down because the situation resolves itself somehow, then you could be looking at inflation close to zero. So that's something that the Fed needs to pay attention to. Because remember, energy prices going down would feed through just as, you know, CPI, top-life CPI has said that energy prices going up right now. I mean, I guess the idea is that if energy prices go down, it will be better. But energy prices are going up right now, which does seem to be the problem. This is his economic advice. I said, well, God help us all. Look, the reality is Netanyahu's wars in Gaza, West Bank, Iran, Lebanon have not only been grossly immoral and destructive, but they are also impacting billions of people throughout the world. Here in the United States, you know, we're having 60% of our people living paycheck to paycheck. And now what they're having to deal with is gas in Vermont. I think it's over four bucks a gallon. Parts of the country is higher than that. And that means less money for food, less money to be able to pay the rent. So what you are saying is all across this country, you know, you've got Republicans who say, gee, this guy promised us that we would not get involved in never-ending wars. We would not get involved in the mid-east. This guy who said he was going to bring down prices, controlled inflation. And what do we got now? You got an endless war, which by the way may end up costing us a trillion dollars. And Trump's thought is that when we spend that money, we can cut back on health care and childcare to pay for the war. Pretty crazy stuff. And you know, now we have an affordability crisis magnified because of the war. So that is why I think you're seeing people all over this country are saying, hey, what world is President Trump living in? You know, it's hard sometimes amidst in the Trump era to have sort of policy debates because in some ways he's so dis—he doesn't care about policy and he's so sort of detached from it to be honest that you don't have them a lot. But there was a moment I thought I wanted to get your response to. There's a moment where he does a little stunt yesterday with it. He has this woman who works for DoorDash, who comes and delivers McDonald's via DoorDash and he gives her a tip. And it's meant to highlight this policy from the tax bill, which was an exemption on a certain amount of money that in tips, on taxes and tips. And I thought actually this is actually a kind of crystallizing moment of the Trump Republican approach to policy. And I want to play it for you and get your response because basically the idea is here's a woman who works delivering food, who can now exempt some of her tips from taxes so that she could pay for her husband's cancer treatment. Take a listen. So the no tax on tips is something special, right? It's very special. And that's the one that really pertains to you more than anything else. Yes, sir. Yes, it's fantastic. So it's such an honor to meet you. And I think you voted for me, do you think? Maybe. You understand your husband's going through a treatment, right? Yes, sir. Yes, sir. He's going through some very serious cancer treatments. Yes. This goes a long way. So that's it. I mean, but it is kind of crystallizing, right? Like that is the policy mechanism. We're going to exempt some of your taxes on tips so you can kick in for your husband's cancer treatment. I think you just said this exemption on tips is going to go quote unquote a long way to pay for cancer treatment. Really. Really. I mean, you know, cancer treatment in this country costs hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars. People are going bankrupt. They're depleting their financial savings. And that's his response. And it really once again shows you how far Trump and his oligarchic friends are from the reality facing working families. Senator Bernie Sanders, who will be introducing those two bills for a vote, I think tomorrow. I think it's a public resolution, right? So those will, I think get a vote. We will be looking for that tomorrow. Senator, thank you very much. Thank you very much. Coming up Donald Trump feeds his latest vice president to the fire. J.D. Last week, he went to Hungary to rally support for the reelection of Prime Minister Victor Urban, who then lost decisively on Sunday, absolutely crushed supermajority for the opposition party for the first time in 16 years. Now Vance is saying, well, the administration knew that would happen all along. One of the reasons why we decided to do that, Brett, is not because we can't read polls. We certainly knew there was a very good chance that Victor would lose that election. We didn't go because we expected Victor to cruise to an election victory. We went because it was the right thing to do to stand behind a person who had stood by us. Right. Yes, a person who had tried to transform his country into essentially a one-party dictatorship, and which you want to do too. From Hungary, Vance was then dispatched, of course, to Pakistan to negotiate an end to the war with Iran that Donald Trump started. On his way there, he reminded everyone, this guy has no credibility and zero experience in this field. He said, we refuse to give up the right to enrichment. And I thought to myself, you know what? My wife has the right to skydive. But she doesn't jump out of an airplane because she and I have an agreement that she's not going to do that because I don't want my wife jumping out of an airplane. Okay. Because preventing your wife from skydiving is the same as preventing and around from developing nuclear weapons. Also, is that a source of continued negotiation and tension in your household? Anyway, all he went to negotiate, oh, while his boss and the country's top diplomat, the guy that runs the State Department, attended a UFC fight. Once again, Vance failed to accomplish his mission. We've been at it now for 21 hours, and we've had a number of substantive discussions with the Iranians. That's the good news. The bad news is that we have not reached the agreement. Oh, wow. Well, who could predict? After that string of failures, his next big move was to pick a fight with the Pope. But I certainly think that in some cases, it would be best for the Vatican to stick to matters of morality, to stick to matters of what's going on in the Catholic Church, and let the president of the United States stick to dictating American public policy. John Lovett is a host of Crooked Media's Love It or Leave It, and co-host of Pod Save America, and he joins me now. John, I feel like there is always the threat for a vice president to become a VP-like figure. It could be a very dangerous and precarious political position because you are the number two, because you don't actually get to control your own destiny in some ways. You can't break with the president. I feel like he's had a real VP-like week this last week. He's discovering what others have discovered in the past, which is you get into business with Donald Trump. You think you're in on the scam, but you're actually the mark the whole time. JD Vance said he was so smart. You're right. Other vice presidents have, I think, become VP-like figures, but they didn't think that the president was a fraud. I don't know what Dick Cheney really thought of George W. Bush, but he certainly didn't think of him. What JD Vance actually thought of Donald Trump. Now, I think JD Vance can convince himself of anything, but he is now owning his choice to associate himself with Donald Trump, a person whose character he knows well. This is the consequence. What did you think? I have to say, I thought I was on vacation, but things were penetrating the sort of vacation bubble. I was selectively letting them through. I just thought that split-screen of, Vance is going to go negotiate with Iranians and come out and be like, we don't have a deal. While Donald Trump and Marco Rubio, who's the person that everyone thinks is the sort of nearest competitor for the mantle, are together. You see what? That felt cold to me on the part of Trump. Yeah. Look, I just think as a rule, if you're looking for flights between Budapest and Islamabad, without stopping at home first, like maybe things have not gone exactly as you would have hoped. He went to Hungary, which was just about the friends he made along the way. Then he goes to Islamabad. By the way, I'm happy to have JD Vance tarred with Donald Trump's failure, but it's only in the adult goldfish brain of Donald Trump that you can reach a stalemate in 15 minutes of negotiation over an incredibly complex situation. I think the Obama deal with Iran took over a year, I believe, but of course it would. Now you've added in the complication of, we declared war on the country over their nuclear program, which we'd already had claimed was obliterated. Yeah, he didn't get it done in a day. That's stupid. Yes, when he came out and said, we've been at it for 21 hours. Again, this was another moment where he has been so effective in his life of essentially cultivating mentors that put him in positions of power and prestige and proximity that you forget that it's a real thin resume this guy has. That is no small thing to be the lead negotiator in what are the highest stakes international negotiations in, since probably the Iran deal under Barack Obama. He was like a US senator for half a second that he has his job. There's no reason to think he could do it. Well he's got such a great team around him too, of course. You have Steve Wittkopf there. You have Gared Kushner who's not even a part of his government. Yeah, just a guy. Just there, I guess, to offer, to spitball, I suppose. Yeah, remember the Coen Powell called it the pottery barn rule, which is you broke it, you bought it. That is a rule of pottery barn. I think there are more. They have more generous return policy actually. This is the Taj Mahal rule, which is Donald Trump broke it and it is going to be your problem JDMans because he broke it, you bought it. Isn't it a quaint to think about his efforts in the early days of this conflict leaking that he wasn't actually for it as if there was some hope that he wouldn't own it? He got yelled at today from the audience at TPUSA, I believe, because he is going to be associated with this and responsible for this person who campaigned telling us that Kamala would be the one to take us to war in the Middle East and Donald Trump was the person who would focus on America first. And now they have to go around trying to defend high gas prices. The best they can do is say briefly during COVID they were a little bit higher, which I don't think gets them very far. So yeah, he's in a real bind. He thought he was a con man and you can't con an honest man. Yeah, we just showed the shot. They had a Turning Point USA event in Georgia today, the University of Georgia, and clearly like booked an enormous venue, which is overwhelmingly empty. Here's that exchange he had with a heckler when he again was kind of like going right back at the Pope, the Pope's theology on war and peace is wrong and then he gets interrupted. Take a listen. Those guys on the side of the Americans who liberated Holocaust camps and liberated those innocent people from, you know, those who had survived the Holocaust. I certainly think the answer is yes and I agree. Jesus Christ does not, I agree. Jesus Christ certainly does not support genocide. Whoever yelled that out from the dark, he certainly does not. I think that's pretty easy. I think that's a pretty easy principle. Okay, so why is there any genocide in Iran? And you're right that whatever he leaked to the press is not, is that the distance on this is that's not going to get the job done. Also a guy that just went to Hungary to tell them how to run their country telling an American from Chicago to focus on morality as opposed to war and peace and immigration. And I, and look, what is, I just, I think he wants the Pope to just be talking about like the rhythm method, like basically just limited to the, to the hits. He wants the Pope on the hits. He's a guy from Chicago. Have you ever tried to get a guy from Chicago to stop talking about something he's interested in? It's not possible. He's a middle-aged Chicago and he's going to talk to you about Trump. And I gotta say it is a remarkable moment to have the American, the first American Pope at this time with Donald, like the Pope and Donald Trump is probably the two most famous Americans in the world. And watching this moment play out is remarkable. John Lovett, always great to have you come by. Good to see you. The woman, a model who worked in fashion technology named Lana Drews, held a news conference in Beverly Hills today where she described the assault. We want to warn you it is graphic and very upsetting. He was my friend. On the third occasion, I believe he drugged my drink. I only had one glass of wine. When I arrived at his hotel room, I was already incapacitated and I couldn't move my arms or my body. He raped me and he choked me. And while he was choking me, I lost consciousness. He was the latest in a series of women to come forward about Swalwell since Friday when the San Francisco Chronicle broke the story of a former staffer who accused him of rape. He denies all the allegations but has apologized for what he is calling, quote, mistakes in judgment. And then over the weekend, Swalwell dropped out of the race for governor of California and less than two hours after the latest accusations from Lana Drews, Swalwell resigned from Congress effective this afternoon. He is now out. Fashacure is a senior advisor at the Center of Bernie Sanders, executive director of More Perfect Union. April Ryan is a White House correspondent at the Contrarian where she hosts the Tea with April Ryan and they both join me now. April, I think for years people that have covered Capitol Hill have, there have been certain members of Congress and sometimes in some sense there are certain staffers that there are rumors about, that there's a whisper network about. And I think there was a false sense that the Me Too movement and moment kind of purged those folks and brought it all light. And I think one of the things you're seeing here is not really. Yeah, not really is right, Chris. Here's the issue. There's hypocrisy on the Hill, even as we had the Me Too movement a few years ago. Think about years before that during the Clinton era. You had Newt Gingrich who had to step down because he was pointing fingers at Bill Clinton and then he had to take a look and point fingers at himself. This is not new, right? And we have those moments of hyper sensitivity over issues. But then there's a reality. Eric Swalwell is not the only person. There are several people who are under investigation on the Hill. There are several people who have these serious allegations against women. And the bottom line is the hypocrisy of it all. I hear what you're saying about Me Too, but the hypocrisy of it all is they say I'm standing for women and not objectifying them and pushing for the victims of the Epstein tragedy to be seen. Here we are. How can you say I'm here to fight for you? And then that happened. And then also, you have Mike Johnson talking about people need to step down. If he's pointing fingers in his own house, he needs to go down the street on the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue and take a look at the president of the United States by the name of Donald John Trump. Yes. I mean, that, that, that, of course, remains the thing that hangs over all of these stories, right? Which is that this person who a New York civil jury found libel, you know, for, for sexual offenses with a woman who says that he raped or sexually assaulted her and, you know, had a jury in front of her peers when she said he defamed him by, by denying that. There is an interesting dynamic that's emerged as here over the last few days, which is also that there was real disgust, I think, in the Democratic caucus with the Swalwell stuff and a move for expulsion. And because Tony Gonzalez had several allegations against him, including an ex-staffer who, ended up committing suicide after having, I think, a sexual affair with him and, and being sort of prodded into sending photos, he has also resigned, both of them have resigned. I'm curious to someone who spent a lot of time on the Hill, like, how you think that dynamic has kind of come about and whether it stops here or it doesn't. I feel like I saw this in the first Trump administration and now, again, that because of the corruption and the callousness and the hubris and the egotism that with which he operates, you can sense that there's actually a desire for morality, honesty, ethics, integrity among the populace at large in the country and this desire for just the golden rule, do unto others as you would have them do unto you, the sense of service within religion. You almost get a sense that within the country, an unmooring from ethics and values and religious underpinnings that people are fighting back for. This is why the attacks on the Pope and the Epstein files, they have a deeper dimension to them. There's a sense of a loss among society that we're losing our moorings of what is basic humanity and decency and you see it coming out even in the, both in the shame of some of the members, rightly so, that you have to leave because you do this activity, you are no longer allowed here, but it's being driven because of a sense within the prevailing mood of this country that we want a different kind of politics. I think this is exactly right because I think there was a sense of, in 2017, 2018, this disgust at Trump and then this broad sort of social reckoning and then there was a sort of moment in 2024 where it's like, you can do anything, you can get away with anything. Look, we're going to, Pete Hegseth has an allegation of raping a woman, which he denies, but he paid a settlement for and that's good enough to be the secretary of defense and everything's permitted, you can get away with anything and then the backlash to that backlash now, April. And the thing that I'm curious to hear you talk about is the psychology of politicians and the idea of running for governor. You have apparently gotten away with this or gotten away with a lot of you. He denies the sexual assault allegations, but admits to other stuff. To run for governor, it just seems like a psychotic psychology. It's ego, Chris, we've seen it. Politics is about service, right? Yes, you can serve, but there's also something else, ego, sometimes for some of these politicians, oh, they'll never find out or I can do this and I can still run. It's about the victim. It's not about the person, it's about the victim and how they were, whatever, how they succumbed to the power, to the presence of the power, to the closest of the power. This is, you're right, it's psychotic. And right now, a lot of these are allegations. They need to come out. The investigation has to happen, but again, I'm going to put it back as well. Going back down to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, as Mike Johnson is talking about all of this, there needs to be a conversation, testimony, something on the Hill with Donald John Trump to explain the relationship with Jeff Epstein and all of the allegations. All he has to do is talk because this was something that he talked about on the campaign trail and the fact that he's running away from it. That's the reason why Marjorie Chail agreed ran away from him, one of the many reasons. And other people, Tucker Carlson and more. This is a serious offense. These are serious offenses against women, objectifying, harming and violating women. These are serious allegations and it's ego and psychosis, if you will, at the same time. Yeah. And I think you're right to identify, Fazz, that both the sort of hunger for this kind of thing, bringing back shame, like some behavior is not acceptable, it's not okay to do that. You can't serve in Congress, you're dead. And I do think also that the Epstein, the bipartisan Epstein stuff, to me played some sort of important psychological role in resetting people around this because I think there was this weird kind of obsession with vice is good on the right in the magnum only because of Trump. Do you think that's true? Yeah, absolutely. We saw voices that were, maybe it's called them unlikely within Trump's own base saying that this is a bridge way too far, that it was also violent of their senses of how you treat children in society and how you deal with women in society, that it was just a bridge too far for them and that was helpful to changing the construct. I would just say two cents for everyone running for office out there is that when you serve in public life, your obligation is to serve others beyond yourself. Don't sign up for the task and the responsibility if you can't hold yourself up to a higher standard. That is what the public demands and expects of you and you have to own that crown. I mean, if you're going to jump into public life, be someone to emulate and care about with decency and respect upon others. Fascist, care able Ryan, thank you both, appreciate it. Still to come as Victor Urbán's rule in Hungary comes to an end in a remarkable fashion. Truly thrilling. What Americans learn from his fault. Next. For months, Donald Trump has been publicly urging Republicans to quote nationalize the voting to take over this year's midterms. He's been trying on all sorts of ways to do that. He's been making this election cycle into a kind of stress test, which is can American democracy emerge triumphant over a regime that political scientists called competitive authoritarianism. That's the thing that Donald Trump is trying to establish here in the US. And what competitive authoritarianism means is yes, you still have elections, but the party in power, the ruler in power uses every last tool in the book legal or illegal to essentially tilt the playing field and make it so that the election isn't fair. One thing we are seeing though is as dangerous as that type of system is. You still do have public opinion and backlash can still exist. And that is the thrilling lesson from Hungary over the weekend where Victor Urbán who had perfected this model. He gerrymandered voting districts to favor his party. He manipulated the rules in all the ways that Trump is trying to do. He managed to stay in power for 20 of the last 28 years and yet and yet and yet this weekend he got his butt kicked. He lost. He was met with a resounding repudiation in that national election by an activated populace. David Pressman served as a US ambassador to Hungary in the Biden administration. He's now a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress and he joins me now. It's good to have you here. Good to be with you, Chris. I found it thrilling. I mean, I've got to imagine is you have been deeply connected to this country and invested in it. We've talked about it. We've known each other for many years. So we've talked about it. Just at the first level it must have felt incredible to watch. It's extraordinary. I mean, watching those Hungarians on the street that you just showed and the courage and the bravery and the resilience that they demonstrated over the course of these 16 years, really remarkable and inspiring. You know, one of the things I think it's hard to communicate is just how vicious and ubiquitous the sort of state media propaganda apparatus was in Hungary. And I only really kind of understood it from talking to you because again, we've been friends and know each other for a long time. These are just some headlines from one of the major state newspapers about you. Oh, great. Disgraced Pressman continues to berate Hungary from Palmer to Pressman, Budapest Embassy pressurizing Hungary's right wings to the 1990. David Pressman falters in job role. I mean, you were a public figure, but you were you got to first hand taste of what it meant when the state apparatus in the ostensibly free country trained its weapons on you. Indeed. And one of the things that Victor Orban did very successfully is he created this propaganda apparatus network and he used it decisively to shape individuals decision making about their readiness to engage in politics. Right. Because for you, you're the US ambassador. He can't do anything to you, really. It I had a really privileged position and indeed I took it as my job and the president of the United States saw it as my job to advance US interest and values in light of that position. Right. And so one of the things I mean, Peter Magyar and myself were the prime targets of this propaganda apparatus. But one of the things that is so remarkable about what's happened in Hungary is that this candidate has managed to penetrate that propaganda network and still connect with Hungarians. And I think, you know, Magyar and his press conference yesterday spoke about he he had a press conference, first of all, and he took questions from independent media, which is which is new in Hungary, by the way. And one of the things he said when he turned to the foreign reporters in the room is he said, you know, I don't think you understand that this propaganda network, it was like North Korea style propaganda. And on that he was right. And it was extraordinarily effective and chilling political activity and dissent. So the next question that becomes and I've seen is amazing. You got to sort of tip your cap to people who were big Orban stands on the American right or like, well, if he lost, then it was fine. Then it wasn't competitive authoritarianism. And what are you liberals complaining about? Right. That just entirely misunderstands Hungary and Orban's grip on power. There were elections in Hungary. And in fact, when I when I think about municipal elections, the elections of mayor, your city, your township, you could go to the ballot box, you could cast your your ballot, your ballots would be counted. And in fact, whoever received the most votes would take the office of, for instance, mayor. What would happen next, however, is really remarkable is that all of your city's national funding resources would be removed. The security services are familiar, by the way. Well, it might. Yeah. And indeed, some of the developments we've seen in the United States are eerily similar to the developments I watched in Victor Orban's Hungary. But all of your resources would be taken away. The security services would begin investigating you. You would be prosecuted for small tax fraud. Right. So the cost of exercising your democratic vote was extremely high. So is it a democracy if you're able to cast your ballot and you're the person who receives the most votes becomes the office holder? And yet the cost of that decision is so extraordinarily high, it's existential. So then how did mayor Peter Meyer, who's the opposition leader who won? How did the opposition having mounted remarkably brave efforts to beat Orban and then turn back and back and back? How did it work this time? Well, I think a few things. One is he was not having a policy debate. This was not a campaign that he ran based upon, are we pursuing liberal policies or conservative policies? Peter Majard spoke, including as recently as yesterday, about Victor Orban's government as an organized criminal entity that he needed to dismantle. So it wasn't about policy, it was about kleptocracy. And I think what Majard was able to do is he also went out into the countryside. When I went to Hungary as ambassador, I was told that the rural countryside is Victor Orban country. They're unsuable, they're unmoved. Also familiar. But Majard showed up and he showed up and he talked to them about the reason why your schools are failing is because these guys are stealing from you. And the reason your hospitals are failing is because these guys are stealing from you. And that mobilized Hungarians because it was true and consistent with their experience. Ambassador David Preston, what a great tabby here. Thank you. Got to say it's very nice to be back in the anchor chair after an absolutely incredible trip to Japan with my family. Got to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom. Huge thanks to Aiman, Ali, and Antonia for manning the fort while it was gone. That does it for all in.
