It's the lockdown podcast network, your team every day. Day five spring practice. We've got your report locked on LSU. Here we go. You are locked on LSU, your daily podcast on the LSU Tigers, part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day. Okay, let's get it. It is locked on LSU, your team every day. I'm your host, Matt Moscona. Thanks so much for making it your first listen. LSU was back on the practice field on Thursday for the fifth workout of spring. The media had our customary five periods. So five five minute periods. We got to watch about 25 minutes of drills. We watched the 11 on 11 period and then individual drills. I'll go ahead and give you my takeaways here. So thank you so much for hanging out with us. If you've been part of these reports as we've gone through the 11 on 11 periods, what I want to remind you is that what they've done to this point is what they call the quick six. So they'll come outside. It's the first thing that we get to see when the team comes outside. It's first offense, first defense, second offense, second defense, and they run sick. The offense run six plays very quickly, generally in some type of down and distance simulation. So on Tuesday, it was all third downs, right? It was third and 10, third and five, third and 15. And so they were running third down plays quickly as they were matriculating down the field. On Thursday, on this practice, day five, they went and did red zone. So everything was inside the 20 yard line and they didn't run six plays. They ran four plays. So I want to start by giving you the chart of how these four plays went. Then I got a lot of other personnel stuff I want to get to include a special teams. I did spend most time so far I've watched. I have watching special teams. So I'll get to that here in just a second. So Landon Clark continues to be the quarterback. We saw Caden Durham and Harlem Berry rotate the four plays at running back. So Durham, Berry, Durham or Durham, Berry, then Durham to wrap. But the first play they ran. So again, they're in the red zone. So they're inside the 20. We were in the end zone opposite where they were. So we were standing in the north end zone. They were going red zone toward the south end zone. So we were watching from behind the offense about 80 yards away. So imagine if you're in the south end zone watching the offense go toward the north end zone. First play was a straight roll out. They snapped Landon Clark and he rolled right. Caden Durham who is in the backfield emptied and dragged to the right like toward the sideline and Landon Clark hit him with a catch and Durham caught it and slid down. I don't know if the slide was intentional as if to say like get the first down, get down or if he slid because that was just where his momentum was taking him. But he caught the ball and slid. So it was a completed catch for about five yards. The second play this might have been a sack. Like if they were actually in a game or in a scrimmage situation with refs like there might have been like the pocket was collapsing on Clark. And he stepped up in the pocket as you would. He didn't roll out. He stepped up as you'd want him to do. But the rush was getting to him. Anyway, he unloaded into the back of the end zone back middle of the end zone and lo and behold trade as green with a leaping grab for a touchdown. Now, I don't know how they lost track of trade as but he was open in the back of the end zone and Landon Clark put it up. So trade as came down with with the touchdown on that second play. It is worth noting on Tuesday trade as was in a black jersey. And what I've been told is the black jerseys are lanes. No contact or limited jerseys. I think it's interesting because we talked about that on Tuesday that trade as was in a black jersey. Remember offense is white. Defense is purple. And then the quarterbacks are in gold. That's their no contact. Well, trade as was in black. So I didn't know what that signified. We all could assume limited but then the LSU football social media released a video after practice on Tuesday of trade as making a contested catch down field in 11 on 11. So it certainly didn't look limited. He looks fine is the point. I guess I'm making the third play. They ran a fade to the left side. So quick just catch throw just throwing a fade to the left pylon and it was it was incomplete. It was intended for Jackson Harris. He wears number four. He's the transfer from Hawaii. If there were reps they probably would have flagged the defensive back for PI now because Harris was in front of the DB. I couldn't see who it was. I think it was Jacim Jackson on that side of the field but I don't want to inadvertently call his name and I know I just said it so I don't want to. I might have just incorrectly done that. So I apologize if that's the case if it wasn't Jacim but but it was a pass the last it was incomplete but it probably would have been been PI had they been playing in a scrimmage scenario. And then the fourth play that they ran was a run play. It was a draw. They handed off the Caden Durham who fumbled. I not only if it was the the exchange or if Durham just dropped it or again because it was on the opposite end of the field but Durham was the back. He fumbled and it was recovered by Prince William on the Ellen who is playing the left end spot in that. I guess you know she me the right end spot in that defensive alignment. So those were the four plays we got to see and then they went to individual drills. So you had basically two plays that were good for the offense. The reception by Durham to touchdown to trade as then you had the incomplete on the fade which again might have been PI and then the fumble by Caden Durham. So it was a little bit of a mixed bag there and that 11 on 11 period. The other sort of notable thing that we've been telling you about really the only rotation has been at defensive tackle. Everything else was the same. We saw Uman Mielin and Ross at end. We saw your linebackers were daughtery and keys. The your corners were were picket and woodland your star was the Sean Spears and your safeties are Cooley and Ty Benifield. So that first defense remains the same. What we've seen rotate has been the defensive tackles and remember each of the last three practices. Deuce Gerald has been with the ones but they've rotated who's been next to him. It was Richard Anderson last Thursday. It was Malik blocked in on Saturday and then on Tuesday it was Don McKinley. Today it was it was Don McKinley and Malik blocked in. So Gerald's was not with the ones today. He moved to the other field with the two. So blocked in McKinley where you're starting tackles in that 11 on 11 period with what we got to saw see today. So it was the first time that we didn't see Deuce Gerald's there running with the ones in a week. So just a few interesting little tidbits there. Now they went to individuals. By the way I should note that when so those were the ones the twos were going 11 on 11 and one of the notes had tipped to Buddy Sanji who was watching the twos and he told me that that Malik Elsie the the transfer from Illinois. He's he wears 88 and he is a big bodied receiver. They they have Elsie listed at 62 to 14. He looks bigger than 62 just just flatly. He Roman Mother Shed is very clearly the biggest receiver they have. He's 65 208 Elsie looks bigger than 62 but that's what they have on the roster. Anyway, Elsie had a he lost the defensive back and caught a touchdown a leaping touchdown when the twos went in. It's a Hussein long street quarterbacking the twos while Landon Clark has been with the ones. Of course Sam Levitt remains out there present at practice but is not participating in any of the 11 on 11 work. We only we only get to see Levitt throw in the in the one on one drills or assuming that the quarterback receiver past catching drills against air. That's what we get to see with with Levin. Okay, it is locked on LSU. I'll tell you a few little takeaways that I had from the individual periods and special teams here as we continue. Stay with us. It is locked on LSU your team every day. One of the things is I went and watched the defense and special teams primarily on Thursday. I continue to be really interested with how Blake Baker and Chris Kiffin are splitting the linebackers and the stars. So when I first walked over there, both Baker and Kiffin were working with all of the linebackers. And I think what's going to be interesting to see is what players are actually listed as a star. Like for example, DeSean Spears is listed as a safety. But when the ones are out there in the 11 on 11s, he's running as a star. Jayce Thomas is listed as a safety. He's playing. He's wearing number 28. He's playing the star position as well. There's nobody on the roster that's listed as a star positionally. They're all listed either as a safety or a linebacker. For example, CJ Jim Coiley is listed as a linebacker. Keela Moses listed as a linebacker. But those are two guys that pretty consistently have been lining up with the stars. Well, on this day, all of the safeties went with Jay Colson. All of the linebackers went with Kiffin and Baker. And they were running linebacker drills. And then at one point during the practice, they split. And half the linebackers worked with Chris Kiffin. And the other half of the linebackers worked with Blake Baker. And I don't know necessarily that I think the linebackers that are playing star are the ones that went with Baker. Because while Keela Moses was there and we have seen him play star, so too was Devon Keys, who has only been an off the ball linebacker. So I don't know necessarily how they're dividing that up. Maybe it's just divide and conquer. Kiffin takes half the group. Baker takes half the group so they can get more reps. And in this, and I think with the star position, what we're seeing is in some instances, those players are working specifically with Blake Baker as star linebackers. But I think also based on the roster, if they're a linebacker or a safety, like we saw today, if you're a safety, whether you're playing a star position or not, you went and worked out with the safety stay with Jay Colson. If you're a linebacker, regardless of whether you're a star or not, you went and worked out with the linebackers with Baker and Kiffin today from what we saw. So it's interesting how they're divving that up because I think, you know, if I'm just, I'm guessing here and we haven't had the opportunity to talk to Blake Baker, and I don't know that we will because Kiffin does not allow his, his assistants to do interviews. And maybe this is a question for Kiffin next week. I think what you have to make sure and be mindful of is while whether you're a safety or a linebacker and you're learning the star position, there's a chance you're going to play safety or linebacker as well. So like, there's a real chance that you're an injury away from someone like Jay's Thomas playing safety. So even if he's working out with the stars, he still has to know the safety spots and same with the linebackers like Keel and Moses. So maybe and CJ Ross and CJ Jim Coiley and Charles Ross. So maybe that's just a way that they're divving it up. Now, I did go watch, there were a lot of recruits today among them Lamar Brown. So Lamar Brown was there. He's not practicing obviously, still in school at U High, but Lamar Brown was there in a sweatsuit and he was watching the Edge rushers. So again, Lamar Brown is on the roster already at number, forgive me, I thought they had him on, on the roster. They do not have him with an issue jersey number yet. But he is, I thought I saw this on the website. My apologies y'all, but he is listed among the freshmen not enrolled yet as an edge 66270 and he's is listed as an edge rusher. So even though Kevin Peeples recruited him and Peeples is now coaching the interior defensive lineman, Sterling Lucas coming in from South Carolina is coaching the Edge rushers. Lamar Brown today at practice was watching the Edge rushers during individual drills, which tells you, I get it, he's big, he's 66270, but he's working with the Edge rushers, not the interior defensive tackles. I think that's certainly where he's going to start during his career. Now, I also spent some time watching the specialists. And so there, I've told you this before, there's four full length football fields. The, the skill position players are on one field, the defensive players want another field, the special teamers warm one field and the offensive line was on another field. So I went position myself on the East sideline where the so I could watch the defense. And if I went to the, the, the, the Southeast end zone, I'm right there splitting two end zones where the specialists are working where the defensive law. So basically I was between the specialists and the defensive lineman. And so it was interesting because they were working on field on field goals. And so you had snap, hold and kick the three kickers in this order are Scott Starzik. He's the transfer from Arkansas, more on him in a second number 32, who is Gavin Higgins, the freshman from Parkview Baptist in Baton Rouge went second. And then the third kicker was Sean Perrette from, from, from Catholic High, who's in his, he's a red shirt freshman. So in his second year. So those are the three place kickers Grant Chadwick, who's back as your punter was the holder exclusively. And then your two long snappers were Silas Hall, who's returning as the long snapper. And then Mack Mulhern, who's the transfer from Florida. So remember Florida's special teams coach came over to join the staff. And so any brought with him Mulhern there as a, as the long snapper. So those were the, the, the, the, the participants that we saw in practice. The biggest takeaway is I don't think there's going to be much of a competition of place kicker. Scott Starzik has a gigantic leg. So what we, what they were doing is they started the 20 and they'd kick left, hash, middle, backup five, left, hash, middle, backup five, left, hash, middle, backup five. Starzik was consistently kicking the ball onto the other, like through the end zone, close to the other field. So for, for some context, there's probably 15 or 20 yards of space between the back lines of the end zones that of the fields that back up to each other that run long ways. So they were lining up at times, like, let's say the ball was placed at the 35. So it's a 47 yard field goal, right? So if you're, if you're lining up at the 35, you ball placed or you have 47 and then I, excuse me, I guess you have, if you're snapping from or holding at the 35. Forgive me. I know I'm getting my, my, my wires crossed here. So if you're snapping from the 35 and it's being put down as a 47 yarder, plus the end zone to be fit, should be a 57 yard or basically is what I'm saying. And Starzik was kicking the ball through the end zone, almost to the, now if there was a net, it would have been halfway at the net, but it was going through almost to the other fields, what I'm saying. So he was kicking the ball in excess of 60 yards with ease during, during these drills. He's got the biggest leg by far. The freshman from Parkview, Kiggins, missed two wide left. He was pretty consistently to the left from what I saw again. I didn't see the whole practice. I watched, you know, 15 minutes of them kicking. He was pretty consistently left. John Perrette was, was pretty accurate. It's just Starzik has the, Starzik has the leg. I mean, he's got, you could tell there's just a giant leg talent there. And I don't know this, but my guess is if you're looking for someone who's going to kick off and just kick the ball through the end zone, it would be Starzik. So that's how at least anyway, in this day it was lining up. So Silas, Paul, the long snapper, Grant Chadwick, the holder and, and, and Scott Starzik, the Arkansas transfer is a monster leg. Looks like he's going to be your, your number one place kicker unless if somebody somehow manages to unseat him, but that, that would be hard to tell at this point. So five days in the books, the Tigers are back on the practice field on Saturday. However, there is no media availability on Saturday. I was told the plan Saturday is to go into Tiger Stadium for a workout. And if we do get reports out of that, or they change the mind and we do get some access Saturday, I'll certainly be there and I'll give you a practice report. But if not, our next availability will be next Tuesday when the Tigers are back out starting week three of spring practice of the 15 practices five down, 10 to go.
