Summary

KSR broadcasts live from Paul Miller Ford in Lexington during a massive crowd event featuring Kentucky basketball players Malachi Moreno and Jasper Johnson ahead of their critical senior day game against Florida. The show covers the high-stakes SEC tournament implications, women's basketball's tournament positioning, and upcoming football spring practice under new coach Will Stein.

Insights
  • Senior day games with major tournament seeding implications create unique strategic decisions about playing time allocation for departing players versus competitive necessity
  • Home court advantage in Rupp Arena is positioned as a critical factor in a game where Florida is favored by 8-9 points, suggesting crowd energy directly impacts tournament seeding outcomes
  • NCAA tournament selection criteria now incentivize scheduling weaker teams for larger margins of victory over competitive mid-tier opponents, creating systemic scheduling inequities
  • Coaching staff transitions across the country require significant family relocation and adjustment periods that impact program stability during critical early phases
  • Player development and confidence building through targeted coaching feedback can produce measurable performance improvements in high-pressure tournament situations

Welcome everyone, it is Kentucky Sports Radio and for the third week in a row, a massive crowd. And this time in Lexington, Kentucky at Paul Miller Ford where it is packed. How about this, Ryan Lemon? Look at this crowd. I think the Lexington crowd heard what happened in Radcliffe and then heard what happened in Madisonville. They said, hold my beer. Here we come. I mean, I would say this is probably up there with the biggest Lexington crowd we've ever had. Everybody give a big round of applause. Let's go, Cats. Final game of the year coming up. Clark's Publish Shop phone line, 859-280-2287. A-Vision Auto Glass, text machine 772-774-5254. And this edition sponsored by the TJ Smith Law Office. If you call TJ, we'll make them pay. We are here at Paul Miller Ford right off New Circle Road where it is truck month. You can get a 2025 Ford F-150 with 0% APR for 60 months. And we are here in one of their many buildings. This is a complex. And we have a star-studded show. Our studded show. First of all, back in the back and who have been meeting fans have been Jasper Johnson and Malachi Moreno. And Malachi is going to come join us here in just a few minutes before he has to take off. Then we have from one of our favorite new additions to the Kentucky family, the folks from Sissy Cakes are back there and selling cakes. Debbie and Blakey. You talk about more people want to see the cakes than us. Drew, they are flying off the shelves back there. I brought my family. They had two bites, and I'm pretty sure we have, like, two big to-go boxes already to take home for dinner tonight. And then we also, standing back there, I won't point them out and embarrass them, but Will Stein's wife, Darby, and other wives of the coaching staff are here. So you should give them a round of applause, too. Never know who's going to show up here. And also, did you check out Jasper Johnson's truck right there to your left? That is one awesome-looking truck. Wait a minute, this is Jasper Johnson's truck? Got his name on it right there, and then Kentucky Till I Die on the back. My goodness. That is an awesome truck. That is an awesome truck. How's he getting out of here from there? I don't know. He's not going anywhere. We'll back him out. Oh, wow. So that's a Jasper Johnson truck. That is a heck of a truck. It's got the scratches next to it. Customized just for him. He helped design when he wanted on it, and they went out and did it for him. I like the blue lights on the wheel wells. Blue light. That looks awesome. Well, I may have to take that for a spin. 8-5-9-2-8-0-2-2-8-7. Text machine is 772-774-5254. A massive crowd getting ready for tomorrow's game against Florida. The Cats with a chance to get all the way up to the fourth seed in the SEC tournament if they win or all the way down to the tenth seed if they lose. One of the bigger games that Kentucky's played at home in a long time, 4 o'clock. I think, Ryan Lemon, it is going to be a wild crowd in Rupp Arena. I think if this is any indication of how it's going to be at Rupp Arena tomorrow, Ryan, I mean, senior day, last game, this crowd can help project it. Remember last year's Florida game was awesome. It was like at 11 a.m., and we didn't know if anybody would come, and it's awesome. There's something about when Florida comes in there now, that's where people probably get excited. What did it end up? Like 106 to 100, I think, last year. Yeah, it was a great game. I didn't even notice, by the way, the biggest star here, which is Abby Franklin is sitting here on the front row and expecting Abby Franklin sitting right here. Oh, and then Drew's parents. Where am I going? here. Front row and I miss all three of them. They felt bad. They couldn't make the hometown show, so they came out for this one. Abby brought our plus one there five weeks away. Five weeks away. So I'm starting to have the family here. Are you getting nervous, by the way, at all? Oh, no nerves. There are like, there's like a to-do list that I just feel like the moment you scratch something off, five things. See, I have no idea. What's on the to-do list? Well, I was actually talking strollers with the coach's wives back there. Strollers are a big part of it. Car seats. Look at that. I don't think that'll fit me. No, no, that's not for you. That's for the baby. I will say a lot. Wait a minute. By the way, the Drew Franklin I met is not with the coach's wives talking strollers. Well, I mean, yeah. That is a huge change from the Drew Franklin I hired at KSR. Well, the stroller's not going to buy itself. I mean, we went on vacation in Miami and went stroller shopping. I even looked in the mirror like, what am I doing right now? But you got to be prepared, and we're excited. So, Abby, is he doing a good job getting ready for it? Have you built a crib? Oh, you should see. Nursery's done. We just got to get all the little things. It's a long list. By the way, I will say I have to do a quick thank you. A lot of people have already brought stuff for us today, and I hear there's more after the show. So I don't know if we're doing like a parking lot shower after the show, but I want to, while I have the opportunity and it's on subject, thank you to everyone who brought some stuff this morning. That is very nice. Thank you all. And it just occurred to me that I'm going to have to figure out what to get you, and I don't know what babies do. But there should be a registry, right? I mean, in theory. Yeah. You just pick something off the registry. You know, I like to go. I like to go. You know what you're going to get her? A hoodie and a pair of shoes. A Diet Coke. Does she wear a size 12? She's already got a good shoe game. Okay. Already got some Nikes. 8-5-9-2-8-0-22-87. So, Kentucky and Florida, I have not seen a spread yet, Drew. I've been pretty good at guessing these. I'm going to – is there one out? I looked 20 minutes ago and there wasn't. I'll double check. I'm going to guess Florida 8-1-2, something like that. That's exactly what I was going to say. Is that what you were going to say? We could both be way off. Yeah. We're thinking the same. That's probably what I think, which I would guess is probably one of the highest spreads in Rupp Arena against Kentucky. I would say it's up there for one of the highest ever, but I would bet that's about what it is. Yeah, I mean, you lost by nine down there, I think. Kentucky, other than the two teams that beat Florida, Kentucky's played Florida closer than anyone else in the conference. Most teams have gotten smoked by them. And then getting home, I'd say to be around that nine number and top of single digits. But, you know, Malachi and Jasper are here, and so I will – I don't know if they're hearing right now, but I will say, Shannon, I genuinely – this is not just me saying – I genuinely think Kentucky can win tomorrow. Yeah. You know, watching the game – Good pop. Watching the game at Florida, I actually – you know, we played them really well except one little run that we gave early, and then that gap kind of stayed the gap. I think with this crowd – this is a huge game for the Kentucky crowd. I think Kentucky crowd, this has to be Rupp at its absolute best in order for Kentucky to get to the game. Huge game tomorrow. But, yeah, if you go back to that game in Gainesville, Kentucky had a chance there at the end to go on a run and possibly win the game. So I do have a lot of optimism about the game tomorrow, and I think that that home crowd is going to play big into the result of it. Well, I mean, I see a couple of the guys who are going to play a part of it back here. And, by the way, Jasper, this truck, come on now. That truck is insanely nice. Also, while Malachi is right there, if I may brag on him, in the Florida game, you know, they're all about rebounding. Their rebound numbers are insane. But until he got a little foul trouble, he was out rebounding their whole team in the first half. I think he finished with 11 boards. So more of that tomorrow, and you can be in a good spot. All right, I'll tell you what. Let's do this. Since they're here already, let's take an early break. And when we come back, we'll have Malachi Moreno and Jasper Johnson join us here on KSR. We will take a break and be right back. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. Ready for a different take on Formula One? Wouldn't you know it, Michael Schumacher is also a Capricorn Sun, Cancer Moon. The story of the sport's most consequential driver's strike. We have one man who, upon hearing that he was going to be fired, freaked out, and apparently climbed out the window of the bathroom. And was Daniel Ricciardo's illustrious F1 career a success story, a cautionary tale, or some combination of both? He started getting all this attention, and he maybe started to think, I'm bigger than this, I'm better. And plenty of other mishaps, scandals, and sagas that have made Formula One a delightful, decadent dumpster fire for more than 75 years. I hate those words that you make me uncomfortable. But I think when you get to a certain point, the fame or the success or the influence, it just accentuates and exacerbates the inherent person that you are. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio here live with Paul Miller Ford and now joined by two of Kentucky's own, Malachi Moreno and Jasper Johnson. And guys, how about this crowd out here to see you guys this morning? This is awesome. I've never been a part of something like that. You've never been? Well, I bet it won't be the last time. You guys have had a really amazing high school career in Kentucky and now playing at UK. Jasper, I'll start with you with the truck here. It says Kentucky Till I Die. What has it been like to get to play for your home state school all year? It's been incredible. I mean, it's something that I've dreamed about since I was a little kid. And, you know, coming here, having a great season so far, it's been everything that I've dreamed of. Whoa, well, I got a little bit too much there. Malik, same for you. I mean, you've had great success on the floor, and you've even had your mom calling in to post-game shows. I mean, that's how big this season's gone for you. No, it's been awesome. Just enjoying it day by day, having so much fun, and getting to enjoy it with my boy. When you started the year, I don't think people really knew. Your mom's been giving me a hard time because I said, I don't know how much you'll play this year, and then now you've ended up moving and starting. Did you expect to come in and contribute like you have so far? I definitely knew it was going to be a process, but I knew if I put in the hard work and just showed up every day with my heart out, I knew great things would come my way. Tell me, Jasper, what it has been like sort of, you know, this season's been up and down and up and down and up and down. What's it been like going through? I mean, you guys have some amazing wins. You also have some losses that have been kind of disappointing. What is that like to go through on a day-to-day basis? I mean, it's a lot. It's immensely challenging for sure, but I know the guys around me, my teammates and Coach Pope and the whole staff, we're all confident in each and of us. You know, we come in and practice every day with an elite mindset and just try to get better. What's a practice like with Mark Pope for both of you? I've been to one, but it was in front of the media, so I don't know if that was different. What's it like on a day-to-day basis? I don't really know how to describe it, to be honest. I mean, it's just all about getting better, just making sure we're paying attention to detail and just pushing each other to be the greatest version of ourselves. Now, we've seen Jasper different versions of Mark Pope, right? We've seen him – I saw him punch a board, and I didn't know he had that in him. Did you see that coming? No, definitely not. I mean, y'all, everybody says Coach Pope is a nice guy. I mean, yeah, he is, but there's definitely times where he brings some of that. Oh, so there's some screaming in him. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He gets to that Patino mindset and goes crazy at going to the Bulls, you know, practice and stuff like that. How many times does he say Rick Patino? How many times do you hear about Patino? Man, he always talks about how the times where he's gotten soft on us and how he used to, you know, have to go into games and stuff like that, even after a win. You know, he would put 12-0-1 or whatever. Oh, they'd get up and they'd run, yeah. He brings it out a couple times, but not too much. All right, I want to ask you about a couple of your teammates. Let's start with the guy that every game I have no idea what's going to happen. I'd like to have a camera on this dude in his day-to-day life, Malachi, which is Brandon Garrison. I mean, at any given moment, he could shoot a three or punch a guy in the face. What is it like playing with Brandon Garrison? It's awesome. He's always coming to work. He's a funny guy, always having fun in the locker room. He always pushes me to be better, pushes Jasper to be better. Have you all almost gotten in a fight? I mean, you have to go one-on-one with each other. Jasper's shaking his head. Jasper already told that story with those eyes. But, I mean, it's all out of love. We're just there to make each other better. You fight out of love? Yeah. Okay. It's like having an older brother, you know? Yes. Me and my older brother, Michael, we fought, but we fought out of love. Jasper, is there someone on the team whose job it is when he nearly fights someone to go hold him back? Oh. Coach McHale McLean. Yeah, Coach McHale. Is that really his assigned duty? Yeah. For sure. It's a couple of different people who have to hold him back, though, whenever he gets married. He's a big guy. Now, O-Way and Aberdeen, Jasper, you play with them in the backcourt, both seniors both I mean Aberdeen's won a title away of course was here last year are those guys have they been good sort of mentor figures for you this year yeah yeah they definitely have I know both guys have had great college careers and uh had a great experience so far and you know having their senior night tomorrow it's gonna be sad but that's their last game plan and Walker Horn yeah Walker Horn are you gonna be crazy Brian's crying for when Walker Horn right now walks my guy I've known him since uh you know Cowell's recruited me and when I take a couple visits, he was always there, you know, giving me some advice and stuff like that of what he's seen. He still does to this day. I mean, he's on the scout team. I'm telling you, walk and shoot the wall like elite at an elite level. He's a great guy to be around in the locker room and stuff like that. Alright, Malachi, I'm asking you for some scoop. Don't worry, Pope and the staff are not listening right now. Alright, they won't even know. Cam, we hear he's starting, maybe started practicing a little bit yesterday you think we might get to see some cam before the season is over i mean hopefully uh i'll see that's a pass politically correct answer hopefully i mean we don't we don't know the inside scoop but yeah he was in practice yesterday um and he was looking good from what i saw but i mean like i said it's not up to us it's up to cam and how his body feels and how the trainers look how the coaches feel whatever he can do on the court when he gets back I'm sure practices have been hard with your limited roster. We know how it impacts games, but has it been difficult in practice being so thin, and how helpful will he be just behind the scenes getting on the court in practices? Yeah, he'll be really helpful. You know, Cam's a guy who can play, you know, multiple positions, and so he definitely fills in a roster spot at any given time. He's an elite defender, elite shooter. So, I mean, you know, hopefully he can recover. And, you know, he looked good in practice the other day, but, you know, like Miley said, it's really up to him. By the way, you guys got some guys. I said this when I went to your practice. They don't get a lot of attention, but your scout team, I don't know who those guys are. They got some dudes that can ball on that team. Do they ever work you all in practice? No, there's definitely been some days. They've had a lot of running. Who's the old guy? You know what I'm talking about? Oh, Fitz. He's a bucket. He's like 6'8", and he wears six knee braces, and he will work you all sometimes, isn't he? Fitz is good, man. He was a pro for a long time, and he knows how to see the game. So, sometimes he just gets cooking one day. All right, tomorrow is Florida. You guys have already played them once. Malachi, you know they're bigs. They keep coming at you. They got all different kinds of talent. I think tomorrow is going to be one of the great Rupp Arena environments in terms of crowd. I just, I mean, look at this right here. You can see what it is. It's going to be like this times 50 tomorrow. How do you feel going into the Gators? I feel good. And we know what to expect, and we know what's coming our way. And it's time for a get-back. Time for the get-back. All right, now, Jasper, Xavier and Lee, he kind of got hot on us. Are you going to lock him down tomorrow? I'm ready to see some of that defense I saw at Woodford County in overtime. Yeah, all the guards are, you know, we really locked into the defensive assignment. I mean, Coach has been challenging us throughout the week to pick up our intensity, you know, trying to help our bigs out going into this Florida game. So we have a game plan, a scouting report on them, and we're going to try to do whatever we can to help maintain it. I'll finish with this. You guys are both from Kentucky. In addition to playing, playing at Kentucky gives you a lot of nerves anyway. Or, you know, a lot of pressure. Not nerves, but pressure. You guys, and I think Trent, have extra pressure with the sort of hometown guys. What's it like to go to play through that? And then what's it like when you're dealing with all these fans, knowing how much they want you to succeed? I mean, with me, I don't really feel like that much pressure. I know everybody in here is supporting me and the team at a high level. So, I mean, coming out and, you know, just doing everything that I practice and, you know, leaving it up to God and faith and just being an even kill all the time. On you, Jasper, that guy right there, Ryan Lemon, you do not have a bigger fan than him. Every game he says, I want to see Jasper Johnson more. That is your biggest supporter in the bluegrass right there. That's family right there. I mean, I've known them since before I was, you know, even playing basketball probably since a little kid. So I appreciate this. And Malachi, how about you with the pressure in Kentucky? I kind of think pressure makes diamonds. And it's kind of hard not to enjoy playing for Big Blue Nation. Yeah. And, I mean. What about your mom calling the postgame show? When you heard she called in, what did you think about that? Well, I'm going to be honest. I didn't know I was saying my last name wrong. Oh, wait a minute. You found out you were saying your last name wrong. Yeah, I thought I was saying it right, and then she told me that night, and then she called into the show and then called me after, like, 3 o'clock in the morning. Oh, I like this. So you tell me what you thought your last name was. I thought it was Marino. You thought it was Marino? Yes. But now you know it is Marino. Yeah. And so have you switched it? Yeah, I have. Oh, wow. How about that? Breaking news on KSR, you learned how to speak your name. Yeah, pretty much. Now, I knew your brother when he played. At his prime versus you at your prime, who wins? Is that even a question? I mean, he was good. Like, he was a good player. No, yeah, he was good, but he's not me. I love it. There you go. Well, I will say to you, I'm proud of both of you guys. I hope you're able to get the victory tomorrow. And last thing, a little March. You feel some March magic with this group you've shown. You can beat anybody. You can lose to anybody. But are you excited about what's coming in the next few weeks? Yeah, for sure. I mean, March is, you know, the best time of the year. It's a time where, you know, everything matters. And, you know, after the SEC tournament, you know, everybody's 0-0. There was a team in 2014 that had a season very similar to yours, up and down, up and down, was seated a little lower, and then went on one of the magical runs that have ever happened at this school. You all probably are still all – you remember it, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Malachi, let's hope it happens again. I really do. You know, we're ready. We've been battle-tested, and I think we have the pieces all put together, and now we're starting to click. All right, well, there you go. Everybody, Malachi Moreno and Jasper Johnson. Thank you guys very much We appreciate it I'll let you all take off I know you got places to go There you go, Drew Franklin Nice to talk with those guys I love how much they love the No, you're good You want to say something? Okay, go for it It's your show, my man So tomorrow Kentucky's going to go 1-0 But for my heart, Great Cross will be 1-0 too So get that done for them Oh, a Great Cross and shout out Oh, wait a minute Is it the finals tomorrow or semifinals? Semifinals. You got Great Crossing winning? Look at that. Shouting out his high school on the way out. I like that. Thank you guys very much. Appreciate it. Drew, I love both those kids in terms of how much they love the program and the state. Very nice of them to come on. Look, Ryan knows we're still on the air, and he's still talking because of how much he likes them. Yeah, I love hearing from them, and I love the confidence. I mean, I heard 2-0 tomorrow for Kentucky and Great Crossing. That sounds like a good day. So should we do the parlay, Kentucky, Great Crossing? I don't know if we'll find the Great Crossing on there, but I might dab on Kentucky. But that is the attitude you want to hear from your guys going into a big game. Your eyes lit up there talking to your guy Jasper. He's ready to make a move tomorrow. They are just not great basketball players. They are great kids. I mean, they are superstars. These are the type of guys you want your kids to grow up to be like, Not just a great athlete, but a great person. And both of them represent not just Lexington, but UK very, very well. Great ambassadors. 859-280-2287. Who's up first? Eli is up first. Eli, go ahead, Eli. Malachi's mom back there. Malachi's mom's back there. There's Malachi's mom. How about, by the way, him learning how to pronounce his name on this show? I love that. I love that. I love it. Go ahead. Eli. Eli. Matt, I just got season tickets to the Louisville Kings. just wondering if you're excited about the new UFL team in Louisville they play their first game at the end of the month we got Liam Oden and Benny Snell on the roster well I mean I like the idea of it I probably I haven locked into the Louisville Kings yet Drew because I kind of in March Madness mode but uh but uh I think it very cool they have them and I like that Benny Snell and those guys are on the team Yeah I follow them on social media I get all their content Benny, by the way, if anybody's following Benny on social media, he's big on doing the TikTok in these days. But to the extent of I'm locked in on the roster and the schedule, I'm not quite there yet. But I am excited to follow their start. I'm not there quite yet. Since we mentioned football, we said that Will Stein's mom, his wife, are here as well. You know, spring practice starts Tuesday. I don't know that people necessarily realize spring practice starts Tuesday. Will Stein's going to be on here for an extended interview on Monday. Great. So we'll be able to talk to him. But, you know, football is right here, and we're going to get to see. I mean, I can't think of a team we've ever known less about because we don't really know the coaching staff or the players yet, but I'm looking forward to it. I think all Kentucky football fans are really excited about the upcoming season, what Will Stein's going to bring to the table. You know, I think we're all – we don't know what Kenny Minchie, our quarterback, what's he going to be like. He picked number three, by the way, which has a history of being a good number. The Andre Woodson number. Greg Yeast was number three. Yeah, that is a good number. So I'm excited just to see him play and see what he's going to be able to do for this offense. A lot of fresh blood and looking forward to his exciting style of offense that he brings. And, you know, I know they've got a really tough schedule ahead, but I think that this year is going to be a fun one. You know, one of the things you don't think about, I was talking to Darby Stein. She said they just moved their entire family here two weeks ago. You don't even think about that transition. that all these coaches and their wives, they all have moved in the last couple of weeks. All the way across the country. All the way across the country from Eugene to Lexington. That is a huge transition. With two little babies. It's got to be tough. You're away from your family, kind of starting a new program, and your family is across the country. We will take a break and come back here at Paul Miller Ford. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. For seven decades, an active role in celebrating UK's rich sports heritage here at Paul Miller Ford, providing resources, sponsorships, and vehicles all here at Paul Miller Ford. Now, we got – this is like a big blue party here, Shannon. There's stuff going on everywhere. For those of you that are kind of just getting here, Sissy Cakes is right there. They also have free food. Is that free lunch over there? Kentucky Strong Barbecue back there. The Kentucky Strong Barbecue back there is free lunch for people here. So don't go. Now, don't everybody get up right now. You can do it during the breaks. And then there are free T-shirts right over here. So Paul Miller with all kinds of stuff for Kentucky fans. And they're also letting you sign up to win free tickets to tomorrow's game as well. Oh, there's a thing for free tickets to the game. But on the Sissy's Cake thing, man, I just crushed an entire slice of the blueberry. Oh, it's so good. It's as good as the orange. It is incredibly good. It is awesome. And we also have a defensive coordinator walking around here somewhere, too. I think I spotted. Not just the wives. I think there might be some actual staff in the building. Oh, our current defensive coordinator? I believe so. Oh. Per me. Well, hello there, wherever the current defensive coordinator. I won't blow your cover. 859-280-2287 on the text machine, 772-774-5254. One person writes, Matt, I really loved the show yesterday. It was really nice to hear from Larry. Thank you all very much for doing that. He was very grateful. So many wonderful comments all throughout social media yesterday. And Shannon, you unfortunately weren't able to join us, but Ryan, it was great being down there. It was awesome. Just getting a chance to give all the fans and listen to the show, could give Larry his flowers. And then he gets on the phone and on the radio, and we're all like, that's my grandpa, that's my dad. You know, we all immediately fall in love with that voice and how he's talking about things. And it was just kind of a special moment. I'm a big fan of Larry. I loved hearing him on the show yesterday. It's the first time he'd ever been on the radio with you. The thing I like about Larry is if you weren't there, he would talk without the microphone. Yeah. As if he had the microphone. So he just kept talking when he was off the air. I was like, you know what? You're welcome to come off. Did you see last night? Michigan State was playing Rutgers. I don't know if anybody watched it. Michigan State is up 18 with two minutes to go. Tom Izzo takes out all of his players and puts in all his seniors, most of whom don't play. But he puts them all out. They're up 18 with two minutes to go. Rutgers cuts it to one. Oh, wow. Now, they ended up winning, but the Michigan State fans, you could tell, were like, hey. We're glad you're seniors. You won't be here next year. That will not be much of a legacy, Drew, if you end up losing this game, and then they held on. But they cut it to one after being up 18 with two minutes to go. I saw a Barry Sanders kid was one of them, too. Barry Sanders in the house for senior night. That leads me to ask, though, are we starting our seniors against Florida tomorrow? How much run do Walker and Zach get in the beginning of the game? That's an interesting question. In Gainesville, you pretty much lost the game in the first five minutes and played them even from there. You know, I haven't thought about that. Do they still do that? We've only had Pope's experience once. Did he last year? I can't even remember. I think he did, but all the seniors were guys that played. That's right. That's right. We had so many older guys. So what are you doing? Are you starting them? I've always been starting them. Look at this lady. You look like you seem so nice. and you're like, no, Walker Horn and Zach Toe. You start them, first whistle, take them out. I think you give them their flowers. That could be a lot happening in the first whistle. I think you take the ball and walk out of bounds, get the whistle. I think somebody on Tubby's team did that. We got the tip, they tipped it to him, he just held it, they called timeout, blew the whistle, took him out. That or one of them, just a quick something. Give them their moment of the, you know, going through the starting five and have that. And I love them, but maybe not more than just a quick. If I'm Walker, though, and I'm starting, if I get the ball, I'm cranking it. I don't care if I'm half court. I am cranking it. Here we go. But it is Florida. I mean, this is like, you know, this is a game where I don't know that you can give up very many points because they're going to score a lot as it is. They've averaged 109 points the last two games. Yeah. Just to give you an idea. Here's what we do. You start them. If Florida wins the tip, just commit a quick foul. Okay. I like that. If Kentucky wins the tip, Walker gets one shot. And then foul. Jack won three. And if he hits it, he stays in. So what do we think Mark's going to do, though? That's an interesting question because Mark seems like the kind of guy who really respects the tradition and would want to have that moment. Do you think they'd do it? I'm trying to think, did Cal do it with, like, Sam Malone and Brian Long? I think he did. I think he did, yeah. We were also beating teams by, like, 50 that year, so it wasn't as big of a deal. And we weren't planning to try to stay out of Wednesday of the SEC tournament. I mean, that's true. Well, let's talk about that. I mean, this has got to be one of the biggest last games of the season that I can remember. I mean, I'm sure we've probably had one or two over the years, Ryan, that have been for the championship. But when you look at the discrepancy between – I mean, if we win, a double bye is definitely on the table because we need, like, Arkansas to beat Missouri, which you think they probably would, and we need Vandy to beat Tennessee, which is certainly plausible, and then you're a four seed. But if you lose and then what it looks like is going to happen happens, you're a nine seed and you're playing on Wednesday. So I can't remember a time the game's meant this much. I'm more anxious about this game for our postseason than I am when, like you said, you're playing for a championship. You win it, you win the title. Most of those years we're already secure that double bye. But for this one to have such that variation of playing on Wednesday night or a double bye on Friday, I think I'm more anxious for this game than I've been in a long time. If they lose this game tomorrow, they need a lot of help from Mississippi State to beat Georgia. Yeah, so KSR did a really good job of the website of listing all the possibilities. And if we lose, the highest we can be is an eight. If we lose, the most likely scenario is a nine, and probably the second most likely scenario is a ten. So if we lose, I think Shannon's right. We really need Mississippi State to beat Georgia, and then I think we need Oklahoma to beat Texas, both of which are not necessarily certain. So, Drew, I mean, a loss, and we're packing up and heading Wednesday probably. Or if you're in the 1130 game, heading Tuesday. That could still be on the table. If you're the first, if you're the nine, that's the first Wednesday game. Wednesday game, yeah. Well, no, I mean, you mean to play. Yeah, but I mean, the fans would probably need to be there Tuesday night or up very early Wednesday because you could be playing before noon local time in Nashville. Have we ever been an underdog on senior day ever? Who did we play last year? Auburn. See, look right there. That boy, Andy. Andy knows ball. Andy knew. Probably a couple times. But I don't know that we've been an underdog by this much in a long time. Now, the women, real quick, the women play at noon. This show will do the thing we did at 1045. We'll actually do it at 1145 since the game's at noon. So you'll lose 15 minutes. Play South Carolina. That was a big win for them yesterday. Women's bracketology has now moved Kentucky to a four and hosting in the first and second round. So Michigan State and us were competing for the last hosting seed. Michigan State lost yesterday. Kentucky won, so they moved us above them. So I think as long as, Drew, they play well today, they got a really good shot of being able to host in the first and second round, which would be huge for them. Heck, yeah, and I don't think Dawn Staley slept last night after Clara Strack had 33 points and hit five threes in that game. I looked it up. She hadn't had a three since January and went five for seven yesterday. I know she's the worst superstar Kenny Brooks has ever coached, but a hell of a game yesterday. Let's talk about that, Shannon. Kenny Brooks said before the SEC tournament, said Clara Strack is a superstar. I've coached a handful of superstars in my life, but she's the worst superstar I've ever coached, which I read that quote and I was like, whoa. since then she's been dominant right now if the tournament ended today she'd be the sec tournament mvp you think that was a good motivational tool to say you're the worst superstar i've ever that was great psychology on kenny brooks part to do that is it's sort of like a back-end compliment because you're calling me the worst but you're also calling me a superstar at the same time whatever he said clearly it worked and he knows how to motivate his players i saw an interview with her we listened on the way back yesterday and in the interview she said that's my relationship with ship with him and i wanted to prove him wrong so it looks like it worked yeah she came with him from virginia tech they've been together now for three years when i first heard that i thought man that would it would motivate me he would tick me off my coach called me the worst superstar he's ever had i'm gonna go out and show him and by god she did it yes that's what it's important to know the personality of your players some people wouldn't respond to that absolutely right and uh And she did. Who's up next? Daniel is up next. Daniel. Go ahead, Daniel. Yo, Matt, everybody, shout out to you guys. I want to go over something that was kind of brushed over yesterday, and that's Ryan's big date tonight. Yeah, that is a good point. Ryan, so explain what you're going to tonight. Well, Matt, this is an exciting night, and it happens in the mecca of entertainment, Somerset, Kentucky. We're driving down to Somerset, and at 6 o'clock going to the old Virginia Theater, for an Edgar Allen Pole speakeasy night. I guess they're going to break down and perform different Edgar Allen Pole short stories. Well, do you know what a speakeasy is? Yeah. That's like you're supposed to know how to get in and it's hidden. This sounds like it's a ticketed event. It is ticketed, but they're going to make it like it's a speakeasy. You've got to probably knock on a door, know a password. There's going to be some crazy stuff, special drinks. You think you have to knock on a door and know a password? I think so. Do you know the password? Not yet, but I'm going to find out. Do you know any Edgar Allen Poe stories? Yeah, what's your favorite Edgar Allen Poe story? Well, quote the Raven, never more. Oh, wait a minute, sir. You said you know the password? I'm one of the performers tonight, actually. Oh. Okay. All right. Well, so what is it he's going to see? Because he clearly doesn't know. He's on the right track. So we are four performers. You got to make it quick, sir. Quickly. We're performing four stories with themed cocktails that go with each story. The password tonight is Mommy Swamy. Yes. All right, I appreciate the call. So you're excited. I hope when we get to the pregame show tomorrow at 1.30, I hope you give us some your favorite egg round call. I'm so excited. I got up this morning and shaved my goatee off. I got to be clean, shaven, and fresh for the big date tonight. You never know about what happened. Bow chicka, pow, pow. It's always just one step too far. You're not going to wear that T-shirt, are you? Paul Miller Ford's giving me a hoodie. I might wear my Paul Miller Ford hoodie to the big date tonight. I think I would change. This is a story about a horrendous lie that destroyed two families. Late one night, Bobby Gumpright became the victim of a random crime. He pulls the gun, tells me to lie down on the ground. He identified Jermaine Hudson as the perpetrator. Jermaine was sentenced to 99 years. I'm like, Lord, this can't be real. I thought it was a mistaken identity. The best lie is partial truth. For 22 years, only two people knew the truth until a confession changed everything. I was a monster. Listen to Burden of Guilt Season 2 on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. changes overnight. I hate fame. I hate the word celebrity. One person writes, Matt, did Ryan say Edgar Allen Pohl? He did. That may be my Otwell accent, Edgar Allen Pohl. Yeah. Also, Shannon said he thought that would be a good stripper name. It would be. Absolutely. I actually think that's probably true. We are here at Paul Miller Ford, longstanding tradition of partnering with the University of Kentucky coaches and athletes. This has been a great remote here with all the giveaways and the players. The problem is as soon as we announced free food, I knew what would happen. You lose the crowd for 10 or 15 minutes. Everybody gets it. But we're back and ready to rock. Text machine is 772-774-5254. UK baseball got some good news. Tyler Bell is cleared to come back. You know, Drew, we didn't even know if he's going to come back all season and he'll be back now before SEC play. Yeah, hoping to get a look at him this weekend. Definitely by SEC play. But when that happened in the first game of the year, What were they, Greenville, Greensboro? Yeah. Not Lexington. Just the reaction and listen to the broadcast. I mean, I think everyone thought this was going to be a long-term injury, maybe not even see him this season. So, excellent to have him here in the first week of March before you even get to SEC. Yeah, I think he's supposed to possibly be on the field this weekend, for the series this weekend. It starts today. So, I think they're just going to use him as a DH. Yeah, just get a bat. Get him a couple of at-bats, get ready for conference play that starts next week. One person writes, Matt, I have a scoop that you can say on KSR and then you'll be breaking it to the world. Wow. Ooh, can't wait for this. I'm not endorsing this scoop, but we will keep it in the back of our minds. 4-2-4 is the area code. All right. Well, I know what that is. Sounds trustworthy. My scoop is Bill Self is retiring after the season. Just keep in mind that I said it, and you will know I have inside sources. All right, there you go. All right. They got tossed out the other night. They turned on the smoke machine as he was walking through. What happened? They got thrown out of the game. Oh, that was great timing. He set up the smoke. Yeah, right in the space as he got kicked out. Yeah. By the way, big night of basketball tonight because there's a lot of, you know, conference tournaments. I think the OVC semifinals are on ESPNU. But my question for you, Miami of Ohio playing to go undefeated. They are at Ohio. Miami of Ohio has not won at Ohio in 15 years. But if they win tonight, they will go undefeated. Do you want to see them go undefeated? Would you watch? Because I think it's on ESPN2 getting a good TV thing. Would you want to see it happen? I want to see it happen. I want to see them go undefeated just to keep that excitement. In a small conference, I grew up in a small conference, small school. Transylvania, they're playing tonight. You pull for those small schools. I don't think that's exactly the same thing. Miami of Ohio going undefeated and Transylvania is playing. Shout out to Transy, though. Heard Brian Lane this morning. Yeah, I heard him on the Leach Report. But, yeah. Are you a trancy guy? All right, let's go Pioneers. Are they playing here? No, it's in St. Louis, I think. Let's go Ian Reeser. Yeah, but are you rooting for Miami of Ohio? I am. I think it would be cool for them to go undefeated. I want them to get into the tournament. I do not think they should be in if they lose in the conference tournament, but I hope they go undefeated and get in there. But I will say if this is the team that beats them, you know, we've been in that Ohio arena just a couple years ago. I had a great time, loved being in Ohio. So if one team is going to do it, I would be excited for them having been that. I hope they win tonight but then lose in the conference tournament so then it puts the pressure on the selection committee and watch people lose their mind. So the New York Times, I thought this was interesting, requested proof that Miami of Ohio tried to schedule good teams, asked them for all correspondence that showed they tried to schedule good teams, and they produced 20 letters with major conference teams asking for a game and getting turned down. They were turned down for every one of them. Does that make a difference to you if they lose in the conference tournament, if they tried their best to play good teams and good teams would not play them? 20, you say. There's 20. I would say there's 80 other teams in the top 100 you couldn't reach out to. But they reached out. They knew the top teams wouldn't play them. So they reached out to, like, Pitt. I think Vandy was one of the teams that turned them down. Oklahoma State. So they reached and just kept getting no's. Does that make a difference to you if they tried and still didn't get it? If they legitimately tried to, then I guess their hands are tied in that situation. What do you want them to do? But they could play at least teams that are a little bit better than the ones they played in the 300s and high 200s. What about you? I think they're still going to play a better schedule. It definitely makes a difference for me because I'm pulling for them anyway. Even if they get beat, I still think if they go undefeated in the regular season, they need to get in. This, I think, solidifies their argument. and I'm glad if the New York Times actually kind of put that out there. Is there some sort of union to, like, go against Miami, Ohio, to not schedule them? Well, I mean, so this is one of the – you know, you notice when Kentucky played this year, when we played bad teams, we played horrible teams. That's what's going to happen. So the way the NCAA tournament things works, if you remember back when Tubby was here, You got a lot of credit for playing good teams like the Belmonts of the world, even if you lost. That's not how it is now. Now it's about how much you beat teams by. And so, like, Alabama put up a scheduling thing. There's a bulletin board where you can say you need a team. And Alabama said, we want to play somebody, but you have to be ranked 250th or worse for us to play you. Because the incentive now is to play the bad teams and then beat the crap out of them. you get more credit for that than if you beat Belmont by six. So then the NCAA essentially created this scenario. The NCAA has created this scenario. And now it's going to be interesting to see will they keep that team out. I totally agree with you. They have to fix it. I read this story. It's supposed to be about Miami of Ohio, but they basically uncovered teams will only play quad one or quad fours. And if you're quad two or quad three, they ignore you. You can't get a game. It's not worth the risk because you mentioned one. There were several examples of schools like we want to buy a game. You can't be ranked this. You pretty much got to suck. And if you sign players that makes you projected good, they cancel the contract. Wow. So, I mean, it is kind of interesting. By the way, I don't know where she went. Miss Kentucky is here as well, too. We want to give a big round of applause to Miss Kentucky over there with the sissy cakes. I don't think she can hear me, but glad to have her. All right, who's next? Got Will up next. Will, got a minute. Go ahead, Will. Wow, appreciate it guys Big last week for you Honestly, peak radio Peak sports radio It's been incredible to watch But I do wanted to say UK is winning against Florida Maybe even by double digits UK is going to beat South Carolina Women's basketball tomorrow Oh that would be great, well today It's not tomorrow, they got to beat them today Oh it is today What time is that game actually? It's at noon It's peak sports radio, but he missed where I said that earlier in the second. No, I'm kidding with you. Go ahead. Quickly, Will. I was on hold. I was just wanting to say, guys, I really just wanted to call in and see you guys have killed it this week, and I've loved paying attention. Well, thank you very much, Will. I think the Cavs are winning. Winning by 10. That's my hot take. I hope you're right. I think they may as well. All right, we'll take a break and be right back. This is Kentucky Sports Radio.
