Summary

Evening Wire covers Vice President Vance's diplomatic mission to Pakistan for Iran negotiations, new inflation data showing a 0.9% monthly increase driven by oil prices, and controversy surrounding the Dignidad Act immigration bill that critics say amounts to amnesty for 12 million undocumented immigrants.

Insights
  • Iran negotiations face significant preconditions (ceasefire in Lebanon, asset unfreezing) that could derail talks before they begin, with U.S. maintaining military contingency plans
  • Oil price spikes are creating dual economic pressures: inflation concerns and GDP growth headwinds, making Strait of Hormuz access critical to Trump administration economic strategy
  • Conservative backlash against the Dignidad Act reveals internal Republican divisions on immigration policy, with some viewing proposed solutions as insufficiently restrictive
  • Government workforce recruitment is shifting toward non-traditional talent pools (gamers for air traffic control) as agencies face significant staffing shortages
  • Prediction market activity around geopolitical events is creating insider trading concerns, prompting White House staff warnings

A U.S. delegation led by Vice President Vance heads to Pakistan for Iran negotiations, new inflation numbers come in hot, and a new immigration bill called the Dignidad Act draws major backlash from conservatives. I'm Georgia Howe with Daily Wire Executive Editor John Bickley. It's Friday, April 10th, and this is Evening Wire. Vice President Vance arrives in Pakistan today for talks Vice President Vance arrives in Pakistan today for talks and the situation is precarious. Vance spoke to reporters briefly on the tarmac before boarding the plane for Pakistan. We're looking forward to the negotiation. I think it's going to be positive. We'll of course see. As the President of the United States said, if the Iranians are willing to negotiate in good faith, we're certainly willing to extend the open hand. If they're going to try to play us, then they're going to find that the negotiating team is not that receptive. The talks are slated for tomorrow in Pakistan with the U.S. delegation led by the Vice President. But the negotiations are already facing a few hurdles. Iranian officials are demanding a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of frozen assets before talks can even start. President Trump expressed skepticism about Tehran's messaging, saying, Iran tells U.S. negotiators one thing and then the media another. Trump says the U.S. is actively re-arming warships as a contingency plan, warning that if talks with Iran fail, those weapons will be used very effectively. The new inflation numbers are in and they're not great. Inflation last month increased by 0.9 percent, almost entirely due to the spike in oil prices. It's the highest increase in three years. Daily Wire senior editor Joel Needler has the numbers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that the index for energy rose nearly 11 percent in March, led by a 21 percent increase in the index for gasoline. The economists had been bracing for the inevitable bad news because of the Iran conflict, so it certainly wasn't unexpected and actually less dire than some had feared. But the data point, combined with a downward revision of the Q4 GDP from 2025 to just 0.5 percent, is yet more incentive for the Trump administration to get the Strait of Hormuz fully opened. As for that downward revision for GDP last quarter, we talked with economist Patrick Hurran about what drove that. He said it was mostly the government shutdown. The first estimate, which came out in January, said GDP grew at 1.4 percent, which is not too bad, but it's been revised down to 0.5 percent, which is pretty low. What have that fall has to do with the government shutdown that we saw back in the last fall? Even if you subtract the government sector from GDP, there's another metric called real final sales to private domestic purchasers. That metric also fell to a rate that's not as scary, 1.8 percent. Around 2 percent is fine. So again, the GDP numbers as a whole were not great. I wouldn't quite quick hit the panic button just yet though. The Trump administration is inching closer to deporting anti-Israel activist Mahmoud Khalil. An appeals board has ordered the removal of Khalil, a green card holder tied to anti-Israel protests, rejecting his bid to dismiss the case. Khalil, who was arrested by ICE last year, denies wrongdoing and says he's being targeted for his speech. But the Trump administration argues his activities align with U.S. designated terrorist interests and pose foreign policy concern. He remains in the U.S. for now as his legal fight continues in federal court. The Trump administration is betting on gamers to fill the massive hole in the air traffic control system. It's not a game, it's a career, says an ad released Friday by the Federal Aviation Administration. The video blends images from airports with popular video games such as Fortnite. Foreign Secretary Sean Duffy told The New York Times that the administration wants gamers to apply because they quote, have many of the hard skills it takes to be a successful controller. The FAA currently has around 11,000 air traffic controllers on staff, short of its target of over 14,600. The hiring window will open April 18th and will be capped at 8,000 applicants. Those accepted stand to make an average salary of $155,000 after three years. An immigration bill called the Dignidad Act that's being put forward by Florida Republican Maria Salazar is getting blowback for being what critics say is just another thinly veiled amnesty bill. Texas Congressman Brandon Gill appeared on Wired and Live hosted by Morning Wire regular Cabot Phillips and blasted the bill this week. This is an amnesty bill plain and simple. What it does is it gives legal status to about 12 million illegal aliens. Not only that, but it says that it effectively stops the president from deporting illegal aliens. The Justice Department opened an investigation into the NFL over potential anti-competitive practices and harm to consumers as the league licenses more games to streaming networks. Daily Wire reporter Zach Jule has the details. One government official told CBS News that the probe is focused on quote, affordability for consumers and creating an even playing field for providers. The investigation comes as NFL fans and some lawmakers have raised concerns about the increasing cost to watch games as the league licenses more games to streaming platforms such as Netflix, Prime Video and Peacock. But the NFL said on Thursday that its quote, media distribution model is the most fan and broadcaster friendly in the entire sports and entertainment industry. The league added quote, with over 87% of our games on free broadcast television including 100% of games in the markets of the competing teams, the NFL has for decades put our fans front and center in how we distribute our content. The league office says the 2025 season was the most viewed since 1989. Protesters in Ireland have been taking over the streets demanding that the government step in to lower fuel costs. Multiple days this week, protesters in cities across Ireland have deliberately clogged up thoroughfares and motorways with parked trucks and tractors. As reported by Reuters, convoys of vehicles began converging on Dublin City Center and other towns and cities on Tuesday. The protesters, including haulers and farmers, are complaining that a $250 million dollar Euro package to cut taxes on petrol and diesel for the short term does not go far enough. So far officials have said they would not agree to the protesters' demands to meet with them because they don't belong to official representative groups. Argentina's president Javier Malay has eased Argentina's environmental restrictions to open up massive new mining opportunities. Many of Argentina's vast copper deposits have been untouched since a 2010 law banned mining at or near glaciers. Mining executives have often criticized the law, which they say was broad and unclearly written, shutting down nearly all mining in the country, not just near glaciers. President Malay struck a major legislative victory on Thursday by removing the national restrictions. Regional authorities will now have the power to decide which areas need to remain protected and which to open up to mining. The White House has warned its staff not to place bets on prediction markets amid the conflict with Iran. Daily Wire Assistant Editor Andy Valdes has the story. In a staff-wide email from the White House Management Office on March 24, staffers were warned against improperly using their inside knowledge of Trump's actions to bet in futures markets. As reported by The Wall Street Journal, the warning came a day after Trump announced on Truth Social an unexpected pause of strikes against Iran. They wrote, quote, about 15 minutes before the sudden shift in policy, a mysterious flurry of activity kicked off in the futures markets. As a result, more than $760 million worth of oil futures contracts changed hands in less than two minutes. A new rule that will go into effect by the end of this year automatically registers eligible young men for the draft. The Selective Service System submitted the rule last week. Currently, young men are expected to self-register, but 46 states already have laws that auto-register men when they apply for a driver's license or state ID. Those who fail to register could face a $250,000 fine or five years in prison. Congress approved the new Automatic Registration in the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act. And the Artemis II crew is set to splash down to Earth tonight. Daily Wire reporter Lyndon Blake has the latest. The Orion will wrap up their 10-day, 685,000-mile mission today after traveling farther than any human has ever traveled in space. But the most dangerous part of the trip happens tonight. Re-entry will send the capsule hurling through Earth's atmosphere at nearly 25,000 miles an hour, with temperatures reaching around 5,000 degrees. Everything depends on the heat shield and a precise angle of descent. Too steep and the capsule burns up. Too shallow and it could skip off the atmosphere entirely. After the fiery descent, parachutes will deploy to slow the capsule for its splashdown off the California coast, where recovery crews will be waiting. If successful, Artemis II will mark a major milestone, bringing NASA one step closer to landing astronauts back on the moon later this decade. All right, those are your drive home updates. To learn more about these stories, go to DailyWire.com. And in case you missed it earlier today, we covered some major stories, including the ceasefire being tested ahead of the looming peace talks with Iran, the Artemis II crew preparing to splash down to Earth tonight, and Trump stepping in to save college sports.
