5-Star Recruits Got The FULL Coach O Experience at LSU
LSU hired former head coach Ed Orgeron as special assistant for recruiting and defense, immediately deploying him during a major recruiting weekend with four 5-star prospects. Orgeron's authentic coaching style and Louisiana connections generated massive social media buzz and earned media value.
- Hiring former successful coaches in specialized roles can generate significant earned media value that exceeds their salary costs
- Authentic, passionate leadership resonates strongly in recruitment and can create viral content that amplifies brand reach
- Strategic timing of personnel moves around key events maximizes impact and return on investment
- Social media documentation by recruits themselves provides more credible and far-reaching promotion than institutional content
- Regional cultural knowledge and relationships remain invaluable assets in competitive recruitment scenarios
"This was Saturday when we walked out this field going, that kick some ass. You guys got that? Yeah, baby."
"The undeniable superpower that Ed Orgeron has. He is a great defensive line coach and he is an elite recruiter."
"Could you imagine anything more authentic and genuine than that?"
"You've probably already made that you've already. He's already earned that salary just in the impressions from this one weekend"

It's a massive recruiting weekend and the Ed Ogeron effect is real. We'll explain. Locked on lsu. Here we go. You are Locked on lsu, your daily podcast on the LSU Top Tigers, part of the Locked On Podcast network. Your team every day. Okay, let's get it. It is Locked on lsu, your team every day. I'm your host, Matt Moscone. Lsu, as we detailed in a previous episode, hosting four five stars and six recruits overall on official visits this weekend. And the newly minted special assistant for recruiting and defense, Ed Ogeron. Yes, the former LSU head coach is also already making his presence felt. Now I want to take you back to earlier this week when Lane Kiffin was at SEC spring meetings, his first public comment since hiring Ed Ogeron, or should I say rehiring Ed Ogeron, as he previously hired him in both Tennessee and Southern Cal. And Kojo is now back at LSU, of course, where he won the national championship in 2019 as the head coach of the Tigers. This is what Lane Kiffin said earlier this week about the decision to bring Ed Ogeron back.
0:43
It's a unique situation because having knowing him from before and working with him and then to he was already living there, you know, he moved back up there. And so it's something we had talked about a little bit throughout it and it just seemed like the perfect time to bring him back, you know. And, you know, we talked for a number of days about it and to figure out exactly what it was. And I feel awesome about it because, you know, I feel the comfort of having him on the staff. Shoot, 17 years ago, we here as the Tennessee coach, you know, and, you know, knowing that when he's on your staff, certain things are taken care of, you know, he's not in that same role he used to be. But to bring him back to LSU and you know, with the expanded number of people to recruit, you know that can go on the road, you know that that's a tremendous value anywhere, let alone in the state of Louisiana. So I'm excited about it, let alone
2:28
in the state of Louisiana. Because if we're being honest, there is nobody on this staff that knows the state, the people, the culture of Louisiana and what it means to be an LSU Tiger than at Ozron. So and the the one thing that I'd push back with Lane saying there is when he said yeah, it was the perfect timing, I could suggest that maybe the perfect timing would have been to bring him back before spring. So you could have had Edozeron working on field with these guys in spring. But nevertheless, bringing him back the week before these official visits, that makes sense too. I mentioned there are four, five stars on campus this weekend, headlined by Jaylen Brewster. Now, wasting no time, Jaylen Brewster, the number one player in the country who happens to be a defensive tackle, is seen photoed in a photo that's making its rounds around social media with Ed Odron at Mike the Tiger's cage. The other premier prospect, of course, is Easton Royal, five star number one receiver in America, current Texas commit out of Brother Martin in New Orleans. Easton Royal as he shows up on his official visit, seen in a photo with none other than Ed Ozron. Of course, because this is just what LSU is doing, Edo's role on this staff is the special assistant for defense and recruiting. Naturally you have a massive recruiting weekend you are going to take advantage of having at Oon and my goodness, did they ever. So if you have not yet seen this making the rounds, remember Jaylen Brewster is the number one player in the country. He's 63, 300 pounds. He's a defensive tackle. So on the interior of the defensive line he's currently committed to Texas Tech. Kevin People's LSU's defensive tackle coach has already been to Cedar Hill to visit with with Jaylen Brewster. But Edo Jeron clearly is doing his best to try to get to get Jalen Brewster to flip. Check out this video of Ed Odron working with Jalen Brewster on technique on this official visit. Okay, so Edo's like Jalen Brewster is on an official visit. By the way, if you're listening to this episode on podcast, it may behoove you for this episode to go find us on YouTube. Of course. Locked on. LSU is on pot on all your podcast app and on YouTube. So please subscribe. And some of you may have already seen the video, but for those who are listening, not watching, Ed Ozeron and Brewster are somewhere in town that might be court to table, quite honestly, the pickleball place, but they're under a covered patio somewhere and, and, and someone's taking a video. And Ed Ogeron is like engaging with Brewster and working with him on, on body control and balance and some technique with how to get off and engage. I mean, an official visit typically is you go to an ice steak restaurant, they let you wear the uniform, you do your photo shoots, you know, you, you go around the campus, you get your tour guide, you've got a current player on the team, that's your guy that maybe takes you out in town or whatever the case may be like. And Odron's got this guy working on defensive line techniques and one of his family members in there videoing it. By the way, that video, if you want to see it, is on Jalen Brewster's Instagram. Now this one, though, is the showstopper. Again, if you're listening, not watching, you may want to go find us on YouTube. You'll be able to hear this. But a quick description is, this is the point of the tour of Tiger Stadium, where Ed Ozron is bringing the recruits and their families through the locker room through the tunnel. If you've never been in the tunnel in Tiger Stadium, the locker room enter, enters into a tunnel that goes to the double do doors with the wind bar above it that enters straight into this, the. The north end zone of Tiger Stadium. So the, the van. And this is. Jalen Brewster posted this on his. This is the five star number one player in America posted this on his Instagram feed. So you can go watch it there if you want. But it's. It runs about two minutes. But it's Ed Ozeron basically giving, not basically giving an explanation and a hype speech to not only the recruits, remember their families are with them as well on this official visit. So it's this, this, this pile of people, maybe about 50 or so, it's the recruits and their families crowding up right there by the double doors, about to touch the wind bar and go onto the field in Tiger State. And the doors are closed and Ed Ozeron gives them a speech. This was, this was Saturday when we

walked out this field going, that kick some ass. You guys got that? Yeah, baby. Now, look, we walk out of here, we hit that, Everybody got it? We open it up, there's102,000 screaming LSU fans waiting on you. Watch. Break it. Get ready for, for. And guess what? Mom and Daddy sitting your family right over the 50 yard line waiting to watch you make that big play. Everybody got that? All right, now listen up. Get a little tighter.
8:08
We.
8:32
Hey, we're not tight enough. One team, one heartbeat. Everybody. Come on, come on, come on. Everybody back there. Let's go. Hey, if you scared, say you scared back. Let's go. Y. Y' all want to be in here? No. Got one team, one heartbeat. Now listen up. And we got a little ritual throughout the day. Man, we had to be breathless. We call our recruits. You guys go rest. We have meetings. We get down the bus, and all of a sudden it's time to go. If I got that. Now listen up. You're gonna report to me. You can have one unbuckled, and we're all gonna strap up. And it's gonna be the best sound in football. Y the LSU Tigers going to warm together. Everybody understand that? You guys like that? Okay, I want everybody to practice now. On three, I want you to go like that. One, two, three. Man, that sound good. Now listen, when we go through the goal post, there's condition here. You run through the goal post, then we're round. Everybody got that? Yeah, baby. Let's go. Yeah. And we undefeated. We win tonight. We're going to college football playoffs. Let's go. Get it down. Let's go. Best out of football. When I do this on my head. LSU Tigers going to war. Everybody's clapping up. I'm on there. Let's go. Best side of football. LSU Tigers go to war. One, two, three.
8:32
I mean, he is a one of one. Could you imagine anything more authentic and genuine than that? Listen, we can have whatever conversation you want about Ed O. On the head coach. The undeniable truth. I said it a week ago when Lane Kiffin hired him. I said it six months ago when they were talking about hiring him. I said it six years ago when he was hired as the head girl. I guess more than six years now, when he was hired as the head coach. The undeniable superpower that Ed Ogeron has. He is a great defensive line coach and he is an elite recruiter. And you saw, we all got to see a glimpse of it there with how Ed o' Jon not only is handling top prospects, but also their families right there, unapologetically authentic. And I don't know how you could not be fired up watching that if you're a recruit or a family member standing right there as Edo's ornament, who won a national championship with that school, is leading you through the tunnel. Now, I do want to sort of put some context because it's one thing to have that video, put it on social media and people watch it. A lot of LSU fans, of course, are going to gobble that up, but what is the net effect of something like that? I want to dive into that next. It's locked in lsu, your team every day. for a Reese's so Ed Ozron fires up recruits. LSU fans are lapping it up, seeing all over social media Coacho pose it wearing the LSU colors again, the logo again, posing with five star recruits, taking these videos, popping up on Twitter and Instagram and all these social media feeds. I mean but what actually is the value of that? So that's sort of the question. And I look at it like this. Does LSU desperately want Jalen Brewster to flip from Texas Tech to lsu? Absolutely. Does LSU desperately want to flip Easton Royal from Texas to LSU? Of course they do. Abraham C say 5 far 5 star edge from Pennsylvania uncommitted. Does LSU want him? Of course they do. You're looking at this Xavier sab, number one five star athlete in the country on campus this weekend as well. Do they want to get him down from Jersey to be an part of this LSU class? Of course they do. But even if LSU doesn't land these prospects, the way that I think about what's happening this weekend is something that in, in. In marketing is the combination or comparison of paid media and earned media. Let me explain what that means. Now you may, you may know, especially if you own a business or do any marketing. So paid media, okay, is what you spend to buy advertising to get your name brand message in front of people. Be it advertising on a podcast, YouTube channel, television, radio, newspaper, social media, whatever, that's paid media. You create some sort of content and then you put your ad, you pay to get your ad in front of people. It's paid media, okay? Earned media is organic reach that you get as a result of your name brand content. Whatever the case, may be something you did not pay for that gets in front of other people. The best examples that I can, I can maybe give you recently certainly would resonate with LSU fans. Think about those. Let's talk about the 2019 football team. The 2019 national champions had those hype videos that dropped every week before the games, right? And those became almost as anticipated as the, as, as the games, quite honestly. And they went, they started doing millions of views and you start, it became such a cultural thing that you started a list celebrities voice and narrate them for free. I mean, Anthony Mackie, the Rock, Lil Wayne, I mean, you had a list celebrities voicing these LSU hype videos because it was a cool thing they wanted to be part of that's earned media. You did millions of dollars, you, you did millions of dollars worth of impressions and brand and reach without paying for it. The other I would tell you was the, I mean there's plenty of them. But the LSU women's basketball national championship was unlike really anything that I had seen right in that, that one moment where Angel Reese does the you can't see me to Caitlin Clark. That went so mega viral. It was a lightning rod moment that earned LSU untold millions, almost immeasurable millions in earned media. This is the way that I say it. If you remember after that championship game, the net that became such a massive story. I mean the White House was talking about it then First Lady Jill Biden mentioned maybe inviting Caitlin Clark in Iowa to the, the White House as well for the champions. I mean, it went Everywhere it was, it was transcendent. It wasn't just sports channels, it was news. It was everywhere internationally. And that right there put the LSU brand logo, everything, in front of millions upon millions of people. A week later, Saturday Night Live did an episode during Weekend Update where Punky Johnson, a comedian who happens to be from Louisiana, basically went on Weekend Update as Angel Reese wearing an LSU women's basketball jersey as Angel Reese. And, and the thing that I've said is you cannot, with any sum of money go to 30 Rock, go to the NBC studios and say, we would like to buy a segment on Weekend Update. There's no company in the world, no business, no brand that could, that could go to NBC and say, we would like to buy a segment on weekends or about advertising like a commercial. I mean, to be on Weekend Update in the show, you can't, you literally cannot buy it. And LSU got it for free. LSU got Punky Johnson wearing an LSU women's basketball jersey on Weekend Updates or an SNL for free after the angel racing. That's earned media, right? That's where things start to pay for themselves. And you think of the fact that lsu, on its, its line item on the budget for Ed Ogeron, his salaries, his base is 100 grand. Now, I've talked about this before. Ed Ogeron, as I understand, is going to make more than a hundred thousand dollars, similar to other coaches, how they have their base and then maybe they're paid by Taft or the collective or something like that. So Ed's base that, that will be on the LSU budget coming out of the LSU athletics budget is a hundred thousand, but he's going to make more than that from Taff of the collective, like however they supplement, which is a very common thing, but, but nonetheless, that 100 grand, you've probably already made that you've already, you, you have already. He's already earned that salary just in the impressions from this one weekend that's not even over yet. When you think about, you know, if I go to Twitter or X and search Ed Ogeron right now and this, this video of that we just played Yvette Ogeron in the. The Locker Begin, that's on Jalen Brewster's Instagram. Well, there have been a bunch of different accounts that have ripped it from Instagram and posted it on X. I mean, it's been, it's been less than half a day and it's already over. You're already talking about over millions of impressions already in half a day on that one piece of content. So that in connection with the photos, the video of Edo drawn on Jalen Brewster's Instagram doing the, the, the, the, the. The defensive line drills, all of that combined is giving LSU so much reach and brand awareness that typically on recruiting weekends is reserved just for a fan base, right? Like if, if you're a fan of the Florida Gators and they have official visitors this weekend and they're putting out the photos of the official, of the recruit in the uniform and they're putting it from their account while the fans are gobbling that up. But other fan bases don't care. I mean, other fan bases aren't looking at that. Every fan base is going to see the video of Ed Oon doing the hype speech in the LSU locker room before they go into the wind bar. Because the number one player in the country had his camera out, recorded it posted, now everybody's going to see it and they're going to see Coach Hill walk those recruits and their families through the thing we just talked about. That is invaluable. That is where Ed Ogeron is already, already earning a salary on multiples at this point. And that's why at a place like lsu, it is. It is his natural habitat. It's an undeniable truth that the, the two. His two superpowers, defensive line recruiting, he can maximize at a place like lsu that is deep, genuine love for the state, the people that embrace him as well. So Ed Oon, one week on campus, already making a massive impact. Now we'll see if they can close and get the flip done with Brewster Royal. Maybe they can land SAB or C.
