Insights
  • Near-death experiences can serve as catalysts for creative ambition and life purpose, fundamentally shifting an artist's approach to their craft and connection with audiences
  • Mental health practices like meditation, exercise, and positive affirmations are essential for artists navigating the pressures of the music industry and modern divisive society
  • Authentic storytelling rooted in personal struggle (relationship challenges, childhood experiences) creates stronger emotional resonance with audiences than surface-level content
  • Media training and public speaking development are critical gaps for emerging artists who have strong creative abilities but lack communication confidence
  • Independent artists benefit from strategic partnerships with agencies and radio platforms to amplify their reach and credibility in competitive music markets

People, right now you are live inside of the 99.7 The Heat Miami studios, officially powered by iHeartRadio. Make sure that you download the iHeartRadio app and type in 99.7 The Heat, D-A-H-E-A-T Miami. We have been a part of the iHeartRadio family for approximately going on three years now. We do between 18 and 25,000 listeners per month on our station. We play some of the most amazing music in the game from R&B, pop, hip hop, EDM and independent music. The Bidding Wars podcast is special because we think of the word bidding war. That means two entities, it could be more three or four, all bidding for the services or the talents of a particular entity, a person or a thing. Bidding wars have been going on for centuries and decades of time. people vying for the services and the talents of some of the most gifted people in music. Kalei was doing it all the time. When we created the Bidding Wars podcast, which we are the only Bidding Wars podcast, by the way, when we created this podcast, our whole purpose was to interview artists that we felt like were shifting the culture, creating music and visual optics that were really shaking the ground. And today is no different. I've been partners and working with RSG agency for a minute. I've always admired the vision of Dasha Wear. And anytime that we come together and she introduces a supreme talent, she always works for the best of the best, but anytime I work with one of the artists within the RSG culture, they always have a certain texture, a certain type of fabric to them. And today is no different. Speaking with a young king, young bull in this game that is truly betting on himself. He's definitely thinking outside the box. He's got fearless energy and undoubtedly his music is there on all levels. I'm honored, super honored to be having my brother, Ray Sterling on the Bidding Wars podcast. Ray, what's popping? Hey, blessings, blessings, man. How's it going, man? No doubt, man. You know how to give that big boy intro. I appreciate that, man. Thanks for having me on, man. No doubt about So let's jump right into it. When you stare into the mirror 2024, what do you see in yourself as a man, as an entrepreneur and as an artist in 2024? What do you see? I see a strong, strategic man trying to thrive for the betterment of the world. And the reason why I ask that question is because, you know, what you put on social media is one thing. But what you see, but what you how you feel about yourself behind the scenes matters a lot. And the reason why I bring that up, because when I was looking at your picture on your Spotify profile, your header picture up there, And you have a certain like determination in your eyes. Every picture you take, there's a certain level of focus and just sheer determination in your eyes, man. And I want to and that's what I see in you. There is something that is there's something that is driving. Break that down to the audience, man. Like what what is what is driving you to be this driven? message man it's the people the fans driving me to make make not only great music but make myself a better person throughout even in the 2024 it's just how can I say this there's so much that we've been going through since seriously since 2022 from COVID to politics just so much stuff that doesn't really make sense in this realm so when you and I would like for you to expound on that just for a second if you could so i sorry go ahead excuse me excuse my excuse my flatterness but as far as the word goes in my perception dealing with my past and the situations i've dealt with i really can only speak from what i've dealt with and people aren't that good in life so being the man that i am and going through the experiences I've experienced with not only friends, but close relatives and whatnot. Music is that box for me to express that type of outlet and get to the people in that way. Let me flip this question to you. When I said about what drives you, I want to know from you for the Bidding Wars audience, what happened, what triggered in your life to make you have this much fearless ambition about yourself in this creative space like what happened that flipped that switch for you well to get deep with it man um back in 2015 i was involved in a car crash which that crash i believe i passed away and came back to life and well ever since yeah ever since then my life's been really different being able to express myself has been different and being able to connect with different people has been different. Music has just been that outlet for me. People's childhood is very critical and crucial to their lives. Their childhood makes up a lot of their foundation, how they were raised, how they were treated, things they saw, the good, the bad, the ugly. Without going into too much detail that you may not want to, and you feel free to share what you want, but break down to the audience what type of childhood environment you grew up in. Were you raised by both your parents or somebody else or one i was raised by my mother and she was very loving great loved me a lot from there we had our brothers i have a sister and a young mother and middle child hold on one second bro your your phone's breaking up a little bit and you're i can hear you just you just was breaking up some go ahead all right yeah so i was saying i grew up with my mother and uh we had a She had an 11th family. She treated me right. Definitely. And from that perspective there, what was some of the lessons that you learned from your mom? Respect myself. Respect others. Treat others how you want to be treated. Never give up. Have hope. Believe. Stay a beautiful person. Stay honest and stay humble. Definitely. When coming up as a young child, what type of influence and impact did music have in your life? Like, what were some of the things that kind of, how did music play a role in that level? Well, it played a major role in my life. I started off as a percussionist in middle school and then went to playing for the jazz band and playing for the orchestra. And then in high school, went into the marching band. So music has been around my life for some time. yeah from the perspective of when did the shift happen like when did the shift happen when you say you know i'm gonna take music seriously like when did that happen around 2016 2017 feel like i would take it serious around this time yeah i can say yeah around this time i was uh visiting my father in california and me and my brother were basically first meeting and he did music he's actually from wanted to figure out how we can build a relationship quite honestly and it just thrived from there. When you and first of all thank you for just revealing that information let me go to it from another way regarding your childhood who were some of the people that really motivated you and were positive influences on you? People like my grandmother, my mother, I had a mentor at the time growing up by the name of joseph and i also funny thing is i actually was a boy scout so i would be around a lot of leadership things in the outdoor sense I a pretty unorthodox type of person From a creative space, you have a unique talent. Were there anyone, was there anyone, excuse me, that was musical in your family? Yeah, my grandmother on my father's side and my father as well. But yeah. I want to talk about your musical gift, but we're going to do a quick commercial real quick. And we're going to do a 60 second time interview highlighting one of our emerging artists inside of the underground music space. Devin Mill representing Yonkers, New York. Going to play a snippet of his record and shout out his IG. And we'll get right back into it. Here's Devin Mill. People bring it back. His Instagram handle is D-E-V-A-M-I-L underscore. He is the sponsor of today's podcast. our brother Devin Mill. He's an independent artist hailing out of Yonkers, New York. His Instagram handle again is D-E-V-A-M-I-L underscore. The name of the record is Bring It Back. All right, here we go. We're going to play 60 seconds of it. I want you to hit my brother on Instagram and let him know what you think about this. Bring it back. All right, people, that's Devin Mill. Bring it back. And on all streaming sites, you can pull up his name, D-E-V space A-M-I-L. He is an artist signed to All Money is Legal LLC. Devin Mill representing Yonkers New York. The name of the record is Bring It Back. His brother has over half a million legitimate streams on all DSPs, man. Red Sterling, what you thought of that record, man, by Devin Mill? I liked it. I messed with that record. No doubt about it, man. I'm going to jump right into it. And actually we're going to do a bit do a snippet of your record as well. So we're going to get in that just a second. But before we get into your record, I want to talk to you about your creative gifts because you are ultra talented. I'm a big fan of your creative works. I think psychologically you approach the game from a completely unorthodox way, which I love. When you walk into the studio and you put on those headphones, you get in that booth. Explain the difference between your government name and Red Sterling in that moment. difference between red sterling and in my government he has this type of charisma that's pretty much untouched and it's a certain type of power i like to call it it's a good healthy power that i use for the people for the fans that's what it's all for it's all the fans i want to tap in this part here when you think about you know creating music is a privilege It's a divine privilege because when you're creating music, you're literally are engineering soundtracks of people's lives because they're going to listen to you. They can potentially listen to your music forever. What goes through your mind when you are in the creating phase of your music? Like when you're creating a record, like visually, like what do you think about? how can I touch the fans in a positive light, but also give them my creativity as far as maneuvering the, how can I say this? As far as maneuvering the music base of it, I try to just dive into myself. Excuse my, excuse, I'm in the morning. So let me tap into this part. What is a significant advantage with your music? True understanding. I want to play a snippet of your record, Choose to Win, which is the record. By the way, that's that record. We're filling that record. We're through the phase right now, adding it to 99.7 to Heat Miami on iHeartRadio, bro. So look out for that. But this record right here, man, I want to play a snippet of your record, and then I got some questions, okay? Okay. so like you i mean your flow is super distinctive man highly unique bro like in that moment when you saying like when you saying what you saying tell me what going through your mind quite honestly i thinking about my last relationship and what I dealt with and saying that I choose to win I choose to be better than this and I'm worthy of the situation of this. And I want to express it. And I want the fans, whoever may be feeling the same way down when they're coming out of a situation or going into a situation that, you know, you should choose to win. in every situation. Definitely. Mental health is a big thing in today's world. You hear more and more people talking about it. It's tough to be, you know, working, living in this crazy world we live in. You know, like we live in a very divisive world and things are expensive and trying to make a living and you're trying to be an artist. How do you keep yourself mentally balanced so you don't, you know, get, be too dark? Like, how do you keep your energy positive in times like these? we in. I like to move. I also like to emphasize every day. That helps me. And yeah, that's pretty much where your phone call broke out. I was saying, yeah, that's where I find that medium, working out, meditating, having positive affirmations. Got it. Coming into 2025, I mean, it's going to be a new year in less than no time. I'm two and a half months. What are some things that you definitely want to get accomplished uh in 2025 that you have not done in 2025 well i definitely would like to grow on myself mentally be able to come back to a space where i can speak adherently coherently the way i want to and to the public the way i express myself through the music because i know it's all about the music and i also just want to keep on putting out music for the fans. What is one thing about you that people say, you know what, I love that about Red Star, my own condition on this. And what's one thing about yourself that you feel that you improve in order to be a better person? Being able to publicly speak to my fans so they can hear me the way I love them to hear me. So pretty much like media training, basically. Yes. All right, great, man. What have you enjoyed the most about being on the Billion Wars podcast today, bro? the wonderful questions you've been able to stick it stick it in there with me with my struggling words but i appreciate you man yeah well listen man it's only gonna get better for me we're gonna do more interviews media training we're gonna do all that this year man like i said before you know struggling i love struggle struggle for everybody struggles bro everybody because guess what everybody starts off at the bottom of the mountain somebody told me that a long time ago so that's real and that's real give out your instagram handle so people can follow you across all platforms Red Sterling.
