Hey everyone, this is David. Welcome back behind the velvet robe. Let's just get right into it today because we are joined by the one, the only, Evan Ross. Evan Ross, welcome, welcome. Or should I just say, Stingray is here in the house. How are you? Yeah, I'm good. I'm so good. You know, you've done so much in your career up to this point. What made you want to do the mass singer? I, you know what? I thought it was fun. I was excited to do it for a few different reasons. I love the idea that I could sing a lot of these songs that I grew up loving or something that I like now that no one would know it was me and I could just kind of have fun doing it. I love the show anyway and I'm really close friends with all the hosts. So I don't know. I just thought it would be fun. And it was, I had a really good time. You know, you have, you grew up in, you grew up with a family and the business around the business. Like, did you always know that you wanted to be an actor and singer? I know you started at a young age, but like way back when you were a child in school, was this always your calling? Yeah, I've always liked it. Yeah, I think so. I've always, I've, I've, I've, but you know, it's not just that. It's just like being creative. If it's, if it's art, if it's singing, dancing, whatever it is, like, you know, that, that to me has always been my outlet. So I do love it. I had so much fun too, because no one knew it was me. What some people I think did, but did people in your life start calling you and saying, you know, with the clues and the voice? Like, did people figure it out? Yeah, but I did. I tried to not really dive into the conversations. The clues were so kind of like everybody, I don't know who else that could have been. So that yeah, the clues were pretty, you know, for most people, I think they were like, I think that's Evan. I keep seeing comments. I was like, okay. You're like, okay, wait a second. Well, one of the clues during Star Trek night, you know, was Michael Jackson's white glove. You know, I knew you grew up around Michael Jackson. Like, was there like a certain piece of advice that he gave you just for life or in this business that you still carry with you today? Um, I'm sure there's been a lot of things, but I think more importantly, just, you know, I think, I think just him being an inspiration was the most thing. And I, you know, I was very lucky to be able to get to know him as a human being. And I think he's amazing. I'm probably his biggest fan. And I'm excited about, you know, them celebrating him right now with the movie, you know, Absolutely. The movie is great. You know, you did mention also in your clue package, you know, that you grew up around like Luther and Stevie and and Michael, you know, from your mom's parties. Did you like, did you like that type of music? Like I'm a big 80s music person, 70s, like what type of music do you love? I mean, I pretty much listened to that music more than anything else. Even now, I think I listened to all those songs like Marvin Gaye and, you know, Stevie Wonder, Luther Van Dros. I think that's like the staple of the songs I listen. And also, I think it's all inspired by that anyway. Yeah, I think what it did for me is like, I'm always inspired by other artists. I love seeing people and even artists of, you know, my age and younger that are talented. I've always been inspired by watching other people do what they do. And I think it's because I grew up around all these amazing human beings, you know, in the household. Completely. That's the music I still listen to today too. If it's not 80s or 90s, I have a hard problem. Yes, I try to like some new music, but it just, you know, unless artists like that are from then that now do a new album other than that, it's hard. There's some really good ones coming out now. I've been finding some really, you know, there's a lot, I think people are more now than ever grabbing from a lot of inspiration that came before. So there's a lot of talented people coming out here, I think. That's great. You know, people love The Masked Singer. It's such a beloved reality show competition for so many people. But, you know, I personally was also a huge fan of Ashley and Evan. I watched all six episodes. Nice. You know, did you like that experience, you know, like inviting the cameras into your house to film you and your family? Yeah, I actually had a really, well, it wasn't as long as, it was a lot easier than I think people thought and we also produced it. So we kind of were able to do it the way we wanted to do it. We had a lot of, we actually had a lot of fun. And we had a lot of friends in there and we kept it really positive, I think. And I don't know, we had a really, we actually had a really good time. Yeah. Would you ever, you know, like your kids are getting older now, it's a different fans of life. Would you ever do a reality TV show again based on your family? I don't think so. It's like, you know, I think it's a phase. Yeah, it was short, six episodes. You had an EP after it, you know, it's an all-time job. We had a great time. It was like a whole like world when we were traveling doing music together, having fun. It was nice working with my wife. Like it was all, yeah, it was great. It's always good when you work with your family. One of your songs that you sang was, you know, mama's song, you know, you dedicated it to your mom. Like what is a piece of advice that your mother gave you just that also you take into life or just for this business? You know, this is a tough business for a lot of people. Yeah, it's interesting. I mean, people ask me that all the time, but I can't even, she gives me advice every day. Like, there's so many, like, I mean, the biggest thing, and I think even, you know, even about her grandchildren and everything has to do with just, you know, be happy and do what you love, you know. I think that's the biggest thing, you know, that, you know, but we, yeah, she gives me inspiration about everything. She tells me all kinds. We talk every day. So, yeah, you know, that's, that's all you can ask for, right? You know, to speak to your mother every single day. Yeah, I'm a caller after this. I know you have new music coming out, like what, and you have an art show coming up in London. What can you tell us about your new music that you're working on? Well, it's, it's, it's, yeah, I've taken a long time kind of putting together this music as well as the artwork. And I kind of wanted to find a different way to release music. And so I've been, I've been, it's been taking me a while. I think it's going to be really special. I finally really love it. And I'm excited to release it. And so I'm excited about all that. But it's, it's so full. It's always going to be so full, so full sounding. And it's also the creative and even the artwork that I'm doing kind of collides with the music. So, yeah. That's amazing. Is it, you know, we talked about your friends and maybe people that knew it was you, but you know, I'm horrible, I guessing, in the show. And even me at the end, when you say mother's supreme and endless love, distinctly, I'm like, well, no, then I got it. Then I got it. Then I mean, you know, along, but then I got it. And the judges got it. Like, is there, did you, do you care that the judges got it? Like, was there some let down that everyone guessed that it was you at the end? Well, I, you know, truly, for some reason, I think they might, some of them may have been thinking in the back of their mind that was me early on, because I know them so well. I didn't want them to know because part of what was fun about it to me was that I was out there, not nobody knowing. And I could just have fun and not like think that they know it's me. But, um, yeah, no, when they found out, though, yeah, I mean, yeah, I don't know. I, for some, maybe they didn't know, but yeah, I was fine with them figuring it out. I guarantee Nick knew from the beginning. I was too close to him. And I'm not, since I was like 15, 16, and he was like standing right next to me. There's no way he was me. I don't think. Was it nice because look, you know, there's so many preconceived notions in the world about fame and all this other stuff. So like, you know, just that must have been nice that nobody knew who it was or who's, you know, it just. I thought it was going to be fun because you're singing other people's songs and nobody knows what you, it's you and you get to just kind of have fun with it and think songs that you may have not sung before like, you know, covers that you have sung before that you'd like to sing. I also just thought it was so brilliant the costume design and everything. I mean, what they do when you go and I had no idea when you go on to that production and you see what it takes for them to build these things. I mean, it's pretty incredible. It's incredible. And you go in there and the next day they have a whole new piece of it and they keep making these new pieces on your outfit is pretty incredible. Yeah, I can't imagine that singing in that costume is easy at all. I couldn't see anything. Nothing. I was being walked around. I was like in my own little, I didn't know where I was at the time. I had a little earpiece in there that somebody would be telling me that you sound good, man. Have a good time. You're like, let me just go. I'm like, where am I? Can somebody find a way to, I got a P. Can I get stuff like that? I love it. As we wrap up just because I'm such a huge fan like Ashley Simpson bow down, bow down. I was just at the Abbey. Do you have a favorite? I was there. I saw you there. You were helping her when she came out into the audience. Well, she had this little, she had this little thing attached to it, like this thing attached to her back of her dress and she's having a good time, but it kept getting caught on something. And I was like, oh my God, I was like, did she falls on this thing? I was like, I kept trying to hold on to this little, he's a fabric. I love it. It was a great show. Do you, do you have a favorite Ashley Simpson song as we wrap up? Man, I like all their songs, but I think I don't even like this video a lot. She had like this trench coat. She's got a little cane. L O V E. Yeah. Yeah, I like that song a lot. She had like this little cute haircut. And I remember I thought she was cute before I met her with that. I look at it and see it on her video.
